LA BoppersBop Time! ... CD
Mercury/PTG (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
One of the later, post-Fantasy albums by the LA Boppers – a great one for Mercury! Bop Time has some of their nice smooth two step harmony vocals set amidst jazz-tinged arrangements – with plenty of funk in the mix, too – especially in those killer basslines! Augie Johnson produced for At Home productions, so the jazzy moments blend nicely with the dancefloor funky soul. Tracks include "You're On My Mind", "If It Is That Way", "Dreamer", and "You're No. 1". Also features a very tasty remake of "La La Means I Love You"! CD

✨✧ VariousKing Vocal Groups Vol 1 – Ooh Bop Sha Boo ... CD
King/Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ace Records socks another one out of the park – by serving up a wealth of under-exposed doo wop and group soul gems from the deep catalogues of King Records! In case you didn't know, King Records – with its subsidiaries like Federal and Deluxe – was one of the coolest labels for soulful styles in the 50s and 60s – the original home to James Brown, but a much bigger powerhouse, with a strong ear to the group for the best up-and-coming talent! And while King's got a huge reputation for solo singers in the fields of blues, soul, and R&B – the label seemed to also have an especially great ear for vocal groups – which it often recorded with a bit more edge than some of the labels on the east coast. This set is a great testament to that talent – as it's filled with rare singles from groups who include the pre-Motown Temptations, The Guytones, The Federals, The Pyramids, The Chanters, The Tenderfoots, The Strangers, The Hurricanes and tons of others! The styles run from sly, romantic doo wop harmony – to hard-driving sock soul – and there's also some nice currents of deepness in the vocal approach. The set's got the usual stellar Ace presentation – great sound and copious notes – and 24 titles that include "Ooh Bop Sha Boo" by The Guytones, "Come Go With Me" by Federals, "Deep In My Heart For You", I Need Your Tenderness" by The Chanters, "My Angel" by The Californians, "Who Knows You Do" by The Swallows, "The Story Of My Heart", by The Mascots, "Blue Flowers" by The Swallows, "Ask Me" by Kenny Martin, "Roach's Rock" by The Temptations, and "Tell Me That You're Mine" by The Five Jets. ✨✧ Rob Agerbeek/Ruud Brink QuartetPardon My Bop ... CD
Blue Jack Jazz (Netherlands), 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sharp-edged work from a cool Dutch combo – one co-led by pianist Rob Agerbeek and saxophonist Ruud Brink – both great players, even if they're not well known over here in the US! Agerbeek's got years of jazz work under his belt by the time of this set – and he plays with a sound that's quickly imaginative to live up to the bop title, but also has a warmer, more sensitive approach too – one that unfolds beautifully as the album rolls on, and makes it much more than just a bop-revival affair. Brink's great too – and mostly plays tenor with a raspy, soulful tone – but also plays a bit of clarinet, and even sings a bit on two tracks too. Remaining quartet members include Harry Emmery on bass and Jo Krause on drums – and titles include "Pardon My Bop", "It's You Or No One", "I Can't Get Started", "Four", and "The Red Door". CD

Rare early work as a leader from Hank Jones – a solo showcase produced by Norman Granz during his years with Mercury! Jones is working solo throughout – really getting a chance to stretch out and try new ideas – in ways that have him balancing between sweeter sounds and some sharper modern moments that seem to come in and stir things up, but often in very subtle ways. Titles include "Blues For Lady Day", "Tea For Two", "You're Blase", and "Blue Room". LP, Vinyl record album

Lillian BriggsJuke Box Pearls – Diddy Boppers ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Mid 1950s. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
Very cool work from Lillian Briggs – a less-remembered singer from the 50s, and one whose music here is a key bridge between earlier forms and the start of rock and roll! Briggs was as much an instrumentalist as she was a singer – playing trombone and leading her own group at times too – and she's got an approach that's like a few of her key contemporaries that lean heavily into modes used by R&B singers at the time, which comes off with a surprisingly strong groove, and a style that mixes jazzy instrumentation with some really romping rhythms – all to set fire on tunes that include "Is There A Man In The House", "I'm Burning For You", "Don't Stay Away Too Long", "Come Here", "She Sells Seashells", "That's The Only Way To Live", "Rock N Rolly Poly Santa Claus", "Come Here", "Hey Ba Ba Re Bop", "I Care For You", and "Not A Soul". We're not entirely certain of the origin of these recordings, but they are at least contemporaneous with the Savoy sides Miles was cutting with Bird, and according to the notes, feature Charlie Parker, Lucky Thompson, Duke Jordan, Max Roach and others. 10 tracks in all: "Out Of Nowhere", "A Night In Tunisia", "Yardbird Suite", "Ornithology", "Moose The Mooch", "Embraceable You", "Bird Of Paradise", "My Old Flame", "Don't Blame Me" and "Scrapple From The Apple". ✨✧ Lou DonaldsonNatural Soul (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1962. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A pivotal record from Lou Donaldson – one that has him forging out some of his first funky soul jazz sounds, moving from his bop roots, and working with a hip young group that includes Grant Green and John Patton, both of whom he discovered and brought to Blue Note (thanks Lou!) The tracks have a tight jaunty feel – very much like those on Patton's mid 60s sides for Blue Note, with lots of room for each player to solo intently – but still a strong focus on the overall groove of the ensemble. Cover's very nice – and tracks include "Funky Mama", "Spaceman Twist", and "Nice n Greasy". CD features one bonus track too – "People Will Say We're In Love". CD

