Ravi ShankarRagas & Improvisations 1956 to 1962 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CDs ... $19.99 29.99
The birth of a legend – a set that brings together all the important early recordings that made Ravi Shankar such a key ambassador for Indian music in the 60s – long tracks that mix his sitar with really incredible percussion, all spun out with pulsating modal energy that went on to have a huge impact on jazz, rock, and even more serious classical music too! Given that Shankar's cited as an influence by folks from Philip Glass to George Harrison to countless others, this package is really the place to start if you want to understand his music – and as with other titles from the Fremeaux label, the presentation is great, with lots of music in the set, and notes in French and English. Titles include "Raga Ramkali", "Raga Jog", "Raga Simhendra-Madhyamam", "Raga Ahir-Bhairav", "Dhun Kafi", "Raga Hamsadhwani", "Raga Rageshri", "Fire Night", and "Improvisation On The Theme Music From Panther Panchali". Ravi Shankar & The Shankar FamilyShankar Family & Friends ... CD
Dark Horse/BMG, 1974. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
One of the wildest albums ever recorded by sitar genius Ravi Shankar – a set done for the Dark Horse label of George Harrison – who also plays guitar and autoharp on the record too! Yet Harrison is just one of many friends hinted at in the title – as Shankar brings in a host of other Indian musicians and singers – including vocalist Lakshmi Shankar, tabla player Alla Rakha, and violinist L Subramanian – next to work from more familiar LA musicians who include Billy Preston on organ, Emil Richards on percussion, Paul Beaver on moog, and Tom Scott on saxes and flute! The result is a majestic LA flowering of ideas that Shankar first showed the world many years before – all filtered through the imagination of George Harrison, who supported Ravi often over the years, and brought his creative genius to a much larger audience. Titles include the long "Dream Nightmare & Dawn" suite – plus "I Am Missing You"," Jaya Jagadish Hare", and "Kahan Gayelava Shyam Salone". CD

✨✧ Ravi ShankarImprovisations ... CD
Angel, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
An early American release by sitar genius Ravi Shankar – and a set that already shows his strong influence on other worlds of music – as he works here on one track with help from some young musicians on the west coast scene! The bulk of the record has Shankar in a small group – with Kanai Dutta on tabla, Harihar Rao on dholak, and Nodu Mullick on tampura – creating loose grooves that are filled with plenty of the improvisation in the title – the side-long "Raga Rageshri" and "Improvisation On The Theme Music From Panther Panchali". But there's also one great jazz track – "Fire Night" – which has work from reedman Bud Shank, guitarist Dennis Budimir, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Louis Hayes – all grooving on a bit of a modal jazz tip, making the track dance like a lively little MPS world jazz number! Apple, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Groovy batch of ragas from the soundtrack to this film about Ravi Shankar. We've never heard of the film, but given that the whole thing's very lovingly packaged by Apple – with a good booklet and everything – you almost don't need to see the movie. George Harrison headed up the whole project, and the record features a lot of shorter tracks and excerpts from longer performances – like "Frenzy & Distortion", "Bombay Studio", "United Nations", "Baba Teaching", and "Dawn To Dusk". ✨✧ Ravi ShankarSounds Of India ... CD
Columbia, Late 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very early US release of work by Ravi Shankar – originally part of Columbia's "Adventures In Sound" series, a mixed mood music/world music imprint that offered up some excellent work in its day! The set begins with a compelling "Introduction To Indian Music" – spoken by Ravi himself over the course of a few minutes, with bits of instrumentation used to illustrate his points. Shankar's sitar is in a trio with tabla and tambura – and after that spoken introduction, the record then moves into four longer trance-like tracks – "Dadra", "Maru Bihag", "Bhimpalasi", and "Sindhi Bhairavi". ✨✧ Ravi ShankarLife In Music ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Not the whole life of Ravi Shankar in music – and instead, a really cool concentration of work from one of his greatest periods ever – that magical late 50s/early 60s moment when he was completely transforming the sound of Indian music, and beginning to have an influence on the wider world as well! Most of the numbers here are long ragas, played in that complicated rhythmic style that made Shankar so great – and most numbers are quite extended, all going well over 10 minutes, and a few even pushing close to the half hour mark as well. One title – "Raga Palas Kafi" – features work with Ali Akbar Khan – and other titles include "Raga Jog", "Dhun In Mishra Mand", "Raga Rageshri", "Raga Desi", "Raga Charu Keshi", "Misra Piloo", and "Raga Ahir Bhairav". ✨✧ Ravi Harris & The ProphetsFunky Sitar Man ... LP
BBE (UK), 1997. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Surprisingly fantastic bit of funky sitar tracks! The project's a recent one, but it's got a classic 70s global crossover funk sound that's very much in the vein of the weird Indian-funk work of Ananda Shankar or The Dave Pike set. The record's got a raw Meters-esque groove at the base – which makes for a very tight funky sound – and Ravi plays these cool sitar licks over the top, in some very tasty riffs! Includes a bunch of great originals, like "Funky Sitar Man", "Path of the Blazing Sarong", and "Ravi's Thing" – plus great covers like "Look A Py Py", "Same Beat", and "Pass the Peas". Really good stuff, and way better than we expected it to sound! LP, Vinyl record album

