Banda Black RioSuper Nova Samba Funk (yellow vinyl pressing) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Far Out (UK), 2011. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A brilliant new vision for the legendary Banda Black Rio – the pioneering samba, soul and funk combo that broke so much ground in the 70s and remain vital to this day – led here by William Magalhaes, in a mode that celebrates decades of the best Brazilian music, while fearlessly moving it forward! William's father Oberdan Magalhaes was a driving force behind the original Banda Black Rio, and we couldn't really imagine a more appropriate new vision for the group than his son's. William wrote or co-wrote each track and he sings, plays keys and synth, guitar, bass, drums and more. The expansive group brings a depth of percussion, horns, strings and vocals – delivering timeless and dexterous jazzy Brazilian funk and dancefloor soul. The guest list includes classic and contemporary greats like Seu Jorge, Elza Soares, Marcio Local and others. Includes "Louis Lane" with Seu Jorge & Mano Brown, "Super Nova Samba Funk (9 No Samba)", "America Do Sul", "Isabela" feat Elza Soares and Cesar Camargo Mariano, "Samba Nova", "Quem Vem La" feat Marcio Local, "Deixa Estar" feat Aleha and "Lindos Olhos" feat Seu Jorge and Don Pixote. 8 tracks on the vinyl version. Beginning Of The EndFishman (full length, 45 version)/Funky Nassau (full length) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... 12-inch
Strut (UK), 1972. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... Just Sold Out!
That's "Fishman", not fisherman – and the tune's a rare b-side from the insanely funky group Beginning Of The End – presented here in a never-issued full length take that runs for nearly 12 minutes in length! Given that Beginning Of The End usually only gave us shorter funk tracks, the longer format is a wonderful change – and totally worth all the vinyl space it takes up – especially when the flipside features the original 45 version of the tune, and a 5 minute full length version of the group's classic "Funky Nassau"! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Mercury/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy (pic cover, reissue)... $24.99
Blue Feather may look a bit hokey on the cover, but they sound really wonderful on the record – a sweet, smooth, funky group who were one of the best on the scene in the early 80s! The vibe here is a lot like the best Brit funk of the period – all these riffing guitars, warm keyboards, and bumping basslines on "Call Me Up" – fitting the catchy lyrics wonderfully, and setting things up for some very cool keyboard sounds too! "Let's Funk Tonight" definitely lives up to the title – a super-groovy tune that runs for almost 10 minutes in length – hook-heavy lyrics upfront, but lots of room for bass solos and all these cool spacey keyboard sounds too – so much so that the tune is more instrumental than vocal! 12-inch, Vinyl record

James BrownSho Is Funky Down Here (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Polydor/Now Again, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 27.99
A legendary bit of fuzzy funk from James Brown – an important collaboration with the mighty Dave Matthews, who brings a more tripped-out feel to the record than some of James' other King sessions of the time! Matthews adds in lots of psych-influenced guitar – used very different than the scratching riffs of the other JB material of the late 60s – in ways that almost make the record a second chapter to Dave's Grodeck Whipperjenny album – a gritty blend of funk, soul, and psych – all with some nice touches by the James Brown Band! All tracks are co-written by Brown and Matthews, and all are instrumental – and titles include "Can Mind", "Don't Mind", "Bob Scoward", and "Just Enough Room for Storage". LP, Vinyl record album

Marion BrownPorto Novo (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Polydor/ORG, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Genius early work from reedman Marion Brown – an album that was originally only issued overseas, where it was recorded – as part of that legacy that's always had Brown getting a lot more attention in Europe than back at home! Yet the record's a monster that stands equally with Marion's seminal sides for Impulse and ESP – and is maybe even bolder than both of them, as Brown blows alto in a loose trio – with Maarten Van Altena on bass and Han Bennink on drums – in a mode that definitely puts the "free" in free jazz – recorded before the start of both FMP and BYG! Yet there's also that sensitive, soulful quality that makes Brown so great – that element in the music that's always had recordings like these as key pointers forwards to the loft jazz years on the NYC scene – a brilliant blend of freedom and inner spirit – on titles that include "Sound Structure", "QBIC", "Porto Novo", and "Similar Limits". Culture Factory/LMLR, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A classic bit of stretched-out spaciness from the early days of Virgin Records – two side-long tracks that are filled with lots of cool keyboards, percussion, and other hip instrumentation! The record's the brainchild of Cyrille Verdeaux – who plays piano, organ, mellotron, and even gong on the set – working with a different group on each side – guitar, vibes, bass, and percussion on side one – and on side two, tenor from Didier Malherbe, guitar from Steve Hillage, and synth from Tim Blake! The sound is a bit too relaxed to be jamming, but definitely has a nice sort of proggish vibe – never sleeping, and always nice and exploratory, even when spacey. LP, Vinyl record album

