Record Culture, 2020. New Copy ... $20.99 24.00
A great issue of this really cool publication – a book-styled journal that's filled with text and photos testifying a real love of records! The format is a bit like the Dust & Grooves book from years back – in that the magazine features interviews with folks amidst their records – but the scope is also wider, too – as the contents offer up conversations with creative people, and the way that the records influence their own work. There's loads of full color photos throughout – photos of record collections, the people who own them, and other related material – and this issue features connections and conversations with Sadar Bahar, Louise Chen, John Gomez, Apiento, Regularfantasy, Lauer, Beatrice Dillon, Public Possession, River Yarra, Anthony Naples and others. 227 pages – full color throughout! A epic issue of this always epic magazine – going after our hearts as always by featuring people and their record collections – and spending time with the subjects in their living, work and listening spaces, telling their stories in a way that makes it much more of a slice of life than other music magazines! As with other issues, this is one is super-thick– nearly 250 pages, and is heavy on photography – with DJ Kenji Takimi on the cover and surrounded by a truly massive collection – plus pieces on London club scene veteran Heidi Lawden, NYC's Nicky Siano (whose scene legacy goes all the way back to Studio 54), Christophe Lemaire, Cale Sexton, Yasmina Dexter, Ivan Berko, Vidal Benjamin, Georgia and more! Record Culture, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An issue of Record Culture that's maybe worth the price alone for its collection of images of rare party invites designed by Arthur Russell – but one that opens up with loads of great features in the usual RC way, too – interviews with people in the setting of their record collections, with detailed discussions on music, culture, and creative production – illustrated with well-shot photographs all the way through! At almost 200 pages, the magazine is more like a book – and features articles with Julianna Bartwick, Carla Dal Forno, Misha Hollenbach, Thomas Bullock, Dubby, Marie Davidson, Bell Towers, and others. Also comes with a bonus book – a look at the artwork of the label RVNG Intl, with dozens of pages of record cover artwork, along with notes. Magazine

This time round, features are on Alexis Le Tan, Ron Morelli, Eddie Ruscha, Phil Mison, Andee Frost, Kim Ann Foxman, Suso Saiz, Joe Goddard, and others – and there's also a very cool section on rare party invites by Keith Haring! Tim BlakeCrystal Machine (blue vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Egg/Culture Factory, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Fantastic sounds from Tim Blake – an artist who previously worked with Gong, and sometimes worked with Hawkwind – but who really came into his own on this legendary album of electronics! Tim works here on a self-constructed "crystal machine" – a bank of electronics that was often played in performance to front some trippy film installations (as shown on the cover) – which perfectly suited the stretched-out spacey style of his music! The vibe is maybe a bit like early Tangerine Dream, but with some of the warmer modes of the French electronic scene of the time – and titles include "Midnight", "Last Ride Of The Boogie Child", "Synthese Intemporal", and "Crystal Presence". Culture Factory/LMLR, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A classic bit of stretched-out spaciness from the early days of Virgin Records – two side-long tracks that are filled with lots of cool keyboards, percussion, and other hip instrumentation! The record's the brainchild of Cyrille Verdeaux – who plays piano, organ, mellotron, and even gong on the set – working with a different group on each side – guitar, vibes, bass, and percussion on side one – and on side two, tenor from Didier Malherbe, guitar from Steve Hillage, and synth from Tim Blake! The sound is a bit too relaxed to be jamming, but definitely has a nice sort of proggish vibe – never sleeping, and always nice and exploratory, even when spacey. LP, Vinyl record album

Tracks are nice and long – with that mix of sharp skills and whimsey that made this period of Gong so unique – and titles include the "Crystal Gnome" and "Radio – Gnome I & II" suites, plus "Mister Pyxie", "Deep In The Sky", "You Can't Kill Me", and "Titicaca". ✨✧ Hugh Hopper1984 (red vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
CBS/Culture Factory, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first-ever solo album from Hugh Hopper – best known as the bassist for Soft Machine, but an equally creative artist on his own! The album is a bit more experimental, and sometimes more jazz-based, than Hugh's work in the bigger group – a blend of odd acoustic sounds with slight electronic elements – sometimes a bit abstract, sometimes a lot more focused and tuneful! The album's a key underground expression from the bigger UK jazz rock scene of the time – proof that its more adventurous roots were still present in the best players – and Hopper's work here on bass, percussion, and mellophone is augmented by a shifting array of players who include John Marshall on percussion, Gary Windo on tenor sax, Malcolm Griffiths and Nick Evans on trombone, Lol Coxhill on soprano sax, and Pye Hastings on guitar. Titles include "Miniluv", "Minipax 1", "Minitrue", "Miniplenty", "Miniluv Reprise". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic book on a unique slice of soundtrack culture – the rise of the sci-fi soundtrack in the 60s and 70s, which also matched a real rise in new musical styles too! The book is filled with color images of vintage records, but is also way more than just an artwork book – as the authors have interviews with some key composers – including Stu Phillips and Laurence Rosenthal – and really provide a history of the genre through the 80s, which might have been its biggest decade on vinyl! These guys gave us a great book on horror soundtracks – Blood On Black Wax – and this book may well even top that one. 270 pages, full color, hardcover. Book

