Ravi Shankar & Ali Akbar-KhanMaster Musicians Of India ... LP
Prestige, 1964. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A pretty great pairing of Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar-Khan – and a set that's nicely different than some of Shankar's more familiar work of the 60s! The group here features sitar by Ravi and Sarod by Ali – plus tabla and two tambouras – all stretched out over side-long tracks that have a very modal sort of groove. Titles include "Raga Palas Kafi" and "Raga Bilashanki Todi". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue trident label pressing with RVG etch. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Ravi ShankarImprovisations ... LP
World Pacific, 1962. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An early American recording by Ravi Shankar – with some brief help from American jazz players! The bulk of the record features Ravi in a trio with tampura and tabla, performing long tunes similar to the ragas on his other albums from the time – but there's also a great track called "Fire Night" that features work by Louis Hayes, Bud Shank, Dennis Budimir, and Gary Peacock, all grooving on a bit of a modal jazz tip, making the track dance like a lively little MPS world jazz number! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label World Pacific pressing with deep groove. Cover has small seam splits.)

Ted LucasTed Lucas ... LP
Yoga Records, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
The lasting legacy of the enigmatic Ted Lucas – a somewhat mysterious figure who moved between Detroit and Los Angeles in the late 60s – but who works here with a sound that's completely his own! Part of the record was created as demo tracks for Warner Brothers – who'd issued some of Ted's earlier singles with other bands – but the material never got released on the bigger label, but has the kind of completely individual vibe that really captures the spirit of the best underground work Warner was handling at the time. Lucas sings shorter tracks on side one – but often with this weird sort of overlapping production style – creating his own vocal harmonies that resonate with slightly jagged guitar lines – flowing out in modes that partly illustrate his experience studying sitar with Ravi Shankar on the west coast, partly just show a love of unusual tunings that would have made Lucas great even as a solo instrumentalist. Side two definitely moves more into those modes – territory that resonates nicely with Sandy Bull or Robbie Basho – and titles include "Plain & Sane & Simple Melody", "Now That I Know", "Baby Where You Are", Robins Ride", "Sonny Boy Blues", and "Love & Peace Raga". LP, Vinyl record album
(Great reissue – heavy vinyl, and a nice insert of notes!)

Atlantic, 1969. New Copy 10CD & book ... Out Of Stock
An amazing tribute to the legendary Woodstock music festival – the first one to ever feature performances from all the artists who stepped on stage – all in a massive 10CD set that comes in a great book-style package that's filled with detailed notes, photos, and memorabilia too! All the tracks here have been completely remastered – and the set offers way more of a full vision of Woodstock than previous LP or CD editions – offering up groups of tracks by each artist, acting like a set-by-set recreation of the famous series of concerts in 1969 – with a fair bit more folk in the mix than usually presented. Includes material by Richie Havens, Sweetwater, Bert Sommer, Tim Hardin, Ravi Shankar, Melanie, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Quill, Country Joe McDonald, Santana, John B Sebastian, Keef Hartley, Incredible String Band, Canned Heat, Mountain, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sly & The Family Stone, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, Country Joe & The Fish, Ten Years After, The Band, Johnny Winter, Blood Sweat & Tears, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Butterfield Blues Band, Sha Na Na, and Jimi Hendrix. 162 tracks in all – and a beautiful package!
