Tino ContrerasLa Noche De Los Dias ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2020. New Copy ... On October 23, 2020 (delayed)
A brilliant late statement from Tino Contreras – the legendary Mexican drummer who's been part of the jazz scene in Mexico City for decades – and who can still give the world wonderfully vibrant music like this! There's a deeply spiritual vibe to the record – a sound that's like some of Tino's most far-reaching work of the late 70s – and the group here features added percussion alongside piano, organ, saxes, and guitar – both acoustic and electric, which creates a great bridge in the sense of sound – as the music swirls together with a sense of majesty that almost recalls the best Latin America projects of Gato Barbieri on Impulse Records. All tunes are originals by Contreras, delivered with a fantastic spirit by the group – and titles include "Mascaras Blues", "Nina Yahel", "El Sacrificio", "Al Amanecer", and "Malinche". Ibrahim FerrerBuenos Hermanos (special edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
World Circuit/Nonesuch, 2003. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
The second album recorded by Cuban vocal legend Ibrahim Ferrer in the wake of the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon – and maybe the best! Ferrer's vocals are superb throughout – and the production is relatively stripped down, and never too intrusive – even when producer Ry Cooder is getting some time on the tracks on guitar. To our ears, the best musical element may be the bassist Cachaito – whose rock-solid lines ground everything perfectly – on titles that include "No Tiene Telarana", "Naufragio", "Fuiste Cruel", "Boquinene", "Boliviana", and "Hay Que Entrarle A Palos A Ese". This new version features fresh mastering by Ry Cooder, a shifted song order, and unreleased tracks that include "Ojos Malvados", "Me Voy Pa Sibanicu", "Mujer", and "Ven Conmigo Guajira". CD

Gianni MarchettiIl Magnifico Tony Carrera ... LP
CAM/Transversales Disques (France), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A great one from Gianni Marchetti – the Italian composer we know best for his work on The Wild Eye, but who sounds equally great on this set too! The best tracks have a heavy rhythm at the bottom – not really funky, but kind of mod, and a bit more off-kilter on the slower numbers – which makes for a really compelling sound, especially next to some of the set's unusual instrumental twists. A number of the tracks feature the vocal chorus 4+4, conducted by Nora Orlandi – and they sing in a sweet and moody style that nicely offsets the groovier work by Marchetti. Titles include "Psico Classico", "Amore In Controluce", and "Psico In Controluce" – done in a number of variations, including some which are previously unreleased! LP, Vinyl record album

SorcerersIn Search Of The Lost City Of The Monkey God ... CD
ATA (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
The Sorcerers return, and with a sound that's even deeper than before – a fantastic blend of funk and Ethiopian elements – but with a tightness that also resonates with some of the hipper European sound library work of the 70s! In fact, there's a mode here that's like those few special records where a funky sound library session might take on some more exotic currents – which is definitely what the Sorcerers do with a wicked blend of percussion and unusual woodwinds, which includes some work from Chip Wickham – who we also love from his own records too. Titles include "Overgrown Icons", "Downriver", "The People Of The Forest", "Crossing The Rope Bridge", "Summoning The Monkey God", "Who Is The Hunter Who Is The Prey", and "Escape From The Catacombs". Gabor SzaboSorcerer ... CD
Impulse, 1967. Used ... $7.99
A key moment in the career of Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo – a player who'd already been making some great music in the group of Chico Hamilton, but who really cemented his reputation with the sound on this set! Right from the start, Gabor was always a guitarist with something very new, very fresh to offer – an approach that was partly steeped in older European gypsy guitar sounds, but also inflected electrically towards a trippier, more modal, more psychedelic quality – something he'd explore strongly on this sweet little set. The album begins in a bossa mode, then really trips out – as a second guitar weaves lines around Gabor's own – and drums and bass provide a very cool modal groove. Titles include "Los Matodoros", "Corcovado", "O Barquinho", "The Beat Goes On", "Lou-ise", "Space", and "Mizrab". CD

