Marshall Allen, Danny Ray Thompson, Jamie Saft,Ceremonial Healing (3LP red vinyl pressing) (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Rare Noise (UK), 2019. New Copy 3LP ... $40.99
A masterful meeting of the minds – as the set brings together Sun Ra Arkestra members Marshall Allen and Danny Ray Thompson – with contributions from the younger generation of Jamie Saft, Trevor Dunn, and Balaz Pandi – plus a bit of guest work from trombone legend Roswell Rudd! Tracks are long and open, and have a vibe that's somewhere between Saft's great recent work on the Rare Noise label, and what you might expect from Allen's participation – on tunes that include "Inhale", "Goma", "Amulet", "Sacred Authority", "The Summoning", "Honoring The Healing Spirits", and "Loa". David Liebman/Adam Rudolph/Hamid DrakeChi ... CD
Rare Noise (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
One of the most spiritual albums in years from saxophonist Dave Liebman – but maybe that comes as no surprise, given that he's working here with percussionists Adam Rudolph and Hamid Drake! The tracks are often grounded in percussion – used by both musicians at a less rhythmic level than you might expect, especially Drake – who always has a great way of evoking so many different sounds from his instruments. Rudolph brings in a bit of electronics – but never much at all, and always used in very subtle ways – and both he and Liebman play piano at points, on different tracks – while Dave blows soprano, tenor, and wooden recorder. Titles include "Flux", "Continuum", "Emergence", "Whirl", and "Formless Form". CD

Red KiteRed Kite ... CD
Rare Noise (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A heady slice of psych jazz from Norwegian combo Red Kite – a group with strong to ties to Norway's free jazz scene and a way of pairing that kind of adventurous experimentalism with heavy psych and prog influences! Kicking off their self-titled album with a heavy take on Alice Coltrane's "Ptah, The El Daoud" with rolling drums, spacey keys and fuzzy guitars that go heavy and cosmic, unlike the soaring and spiritual original – while the remaining all original numbers roll from lumberingly heavy to spaciously moody. The group is a quartet featuring Even Helte Hermansen on guitars, Tronde Frones on bass, Bernt Andre Moen on keys and Torstein Lofthus on drums, and titles include "13 Enemas For Good Luck", "Flew A Little Bullfinch Through The Window", "Focus On Insanity" and "You Don't Know, You Don't Know". Jamie SaftHidden Corners ... LP
Rare Noise (UK), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $23.99 25.98
Pianist Jamie Saft is building up a great name as a collaborator with older jazz musicians – really finding a way to unlock the best aspects, or "hidden corners", of their talents – and that's definitely the case here, in a very fluid quartet setting with the great Dave Liebman on tenor, soprano sax, and flute! As with other recent recordings, there's a spiritual current to Jamie's work on the piano that's really great – sometimes free, sometimes modal – given strong support from Bradley Christopher Jones on bass and Hamid Drake on drums – the latter of whom is amazingly at home on the session, which stands as just one more feather in his very mighty cap. Liebman sounds more soulful and expressive than we've heard in years – really giving his all to the performance – and titles include "Hidden Corners", "Turn At Every Moment", "Landrace", "The Anteroom", "231 Gates", "Seven Are Double", and "Positive Way". Jamie Saft/Steve Swallow/Bobby PreviteYou Don't Know The Life ... CD
Rare Noise (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Keyboardist Jamie Saft works here with a mighty great trio – one that features older giants Steve Swallow on electric bass and Bobby Previte on drums – all bringing a great sense of energy to Saft's own work on Hammond organ, Whitehall organ, and Baldwin electric harpsichord! The harpsichord alone is worth the price of admission – an instrument not often used in jazz (maybe by Jack Wilson or Hank Jones in the 60s) – and played here by Jamie with this chunky force that often creates some nice distortion around the edges. Yet the other keys are great, too – and Swallow and Previte provide wonderfully youthful accompaniment – really taking us back to their sounds and styles of the 80s, as if nothing has changed at all. One of the best moments we've ever heard from Saft on record – with titles that include "Dark Squares", "Water From Breath", "The Break Of The Flat Land", "Stable Manifold", "Ode To A Green Frisbee", and "Re Person I Knew". Cuong Vu 4TetChange Into The Air ... CD
Rare Noise (UK), 2018. Used ... $9.99
Trumpeter Cuong Vu is in a mighty nice setting here – a quartet that features very strong contributions from guitarist Bill Frisell, who almost feels like the leader of the date at times! Vu's got this rich, round tone that's a nice contrast to the chromatic qualities of Frisell – who plays here at his most famous and familiar – and the group also features Luke Bergman on bass, and additional guitars on one track – and Ted Poor on drums, and Fender Rhodes on another track. There's a majesty to Vu's horn that we really like – stepping out in front of the colors to give things direction – and titles include "Alive", "Long Ago", "Far From Here", "Round & Round", "Lately", and "Must Concentrate". ✨✧ Charles EarlandFreakin' Off ... LP