✨✧ Errol Brown & The RevolutionariesCulture Dub/Medley Dub (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two classic albums of dub from Erroll Brown – both maybe a bit more obscure than his classics of the time, but which also show the real depths of his talents! Culture Dub is a batch of instrumental dubs of songs from Culture – who were then riding high after their Two Sevens Clash album – taken here by Brown into very moody, very abstract territory – a stretched-out, spacey sound that has all sorts of cool guitar and keyboard elements bubbling amidst the murky basslines and drums. Titles include "Everyday Love Dub", "Skillful Dub", "Iron Sharp Dub", "Freedom Jam", "Deep Root Dub", and "Harder Than The Rest Dub". Medley Dub is a very different record overall – one that reworks older recordings from Sonia Pottinger's catalog of the late 60s and early 70s – rocksteady modes taken into dub territory, with really amazing results! You'll hear momentary echoes of the old amidst the soundclash of the new – and titles include "Revelation Of Dub", "Trinity Of Dub", "Tip Top Affair", "Engineer's Special", "Natty Dutty Dub", and "Swing & Dub". 2CD set features 24 more bonus tracks – Culture-related tracks that include "Work On dub", "Dog A Nyam Dub", "Freedom Rock", "Natty Dub", and "Jah Rastafari (version)" – and 15 other Brown dubs from the late 70s – including "Merry Go Round Version", "In The Park Version", "Lick Version", "Blue Bird Dub", "Revolutionary Version", "Stormy Dub", and "Road Hog". Ahmed (Pat Thomas/Antonin Gerbal/Joel Grip/Seymour Wright)Nights On Saturn (Communication) ... LP
Astral Spirits, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
That's a picture of legendary bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik on the cover, and the title of the record hints at the legacy of Sun Ra – both references that should really give you an idea of the spirit of the sound within! The liner notes are by pianist Pat Thomas, who calls for a deeper exploration of the influence of West African Islamic culture on American jazz – but despite that text, and the group's name, the overall feel of the record is very much in the full-voiced sort of improvisation that we've come to love from Thomas in many different settings over the years! The quartet features Seymour Wright on alto, Joel Grip on bass, and Antonin Gerbal on drums – and all players do a great job of playing freely, but also handling the sound in these chunks that are inherently rhythmic, even though they've got a very different feel than standard jazz changes! Wright is especially compelling – with these repeated cries on alto that really give a special voice to the record – and the group performs one long improvisation, recorded at London's Cafe OTO. Who'd have ever thought the Cuban embargo would create a useful situation for a dried-out rocker to suddenly have great record sales again? Can't blame the old guys for falling for Ry, and you've got to give them credit for doing a good job – but dig this one for the music, and not just because we're Americans who've pretended that Cuba didn't exist for 40 years! John CaleHelen Of Troy (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Island/Culture Factory (France), 1975. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
One of John Cale's greatest moments as a solo artist – a wonderfully dark record that also features lots of great guitar from Chris Spedding, plus electronics from Brian Eno too! There's a stark, flat tone to Cale's lyrics here – a quality that almost echoes some of Eno's albums from around the time, especially the first two – but which takes on some shapes and phrasing that are definitely in the spirit of John's larger body of work too. But man, there's some very spooky bits here – even where you wouldn't expect them – that sense of surprise that Cale could always bring to sweeter moments with the Velvet Underground, re-focused here wonderfully for his own needs. Titles include "Cable Hogue", "Engine", "Save Us", "My Maria", "I Keep A Close Watch", "Helen Of Troy", and "Sudden Death" – plus a cover of Jonathan Richman's "Pablo Picasso". CD

A totally excellent bit of funk from Chico Hamilton – working with a great group that more than helps their leader live up to the album's title! The record's a real lost gem – and it's got Chico working in much funkier territory than before, grooving with complicated rhythms, and a heavy sound that features lots of work on organ and guitar. Lowell George (of Little Feat fame) is playing slide guitar in the group, giving the sound a great, muddy propellant – which only gets stronger with the help of Simon Nava and Sam Clayton on congas, plus heavy organ and piano by Stu Garner, Jerry Aiello and Bill Payne. Includes the killer Latin groover "Conquistadores 74", plus "Stu", "Feels Good", "Fancy", "Stacy", Gengis" and "I Can Hear The Grass Grow". CD

Wilfilms/Luaka Bop, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 20.99
Amazing sounds from William Onyeabor – space age keyboards mixed with electro funk mixed with Afro beat, snakey sax lines, and lots lots more – a really mind-bending album that's well-achieved legendary status over the years! Each song takes up a side of the record – but spins out in ways that are very different than Afro Funk work of a decade before – especially on the long jam "Let's Fall In Love", which feels as if some NYC breakdancers were plopped down in Lagos as invaders from space – and given the tools and power to reshape Nigerian culture completely to their own ends! "Good Name" has great electro appeal too – percolating beats, amazing keyboards, and this spacey blend of words and rhythms that's completely mindblowing! LP, Vinyl record album

Matana RobertsCoin Coin Chapter Four – Memphis ... CD
Constellation (Canada), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99 14.98
The fantastic fourth installment in the Coin Coin project by Matana Roberts – issued quite a few years after the third, but well worth the wait! Matana recently described herself as an "arts adventurer" – and that's a pretty great term for her role on the record, which is far more than jazz – because Roberts uses the format as a springboard to explore layers of culture and identity, both historical and personal – as she mixes spoken and sung passages with searing solos on alto and clarinet! The core group also features some really bold guitar work from both Sam Shalabi and Hanna Marcus – the latter of whom also adds in some fiddle and accordion – alongside bass from Nicolas Caloia, and a mixture of drums, vibes, and other percussion from Ryan Sawyer. The record's got a very special sound – in the same "beyond jazz" territory of recent gems from the International Anthem label – and the group also features guest work from Steve Swell on trombone and Ryan White on vibes. Titles include "Wild Fire Bare", "Piddling", "Shoes Of Gold", "Fit To Be Tied", "As Far As The Eye Can See", "Trail Of The Smiling Sphinx", and "How Bright They Shine". CD

