Fred DavisCleveland Blues (smoke vinyl pressing) (2023 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Colemine/Remined, 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $21.99 26.99
Raw funky blues from the Cleveland scene – unreleased recordings from the obscure singer Fred Davis, who hardly ever set his music to wax back in the day! The album's got a gritty blend of blues inflections and soulful expressions – similar to some of the hippest west side work from Chicago around the same time, but maybe even grittier and more stripped down – as the whole thing wasn't done by a bigger, professional label! Titles include "Express Train", "Midnight Is Falling", "Euclid Avenue", "Five Long Years", "Piano Boogie", "Time When You Say You Love Me", "Express Train", and "Wine Hop". LP, Vinyl record album

Kilmarnock/Now Again, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 27.99
One of the coolest moments ever from the great Galt MacDermot – an album that he recorded for his own small label, in the time after he scored big bucks with the soundtrack to Hair – and was able to work on so many other different creative projects! The album's fantastic – tight, funky, with lots of choppy bits, but also some spare keyboard moments too – sampled famously by a few hip hoppers over the years, but more than great enough on its own. Titles include the classic "Space" – plus "Tango", "Woman Is Sweeter", "Moving Clothes", "Perfume Bottles", "Merry Go Round", "Princess Gika", and "Radio Rock" – plus some cool "Fragments" tracks. Uniteledis/LMLR (France), 1975. New Copy 2LP ... $39.99
One of the last truly outside albums recorded by Archie Shepp in the 70s – a French performance that's very similar to the open-ended, freely-blown recordings he did for the BYG/Actuel label a few years before! The record captures Shepp in territory that's different than some of the more structured recordings and sets of standard material he'd soon be giving the world – and he blows tenor with unbridled energy on long live tracks – working with a very cool group that includes the great Charles Greenlee on trombone, plus Dave Burrell on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums! The band plays with a perfect style that matches freer soloing with soulful modal rhythms – and as a French-only release, it's one of the more obscure Archie Shepp sessions from the period. Titles include "Hipnosis", "U-Jaama", "African Drum Suite", and the amazing "Blues For Don L Duck". LP, Vinyl record album

Reinhard VanbergenGeometric Shapes – Special Radio/TV Record No 19 ... LP
Selection/Sdban (Belgium), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 34.99
An album that really lives up to its name – as the music here definitely has a sense of shape in space – really careful construction of tracks with keyboards and electronics, in ways make for a very unique project overall! The album's got a headier vibe than you'd expect from work on a sound library label – maybe much more at home on Brian Eno's Obscure label, and even a match for some of the best of his early Ambient projects too – as Reinhard Vandbergen has a wonderful sense of sound, tone, and space – really letting these electronic elements flow out in a gentle way as they find shapes of their own. Titles include "Pentagon", "Hexagon", "Rhombus", "Star", "Trapezium", "Triangle", "Circle", and "Parallelogram". LP, Vinyl record album

Mason WilliamsMason Williams Phonograph Record/Ear Show/Music By/Handmade/Sharepickers ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
Five really inventive albums from the great Mason Williams – presented here in a single package! First up is the Mason Williams Phonograph Record – amazing stuff, one of those records you see for years, and always pass by – but which yields some real surprises once you dig in! Mason Williams is one of the cooler cats in the Warner Brothers stable of the late 60s – but he's also one of the more subtle, too – a folkie at heart, but an artist with a really great sense of wit, warmth, and variety – very much in the best genre-stepping style of the Burbank scene of the time. The set features, of course, Mason's huge hit "Classical Gas" – an instrumental you'll recognize instantly – but next to that is the sublime "Baroque A Nova", a very cool scatting harmony track that's like some lost late 60s Hugo Montenegro gem – and the camp psych gem "The Prince's Panties" – done with all the wit of late 60s Warner – as is the whole album! Other tracks include "Wanderlove", "Overture", "All The Time", and "She's Gone Away". Next is the Mason Williams Ear Show – a wonderfully weird record from the mighty Mason Williams – a set that's filled with lots of cool little surprises at each new twist and turn – yet which also comes across with a really solid, tuneful feel overall! The album's got a bit of folk, a bit of moog, and a bit of kitsch – but has a way of serving it all up with the kind of warmth and wit we love so much in that unique late 60s Warner Brothers moment – the same sort of vibe you might get from Van Dyke Parks or Harpers Bizarre at their best. Some tunes have Mason Williams singing these beautifully poetic lyrics straight, while others evoke the playful feel of his appearances on the Smothers Brothers Show – but things are really balanced throughout, and give the record that sense of discovery we hardly ever find in albums these days. Titles include a new version of "Baroque A Nova" from Mason's first album, the cool electronic "Generatah Oscillatah" instrumental, the groovy "Last Great Waltz", a "One Minute Commercial", and a wild remake of "Cinderella Rockefella" – plus "Saturday Night At The World", "$13 Stella", and "Whistle Hear". Music By Mason Williams is sublime genius from Mason – one of the most subtle talents in the Warner hip stable at the time – more so than even Jack Nitzsche or Van Dyke Parks! The album is a non-ironic blend of soundtrack styles, country music, and even some pseudo classical numbers – all handled with that youthful sense of nostalgic loss that seems to oddly characterize so much of the best work of the late 60s Warner scene. Titles include "Cowboy Buckaroo", "J Edgar Swoop", "Sunflower", "A Major Thang", "The Brothers Theme", and "Bucko's Memoirs". Handmade is a record that's lovingly handmade by Warner studio genius Mason Williams – an artist who, like so many of Warner's great talents of the late 60s, started out in folk, but soon exploded to great new heights in the recording freedom offered by the label – as you'll hear in this really incredible set! Williams mixes acoustic instrumentation with larger arrangements, offbeat rhythms, and occasional vocals – post-folk, post-sunshine pop, and with these hip undercurrents that were barely understood in the right way at the time – even though Mason himself was enough of a popular figure for some folks. The songwriting is smart, and the instrumentation and arrangements even more so – as you'll hear on a great reworking of his famous "Classical Gas", plus "Jose's Piece", "Find A Reason To Believe", "Saturday Night At The World", "Tomato Vendetta", and "It's Over". Sharepickers is the last album in an amazing run of records that Mason Williams did for Warner Brothers – impossible to define in easy terms, as the whole thing is a mix of acoustic instrumentation, larger arrangements, occasional vocals, and this wonderful interplay between underground artists and top-shelf studio talents on the LA scene of the time! Williams' instrumental chops alone would have made the record great – but he really knocks it out of the park with his overall conception, which fits in that unique late 60s/early 70s Warner space perfectly, next to albums by Van Dyke Parks, Neon Philharmonic, John Hartford, and some of the other genre-breaking talents on the label. Titles include "Train Ride In G", "Poor Little Robin", "Godsend", "Linda Crest Lament", "A Little Bit Of Time", "Largo De Lux", and "Here I Am Again". CD

