✨✧ Walt Dickerson/Sirone/Andrew CyrilleLife Rays ... LP
Soul Note (Italy), 1982. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The musical partnership of Walt Dickerson and Andrew Cyrille is one that stretches back to the 60s – and with the presence of bassist Sirone on this set, they really hit some new musical heights! Dickerson's vibes here have that flowing, open quality from his best later years – an approach to the instrument that's completely set free from previous conventions, and which balances beautifully between rhythmic and melodic impulses – as do Cyrille's drums, which we almost like best during these Soul Note years than at any other point in his career. Tracks are all quite long and open – and titles include "Life Rays", "Good Relationship", "No Ordinary Man", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Horace SilverFurther Explorations (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1958. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 34.99
One of the most fantastic Horace Silver albums from the 50s – a set of complicated tunes that really lives up to its "further explorations" title! The session's a perfect example of the way that Silver was mixing hard bop sensibilities with more exotic styles of arranging in the late 50s – pushing past the straighter bop of his Jazz Messengers years, and moving into a territory that can only be described as "Silver-esque", and which went onto have a strong impact on many other players in years to come. And although not as well known as some of Silver's other classics from the time, the album's got some key tracks that show his talents at their best – like the genius "Moon Rays", or other originals that include "The Outlaw", "Melancholy Mood", "Pyramid", and "Safari". The group, which features Clifford Jordan on tenor and Art Farmer on trumpet, has an emotional maturity that you don't always get on Blue Note sessions from these days – and the album is a hauntingly lyrical batch of tracks that is among some of Silver's finest recorded work! VariousBrian's Imaginary Jukebox – Discreet Ruminations & Oblique 45s ... CD
Righteous (UK), Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
The "Brian" in the title is Brian Eno – as you might guess from that image from Another Green World in the middle of the cover – but the sound of this set is quite different than what you might expect! CD1 imagines the sounds that Eno would talk about informing the music of his youth – tracks that showed up often on jukeboxes stocked to service visiting American GIs, which meant that the were full of raw soul, R&B, and even a bit of jazz – elements that most folks wouldn't tie to Eno, but which you can definitely hear here in arranging and production elements that would show up on his early solo vocal music, and some of the Roxy Music sounds too. Titles include work by The Tokens, Paradons, Lafayettes, Little Willie John, Dinah Washington, Ernie K Doe, Raymond Scott, The Cosmic Rays, Moondog, and Leadbelly. CD2 features more modern moments – a mix of avant jazz, early electronics, and 20th century compositions that tie a more direct link to the ambient universe – titles that include "Dream" by John Cage, "Come Back To Earth With Me" by Louis & Bebe Barron, "Atmospheres (excerpt)" by Gyorgy Ligeti, "Sleepy Time" by Raymond Scott, "Fordommelse" by Elsa Marie Pade, "Rhythmic Variations 1" by Daphne Oram, "Low Speed (excerpt)" by Otto Lueninng, "Ignition" by Tom Dissevelt, "Ectoplasm" by Raymond Scott, and "The Bewitched (Scene 1)" by Harry Partcy. Prestige, 1960s/1970s. Used ... $3.99
Horace Silver in many flavors – a great range of jazz recordings from the Prestige/Fantasy catalog – all based around classic compositions by Silver! Horace was a Blue Note man, and never recorded for other labels back in the 60s – but his music had a huge reach for generations to come, as you'll hear on this great mix of cuts that includes soul jazz groovers, vocal numbers, and even the odd Brazilian bit too! Titles include "Ecaroh" by Wes Montgomery, "Filthy McNasty" and "The Preacher" by Eddie Jefferson, "Peace" by Tommy Flanagan, "Moon Rays" by Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete, "Sister Sadie" by Ray Brown, "Song For My Father" by Richard Groove Holmes, "Strollin" by Jack McDuff, "The Preacher" by Shirley Scott, "Nica's Dream" by Blue Mitchell, and "Opus De Funk" by Art Pepper. VariousSwitched-On Eugene ... CD
Numero, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