Enja (Germany), 1989. Used ... $1.99
Later live work from Dizzy Gillespie – working in London here with a very hip ensemble! We're not entirely sure of the date, but given the skinny ties on a few of the players, we're guessing it's from that 80s stretch when Dizzy was still going strong – working in a great mix of Latin and bop modes that's always kept fresh through his creative energies! Slide Hampton's on trombone – and also wrote most of the arrangements – and other players include Arturo Sandoval on trumpet, Paquito D'Rivera on reeds, James Moody on sax and flute, Airto on percussion, and Danilo Perez on vocals – and Flora Purim also joins the group on vocals for a few numbers. Titles include "Kush", "Tanga", "Dizzy Shells", "Night In Tunisia", "Tin Tin Deo", "Seresta", and "Samba For Carmen". CD

James Moody with Kenny BarronFly Me To The Moon (Comin' On Strong/Another Bag) ... CD
Cadet/Lonehill (Spain), 1962/1963. Used ... $6.99 9.99
Two tremendous early 60s sessions from James Moody – both recorded for Argo Records, and both featuring a young Kenny Barron on piano! First up is Comin On Strong – a prime Argo gem from James Moody – and key proof that when he wanted to, he could be one of the hippest cats working in 60s jazz! The approach here is subtle, but amazing – a blend of hardbop with some of the more modern ideas that were coming up in the post-bop generation from the team of Moody and Dizzy Gillespie. The rhythms are quite complicated at times – very fresh and vibrant, but without any of the easy gimmicks that other 60s artists would fall into – like vamping soul jazz or borrowed bossa lines. Instead, working in a combo with a young Kenny Barron, Moody concentrates on fresh timings and complicated changes – modes that push his own work on alto, tenor, and flute far from expected territory – and which also features Barron on piano and organ, George Eskridge on guitar, Chris White on bass, and Rudy Collins on drums. Tracks include "Zanzibar", "Dizzy", "Ole", "Sonnymoon For Two", and a nice version of "Fly Me To The Moon". Another Bag is hip, angular, post-bop material from James Moody – the kind of album that made him one of the key soul jazz innovators of the 60s! The session's one of Moody's excellent outings with arranger Tom McIntosh – a young talent who helped re-shape Moody's musical vision with his deeply colorful arrangements – penned here for a smallish group, but still breaking out with deeper tones than Moody had ever expressed before on record! Tunes are a wonderful mix of modal, soul jazz, and more introspective tunes – played by James on both flute and tenor, alongside hip players that include Kenny Barron on piano, Paul Serrano on trumpet, Marshall Thompson on drums, Ernest Outlaw on bass, and John Avant on trombone. Titles include some excellent McIntosh originals – like "The Cup Bearers", "The Day After", "Minuet In G", and "Ally" – plus equally-fresh tunes "Spastic" and "Pleyel D'Jaime". CD

4CDs worth of Charlie Parker's recordings for the Savoy label – done between the years 1944-1948, with some of the best talents in the bop business! The set's got an overwhelming amount of alternate takes – perhaps a bit too many, but if you're the kind of Bird-o-phile who digs that sort of thing, you've got plenty of alternate solos to choose from here. At last count, there appeared to be about 115 tracks on the set – and titles include "Chasin The Bird", "Billie's Bounce", "Romance Without Finance", "Perhaps", and "Parker's Mood". CD

Some of the last recordings we've ever seen from bop legend Bud Powell – a mix of solo and trio material that still shows the pianist bursting with imagination! The origin of the tracks is a bit obscure – they're listed on the original album as "compiled by Experience Group Ltd" – and Powell's also working with an unknown bassist and drummer, so there's not much we can tell you about the details of the recording – but as usual, Bud speaks volumes on the piano, which hardly needs much in the way of words from us! ✨✧ Ike QuebecBlue Harlem – A Proper Introduction To Ike Quebec ... CD
Proper (UK), Mid 40s. Used ... $4.99
Although most of the world knows Ike Quebec these days for his "comeback" recordings with Blue Note in the early 60s, back in the 40s, he recorded some totally smoking sides for the label that show him playing in a much younger, gutsier vein – nicely shifting between the camps of bop and swing, as a fierce young tenor master. Those recordings, all originally issued on 78s, have all been tough to find – and now they're paired nicely with a great set of recordings that Quebec did for the Savoy label around the same time. Both sets are excellent material by one of the most woefully overlooked tenorists of the 20th century, and this set features great remastering, and probably the best packaging we've ever seen for the material. There's a total of 22 cuts in all – with a number of unreleased ones – and titles include "Zig Billion", "IQ Blues", "Jim Dawgs", "Facin The Face", "Tiny Exercise", and "Hard Tack". CD