Johnny AceMemorial Album ... LP
Duke, Early 50s. Very Good ... $7.99
The only full album from Johnny Ace – a key figure in the Memphis scene of the 50s, and one of the first great casualties of rock and roll! Johnny was one of the first singers to record for the legendary Duke label, and worked in a mode that helped transform the smoother style of the west coast postwar R&B singers into a rougher, rawer mode that would pave the way for Memphis soul in years to come. And although Johnny died a tragic early death (and partially because of it), the impact of his work was tremendous, even in the few short years for which he recorded for Duke – leading to countless posthumous collections, mostly illegitimate, which often presented Johnny's work in less-than-superior conditions. This set is still the best – and features 12 tracks that Ace recorded for the Duke label. Titles include "How Can You Be So Mean", "My Song", "The Clock", "Cross My Heart", "Anymore", "Don't You Know", "Saving My Love For You", "So Lonely", and "Pledging My Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label stereo Duke pressing. Cover has some surface wear and aging, splitting in the seams and spine, yellowed tape remnants at the edges, and is stained at the bottom right edge.)

Cannonball AdderleyJump For Joy ... LP
Mercury, 1958. Very Good+ ... $6.99 9.99
An interesting early side by Cannonball that captures him before he'd really found his voice – and when the folks at Mercury still didn't really know what to do with him. The record's a tightly arranged set of tracks from Duke Ellington's musical "Jump For Joy" – with arrangements by Bill Russo, and small group playing that includes Emmett Berry, Bill Evans, Barry Gabraith, Jimmy Cobb, and a small string section. The sound's actually quite haunting – and Cannon's alto solos remind us more of some of the best "with strings" soloing heard on Verve in the early 50s than they do his later soul jazz classics on Riverside or Capitol. That's ok with us, though – because the session's still got a lot to offer in that respect, and Cannonball handles the solos wonderfully! Titles include "Bli Blip", "Just Squeeze Me", "Nothin", and "The Tune Of The Hickory Stick". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo blue label pressing with deep groove. Vinyl and cover have cutout holes. Includes Mercury inner sleeve.)

Cannonball AdderleyKnow What I Mean? ... LP
Riverside, 1961. Near Mint- ... $99.99
Beautiful early work from Cannonball Adderley – and a record that's quite different than most of his better known sets from the time! The album's more spare and stripped-down than usual – with Cannon's alto in a quartet alongside Bill Evans on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. The style is almost more that of Evans than it is Cannonball – lightly lyrical, with a good sense of space – in a way that has Adderley playing out front very strongly, cutting some beautiful lines with his solos, in a really unfettered way! Titles include versions of two of Evans' tracks – "Waltz For Debby" and "Know What I Mean?" – plus nice moody takes on other material, like John Lewis' "Venice", Clifford Jordan's "Toy", and Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono blue label Bill Grauer Productions Inc pressing. Cover has light surface wear, edge wear, split spine, and some splitting in the bottom seam.)

Paulo Alencar/Joao MirellesJazza Nova/Cool Samba (with bonus track) ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1962. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
Rare bossa jazz from the start of the 60s – two great albums on a single CD! First up is Jazza Nova by Paulo Alencar – an amazing lost bossa jazz session recorded in Brazil, but issued here in the US by Atlantic! Paulo Alencar's group is supposedly filled with "all stars" – and even though they're not actually named, the record's got this fantastic jazzy vibe throughout – very much like some of the new experiments in bossa and samba jazz from some of the bigger names of the time – including the larger combo recordings by the young, pre-Brasil 66 Sergio Mendes! Fast rhythms and jazzy solo work throughout – on titles that include "West Samba", "It's Really Bossa", "Bossa No 2", "Where Was I", "Hello, America", and "Zirigidoom". Next is the album Cool Samba – a very nice album of bossa instrumentals, released in the US under the obscure name of "Joao & His Bossa Kings". Joao is listed on the label as Joao Meirelles – also known as JT Meirelles on his more famous Brazilian recordings – and we wonder if Battle gave him the name of "Joao" to make folks think he was Joao Gilberto, who was selling a lot of records at the time! Whatever the case, though, this is a great album of tight little bossa jazz tracks – served up with small combo instrumentation that includes alto, flute, piano, trumpet, and percussion. Titles include "Nacao Nago", "Solucao", "So Danco Samba", "Samba Toff", "Samba Sem Nome", and "Essa Nega Sem Sandalia". CD features the bonus track "Moeda Quebrada" by Paulo Alencar. CD

Prestige, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A strange title, but the record's a pretty nice collection of Mose Allison's early work for Prestige – a collection that focuses only on his instrumental work as a pianist, and doesn't include any of his better-known vocals! Mose is a pretty great talent on the keys, and these tracks have him stretching out in a way that doesn't always occur on his vocal-oriented sessions – always in trio formation with mostly Addison Farmer on bass, and a variety of drummers that include Ronnie Free, Frank Isola, and Nick Stabulas. Titles include "It's Crazy", "You Belong To Me", "Somebody Else Is Taking My Place", "My Kinda Love", "Strange", "Kissin Bug", and "If I Didn't Care". LP, Vinyl record album

ECM (Germany), 2008. Used ... $11.99
A really lovely record from pianist Misha Alperin – a set that might initially seem to be one of the ECM New Series albums, but which has more of the sensitive feel of older work on the label! Misha plays piano with this gently lyrical feel, mixed with these earthy lines on French horn and flugelhorn from Arkady Shikloper – who blows spaciously to really feel out the edges of the recording – almost opening up new space in sound to make way for Alperin's carefully understated notes. Anja Lechner also plays cello, to underscore some of the subtle feelings in the music – and titles include "Vayan", "Her First Dance", "A New Day", "Frozen Tears", and "April In February". CD

