Banda Black RioRebirth (aka Movimento) ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2002. Used ... $14.99
New work from one of the greatest Brazilian soul groups of the 70s – and they're still pretty darn great! The album's smoother and perhaps a bit less funk-oriented than some of Banda Black Rio's classic work – but it's still a perfect blend of Brazilian rhythms and instrumentation with American soul, handled in a mode that reminds us of recent albums by Ed Motta, with soulful vocals out front, and compressed instrumentation grooving around in a smooth funky style that's reminiscent of the glory days of mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire. The classic reference is no surprise, though, as the group's got some help from Brazilian soul legend Cassiano – who does the arrangements on some of the album's tracks – and a few other tracks feature remixes from London talents like Faze Action and others! Titles include "Samba Blum", "Aquarius", "Magia Do Prazer", "Nova Guanabara", "Candeia", and "Tabuleiro Da Cor". The whole thing's great – right up there with the best work of the samba soul generation, and the kind of record that would make the group huge, even if it were the only one they ever cut! CD
(Out of print, includes slipcase.)

Jimmy CliffRebirth ... CD
Hip-O, 2012. Used ... $4.99
A heck of a strong effort from Jimmy Cliff – and he's a rejuvenated force here on the appropriately-titled Rebirth – which is no doubt his best work in years! Jimmy's voice is as soulful as ever, even this late in the game – and this set of stellar Cliff originals and a handful of strong covers is the real deal! Hats off to Tim Armstrong for handing his hero with the utmost respect – and smarts – as the producer here. Strains of soul, ska and rocksteady inform the craft – all done with a timeless vibe. Includes "World Upside Down", "One More", "Cry No More", "Children's Bread", "Bang", "Reggae Music", "Rebel Rebel", "Blessed Love", "Ship Is Sailing" and more. CD

J Dilla & OthersRebirth Of Detroit ... CD
Ruff Draft, 2012. Used ... $14.99
Dilla beats and an allstar roster of guest Detroit MCs – and a strong debut full length from Ruff Draft Records! Posthumous releases by favorite departed figures can be a dicey proposition – and much to our relief, Rebirth Of Detroit delivers – with both high quality beats & rhymes, and positive mojo! Dilla didn't cop to current trends in his time on earth (except for the ones he started in the first place) so it stands to reason that the beats he had in the can before he departed would hold up strongly years later – and they do! The guests here bring their A-games, plus full respect and admiration for Dilla. Includes "The New Installment", "Detroit Madness" with Phat Kat, "Big Things" with Esham, "Let's Pray Together" with Amp Fiddler, "Requiem" with Allan Barnes of The Blackbyrds, "My Victory" with Boldy James, "Do It For Dilla Dog" with Illa J and Frank Nitt, "Jay Dee's Revenge" with Danny Brown and cuts by DJ Dez, "Houseshoes Was Spinnin'" with Quelle Chris and more. Ray MantillaRebirth ... CD
Savant, 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Ray Mantilla is reborn, after a health crisis almost took him down – but to us, he's also returning to his roots – that rock-solid approach to Latin jazz that's made us love his records so much over the decades! And like the best of those sets, there's a mixture of complex ideas and organic execution going on here – sounds that really push past the obvious, and showcase Ray's sublime understanding of color and tone as much as rhythm – but which feel almost effortless in the hands of Mantilla and his group! Players include Ivan Renta on soprano and tenor, Jorge Castro on bartione and flute, Guido Gonzalez on trumpet, Mike Freeman on vibes, and Edy Martinez on piano and Fender Rhodes – all shimmering nicely on tunes that include "Mia", "Philly Mambo", "Cumbia Jazz Fusion Experimental", "Rebirth Bata Rumba Experimental", "Martinez", "Yuyo", and "Preciosa". ✨✧ Max Roach & Anthony BraxtonBirth & Rebirth ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful step forward for drummer Max Roach – working here in very creative company with saxophonist Anthony Braxton! Although Roach could have easily rested on his laurels as a famous bop drummer – and have spent endless years touring on highly-paid revival/reunion tours – he was a true creative giant who never stopped expanding his talents, especially during the late 70s, when he was matching up with some of the greats of the avant garde. This album is a perfect example of that commitment to modernism, as Roach duets with Anthony Braxton on a set of 7 fantastic tracks that stand apart from individual work by either artist – more loose and open than earlier Roach work, but a bit more inside than some of Braxton's – with fresh results from both players that never fail to delight! Titles include "Dance Griot", "Birth", "Tropical Forest", and "Spirit Possession". LP, Vinyl record album