A really strange little record from the glory days of Cherry Red Records – and a set that's very different than you might expect from the high-end fashion look of the cover! The group have a mix of punk and reggae elements – usually nice and lean, with the bass as upfront in the mix as the guitar, and vocals in an English-accented mode, very deep in the bassier range – which really fits the rhythms well! There's maybe kind of a Z Records feel at times – but the guitars are edgier, and echo a Leeds scene style too – on titles that include "Don't Touch Me", "Bike Boys", "Red Green & Gold", "Die In The West", "Product Perfect", and "Technofascist". Hilton FeltonMan For All Reasons (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Hilton's Concept/Expansion (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 32.99
A holy grail of funky music – and a rare gem from the DC scene of the 70s! Keyboardist Hilton Felton cut this wicked killer for his own tiny label – Hilton's Concept – and it's a very unique blend of jazz and funk modes, done with help from members of The Blackbyrds and Three Pieces! Felton plays Fender Rhodes, vibes, organ, and even some percussion on the record – grooving in this stretched-out, easygoing way that's unlike anyone else we can think of – often with fuller backings that might be at home on a soundtrack, but which have a much more open flow overall. Most tracks are nice and long, with plenty of sweet electric solo space – and titles include the classic "Bee Bop Boogie", a 9 minute groover with a monster break on the intro – plus "The Light Of Mankind", "Man For All Reasons", "Tell Her Love Has Felt The Need", "Love's Losers", and "Blues For a Weary Man". J Dilla was always way more than just a hip hop artist – a visionary creator who was taken from us all too soon, given strong tribute here by the mighty talents of Miguel Atwood Ferguson – a contemporary of Dilla, and a similarly visionary talent! The music here was recorded live – a masterful blend of 60 musicians reworking some key cuts from the catalog of Dilla – in tribute both to his talents, and the warmth of his mother, who was with him when he passed – given great help from a large array of guests – including Shafiq Husayn, Amp Fiddler, Bilal, Dwele, Illa J, Karriem Riggins, Posdnous, and Talib Kweli. The music here is light years from its original hip hop roots – proof of all the many musical channels that J Dilla could help unlock – and tracks include "Morning Order", "Antiquity", "Le Yachting", "Untitled/Fantastic", "Welcome 2 Detroit", "Gobstopper", "Affolements Grantiques", "Don't Nobody Care About Us", "Jealousy", "Angel", "Reminisce", "Stakes Is High", and "Fall In Love". Frank FosterLoud Minority (with bonus 20 page booklet) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Mainstream/We Want Sounds (UK), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... About October 1, 2021
One of the most amazing albums ever from Frank Foster – a totally righteous set that's light years ahead of his earlier work with the Basie Band! The format here is right up there with the best on Strata East at the time – a large-group session that's filled with some of the hippest players of the early 70s – all coming together with a joyous, spiritual sense of power! Foster's in the lead on tenor and soprano sax, but other players include Cecil Bridgewater and Hannibal Marvin Peterson on trumpets, Harold Mabern on keyboards, Elvin Jones on drums, Dick Griffin on trombone, Stanley Clarke on bass, Airto on percussion, and even Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals! Tracks are all quite long and flowing – spiritual expressions of jazz that rival the greatness of anything recorded for Impulse – and titles include "The Loud Minority", "Requiem For Dusty", "JP's Thing", and "EW – Beautiful People". ✨✧ Jimmy GiuffreNew York Concerts – The Jimmy Giuffre 3 & 4 (180 gram pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Anagram, 1965. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