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassWarm ... LP
A&M, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A fantastic record from the late 60s years of Herb Alpert – a time when the trumpeter was really opening up his sound, and starting to hit some of the same cool styles of his other great acts on the A&M label! Gone are the trademark Cali-Mex arrangements of the early Tijuana Brass records – and in their place are these soaring, soulful styles that draw heavily from the late 60s changes in Brazilian music, American soundtracks, and jazz! Shorty Rogers helped a bit with the charts, and you can definitely hear his cool touches in the mix – and the trumpet solos are nicely changed up from previous records too. Herb does a great job with Nilsson's excellent cut "Without Her", and the band grooves nicely on Brazil cuts "The Sea Is My Soil" and "Zazueira", plus "Pretty World", "To Wait For Love", "Sandbox", "Marjorine", and "The Continental". Deram/Esoteric (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $14.99 22.99
Miller Anderson's a singer you might know from work in the Keef Harley Band – but here, he's a very different voice entirely – using his really unique sense of phrasing in a way that's nicely personal and surprisingly soulful at points – all with a quality that makes the record another one of those lost gems on Deram/Decca from the start of the 70s! It's always such a great surprise when we find a record like this – a moment when someone got a chance to really give things their all, and definitely did so – and even if the label never promoted the set, they certainly did the work to allow it to exist – setting Anderson up with help in the studio from Harry Beckett on flugelhorn, Mick Weaver and Peter Dines on organ, and Lyn Dobson on flute. Anderson handles most of the guitar and wrote all the tunes – and titles include "Grey Broken Morning", "Bright City", "Alice Mercy", "Shadows Cross My Wall", and "Nothing In This World". Features bonus tracks – the single b-side "Another Time Another Place" – and BBC Sounds Of The 70s recordings of "High Tide High Water", "Shadows Cross My Wall", "On A Ship To Nowhere", "Alice Mercy", and "To Whom It May Concern". ✨✧ Apple & The Three OrangesFree & Easy – The Complete Works 1970 to 1975 ... CD
Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A funky treasure trove from Apple & The Three Oranges – a group we hardly know at all, but who really blow us away with the cuts on this collection! The groove is plenty hard right from the get-go – the best of the funky 45 underground of the early 70s – which means that there's more 60s rawness on the record than you'd get from bigger-label funk at the time – as Ed "Apple" Nelson still works here with a mostly underground vibe! Ed plays drums – which are mighty hard on most numbers – and his vocals have this offbeat, off-kilter, over the top quality that almost reminds us a bit of the Hank Ballard/James Brown recordings for late 60s King – particularly in the way that Nelson's completely unbridled with his energy. The whole thing's great – one of the best funky collections we've heard in years – and presented with a rich amount of notes and historical information too. Titles include "Free & Easy (parts 1 & 2)", "Moon Light", "Curse Upon The World", "What Goes Around Comes Around", "Down Home Publicity", "True Love Will Never Die", "Gotta Stand For Something (parts 1 & 2)", and "I'll Give You A Ring". The record features the group at their best – playing very tightly, but also with a sense of whimsy and imagination. Side two features the extended track "A Brain For The Seine", a real classic by the band – and side one features versions of "Dexterity" and "Old Time Religion", plus the Roscoe Mitchell composition "Rock Out". RCA, 1974. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Really hard-jamming work from keyboardist Brian Auger – the first of a 2-part live set from the US, and easily some of his greatest work on record! The tracks are all very long and stretched out here – an extrapolation of the territory Auger was already exploring on studio sides, taken into even more cosmic realms through the lively nature of the set. As with other records from the time, Alex Lighterwood sings on some cuts – but the real highlight is the keyboard work of Auger – served up on both organ and electric piano, and hitting a great blend of funk, fusion, and keyboard soul! Titles include a really great funky remake of "Bumpin On Sunset", the original break track "Don't Look Away", and the tunes "Truth", and "Beginning Again". LP, Vinyl record album

MCA/Foundation, 1973. Used ... $9.99
The first chapter in the career of the Average White Band, Show Your Hand, was originally issued in the US as Put It Where You Want It. Average White Band are most clearly associated with Atlantic Records during the 70s – and that label's genius move to record white soul acts for the crossover market – but this first album was recorded for MCA, and very much in the same vein as their later work. The record's not as over the top funky as some of their best work – and perhaps shows kind of a rock style that was always lurking in the group's sound – but the roots of the later greatness are still there, and the album's got more than a few nice cuts. The best track is "Reach Out", but there's some other nice groovers like "TLC" and "Twilight Zone". CD

Albert AylerSpiritual Unity (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
ESP, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A landmark recording – Albert Ayler's first album for the ESP label, and a record that hit the jazz world like a bullet! Spiritual Unity sets the stage for a format that would become huge in the European avant scene of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even today – the sax-driven power-trio, tenor against bass and drums, working freely with less rhythmic constraints than before, searching for new sounds and new modes of expression, working through changes in a style first proposed by Sonny Rollins, but taken to new intensity by the New York underground of the 60s. That sound is summed up here perfectly by Ayler, Gary Peacock, and Sunny Murray – working together with an edgey brilliance, on classic tracks that include "Ghosts: First Variation", "Ghosts: Second Variation", "The Wizard", and "Spirits". LaVern's talent was great enough that she could slip between a number of styles and pull it all off beautfully – so the set may not have so coherent of of a flow, but as a batch of great songs by a wonderful vocal diva it's hard to beat. All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". Robbie Robertson is solely credited for the compositions, but make no mistake, this record is by The Band – not just notes committed to a page and played – it's a fluid, intuitive and timeless album that we love nearly as much as anything they'd ever done – possibly as much as Big Pink or self-titled, even more on some days. We love this record! Gato returns to his native Argentina for the session – and works with a collective of musicians in Buenos Aires to create a sound that's a startling blend of Latin rhythms and post-Coltrane freeness. Barbieri's tone is amazing, and has a rich Pharoah Sanders-ish spirituality to it – soaring out over acoustic percussion and Latin rhythms with an earthy, organic sound that's completely wonderful! Bardianne plays tenor in a quintet that also has lots of great Hammond organ from Arnaud Roulin – and both artists add in a bit of electronics too – but the most striking aspect of the record might be the rhythms, which are served up in blend of bass from Sylvain Daniel, drums from Philippe Gleizes, and percussion from Roger Raspail – all players with a real global sensibility, who push the music past standard jazz, with a very free-flowing vibe. Numero, Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $35.99 41.99
A tremendous package of work from this overlooked soul and gospel legend – four classic albums, plus other rare material too – all packaged with detailed notes in the wonderful Numero Group style! First up is Like A Ship Without A Sail – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too – and the music is filled with raw drums, heavy bass, and lots of great organ lines! Next is Do Not Pass Me By Vol 1 – an album that's got a nice balance between intimate soul numbers and larger tracks that have the whole Mount Zion Baptist Church along for support! The set's definitely got the strongly soulful vibe of Barrett's Like A Ship album – a strong ear for the best secular elements of the time, which are used liberally in the instrumental backing – to really send home the message in the music! Most tunes really soft-pedal the religion, and instead go for an overall feel that really crosses over to regular soul music. Next is the great second volume of Do Not Pass Me By – like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. I Found The Answer is one of the biggest-circulating albums from this fantastic figure in Chicago gospel – a unique set done for the Gospel Truth subsidiary of Stax Records, but a set served up in the same blend of soul-based inspirations as some of TL Barrett's indie label releases back home in the Windy City! Plus, the package features a full album of Singles & Sermons – rare non-LP material by this seminal figure in both soul and spiritual music. CD