Profile, 1984. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The classic self-titled debut LP from Run-DMC – one that not only changed hip hop, but much of modern pop and rock forever! There's little we can add to the canon for this record, but the way Run-DMC ushered in a new era in contemporary urban culture, a harder hitting style of rap that managed to bust out of the inner cities and into consciousness of an entire generation, was unforeseen and never to be duplicated to say the least. You can literally call this album revolutionary without sounding heavy handed, it's something very few artists can ever hope to achieve. Amazing! Tracks include "It's Like That", "Sucker MC's", "Rock Box", "Jay's Game", "Hard Times", "30 Days", "Hollis Crew", "Wake Up", and "It's Like That" – and this expanded edition includes the bonus tracks "Rock Box (B-Boy Mix)", "Here We Go (Live At The Funhouse)", "Sucker MCs (Live)" and "Russell & Larry Running At The Mouth". Lilly TchiumbaAngola – Songs Of My People ... CD
Monitor, 1975. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really unique little record – an album of original songs based on older tradition, and one that interweaves elements of Portuguese culture with deeper roots of Angolan music! Lilly Tchiumba penned all the tracks herself, and sings in the Angolan language of Kimbundu – but there's a mix of percussion, guitar, and soaring vocals that echoes strongly with rootsier Brazilian, Cuban, and Haitian styles too – maybe in part because the Monitor label did such a wonderful job of recording the songs, and giving them this righteous, powerful vibe that still holds up strongly over the years! And by all of that, we almost mean that there's this sort of trans-global power to the whole record – one that moves beyond just a regional expression of culture, and past any sort of basic ethnographic mode – a lot like the Songs Of Protest album by Zelia Barbosa, also on the Monitor label. Titles include "Manazinha", "Gilagi Bu Kanga", "N'Zambi", "Mona Ki N'Gui Xissa", "Luanda M'Bolo", and "Kubata Di Rosinha". CD

The record has James working with the pre-JBs James Brown Band – a tight assemblage of players who really know how to craft an off-kilter groove. The guitar's popping on the beat here as much as the horns, making for a syncopated groove that's utterly fantastic – as tight as a drum, and as funky as one too! Beautiful grooves from Alex Malheiros – best known for his bass work in Azymuth, but stepping out here in a warm and wonderful set of his own! The groove here really takes us back to the sunny, soulful fusion we first loved when Azymuth hit the scene in the 70s – and Malheiros' guidance of the groove is really felt strongly in the album's warm-rolling basslines – a beautiful complement to a lineup that also includes Fender Rhodes, tenor, soprano sax, flute, trumpet, and trombone – plus a bit of occasional vocals from Sabrina Malheiros! Production is wonderful – handled by Daniel Maunick with some of the warmth of his Incognito work – and IG Culture comes in at the end to remix four of the album's tracks – almost creating a mini-modern suite to complement to the core 70s vibe of the record. Titles include "The Wave", "Corpo", "Copa A Noite", "Solar", "Sem Pressa", "Baixo Partido", "Serenity", "Uno Esta", and "4 Eyed Viper" – plus remixes of "The Wave" and "Uno Esta", the latter of which is a version of the Bobbi Humphrey classic! The set was a real surprise at a time when Johnny was at the top of the charts with a succession of hits for Columbia Records – and the author does a really great job of placing the record, both in Cash's career, and in the overall milieu of music at the time – nicely situating the album's appeal with the folk crowd that his label was also doing a lot to woo during the period. The album was quite controversial, and the book looks at the response to its release as well – in this softcover edition of 279 pages, with some black and white images. Book

Atlantic, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
Just when you thought Prince Paul and Cat Power would never make a record together PRESTO – it's the new Handsome Boy album! HBMS takes a bit more of a chillout tack with this long overdue second opus – with lots of laidback beats and samples, and a surprising amount of live instrumentation! The gleeful, sarcastic comedy of the stellar first album remains intact, with some genuinely amusing skits (including one with Jay Z appearing under the pseudonym Hines Buchanan), and the deep range of guest vocalists isn't as surprising as how strong their work is in the best tunes. It would have been pretty easy for Prince Paul and Automator to find a bunch of interesting names to flesh out their big pop culture frappe, but something else altogether to make trippy hip hop tracks featuring Cat Power and the Hieroglyphics make sense on the same record. A pretty solid set from the most adventurous pseudo duo in the game! Guests include Del The Funky Homosapien, De La Soul, RZA, Lord Finesse, AG, Rahzel, Jazzy Jay, Qbert, Mike Patton, Casual, Hieroglyphics, Grand Wizard Theodore, El-P, John Oates, Pharrell, Kid Koala, and George W. Tracks include "If It Wasn't For You" with De La, "Are You Down With It" with Mike Patton, "The World's Gone Mad" with Del and others, "It's Like That" with Casual, "I've Been Thinking" with Cat Power, "Rock And Roll (Could Never Hip Hop Like This) Pt 2" featuring Lord Finesse, Qbert and others, First. . .And Then" featuring Dres from Black Ship, "A Day In The Life" featuring RZA, AZ and others and more, plus intro/outro by Father Guido Sarducci. Future Rootz, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great criss-crossing of sounds and styles – one that brings together African roots, contemporary funk, and a great array of dancefloor modes served up by the various producers on the project! The record reminds us a lot of some of our favorite French work in this mode from the start of the century – particularly the Africanism series – and as with some of those records, legendary drummer Tony Allen is on hand, lending his strong arm on the kit to the grooves of the Chicago Afrobeat Project! Most tracks are nice and long – which makes the album like getting a whole stack of 12" singles – and titles include "Cut The Infection (Sol Power all stars rmx)", "I No Know (Jose Marquez Afro-House no go die rmx)", "Afro Party (Ron Trent dub)", "No Bad