Amazing music from Jimmy Giuffre – and a much-needed document of this under-recorded time in his career! The 2CD set brings together two different live performances – each done two years after his groundbreaking Free Fall album for Columbia, and with a sound that's even more far-reaching than that classic set! The Giuffre heard here is extremely free on his reeds – especially clarinet, which is blown at a level that prefaces countless European free jazz work to come – with an incredible range of sounds, colors, and tones. Giuffre also plays tenor – with more bite and soul than ever before – almost at an ESP sort of level – and the accompaniment on both sessions is very loose and free, too – with Joe Chambers on drums on both concerts – working with Richard Davis on bass on a trio set, and with a quartet that includes Don Friedman on piano and Barre Phillips on bass. The whole thing is mindblowing – a chapter of this amazing musician's career that demands to be heard – and stands as even more of a revelation than other Giuffre releases in recent years. Titles include "Cry Want", "Syncopate", "Drive", "Angles", "Quadrangle", "Crossroads", and "Three Bars In One". LP, Vinyl record album

Trumpeter Terumasa Hino at a level that's quite different than most of his early work in Japan – recording in New York, and using a very spiritual approach – one that's clearly influenced by some of the other players in the session! The album features one long track – a bit improvised, and almost free at times – but also given a strong sense of direction, too – that balance between completely unbridled expression and structure that can make some of the best spiritual jazz sessions so great! Hino's on trumpet, and also plays some flugelhorn – and other players include Steve Grossman on tenor and flute, Pete Yellin on alto and flute, Dave Liebman on alto and tenor, Olu Dara on trumpet, Bob Moses on drums, Dave Holland on bass, and Mike Garson on piano and Fender Rhodes. The mix of modes hearkens back to Hosono's famous solo records of the 70s – offbeat, but in an understated way – and Hosono's vocals feel as if they haven't aged at all, on titles that include "Angel On My Shoulder", "Radio Activity", "Pom Pom", "Body Snatchers", "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens", "Sports Men", and "Absolute Ego Dance" – plus "Honey Moon", which features guest work from Mac DeMarco. Resonance, 1965. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99 19.99
Rare material from pianist Bob James – and tracks that are a lot different than his funky Fender Rhodes albums of the 70s! The set is the first-ever issued of work recorded at Columbia University in 1965 – and the vibe is a bit like James' album for Mercury Records around the same time – a bit straight at point, but also with some surprising avant moments too – touches that make Bob part of that young generation of new experimental pianists, which would also include Steve Kuhn, Don Friedman, and the young Keith Jarrett! The first half of the set very much lives up to that mode – with a trio that features Larry Rockwell on bass and the great Bob Pozar on drums – on titles that include "Lateef Minor 7th", "Once Upon A Time", "Serenata", and "Variations". The second half is from later in the year, and is maybe more boppish overall – with a trio that features Bill Wood on bass and Omar Clay on drums – on titles that include "Indian Summer", "Solar", "Long Forgotten Blues", and "Airegin". CTI/A&M, 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
A truly fantastic record, and one that's become the stuff of legend over the years – a rare CTI album that was only ever issued in Japan – and which may well be one of the coolest sessions recorded during the A&M years of the label! Trombonists JJ Johnson and Kai Winding had recorded two other records for CTI during the period – both great – but this set has them stretching out in this really expansive mode that's completely unique – long tracks put together with complicated arrangements that really blow away anything else they ever did – funky, soulful, but also moving towards higher ideals too – a fantastic testament to the newfound arranging skills of Johnson, who handled most of the record. The group also features some amazing keyboard work from both Herbie Hancock and Bob James – who get plenty of room to roam – plus guitar from George Benson, bass from Ron Carter, and drums from Grady Tate – a superb lineup who really make the whole thing shine. The depth of this music is hard to describe in words, but the whole thing's wonderful – and the set features just four long tracks – "Dontcha Hear Me Callin To Ya", "Musings", "Mojo", and "Recollections". Fresh/Get On Down, 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99
Just-Ice wasn't actually part of the old school – although to some, the 1986 release might seem pretty darn close – but he definitely does a good job here of keeping things nice and clean on his classic debut! Production is from Mantronik, but there's also a harder edge than most of his other work in the studio – maybe thanks in part to edits by the great Chep Nunez, who was responsible for doing some great work on the Ultimate Breaks & Beats series! The sound blasts out of the deck with a very booming 80s sound – and the set also features some human beatboxing from DMX, who often explodes with the quality of a drum machine. Titles include "Back To The Old School", "Gangster of Hip Hop", "Latoya", "Cold Gettin Dumb", "Little Bad Johnny", and "Put That Record Back On." The debut album from Kassav – a group who rocked the Parisian club scene at the end of the 70s with a fantastic blend of Guadeloupe styles and more contemporary rhythms – really opening the door for countless other acts to follow in their wake! The tracks are mostly long, and heavy on basslines – with hypnotic vocals that are often firmly folded in to the rhythm, and recorded with a touch of echo that also resonates strongly with the percussion. The long tracks allow for some great instrumental breakdowns – and titles include "Novel", "Love & Ka Dance", "Kassav", and "Fascination". 