✨✧ RamonesIt's Alive ... LP
Sire, 1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
Prime live material from the Ramones – recorded on the final night of 1977, right when the group was at the height of their power! If you ever got a chance to see The Ramones back in the day, the sound was really amazing – every bit as short, sharp, and focused as the studio records – but even more so, as the group would work through their set list with razor-sharp intensity, almost this juggernaut of punk rock sound that never lets up from start to finish! That quality is definitely in place here, as the whole thing tears through an incredible set list that includes "California Sun", "Rockaway Beach", "Teenage Lobotomy", "I Wanna Be A Good Boy", "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker", "Suzy Is A Headbanger", "I Don't Care", "Havana Affair", "We're A Happy Family", "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue", "Let's Dance", "Chainsaw", "Do You Wanna Dance", "You're Gonna Kill That Girl", "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment", "Glad To See You Go", and "Blitzkrieg Bop". ✨✧ Martial SolalMartial Solal Trio Vol 2 ... LP
Vogue/Swing (Japan), Mid 1950s. Near Mint- ... $23.99
One of the first 10" albums by groundbreaking pianist Martial Solal! By the end of the 60s, Solal had emerged as one of the more avant pianists on the French scene – but here, in the early days of his career, he's a very committed bop musician – and one who was able to link the virtuoso styles of the concert hall scene with the looser swing and improvisation of jazz. Solal has an incredible dexterity on the keys here – but never overstates himself, and instead keeps things in a soulful swing with the help of players who include Jean Marie Ingrand and Joe Benjamin on bass – and Roy Haynes and Jean-Louis Viale on drums. Titles include "Midi 1/4", "Signal", "You're Not The Kind Of Boy", and "Just One Of Those Things". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ George BraithComplete Blue Note Sessions (Two Souls In One/Soul Stream/Extension) ... CD
Blue Note, Mid 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A long-overdue reissue of work by one of our favorite sax players ever! George Braith recorded these three albums for Blue Note during the mid 60s – and they're incredibly conceived soul jazz sessions that mix together a Roland Kirk-ish penchant for strange reed experimentation (Braith played stritch and soprano sax, in addition to alto and tenor), with a tight sense of an organ jazz groove. The personnel on the albums features Grant Green on guitar and the great Billy Gardner on organ, a player who mostly used piano, but who was talked into taking up the organ by Braith – and with great results! Think of these albums as being right up there with Green's best work for Blue Note – with the extra bonus of some slightly off-kilter sax playing to really make things fresh. Titles include "Boop Bop Bing Bash", "Home Street", "Braith-a-way", "Nut City", "Extension", "Soul Stream", "Jo Anne", and "Ethlyn's Love". CD

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieCloser To The Source ... LP
Atlantic, 1984. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A later and lesser-known set from Dizzy Gillespie – and a real departure both from his bop of the 40s and his funk of the 70s! The album's got Dizzy working in a more modern soul-influenced setting – blowing over larger electric-tinged backings arranged by Kenny Kirkland, Marcus Miller, and Barry Eastmond – almost in a format that's a bit like some of Freddie Hubbard's R&B-styled albums of the time. Gillespie's always up for the challenges of any sort of session, and more than holds his own in the format – but the overall credit for the groove is less focused on his solo work, than it is the smoothly soulful style of the backings. The album includes a great cover of Leroy Hutson's "Closer To The Source" – complete with a sweet female lead vocal – plus other jazz versions of R&B material, like "It's Time For Love", "You're Number 1 In My Book", and "Textures". The brilliant full length debut of Kings Go Forth – a set we'd been eagerly anticipating after hearing their first few fantastic singles! The group hail from Milwaukee, an unlikely spot for a combo this hip – and they've got a sound that's smoking 70s soul all the way through – not just the deep funk you might hear from other groups working today, but a deeper soul spectrum that brings in bits of Curtom, New Jersey soul, Philly Northern, and a handful of other great 70s soul moments we totally love! As longtime fans of classic soul, we're pretty picky about the contemporary stuff that we rate – so take it from us, when we give these guys a 10 out of 10, we definitely mean it – and they've definitely done what it takes to earn our respect with a record like this. Vocals are wonderful – harmonized like some group soul 45 on most of the best cuts – and titles include "Fight With Love", "You're The One", "I Don't Love You No More", "One Day", "Paradise Lost", "Don't Take My Shadow", and "1000 Songs". Prestige/OJC, Early 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Genius work from Moody – and a larger session than usual – one that shows his strong talents with an expanded lineup! Moody's working here with players that have a definite Dizzy Gillespie Big Band bent – including trumpeter Dave Burns, trombonist William Shepherd, baritonist Pee Wee Moore, and pianist Jimmy Boyd – but they're working with Moody in a groove that's got equal parts modern alongside the bop, in a way that makes for some complicated arrangements that bristle with electricity. There's almost a bit of Gigi Gryce or Benny Golson in the spirit of the set – and Moody's work on alto is an especially good example of this on the record. Eddie Jefferson makes a great vocal appearance on "Disappointed" – and other tracks include "Little Ricky", "Big Ben", "Show Eyes", "Hard To Get", and "And You Called My Name". CD

Both albums were only ever issued on rare 10" LPs during the mid 50s, and they're combined here with great sound, great notes, and two bonus tracks. One session features Gordon on trumpet, Gigi Gryce on alto, and Walter Bishop on piano; the other features Gordon, Charlie Rouse, and Junior Mance – and Blakey is on drums throughout. ✨✧ James MoodyMoods (aka Running The Gamut) ... LP
Up Front, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A mindblowing album from James Moody – of the sort that opens up a whole new facet of his career! The record takes off from Moody's early 60s work for Chess – his post-bop recordings that started displaying a deeper side of his musical consciousness – and which occasionally featured work by composer/arranger Tom McIntosh. McIntosh's presence is felt very strongly here – as he produced the whole session, and contributed a few tracks – working in the Nola Penthouse studios at a level of hipness we never would have expected! Moody plays tenor, alto, and flute – working with a really great group that includes Patti brown on piano, Albert Heath on drums, Reggie Workman on bass, and Thad Jones on trumpet – and the scope of the work is far beyond anything you'd expect! The record's got a stunning early funk track by Edward Bland – "If You Grin You're In", which features a tripped-out organ line mostly just holding one note – while drums pound hard, and Moody blows it over the top – all set to this flattened production that makes the whole thing sound really eerie! Other great tracks include the loping groover "Capers", the wonderfully moody flute number "Wayward Plaint" (written by Dennis Sandole, of the oft-overlooked Sandole Brothers), and the tracks "Em Prean Shore" and "Buster's Last Stand". Tremendous throughout – and completely essential, whether you already like Moody or not! LP, Vinyl record album