News (Maga Bo rmx)", "Sunday Song (Afroqbano rmx)", "White Rhino (Sound Culture rmx)", and "Afro Party (Kevin Ford rmx)". A really unique record from Peven Everett – very different than most of his other work, but equally great! The "My Brazil" reference in the title hints at the style of the work – a bossa-inspired session that has Peven singing gently and soulfully, with mostly just acoustic guitar and percussion to back him up. The sound is incredible – kind of a cross between Joao Gilberto and D'Angelo – with a mellow, laidback style that's immediately infectious. The CD's only got 5 tracks – but every track's a winner, and the album's a pure expression of genius from one of the richest living artists we stock! Mercury/Monkey Dog (Germany), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A unique little record – unlike anything else we can think of – one that combines the hippest side of the 60s soul jazz vibe with that decade's popular love of spy culture too! The set's mostly instrumental, but has a few dropped-in vocals that really open things up – and the whole thing was cut in Chicago for Mercury by this group that included Clarence Perry on tenor, Richard McCrea on organ, and legendary soul composer and producer Ed Townsend on piano! Townsend produced the whole session, and he also does some great spooky narration on the track "Do The Monkey With James" – a spy-themed dancefloor track that's totally great! Most of the set's a batch of soul-oriented instrumentals with a spy/James Bond vibe – including a few Bond themes, plus nice originals like "Goldfinger's Got the Blues", "James Goes to Soulville", and "James Out Of Sight". The whole thing's totally groovy, with a great mod soul instrumental feel. It's a very unique record, and we still can't figure out why Mercury released it – but who cares, since the whole thing's great! LP, Vinyl record album

Amazing! A great slice of New Orleans soul from the 70s – a record that replicates the "Indian" culture in the Mardi Gras scene – and which is most notable for featuring work by The Meters as well! The groove here is kind of Meters-styled funk, mixed with some fuller New Orleans mode – as the core Wild Tchoupitoulas group get a nice kick at the core – which makes their lyrics and calls come off even better than in a live setting! The album also gets kickass production from Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn – and is one of the crowning funk jewels in Toussaint's crown for the 70s. A beautiful tribute to one of the greatest record stores of all time – and a place that was crucial in the formation of what we do at Dusty Groove too! Wax Trax Records began as a store in Denver in the mid 70s – influencing a generation of young punks in that city, before then moving to Chicago a few years later – where it became a key outpost for all sorts of underground culture from around the globe! We grew up as young shoppers in the store, and it forever changed the way we thought about music – and this fantastic film really gets at everything that made the place great, and then follows the growth of Wax Trax as they launched a label that gave them an even stronger global impact by the end of the 80s. The film's also tells the love store of the couple behind the legend – Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher – and features commentary and contributions from an all-star lineup that includes Steve Albini, Dave Grohl, Jello Biafra, Al Jourgensen, David J, Richard 23, Ian Mackaye, Trent Reznor, and many others – plus an insane amount of vintage footage that reminds us how exciting a city Chicago used to be! A second heavy dose of sounds from the Panamanian scene of the 60s and 70s – a long-overdue companion to the previous volume of the series on Soundway, filled with rare gems that are finally getting their first exposure to the world outside the isthmus! The sounds here are completely fresh – somewhat Latin-styled in the rhythms, but often put together in ways that are quite different than any more familiar music of the time – touches of tropical styles, funky grooves, and other odd elements that really keep things interesting – shifting our ears way past any easy expectations, and making us love the Soundway label all over again for their massive work in digging up the rare stuff! ✨✧ VariousTell It To Me – The Johnson City Sessions Revisited ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 20s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds in the birth of country music – and equally important to other American folk styles as well! The music in this set all came from two special stretches of recording by Columbia Records – sessions done in Johnson City, Tennessee – in October of 1928 and 1929 – when the label ventured south, and sent out a call for musicians of all types from Appalachia – in a mode that rivals the legendary Bristol sessions that many folks claim as the big bang of country music! The sides marked one of the first times anyone tried to collect so much regional music on record, and bring it out to a larger audience – and the huge amount of work here offers up a cross-section of different styles of the area – some of which were later featured in Harry Smith's Anthology Of American Folk Music. The Johnson City tracks are maybe a bit less commercial than some of the Bristol sessions – less of these tracks were hits, as most came out in the wake of the Great Depression – but the whole thing is a wonderful look at the very vibrant culture of regional music in and around eastern Tennessee. The package features 26 tracks in all – beautifully remastered from rare discs and sound cylinders – and includes work by Jack Jackson, Grant Brothers, Roane County Ramblers, George Roark, Bill & Belle Reed, Charlie Bowman & His Brothers, Richard Harold, Proximity String Quartet, Ellis Williams, Ira & Eugene Yates, Clarence Ashley, Moatsville String Ticklers, and many more. Amazing work from singer Dee Alexander – a wonderfully soulful album of jazz vocals, and one that we'd rank right up there with our favorite records by Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! Dee's a singer who's worked in Chicago for years, but we've honestly only begun to appreciate her talents of late – possibly because she's really hipped up her sound a lot over the years, picking up a range of spiritual, soulful influences that push her music to a whole new level – as you might have heard on her recent collaboration with IG Culture. The music on the set is wonderful too – work by Chicago players