David Liebman/Adam Rudolph/Hamid DrakeChi ... CD
Rare Noise (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
One of the most spiritual albums in years from saxophonist Dave Liebman – but maybe that comes as no surprise, given that he's working here with percussionists Adam Rudolph and Hamid Drake! The tracks are often grounded in percussion – used by both musicians at a less rhythmic level than you might expect, especially Drake – who always has a great way of evoking so many different sounds from his instruments. Rudolph brings in a bit of electronics – but never much at all, and always used in very subtle ways – and both he and Liebman play piano at points, on different tracks – while Dave blows soprano, tenor, and wooden recorder. Titles include "Flux", "Continuum", "Emergence", "Whirl", and "Formless Form". CD

Bobby Previte/Jamie Saft/Nels ClineMusic From The Early 21st Centry ... CD
Rare Noise (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A pretty heady little set, from a pretty heady trio of talents – drummer Bobby Previte, guitarist Nels Cline, and keyboardist Jamie Saft – who works here on Hammond, Fender Rhodes, and mini-moog! The music is very dark and often distorted – as if the other two musicians have borrowed some of Cline's love of effects, which are often used to deepen and abstract his sound – which is definitely the case here, as the music builds in waves of fuzz that bring a very progressive feel to the record – a bit like some of those great early 70s experimental sets that were equal parts jazz and psych. Titles include "Parkour", "Paywall", "Totes", "Occession", "The New Weird", "Machine Learning", "Woke", and "Flash Mob". CD

Red KiteRed Kite ... CD
Rare Noise (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A heady slice of psych jazz from Norwegian combo Red Kite – a group with strong to ties to Norway's free jazz scene and a way of pairing that kind of adventurous experimentalism with heavy psych and prog influences! Kicking off their self-titled album with a heavy take on Alice Coltrane's "Ptah, The El Daoud" with rolling drums, spacey keys and fuzzy guitars that go heavy and cosmic, unlike the soaring and spiritual original – while the remaining all original numbers roll from lumberingly heavy to spaciously moody. The group is a quartet featuring Even Helte Hermansen on guitars, Tronde Frones on bass, Bernt Andre Moen on keys and Torstein Lofthus on drums, and titles include "13 Enemas For Good Luck", "Flew A Little Bullfinch Through The Window", "Focus On Insanity" and "You Don't Know, You Don't Know". Rare Noise (UK), 2019. New Copy 3LP ... Out Of Stock
A masterful meeting of the minds – as the set brings together Sun Ra Arkestra members Marshall Allen and Danny Ray Thompson – with contributions from the younger generation of Jamie Saft, Trevor Dunn, and Balaz Pandi – plus a bit of guest work from trombone legend Roswell Rudd! Tracks are long and open, and have a vibe that's somewhere between Saft's great recent work on the Rare Noise label, and what you might expect from Allen's participation – on tunes that include "Inhale", "Goma", "Amulet", "Sacred Authority", "The Summoning", "Honoring The Healing Spirits", and "Loa". ✨✧ Jamie SaftHidden Corners ... CD
Rare Noise (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Pianist Jamie Saft is building up a great name as a collaborator with older jazz musicians – really finding a way to unlock the best aspects, or "hidden corners", of their talents – and that's definitely the case here, in a very fluid quartet setting with the great Dave Liebman on tenor, soprano sax, and flute! As with other recent recordings, there's a spiritual current to Jamie's work on the piano that's really great – sometimes free, sometimes modal – given strong support from Bradley Christopher Jones on bass and Hamid Drake on drums – the latter of whom is amazingly at home on the session, which stands as just one more feather in his very mighty cap. Liebman sounds more soulful and expressive than we've heard in years – really giving his all to the performance – and titles include "Hidden Corners", "Turn At Every Moment", "Landrace", "The Anteroom", "231 Gates", "Seven Are Double", and "Positive Way". ✨✧ Jamie Saft/Steve Swallow/Bobby PreviteYou Don't Know The Life ... LP
Rare Noise (UK), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Keyboardist Jamie Saft works here with a mighty great trio – one that features older giants Steve Swallow on electric bass and Bobby Previte on drums – all bringing a great sense of energy to Saft's own work on Hammond organ, Whitehall organ, and Baldwin electric harpsichord! The harpsichord alone is worth the price of admission – an instrument not often used in jazz (maybe by Jack Wilson or Hank Jones in the 60s) – and played here by Jamie with this chunky force that often creates some nice distortion around the edges. Yet the other keys are great, too – and Swallow and Previte provide wonderfully youthful accompaniment – really taking us back to their sounds and styles of the 80s, as if nothing has changed at all. One of the best moments we've ever heard from Saft on record – with titles that include "Dark Squares", "Water From Breath", "The Break Of The Flat Land", "Stable Manifold", "Ode To A Green Frisbee", and "Re Person I Knew". A great-looking bossa compilation – with loads of fun moments! The set features a super-groovy assortment of tunes that mixes together famous bossa groovers with some other more obscure numbers – and the overall feel of the whole thing is very much in a tight jazzy mode, with a strong 60s drive to it. Titles include "Bossa Nova (I Say)" by Bobby MacKay, "Samba De Uma Nota So" by Coral De Ouro Preto, "Boy From Ipanema" by Sarah Vaughan, "Samba Ninternacional" by Os Farroupilhas, "Telefone" by Walter Wanderley, "Menino Travesso" by Edison Machando, "Reza" by Paul Winter, "O Pato" by Pedrinho Mattar, "Mas Que Nada" by Tamba Trio, and "Upa Neguinho" by Edu Lobo". 22 tracks in all! Gruppo Improvvisazione Nuova ConsonanzaEroina (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cometa (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Rare work from this legendary Italian improvisational group – a lineup that features famous modernists Mario Bertoncini, Egisto Macchi, and Walter Bianchi – as well as soundtrack genius Ennio Morricone! The sounds are quite dark and abstract – often somewhere out in the space of Morricone's more atonal soundtracks from the early 70s, but even looser overall – as you can feel the improvisational energy of the players coming together – feeling out space between spare percussion, strings, and horns. The record actually has one famous funky number – "Haschich", which has this amazing break underneath some off-tuned sitar and other odd noises – but most other tracks are much darker and more outside. Other titles include "Orgasmo", "Eroina", "Aghi", "Warum", "Raptus", and "Stridori" – plus another take on "Haschich". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition of 300 – on clear vinyl!)
