✨✧ Ravi ShankarChants Of India (180 gram red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Dark Horse/BMG, 1997. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The music of Ravi Shankar was a big influence on the work of George Harrison during the 60s – and here, the ex-Beatle returns the favor by giving Ravi a really beautiful setting for his work on sitar – a well-produced album, handled in the studio by George with an even more lofty setting than usual for his music! There's a fair bit of chanted vocals alongside the sitar, percussion, and other instrumentation – almost the sense of spirituality you'll find in a 70s album by Alice Coltrane, but with the Indian roots of the music much more to the forefront. The whole thing's got a really timeless vibe – very different than you might expect from the date – and titles include "Geeta", "Vandanaa Trayee", "Asatao Maa", "Omkaaraaya Namha", "Gaayatri", "Sahanaa Vavatu", "Sarve Shaam", and "Vedic Chanting One". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition red vinyl pressing.)

Oliver CraskeIndian Sun – The Life & Music Of Ravi Shankar (hardcover) ... Book
Faber & Faber (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $8.99 32.00
Sitar genius Ravi Shankar was a huge figure on the American scene in the 60s – an important musician who helped get Indian music the recognition it deserved – and who went on to influence giants like The Beatles and Philip Glass in their own music as well! Yet despite these obvious and oft-told touchstones, Shankar has a much longer, richer story – all of which is covered here in tremendous depth – the result of a huge project that involved over 130 interviews, materials from the Shankar family archives, and countless other hours of research – all to really get at the unique place that Ravi holds in the global music scene! This heavy, hardcover volume is over 650 pages, including some very detailed notes and other information at the end – packaged with two sections of black and white images as well. Book

Paul HornCycle ... LP
RCA, 1965. Very Good ... $9.99
A fantastic early album from reedman Paul Horn – modal jazz throughout, with a very different groove than some of his later world/jazz records! There's a bit of global elements at play – in that Horn borrows from other cultures for some of the rhythms, including a bit of influence from Ravi Shankar – but the group here is strongly jazz-based, and features Lynn Blessing on vibes, Michael Long on piano, Bill Goodwin on percussion, and the great Bill Plummer on bass! Tracks include "Shadows", "Cycle", "Greensleeves", and "In The Bag". Great stuff, and a beautiful record that often gets overlooked! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original black label stereo pressing, with deep groove. Cover has light surface wear & aging.)

VariousHow The River Ganges Flows – Sublime Masterpieces Of Indian Violin 1933 to 1952 ... CD
Third Man, 1930s/1940s/Early 50s. New Copy ... $10.99 15.00
A really beautiful collection of rare work pulled from a variety of different 78rpm singles – Indian classical music from the generation before Ravi Shankar and a few other artists gave it global exposure – with an especially strong focus on the use of the violin next to sitars and tablas! The violin is amazing – very stretched out and snakey – used maybe with some techniques of European heritage, but with a sonic result that's very very different – and a perfect fit for the rhythms and other instrumentation in the tracks! The collection is very well-done – similar to such projects on labels like Dust-To-Digital or Honest Jons – and titles include "Raga Thodi" by Gajanan Madhav Karnad, "Nagumomu Ganale (parts 1 & 2)" by Muthi & Masni, "Ragamalika Ragam Thanam (parts 1 & 2)" by Dwaram Venkatswamny Naidu, "Ikanaiana Raga Manirang" by Mysor Chowdiah, and the tracks "Raga Adana", "Thumri", "Raga Bageshree", "Raga Ahir Bhairi", and "Raga Sur Malha" by Paritosh Seal – clearly the star of the set! Also features two earlier, pre-classical tracks – "Thodi" and "Ragam Alapana" by Cunniah Naidu. CD

VariousNotes From The Underground – Radical Music Of The 20th Century (4CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99 38.99
A fantastic set that really lives up to its title – by presenting a variety of music that all represented the farther reaches of modern sounds in the middle of the 20th Century – electronics, avant classical, and even groundbreaking jazz and poetry as well – all put together in a package that's as sonically striking as the cover! What makes the set great is the way it jumps around in genres and styles – very much as if it were representing the record collection of some New York intellectual at the start of the 60s – with a mix of sounds from Varese, John Cage, Stravinsky, Stockhausen, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Charles Ives, Schoenberg, Ali Akbar Khan, Satie, Allen Ginsberg, Ravi Shankar, and Ornette Coleman! There's also some work by Daphne Oram, who wasn't as available on vinyl over here at the time – but whose contributions sit nicely next to work by Pierre Schaeffer on the set – which is also rounded out by some tracks from The Prisoner and Un Chien Andalou too. 4CDs, great notes, and a heck of a lot of groundbreaking music! VariousRevolution In Sound – Pop Culture & The Avant Garde (4CD set) ... CD
El (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $24.99 30.99
A really great idea for a collection – one that brings together postwar modern music in all of its many formats – from avant jazz, to early electronics, to Indian music, 20th Century classical, and even a bit of straighter jazz moments too! The package is very ear-opening – as it offers the chance to hear instrumentalists next to compositional talents that had inspired them – and the collection provides a way to hear different strains of sonic experimentation that were sometimes running parallel to each other, sometimes criss-crossing in strange ways. There's a wealth of musical discoveries throughout – and the 4CD set is overflowing with key cuts from Ornette Coleman, Bela Bartok, Edgard Varese, Daphne Oram, Jean Sibelius, Eric Dolphy, Ravi Shankar, Pierre Henry, John Cate, John Coltrane, Humphrey Searle, Arnold Schoenberg, Bill Evans, Olivier Messiaen, Luigi Nono, Charles Ives, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bruno Maderna, Julian Bream, and many others.