Brenda/Luaka Bop, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A lost gospel treasure from this obscure Mississippi group – cut in the mid 70s, but with a stripped-down sound that's completely timeless overall! The Staples Jr Singers certainly have picked up some of the more righteous currents of mainstream soul and funk at the time – echoed both in their tremendous phrasing on the lyrics, and on some of the album's used of raw guitar licks next to their words – but the stripped-down vibe gives the record a feel that's almost more 60s deep soul overall – as befits their southern roots, and the album's issue on a small indie label! There's also maybe a bit less "church" on the record than the usual gospel outing of the time – more overall messages about love, unity, and feeling – which also gives the whole thing a very transcendent quality. Titles include "On My Journey Home", "When Do We Get Paid", "I'm Looking For A Man", "I Know You're Going To Miss Me", "Trouble Of The World", "I Got A New Home", and "I Feel Good". ✨✧ Sonny StittTune-Up/Constellation – Endgame Brilliance ... CD
Cobblestone/32 Jazz, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Early 70s magic from Sonny Stitt – two albums recorded in 1972 for the Cobblestone label! First up is Tune Up – a great one from Stitt's post-Prestige years, and a real back-to-basics effort that recalls the genius of his work on Roost! The format is straight and simple – Stitt's tenor and alto fronting a quartet that includes Barry Harris, Sam Jones, and Alan Dawson – all playing in a way that puts Sonny in command on all tracks, blowing with an amazing tone that makes us want to throw away all his funk, organ, and electric outings, and just concentrate on these straight acoustic sides. Stitt has a way of blowing the reed like he's got his whole mouth moving into the sax – an earthy, human, and personal feel that first came out strongly in his work during the late 50s, but which has grown even more by this point – even if you couldn't hear the development on other sets. And given our love of funk and electric sides, we're honestly surprised we find ourselves championing a record like this from the early 70s – but it's a great one, and not to be missed if you remotely dig Stitt! Titles include "Tune Up", "Idaho", "Just Friends", "Groovin High", and "Blues For Prez & Bird". Constellation is all bop and all soul all the way through, and recorded with a tight quartet that features Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums! The style's a bit like Sonny's work of the late 50s, but there's also a fluidity to the rhythm section that makes it a bit different too – a sound that's warm, open, and soulful – creating a space into which Stitt settles nicely and blows like mad. There's no gimmicks at all, just solid classic jazz skills – and titles include "Casbah", "Constellation", "By Accident", "Webb City", and "Topsy". CD

Tracks stream along with an amazing ease – and Jackie's perfectly-placed solos are right on the money every time! The set list includes a lot of standards, but they're done with that warm soulful approach that makes you hardly care about the source of the material – and instead focus on Jackie's amazing talents as an improviser! A deep deep dig into the vaults of King/Federal Records – initial home to James Brown and a host of other R&B acts in the 50s – lots of whom are featured here! The collection includes many tracks never reissued before – all hand-picked by vintage 45 expert Mr Fine Wine, and laid out at a level that's both fresher than most King Records collections – and most of the 50s R&B sets we know as well! Fine Wine comes at the project almost with a "roots of funk" approach – which means that there's loads of unusual rhythms, weird cultural hybrids, and raw pre-soul vocals over the top – a killer range of cuts that include "Space Guitar" by Young John Watson, "Bossa Nova & Grits" by Little Joe Washington, "The Way You Do" by Jimmy Nolen, "Good Mambo Tonight" by Wynonie Harris, "Somewhere Down The Line" by Little Jimmy Scott, "You Can't Hide" by Lula Reed & Freddie King, "Back On The Block" by Sam Anderson & The Telstars, "Same Old Thing" by Amos Milburn, "You're Lower Than A Mole" by Camille Howard, "Be Bop Wino" by The Lamplighters, "Cherry Wine" by Little Esther, and "Stop Knockin" by Juanita Nixon. Brilliant early work by Miles Davis – some of his first truly important sessions to appear under his own name – originally issued as singles or 10" LP recordings by Blue Note, and brought together here in a full length set that would help to define the early years of his career! This is work before Miles was able to stretch out on longer sessions for Prestige, but the material already showcases his unique contribution to jazz – shorter tracks that are perhaps more boppish, than you might expect from some of Miles' other 50s work – but in a way that still allows for many moments of lyrical beauty, and that brilliantly cool sound of his which forever changed the sound of jazz trumpet. Quite an unusual Lou Donaldson album for Blue Note – much more open-ended than his other sets, with a really hard-jamming sort of sound! Unlike some of Donaldson's tighter dates of the time, which feature more bop-based, song-based shorter tunes – this one's more of a long-form blowing session, much more of the date you'd expect to hear from Prestige in the late 50s – and a bit like some of the work that Lou did on some of Jimmy Smith's all-star blowing dates from the same time. The group's a great one – a sextet with Donaldson on alto, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Sonny Clark on piano, Jamil Nasser on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – the last of whom is very much at home in the setting, and does a great job of directing the energy of the group. A great set from Patrice Rushen – very different than her later R&B work from the 80s! The record's her first, and at the time, Patrice was much more of a jazz artist – working here with a cool west coast set of players (Joe Henderson on tenor, Hadley Caliman on alto and soprano, and Oscar Brashear on trumpet), playing a range of keyboards, from acoustic and electric piano, to ARP, and clavinet. The tracks are long, and have a wonderfully composed soul jazz vibe – feeling a heck of a lot like work on labels like Strata East, deeply dipping into a soulful bag that's solid and real, with no fakery or tricks to make the mood happen. The best cuts are the covers – Joe Henderson's "Isotope" and Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa" – both of which are straighter than the rest of the tracks on the album, with a bit more focus – although other titles are still pretty nice, and include "Infinite" and "Cortly". Steeplechase (Denmark), 2024. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A set that's way more than the bop reference in the title might imply – as Chris Byars offers up this really unique interweaving of horns – instruments that swing and solo with a bebop inspiration, but with a complexity that also echoes an older west coast modern sound too! Byars blows tenor, next to Zaid Nasser on alto, Stefano Doglioni on bass clarinet, and John Mosca on trombone – players who work with no piano, just the bass of Ari Roland and drums of Keith Balla for rhythm – an open space that allows for even more interplay from the horns. Titles include "Bopthamology", "Clementsy", "Emily Reno", "Times Square Lights", "Ekat", and "Endure & Remain". CD