Numero, Early 70s. New Copy 5LP ... $54.99 85.99
Nathan BartellNathan Bartell ... CD
Athens Of The North (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
Fantastic funky soul from a very mysterious figure – Georgia's Nathan Bartell, a singer with a deep soul style, and an under-exposed legacy that mostly involves a few indie label singles, and countless work in the smaller clubs of his state! The blend of music here is a bit different than most collections of this nature – as Nathan's work spans both the hard-hitting funky 45 world of the 70s, and the emerging groove styles of the 80s – which means that the record begins with the kind of funky material you'd guess from other southern singles of the time, then moves into midtempo modern soul that's more in the territory of Leon Ware! The mix of modes is a great testament to the under-recognized strengths of Bartell – an artist who kept on growing, even if the rest of the world wasn't paying attention at the time. Titles include "I Feel It Coming", "Top Going Down Bottom Going Up", "Moving On", "Some One Like You", "Ooh Baby I Love You", "Mystery Lady", "I Want Your Love", "See Me Cry", "If I Could Win Your Love", and "Jody & John". Gary BartzJu Ju Man/Love Song ... CD
Catalyst/Fresh Sound (Spain), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
Two overlooked albums from Gary Bartz – back to back on a single CD! First up is Ju Ju Man – a rare treat from saxophonist Gary Bartz – material recorded for a small west coast label after his initial classics on Prestige Records – but in a vibe that's different than the fuller productions of his albums on Capitol Records in the late 70s! The sound here is nicely intimate – almost like a record on the Black Jazz label – as Bartz blows alto and soprano sax in the company of Charles Mims on piano, Curtis Robertson on bass, and Howard King on drums – players with a gently soulful groove who stretch out nicely with Gary on the album's long tracks. Syreeta makes a guest appearance on vocals on a cool version of "My Funny Valentine", and other titles include "Ju Ju Man", "Pisces Daddy Blue", "Straight Street", and "Chelsea Bridge". Love Song is a great little album of sweet soulful jazz tracks from saxophonist Gary Bartz – done with a singing, swinging style that's a great bridge between his work on Prestige and Capitol, and which picks up on the warmer moments of his work with Larry Mizell, but without any of the larger arrangements! The group is a quintet with George Cables on electric piano, and two cuts have additional vocals by Rita Greene – who sings along with Gary's sax in a very soulful way, using those nice changes that were showing up towards the end of his years at Prestige – that unique approach to rhythm that always made his 70s work so wonderful! Greene sings on "Love Song" and "Interlude/Just Suppose" – and other titles include "You", "Lonely Girl", "Don't Stop Now", and "Afterthoughts". CD