Louis XavierLadja – Jazz With A West Indian Soul ... LP
ADDA/Rebirth On Wax (France), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A great little session of electric funky jazz – with a bit of a West Indian twist – all of which makes the album a real standout from other efforts at the time! The session was recorded in Paris, and led by bassist Louis Xavier – but the killer talent is saxophonist Jo Maka, who plays some great alto and soprano on the set – cutting through the mix of percussion, electric bass, and keyboards with his really sharp sound! There's some nice Fender Rhodes on the album, strong percussion, and the best tracks have a kind of skittish percussion groove that's really more Afro-jazz than it is Caribbean – on titles that include "Delito", "Steps", "Migan", "Miss Bee", and "Helix". ✨✧ Wendell HarrisonReawakening ... CD
Rebirth/Octave (Japan), 1985. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Later work from reedman Wendell Harrison and the Tribe Records scene – a set that's got a slightly tighter feel than some of his earlier work, but still a relatively soulful vibe overall! Harrison leads the group on tenor, flute, and clarinet – but there's definitely a collective vibe to the music – which also features Harold McKinney on piano, Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Ralph Jones on soprano sax – part of a shifting lineup of artists who change from track to track – including Leon Thomas and Pamela Wise, who each sing a bit on the record. Thomas appears on the great tracks "Where Am I" and "Love Dream", both of which have a great mellow soul jazz vibe – and other cuts get a bit more out, and have more of the soaring spiritualism that got the Tribe scene going in the early 70s. Other titles include "Tons & Tons Of BS", "Winter", and "He's The One We All Knew". CD

✨✧ Georges Edouard NouelChodo ... LP
Rebirth On Wax (Netherlands), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A hell of a great little record – an album made by a keyboardist from Martinique, working in a Paris studio in the 70s – with all the wonderful cross-cultural elements you might expect! The music is definitely jazz at the core, and quite spiritual too – but the range of expressions and instrumentation are nicely varied, and go way past the obvious! Georges Eduard Noel plays a fair bit of Fender Rhodes – often with a strongly soaring approach that really works well with the bold percussion on the record – which not only includes drums, but also cowbell, guiro, congas, and lots of other instrumentation as well! The only other instrument in the mix is electric bass – but even so, the album's got a richness that's quite different from the usual piano trio record – as you'll hear on the tracks "Cesca", "Chodo", "Solingen", "Mazurak", and "Chandernagor". Elmer Bernstein/Shorty Rogers & His GiantsMan With The Golden Arm – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Decca, 1955. Very Good ... $5.99
One of the greatest jazz soundtracks of all time! Elmer Bernstein wrote the score to Otto Preminger's chilling film version of Nelson Algren's book The Man With The Golden Arm – a sad tale of jazz, gambling, and heroin addiction on the streets of Chicago (not far from Dusty Groove, in fact!) – and in doing so, he came up with one of the first jazz soundtracks to really work strongly with a dramatic narrative. The film's striking theme is played in a number of variations, either with orchestral backing, or in small combo format by Shorty Rogers & His Giants, a crack west coast group that features work by Bud Shank, Shelly Manne, Bob Cooper, and Pete Candoli. The tracks work perfectly together as a suite of tracks, even without the images of the film – telling a tale of temptation, sadness, tragedy, and rebirth. Titles include "Clark Street", "Breakup", "The Fix", "Zosh", "Frankie Machine", and "Audition". Worth the price for the Saul Bass cover alone! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Captain SkyPop Goes The Captain ... CD
AVI/Past Due, 1979. New Copy ... About September 1, 2020
Captain Sky is sort of a bargain-basement version of Bootsy Collins. He plays lots of heavy bass riffs, lays down long funk tracks with wicked vocals and trippy space funk lyrics – but somehow he's never worthy of a ride on the mothership. The record's not a bad one, and it's an interesting example of the huge space-funk influence the work of George Clinton had on the soul underground during the late 70s. Not that anyone did it nearly as good as the P-Funk crew, but there were always a host of folks like Captain trying their best. Tracks include "Moonchild", "Fearless", "Cream & Sugar", "Rebirth", "Hero", and "Ker-Runch". CD