✨✧ Art Farmer & Donald ByrdTrumpets All Out (Two Trumpets/Three Trumpets) ... LP
Prestige, Late 50s. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
Great later issue of two classic Prestige hardbop albums from the 50s! First up is Two Trumpets – one of those wonderful late 50s Prestige Records blowing sessions that really let individual players have lots of the right sort of space to find their own voice alongside each other! Byrd and Farmer are both young here, and mighty sharp in their sounds – already quite distinct from each other in phrasing, and a great choice as soloists to illuminate in a setting like this. The rest of the group features Jackie McLean on alto – getting in some great solos too – plus Barry Harris on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and the great Art Taylor on drums. Byrd's bite is a great counterpart to the lyricism of Farmer – and titles include "Contour", "Round Midnight", "The Third", and "Dig". Next is Three Trumpets – an excellent follow-up to the legendary Two Trumpets session on Prestige – and even rarer than that one! The lineup features Farmer, Byrd, and Idrees Sulieman on the horns in the title – with hip rhythm from Hod O'Brien on piano, Addison Farmer on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums. Titles include "Diffusion Of Beauty", "You Gotta Dig It To Dig It", "Who's Who", and "Palm Court Alley". LP, Vinyl record album

Grant GreenAm I Blue (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1963. New Copy ... $17.99 21.99
One of the mellowest albums ever cut by Blue Note guitar legend Grant Green – a haunting set of intimate ballads and blues, played with a quintet that includes John Patton on organ, Joe Henderson on tenor, and Johnny Coles on trumpet – a lineup that makes for a very different set than usual for Green! Henderson and Coles give the album a change in flavor from the usual Grant Green soul bop session, especially the mellower ones – as they play with a slightly moody edge, which also seems to affect the way that Grant's handling the guitar as well – so that the album's laidback, but also has this very distinct undercurrent as well. Titles include "For All We Know", "Am I Blue", and "I Wanna Be Loved". CD

Roland KirkIntroducing Roland Kirk (UHQCD pressing) ... CD
Chess/Universal (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Despite the fact that the title's "Introducing Roland Kirk", it's not actually Kirk's first album – but it is a heck of a smoker with a very unusual sound! The session features Roland with a Chicago group that includes Ira Sullivan on trumpet, Don Garrett on bass, and Ron Burton on both piano and organ – the latter of which gives Kirk's playing a very different feel than usual – a bit more soul jazz and gutbuckety than on the later Mercury recordings. In fact, given Roland's use of many different reed instruments (tenor, manzello, stritch, and whistle – all often played at the same time!) – there's almost a Yusef Lateef quality to the album, at last in the style of some of Lateef's more hardbop sides for Prestige at the time. Kirk's tone, as always, is amazing – with that really spacious feel he gets from playing more than one horn at once! Titles include some great originals, like "The Call", "Soul Station", and "Spirit Girl" – plus "Our Waltz" and "Jack The Ripper". CD

Prestige/Craft, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
The title says it all – as Yusef Lateef works here in that wonderful mixture of hardbop, soul jazz, and Eastern stylings that he brought to all of his best early sessions as a leader! Lateef himself is playing tenor, flute, and oboe – which he uses to craft these eerie snakecharmer lines that work perfectly with the modal grooves of the tracks – very unusual rhythms for the time, and a real precursor to some of the world jazz experiments to come from overseas. The rest of the group features pianist Barry Harris, drummer Lex Humphries, and bassist Ernie Farrow, who also plays a strange instrument called a rabat – which further adds to the charm of the record. Titles include "Plum Blossom", "Purple Flower", "Three Faces Of Balal", and "Chinq Miau". LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley TurrentineUp At Minton's Vol 1 ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1961. Used ... $14.99 18.99
A fantastic early record from tenor giant Stanley Turrentine – a set that's completely hard-hitting, and which has a very different vibe than the sweeter sets he'd cut later in the 70s! Instead, this record is pure hardbop all the way through – with Turrentine matching labelmate Hank Mobley for depth of tone and freshness of ideas – stretching out on these long, live tracks with a very cool combo that also features Grant Green on guitar and Horace Parlan on piano – both of whom are superb, and hit some real Blue Note heights on the set. Parlan brings this sinister edge to some of the best tunes, and Green's guitar rings out with these fantastically soulful chromes – providing a great balance to the deep runs that Stanley takes on the tenor. Titles on this first volume include a long moody reading of "Yesterdays", plus the hard bop original "Stanley's Time", and the cuts "Broadway" and "But Not For Me". CD