A pretty hip record – a lot cooler than you'd expect from Buddy Rich! The record features Rich playing with a group of Indian musicians lead by Alla Rakha on tabla, conducted by Ravi Shankar, who also wrote all the material on the album – and Paul Horn also joins the group for a bit of flute on some tracks. The tunes are mostly in the Indian idiom, with less jazz touches than you might expect from Rich's presence – and Buddy mostly supplys fills and some harder drum riffs on the tracks. Titles include "Khanda Kafi", "Duet In Dadra", "Tal Sawari", and "Nagma E Raksh". CD

✨✧ Ustad Vilayat KhanGenius Of Ustad Vilayat Khan ... CD
El (UK), Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Four long ragas from Ustad Vilayat Khan – all played with a hypnotic quality that's really wonderful, and an edge that seems to set him apart from the sound of his contemporaries Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan! Vilayat's sound on the sitar is mighty sharp throughout – very piercing, in a way that really gets down to the soul, and which resonates strongly with the tabla work and other light added instrumentation that propels the tracks along. We'd almost be tempted to say that Khan's music here seems to inspire the sound of electric sitar in years to come – and titles include "Raga Bhairavi", "Raga Tilak Kamod", "Raga Ahir Bhairav", and "Raga Khamaj". ✨✧ Red KrayolaGod Bless The Red Krayola & All Who Sail With It (deluxe edition) ... CD
International Artists/Snapper (UK), 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A landmark bit of avant prog psych from the American underground of the late 60s – the astral mindblower that is God Bless The Red Krayola & All Who Sail It! This second album is the group's early masterpiece – a brilliant, jarring psychedelic work of genius! It's got the strangeness of the Parable LP, but Mayo & the boys have a way with strange melody that escaped the earlier album. It's often buried under the astral wierdness and abrasive tendancies, but it nevertheless casts a spooky glow throughout! Tracks inclcude "Ravi Shankar: Parachutist", "Leejol", "Night Song", "Green Of My Pants", "The Jewels Of The Madonna", "Tina's Gone To Have A Baby", "Say Hello To Jamie Jones", and "Coconut Hotel". This 2011 edition was remastered by Sonic Boom – and includes a deluxe booklet with liner notes by Paul Drummond. CD

✨✧ VariousHow The River Ganges Flows – Sublime Masterpieces Of Indian Violin 1933 to 1952 ... CD
Third Man, 1930s/1940s/Early 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful collection of rare work pulled from a variety of different 78rpm singles – Indian classical music from the generation before Ravi Shankar and a few other artists gave it global exposure – with an especially strong focus on the use of the violin next to sitars and tablas! The violin is amazing – very stretched out and snakey – used maybe with some techniques of European heritage, but with a sonic result that's very very different – and a perfect fit for the rhythms and other instrumentation in the tracks! The collection is very well-done – similar to such projects on labels like Dust-To-Digital or Honest Jons – and titles include "Raga Thodi" by Gajanan Madhav Karnad, "Nagumomu Ganale (parts 1 & 2)" by Muthi & Masni, "Ragamalika Ragam Thanam (parts 1 & 2)" by Dwaram Venkatswamny Naidu, "Ikanaiana Raga Manirang" by Mysor Chowdiah, and the tracks "Raga Adana", "Thumri", "Raga Bageshree", "Raga Ahir Bhairi", and "Raga Sur Malha" by Paritosh Seal – clearly the star of the set! Also features two earlier, pre-classical tracks – "Thodi" and "Ragam Alapana" by Cunniah Naidu. CD

A really great idea for a collection – one that brings together postwar modern music in all of its many formats – from avant jazz, to early electronics, to Indian music, 20th Century classical, and even a bit of straighter jazz moments too! The package is very ear-opening – as it offers the chance to hear instrumentalists next to compositional talents that had inspired them – and the collection provides a way to hear different strains of sonic experimentation that were sometimes running parallel to each other, sometimes criss-crossing in strange ways. There's a wealth of musical discoveries throughout – and the 4CD set is overflowing with key cuts from Ornette Coleman, Bela Bartok, Edgard Varese, Daphne Oram, Jean Sibelius, Eric Dolphy, Ravi Shankar, Pierre Henry, John Cate, John Coltrane, Humphrey Searle, Arnold Schoenberg, Bill Evans, Olivier Messiaen, Luigi Nono, Charles Ives, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bruno Maderna, Julian Bream, and many others.