Attytude/Diggers Factory (France), 2000s. New Copy ... $30.99
A great collection of work from one of our favorite side of the many talents of DJ Cam – his Quartet material, which is a more jazz-based take on the hip hop modes of his early days! Right from the start, Cam had a great ear for a classic groove – and here, he takes on a set of classics from the 70s, but set to his own beats and scratches, mixed with work on keyboards from Eric Legnini, trumpet from Alex Tassel, and guitar from Christian Brun! There's a bit of vocals on the record from Inlove, but most of the tracks are instrumental – and titles include "Think Twice", "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", "So What", "Montara", "Rebirth Of Cool", "You've Got To Have Freedom", and "Little Sunflower". Colemine, 2019. New Copy ... $7.99
The fantastic full-length group of The Harlem Gospel Travelers – a quartet trained on the male group gospel modes of older acts like the Soul Stirrers or Violinaires – but one who really shine strongly with a voice of their own, thanks to a set of all original material, and some nice funk-based currents in the instrumentation! The album's definitely a gospel record, but it resonates with those rare efforts on labels like Stax or Jewel, which could bring in musical currents from the secular world, to really help shape the spiritual message – opening things up way past the doors of the church, so that the positive spirit and sense of rebirth can spread out and touch the rest of the world. These guys are still very young, and we expect that we'll be hearing great things from them in years to come – but we're already plenty pleased with the results here, on tunes that include "Am I Doing Enough", "Oh Yes He Will", "Motherless Child", "Shine On Me", "Brighter Day", "Wash Me Lord", "On The Right Road", and "If You Can't Make It Through A Storm". One of the most classic albums on the Tribe Records label from Detroit – music that was too heavy for most of the world when it was issued in the 70s – but which has gone onto achieve legendary status over the years! Reedman Wendell Harrison leads the group in a set of soaring, spacious, righteous tunes – with great help from Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, and assorted other instruments, which he and Harrison play in the best AACM tradition. Phil Ranelin's also in the group on trombone – and other players include Charles Eubanks on keyboards, Ike Daney on drums, and Will Austin on bass – and the album also features some spoken passages by the Black Messengers, Oba and Vajava. The whole thing's fantastic – that strong collaborative spirit that graced the best part of the American jazz underground of the time – and titles include "Mary Had An Abortion", "Vol II Angry Young Man (parts 1 & 2)", "Consciousness", and "Rebirth". Verve/Aartrud (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99
A wonderful wonderful set from the British jazz scene of the late 60s – beautifully inventive large ensemble material, done under the direction of Neil Ardley – and featuring some of the best British jazz musicians of the time! The group's a showcase not only for creative young talent in the UK, but also for the growing sense of composition as well – and the music on the set is penned by Ardley, Michael Garrick, Mike Taylor, and Michael Gibbs – as well as new arrangements of work by Miles Davis and John Coltrane. As in the best material from Ardley, Garrick, and Gibbs, there's a really fresh way of coming together for the instrumentation – quite different than large group material in both the US, and even other areas of the 60s European scene – delivered with wonderful imagination by musicians who include Derek Watkins, Henry Lowther, Harry Beckett, and Ian Carr on trumpets; Michael Gibbs and Derek Wadsworth on trombones; Barbara Thompson on flute and soprano sax; Dick Heckstall Smith on tenor and soprano; Frank Ricotti on vibes; and even Jack Bruce on bass! VariousFrom The Archive Vol 2 – Compiled By Volcov ... CD
BBE (UK), 2010s. New Copy ... $7.99 19.99