The world of moogy music first exploded back in the late 60s – when artists like Bruce Haack, Perry-Kingsley, and others were making all these wonderfully weird records that featured heavy analogue electronics and other playful elements! By the 80s, most of that music had gone away – some migrating to the world of new age, others turning more mainstream – yet up in Eugene, Oregon, there was a small scene that continued the electronic experiments of years past – work that sounded very different than most of the darker cold wave and industrial sounds that were popping up at other points on the globe. This collection offers up a long-overdue look at that scene – and features work from a collective of artists who really continue some of the hippest traditions of the genre – from the early records that Bruce Haack made with Miss Nelson, to some of the weird Mort Garson productions, even to some of the more wigged-out French psych/electronics of the 70s. Some of these tracks have vocals, some are instrumental – and they're all nicely "switched on" – providing a great bridge between the world of Walter Carlos and the Stereolab generation to come. Titles include "Energy" by Kim Carter, "Other Playgrounds" by Peter Kardas, "The Seven Rays" by David Stout, "Finale From A Walk Down Serenity Lane" by Joel Horowitz, "Self Regulation 2" by Carl Juarez, "The Ride" by Talve, "New Snow" by Peter Nothnagle, and "Patterns" by Suse Millemann. ✨✧ Sun RaSingles ... CD
Saturn/Evidence, Mid 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A totally essential 2 CD set that brings together a huge amount of singles that were recorded by Sun Ra and others for his legendary Saturn label! As you probably know, the albums that were recorded for Saturn were rare enough – but the singles on the label were even rarer, and some of them were pressed in batches as small as 75 copies! The material is a very strange mix of jazz, soul, doo wop, and R&B – but it's all got the off-kilter Sun Ra twist to it, and the music is a key slice in the independent history of underground jazz pioneered by Ra & The Arkestra. You'll hear plenty of stuff by Ra (including the legendary "I'm Gonna Unmask The Batman") – and you'll also get stuff by Lacy Gibson, The Cosmic Rays, The Nu Sounds, Yochannan, and The Qualities. Annotated with 36 pages of detailed notes, written by 4 different Ra experts – and a treat for collectors and novices alike! CD

✨✧ Sun Ra & OthersSingles – The Definitive 45s Collection 1952 to 1991 (3CD set) ... CD
Strut (UK), 1950s/1960s/1970s/1980s/Early 90s. Used 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A whole new side of the talents of Sun Ra – especially if you only know the longer-style jams on some of his albums from the 60s and 70s! From the very start of his career, Ra was every bit as interested in issuing music on 45s as he was on albums – and in fact, at some of the more desperate times, the 7" single turned out to be a very affordable format to try out new ideas – including some great projects with other artists! The array of work presented here is stunning – as the set includes some very up-close and personal moments with Ra on record, plus some tight jazzy tracks from the Arkestra, surprising vocal group material designed to crack the R&B market, and some especially cool projects with other singers too. The package is put together with very detailed notes on all the singles – and while the bulk of this material comes from the key Arkestra years of the late 50s through the early 80s, there's also a few tracks from other dates too – including a handful of songs that were only issued as 45s in later years. 3CD set features a stunning 65 tracks in all – and titles include "Chicago USA" by The Nu Sounds, "I'm Coming Home" by Billie Hawkins, "Softalk" by Sun Ra, "Demon's Lullaby" by Le Sun Ra, "It's Christmas Time" by The Qualities, "M Uck M Uck (Matt Matt)" by Yochanan, "Bye Bye" by The Cosmic Rays, "October" by Sun Ra, "Adventur In Space" by Sun Ra, "Back In Your Own Backyard" by Hattie Randolph, "The Sun One" by Yochanan, "Dreaming" by The Cosmic Rays, "The Sun Man Speaks" by Yochanan, "Daddy's Gonna Tell You No Lie" by The Cosmic Rays, "Last Call For Love" by Billie Hawkins, and "Super Blonde" by Sun Ra. ✨✧ Pharoah SandersMoon Child (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Timeless/Tidal Waves, 1989. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful late 80s work from Pharoah – a wonderfully uncomplicated session that still has a great degree of soul! The album was recorded in Paris, with a quintet that includes William Henderson on acoustic piano, Stafford James on bass, Eddie Moore on drums, and Cheikh Tidiane Fale on percussion – and the overall approach is a bit more straight ahead than on some of Sanders' other albums – but in a really great way! The tunes are long and introspective – all done with spiritual rhythmic approaches, letting Pharoah open up on tenor and soprano sax – but never in a way that's overblown or overdone. The solos are perfectly placed – with wonderful phrasing and tone, rich in the colors that we've always loved on Sanders' work, but which can sometimes get lost in the confusion of an over-ambitious session. Titles include "Moon Child", "Moon Rays", "Soon", "Moniebah", and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sun RaContinuation (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Saturn/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1963. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing music from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – sounds recorded during the same marathon session that gave the world the records Other Planes Of There, When Sun Comes Out, and When Angels Speak Of Love – but titles that are much more obscure overall! The initial release of the material featured very misleading notes, but the true details of the session are even more impressive – as Ra plays a variety of unusual instruments alongside piano – including the piano strings, space organ, and clavioline – alongside some sublime straight horn work from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and oboe, Pat Patrick on baritone, Danny Davis on alto and clarinet, Walter Miller on trumpet, Robert Cummings on bass clarinet, and Ali Hasaan on trombone! The lineup here has that raw power the Arkestra first unleashed after their initial move to New York – almost a sense of new freedom in the new environment – even at a time when they weren't clicking on a financial level, but still continued to push forward with new ideas in music! Some passages have this great approach that links the cosmic ideas of the Arkestra with older traditions of jazz soloing – while others reflect the growing concern of the group with new textures and sounds – making for some very impressive elements on both the horns and percussion. The group is completed by Ronnie Boykins on bass, Art Jenkins on space voice and percussion, and Tommy Hunter on drums, percussion, and some mighty nice reverb – and titles include "Biosphere Blues", "Intergalactic Research", "Earth Primitive Earth", "New Planet", and "Continuation To Jupiter Festival". Beautiful 2CD reissue features sublime sounds from the original tapes, remastered – plus a full bonus CD of unreleased tracks that include "Blue York", "Conversation Of The Universe", "Red Planet Mars", "Cosmic Rays/Next Stop Mars", "The Myth", "Meteor Shower", "Infinity", "The Beginning Of", and "Endlessness". ✨✧ Baby Face WilletteFace To Face (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1961. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the all-time great tenor/organ sessions on Blue Note – totally fierce, with a sound that's a lot rawer than most other work on the label! The incredible Baby Face Willette grooves it hard and heavy on Hammond – working in a quartet that includes Fred Jackson on tenor, Grant Green on guitar, and Ben Dixon on drums – a killer lineup that makes for a very cooking sound throughout! There's a bit of an R&B-ish tinge to most of the tracks on the set – gutbuckety soul jazz, of the sort you'd hear on a label like Prestige, but recorded with more of the Blue Note sense of poise and professionalism – a very unique blend that makes the album an essential one in any collection. Titles include "Swingin' At Sugar Rays", "Face To Face", "Something Strange", and "Goin Down". LP, Vinyl record album

A killer collection of rare tracks from the glory days of the So-Cal surf rock scene, plus some hot rod tunes too – a glorious mix of vocal and instrumental tracks, all of which show that there's plenty more to discover than just the Beach Boys, Ventures, and Jan & Dean! This hefty CD package actually brings together two album's worth of material – 29 titles in all, not the 16 mentioned on the cover – and almost all the music is pretty darn rare, from the farther reaches of the indie scene of the time – with plenty of fast-driving fuzz guitars on the instrumentals, and some great harmony vocals on the lyrical tracks – all packaged together with the wallop of a huge wave cresting on the shore! Titles include "Varoom" by Warner Brothers, "Swingin Hangout" by Mark Four, "Get A Board" by The Val Rays, "Don't Drag No More" by Suzan Lynne, "Go Mustang" by The Triptides, "Kick Out" by The Safaries, "Surf Bunny Beach" by The Surf Bunnies, "Don't Monkey With Tarzan" by The Pygmies, and "Side Swiped" by The Torquetts. A really lovely late-life portrait of Billie Holiday – an oversize book that's filled with black and white photographs taken during the month of April, 1957 – when Billie was headlining at the Sugar Hill club in Newark! Holiday's late