2LP version also features the full songs from the oddly different American version – with titles that include "Fascination", "Don't Be A Fool", "Attention", and vocal and instrumental versions of "Africa". MFSB/Three Degrees/Billy Paul/O'JaysGolden Gate Groove – The Sound Of Philadelphia Live 1973 (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1973. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99
The setting is the Golden Gate, but the sound is pure Philly International – a rare early live performance from the label, featuring some of its key vocal heavyweights working here with live accompaniment from MFSB! Although the instrumental group backed Philly artists often in the studio, this 1973 concert marks the only time they worked live with the singers – in a stunning showcase for the young label, performed as part of a Columbia Records convention in San Francisco! Given the setting, and the uniqueness of the whole event, the release of this rare material is a treasure for soul fans of many generations – a rare addition to the amazing run of music the label first started giving us at the time. The set begins with MFSB doing a version of "Freddie's Dead" – then runs into Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes singing "I Miss You", "The Love I Lost", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now" – followed by Three Degrees on "I Didn't Know" and "Dirty Ol Man". MFSB then follow with "TSOP", then Billy Paul sings "East" and "Me & Mrs Jones", and the set ends with The O'Jays on "Love Train", "Sunshine", "Back Stabbers", and "When The World's At Peace". RCA/Nature Sounds, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
The moog wizard Hugo Montenegro takes on the music of Stevie Wonder – in a blend that maybe makes the record one of the coolest that the studio maestro ever recorded! Hugo had already proven that he could groove in the 60s, and he picked up the moog at the end of the decade and started really working magic with the electronics – and here, the songs of Stevie Wonder provide an extra-special setting for his talents – as Hugo mixes in a range of keyboards, including some Arp, with tight studio work from Carol Kaye on bass, Hal Blaine on drums, and Larry Carolton on guitar. Titles include great versions of "Living For The City", "Too High", "Superstition", "Higher Ground", "You've Got It Bad Girl", and "All In Love Is Fair". LP, Vinyl record album

Wes MontgomeryBack On Indiana Avenue – The Carroll DeCamp Recordings (180 gram pressing) (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Resonance, Late 50s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $48.99
Really fantastic early work from guitar genius Wes Montgomery – a series of live recordings from his Indianapolis roots – done at a level that's quite different than his bigger records of the 60s! Even at this early age, Wes is already a chromatic master – able to get sounds out of his guitar that are so different than most of his contemporaries – playing in a small combo mode on most tracks, but with less of the R&B influence than most postwar guitarists. Instead, Montgomery is pure jazz all the way through, but also without that too-clean tone that some folks were going for – just a great focus on color and open, honest tone – in the company of musicians who include Carl Perkins and Buddy Montgomery on piano, Mel Rhyne on Hammond, Monk Montgomery on bass, David Baker on trombone, and David Young on tenor. Those last two players only make a few appearances – as most groups are horn-less, which gives Wes even more solo space – on titles that include "Four", "Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea", "It's You Or No One", "Ecaroh", "Sandu", "Whisper Not", "Four On Six", "Mr Walker", "Round Midnight", "West Coast Blues", "Tune Up", "So What", and "The End Of A Love Affair". Enja/Solid (Japan), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $49.99
Drummer Takeo Moriyama is best known to our ears as one of the key forces in the trio of pianist Yosuke Yamashita in the 70s – and he definitely continues that strong legacy here, but with a vibrant voice that's all his own! The session is maybe more pitched towards the spiritual side of the spectrum than the avant one – and the group features twin reed genius from Toshio Inoue on soprano and tenor, and Shuichi Enomoto on soprano, tenor, and flute! There's only the bass of Hideaki Mochizuki to add to the sound – which leaves a lot of great reed interplay amidst the dynamic energy inspired by the leader's drums. Titles include "Gradation", "Night Story", "Ta Ke", "Non Check", "Tohku", and "Fields". LP, Vinyl record album

Sugar/Decca, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 27.99