we know, but have never heard this strongly before – grooving in modal and soulful modes behind Dee's great vocals, with a lineup that includes Miguel De La Cerna and Michael Logan on piano, Harrison Bankhead on bass, and Leon Joyce on drums and percussion. At some level, the music maybe echoes specific 50s modern modes – some west coast, some Gerry Mulligan styles – but there's also a much more contemporary vibe to the recording, one that comes partly from the mostly original material by the leader. Maybe the first-ever collection of the work of this important group from Djibouti – a huge state-financed ensemble whose performances were captured on tape for radio, but never issued as regular commercial albums at the time! 4 Mars take their name from a key moment of independence in the young nation – and they're a very powerful force on these recordings from the 80s and early 90s – bringing together a huge amount of current concepts from the East African scene, all within a very large, shifting array of singers, percussionists, and horn players too! At times, the rhythms almost seem to echo Jamaican music, but there's also currents of Ethiopian and Sudanese styles too – no surprise, given the crossroads of Djibouti, which maybe makes the group as welcoming to outside styles as they are importantly representing their nation's culture. The last album ever recorded by Trinidad calypso legend Lord Invader – and a set that really sums up all the genius he brought to his too-short career! At a time when the music was really entering the mainstream in commercial ways, Invader keeps things very spare, stark, and basic here – reminding us that at the core, calypso was not only a really revolutionary musical style in the Caribbean – but also a way for under-represented cultures to really get a chance to speak out! Lord Invader does plenty of that here – mixing social commentary with a fair bit of wit, all while the percussion is going crazy at the core – on titles that include "Cat O Nine Tails", "Crisis In Arkansas", "Fidel Castro", "My Experience In The Reeperbahn", "Me One Alone", "As Long As It Born In My House", and "Steel Band War". An astonishingly rare treasure by exotic jazz genius Lloyd Miller – originally issued by East West Records in a run of just a few hundred copies! Recorded at The University Of Utah, it's a wonderful synthesis of the eastern and otherwise globally-inspired instrumentation Miller is beloved for, and the western jazz styles of his earlier years playing behind Don Ellis, Eddie Harris & others. A fantastic look at the groundbreaking sounds of the Disques Debs label – one of the most important companies producing music in the French Caribbean – and an imprint whose impact was strongly felt on the other side of the Atlantic as well! The core of these grooves is that compelling biguine rhythm that flowed from Guadeloupe – almost a mix of Latin and jazz, but with a different sort of vibe of its own – which was then interwoven with elements from Cuban, European, and African styles amidst the initial decade or so of recordings on this set! Debs had strong ties with Paris, and a bit with the West African scene – and their recorded legacy almost follows old colonial paths, but in reverse – creating this wonderful criss-crossing of cultures amidst their grooves. The set features covers of material by Michael Jackson and Queen – but it's far from gimmicky, as it's got lots of original numbers too – really great music that evokes a time past, but with a 21st Century ear – that great sense of new appreciation for Latin cultures that we've been getting from groove diggers of late! Strut (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The package is wonderful – loads of vintage photos and great notes in the best Strut Records way – and titles include "Douce Kombass" by Henri Debs Quintet, "Mr Morin" by Joseph Lacides, "Lan Mise" by Geno Exilie, "Feeling Happy" by Cyril Dias Et Son Orchestre, "Ces P'Tits Je T'Aime" by Daniel Forestal Et Sa Guitare, "Assez Fait Cancan" by Guy Conquette, "Stanislas" by Eric Virgal, "Meringue Mondey" by Remy Mondey, "Si I Bon Di I Bon" by Le Ry-Co Jazz, "Salvana" by Dolor Et Les Diables Du Rhythme, and "Van Van" by Henri Guedon Et Les Contesta. Fania, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest reissues to come from the newly-invigorated Fania Records – a brilliant exploration of the sound of Latin Soul that broke hard in the New York scene at the end of the 60s! The package is equally heavy on the "soul" as it is on the "Latin" – so alongside the expected boogaloo and shing-a-ling styles, you'll also find a fair number of tracks that have a much more soul-based style – a sound that echoes the modes going down in African-American culture at the time, but which comes off slightly different here – thanks to some unusual rhythms, instrumentation, and production techniques! The track list goes way past the obvious and overly-familiar – thanks to great compilation efforts by Adrian Gibson, Dean Rudland, and Lubi Jovanovich, who also wrote the notes. Titles include "Do You Feel It" by Joe Cuba, "Big T" by Tito Ramos, "Johnny's No Good" by Joe Bataan, "Brother Where Are You" by Ralfi Pagan, "Black Brothers" by Tito Puente, "Either You Have It Or You Don't" by Charlie Palmieri, "New York Soul" by Ray Barretto, "Si Dame Tu Amor" by Cafe, "Boogaloo Lebron" by Lebron Brothers, "Que Se Sepa" by Roberto Roena, "Red Garter Strut" by Fania All Stars, "Puerto Rican Soul" by Pete Bonet, and "Measure For Measure" by Alexander Review. Duke University Press, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful treatise on the lasting power of classic soul music – yet a book that also goes way beyond the simple readings and overdone cliches that are often attached to accounts of the music! Instead, author Emily J Lordi looks at not just the source recordings, but also the evolving theories about their role within black culture, and the larger American story – tracing shifts over time, while still focusing on the core contributions of artists like Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Isaac Hayes, and Marvin Gaye! The writing is smart, but never too academic – and Lordi does a great job of tying together the strands of her different arguments throughout. 217 pages, softcover. Book