troubles are well-known, and often etched upon her face on album covers from the period – but this book really gets past some of those too-familiar cliches, and captures the singer in a range of really vivid ways – onstage and off, outside and in, alone or with family, and always a really fantastic subject for the camera. Perfect summer pop! After Murray Wilson was kicked out by his sons, the Beach Boys, he went on to prove to the world that he could create another group that was every bit as good as them. Truth is, he failed, but that doesn't stop the Sunrays from being a fantastic bit of 60's pop surf harmony sounds, noteworthy as much as for their keen attempts to sound like the Beach Boys, as for their failure to not reach the heights that Brian and the other Wilsons did. The songs are totally nutty, too, and the lyrics are more messed up than the Beach Boys' ever were. Our faves include "A Little Dog & His Boy", "Tears In My Eyes", and "Have To Be Myself". Scary proof that Murray have have had more to do with the BB's sound than we all thought! LP, Vinyl record album

Disc one is a 12" single that features the "Caligula Love Theme" in regular and disco versions – sung by "Lydia" and pretty darn trashy! Brewer & ShipleyDown In LA ... LP
A&M, 1968. Very Good+ ... $6.99
The A&M debut of Brewer & Shipley – and a set that's got a lot deeper sound than the duo's later radio hits! There's a youthful, earnest feel going on here – touched with a bit of sunshine, too – all in that wonderfully fresh feel you'll get from the early A&M forays into rock – this magical vibe that's not nearly as posturing, or as self-conscious as some of the heavier projects from bigger labels at the time. Songwriting is sensitive, delivered beautifully by the two voices – and instrumentation often has acoustic elements that echo the love of country that was bubbling in the LA scene of this late 60s Byrds generation. Yet the vibe is quite different than anything you might know, too – almost somewhere between the Roger Nichols Trio and Lambert & Nuttycomb – showing a nice A&M evolution that links together both acts. RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
A great collection of work from Ray Columbus – a New Zealand rocker of mid 60s vintage, but one who works here with mod sounds to rival much bigger names in London at the time! The collection begins with a core set of work by Ray Columbus & The Invaders – a super-sharp combo who have this sense of energy and fire that's a bit like Paul Revere & The Raiders, but more tuned towards beat group sounds – boundless energy that makes the rest of the combo a perfect fit for Ray's spirited lead vocals. The set then moves into solo material that Columbus recorded on his own, and with groups The Challenge, The Art Collection, and Fire – all with stylistic shifts that follow some of the British forays into trippier sounds after the initial beat boom – or some more compelling, more sophisticated material that Columbus really carries off well as a solo act. Titles include "She's A Mod", "I'm Finding Out", "She's Back Again", "Till We Kissed", "We Want A Beat", "In Memory Of Today", "Happy In A Sad Kind Of Way", "Los Angeles", "I'm Good For You", "Polka Dot Resistance", "Kick Me", and "East Pinkerton Street". A 1977 album for Warner Brothers – one that has the group hitting a smoother, tighter sort of sound – nicely compressed 70s pop, of the sort that both Frankie and the Seasons had been hitting in some of their individual chart forays during the decade. Bob Gaudio's very firmly in charge here – producing and writing the lyrics, and really showing a good talent for this sort of more adult approach to pop. Frankie himself is a bit more in the background than you might think, but that's also one of the things that makes the album so nice. The deeply in-demand beats for Jay Dee's now classic 2001 effort – The first of BBE's forays into new school hip hop – finally available! We don't need to tell you that Welcome 2 Detroit turned out to be and a wonderful debut for the initial BBE hip hop series. It really started out as a breakbeat project from Detroit's Jay Dee, but soon morphed into a full-on hip hop album – complete with live instrumentation on Fender Rhodes, trumpet, keyboards, and drums, with lyrics on about half of the tracks. This one returns the project to more of that pre-planned breakbeat feel. A stellar set, with lyrics, or without – one that laid the groundwork for Dilla's subsequent production aesthetic! Features great remakes of "African Rhythms" (Oneness of Juju), "Brazilian Groove" (Earth Wind & Fire), and "Think Twice" (Donald Byrd), plus the cuts "Y'all Ain't Ready", "Shake It Down", "Give it Up", "The Clapper", and "Come Get It", "Think Twice" and more! As The Record Turns, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