Roulette, 1959. Near Mint- ... $7.99
One of Joe Williams' standout classics from the 50s – just the sort of record that put him on top of his game at the time! The album's one of Joe's classic outings with Count Basie – one recorded for Roulette with a slightly looser, slightly rawer feel than their work together on Verve. Joe's rendition of "Everyday I Have The Blues" is a near-definitive one – tight, syncopated, and grooving in a style that stretches back to its roots, but which also steps out with a fresh sort of groove that points the way towards changes in soulful vocal styles during the 60s. Other titles work equally well in the mode – bluesy, but never hokey, all freshened up by the Basie approach of the time – and titles include "Baby Won't You Please Come Home", "Going To Chicago", "Joe Sings The Blues", and "What Did You Win". There's some amazing energy running through the record – really fantastic early guitar from Chris Spedding, who's really in territory that's all his own here – a voice that's all his own on the instrument, which is often layered with piano and organ from Spedding too! Pete Brown engineers, and although he is no longer in the group, many of the tunes were originally penned by him – and vocals from other band members have an equally mad sort of vibe – and if that's not enough, the record also features some wonderful work on sax and flute from Nisar Ahmad Khan, who really unlocks some jazzy currents in the music. A lost classic of the spiritual soulful Detroit/Tribe jazz scene! Initially issued on the Gem Eye label in 1974, in a pressing of only 1000, the record's done nothing but increase in legend since – and for good reason too! The groove picks up in the same domain as the better Art Ensemble Of Chicago records of the late 60s and early 70s – with the rubbery funk electric bass lines and celestial groove of the funkier moments, but deeper sounds of more spiritual points too. Trumpeter Marcus Belgrave plays in a beautiful ensemble, packed with Tribe labelmates – Wendell Harrison on tenor sax & percussion, Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Harold McKinney on electric piano. Roy Brooks and Billy Turner are on drums and percussion, and the expansive vibe is fleshed out with the help of Lorenzo Brown on bongos and Daryl Dybka on mini Moog. The record includes Belgrave's beautiful epic "Space Odyssey", which has a long flowing cosmic groove, nice electronics, and haunting trumpet solos. William Bell was one of the first great soul singers to record for the legendary Stax Records in Memphis – an artist who really helped set the tone for deep soul singles to come from the likes of Otis Redding and Johnnie Taylor – and one whose early work is still some of the best he ever gave us! This well-done package brings together all of Bell's first 14 singles for the label, both a-sides and b-sides – standing together as a testament to all the greatness the singer brought to the fray right from the start – as Stax not only found a way to record him so much differently than he would have been handled in other spots, but also matured along with Bell to keep on creating fresh magic as the 60s moved on! As always with Ace/Kent, the presentation is wonderful – a detailed set of notes that matches the wonderful set list – which includes "Formula Of Love", "Just As I Thought", "Whatcha Gonna Do", "I Told You So", "Don't Stop Now", "Crying All By Myself", "I'll Show You", "Monkeying Around", "Ain't Got No Girl", "Every Man Oughta Have A Woman", "Never Like This Before", "Marching Off To War", "Soldier's Goodbye", "One Plus One", "Eloise", "You're Such A Sweet Thing", "Don't Make Something Out Of Nothing", and his great farewell to Otis Redding, "Tribute To A King". Fantasy, 1975. Near Mint- ... $19.99
If you've ever doubted the real jazz sensibility of Tony Bennett, then this is an album to change your mind – because Tony's working here in a marvelously unadorned setting – with only the piano of Bill Evans to back him up! The record's a rare gem from years after Bennett was cracking the pop charts, but was willing to pull back to the jazz of his roots – and the session's equally rare for Evans, who rarely worked with vocalists at this point in his career. The simplicity of the album is its strength – and together, the pair really sound tremendous – slightly faltering at times, but in a way that exposes a sense of humanity you might not find in other records, especially those by Bennett. A super huge hit for George Benson – and the record that took him from being a funky jazz guitarist into an R&B superstar – opening up sides of his talent that first emerged on his 50s R&B recordings as Little George Benson, but taken here into some very hip 70s territory! The album features George both playing and singing over arrangements by Claus Ogerman – some of Ogerman's best of the 70s, work that mixes together his trademark pillow of sound with a slightly funky bounce that's perfect for Benson's groove. The result is incredible – and the album is filled with loads of great songs – including George's excellent version of Bobby Womack's "Breezin", the hit version of "This Masquerade", and the cuts "So This Is Love", "Six To Four", and "Affirmation". An unusual assortment of work from the great George Benson – pulled together from other sessions for CTI Records – featuring one studio track, and four more live numbers! The studio tune is George's take on the Stax Records classic "Hold On I'm Coming" – which Benson sings with almost as much vocal intensity on his own as Sam & Dave brought to the original – followed by a tight solo that really matches the funky 70s vibe of the arrangements. Next are four more tracks from the Carnegie Hall sessions – one of his hardest-hitting albums of the time! In a way, the record returns George to his early years at CTI – particularly the album Beyond The Blue Horizon – as the set's got a stripped down smaller group, working in a tight blend of electric jazzy bits that's very nice! Ronnie Foster lays down some great keyboards on the set, Hubert Laws is on flute, and George himself plays a hollow body with a nice soulful tone – stretching out on some straight jazz on most cuts, but also hitting a few of his smoother notes from the mid 70s. Killer work from a group of American players who've all found a strong outlet for their talents on the Red Records label – an Italian company, but one that's really done a great job of keeping the fires going for players who sometimes don't get as much of a chance to record in the US! Every member of the group here is great – Jerry Bergonzi on tenor, Bobby Watson on alto and soprano, Kenny Barron on piano, Victor Lewis on drums, and either Curtis Lundy or David Finck on bass. The tunes are mostly originals by group members, which further makes the set sparkle – giving it a sense of originality that's quite different than the usual standards that seem to come up on other all-star sessions. Watson's horns, as always, are great – and Bergonzi's deeper tones provide a great sense of balance – all warmed up nicely by Barron's piano. Stories is an overlooked early set on Asylum – the kind of really special singer/songwriter material that really set the label apart at the start of the 70s! David Blue has this compelling vocal style that's moody, but down to earth – inflected here and there with guitar contributions from Ry Cooder, who's understated, but really brings out some special qualities in the tunes. Jack Nitzsche adds in some light strings at points – but overall, things are pretty spare and personal – and titles include "Looking For A Friend", "Another One Like Me", "Sister Rose", "The Blues", "Come On John", "Marianne", and "Fire In The Morning". Nice Baby & The Angel shows David Blue really starting to get some star power in his mix – a fuller set, produced by Graham Nash – with work from Nash on guitar, plus more guitar from Dave Mason and David Lindley – in a nice mix of roots elements, but which never overwhelm that unique sense of songwriting and vocals that set David Blue apart from the rest. Titles include "Darlin Jenny", "Troubadour Song", "Train To Anaheim", "True To You", "On Sunday Any Sunday", and "Outlaw Man". On the cover of Cupid's Arrow, David Blue might look a bit cheesy, what with his open shirt and all – but he's definitely the real deal, and very down to earth in his singer/songwriter approach – with a quality that's only underscored by the lineup on the set – a group that features Levon Helm on drums, Jesse Ed Davis on guitar, David Lindley on mandolin and slide, and Barry Goldberg on piano and organ, and also handling production of the album too. The shift from David's roots is a bit like that taken by other contemporaries who once started in more folksy territory, then found a new way to grow in the west coast singer/songwriter scene – and that means that things are more electrified, but still quite far from mainstream music – with original tunes from Blue throughout, and titles that include "I Feel Bad", "Maria Maria", "Primeval Tune", She's Got You", "Tom's Song", and "Run Run Run". Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2022. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A really beautiful little record – one that bills itself as coming from from creole roots and French chanson – and which definitely delivers the goods as promised! The rhythms are often nice and lean – bubbling, percolating elements that maybe echo some older styles from the Antilles – which are then blended with male and female vocals that have a spare, poetic quality – almost like some of the lyrics you'd hear in some of the classics on the Saravah Records label from years past – a mode that's also echoed strongly in the cross-cultural approach of the record! The whole thing's wonderful – a really special standout that feels very different than anything else we've heard in awhile – with titles that include "Rituel", "De Colere", "Si La Pluie Te Mouille", "Le Pied Dans La Tombe", "Si Rogre", "Petit Palace", and "Les Escailles De Chastete". ✨✧ Billy BondBilly Bond Y La Pesada – Vol 1 & 2 ... CD
Cloud Forest (New Zealand), 1970/1971. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Heady and heavy work from Billy Bond and La Pesada Del Rock & Roll – a guitar heavy group from Argentina, and one with plenty of blues rock overtones! The guitars are definitely turned up to 11 here – jamming with an intensity to match some of the best hard rock sides from Peru reissued by the Lazarus label in recent years – and like those sets, there's a sound here that's an intensification of earlier beat group modes – taken into much harder territory for the 70s. The production is great – earthy, trippy, and a little bit spooky – and the album's got an oddly unsettling feel, one that's familiar at first, but then increasingly estranged as the record moves on. Quite compelling, and with 16 tracks that include "Dueno De Tu Piel", "El Parque", "Buen Dia Senor Presidente", "Divertido Reventado", "Salgan Al Sol", "La Maquina", "Voy A Ver Un Amigo", "Para Que Nos Sirven", and "La Marcha De San Lorenzo". One of the best debuts in the history of hip hop – and one of the most important albums the genre ever produced! Criminal Minded is a landmark for a number of reasons. Among the biggest is, of course, that it was recorded with the late great DJ Scott La Rock – and he was soon to fall prey to the very street violence that BDP documented with such raw brilliance by KRS-One. Importance aside, Criminal Minded is simply a great, timeless record that no true fan of gritty classic hip hop should be without. The track list alone is a full chapter in the hip hop book of legends – with tunes like "Poetry", "Elementary", "South Bronx", "Super-Hoe", "Bridge is Over", and the "P is Free" remix. Also includes "Criminal Minded", "Dope Beat", and "9mm Goes Bang". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest albums ever from Booker T & The MGs – and very different than their early work! The record has Book & Co taking off with a stretched-out jazzy sound – carving expanded grooves that are filled with sweet organ solos, choppy guitar riffs, and some incredibly tight rhythm lines – more than enough to make this set a standout in the collection of any beat digger! Includes the massive "Melting Pot" – an oft-sampled jam that runs for over 8 minutes long – plus "LA Jazz Song", which features amazingly tight guitar work from Steve Cropper, and the nice cuts "Fuquawi" and "Chicken Pox". The solo debut of Eric Boss – a singer you might know as part of the duo of Myron & E – who gave us some great harmony soul records on Stones Throw and Timmion! Here, Eric is a much straighter soul singer overall – working with a sharp funky punch in the backings, with plenty of Mighty Mocambo help that you'd guess from the record's placement on their label! Tunes move nicely between 60s and 70s funky soul modes, but often with a more complex, contemporary vibe on the rhythms – and although the set features guest work from Gizelle Smith and Gift Of Gab, Eric hardly needs any help to make a strong statement on his own. Titles include "Bad Luck", "Closer To The Spirit", "I Wanna Ride", "Spiders", "Get Next To You", "Forward", "Merry Jane", and "Your Life Is Up To You". Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $42.99 44.99
The only album ever cut as a leader by tenor saxophonist Charles Brackeen during his early years – and a real standout in the catalog of the legendary Strata East label! The set's got an unusual history – in that it's part of the Dolphy Series, recorded before the label started by Clifford Jordan – as a way of giving a strong showcase to so many new ideas that were bursting in jazz during the late 60s! Here, Brackeen's tenor is set up with a trio of musicians most familiarly associated with Ornette Coleman – Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – a unit that's completely on fire, and freer than before – yet each graced with such strong individuality, every aspect of the record is a complete delight. Brackeen is amazing (why the hell didn't he record more like this at the time?) – but the bass, trumpet, and drums are all very distinct too – the perfect power of free improvisation when it's done right. Titles include "Rhythm X", "Hour Glass", "CB Blues", and "Charles Concept". LP, Vinyl record album