A cool change from the usual from Ennio Morricone – a later soundtrack, and one that features some surprisingly jazzy tracks! Part of the set features the more standard Morricone orchestrations you might expect – some really great tracks that have offbeat larger arrangements that are nicely unsettling, but in a completely charming way. But other tracks are even more striking – and feature performances by the trio of pianist Enrico Pierannunzi – working here at his most fluid and vibrant, with a style that's even more evocative than most of his standard albums! A few numbers have a groove we've never heard from Enrico, and some of the orchestral tracks are mighty groovy too – very different than what you might expect from the 1980 date of the film. Titles include "Cinque Quarti", "Double Face", "Citta Viva", "Madre Assente", "Stranamente Un Giorno", and "Per Enrico Riccardo E Roberto". LP, Vinyl record album

You might not recognize the group's name, but you'll definitely know the three leaders – pianist Brad Mehldau, tenorist Mark Turner, and guitarist Peter Bernstein – coming together here in a session that's a real standout in the catalogs of all three musicians! Brad Mehldau somehow seems to have more of an edge, Mark Turner is warmer than usual, and Peter Bernstein makes his guitar ring out with bold colors and tones that really seem to hold the whole thing together! Remaining quintet members include Larry Grenadier on bass and Leon Parker on drums – both players who deserve equal billing with the M, T, and B – and titles include two takes on the great Jackie McLean tune "Little Melonae" – plus a version of Wayne Shorter's "Limbo, Horace Silver's "Peace", and the original tunes "Afterglow", "Phatasm", and "Belief". The first-ever vinyl release of material from two Charlie Parker appearances at the Howard Theater in Washington DC – one set recorded in 1952, the other in 1953 – debuting on vinyl from the CD-only release The Washington Concerts! Bird is wonderful throughout – with that kind of special, inventive edge that always makes his live material as essential as his studio work – solos that make renditions of familiar tunes come across as newly revelatory passages. Side one features the 1953 material – with a quartet that includes Jack Holliday on piano, Franklin Skeete on bass, and Max Roach on drums – on versions of "Cool Blues", "Anthropology", "Ornithology", and "Out Of Nowhere". Side two features a larger group from 1952 – with Bill Shanahan on piano, Charlie Byrd on guitar, Mert Oliver on bass, and Don Lamond on drums – playing "Scrapple From The Apple" – then expanded with the addition of Charlie Wilp on trumpet, Kai Winding and Earl Swope on trombones, and Zoot Sims on tenor – on a medley of "Out Of Nowhere/Now's The Time". Kellee Patterson's amazing first album for the Shadybrook label – a total killer all the way through, and much harder and heavier than any of her later sides for the label! The record's got a nice jazzy vibe that's a good bridge between her earlier work on Black Jazz, and her later, straighter soul material – a dose of funk in all the right places, and a touch of spiritual leanings too – really put together with a wonderful feel that sets the album apart from much other work of the time! Includes a sublime breakbeat version of "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby" – with killer drums, and an excellent monologue at the beginning – plus a great cover of Grover Washington's "Mister Magic", with some interesting vocals. Other titles include "Time To Space", "What You Don't Know", and "I Love Music". Gene Russell handled production and arrangements, too – giving the whole thing a nice tie to her album for Black Jazz. We're huge fans of the early work of Johnny Paycheck – his Little Darlin records are some of our favorite country albums of all time – and this set even predates those classic sides, as it features early demo recordings when Johnny still had his sights set on greater fame! At the time, Paycheck was working in the band of George Jones – you've maybe seen him on some older album covers behind George – and he snuck off and got help from the Adams Brothers, who both produced and acted as his band – while Johnny takes on tunes that include an early version of "Miller's Cave", plus "Family Bible", "A Girl I Used To Know", "I Thought I Heard You Calling My Name", "Me & My Heart & My Shoes", "Long Black Limousine", "Heartbreak Eve", and "Kissing Your Picture Is So Cold". A sweet psychedelic set, but one with very mysterious origins – originally recorded as a sound library session, by a group that was really the better-known Nuova Idea! The album's definitely got a vibe that fits its sound library roots – all instrumental, with a bit less bravado than most psyche albums of this type – almost more of a focus on the rhythms, which stretch out strongly amidst the Hammond and guitar solos on the set. The whole thing's still pretty rockish, but also has a deeper sensitivity to the overall sound too – a quality that's partly due to production efforts of Giampiero Reverberi. CBS/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.99