Amazing Afro Funk from one of the greatest groups of the genre – The Lafayette Afro Rock Band, a funky ensemble recording in Paris in the early 70s! The group were working in a hotbed of cross-cultural styles – and brought American funk rhythms firmly into play with African influences – creating grooves that were even heavier and harder than the work at the time by Fela Kuti, and which have stood for years as some of our favorite funk records! This album's one of their best – named after the title cut, their great take on Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa" (done here even funkier than the original!), and featuring other great tracks, like "Voodounon", "Azeta", and "Hihache" – all of them filled with heavy bass, tight drums, and fuzzy guitar! A fantastic album of grooves from the mighty Alex Puddu – and a record that's worth it alone for its guest work from Gene Robinson Jr on a few tracks – a singer whose voice was part of the classic sound of Breakwater! Puddu's groove has really shifted into the jazzy funk of Robinson's old group here – a mode that's as clubby as promised in the title, but which also draws on the richness of some of Alex's other records – which have included strong forays into straighter 70s funk and blacksploitation styles! And the record's not straight disco at all – more the kind of hip, sophisticated funk that would play well on a less-mainstream dancefloor – full of all the best modes that were bubbling up in the late 70s/early 80s underground – almost as if Puddu's giving a nod the world of Joey Negro, but with less uptempo rhythms in the mix. VariousGlitter & Gold – Words & Music By Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99
One of the greatest guy/girl songwriting teams of the 60s – featured here in a killer collection of some of their best work! The range of artists here is nicely wide – from rockers to pop crooners to soul groups – and all of the tunes are key readings of songs penned by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, possibly not the highest-charting versions, but easily some of the greatest ever set to record! Ace really did a great job with this one – matching the heights of their other songwriter series titles, and really bringing out the darkness in the Mann/Weil songs – a subtle sort of sadness that comes through perfectly in most of these versions. The 24 page booklet features track-by-track notes on the tunes – really getting at the story of the recordings – and titles include "It's Not Easy" by The Sweet Inspirations, "Kicks" by Del Shannon, "It's Getting Better" by Mama Cass, "The Bossa Nova" by Tippie & The Clovers, "Hungry" by Paul Revere & The Raiders, "It's A Happening World" by The Tokens, "Chico's Girl" by The Girls, "Glitter & Gold" by The Turtles, "In The Park" by The Drifters, "Where Do I Belong" by Calvin Grayson, "Let Me Walk With You" by The 2 Of Clubs, "She Is Today" by Bergen White, "Girl It's Alright Now" by Bruce & Terry, "Where Have You Been All Of My Life" by Arthur Alexander, and "I'd Be So Good For You" by Joanie Sommers. ✨✧ VariousMod Jazz & Then Some ... CD
Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A really great entry into one of our favorite series ever – and a set that's overflowing with rare jukebox jazz from the 60s! These aren't the heady tracks of the Coltrane generation, but the kind of soulful stompers that were brewing underneath – circulating on 45s from lots of indie-labels – and often sitting in a sweet space between hardbop and R&B! Lots of tunes have a very mod feel – hence the title – either a strong tenor solo, or some sweet Hammond, or some skittish rhythms – and the set features lots of tracks that we'd never heard before, and a few more than we'd forgotten about too. Titles include "Bossa Baby" by Googie Rene, "Hen House" by Paul & Rick, "Another Child Lost" by Floyd White, "The Fat Man (part 1)" by The TKOs, "Bucket Full Of Soul" by Trudy Pitts, "Cooking In Grease" by Reuben Wilson, "Watermelon Walk" by The Five Counts, "Hard Working Girl" by Clarence Daniels & Obie Jessie, "You Were Wrong" by The Miles Grayson Trio, and "El Tacos" by Frenchy & The Chessmen. VariousWest Meets East – Indian Music & Its Influence On The West (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A really great look at the surprisingly strong influence of Indian music on Western styles in the postwar years – and a package that digs really deeply, and offers up way more than just a few classic rockers picking up a sitar! Instead, the whole thing starts years before The Beatles and contemporaries were touting the qualities of