A fantastic trip through the archive with Volcov – even if most of the cuts here are a bit more recent than those that usually get archival status! And yet in a way, many of these cuts almost went to the archives directly – especially in this digital age for modern soul and club, where so many great singles and albums don't make it onto vinyl – and fade fast in the fast rush of new music hitting the internet. That's why we love collections like this so much – as Volcov's done a great job of grabbing the best bits from the past decade or so, and weaving them together as a strong reminder of how much wonderful soul music is being created on this planet – most of it still waiting to be discovered. There's a few older bits here, but most tracks are contemporary – and titles include "Caterpillar" by Rebirth, "All That Glitters" by Carleen Anderson, "Let The Music Play" by Collective Peace, "Spiraling Prism" by Ian O'Brien, "Ori Space" by Ron Trent, "Turn It Around (Eric Lau rmx)" by Ruth Koleva, "Planet Birth (Xantone Blacq rmx/Volcov edit)" by Intuit with Andy Bey, "Lawra (Volcov edit)" by Tony Williams, "Blue Room (Kaidi Tatham's shokazulu rmx)" by Quentin Kane & Simon Sheldon with TK Blue, "Finding The Peace" by Skymark, "I Put A Spell On You" by Honey Sweet with Cindy Mizelle, and "After Life (part 2)" by Harry Whitaker. A great look at the brass band underground in New Orleans – an important scene that's steeped in tradition, yet which has bubbled forth with new energy in recent years! In some way, the brass band groups have taken a tip from the deep funk and jamband scenes – and have moved past a sense that they're stuck in time, place, and genre – moving forward with incredible energy to reach new ears with new sounds. At some level, the tracks on the set are done in the style that's been used for years – spare percussion, vocal refrains, and lots of horns – but at another level, there's a freely funky approach that shows that the New Orleans scene is more than worth all the fuss it's been getting in recent years! This set is amazing – a fantastically modern refiguring of Latin roots – with elements that stretch back to Palmieri's earliest charanga years and his Latin jazz rebirth, but used in ways that are very different – and very striking throughout! This great series just keeps on getting better and better – and we've got no problem saying that we really love this latest installment of Rewind! Duke University Press, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible look at the format of vinyl – put together by a guy who's got one of the hippest record collections we've ever seen! John Corbett's been writing about music, art, and other formats for decades – but his real labor of love is vinyl records – a format he continued to embrace even at the height of the CD era – so much so that he talked Downbeat magazine into letting him write a special column on musical delights that had never made it to the digital format! Corbett helped plenty of music get reissued on CD himself – thanks to countless label projects – but he also always held a special place in his heart for the kinds of records that never got reissued – and those are the sorts of titles featured here – a massive run of music that runs from jazz to funk, American and European, totally obscure to completely common – presented beautifully together in this massive book! The volume doesn't just bring together Corbett's columns, but also offers up full color reproductions of all the record covers, along with a few other details too – to support efforts on dozens of artists – a huge list that includes Melvin Jackson, Bill Leslie, Black Grass, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Phil Seamen, Khan Jamal, Klaus Doldinger, The Mad-Hatters, Tommy Jones, Guy Warren, The Three Souls, United Front, Johnny Lytle, London Experimental Jazz Quartet, Paul Smoker, AK Salim, Noah Howard, Jack Wilson, and many others – a good number of whom have yet to be reissued. The book is wonderful – and Corbett's longtime declaration of being a vinyl freak is more important than ever, given the rebirth of the medium! Book is 250 pages, softcover, with color images. Book

Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little collection of autumn-themed tunes – and one that definitely lives up to the spirit of the Indian Summer in the title! By that, we mean that these songs are maybe more about the cycle of rebirth and new life that's triggered by fall – the shift away from the dog days of August to the new sort of life that's born in September – post-Holiday, back to work, and ready to face the world with a newly-charged sense of energy! These are sad tunes about falling leaves, but lively numbers that revel in all the new colors of the season – served up in a hip mix of vocal, rock, jazz, and pop modes from the end of the 50s and the start of the 60s – all given the best Bear Family spin. Titles include "It's Raining" by Irma Thomas, "Come September" by Bobby Darin, "Waiting For Fall" by Tab Hunter, "Stormy Weather" by Etta James, "In The Rain" by Ferrante & Teicher, "Windy & Warm" by Chet Atkins, "Wild Wind" by Don Duke, "Rain Rain Go Away" by Bobby Vinton, "Autumn In New York" by Bobby Christian, "Cotton Picker" by Eddie Cochran, "Corn Poem" by Bob Davie, and "Turkey Gobbler" by Nino Tempo.
