✨✧ VariousBoombox – Early Independent Hip Hop, Electro, & Disco Rap 1979 to 1982 ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $34.99 36.99
Great cuts from the old school – pulled together from the earliest days of hip hop – at a time when the boundary lines in the music weren't so fully formed! These days, the difference between hip hop and club cuts is huge – but back in the South Bronx scene at the start, there was a lot more interplay between styles – as 70s funk served as the blueprint, disco singles expanded the format, soul vocals gave some structure, and live rhymes and DJ work provided all of the spontaneous elements that made the music so unique – coming together with amazing energy that really reflected the street-level sounds of the New York scene! This ultra-hip collection brings together all those amazing strands from the early years – in a set that's one of the best historically important Soul Jazz titles we've seen in years – from the excellent track selection right down to the very detailed notes. There's plenty of rare cuts here you're not likely to have in your collection – and titles include "Body Rock" by Neil B, "Positive Life" by Love Bug Starski & The Harlem World Crew, "At The Place To Be" by Mr Sweety G, "New Rap Language" by Spoonie G & The Treacherous Three, "We Are People Too" by Master Jay, "Equidity Funk" by Mistafide, "And You Know That" by TJ Swan, "Searching Rap" by Bon Rock & The Rhythm Rebellion, "Willie Rap" by Willie Wood & The Willie Wood Crew, "Rhythm Rap Rock" by Count Coolout, "On The Go" by Black Bird & Kevski, "Philosophy Rappin Spree" by Super 3, "Move Your Body" by Bramsam, and "One More Time" by Sugar Daddy. Kweku CollinsNat Love ... LP
Closed Sessions, 2016. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Distinctive, bedroom studio-made hip hop from Kweku Collins – doing his own thing in both style and practice – and delivering one of the best independent hip hop records of the mid teens! There's a lot of layers here you could pick apart, and find something brilliant in each one. In the vocals realm he rhymes, sings, and speaks his mind in a raw, poetic, purely introspective way. On the production front you can feel he deeply he's absorbed myriad underground rap and soul styles over his still young life, but he filters it all through a unique, original lens all his own. We really get the feeling this is the dawn of a tremendous talent! Includes "Stupid Rose", "Vanilla Skies" feat Taylor Bennett, "Ego Killed Romance" feat Jamilla Woods, "Everever (Oasis1)", "Ghost", "Death Of A Salesman", "1:30 Curbside", "Outsiders", "The Last" and "The Rain That Wouldn't Save". Clay HammondCome Into These Arms Of Mine ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $22.99
An overlooked gem from the equally-overlooked Clay Hammond – a sweet 70s groover that offers up a great mix of modern and deep soul modes! Clay's vocals are still every bit as great as on some of his earlier soul singles, but the arrangements push things into tighter territory that's mighty nice – a lot like some of the later Hi Records work from Al Green – or even better, like that great sound that Otis Clay hit at the end of the 70s! Like Otis Clay's best records from the time, Clay's vocals stay nice and real – wrapped up in a sweet mix of blues and soul – and although the backings often hit a warmer midtempo groove, they're never overdone or commercial at all – just a maturation of southern soul modes – in ways that kind of point towards the later Malaco scene, while avoiding any of its cliches. Titles include "Tuning Up", "Rap On Wood", "Don't Stop Your Love", "Come Into These Arms Of Love", "Part Time Love", "Love Won't Let Me Stay Away From You", and "Women Are Human". CD

Camille YarbroughIron Pot Cooker ... CD
Vanguard/Ace (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $8.99 14.98
One of THE spoken word classics of the 70s funk years – an amazing album based around the poetry of Camille Yarbrough – set to some amazing funky backings! The sound here is incredibly righteous – almost a more sophisticated version of Betty Davis – done with a stark, spare groove that makes the bass bits and drums really come out in the mix! Camille's got a heck of a lot of personal vision, and really works the album together as a whole – making for a set that's far more than just "poetry plus music" – and instead an audio tapestry with an incredibly deep sound! Includes a heavy rap on the streets that culminates in the great "Little Sally the Super Sex Star" – plus the classic "Take Yo Praise", which was sampled famously by Fatboy Slim – and the cuts "Can I Get A Witness" and "All Hid". Wax Poetics, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful issue of Wax Poetics, and one that reminds us just what made the magazine so great in the first place – the wonderful way it combines writing and image, past and present – so that all the music we've always loved resonates even more strongly within its pages, and gets the kind of careful treatment that even the mainstream music press never gave it back in the day! This issue begins with a great assortment of record covers, laid out as a diagram to showcase the roots of the Digable Planets album Reachin – before moving into other, equally well-illustrated articles on The System, Raymond Scott, James Mason, Novos Baianos, Cerrone, Rap A Lot Records, Susaye Greene, and Frank White – all presented in the lavish, thoughtful Wax Poetics mode. A heavy, hefty issue – over 130 pages, with very few ads, on heavy paper, and full color! Magazine