VariousRing The Bells & Sing – The Progressive Sounds Of 1975 (4CD set) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), 1975. New Copy 4CDs ... $34.99 42.99
Mid 70s magic from the UK progressive rock scene – cuts from a moment when many of the groups were changing things up a bit – not in a commercial way, but in a mode that has them taking the energy of earlier jams and focusing them a bit more into tuneful music! The approach is a great one – and we really love these years when the prog acts were trying to stay vibrant and important, as older artists are joined by younger ones – and the music really takes off in all these new and unexpected directions! The package isn't overplayed classic rock – and instead, it serves up some great overlooked cuts from the year before punk – all with lavish notes that strongly support the excellent choices in the 47 tracks within – music by Van Der Graaf Generator, Caravan, Steve Hackett, Wigwam, Hatfield & The North, Soft Machine, Global Village Trucking Company, Clive John Greenslade, String Driven Thing, Man, Nektar, Fruup, Manfred Mann's Earthband, Chris Squire, PFM, Bebop Deluxe, Kestrel, Hawkwind, Gentle Giant, and others. About as classic as you can get for the Brown/Roach group – recorded at Basin Street with a group that includes Richie Powell on piano, Sonny Rollins on tenor, and George Morrow on bass. Tracks are tight and in that firey hardbop mode the pair pioneered – and titles include "Gertrude's Bounce", "Powell's Prances", "Time", "The Scene Is Clean", and "I'll Remember April". Most notable is the work by Powell on the record – as Bud's brother really shines here, turning out some great original compositions, and arranging the group with tight precision! Pacific Jazz, 1956. Used ... $3.99
Excellent work – and believe it or not, a great big band album led by Chet Baker! Although Chet's mostly best known for his work in small groups, he's really shining here as the leader of a large ensemble that includes a mix of "cool" west coast players on horns – Bud Shank, Bill Perkins, Conte Candoli, and others – plus more hard bop-oriented players on rhythm – Lawrence Marable, Jimmy Bond, and the great Bobby Timmons – making a surprise appearance on piano! The combination makes for a real monster of an album – crackling with energy all the way through, and featuring some of Baker's hardest solos on wax! Tracks include "A Foggy Day", "Mythe", "Phil's Blues", and "Tenderly". CD

Art Blakey/Modern Jazz QuartetArt Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk/Blues At Carnegie Hall ... CD
Collectables, 1958/1967. Used ... $4.99
An unlikely pairing of albums, but another nice 2-fer of classic Atlantic sides. The Jazz Messengers album is a great one – and features the firey hardbop of Blakey's late 50's Messengers (with Johnny Griffin and Bill Hardman) meeting the modernist piano playing of Monk, who was really hitting his stride at this point on his own Riverside recordings. The session's an interesting one, and if it lacks the groove of the usual Blakey album, Monk more than makes up for any lack of soulfulness by throwing in some nice complicated piano lines. We still prefer Bobby Timmons to Monk with Blakey – but the album's worth having, and includes nice Monk tracks like "Evidence", "Blue Monk", "I Mean You", and "Purple Shades". The MJQ session's a live one, and features the usual tightly arranged chamber jazz approach. Tracks on that one include "Bag's Groove", "Blues Milanese", "Pyramid", and "The Cylinder". CD

The overdue debut of reedman Ari Brown as a leader – overdue in that Ari had years of Chicago recording experience – including work in Black Jazz label stalwarts The Awakening, and even some time with Ramsey Lewis too! This set has Brown in wonderfully mature formation – more hardbop than his 70s work, and plenty soulful too – as he blows tenor, alto, soprano sax, and flute – and even plays a bit of piano too – in a combo that also features Kirk Brown on piano, Yosef Ben Israel on bass, and Avreeal Ra on drums! Some tunes have a nice mix of spiritual currents and swing – and all titles are originals, and include "Big V", "Lester Bowie's Gumbo Stew", "One For Luba", "Meeting Time", "Sincerity", and "Ultimate Frontier". Miles DavisBlue Moods ... CD
Debut/OJC, 1955. Used ... $6.99
An odd little session for Miles Davis – playing here with a great group, but one that's made up of musicians who are all uncommon sidemen for him, even at this early point in his career! Britt Woodman (a nom-du-date?) is on trombone, and Charles Mingus and Elvin Jones are in the rhythm section – plus Teddy Charles' vibes where you might expect a piano. As you might guess from the title and instrumentation, the set has more to do with Miles' more contemplative explorations of the time – his "blue moods" – than his more upbeat boppish styles, but that's where Charles' vibes come in and really make the set a great one. The group runs through a nice set of laidback, cool renditions of the tunes "Nature Boy", "Alone Together", "There's No You" and "Easy Living" – all done in nice longer takes! CD

Giant Steps (UK), 1954/1955/1956. Used 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A mighty assortment of early work from Brit jazz legend Joe Harriott – landmark stuff from the height of the mid 50s London scene! Killer Joe pretty much lives up to title's promise – and it works as a tight collection of Joe's early work as a soloist and leader of tight quartet, plus a portrait of his role as an integral player in the British jazz scene of the time – with Joe's alto sax genius right in the middle of all of it! The styles run from a fiery and frentic bop to some cooler sounds, string-enhanced mood pieces to some trad leaning bigger arrangements – and it's nice stuff all the way through! Other players to be heard include drummer Tony Kinsey, Bill Le Sage on vibes, percussionist/conga player Buddy Pipp, the great Ronny Scott on tenor sax, and many more. The 2CDs include some of the earliest stuff by the Joe Harriott Quartet, plus some of Joe's work as a player for the Tony Kinsey Trio, Buddy Pipp's Highlifers, vocalist Lita Roza, the Ronny Scott Orchestra and others. 17 tracks on disc one: "Summertime", "Out Of Nowhere" and more by the Joe Harriot Quartet, "Last Resort", "Get Happy" "Jump For Me", "Teddy" and more by the Tony Kinsey Trio w/Joe Harriott, "Akee Blues" by Buddy Pipps Highlifters, "Blues In Threes" by Kenny Baker w/ the Jazz Today Unit and more! 17 tracks on disc two: "Harlem", "She's Funny That Way" and more by Tony Kinsey Trio w/Joe Harriott, "You'll Never Know" by Lita Roza w/Tony Kinsey Trio & Joe Harriott, "Bang", "Big Fist" and more by Ronny Scott Orchestra, "Blues Original" by the Joe Harriott Quartet and more! Eddie JeffersonJazz Singer ... CD
Evidence, 1959/1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Rare work from Eddie Jefferson – cut between his early years on Prestige, and his revival on Riverside – work done for the Festival Records label, but best known in this hip 70s package put together by Inner City! The work here is a great precursor to Eddie's 60s comeback – and shows him really moving forward strongly, even on a tiny label – reworking his older vocal style with a hipper modern groove, and really reaching some new territory in the process. The tunes are awash in those charming tones and phrasings that always set Jefferson apart from the rest – and there's a few R&B undercurrents here, mixed in with the more familiar bop influences. Players are all great too – and include Johnny Coles or Howard McGee on trumpet, James Moody on tenor, Matthew Gee on trombone, Musa Kaleem on tenor and baritone, and Johnny Acea on piano. Babs Gonzalez and Honey Gordon get in a few licks on versions of "So What" and "Sister Sadie" – helping Eddie out with their hip vocal talents – and other tracks include "Memphis", "Baby Girl", "NJR", "I've Got The Blues", "The Preacher", "Night Train", "Sherry", "Body & Soul", and "Workshop". 18 tracks in all! A great little session by Jackie McLean – recorded in 1962 by Blue Note, but not issued until years later, only initially in Japan! The album's one of Jackie's last pure hardbop sides – recorded in the pivotal year of 1962, when he was just beginning to dip his toe into modernist ideas – and inflect his straighter work with some beautiful shifts, twists, and turns that skirted the fringes of modern jazz wonderfully. There's a vibe here that's totally great – one that has McLean breaking away from the pack and working in one of the freshest voices in jazz at the time. Players include Kenny Dorham on trumpet and Sonny Clark on piano – and tracks include "Three Minors", "Marilyn's Dilemma", "Iddy Bitty", and "Blues For Jackie". CD