A fantastic bit of female funk from the 70s – and a set that was recorded in Germany by a very exotic singer! The album is Asha Puthli's first – and includes some unusual interpretations of work by JJ Cale, John Lennon, Bill Withers, and George Harrison – plus a great tune of her own – set to these cool backings that have lots of spacey electric modes blended with smoother funk passages – kind of a precursor to later Munich disco modes, but with a slower, slinkier feel. Asha's voice is very weird – a bit in the "love to love you baby" mode, and with a range of sounds that moves up and down the scale almost as much as Minnie Riperton. The record's got a nice mix of jazzy arrangements, and Asha's unique high-pitched vocals work great on tracks like "Lies", "Right Down Here", "I Dig Love", "Truth", "I Am A Song", "Let Me In Your Life", and "This Is Your Life". Sir Joe Quarterman & Free SoulSir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
GSF/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 27.98
An undisputed funk classic – even back in the days before anyone ever said the phrase "funk classic"! This album must have been deleted the day it came out – because even though it's attained legendary proportions with groovers worldwide, it's always been hard to find – even back in the 70s! But unlike so many other "rare-but-not great" funk albums, this one's a killer – with a hard funky wah wah sound that we'd rank up there with James Brown's best work on Polydor from the early 70s, and which should have made Joe a millionaire, not a lost legend of soul music. The band is sharp as a knife – with hard drums, tight bass, and some simply amazing guitar riffing. But the best part is Joe – as his vocals are hard and emotional, with just the right touches of righteousness to carry off the album's political messages, but not too much as to spoil the party that the band's having in the background! Every single track is a winner, and if we were ever to make a list of the top five funk albums to own, this one would be on it! Never-heard music from the legendary Rasputin's Stash – a funk group who recorded famously on Atlantic and Curtom in the early 70s, then created this gem of an album that appears here for the first time ever! The quality of the work is fantastic, and even seems better than their Curtom album – as they're still as gritty and funk as before, but have this more complex sense of interplay – both in their instrumentation, and in their vocals, which are filled with all these cool harmonic twists and turns – as if The Notations had teamed up with Curtis Mayfield, to create one of the greatest Chicago funk albums of all time! The group produced the whole thing themselves – and although this one never made it to the history book, it's going right to the top of our list of 70s funk classics. Drummer Steve Reid made some fantastic records back in the 70s – indie label spiritual jazz sessions that went on to become the stuff of legend over the decades – so much so, Reid was able to return to the forefront with this amazing new record in the 21st Century! The set is something of a partnership with Kieran Hebden, who was then of Fourtet, but maybe reached equal fame through his work with Reid – mixing electronics with Steve's drums and percussion – in a very cool ensemble that also features Nathaniel Catchpole and Neil Kleiner on tenor saxes, Chuck Henderson on soprano, Tony Bevan on bass sax, Boris Netsvetaev on keyboards, and John Edwards on bass. The sound is amazing – really a precursor to both the new modes that would emerge on the London scene in the following decade, and the rebirth of spiritual jazz around the same time – on titles that include "Lugano", "Drum Story", "Bridget", "For Coltrane", "Blind Tom", "Which One", "Lions Of Juda", "It Cannot Be True", and "Unity". A sweet little set from Japanese keyboardist Masahiko Sato – one that has him playing both acoustic and electric piano, amidst a set of larger backings from Jiro Inagaki and his Big Soul Media group! The sound here is really unique – a bit like some of the fuller American jazz sides at the end of the 70s, but cast out with colors, tones, and changes that are a fair bit different too. There's certainly funky and groovy elements to the album, but also a sound that's a bit more sophisticated too – not nearly as modern or out as some of Sato's other records, but with enough echoes of them to keep things interesting. Sunbeam (UK), 1965. New Copy Gatefold ... $36.99