✨✧ Robert GlasperPhotograph ... LP
Back Lot, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful record from pianist Robert Glasper – and a set that shows us another side of his many, mighty talents! The album's a soundtrack, but it also has a vibe that makes it feel like another page in the rich book of jazz offerings from Glasper –especially since many tracks focus on his piano in the lead, and have this back to basics acoustic approach that's a bit different than some of his Black Radio projects. Yet there's still a touch of energy from that side of Glasper's world – as the set features a few vocal moments – "Fade Away" by Lucky Dave, "Comfortable" by HER, and a nice remake of the Squeeze tune "Tempted" by Erykah Badu and James Poyser – amidst instrumentals by Glasper that include "The Wake", "Michael Helps Mae", "Dark Room", "Alarms", "Violet's Kitchen", "After The Storm", "London", and "Christina Leaves". Stunning work from the glory days of the 50s horror comic – issues of the legendary publication Adventures Into The Unknown – one of the first and most important comics to plumb the depths of supernatural and science fiction! ArtisticsI Want You To Make My Life Over ... LP
Brunswick, 1969. Sealed ... $14.99
One of The Artistics' most beautiful albums for Brunswick – and the one that includes the title song that was perhaps their greatest single! "I Want You To Make My Life Over" is a classic bit of Chicago soul – done at a level that really sums up all the sophisticated changes the city had brought to the music at the start of the 70s – and served up with cool vibes, great vocals, and a heavenly production style that wraps up the harmonies tightly together, and floats them over the top with nary a wrinkle! That cut kicks off the album, and things only just get better and better – on titles that include "Just Another Heartache", "Nothing But Heartaches", and "Trouble Heartache & Pain" (hey, these guys had a lot of heartache!) – plus "Out In The Country", "Sugar Cane", and "What The World Needs Now". BandIslands ... CD
Capitol, Late 70s. Used ... $4.99
A truly underappreciated later album from The Band, made after they decided to hang it up as a touring act – one that holds up SO much better than it's given credit for, by thier die hard fans and even The Band itself – but it works for us! The Band's most legendary first couple of records were the product of a longtime road tested group of deeply invested craftsmen, working together in a beautifully intuitive way. By this point, they are well known to have been looking for an exit strategy – and while Islands is a strong batch of songs, masterfully played and soulfully sung – it's genuine charms get lost in the lore. It's a breezier, easier going affair than their more rawly passionate records, but it's an overlooked gem. Includes "Right As Rain", "Street Walker", "Ain't That A Lot Of Love", "Islands", "The Saga Of Pepote Rouge", "Knockin' Lost John", "Living In A Dream" and their sweet little take on "Georgia On My Mind", with Richard Manuel on lead vocals for a change, given this beauty of a pop standard a gruff edge that works wonderfully well. An incredibly dense book on the psychedelic scene of the 60s – a huge volume that not only looks at an impressive array of music, but also the wider trippy culture, too – but all with a level of text that goes far beyond most of the thinner volumes on the period! Many of the chapter titles refer to key musical texts, but then quickly extrapolate from those moments – soaring out from "I Am The Blackgold Of The Sun", "The Greta Garbo Home For Wayward Boys & Girls", and "Painting With Light" – and looking at psychedelia on both sides of the Atlantic in the 60s, with lots of surprising insights along the way. Despite a very vivid cover, the book itself is all text, no images – a hefty 638 pages, hardcover, and a very deep read! Book

Maybe the crowning moment of genus from the great Neneh Cherry – a record that's a huge evolution from her post punk funk of just a few short years before – and one that really helped her bridge the Atlantic and find a huge following over here at the time! There's a great mix of hip hop inspiration and electro soul styles going on here – but also fused with the chunkier modes that were coming out of the UK soul scene right at the end of the 80s – maybe a new love of the depth of classic soul, which is used to really amplify the spirit of the great lyrics that Neneh delivers throughout. Titles include the megahit "Buffalo Stance" – plus "Manchild", "Kisses On The Wind", "Inner City Mama", "Heart", "The Next Generation", "So Here I Come", "Outre Risque Locomotive", and "Love Ghetto". Stanley CrouchKansas City Lightning – The Rise & Times Of Charlie Parker ... Book
Harper Perennial, 2013. New Copy ... $4.99 16.99