Beacon, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A well-written book, and one that's about way more than just the records hinted at in the cover – as music critic Rashod Ollison tells his tale of growing up in the south during the 80s, living with upheavals in his household, struggles with his own sexual identity, and other issues that challenged him constantly – through times during which music provided a key solace. The book is Ollison's story, but also serves well as an essay on the role of music in the larger realm of African-American culture – and the way it can provide both inspiration and escape, motivation and a space for reflection. ✨✧ Nina SimoneFodder On My Wings ... LP
Carrere/Verve, 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked album from the legendary Nina Simone – recorded in Paris in the early 80s, and not circulated as much as some of her records from the 60s and 70s – but every bit as compelling in its own sort of way! Nina's working here with a greater array of global elements than on previous recordings – very much in that way that the French scene was embracing sounds from the Caribbean and African cultures in these post-colonial years, and using them to forge a wealth of wonderful new styles in the studios of Paris. The approach is still jazz-based, but with lots of earthy percussion, including some handled by Nina with her own piano work – a mode that's not foisted on Simone by another producer, but arranged and conceived by the lady herself. Lyrics are in French and English, and titles include "I Sing Just To Know That I'm Alive", "They Took My Hand", "Stop", "Liberian Calypso", "Vous Etes SEuls Mais Je Desire Etre Avec Vous", "Fodder In Her Wings", "Thandewye", "Heaven Belongs To You", and "Le Peuple En Suisse". Born Bad (France), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Very cool sounds from the French scene of the post-disco years – music that reflects that growing embrace of boogie rhythms on European dancefloors, but in ways that are often inflected with new wave and electro soul styles too! The music here is leaner and a lot more creative than the bigger Euro disco modes of a few years before – and often has that criss-crossing of soul, funk, rock, and post-punk modes that played big on the downtown New York scene of the early 80s – that Danceteria mode you'd hear on Ze Records, 99 Records, or other hip imprints of the time – but delivered here in a batch of tracks that are a lot more obscure! The Born Bad label has already tipped us off to groovy French sounds from the 60s, and punk work of the 70s – and this package is another one of their culture-opening gems – with titles that include "Easy Life" by New Paradise, "Play Boy En Detresse" by Style, "A Mon Age Deja Fatique" by Pierre Edouard, "La Degaine" by Trigo & Friends, "La Fourmi" by Bianca, "Gerard Vincent Par Gerard Vincent" by Gerard Vincent, "Ma Vie Dans Un Bocal" by Ich, "Les Crabes" by Attache Case, "Miam Miam Goody Goody" by Henriette Coulouvrat, and "Qu'Est Ce Qu'Il A" by Krootchey. Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A great double header from Honest Jons – a 2CD set that brings together volumes 7 and 8 of their London Is The Place For Me series! Volume 7 is first – a fascinating look at musical modes in London during the big years of postwar immigration – a time when former residents of the crumbling British Empire were flooding to London for jobs and a better way of life – often bringing along a huge amount of cultural experience in the process! This set follows wonderfully in the spirit of previous volumes of the series – bringing together a range of different sonic styles that were originally recorded in London as 78rpm singles – where a new wave of Caribbean and West African immigrants were fusing older styles with a newly modern sensibility, and often a fair bit of jazz as well! The set list is wonderful – a great array of well-chosen material – and titles include "Wa Sise" by Willie Payne & The Starlite Tempos, "The Emperor Of Africa" by The Mighty Terror, "Royal Wedding" by The Lion, "Modern Telephone" by Dai Dai Simba, "Sons & Daughters Of Africa" by Lord Beginner, "Caroline" by Trinidad Steel Band, "Ema Foju Ana Woku" by West African Rhythm Brothers, "Kana Kana" by Billy Sholanke, "Boul Ve Se" by Calypso Rhythm Kings, and "My Handy Man" by Marie Bryant. Volume 8 features a huge collection of work from the great Lord Kitchener – maybe one of the most important singers to move the music of the Caribbean to British shores during the postwar years – a time when he was a strong voice to new waves of immigrants arriving in London, and when he was also making a lot of inroads for criss-crossing post-colonial culture too! The base style is calypso, but Kitchener always handles the music with a spirit that's all his own – modern, witty, and urbane – often with some nice currents of jazz in the instrumentation, and plenty of social commentary that made music like this a great precursor to later righteous moments in jazz, funk, soul, and reggae. Titles include "No More Taxi", "Food From The West Indies", "Come Back In The Morning", "Pirates Of Paria", "Drink A Rum", "If You Brown", "Life Begins At Forty", "Mistress Jacob", "Africa My Home", "Kitch In The Jungle", "Tie Tongue Mopsie", and "London Is The Place For Me". Folkways, 1960. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The sounds of the Tuareg culture have gotten some surprisingly strong global circulation in recent years – thanks especially to a few key guitarists who've gained international attention – but this 1960 recording by Folkways Records may well be one of the first times the music of the nomadic culture got exposure on this side of the Atlantic – all handled in a raw style that's very different than some of the more commercial recordings of the past decade! There's not really any guitar on here – and all the instrumentation is acoustic, usually heavy percussion mixed with some stringed instruments – used in ways that are pulsatingly rhythmic, and often featuring chanted vocals as part of the ecstatic tradition in the roots of the Tuareg sound. Titles include "Hunting Song", "Azale", "Song Of The Enaden", "Tohimo Dance", "Tarakemt", "Chikishikishin", "Ilougan", and "Camel Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 22.99