Prestige/OJC, 1953/1954. Used ... $4.99
A full length set that compiles earlier sessions cut under either the name of Thelonious Monk or Sonny Rollins – most of them together in the same group! At the time of recording, Monk was an established figure on the bop scene, but Rollins was still a fresh voiced up-and-comer – yet they work together beautifully here on an early take of "Friday The Thirteenth" which really benefits from Rollins' voicing on tenor, next to Monk's angular arrangement. The pair also perform "The Way You Look Tonight" and "I Want To Be Happy" with a quartet – twisting the familiar tunes into strongly Monkish territory – and the album's last 2 tracks, "Nutty" and "Work" are performed by Monk with a trio that includes Percy Heath on bass and Art Blakey on drums. Charlie Parker in a Latin mode – one of those ideas that shouldn't work that well, but does – and went on to influence a whole generation in jazz! Parker's alto and Latin rhythms are an amazing combination – rhythms that move even more frenetically than regular bop modes – and a horn that simply soars over the top, driven on by their inspiration – and hitting these grooves that few later Latin jazz musicians could ever hope to touch! Much of the material here is in a small group mode – in contrast to the fuller charts on some other Parker cubop recordings from the time – with players who include Walter Bishop on piano and a young Kenny Dorham on trumpet. Saturn/Evidence, Early 60s. Used ... $14.99
2 rare Sun Ra Saturn albums back to back on one CD! Cosmic Tones is one of the Ra's greatest albums for Saturn – a record that has him playing clavioline and echoey "cosmic side drums" with a great spacey sound that was probably arrived at through some primitive reverb and echo techniques! The overall effect is everything you'd imagined about Sun Ra – a mixture of hardbop, soul jazz, and some spacey musings that are definitely out of this world! Titles include "Moon Dance", "Voice of Space", and "Adventure Equation". Art Forms features material recorded in New York in 1961, and released on Saturn in 1965 – but whatever the date, it's still light years ahead of its time! Ra plays piano, as usual, but he also works with some beautiful instruments of his own creation – including the strangely wonderful Sun Harp, the Dragon Drum, and the Spiral Percussion Gong. The percussion instruments are heard to great effect on the track "Solar Drums" – which has an echoey percussive sound that's really wonderful! The rest of the group includes John Gilmore, Ronnie Boykins, Pat Patrick, Clifford Thornton, Marshall Allen, and Clifford Jarvis – classic Ra players all of them – and other titles include "Lights On A Satellite", "Kosmos In Blue", and "Cluster Of Galaxies". Nice batch of tracks that had been recorded earlier in Rollins career (during the late 50s), but which were unearthed in 1962 in an effort to cash in on Rollins' return to jazz playing. Even though the motivation behind the album was a bit mercenary, though, it's a nice thing that it came out – as these tracks are very nice, and feature Rollins playing some excellent pre-retirement hardbop. Some of the cuts feature a quartet with Sonny Clark on piano, and others have Rollins in the Kenny Dorham Quintet (one of which even has some additional harp playing!) with Oscar Pettiford, Hank Jones, and Max Roach. The band is a heavily smoking one – with Dave Burns on trumpet, Stan Turrentine on tenor, and Wynton Kelly on piano – and Patato Valdez backs them up on conga on a number of tracks, too. The whole thing is perfectly put together, with an insanely tight rhythm line, and perfectly placed solos by Turrentine and Burns – really cooking with an intensity that matches some of the best Jazz Messengers albums of the time. An album that definitely lives up to its title – given the great change and evolution in the style of Cannonball Adderley's music – definitely pointed towards the soul jazz fame to come in the 60s! The group here has Adderley's alto in the company of some all-stars who may not be his regular group, but who definitely help keep the whole thing at a top-shelf level throughout – a quintet that features Milt Jackson on vibes, Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. There's still a few echoes of Cannon's earlier bop recordings, but the sound is also moving towards the new modes to come – especially on the classic title cut "Things Are Getting Better". The album's an early 80s gem from Enja – cut at a time when the label was really finding its own, and doing an especially great job of giving musicians just the right sort of outlet to move forward – in this case not just trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti, but also altoist Phil Woods and pianist Hal Galper – all of whom are great! There's an angular formation to most of the tunes at the start, but they flow with a warm, lyrical energy right from the start as well – supported by the drums of Billy Hart and bass of Mike Richmond – on titles that include "A Flat Miner", "Fairy Boat To Go", "Heart Bop", and "Triple Play". The "air" here might well refer to the charged atmosphere in the arena during the live show that makes up this set from Be Bop Deluxe – a nice summation of everything that Bill Nelson and the group had done on their studio classics from the mid 70s, maybe stripped-down here a bit away from the studio! Yet somehow, the music also has that wonderful sense of compression that the group always got – a way of layering the sound at a level that's maybe post-glam, pre-punk, and without some of the fuller trappings of ELO, with more of a focus on the guitar. The whole approach holds up surprisingly well on stage – and titles include "Shine", "Fair Exchange", "Sister Seagull", "Blazing Apostles", "Life In The Air Age", and "Ships In The Night". CD

