Arthur ConleyShake, Rattle, & Roll ... LP
Atco, 1967. Very Good ... $19.99
The second Arthur Conley album for Atlantic – and like the first, a record that really cooks with some great Otis Redding production! The sound and style is very similar to Otis' work for Stax during the 60s – but the album was recorded at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, with engineering by Jimmy Johnson, and it's got a bit of a different sound from the Memphis soul of Otis' records. There's more horns, and less organ and guitars, and Conley's vocals are produced in a raw style that brings out the best of his work. Includes versions of the Otis Redding tracks "Ha Ha Ha" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long", plus Conley's own "Love's Got Me", "Hand & Glove", and "I'll Take The Blame". LP, Vinyl record album
(60s purple and tan label stereo pressing. Cover has splitting on the seams, light surface wear, and some aging. Vinyl has a short click on "Baby What You Want Me To Do".)

GypsyComes A Time – The United Artists Recordings (Gypsy/Brenda & The Rattlesnake/bonus tracks) ... CD
United Artists/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
The full United Artists recordings of this enigmatic group – two full albums, and a bonus single too! First up is the self-titled Gypsy – work by a group who shouldn't be confused with the American act of the same name, even though their sound definitely has some influence from the rootsier sound of our scene at the same time! Acoustic and electric guitar lines mix up nicely, and the group often harmonize the lyrics between the singers – with a sinister edge at times that's a nice surprise, and an unusual approach that's nicely hard to peg – almost as if these guys took a jar full of familiar influences, shook it up, and poured out a special brew of their own. Titles include "Turning Wheel", "I Want To Be Beside You", "Standing Alone Feel So Bad", "Pony Ride", "Keep On Trying", and "What Makes A Man A Man". Brenda & The Rattlesnake has the group changing their lineup slightly, and their sound a bit more – really tightening things up on both the guitars and the vocals – which have this really wonderful focus that's produced strongly with a nice current of fuzz at the edges. There's a sense of compression that marks some of the more mainstream British work of the period, but these guys are hardly pop at all – maybe just a bit more hard rocking than before, but still very much their own bag. Titles include "Change Your Mind", "Shame", "Who's Cheating", "Brand New Car", "Midnight Fighter", and "Let's Roll". 2CD set features detailed notes, and the bonus single "Changes Coming" and "Don't Cry On Me". ✨✧ Baden PowellBaden Powell Swings With Jimmy Pratt ... CD
Elenco/Universal (Japan), 1963. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Baden Powell albums of the 60s – a beautiful little set that's co-crafted by the bossa guitarist and Brazilian drummer Jimmy Pratt! The arrangements are a bit unusual for Powell – and feature lots of small combo woodwinds grooving around the tight percussion of Pratt – as a sad and sweet flute or oboe line sets the pace for most of the tracks, followed-up by Baden's jaunty work on acoustic guitar. The whole thing's got a style that adds a bit of west coast chamber jazz to the bossa – and features tracks that include "Coisa No 1", "Manequim", "Nao E Bem Assim", "Tema No 1", and "Deve Ser Amor". Brotzmann/Kondo/Pupillo/Nilssen-LoveHairy Bones ... CD
Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99
Pretty hairy stuff from Peter Brotzmann and crew – a set that blasts right out of the gate with some really bone-rattling noise! The album's a live set, recorded recently in Amsterdam – featuring Brotzmann on alto, tenor, b flat clarinet, and tarogato – alongside Toshinori Kondo on electric trumpet, Massimo Pupillo on electric bass, and Paal Nilssen Love on drums. The electricity in the instruments can definitely be felt on the title track "Hairy Bones" – a hard-driving tune that runs for over 30 minutes, and which really recalls the energy that Brotzmann had a few decades before, when crossing over big to new audiences around the globe. "Chain Dogs" is even longer, but starts a bit slower – but then really bursts forth with more noisy elements on trumpet and bass – some really speaker-rattling stuff! CD

Jimmy CastorFrom The Roots ... LP