The story of Charlie Parker is often draped in hyperbole and exaggeration – which is why it's extra great that this biography is handled by Stanley Crouch – one of the few writers we could trust to get past the hype and really find a way to link Parker's life and music! As you might guess from the title, the book spends a lot of time looking at Bird's early years in Kansas City – and draws a great portrait of that vivid environment in the years between the wars, which is almost as enthralling as the information on Parker himself. Crouch writes with a great sense of story, as well – and he holds us rapt throughout, going way past any of the over-told tales from later years. 365 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. This one has been underappreciated for years, which is a shame, because it's got a lot of very nice grooves with that tight Joe Cuba Sextet sound – full snapping percussion and tight rhythms. Jazzy sounds from a really heavy Czech group of the early 70s – maybe one of the hardest-hitting combos to play for the mighty Supraphon label! As with contemporary Supraphon jazz acts, there's a definite ear for some of the more electrified fusion styles of the period – but these guys are also equally a rock group too – less long-winded than some of their prog contemporaries, and graced with really strong lead vocals at the front – which are a perfect fit for the fuzzier guitar licks that crop up from time to time! But that's not the main focus, either – as there's lots of great instrumentation on tenor, flute, and soprano sax – really opening up with some nice edges in ways that are very different than more familiar jazz rock styles. Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99
A surprisingly huge amount of recordings from Fumble – a UK group who started out during the big Brit rock explosion of the mid 60s, then went on to become a strong rock revival act in the 70s! The package begins with early singles and other material – including cuts issued as Four Iveys – then quickly moves into a range of albums that have the group reworking older rock tunes with some of that cool, compressed British production style of the time – but mostly keeping things lean and simple, with most instrumentation by the core quartet. The group bring plenty of their own songs into play, while also calling up older classics – almost proto pub-rock at times, and given some great Shel Talmy production on some of the best tracks. The set features the full albums Fumble, Poetry In Lotion, Rumble With Fumble, and It's Only A Rock N Roll Game – plus a huge amount of other bonus singles, and even cuts from the Elvis Original Cast album! 92 tracks in all – and a huge booklet of notes. Bob Gordon/Clifford BrownArranged By Montrose (Meet Mr Gordon/Clifford Brown Ensemble With Zoot Sims) ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1954. Very Good- ... $24.99
A great split LP – featuring 2 sessions both arranged by Jack Montrose! First up is Meet Mr Gordon –brilliant work by one of our favorite talents of 50s west coast jazz! Bob Gordon was a baritone player, but one who really knew how to swing – and he worked in a style that was somewhere between Gerry Mulligan and Gil Melle, slightly modern, but never too out there – always sticking to essential rhythms, but wrapping all the horns together in a wonderfully compelling way. A bit part of his sound was the work of tenorist Jack Montrose – who plays on this album, and also contributed arrangements to the set. Montrose's tone is great – a bit raspy, and quite soulful – and together, him and Gordon are a hell of a pair who should have risen a lot farther than they did! Titles include "For Sue", "Onion Bottom", and "Love Is Here To Stay". Side 2 features seminal west coast recordings by Clifford Brown – material that was re-packaged countless times after his death, but is presented here in the original 10" format! The sides were recorded in LA in 1954, with a mixture of hard bop and lyricism, in that sparkling mode that Brownie left as his indelible imprint on the west coast scene of the 50s! Players include Bob Gordon on baritone, Stu Williamson on trombone, Zoot Sims on tenor, and Russ Freeman on piano – and Jack Montrose arranged the set. Titles include "Tiny Capers", "Joy Spring", and "Daahoud". LP, Vinyl record album

A huge amount of material from Tommy James & The Shondells – a group that most people know for a string of jingle-jangle gems in the 60s, but who kept on making some really wonderful music over the course of the 11 albums included in this set! The group at the start were already pretty darn amazing – able to create the kind of catchy, groovy tunes that really exploded out of AM radio in the mid 60s – but as the years went on, Tommy moved into headier territory, and started to stretch out from the pop psych sound of "Crimson & Clover" – one of his last great hits, but also the gateway to all the wonderful music heard here in the second half of the set! The collection is a real ear-opener – and includes lots of music that hasn't been on CD in any form for years (or vinyl for that matter too!) – plus bonus tracks on most of the records, and other rare material – all bundled up with a heavy booklet of notes. 140 tracks in all – and the albums Hanky Panky, It's Only Love, I Think We're Alone Now, Gettin Together, Mony Mony, Crimson & Clover, Cellophane Symphony, Travelin, Tommy James, Christian Of The World, My Head My Bed & My Red Guitar – and bonus tracks and singles too! JulyJuly – The Complete Recordings (July/Second Of July/Temporal Anomaly/Resurrection/The Wight Album/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/2020. New Copy 6CD ... $38.99