One of our favorite-ever albums on Blue Note – a great 60s session that features one of the most unique reed players to ever record for the label! George Braith takes a bit of a page from Roland Kirk – in that he handles a variety of oddly-tuned reed instruments, but with a wonderfully soulful focus – mixing this nice edge with more familiar soul jazz modes, at a level that makes his records of the time completely unique! The group also features some sublime organ lines from Billy Gardner – a player you might know more from previous records with Lou Donaldson on piano, but who's very open and expressive here – almost echoing Larry Young at times – which is great next to the work of Grant Green's guitar on the record! Braith's playing is incredible – slightly exotic, but also quite soulful – and titles include "Nut City", "Sweetville", and "Extension". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredible debut from trumpeter Jaimie Branch – an artist who seems ready to be one of the boldest new voices in jazz on the Chicago scene! Branch works here at a level that both lives up to an AACM legacy of experimentation, and the rich exploration in new jazz forms that we love from the International Anthem label – a short-lived imprint, but who who've really opened up a wider audiences for the best creative efforts from our home town! Branch's group here is great – with Tomeka Reid on cello, Jason Ajemian on bass, and Chad Taylor on drums – the last of whom brings his wonderfully loose, open, yet still-swinging style to play – and creates this magical flow that only seems to inspire Jaimie's bold trumpet work even more. The record is constantly creative, but deeply spiritual too – and also includes guest performances from Josh Berman on cornet and Matt Schneider on guitar. Includes an excellent jazzy instrumental stepper called "Tastee", plus vocal numbers like "Classical Funk", "Low Down", and "Fingers Do the Walking", all of which are pretty tasty. And oddly, the record is subtitled "Sylvia Presents" – as it was produced by Sylvia Robinson, who made the band include her single "Automatic Lover", a creepy Kraftwerk-esque dance number with a cold electro feel that's nothing like the rest of the record! A classic groover from Jocelyn Brown – presented here in a 2CD set that's overflowing with remixes! One From The Heart was a big mainstream moment for Jocelyn Brown – the crowning realization of all the great work she'd done in the club underground in the early part of the 80s – presented here with a slightly more crossover vibe, but a sound that's still pretty darn great in the end, thanks to Brown's tremendous vocals. Jocelyn's really keeping an older style of female soul alive here – amidst some beats and more programmed rhythms – belting things out with the pipes that first rose her to fame in the disco years, pretty proud and unabashed here. Rhythms are better than usual for a major label record like this – thanks to help from Hubert Eaves and Jellybean – and titles include "Love's Gonna Get You", "Ego Maniac", "True Love", "Caught In The Act", "I Cry Real Tears", and "Living Without Your Love". Feelings is a record that was issued on the tiny Precious label – home to only two Buari albums in its tiny catalog – and the set follows strongly on the work that Sidiku recorded in New York during the 70s, records that were initially issued just under his last name! The groove on some tracks is full of early 80s NYC touches – sweet electro keyboards that provide some great middle-ground shocks to the tunes – while beats crackle crispy at the bottom, and Buari sings these slinky soul vocals that are a lot more American than you'd guess from the Ghanaian recording of the album. But other numbers have more of a West Africa vibe – that updating of older modes that was taking place in Nigeria too. Titles include "Music", "Feelings", "Anowar", and "Yayo Papa". Two great albums from Cameo – back to back in a single get! Cardiac Arrest is early Cameo at their best – tight, funky, and totally out of sight! The groove here is very different than their 80s work – and the group have this amazing way of focusing all their energy down on the rhythm together, and snapping things along with a really unique approach to funk – one that draws heavily from the bass, but which also isn't nearly the same sort of bass-heavy sound that so many other copycat groups would go for in later years! The album's filled with gems – and includes the classic sample cuts "Rigor Mortis" and "Post Mortem" – plus the killers "Funk Funk", "Find My Way", and "Good Times". Easily one of their best-ever records – and for good reason too! We All Know Who We Are is one of our favorite Cameo albums of all time – a record that still has the group sounding plenty funky, but also maybe hitting a more sophisticated one – one that comes through perfectly on the message-oriented title track! There's a sense of compression going on here – everything right on the money, blending together perfectly – like Earth Wind & Fire at their classic mid-70s best – a mode that makes Cameo way more than just another funk ensemble on a major label! We're always completely in love with the smooth stepping title cut – "We All Know Who We Are" – a wonderfully catchy number that's also got a really righteous message, and kind of a "Damn Right I Am Somebody" intro, with the band rapping to each other before the song starts – and other tracks include "It's Serious", "Inflation", "It's Over", "Why Have I Lost You", and "Stand Up". The record's filled with Chicago soul talent like Tom Tom 84, Sonny Sanders, and Carl Davis, and it's a good updating of Gene's Chicago soul sound towards a style that's more modern soul-oriented. We've got a huge soft spot for the track "Does She Have A Friend?", which is a nice two-step groover, and the LP includes a number of other nice ones like "All About The Paper", "Let Me Make Love to You", and a remake of his classic, called "Rainbow '80". LP, Vinyl record album
(Sealed copy! Cover has a hype sticker & a tiny cutout notch. Shrink is open a bit near the cutout notch.)