Paul Winley/Demon (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 27.99
Killer early soul from Jimmy Castor – material that's mostly from the years before his better-known Smash Records and RCA sides – done in a wickedly-grooving style! The work here is a mix of upbeat dancefloor numbers and mellower harmony cuts – and even at this early stage, Castor's clearly a powerhouse in soul – really able to get his bag together, and deliver a tune with a tightness that's totally great – especially given that the Winley Records production still keeps an edge in the music that's plenty darn raw! There's plenty of charm, and a great sense of variety in the tunes – and titles include "Poor Loser", "Block Party", "Soul Sister", "Rattle Snake", "It's OK", "A Dream Affair", "Oh Susanna", and "Hangin Out". K Frimpong & His Cubanos FiestaMe Da A Onnda ... LP
Hot Casa (France), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A funky highlife stunner from the mighty K Frimpong – an artist who always seems to find a way to make a familiar groove sound even heavier than you might expect! That's definitely the case here – as rattling percussion really sets the scene for every track – sometimes with instrumentation that's a bit more familiar to the best highlife jams of the times, but other times with a hard and heavy early 70s funk approach that's in the best James Brown tradition! The album features four extended tracks that are all nice and long – and although there's vocals on the record, the main appeal is the fantastic instrumentation – on titles that include "Daben Ni", "Me Yee Owu Den", "Nye Mea", and "Me Da A Onnda". Ruben Lopez FurstJazz Argentino/Jazz En La Universidad ... CD
Melopea/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1966/1967. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
Two rare albums from this great pianist – back to back on a single CD! First up is Jazz Argentino – key work from Ruben Lopez Furst, a wonderful pianist from the Argentine scene of the 60s – heard here on one of his greatest albums ever! Despite the local placement in the title, the set's got a really universal appeal – a quality that easily puts Baby Lopez Furst in the company of Bill Evans, Hampton Hawes, or a rare few imaginative pianists from up north! Furst's sense of color and timing are wonderful – ringing out fluidly, yet always with a sense of surprise that keeps us hanging on each new note – nothing that's ever hokey or heard-before – handled here with a vibrancy that's simply stunning. Many numbers are trio tracks, but the set also features guest trumpet and tenor on two tracks – and titles include "Israel", "Un Abajea Duriente", "Los Viejos", "Al Este Del Sol", "Sometime Ago", and "Cartas De Amor". Next is Jazz En La Universidad – one of the real highlights of the Argentine jazz scene of the 60s – a seminal album from pianist Ruben "Baby" Lopez – easily one of that country's greatest jazz musicians in the decade! Ruben's got a sound that opens up with the lyrical sense of space and tone first introduced by Bill Evans, but he's also more note-full at other moments – playing with a command of the piano that would have made him huge, had he recorded on the American or European scenes of the time! There's a warm balance between his instrument, the bass of Jorge Gonzalez, and drums of Nestor Astratta – one that goes past conventional piano trio modes, and which really reminds us of our favorite Saba/MPS sessions of the period. Titles include "Un Poco Alegre", "Hombre Amaestrado", "En Tu Dulce Modo", "Hermosoa Amor", and "Necesitare Alguien Mas". CD

One of the greatest contemporary talents on vibes – sounding great here in the company of a very tight quartet! In truth, the group was the "pod" of Behn Gillece during 2020 – players that really know each other, and who work together effortlessly here on a set of tunes that explode with the kinds of colors and tones we've always loved in Behn's music! All tracks are original, which furthers the special, intimate vibe of the group – written and performed by a quartet that features Art Hirihara on piano and Fender Rhodes, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – matching the energy of Gillece at every turn, on titles that include "Rattles", "Extraction", "Event Horizon", "Going On Well", "Don't Despair", "Outnumbered", and "Glad To Be Back". Beautiful sounds from