The complete recordings of July – a set that features their rare original album, unreleased tracks, and lots of surprisingly great later material too! First up is the self-titled July album from 1968, presented in both mono and stereo mixes – the debut album from July – a group who only gave the world this gem of a record back at the end of the 60s – but who've gone on to become legendary, based on the strength of the set! The whole thing is a real standout in the psych scene of the UK – well-crafted songs that are tight, but groovy and loose at the same time – tuneful, but filled with experiments – and produced with just the right sort of inventive qualities to make the special flourishes and individual moments of genius really come to light! There's so many great things going on here – an all-rich, no-filler record that's filled with gems that include "My Clown", "Dandelion Seeds", "Jolly Mary", "Hallo To Me", "You Missed It All", "The Way", "To Be Free", "Crying Is For Writers", "I See", and "A Bird Lived". Next is Second Of July – a great counterpart to the legendary self-titled album from July – material recorded in a private setting, to predate that psych masterpiece – but every bit as stunning overall! The quality of this work goes way beyond its origins as demo material – as the sound is wonderful, the musical ideas very rich, and overall psychedelic conception is amazing! There's no overindulgence, but also no easy pop psych modes either – and it's really incredible how much these guys can pack into a short song – from unusual guitar lines, to freewheeling rhythms, and trippy ideas in the lyrics. Many numbers have a sweet groove underneath, and are slightly freakbeatish – but there's also a much more unique feel to the record as well. Tracks include "Dandelion Seeds", "You Missed It All", "My Clown", "Friendly Man", "I See", "The Girl In The Cafe", and "Move On Sweet Flower". The box set then moves into two later albums from a re-formed group – Temporal Anomaly and Resurrection – both of which feature material conceived over a number of years, issued on Resurrection in 2013, and on Temporal Anomaly here for the first time ever. Tracks are great – still very much in the spirit of the classic material, and produced with a nicely understated vibe. Last up is The Wight Album – a recent project from July – still sounding surprisingly great after all these years! At this point, the group is a duo – original members Peter Cook and Tom Newman – but they really manage to craft some great sounds here, with a style that ties back to their initial recording in 1968, and which features some of the successful flourishes of their revived activity from about a decade ago! The tunes are way better than any sort of younger attempt at material like this – mostly because there's a nicely understated, although still quite psychedelic, approach to the whole thing – maybe a reminder that with the best psych records, charm is every bit as important as fuzz. Titles on the double-length set include "The Traveler", "Sophie", "Special Guy", "Henry's Squirrel", "Seeking The Hacksaw Blades", "The Game", "What's Gonna Be", "Disco Klingon", "Mods Of Ryde", "It's Up To Me", and "Once When We Was Free". William Klein/David CompnayWilliam Klein – ABC (hardcover) ... Book
Abrams, 2012. New Copy ... $11.99 40.00
A lavish examination of the work of William Klein – an important postwar photographer who moved into the worlds of film and graphics in the 60s – and left an indelible imprint on both the scenes in New York and Paris! The book offers up Klein's work in a few different slices – some relatively straight early black and white photographs, which are exceptional – then some shots in Tokyo, and a lot more in Paris – which get increasingly wilder as the 60s move on, and which lead up to a section on his films – including the classic Qui Est Vous Polly Magoo, and Mister Freedom, which also featured Serge Gainsbourg! There's other later work too – and the book is a mixture of black and white and color photos, printed on heavy paper – 182 pages, hardcover, and oversized. Book

James MasonRhythm Of Life ... CD
Soul Brother/Expansion/Chiaroscuro, 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
One of our favorite albums ever – and every track is a masterpiece! The album was originally cut for the tiny Chiaroscuro label in 1977 – and it's got a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – soaring, soulful, jazzy, and righteous – wrapped up in a blend that's never been done this perfectly again! James Mason's a player who's know for a bit of keyboard work with other artists – but here, he's really working as a collective power – bringing together a brilliant ensemble that work as one to hit some sublime sounds – much in the way that Roy Ayers could work some key magic with his groups at the same time, but with a vibe that's very different too. Players include Ayers associates Justo Almario on saxes and Philip Woo on piano – and a young Narada Michael Walden adds some excellent drums to the record – a lot more powerful and funky than on most of his own albums! Lead vocals are by Clarice Taylor – who's got this unique voice that really makes the record – proud, but sensitive at the same time too – and Mason plays lots of Fender Rhodes, polymoog, Arp, and a bit of guitar. Titles include the breakbeat classic "Funny Girl", the monster groover "Sweet Power Your Embrace", the funky "Slick City", and the massive "Free" – but every cut's a winner, and others include "Mbewe", "Rhythm Of Life", and "Dreams". This is the kind of album that makes us proud to be in business! CD