Indian music – and begins in the 50s, when modal rhythms had started to hold sway on a generation of jazz musicians, and modern composers – in part because key Indian music recordings were being issued overseas in the US too! The package spans about a decade of recordings, and interweaves jazz, classical, exotica, and other styles with original recordings of the musical styles – with a great lineup of tracks that brings together Sun Ra, Joe Harriott, Eric Doplhy, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ravi Shankar, John Coltrane, Ali Akbar Khan, Victor Felman, Emil Richards, Bela Bartok, Les Baxter, Martin Denny, Brian Easdale, Satyajit RaySabicas, Yusef Lateef, and others! ✨✧ Ill ConsideredIll Considered 6 ... LP
Ill Considered (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This album's got a slightly expanded version of Ill Considered in place – but at a level that never strays far from the greatness that's made us love them right from the start! The core quartet, as usual, features the mighty Idris Rahman on tenor sax, Leon Brichard on bass, Emre Ramazanoglu on drums, and Satin Singh on percussion – and this time around, they also get added guitar from Steve Ashmore, who colors in the tunes with some gentle shades, but often in a way that only augments the subtle soundscape, and never seems to have him taking on too much of a role as a soloist – at least not with the burning fire of Rahman's tremendous tenor! Interestingly, the group also list a sixth member here – artist Leon De Boer on "brush pencil" – surprisingly important, although not in a musical way – as his artwork has really given the group a visual aesthetic on all of their albums. Titles include "Gunning", "Ward", "Waterfall", "Amber", "Predator", "One Single Leaf", and "Percolator". LP, Vinyl record album

BBE (UK), 2001. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first of BBE's forays into current hip hop – and a wonderful debut in the series! The album started as a breakbeat project from Detroit's Jay Dee, but soon morphed into a full-on hip hop album – complete with real instrumentation on Fender Rhodes, trumpet, keyboards, and drums, with lyrics on about half of the tracks. Features great remakes of "African Rhythms" (Oneness of Juju), "Brazilian Groove" (Earth Wind & Fire), and "Think Twice" (Donald Byrd), plus the cuts "Rico Suave Bossa Nova", "Shake It Down", "Give it Up", "The Clapper", and "Come Get It". ✨✧ MountainMountain Live ... LP
Windfall, 1972. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mountain may be a rock group – and a heavy one at that – but they've also earned plenty of nods from DJs and crate-diggers over the years – thanks to their fierce, funky work on this classic live album from the 70s! You'd be amazed at how many times we turn up this record in collections of soul and funk – and for good reason, as the drums on the leadoff track "Long Red" are stunning right from the start – one of the early blueprints for a new generation of hip hop samples, and a great bit of funk on its own! Plus, the Leslie West/Felix Pappalardi team that drives the record has had more than a few forays into soul – as you'll hear on West's choppy guitar work, and the white boy soul qualities of the vocals. In addition to "Long Red", other great cuts include "Crossroader", "Nantucket Sleighride", and "Waiting To Take You Away". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Alice RussellUnder The Munka Moon ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful set from UK chanteuse Alice Russell – one of the best records yet to come out on always reliable Tru Thoughts label! Alice's strong soul vocals have added real depth to tracks by Quantic and others, but here she succeeds tenfold as the marquee artist! She has a heavy, resonate style that portrays a genuine love for Minnie Riperton and Chaka Khan at her best – and she's given some wonderful material here to showcase her strengths. The TM Juke produced opener "Hurry On Now" takes a light symphonic soul approach, complete with lovely string charts and slowly rolling drums. Alice is equally at home with mellow, Latin groove of "Sweet As The Air". Other tracks take a more stripped down, jazzy combo approach while still working in some organic, yet still pretty housey touches here and there. It's a winner all the way through – one that should bust the gates wide open, making Alice Russell one of the most in-demand UK soul vocalists for years to come! "Someday", "Hard Times", "Tired Little One", "Peace Resides", "Taking Hold", "Something That's Real", "Search The Heavens", "Take Your Time, Change Your Mind", "Sweet Calling", "Somebody's Gonna Love You" featuring Quantic and more. ✨✧ VariousAnother