A true revolution in Cuban music – not the familiar cha cha and pachanga modes of the pre-Castro years, but instead the huge wave of fresh styles and combinations that sprung up in the years to come! The tracks here aren't the kind of Cuban sounds that are locked in time by the all-star representations of the scene that circle widely – and instead, this music represents the younger, more experimental side of the scene – continually creating new styles and hybrids during the 70s and 80s, even at a time when most of the records weren't making it out to the world at large! Make no mistake, there's certainly elements of older Afro Latin rhythms, and Latin jazz instrumentation – but those are blended with new approaches to rhythm, instrumentation, and the overall role of the musicians and singers – on tracks that will really open up your ears. Gilles Peterson helped put the package together for Soul Jazz – and the whole thing's got the same hybrid hallmarks as his more recent recording forays in Havana – with cuts that include "Cancion Con Todos" by Grupo De Experimentacion Sonora Del Icaic, "Hast Las Cuantas" by Grupo Monumental, "Luna Wanestain" by Emiliano Salvador, "Te Quiero Porque Te Quiero" by Pablo Milanes, "Un Lamento Heco Cancion" by Los Reyes 73, "Dacapo" by Raul Gomez, "La Patica" by Paquito D'Rivera, "Rompe Cocorioco" by Juan Pablo Torres, "Mi Ritmo Caliente" by Juan Formell & Los Van Van, "Chequere Son" by Grupo Irakere, "El Son Del Campeon" by Conjunto Rubavana, and "Con Cadencia Y Con Dulzura" by Las D'Aida. Laurel Aitken & OthersSkinhead Train – Complete Singles Collection 1969/1970 (5CD set) ... CD
Pressure Drop (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD set ... $32.99
An insanely huge amount of work from British rocksteady legend Laurel Aitken – especially when you consider that this set of 138 tracks was issued in the short space of just two years! In truth, Laurel's not the lead artist on all the cuts, but he had something to do with all of them – either as a singer, songwriter, producer, or other creative force – all bringing to a variety of UK labels the experience he'd build up as a formative member on the growing scene in Kingston! The work throughout is marked with the wit that always made Aitken such a standout, and which also links his contributions to Jamaican music with larger Caribbean culture – but never in the watered-down style of his later revival work. The scope of music is amazing, and in addition to dozens of tracks recorded under his own name, the package features cuts by The Gruvy Beats, The Classics, Inner Mind, Winston Groovy, Sonny Binns & The Rudies, Tiger, King Horror, Pama Dice, The Cimarons, Trevor Lloyd, Dice & Cummie, Dice The Boss, and others. Sweet African funk from Jagger Botchway – a musician with roots in The Barons, Hedzoleh Soundz, and Kelenkye Band – stepping out here on his own in a heady brew of percussion, guitar lines, and horns! Some of the cuts are vocal, some are instrumental – and the mix of melody and rhythm is very unique – almost with Caribbean elements filtered into the more Ghanian styles you'd expect from Jagger – with a brightness in the grooves that fits well with the horn parts in the mix! And this special package doubles the content of the original record – by offering up all the album tracks, then adding in a full album of remixes too – which further emphasize the grit in the grooves. A young Jackie McLean at the height of his powers – really stretching out here, but never going too far out – a perfect balance between his modern bop of previous records, and his groundbreaking "new thing" jazz to come! The group is a relatively straight ahead one – with Walter Davis on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – but the tracks are all quite long, and have this really arch sensibility on Jackie's horn – this edge, this cry he didn't have a few years before – easily one of the freshest voices in alto sax at the time, yearning here to break free with new ideas and new modes of expression. Profile/Arista, 1986. Used ... $4.99
The massive third album from Run DMC – made at the top of their game – a pivotal effort that brought them to peak popularity and helped break hip hop in a huge way in the pop culture landscape! Part of the album's strength is its guitar-heavy sound on some of the grooves – produced by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons with a classic early Def Jam vibe, in the same manner that helped the Beastie Boys get their records in the hands of folks who'd never buy hip hop otherwise! That sound comes to culmination on the album's hit collaboration with Aerosmith on a remake of "Walk This Way", resulting in the commercial breakthrough, but the real triumph here is the increased complexity in both the lyricism, and the way Jam Master Jay serves up their beats – which makes for a stone classic all the way through, on tracks that include "Peter Piper", "It's Tricky", "My Adidas", "Proud To Be Black", "You Be Illin'", and more. Cultures Of Soul, Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 27.99
A really fantastic album of spiritual soul from a San Francisco church in the 70s – one of those rare and sublime albums that's equally appealing to fans of gospel as it is to fans of 70s soul! The arrangements and presentation are great – full of well-crafted grooves that move from gentle to midtempo – with shifting vocal leads amidst the larger group, who provide this beautifully uplifting vibe – maybe similar to the Voices Of East Harlem or the NYCC! The music here is somewhere in between those groups – as a few tunes actually pick up the pace, and echo the dancefloor modes of the NYCC – but the mix of male and female vocals has this vibe that's also got more of the open, earnest quality of the Voices – which makes for a really wonderful blend and a deep spirit all the way through. Fantastic funk from SJOB Movement – a 70s group who only cut a handful of records – all of them every bit as righteous and heavy as this one! The group have a perfect fusion of funk, psych, and other cool elements – all served up in a blend that's more straightforwardly soulful than some of their contemporaries, but not averse to trippier sidetracks too – especially when a bit of moogy keyboards come into the mix, and space things out nicely alongside the riffing guitars and tight horns in the groove! The sound is perfect – neither in a too-familiar Fela mode, nor in the too-dark style of some of the group's contemporaries – full of life, but never losing its focus – on cuts that include "Friendship Train", "Love Affair", "Odiaria", "let's Do It", "What Could It Be", and "Halleluyah". A heavenly set of funky tracks from the indie scene of the 70s – titles that were all recorded as singles for the gospel market, but which have a fair bit of funk in the rhythms! These tunes all have massive appeal well beyond their spiritual message – heavy drums, amazing basslines, and nicely gritty instrumentation that sets these cuts up right next to funky 45 treasures from the mid 70s – but which also gives them a slightly different feel, too – thanks to some uplifting messages in the lyrics, which also means that the vocal styles are nicely changed up from more standard funk-based lyrics! The blend is wonderful, and completely captivating – and we'd not heard most of these cuts before digging into the collection – which goes every bit as deep as the Good God gospel/funk collections on Numero. Titles include "If You See Me Doing Wrong" by Wearyland Singers, "I Don't Want To Be Alone" by Allen Gauff Jr, "Troubles Of The World" by The Christian Harmonizers, "Save A Seat For Me" by Vocal Aires, "Blackman Keep On Doing Your Thing" by The Original Christian Harmonizers, "Days Are Just Like People" by Zella Jackson, "I've Got Power In My Mind" by Preacherman Isidore Womack, and "Who's Your Boss" by Pearl Farano & The High Lites Of Joy. ✨✧ VariousBombay Disco 2 ... CD