MaxwellBlack SUMMERS' Night (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Columbia, 2016. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
It's taken us a bit longer than expected to get this second installment in Maxwell's Black Summers' Night series – but it's been well worth the wait, given the greater depth in the music! All that we love about Maxwell's previous records is alive and well here – but there's also kind of a sharper edge to the sound, too – these fuller bottom currents that almost seem to be adding a second sort of instrumental commentary, alongside the lyrical activity up top – all while the whole thing is wrapped together with that warm keyboard flow that first made Maxwell stand out so many years back! There's almost this double edge to the whole thing – rough with the smooth, or turmoil under peace – which gives the whole thing a lot more power than this sort of record from some of Maxwell's contemporaries. Score another win for the mighty one – on tracks that include "The Fall", "Lake By The Ocean", "Lost", "Gods", "Fingers Crossed", "Hostage", "1990x", and "All The Ways Love Can Feel". Nick Mazzarella TrioUltraviolet ... CD
International Anthem, 2015. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
The strongest album to date from Chicago saxophonist Nick Mazzarella – a trio set that has the leader's alto blazing out in brilliantly soulful spirit, alongside robust bass from Anton Hatwich and magical drums from Frank Rosaly! The group have a cohesion that we might not have expected from the players a handful of years before – a sense of unity that's extremely dramatic, and which grabs our ears right from the start of the record – insisting that we listen with rapt attention, almost as if they're announcing the set as a new classic in jazz. All compositions are by Mazzarella, and although there's a lot of freedom in the playing, there's also an adhesion to his musical vision too – that wonderful balance of structure and openness that can really separate a record like this from the rest of the pack. Titles include "Neutron Star", "Luminous Dials", "Ultraviolet", "Fossil", and "Outlier". CD

Atlantic, 1960. Used ... $4.99
A searing live set by Charles Mingus – a double-length performance recorded in Antibes during his classic years for Atlantic Records, but not issued by the label until many years later! The album's a great extrapolation of the sound that Mingus had forged on sessions for Columbia, Atlantic, and Candid – the latter label especially, as the tunes here are all quite long, and really put a lot of emphasis on the solo voices of the players in the group. Given that those players include Ted Curson on trumpet, Booker Ervin on tenor, and Eric Dolphy on alto sax, the sound here is proud and loud throughout – with plenty of fire from all three horns! Bud Powell makes a guest appearance on the set – and titles include "Prayer For Passive Resistance", "What Love", "I'll Remember April", "Folk Forms 1", and "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting". CD

Czech singer Marie Rotrova joins the instrumental group Plamenaci (aka Flamingo) for this really great set from the mid 70s – a jazz rock gem to match some of the grooviest work from the UK scene from a few years before! Instrumentation in the group is great – lots of strong work on saxes and flute, plus sharp lead guitar and organ mixed with a bit of added keyboards too – topped with vocals on most tracks, but still given more than enough room for the group to do their thing from an instrumental standpoint – which is often a nice approach to funky fusion, ala some of the best of the Eastern Bloc scene of the time! Titles include "Dvojite Salto", "Cas Motylu", "Quasimodo", "Malovana Kapela", "Lasky Zen", and "Posledni Okamzik". CD features two bonus tracks – "Zlom Vaz" and "Modre Oci Mladi". CD

A really beautiful little set of tracks – music composed to accompany vintage porn films from the 70s – played to perfection by the great Alex Puddu! The story behind the project is great – a friend was involved in rescuing and issuing rare porn from the underground – most of which no longer had any sort of soundtrack. Puddu was called in because of his skills with vintage-styled grooves – and stepped up perfectly with the sweet instrumentals you'll hear in this wet – tracks that are heavy on sweet keyboards, slinky basslines, and funky guitars – often served up with tighter, funkier styles than you'd hear in the original films – even though the overall sound is still very vintage. Raphael SebbagFrom El Fantasma De La Libertad ... CD