Banana Split Please – More Gems From The Good Old Summertime ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great set of tracks to celebrate the summer – mostly music that predates the big wave of beach and surf rockers of the 60s, and which show that there was still plenty of joy about the warmer months of the year during previous scenes in the postwar years! As with the earlier volume, the music here is in a variety of different styles – early rock and pop, straight out vocals, bits of jazz, and even some exotica too – all laid out in a mighty long list of songs that provide the perfect soundtrack for a sunny summer afternoon! The whole thing's handled with the usual Bear Family strengths of presentation and quality sound – and titles include "Here Comes Summer" by Jerry Keller, "Summer Is Here" by The Pals, "Dark Dark Sunglasses" by The Kittens, "Bikini" by The Bikinis, "Sea Nymph" by Les Baxter, "Sealed With A Kiss" by The Four Voices, "This Is The Night" by Larry Tamblyn, "Keeping Cool With Lemonade" by Nick Noble, "Soda Pop Pop" by Vince Eager & The Vagabonds, "Surf Bunny" by Gene Cray & The Stingrays, "Everybody Outta The Pool" by The Lifeguards, and "She Takes Sun Baths" by Sammy Salvo. 33 tracks in all! Analog Africa (Germany), 1986/1987. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
80s sounds from the Somali scene – but served up with a lean, raw quality that feels a lot more like 70s funk overall! In a decade where some of the other scenes on the continent were using more beats, electronics, and keyboards – Dur Dur Band still keep things plenty live, and plenty loud – using these massive basslines that dip with influences from Latin and Jamaican music – while also hitting hard with a sharper funky sound on the guitar and drums, and also hitting some cool modes on the reeds that have a strong East African vibe! The production is as raw as the instrumentation – and the whole thing's got a gritty edge, even when a few moogy keyboards come into the mix. Titles include "Dab", "Ohiyee", "Yabaal", "Heelo", "Doon Baa Maraysso", "Bubba Aaka, "Aduun Hawli Kama Dhamaato", and "Keen Gardaran". Polskie Radio (Poland), 1964. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A set of swinging large group sounds mixed with vocal jazz numbers – all recorded at Poland's Jazz Jamboree festival in 1964! The real highlight here for us is the music of the Gustav Brom Orchestra – that cool Czech ensemble that later recorded some gems for MPS/Saba, but who here are already moving into some of their more modern conceptions – that strong sense of both color and swing that made Brom such an inventive leader. The group perform the tunes "Sonor", "Get Out Of Town", "African Nights", "Romance Of The Sea", and "Deep Water". The set also features some swinging vocal jazz numbers from the great Rita Reys from the Netherlands – working here with the Pim Jacobs Trio, who always provided her with the best sort of sounds – on titles that include "Bluesette", "Willow Weep For Me", "Moonglow", "Speak Low", and "I Get A Kick Out Of You". Andrzej Kurylewicz leads the Polish Radio Jazz Orchestra on titles that include "Cute", "Guma", and "Ballad For Anna" – and the set also features a few trad numbers from the Warsaw Stompers – including "Bat", "Panama", and "March Of The Charcoal Grays". ✨✧ David HessLast House On The Left – Original 1972 Motion Picture Soundtrack (brown colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
One Way Static, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
David Hess's chillingly great soundtrack to one of the most notorious horror movies of the 70s – Wes Craven's Last House On The Left! Hess's musical pedigree is that of a folk and rock songwriter – and one of the things that makes his songs for Last House On The Left so effective is the way his delicate, tuneful songcraft contrasts with the terrifyingly real sadism and revenge on screen. The other thing that makes it so effective, is that Hess himself portrays the despicable Krug in the film – taking part in said cruelty! The soundtrack has Hess's oddly lovely little songs, along with some incidental period touches, swatches of dialogue and instrumental bits – composed in collaboration with Steve Chapin. This version from One Way Static is totally top notch, too – with liner notes by exploitation cinema and genre veterans Ruggero Deodato, Franco Nero, Ulli Lommel and others. Includes "Little Cows Lookin' For Some Grass", "Baddie's Theme (Instrumental)", "Mari's Birthday Surprise", "Phyllis Spills Her Guts", "Now You're All Alone", "The Chase", "Daddy, Put Your Coat Of Many Colors On", "Mayhem Montage", "Ice Cream Song", "Urban Snatch", "Edude For Chainsaw/Goodbye, Dick" and more.