Gene ChandlerDuke Of Earl (Vee Jay) ... LP
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good ... $14.99 19.99
A sweet soul classic from the young Gene Chandler! The record is built around Gene's hit "Duke Of Earl" – and it features Gene in a ridiculous looking "Duke" costume on the cover – but the record's a great one overall, and features some excellent late-night soul material in a sweet tenor-voiced harmony style! Bill Bunky Sheppard produced the record, and it's got a sophisticated approach that offers a number of different modes for Gene to shine – heartbreaking ballads, rousing uptempo numbers, and some cool exotic tunes. Titles include "Nite Owl", "So Many Ways", "Lonely Island", "Kissin In The Kitchen", "I Wake Up Crying", "Turn On Your Love Light", and "Daddy's Home". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono rainbow label pressing. Cover has light wear and aging, a small peel spot and a partially split top seam. Label has a name in pen.)

Erlon ChavesProcura-Se Uma Virgem (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CID/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 36.99
One of the grooviest albums we've ever heard from Erlon Chaves – a Brazilian arranger who got his start in the bossa generation, later did some more traditional music – but here explodes with this great fusion of European and Brazilian soundtrack styles! The record's credited to the Orquesta St Moritz – most likely a studio group with a European name, for good pedigree – but there's a huge amount of sounds here that rival some of the best modes coming from the EMI/Odeon label at the start of the 70s – particularly the mix of samba and bossa elements with larger funky arrangements, then given a more sophisticated twist – as you'd find in the music of Marcos Valle! Most of these tunes are instrumental, and there's some really wonderful organ work on a number of the titles – on tracks that include "Procura Se Uma Virgem", "Grilo", "Uma Velha Bossa", "Ba Oba Oba", "Vamos Nos", "O Anjo E O Diabo", and "Tema De Amor". A hell of a pianist, working in a hell of a trio – Cyrus Chestnut on keys, with backing from Peter Washington on bass and Lewis Nash on drums – all players who can relax into a groove and really do their own thing! Years back, Chestnut was a rising star on the major label scene – but we love him a lot more on a record like this – stepping between his own original material, and taking on some other classics, but which get re-arranged by Cyrus and the group – so that there's a really unified vibe to the whole record! Titles include "Nippon Soul Connection", "Cubano Chant", "Working Out Just Fine", "Thinking About You", "I Just Tell Jesus", "Epilogue", and "But Beautiful". CD

Impact/Onlyroots (France), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
One of the rarest dub albums of the 70s – a record that was originally done for the Impact label, but pressed up in a tiny amount of copies – even smaller than some of the better-known rare dub albums of the early years! Clive Chin is a righteous maestro throughout – superbly crafting together work from The Wailers Band, Now Generation, and Skin Flesh & Bones – stripping them down to their core, finding all the best elements, then swirling them together in some very heady, very echoey space! All mixes were done at Randy's, and titles include "Dubwise Situation", "Easy Come Dub", "Last Of The Jestering", "S Corner Dub", "Verdict In Dub", "Oh Jah Dub", "Shining Dub", and "Wire Dub". June ChristyBallads For Night People ... LP
Capitol, 1961. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Darkly beautiful work from singer June Christy – a lesser-remembered gem from the end of her years at Capitol Records! The mood here is very much in keeping with the "night people" setting of the title – a lonely space of empty streets, open windows, and late night saloons – first brought to record so beautifully by June on the Something Cool album, and wonderfully revisited in this fantastic set! Arrangements are by husband Bob Cooper, and although they're a bit less arch-modern than some of Christy's work with Pete Rugolo, they still really get at the boozy genius of June's vocals at their best. Titles include "I Had A Little Sorrow", "Night People", "Make Love To Me", "Shadow Woman", "My Ship", and "Kissing Bug". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label pressing. Cover has a small divot on the opening and light wear.)