Power Shovel (Japan), 2006. Used ... $1.99
A beautiful new chapter in the career of Raphael Sebbag – work that's quite different than the grooves he first did in United Future Organization, and a lot more organic as well! There's a fair bit of Latin style running through the set – but not in a hokey way, and more in a complicated blend of percussion, sound samples, and larger orchestrations! The whole thing's extremely evocative – really fitting the "fantasy" in the title, and filled with a wealth of cultural references that Raphael always brought to his work with UFO, but never this fully. Some tracks here are remixed by Zero Db, Yuichiro Fujimoto, Killer Bong, and others – with very different versions of similar tunes working together as a long suite of tracks. Titles include "Besos", "His Majesty", "El Fantasma De La Libertad", "His Majesty (street play rmx)", "Besos (dub)", "El Fantasma De La Libertad (Juju rmx)", and "His Majesty (instrumental)". CD

Guerra Company/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99
Killer Latin funk from the mid 70s – a totally rare little set, but a masterpiece all the way through! Sol is a combo headed up by keyboardist Joe Gallardo – and they've got a groove that blends together some wonderful elements – including jazz funk, straight Latin, and a bit of Chicano soul – all wrapped up in a warm, west coast sort of vibe that's totally great! In a way, the album almost feels like some lost treasure from Fantasy Records' best funky years – but it's also got a more unique feel overall, and a way of changing up the groove that keeps things fresh throughout. Lead vocals are by Ray Romero, who sings in English, and almost echoes Mark Murphy's style on Muse – and other instrumentation includes guitar, flute, saxes, trumpet, and lots of Latin percussion. Titles include the cut "Maranatha", a very nice groover – plus a version of Ray Barretto's "El Que Se Fue", Stevie Wonder's "Bird Of Beauty", and the original cuts "Sailing", "Patrice", "Someday", and "Squeeze". Lilly TchiumbaAngola – Songs Of My People ... CD
Monitor, 1975. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really unique little record – an album of original songs based on older tradition, and one that interweaves elements of Portuguese culture with deeper roots of Angolan music! Lilly Tchiumba penned all the tracks herself, and sings in the Angolan language of Kimbundu – but there's a mix of percussion, guitar, and soaring vocals that echoes strongly with rootsier Brazilian, Cuban, and Haitian styles too – maybe in part because the Monitor label did such a wonderful job of recording the songs, and giving them this righteous, powerful vibe that still holds up strongly over the years! And by all of that, we almost mean that there's this sort of trans-global power to the whole record – one that moves beyond just a regional expression of culture, and past any sort of basic ethnographic mode – a lot like the Songs Of Protest album by Zelia Barbosa, also on the Monitor label. Titles include "Manazinha", "Gilagi Bu Kanga", "N'Zambi", "Mona Ki N'Gui Xissa", "Luanda M'Bolo", and "Kubata Di Rosinha". CD

Grapefruit (UK), 1967. New Copy ... $12.99
Ok, so Van Morrison's left your group – what do you do? The remaining members of the group split off into two factions, the raunchier of which, the Belfast Gypsies, hooked up with Kim Fowley! This set documents the great work of that post-Morrison Them sidegroup – and most tracks were done in the company of Fowley, with a raw and raunchy sound that's a lot like Fowley's own best rock work of the time. The style's different from other Them work – but not so much so that it doesn't make for a nice extension of the "Gloria" sound – that raw, romping, rhythm heavy vibe of the combo – maybe even more focused at the core without Van Morrison on vocals. Titles include "Hey Gyp (Dig The Slowness)", "Suicide Song", "Secret Police", "People Let's Freak Out", and "Gloria's Dream". Plus, this set adds in lots of bonus tracks – including "I Want You", "People Let's Freak Out (single)", "The Gorilla", "Midnight Train", "It's All Over Now Baby Blue", "Secret Police (single)", and "Gloria's Dream (single)". The debut album of Trapeze – a great little group that's maybe best known as the early home of Glenn Hughes, but who have plenty to offer on their own! Production is by John Lodge, of the Moody Blues – a strong supporter of the group at their start – but the sound is very different than his own work – sometimes with harmonies that almost have the group coming across in heavier territory than the earlier Bee Gees, sometimes with hints of the hard rock elements that Hughes would bring to later music. Drummer Dave Holland provides excellent work on the set – and titles include "The Giant's Dead Hoorah", "Over", "Nancy Gray", "It's Only A Dream", "Suicide", "Send Me No Letters", and "It's My Life". The final album from Trapeze – and a set that has them stepping out as a super-heavy trio who should have been huge! Glenn Hughes handles bass and all the lead vocals – with the best qualities he would soon bring to Deep Purple – and the drums from David Holland are fantastic – full of all the right sort of power and drive to make the lean lineup work so well! Guitarist Mel Galley has really grown a lot since the start – and turns out some solos and leads here that should have made him one of the bigger acts of the growing hard rock generation from the UK – save for the fact that he's also got a wonderful ear for more sensitive moments, which makes this record far more deep than just a standard rocker. Titles include "Loser", "You Are The Music", "Way Back To The Bone", "Keepin Time", "Coast To Coast", "Will Our Love End", and "Feelin So Much Better Now". CD2 features bonus tracks – a mono version of "Coast To Coast", and the tracks "Good Love" and "Dat's It" – plus a Radio 1 concert in 1973 – and live tracks recorded in Dallas and Houston. Pye/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