two modern masters of the guitar – both playing here on a mix of electric and acoustic variations of the instrument, with sonic properties that unfold in wonderful ways throughout the set! Both Grubbs and Walker have a way of doing a lot with just a little – even when some effects are used to complicate the sound a bit – always still very organic, and with an understanding of the elements that's always brought back to a completely coherent sense of the guitar. Grubbs plays piano at a few spots, but most of the set features guitar – and titles include "Pump Fake On The Death Rattle", "Uglification", "Tap On The Shoulder", "Accepting Most Plans", and "The Madman From Massachusetts In An Empty Bar". ✨✧ Ngozi FamilyDay Of Judgement ... CD
Now Again, 1976. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
Some of the heaviest work to come from the African scene of the 70s – the initial offering of the Ngozi Family – a group who clearly take strong inspiration from the Cream years of the UK scene, but who also come across with a grittier, punkier vibe overall – thanks to lean, stripped-down instrumentation and some very sharp drums! The drums rattle out underneath the magnificent fuzzy guitar lines in the lead – almost with this compressed quality that recalls Thin Lizzy at their funkier moments – but much more raw, stripped-down, and unpolished – so that the English language lyrics burst out with a really biting sound! The record's one of the first in the Zamrock tradition, and is still one of the best – a set that deserves to be in any collection of hard rock, proto-punk, and even funk rock from the 70s. Titles include "I Wanna Know", "Day Of Judgement", "We Wonna Give It To Her", "Tikondane", and "Let Me Know". CD comes in a great book-style cover – and features the bonus tracks "We Were Not Told", "She Looks So Crazy", "I've Been Looking For You", and "Sunka Mulamu". CD

SexSex (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trans Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
The debut album from this heavy Canadian power trio – a group who definitely put themselves on the line with their name – and the weird cover image of them running topless through a field! Fortunately, the sound's a lot less dated than that might make you expect – really hard-wailing in an early hard rock mode – that style that was probably brewed up in blues rock a few years before, but really set free during the psychedelic era – which makes for lots of long guitar solos from Yves Rousseau, alongside the vocals and harmonica of Serge Gratton, and the monstrous drums of Robert Trepanier. If these guys were in the UK, they might have been huge – although they unfortunately titled one of the songs on the album "I Had To Rape Her" (were they nuts?) – and that might have kept this one out of the mainstream. Other cuts include "Come Wake Up", "Night Symphony", "Love Is A Game", "Scratch My Back", and "Not Yet". Note that this reissue truncates the title of the controversial song! LP, Vinyl record album

Ira SullivanCircumstantial (plus bonus track) ... CD
Nessa, 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
An overlooked later gem from Chicago trumpeter Ira Sullivan – maybe some of the greatest music he ever recorded, thanks to the freewheeling vibe and strong artist respect of the Nessa label! Sullivan's working here on a variety of horns – trumpet, flugelhorn, flute, and soprano sax – with all the kind of soulful undercurrents we love on his classic Atlantic album Horizons, but with an even richer, more exploratory sort of style overall – one that gets a lot from the group's lineup of Simon Salz on guitar and Jodie Christian on both acoustic and electric piano! Both players seem to ignite Sullivan's best impulses, and really push him into fresh territory – guided strongly by the work of Dan Shapera on bass and Wilbur Campbell on drums. Titles include a sublime version of "Girl From Ipanema" – very offbeat – plus "Monday's Dance", "Circumstantial", "Angel Eyes", and "That's Earl Brother". CD also features the previously unissued "Blues For Johnny Bratton". CD

Gabor SzaboNightflight ... LP