✨✧ Gabor SzaboSorcerer/More Sorcery ... CD
Impulse, 1967. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
A pair of enhanting Impulse sets from '67 – Sorceror and More Sorcery – together in a single set! Sorcerer is one of the best albums ever by the great Eastern European guitarist, and a groovy set of spiralling jazz tracks, recorded live at The Jazz Workshop with a two-guitar frontline, and backing by a very tight rhythm combo. The sound is amazing, with lots of choppy modal grooves, and other longer tracks that have a vaguely mystical feel to them. Titles include "The Beat Goes On", "Space", "Mizrab", "O Barquinho", and "Lou-ise". More Sorcery is the great sort of a follow-up – and like that one, it features long tracks that have a spiralling modal feel that's much more serious, much more grooving, and a lot less campish than some of his other albums of the time. The two-guitar lineup mixes rhythm and melody – perfect for the tunes on the set, like "Los Matadoros", "Spellbinder", "Comin Back", and "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds". CD

Jackie Wilson with Count BasieManufacturers Of Soul (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Brunswick/Demon (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... About November 27, 2020
A really wonderful collaboration between two very unlikely partners – and a great album that really stands out as some of the best work from both artists in the 60s! Count Basie's group gets hard and soulful on the record – and even a little funky on the best cuts – and Jackie Wilson is in a raw bluesy vocal style that recalls the best moments of his earlier Brunswick singles – a great edge that makes the whole Basie groove sound even more hard-hitting than ever. Benny Carter arranged, but the groove is more a hard-edged Count Basie mode mixed with Brunswick soul styles – and Jackie blows it out over the top on great versions of "Funky Broadway", "Ode To Billie Joe", "I Was Made To Love Her", "Even When You Cry", and "Respect". Also features a version of "For Your Precious Love" that was a bit of a hit for the pair! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Clifford JordanAdventurer ... LP
Muse, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from Clifford Jordan – proof that the 70s were possibly the greatest decade for his music! Although most of Jordan's contemporaries from the big tenor days of the 50s really didn't grow much during the 70s, Clifford always continued to develop his style – adding in modes and tones that he'd never played before, working in an ever rich tapestry of jazz that makes just about any of his albums from the time a delight. Even this session – a simple quartet date recorded with Tommy Flanagan, Bill Lee, and Grady Tate – offers lots of wonderful moments, and is kind of a post-righteous 70s soul jazz album, filled with lots of warm tones and straight soulful playing that are almost a back to earth moment after his Strata East years – but still equally expressive. Titles include "He's A Hero", "No More", "Quasimodo", and "Adventurer". LP, Vinyl record album

Great work from a really unique singer – a vocalist who's equally well-balanced between jazz and soul, and who uses that balance to great advantage throughout this well-crafted LP! Brenda's vocals and inflection definitely show a strong side of the understanding of the nuances you'd use in jazz – but she also works in tunes that are more soul-based, although still with a nice degree of complexity – instrumentation that changes from track to track, and which has way more going on than just beats and keyboards too. Tracks include "Marrow", "Catch Me Falling", "The Core", "Little Prayer", "Flying Lessons", "Return To Sender", and "Your Light". CD