Be Bop Deluxe have a bit of a new wave look on the cover, and the album definitely marks a change in sound a bit – heading towards some of the directions that Bill Nelson would take in years to come! Nelson produced the set with help from the great John Leckie – whose touch you can really hear on the tunes, which have a nice sense of focus on all the elements that make them so catchy and warmly wonderful – maybe somewhere in the territory of ELO or 10CC, but very distinctly Be Bop Deluxe. The album shows just how far Nelson and the group had come over the space of just a few records – and titles include "Kiss Of Light", "Gold At The End Of My Rainbow", "Make The Music Magic", "Bird Charmer's Destiny", "Dance Of The Uncle Sam Humanoids", "Honeymoon On Mars", "Dancing In The Moonlight", "Bring Back The Spark", "Modern Music", and "Down On Terminal Street". 2CD version features the original 1976 stereo mix, a new 2019 mix, and bonus tracks "Shine", "Bird Charmer's Destiny (first version)", and "Forbidden Lovers (first version)". Art BlakeyJazz Messengers! (Impulse) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Impulse, 1961. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
Killer work by Art Blakey – one of his few non-Blue Note sessions from the time, and a hard-wailing set that features the Jazz Messengers as a sextet! The format is one that flourished briefly in these early 60s years – and in this case, the already great lineup of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Bobby Timmons on piano is joined by Curtis Fuller on trombone – a frontline that makes for some really amazing music, and which starts to bring in a lyrical energy to the group that's really amazing! The force of Fuller on the ensemble cannot be denied – and the group shift from straight hardbop with a soulful bent into an even more inspired mode – as you'll hear on the album's classic reading of Fuller's "Ala Mode" – nestled in alongside Jazz Messenger takes on standards like "Invitation", "I Hear A Rhapsody", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". ✨✧ Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersAt The Cafe Bohemia Vol 1 (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1955. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A classic early set featuring the Jazz Messengers back when the group was less of an Art Blakey project, and more of an all-around affair – as you might guess from a lineup that also includes Horace Silver on piano, Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Doug Watkins on bass! The live set is one of the earliest and purest versions of Blakey's hardbop vision, touched with the slightly exotic lyricism of Silver, which gives the tracks a wonderful edge. The playing is excellent throughout – and the album's the kind of live stormer that shows why the group were such a huge draw right out of the box, and why they performed as well (if not better) in a live setting than they did in a studio one! Tracks include "Minor's Holiday", "The Theme", "Prince Albert", and "Deciphering The Message" – and the CD features 3 bonus tracks, all long, plus great remastering! CD

Art Blakey QuintetNight At Birdland Vol 1 (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1954. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderfully hard-storming set – and a record that not only firmly put the Jazz Messengers on the map, but also set a whole new standard for live jazz recording! The group here is the early version of the Messengers – almost co-led by drummer Art Blakey with pianist Horace Silver – and featuring Clifford Brown on trumpet, just a few months before his early death – plus Lou Donaldson on alto and Curley Russell on bass. The presence of alto instead of tenor makes the sound slightly different than later incarnations of the group – and the overall approach is one that virtually defines the shift from straight bop to hardbop in the 50s – a mode that both Blakey and Silver were key in creating. Tracks include "Split Kick", "Quicksilver", "Mayreh", and "A Night In Tunisia". CD features 2 bonus tracks, and great remastering! CD

Phono (Spain), Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $16.99
Very nice! Tenorist Tina Brooks had one rare album released for Blue Note (the classic True Blue), but he also recorded 3 others for the label which never came out. All four are great, and feature prime Blue Note hardbop by one of the best underrated tenor talents in the business. He's playing here with all star groups on every session, and players include Johnny Coles, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Sonny Clark, Jackie McLean, and Art Blakey. Great stuff! CD

Donald ByrdByrd Blows On Beacon Hill (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Transition/Blue Note, 1956. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
Beautiful hardbop from Boston – and one of the first-ever albums recorded by trumpeter Donald Byrd as a leader! The set was originally done for the obscure Transition label – also home to inventive early recordings by Sun Ra and Cecil Taylor – and as with those records, there's a very special sort of sound going on here – as the date's a quartet outing, with a very unusual group – with Ray Santisi on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Jim Zitano on bass – all giving Byrd plenty of room to solo in the lead. The record features a very different side than some of Donald's other early two-leader sessions (such as the dates with Pepper Adams) – especially as he blows with a warmth and moodiness that we don't normally hear from him at this point – sounding fantastic on titles that include "Little Rock Getaway", "If I Love Again", "What's New", and "Stella By Starlight". LP, Vinyl record album
(Part of the Blue Note Tone Poet series – heavy cover and vinyl!)