Rare early work from one of the most important modern jazz musicians on the British scene of the 60s – the groundbreaking pianist Mike Taylor, an artist who would only give the world a handful of records before departing the planet in the final year of the decade! The title here indicates the nature of the setting – as Taylor and his group are in preparation for recording their landmark Pendulum album – recording in a more private setting, with the quartet of Taylor on piano, Dave Tomlin on soprano sax, Tony Reeves on bass, and Jon Hiseman on drums. The bassist is different than on the Penduluum date, and the feel is slightly different too – a mix of the feer ideas that Taylor was about to unleash, with maybe one foot still in straigher modes – yet really given encouragement to stretch out by Tomlin's sublime soprano sax performance! Two long, beautiful improvisations from a trio led by percussionist Yoshisaburo "Sabu" Toyozumi – and balanced wonderfully with reeds from Mototeru Takagi and bass from Takashi Tokuhiro! The music is very careful and quiet at the start, as each player finds these small, almost private spaces in sound – from which they then grow into the full interaction of the trio, and really take things into fantastic directions! The album really offers up a lot of space for the improvisation to flower and take root – as each track takes up a side of the record. Titles include "Water Weed" and "Meteor Crowd". Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $49.99
Percussionist Yoshisaburo Toyozumi – aka Sabu – heads up a brilliant set of creative jazz based on compositions by the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – in a record that's clearly titled with a nod to the musical achievements of the AACM! The album's three long tracks are all AEC compositions – and they're performed by the group with a style that's got the same sort of organic improvisation we love in the Art Ensemble – a mode that's free, yet never too much so – and always skewed with just the right sort of spiritual currents. Toyozumi plays a lot of different percussion – and the group also features Syoji Ukaji on baritone sax, Ryoh Hara on piano, and a bit of alto sax from Yoshiaki Fujikawa. Titles include 'Malachi's Tune", "Roscoe's Tune Odwalla", and "People In Sorrow". LP, Vinyl record album

The set does feature the tracks "Will To Survive" and "Deserts Of The Real" – with guest work from Vic Mensa, presse dup on a 7" single – but it also comes in this very cool manga, done by the team at Saturday AM – a 20 page comic book that's almost worth the price of the package alone! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Arthur VerocaiMochilla Presents Timeless – Arthur Verocai (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Mochilla, 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 31.99
An amazing return to form for the legendary Arthur Verocai – the Brazilian artist whose 1972 album was initially buried under the shifting sands of time – only to re-emerge to a huge new audience in the 21st Century via reissue – and sampling by a host of artists who include Ludacris, MF Doom, and others! This set features Verocai recreating the album in a live setting – adding in some additional music, and working with key Brazilian talents Airto on percussion and Jose Roberto Bertrami on keyboards, as well as the great Justo Almario on reeds – plus some younger talents all brought together as part of this fantastic Timeless series by Mochilla. The performance is wonderful – a fantastic testament to the true timelessness of this music – with titles that include "Karina", "Sylvia", "Dedicada A Ela", "Sucuri", "Flying To LA", "Na Boca Do Sol", "Velho Parente", "O Mapa", "Balada 45", "Isabel", "Bis", "O Temo E O Vento", and "Filhos". Steve Maxwell Von Braund (Cybotron)Return To Monster Planet – Unreleased Cybotron Recordings (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Roundtable (Australia), Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99
Never-issued material from Australian experimentalist Steve Maxwell Von Braund – best known for his work in the space rock band Cybotron, and working here in relatively similar territory on tracks from a host of lost tapes from the late 70s! Steve plays Arp, Mini Korg, and other keyboards – plus a bit of alto sax too – all with a cool sound that's nicely processed, and maybe a more down to earth take on some of the modes from the German scene at the start of the 70s! Most of these tracks are tuneful and rhythmic, and occasionally feature contributions from additional musicians – but still in a way that's nice and lean, and which maybe is almost more like some of the space funk and club recordings that were coming out of Paris and Rome. Titles include "Abbey Moor", "The Floor Before", "Detective", "Goldhawk", and "Unorganization". LP, Vinyl record album

Albert WashingtonSad & Lonely (180 gram pressing) (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Eastbound/Tidal Waves, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99 26.99
An obscure bit of heavy soul – and the only vocal album on the jazz-based Eastbound imprint of Detroit's legendary Westbound Records! Albert's a blues artist, and sings in a soulful electric style that's similar to some of the Stax work of Albert King – but which has a bit more of a funk twist to it. Albert's vocals are definitely in the bluesy mode, but the backing is more in a Memphis soul style, with hints of Stax production styles in the mix, and lots of swirling organ underneath the vocals, in that Hi Records mode from the early 70s. Titles include "You're Messing Up My Mind", "Mischievous", "Feel The Need", "I Can't Stand It No More", "No Matter What The Cost Might Be", and "My Mother's Prayer". A pretty solid soul album all the way through – with a strong deep soul feel that's different than the usual Westbound/Eastbound bag! LP, Vinyl record album