Big Chance, Late 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A rare live set from Charles Earland – recorded pre-Prestige, and probably illegally, by Paul Winley. The sound of the set has plenty of crowd noise up front – not necessarily from bad recording, but from an approach that seems to create this "live lounge" kind of feel, one that lets you hear folks talking, clapping, and having a good night out, just as you'd hear if you were sitting in front of the bandstand with Charlie and combo! Tracks are short and groovy, with a number of good originals like "Freakin' Off" (parts 1 & 2), "Yeah Sir", and "One For Lee". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kath1 (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Lion, 1974. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
One of those amazing obscure records that seems to come out of nowhere – sounding nothing like most of the mainstream work of the time, with a power that might have shaped the world of music for years to come – if the album hadn't been issued in a tiny pressing of only 60 copies! There's a darkness here that's mindblowing – not just in the vocals, and the weird echoey way they've been recorded – but also in the overall instrumentation and pacing of the record – kind of a melancholy, slow progression that almost prefaces 80s styles on 4AD, but with a much rougher feel overall! Any psyche impulses are broken down into much sparer, earthier sounds – and there seems to be a bit of electronics in the mix – or is it just noise from the guitar? Yet lyrical themes are up-close and personal too – almost chance-taking in their earnestness, without the somberness of the instrumentation. All of this makes for a sublime mix – and a record that's as captivating as it is rare. Titles include "Lonely Again", "I Want To Love You", "Goodbye Sunshine", "Candleman", and "Seagulls" – and 2CD set features a whopping 23 bonus tracks – a huge amount of unreleased material, and a few other singles by the group. ✨✧ Fifty Foot HoseBad Trips (gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Modern Harmonic, 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare second serving of material from one of the most unusual groups of the 60s – the legendary Fifty Foot Hose, a group who only issued the amazing Cauldron album back in the day – but who've gone on to have an impact on worlds of psych, electronics, and even hip hop for years to come! The group are heavy on analogue electronics, which are mixed with lots of psychedelic instrumentation – sometimes in a way that almost verges on the sorts of noise that we wouldn't hear until many years later, in the earliest moments of the UK industrial scene. Yet they're also a hell of a rock band too, and never get too lost in their experiments to come back to a strong focus in the lead – as you'll hear here on some pre Cauldron sessions recorded all around the Bay Area, mostly at different homes. Titles include "Red The Sign Post (alt version)", "Good Morning Girl", "Skins", "Desire", "Fly Free", "Bad Trip (33 1/3 version)", and "If Not This Time (alt version)". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ LoveForever Changes (50th anniversary edition – 4CD/DVD/LP set) ... CD
Elektra, 1967. New Copy 4CD, DVD & LP set ... Out Of Stock
What can we say? This is one of the greatest albums of all time! The record's got a sound that's completely unique – as crack LA garage punk rock meets Hollywood baroque production, and the result is an amazing bit of loud guitar noise backed by strings and horns, all graced by the godlike vocals of the great Arthur Lee. Forever Changes is a milestone in rock – an incredibly bleak document about insanity, escape, and the coming revolution that never happened. Think of all the best moments of Wild In The Streets, Zabriske Point, and Invocation of My Demon Brother rolled into one – and you'll only have a tiny slice of the picture! A record that will haunt us until the day we die – filled with incredible songs like "Alone Again Or", "Old Man", "Daily Planet", "Red Telephone", and "Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark & Hilldale". This fantastic package is the most comprehensive we've ever seen of the album – one that maybe even outdoes efforts like this for records by The Beach Boys or Velvet Underground! CD1 features the album in stereo, CD 2 features the album in mono, CD 3 features an obscure alternate mix, and CD4 features singles and outtakes – including "Wonder People (outtake)", "Alone Again Or (mono single)", "Laughing Stock", "Your Mind & We Belong Together (tracking session highlights)", "Wooly Bully (outtake)", "Hummingbirds (demo)", "A House Is Not A Motel (single)", "Red Telephone (tracking session)", "Live & Let Live (backing track)", "Andmoreagain (alt electric backing track)", and "A House is Not A Motel (backing track)". Also comes with a DVD that features 24/96 remaster of the album – and a rare promo film from 1968! Also includes the album on 180 gram vinyl. And includes a booklet with liner notes, including track by track notes by author Ted Olson. CD
(50th anniversary numbered limited edition pressing!)