Cultures Of Soul, 1980s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bombay grooves, but not just the disco promised in the title – as these cuts come mostly from the 80s years of Bollywood, and show Indian funk moving into a great new realm of styles! There's definitely a disco vibe at the core – and as in other scenes, the style stayed current a lot longer in India than it did in the US – but there's also some other great 80s elements at play, including some electro touches, bits of house, and even some bits that feel more like indie boogie material than the usual Bollywood groove! Together, the tracks are a real revelation – and push our understanding of Indian film grooves way past any simple cliches – and also have inspired us to start digging for these overlooked gems from later years too. The package comes with notes and images of the records – and titles include "Tadeer Ka Bashah" by Bappi Lahiri, "Aaya Sanam Aaya Deewana Tera" by Kishore Humar, "Pass Ao Na" by Asha Bhosle, "Saat Samundar Paar" by Sadhana Sargam, "Hotel Mein Bottle" by Sharda, "Dance Music" by Hridaynath Mageshkar, "Jab Chaye" by Asha Bhosle, "Main Jaadugar" by Kumar Sanu & Jolly Mukherjee, and "Disco Music" by RD Burman. Cultures Of Soul, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Think disco sounds only hit the dancefloors in the 70s? Think again – because this killer collection brings back a whole host of club-sounding gospel tunes from the time – proving once again that soul and gospel records have always gone hand in hand over the years! The vibe isn't mainstream disco, the kind you'd hear on the charts – and instead is the hipper side of upbeat styles – the funk and well-crafted rhythms used by some of the better indies during the disco generation, and that great run of underground club styles in the early 80s too! The righteous message of most of these tracks makes them pretty darn spiritual – and the whole thing almost feels like a precursor to some of the more uplifting soulful house of the past decade or so. There's loads of surprises here – so many cuts we'd never heard before – and titles include "You" by Gloria Griffin, "Faith Is The Key" by Enlightenment, "One More Chance Lord" by Delores Fuller, "No Greater Love" by The Testimonial Singers, "Give Your Best To The Master" by Shirley Finney, "Trouble Don't Always Last" by Masters Of Music, "Free Spirit" by Betty Griffin, "Jesus Is Going Away" by The Inspirational Souls, "Nowhere To Run" by The Gospelaires Of Dayton Ohio, and "What Kind Of Man Is This" by Enlightenment. Also features a few remixes – "Thank You Jesus (Steve Cobby rmx)" by Gospel Ambassadors, and "Trouble Don't Always Last (Rahaan edit)" by Masters Of Music. CD

✨✧ James BrownIt's A Mother (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
King/Culture Factory, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A definite mother from James Brown – the kind of all-funky album that few of his contemporaries could ever hope to match! If you've ever doubted the sheer raw power of James at the end of the 60s, the first few notes of this one will definitely make you a convert – and the stretched-out grooves as the album rolls on will pull you even further into the fold. Most tracks roll on with that improvised studio jamming style that James was hitting at the time – a pre-JBs mode that's not as long as later years, but which still makes you feel that there probably was plenty more recorded on the dates that didn't make it into the two-part versions of the tracks! And although James is singing on most numbers, the real focus is more on the band – hitting hard, vamping sharp, and grooving massively under shouted calls and directions from Brown. Titles include two great instrumentals – "Popcorn With a Feeling" and "Top of the Stack" – plus "Little Groove Maker Me (parts 1 & 2)", "Mother Popcorn (parts 1 & 2)", "Mashed Potato Popcorn (parts 1 & 2)", "Any Day Now", "You're Still Out Of Sight", and "I'm Shook" – as well as the great mellower number "If I Ruled The World" – redone here as an African-American anthem of pride and power! ✨✧ VariousTitan – It's All Pop ... CD
Titan/Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds from the Kansas City scene of the late 70s – a wealth of power pop work from the tiny Titan label – all brought together in one of the most brilliant packages we've ever seen from the Numero Group! Like most Numero releases, there's a great story behind this set – a tale of bounced checks, interstate culture, and a cadre of great groups who would have been huge – had they recorded this music out on the coast! Titan's way more than just a tiny label that managed to put out some killer singles back in the day – it's a pop powerhouse that shows just how much under-discovered genius the American scene can hold – music that really helps break down simple understandings of late 70s rock, especially when presented this well. The 2CD set features 42 tracks and a 40 page booklet – a great counterpart to Numero's Yellow Pills set – filled with notes on Titan, a complete discography, and a wealth of wonderful photos that really make this unique scene come alive. Titles include "Shark" and "Real Life Saver" by Gary Charlson, "No Way Baby" and "I Wanna Be" by Arlis, "It's Your Heart Tonight" and "Radio Heart" by Secrets, "Please Change Your Mind" and "Baby It's You" by Boys, "Rock N Roll Song" and "Radio City" by Bobby Sky, "The Last Song" by JP McClain & The Intruders, "Cry" and "Didn't Like It Anyway" by Gems, "Coit Tower" and "Drink A Toast" by Millionaire At Midnight, and "I Think About You" by Scott McCarl.