A cool little funky group – one that's so influenced by the sound library scene of the 70s, they even styled this album like one of those records from back in the day! The tunes are almost all instrumental – heavy on drums and funky basslines, and filled with guitar, organ, electric piano, and lots of other groovy touches – all with a very strong 70s vibe in the overall approach and production! Things are nice and simple – and these guys avoid some of the cliches of other groups who go for this territory, but maybe push too hard. Trojan/Antarctica Starts Here, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A stunning example of the way that the harmony trio had developed in late 60s Jamaica – a short but fantastic evolution of a mode that began in American soul, yet quickly expanded into something else entirely during the rocksteady years – to the point where it became the global calling card of a group like The Wailers! Yet despite the big fame of that group, there were many others working in Kingston who were equally wonderful – case in point is The Kingstonians, a wonderful trio with a very rich vibe – honed to perfection here with the production talents of Derrick Harriott, who makes the record as powerful a statement as any coming from the scene at the start of the 70s. This is the kind of music that should have been passed upwards along the same chain as Bob Marley, but which sadly never fully got its due – which makes it ripe for rediscovery, on titles that include "Hold Down", "Singer Man", "Sufferer", "Nice Nice", "Come We Go Moonwalk", "The Clip", "Rumble Rumble", and "Winey Winey". ✨✧ Betty LavetteNearer To You ... CD
Snapper (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic female soul – and an incredible collection of work from the young Betty Lavette – easily one of our favorite female soul singers of the time! The set brings together late 60s tracks recorded for the Calla and Silver Fox label – and as great as her later work might be, this is the stuff that will really blow you away – the real deal, right-on-the-money sort of tracks that made Betty a legend right from the get-go! Backings are often nicely funky, and production has that great gritty way of unlocking the full depth of Lavette's vocals without going for any easy soul cliches – a kind of purity that's really kept these tracks at the top of our stack over the years. The set features a great book-style cover, with notes on the music – and the CD also features a few duets with Hank Ballard, too! Titles include "He Made a Woman Out of Me", "Do Your Duty", "We Got to Slip Around", "Love's Made a Fool of Me", "Let's Go Let's Go Let's Go", "Hello Sunshine", "My Train's Coming In", "Nearer To You", and "I'm In Love". ✨✧ Hailu Mergia & Dahlak BandWede Harer Guzo ... LP
Awesome Tapes From Africa, 1978. New Copy 2 LPs (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Maybe the coolest music we've ever heard from Ethiopian keyboard legend Hailu Mergia – a late 70s session that has his organ lines sounding even groovier than ever, on some sweet tracks that also bring in a fair bit of funk to the grooves! The style is much more in an Ethiopiques vein than some of Mergia's later music – with his own floating keyboard lines wrapped nicely around bolder notes on trumpet and sax, and some additional electric piano too – all moving in this moody, soulful territory that's really wonderful! Most of the record is instrumental, but there's some occasional vocals too – more in a chorus mode that goes along with the grooves beautifully – on titles that include "Bati Bati", "Embuwa Bey Lamitu", "Wede Harer Guzo", "Minilbelsh", "Anchin Kifu Ayinkash", "Sintayehu", and "Yenenesh Wey". ✨✧ Ibrahim FerrerBuenos Hermanos (180 gram pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
World Circuit/Nonesuch, 2003. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ SorcerersIn Search Of The Lost City Of The Monkey God ... LP
ATA (UK), 2020. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
ATA (UK), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A contemporary record, but one we'd rank right up there with the moodiest, most exotic African funk albums of the 70s – especially the gems we've discovered through the Ethiopiques series! These guys play in a style that certainly references Ethiopian reeds and keyboard work of the 70s, but with a groove that's even funkier too – an understanding of the possibilities of a deep funk combo, but expressed through a much richer, more organic vibe – so that nothing's ever forced or faked at all, and the music is wonderfully captivating throughout. Production is perfect for this sort of set – and titles include "Pinch Of The Death Nerve", "Viking Of 5th Avenue", "Cave Of Brahma", "Night Of The Sorcerer", and "Suur Toll". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousKing Jammy's Dancehall Part 3 – Hard Dancehall Murderer 1985 to 1989 ... LP
Dub Store (Japan), Late 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Seminal sounds from King Jammy – a reggae maestro who really made his mark during the dancehall generation with work like this! The set's the third in this excellent series from Dub Store, but has all the freshness of the first two – a great testament to the never-ending genius that flowed from Jammy's tap at the time! Rhythms are laidback and midtempo – and production is digital, but still has plenty of warmth – even on the beats, which are woven beautifully into the more organic elements of the music – and given an especially strong spirit by the excellent vocalists. Titles include "The Ruler" by Gregory Isaacs, "Butter Bread" by Nitty Gritty, "Can't Ride Computer" by King Kong, "Musical Murder" by Banana Man, "Chain Robbery" by Johnny Osbourne, "Trouble Nobody" by Echo Minott, "Murderer" by Pad Anthony, "Mi Ah The Danger" by Admiral Bailey, "Midnight Hour" by Robert Lee & Bunny General, and "Ram Up Every Corner" by Tonto Irie. John Barry did the score for this dark British film starring Dame Edith Evans as an elderly woman slowly succumbing to the "whispers" of old age. The music is far different than Barry's Bond work, with more of a sophisticated orchestral sound – filled with dark brooding passages, occasionally punctuated by jazzier moments. This deluxe edition features additional dialogue from the film, a nice booklet, and an enhanced CD-rom that includes a film clip! Titles include "Are You There?", "Sticks & Stones", "Nobody & Nothing", and "Three Attackers". CD