Mercury, 1976. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Wonderful 70s work from Gabor Szabo – a record that has him picking up a bit more of a soulful undercurrent, while still keeping all his great guitar work nicely upfront! The album has Gabor recording at the legendary Sigma Sound Studios – with help from Philly soul arrangers Richie Rome and Bunny Sigler, who use some elements in the music from their work on Philly club hits – but still really keep enough space for Szabo to serve up some great solos as well! The groove is actually deeper and more inspiring than some of Gabor's work at CTI – with a bit more variety too – and titles include the spacey "Concorde (Night Flight)", plus "Babby Rattle Snake", "Smooth Sailin", "Theme For Gabor", "Every Minute Counts", and "Keep Smilin". Pablo, 1975. Very Good+ ... $8.99
A great mix of jazz and blues from Joe Turner – a set that seems to draw from his Kansas City roots, yet also inflect the sound with some of the blues changes of the 70s! Joe's got two key soloists here – Sonny Stitt on tenor and alto, and Pee Wee Crayton on guitar – and the vamping piano lines of JD Nicholson ensure some very timely rhythms for the record, maybe tipping things a bit more towards the blues side of the spectrum overall. Titles include a very long take on "Lucille", the nine-minute "Martin Luther King Southside", which is a laidback blues with plenty of solo room – and the cuts "Everyday I Have The Blues", "Shake Rattle & Roll", and "Piney Brown". A very unusual collection – one that features all sorts of rare French advertisements from the previous century – a good number of which are songs performed by some of the bigger names of the time! The set's got an unusual format, in that it mixes straight radio ads with songs and jingles – a really striking sort of presentation, and one that will make you feel like you've tapped into Parisian radio at mid-century, spinning through the years as you spin the dial! Most of these tracks were never issued to the public at all, and are pulled from rare tapes and transcriptions – serving up a whopping 88 tracks in all – performed by artists who include Charles Trenet, Jean Valton, Louis Aragon, Ray Ventura, Pierre Daragon, Nicole Ratte, Henri Salvador, Maurice Chevalier, and others – to advertise products that include Cinzano, Gilette razors, Ricard, and even the comic character Tintin! Cache Cache (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $22.99 26.99
Forget the darker sounds of the cold wave generation – and fall in love with the groovier, funkier style of these electronic gems from the post-punk years! The music here is as heavy on keyboards and electronics as the first volume in the series – and the tunes sometimes have vocals, sometimes a strong instrumental focus – almost always with some sort of a groove! There's a whole strain of tracks here that almost feel like some early 80s evolution of the moog pop modes of the Perry-Kingsley generation – and given the dates, and the budgets of most of the artists, the instrumentation is more analogue than you might expect. As always with Finders Keepers/Cache Cache, the track list is superb – and the whole thing is the sort of musical discovery that's always made us totally love the label! Titles include "Die Liebe Ist Ein Abenteuer" by Ti Tho, "Rattan" by Cosmic Overdrive, "Meat Grinder" by George Atwell, "Walking Away" by Vibrant Thigh, "Chicken Skin Planet" by Beach Surgeons, "Einstein" by Cos, "Welcome Home" by Pragvec, and "Zombie 2" by Andrzej Korzynski. Bear Family (Germany), Early 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A way cooler set than you might expect – rock and roll from early 60s German that has a voice that's all its own – not slavish takes on American hits, but some really great work that shows that this new generation of musicians are really finding their own sound and style! Sure, there's a definite influence from the US – but the songs are all pretty darn fresh, and many of them have this really mad sort of vibe – almost a German take on the kind of wild and oddball 45s that you'd be likely to hear from the Cramps side of the spectrum! As part of that, there's a wealth of wonderful guitar work – really stepping out next to the mostly German lyrics – on a set of 33 tunes that include work by Benny Quick, Nora Nova, The Gisha Brothers, Peter Kraus, The Starfighters, Ted Herold, Pichi, The Rattles, Progressives, Six Tornados, Billy Sanders, and others. The funky Rob way is a massive one at that – a new path into Afro Funk modes for the 70s, with a groove that's made this set a collectors classic for