Capitol, 1953. Very Good ... $3.99 7.99
From its booze-soaked title cut, to its haunting selection of lonely ballads like "Midnight Sun" and "Stranger Called The Blues", this is one of the most fantastic vocal jazz albums of all time – and a record that we'd recommend instantly to anyone! June Christy has an incredibly icy tone on the record, filled with sorrow, regret, and loneliness – all of which are amplified even more deeply by Pete Rugolo's eerie, off-kilter arrangements. Titles include "Something Cool", "It Could Happen To You", "Lonely House", "I'm Thrilled", and "The Night We Called It A Day". Fantastic stuff! Original Mono recording – from 1953. Stelvio CiprianiEl Ultimo Viaje (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
Sweet 70s work from the great Stelvio Cipriani – a soundtrack genius who may well have given the world some of the sweetest music of the decade! Cipriani's got a balance of lightness and dark here that's wonderful – plenty of the sorts of keyboard lines that always give his records a nice erotic current – but blended with some surprising darker passages that use spare percussion to set a different sort of mood – almost like there's a devil/angel spirit throughout the record, which creates a wonderful sort of tension! Yet as with most of the best from Stelvio, the music's never too dark for its own good – and the composer recognizes that we come to the set for the sweeter slinky grooves, of which there are plenty! CD features 23 tracks in all, including two bonus "disco" versions – and is done with the usual great style of other titles on this label. CD

Westbound/Big Pink (South Korea), 1977. New Copy ... $18.99 23.99
A soaring set from the later years of Detroit funk powerhouse Westbound Records – a record that has the label moving into clubbier territory, but with all the sharpness they brought to their earlier releases! Detroit producers Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey are at the helm of the record – and although the set has disco elements that include chorus vocals and upbeat rhythms, the approach is maybe more in a fast funk style than more commercial work of the time – which keeps things nice and lean throughout, at a level that's similar to early work from T Connection and some of the hipper groups of their scene! Both Motown legend Earl Van Dyke and Dennis Coffey play on the album – and tracks include "We Got Our Own Thing", "Free To Be Me", "Get A Groove In Order To Move", and "Sure Can't Go To The Moon". Vee Jay, 1961. Very Good ... $14.99
A real classic from Chicago soulman Dee Clark – and one of those crazy Vee Jay albums packaged in a cover with an image of young white love! Despite that cloying image, though, the record has a tremendous depth – and is a great illustration of the versatility of Clark at his best, especially on some of the lesser-known numbers. There's a vocal range here that easily matches Jackie Wilson at his best, and which nicely slides between ballads and more upbeat numbers – both done with some nice string-heavy arrangements. Titles include the classic "Raindrops", plus "Hold On", "Whisperin Grass", "Cindy", "Your Friends", "I Want To Love You", "Always Together", and "Portrait Of My Love". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most legendary albums on Blue Note – or maybe THE most legendary albums on Blue Note – a stunning session that shows what the label was capable of when it was really hitting on all burners – from the lineup to the music to the production – and even the classic cover art on the front! The album's a crowning achievement for pianist Sonny Clark – a player who'd already brought greatness to the world before the record, but really knocks it out of the park during the session – leading a razor sharp lineup that includes Art Farmer on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all coming together with some magic in the studio, crafting a sound that forever put Blue Note on the map! Tracks are long, open-ended, and almost effortlessly soulful – and titles include Clark's classics "Cool Struttin" and "Blue Minor", plus versions of "Sippin At Bells" and "Deep Night". Plus, this CD also adds 2 long bonus cuts – "Lover" and "Royal Flush" – both of which weren't on the original album! CD

Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $5.99
A killer hardbop session from the early 60s – one of Sonny Clark's later sides for Blue Note, and an album that features a great lineup of players that includes lesser-known Blue Note hornmen Charlie Rouse and Tommy Turrentine! The record crackles with the energy and imagination of Clark's best work for the label – leaping and loping along the grooves with a free-thinking approach to the tunes, and coming up with some exotically-tinged takes on the hardbop sound of the time – yet still allowing plenty of space for searing solo work. Ike Quebec joins the group on a few tracks as well, and titles include some of Clark's best compositions – like "Melody for C" and "Voodoo" – as well as the tracks "Eric Walks", "Midnight Mambo", and "Deep In A Dream". CD reissue also features a rare bonus cut, the great "Zellmar's Delight", and an alternate take of "Melody for C"! CD

Freestyle (UK), 1993. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A fantastic bit of UK soul from the early 90s – a set that was initially only issued as a white label promo, but which has a classic sound that takes us back to the days of Omar and Soul II Soul! The production is nice and lean – a bit in the homegrown style used on Omar's debut – and the rhythms have that nicely chunky quality that the UK was putting forth at the time, in a way that's nicely different than mainstream US R&B, especially of the new jack generation – all a perfect fit for the way that Rick Clarke can sweetly deliver a lyric in collaboration with guests who include Gina Foster, Imaani, Easton, Jill Francis, and others. The guests really help give the record that upbeat vibe from the UK soundsystem mode of the time – often way more collaborative than US soul – and titles include "Share My Love", "Do What We Gotta Do", "Fantasy", "Love Don't Strike Twice", "I Like To Party", and "Gonna Make You Happy". A mighty nice early album from Jimmy Cliff – a set that's maybe not as well-known as his massive hits of the 70s, but which definitely sets the tone for all the greatness to come! Jimmy's voice already has this raw, righteous power that's incredible – trained in the soul of the rocksteady generation, but given all these nice lean production touches that were handled by Cliff himself – clearly already really getting his ears around the best aspects of the forces available at Dynamic Studios! There's some key ringers in the set – including Winston Wright on organ and Tommy McCook on tenor – and The Heptones provide some mighty nice backing vocals too. An early standout set from Ornette Coleman – and a record that features him blowing on tenor, instead of his usual alto – as you might guess from the title! In a way, Ornette's playing on tenor is almost freer than his alto work – a bit more open-ended and exploratory, stretching out strongly – yet still also hitting that great rhythmic groove that made his Atlantic albums so great – thanks to rhythm from Jimmy Garrison on bass and Ed Blackwell on drums. Don Cherry's in the group on pocket trumpet, and the tunes are as provocative as their titles – which include "Ecars", "Enfant", "Mapa", and "Cross Breeding". LP, Vinyl record album

The recording's the first in a really groundbreaking stretch for the 60s – and it was fortunately finally issued by ESP Records a few years after the recording – providing a nice link between Coleman's earlier experiments and the sound of the younger generation usually showcased by the label. The group's a trio, with a sound that's quite different than the more rhythmic modes of Coleman on Atlantic Records – a freer, less structured lineup that features percussion from Charles Moffett and bass from David Izenzon. One track also adds in a string quartet – making the record one of Coleman's first experiments with this format – and titles include a 23 minute recording of "The Ark", plus "Doughnut", "Sadness", and "Dedication To Poets and Writers".