✨✧ Nino FerrerNino Ferrer ... CD
Riviera/Polygram (France), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very groovy stuff from Nino Ferrer – France's answer to the 60s beat group scene that was shaking big in Britain and Germany! Ferrer has a style that's greatly influenced by American R&B singers, and he's backed by a tight little combo that has a hard Hammond and guitar sound that works very well with his shouted soulful vocals! You might know his work from the Get Easy compilation – and a lot of the material on this great 1966 album has a similar sound – hard vocals, swinging instrumentation, and a groovy soulful groove – easily some of the most upbeat romping work from the French pop scene of the 60s! Titles include "Les Cornichons", "Oh He Hein Bon", "Je Veux Etre Noir", "Mirza", "C'Est Irreparable", "Shake Shake Ferrer", and "Le Millionnaire". CD

✨✧ Nino FerrerRats & Rolls ... CD
Barclay/On Sale Music (Italy), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest albums we've ever heard from French funk legend Nino Ferrer – and that's saying a lot, given how much we love his records of the 60s! Nino first started out as one of the few continental cats whose energy could match that of the funkiest soul singers in the US at the time – working in a style that clearly drew from the UK mod interpretations of American soul, but with instrumentation that was even sharper than most of those singers and groups – often more directly influenced by the James Brown Band of the late 60s! Yet here, he takes that approach even further – and soars out with grooves that have a more sophisticated flow and a really great vibe, all while still holding onto the best core currents from before – vocals that take all these great twists and turns, and organ lines that flow far past regular rhythms and really illuminate the songs in a unique way. Titles include "Play Boy Scout", "Reminiscenza", "Meglio L'Amore Che La Guerra", "La Pella Nera", "Povero CRisto", "O Mangi Questa Minestra O Salti Dalla Finestra", and "Fratelli E Cosi'Sia". CD

✨✧ Jimetta RoseLight Bearer ... LP
Temporary Whatever, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
LA underground soul from Jimetta Rose – tripped out and intimately soulful at the same time, really a unique vibe, even coming from a scene as progressive of a jazzy hip hop soul scene as creatively unfettered as independent west coast's this far into the new millennium – and produced by kindred spirit Georgia Anne Muldrow. Something about the way the bass rumbles and the beats thump give a hypnotic vibe, with some nice swirling keys and other touches, but it's Jimetta's voice that carries the vibe. Warm and wonderful stuff. Includes "Rhythm Of Life", "Skyscrapers", "Master Of Disguise", "Stargazing", Catch A Vibe", "Surrounded By Company", "Emerald City" and "Welcome To The World". Two excellent vocal albums that Louis cut for Verve – some of the best of his career, and both graced with amazing arrangements by Russ Garcia! The sound's a lot purer than some of the pop vocal albums that Louis cut for other labels, like Decca – and he both sings and plays trumpet on tracks like "When Your Lover Has Gone", "We'll Be Together Again", "You Turned The Tables On Me", "I've Got The World On A String", "Top Hat White Tie & Tails", "Home", "East Of The Sun", "Stormy Weather", and "Have You Met Miss Jones". Ataraxia (Mort Garson)Unexplained – Electronic Musical Impressions of the Occult (orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
RCA/Sacred Bones, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... On November 6, 2020
One of the spookiest albums we've ever heard from moog maestro Mort Garson – way darker and more complex than his Wozzard Of Id or moogy horoscope projects – with a feel that's much more like his legendary Black Mass album! Like that one, there's a fair current of supernatural running through the mix – an early use of the electronics to explore the darker corners of reality, served up with lots of cool 70s occult touches – in a way that's oddly more timeless than some of the later projects of this nature from the industrial generation. Garson's range of tones is wonderful – from fuzzy bassy bits, to sparkling keyboard lines, to lots of spacey sounds in between – and titles include "I Ching", "Tarot", "Deja Vu", "Seance", "Sorcerer", and "Astral Projection". Sigia (Brazil), 1986. Used ... $9.99
Smooth soulful work from Jorge – not as funky as his 70s albums, but still a great little record! The album's got a nicely compressed take on his samba soul sound, done in an 80s groove mode, which means that there's more keyboards and electric percussion than before, but still an adherence to strong vocals and choppy rhythms. And sure, it's not as great as his classic work, but the album's still pretty darn great – and if it was the first album by a new artist, the critics would be all over it! Titles include "Sasaci Perere", "Pancada De Amor", "Danca Que Isso E", "Procura Se Uma No", "Roberto Corta Ess", and "O Amante Vigilant". CD