decades! The group is tighter than most, yet more skittish too – percussion rattling alongside basslines that have these echoey qualities that go deep and dark, but with more of a soul-based style than some of the psych-influence work from Zimbabwe and other scenes of the time! Spare electronic bits come into play with the keyboards, guitar, drums, and bass – but at a level that's never overdone – just enough to keep things slightly offbeat and unsettling, while Rob himself grooves away in the lead! It's almost impossible to describe in words what makes this set so unique – but one drop of the needle will have you hooked for life – thanks to cuts that include "Funky Rob Way", "Forgive Us All", "Boogie On", "Just One More Time", "More", and "Your Kiss Stole Me Away". Bratty Bay Area pop punks Green Day hit the bigtime – paving the way for FAR too many lesser acts to hit paydirt, sure, but you can't get too mad at Billie Joe, Mike and Tre for that when this one is still such a blast decades later! Nowhere near as lowbrow as the title or cover art would make it look, it's actually one the better rock & roll albums of its era to convey the thoughts and feelings of bored, lonely, angry and in some ways pretty depressed youth...somehow doing that through catchy sing-a-long anthems. Pretty amazing thing to pull off, actually! Includes "Longview", "Welcome To Paradise", "Chump", "Basketcase", Pulling Teeth", "When I Come Around", "She", "Sassafras Roots" and more. CD

A fantastic album of melodica grooves – right up there with the famous work of Augustus Pablo, and done in a very similar mode! The backings are deep and dubby – heavy on bass and riffing guitar, with a brooding energy that's really contrasted by the lighter, more melodic elements of the melodica that move in the frontline! The set was only ever issued as an advance release by producer Phil Pratt, but gets proper issue here – along with a number of bonus tracks from around the same time – which makes for a double-length collection of mighty nice instrumentals. Titles include "Terminal Rock", "Counter Punch", "Counter Dub", "What About The Half Version", "Fat Keys", "Dub Hill", "Behold I Come", "Raw Roots", "Money", "Dub In Fruits", and "Strange Mood". ✨✧ Ilmiliekki QuartetLand Of Real Men (with bonus download) ... LP
WeJazz (Finland), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The long-overdue return of a combo that had a huge impact on the sound of jazz on the Scandinavian scene over the past decade or two – given that its members have been involved in such important projects as Five Corners Quintet, Tuomo, Oddarang, and the Timo Lassy combo! Yet at the core, these four musicians are all very individual, and very different than some of that work – much more jazz-based, with a creative interplay between rhythm, tone, and texture – the last of which comes through especially strong in the trumpet work of Verneri Pohjola, which is completely sublime – almost with the power of a tenorist in some ways, but very tied to the structure of his instrument. Tuomo Prattala provides some really amazing textures on piano, alongside the bass of Antti Lotjonen and drums of Olavi Louhivuori – in modes that really keep things interesting throughout. The group begins with a great instrumental reading of Laurie Anderson's classic "O Superman", and other tracks include "Ravelogue", "Land Of Real Men", "Twisted Thistle", "Afterimage", and "Lonely Lonely". ✨✧ Incredible String Band5000 Spirits Or The Layers Of The Onion ... LP
Elektra, 1967. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The second album from Incredible String Band – and incredible it is, a UK psychedelic folk gem that finds the group challenging conventions across the board – both artful and inviting, it's wonderful stuff! At this point, Clive Palmer had left, and Mike Heron and Robin Williamson contribute lead vocals with the additional vocalist Licorice also taking lead on a few tunes, the sound is fleshed out with more accompaniment and a rich warmth on a bevy of instruments – guitar, sitar, bowed gimbri, finger cymbals, tamboura, oud, rattles, flute, bass and piano. Includes the lovely and oft-covered "The First Girl I Loved", plus "Chinese White", "No Sleep Blues", "Painting Box", "The Eyes Of Fate", "The Hedgehog's Song", "You Know What I Could Be", "Gently Tender", "Way Back In The 1960s" and more.