Barney WilenLa Note Bleue (180 gram pressing with bonus CD & book) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Elemental, 1987. New Copy LP, CD, book and comic book (reissue)... $74.99
A really special album from French tenorist Barney Wilen – a set of tunes originally recorded to accompany a graphic novel about his troubled life – done at a time when Wilen had emerged from years of obscurity, and was opening up a whole new chapter in his music! The presentation here is a bit different than some of his other records of the time – as Wilen blows tenor on a set of tracks that follow the musical journey of his life – early standards, French new wave soundtrack themes, and even some of the global experiments he did while in Africa – before turning to some of the strong work that he did on his return. The group is wonderful – the great Alain Jean Marie on piano, Philippe Petit on guitar, Ricardo Sel Fra on bass, and Sangoma Everett on drums – and titles include "Besame Mucho", "Goodbye", "Triste Again", "Whisper Not", "Un Baiser Rouge", and "Les Jours Heureux". This great package features plenty not with the original record – new mastering of the album, 40 page booklet of liner notes and photos, a bonus CD with a live 1989 performance with Jacky Terrasson on piano, and the 88 page graphic novel Barney Et La Note Bleue, by Jacques De Loustal and Philippe Paringaux – all wrapped up in a very cool box! LP, Vinyl record album

A double-length collection of remixes from the first two albums by Amy Winehouse – a set of tracks that take all the funk of the originals, and add in some elements of hip hop and club as well! Yosuke YamashitaClay (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $49.99
Mindblowing trio work from Japanese pianist Yosuke Yamashita – in a group that's equally noteworthy for its incredible reed performances from the mighty Akira Sakata! The pairing of Sakata and Yamashita was one of the greatest things in Japanese jazz in the 70s, and certainly one of that scene's strongest avant impulses – and the trio's completed by the thoughtfully spacious drum work of Takeo Moriyama, who really knows how to read the room, then run when the time is right. Sakata manages to get some of the most searing sounds from the clarinet we've ever heard, and a hell of a lot of force from the alto too – and the set features a long reading of the trio's classic "Mina's Second Theme" – plus the tune "Clay", dedicated to Muhammad Ali. Kiyoshi YamayaRyukyu (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Columbia/Denon (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $49.99
A really unusual set from the Japanese scene of the 70s – and a record that represents some of the higher pinnacles of their recording technology at the time! The songs here are billed as "Japanese traditional melodies by PCM Recording Systems" – and they are hardly traditional at all – as after an initial orchestral part, they they mix funky jazz with larger strings on side one – almost a blend of Kudu Records and Philly International! Side two has a bit more traditional Japanese instrumentation at the start, but again with a more modern setting – then moves again into some nice funky fusion elements, then blends the two by the end of the record! Titles include "Ryukyu No Sora", "Ryukyu Miyabi", "Ryukyu No Matsuri", and "Ryukyu No Umi". LP, Vinyl record album

The set brings together some of the best of that enterprise – and features live performances from 1969 through 1984 – all mastered by Bernie Grundman, with sound that really made most of the Zappa bootlegs on the market obsolete! Titles include "The Florida Airport Tape", "Sharleena", "Nanook Rubs It", "The Evil Prince", "You Call That Music", "King Kong", "Dickie's Such An Asshole", "Cosmic Debris", "Montana", "The Torture Never Stops", and "Plastic People". VariousPsyche France Vol 7 – 1970s (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Warner/Parlophone (France), Early 70s. New Copy ... $23.99
A really cool entry in this ultra-hip series – a volume that moves a bit more into the 70s than previous ones, but still hangs onto all the wonderfully wild touches that makes the music so great! As you'd guess by the "psyche" in the title, there's certainly some psychedelic influences at play here – but the music is also a bit more built up from all those very cool elements that always made the French scene so different than the rest – that mode of the Serge Gainsbourg generation letting their hair down a bit more, picking up their guitars, but also opening the door to influences from jazz and other global music. Most of these cuts aren't really out there on the reissue market in any other format – and titles include "Vole Vole Vole" by Presence, "Donne" by Richard Contell, "D'Un Jour A L'Autre" by Richard Lable, "Neptune" by Michel Ripoche, "Je Suis Julliet" by Edwige, "L'Ile De Paques" by Guy Skornik, "Les Scandales" by Gilbert Deflez, and "Tu As Tape Du Pied" by Jean Yves Lievaux.