TK BlueLatinbird ... CD
Motema, 2011. Used ... $4.99
Latin Bird, but way more Latin than Bird ever was – if that makes any sense! In other words, TK Blue really steps out nicely with this album – doing way more than just a Charlie Parker tribute, and certainly not rehashing the cubop elements of Bird's early 50s sides – and instead, taking the whole thing into the rich colors and joyous rhythms of the contemporary Latin jazz scene – far more involved and complicated than the old days! The album's got a lot more to offer than you might expect – a soulful acoustic vibe that's mighty nice – not just from TK's work on alto and flute, but from piano by Theo Hill, percussion by Willie Martinez and Roland Guerrero, guest trombone from Steve Turre, and even a bit of drums from Lewis Nash. Titles include "Chi Chi", "Si Si", "Blue Bird", "Visa", "Buzzy", "He Flew Away Too Soon", and "Moods Of Parker". CD

David BowieLow (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RCA, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
The Thin White Duke turns to the east – and gets a whole new sound with help from Brian Eno! The album is an amazing departure from some of David Bowie's previous work – a set that's sparer, more spacious, and which is often instrumental – quite a statement, given Bowie's reputation as a songwriter at the time! It's almost like Bowie's shaking off all the confused stardom of the previous parts of the 70s – and is stepping forward as a new being from a new space – cleaner, leaner, and simpler than before – but hardly evacuated of soul at all, certainly not as much as you might guess from the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. Titles include "Speed Of Life", "Be My Wife", "A New Career In A New Town", "Warsawza", "Art Decade", "Weeping Wall", and "Sound & Vision". LP, Vinyl record album

Brownout Presents – Brown SabbathBrown Sabbath 2 ... LP
Ubiquity, 2016. New Copy ... $13.99 19.98
A sweet return to Brown Sabbath territory – that wicked blend of deep funk rhythms and fuzzy guitar, served up by the Brownout collective! The groove has some of the Latin elements that you'd know from Adrian Quesada's other work – but the rising guitar lines dominate a lot more – as do the horns, which crest nicely above the music, to ensure that there's a bit more soul here than on the original Black Sabbath versions of the songs! Yet the vocals by Alex Marrero are also sometimes right in Ozzy territory – which brings things back to base a bit – making for one of the most unusual takes on the music of Black Sabbath you'll ever hope to hear. Titles include "Fairies Wear Boots", "Snowblind", "Supernaut", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Sweet Leaf", "Electric Funeral", and "Children Of The Grave". LP, Vinyl record album

Terry CallierOccasional Rain ... CD
Cadet, 1972. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
Terry Callier's first album for Cadet – and the kickoff of one of the greatest three album runs that any soul artist ever recorded! This one's got a different feel than the later two, as it takes songs by Terry, and structures them with these little musical "seque" tracks in between every song, done in a sparer folksy style that recalls Terry's roots in the Old Town scene in Chicago. At the time, Terry was making the transition from folk artist to soul singer – and he'd been picked up by Jerry Butler and The Dells as a promising young songwriter, one of the best talents of the second generation of Chicago soul stars. The record's a stripped-down affair that features a small group with Charles Stepney on harpsichord and organ, Callier on guitar, and backing vocals by Minnie Riperton, Shirley Wahls, and Kitty Haywood. The album kicks off with Terry's great little pop ditty "Ordinary Joe" – probably the catchiest song he ever wrote – then rolls into more somber titles like "Occasional Rain", "Do You Finally Need A Friend", "Golden Circle", and "Blues For Marcus". A totally unique album – and a prime example of the genius that was coming out of Chicago at the time! CD