A huge package – four full albums by this excellent soul group – plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Hand Clappin Foot Stompin Funky Butt Live – filled with sockin soul from Geno Washington – an ex-American marine who recorded to big fame in the UK in the late 60s – working with the legendary Ram Jam Band, an act that rivaled some of the best American combos of the southern party circuit at the time! The approach here is certainly soul-based, but it's also something different – given the actual overseas origin of the recording – and in a way, the record's a perfect example of the influence that African-American military had in Europe in the 60s – as their presence on the continent really helped to shape and authenticate the sounds of some already-willing overseas combos. Geno's vocals are great, and the tracks are all upbeat and lively – very much what you'd expect from the title! Titles include "Philly Dog", "Ride Your Pony", "Road Runner", "Up Tight", "Land Of 1000 Dance", "Que Sera Sera", "Get Down With It", and "Willy Nilly". Shake A Tail Feather is a hard-smoking album that bears all the best 60s hallmarks of Geno Washington and his Ram Jam Band! The album's not as much a live effort as the previous two, but still keeps all the best spontaneous qualities in the music – a feel that really makes you think that Washington and the band were just partying in the studio, rattling the tunes off as they came to them – with all the confidence and swagger earned from a never-ending stream of gigs in the UK! Titles include "Raise Your Hand", "You Got Me Hummin", "Tell It Like It Is", "Use Me", "Understanding", "Knock On Wood", "I'm Your Puppet", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Hold On To My Love". CD also features 7 more bonus tracks – including "Seven Eleven", "Alison Please", "Each & Every Part Of Me", "Give Em A Hand", and "Dirty Dirty". Next is Hipsters Flipsters Finger Poppin Daddies – a bit of soul, a bit of R&B, a bit of beat group grooving – all wrapped up in a classic 60s set from Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band! Geno's American roots are inflected and appreciated strongly here – not just by the Ram Jam combo, who groove things up with plenty of influences from Atlantic and Sue Records – but also by the audience, who seem to go even more crazy for Geno than the crowds at the Apollo did for James Brown! Washington's vocals are somewhat rough and raspy – perhaps not the instant hit sort of sound for the US market, but a perfect fit for the rougher-edged grooves going on here – partyful soul that's never too poised, and which features lots of covers of 60s classics throughout. Titles include "Herk's Works", "Day Tripper", "I Can't Turn You Loose", "Shotgun", "Raise Your Hand", "Who's Foolin Who", "It's A Wonder", and "Wild Thing". Last up is one more live album – Runnin Wild – with 11 more tracks that include "Rock Me Baby (parts 1 & 2)", "High Heel Sneakers/Mary Ann", "Knock On Wood", "I Take What I Want", "Gimme A Little Sign/Raise Your Hand", "I Got You Babe", and "I Get So Excited". The hippest funky jazz from the start of the 70s – music that takes all the pride, power, triumph, and challenge of the 60s – and focuses into a bold new energy for a young generation! Weird work from the Wicker Man generation – that moment in British music where it often seemed like the spookiest sounds could come from the past – as you'll hear here in a huge batch of music from the acid folk revival years! Instrumentation on these tracks is mostly acoustic, but basslines and guitar parts can sometimes be electric – and both arrangements and production amplify some of the elements of the tunes in ways that really bring out eerie currents, even when the lyrics might seem more innocent! There's lots of music here we'd never heard before, mixed with surprising contributions from bigger names, all wrapped together with the genius ear for song selection that always makes these collections from the Grapefruit label so great. Impulse/MCA, 1980. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's a lot of great chromatic elements going on here – thanks to the work of John Scofield on guitar, who's at that key point where he could effortlessly balance melody and tone with these edges that are sharp, but also very spacious – kind of a wide style that really reaches out and wraps up the rest of the players in the group! Not that the record's one of John's as a leader, because the real driving force here is David Liebman on tenor and soprano sax – but he also seems to let Scofield set the tone at many times – which opens up work from the rest of the players, who include Terumasa Hino on trumpet, Ron McClure on bass, and Adam Nussbaum on drums. This approach makes the record a lot less arch than some of Liebman's other material from the time – and titles include "Reunion", "Moontide", "Move On Some", "Autumn In New York", "If They Only Knew", and "Capitstrano". The set's billed as a "phonograph opera", written by Tupper Saussy – and it's served up with these fantastic arrangements that are ambitious, but nicely handled, too – with lots of groovy currents that keep the whole thing far from soppier territory of cats like Rod McKuen, and always done with that great sense of wit that makes this Warner era so great! There's definitely a few tuneful tracks that could spin as Sunshine Pop hits – but the whole thing's really better taken as a whole, as the way everything comes together with a sense of mood and tone is completely sublime – really a lost aesthetic, and one that deserves new discovery all these many years later. Titles include "Morning Girl", "Brilliant Colors", "Little Sparrow", "The Last Time I Saw Jacqueline", "Cowboy", and "The New Life Out There". Next Is Neon Philharmonic – the second sublime album from Neon Philharmonic – and one that seems to go even deeper than the first in its blend of ambitious musical themes and mature lyrical ideas! The presentation here is even more symphonic than on the first record – but at a level that's never soppy or sleepy – as there's a gentle groove on most tracks, loping around in these really lovely modes that make the tunes sparkle and glisten with the best sort of late 60s Warner Brothers wit! There's this wonderful mix of longing, nostalgia, and a kind of new vision for post-60s adulthood to the record – very hard to describe, but completely wonderful – at once completely heartfelt, but also with a great sense of distance on itself. Titles include "Long John The Pirate", "Do You Remember Dresden", "You Lied", "Forever Hold Your Peace", "Harry", and the wonderful "F Scott Fitzgerald & William Shakespeare". The 22 bonus tracks are especially amazing – rare singles, b-sides, and even some radio spots too – a huge amount of added genius from this incredible group. Bonus titles include "Letters Crossing", "Jody", "Better Times", "A Little Love", "Flowers For Your Pillow", "Snow", "Clouds", "To Be Continued", and "Keep The Faith In Me". CD

A close-up view of Leonard Cohen during his 2009 worldwide tour – served up over the course of almost 200 photos taken by Sharon Robinson, who was embedded with Cohen during the tour, and had continual access to its process! These aren't the usual stage or backstage shots – although there's a few of those – but instead a really great range of images that capture every aspect of the tour at work – candids, art shots, portraits, and other photographs that present a very unconventional, but surprisingly realistic account of the journey. Cohen certainly gets his moments in the spotlight, but there's lots more to enjoy too – in a hardcover volume that is full color throughout. Book

Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD set ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A heavy little set that looks at the big rise of blues modes on the UK scene in the late 60s – but one that should be thought of more as the sound of rock in transition, rather than a lavish adherence to American blues modes! In fact, half of these groups are ones that you might not think of as blues-based at all – but who, like the Rolling Stones a few years before, drew heavy inspiration from the guitar giants in the US blues scene – yet quickly took their own music in very different directions, and even different than the Stones. There's a quality here that's almost more like a pre-progressive sound at times, but also an evolution from some of the R&B and soul that the mod scene were into too – and the whole thing captures a really exciting, really revolutionary time in British music – along with a big booklet of notes on all the many groups included. The set list is great – not big hits, but lots of overlooked gems – big groups mixed with smaller, forgotten acts – with 56 tracks by artists who include Icarus, Bloodwyn Pig, Killing Floor, Free, Zany Woodruff Operation, Ten Years After, Duster Bennett, The Deviants, Alexis Korner, Dr K's Blues Band, Mike Cooper, Sam Apple Pie, Black Cat Bones, Siren, Steamhammer, Liverpool Scene, Skid Row, Stack Waddy, Heavy Jelly, Jasper, Christine Perfect, Shakey Vick, Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Love Sculpture, and many others. Grapefruit (UK), 1966. New Copy 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from a real turning point in British music – a moment when the mod groups and singers of the year before were letting in a bit more freak and fuzz – yet all in ways that still kept the songs as short, tight, and tuneful as before! You might consider this work the big bang that set up a whole second generation of genius in the UK – the catchy sort of 45s that paved the way for longer jams on albums, progressive rock experimentation, mindbending psych, and even the hard rock modes that were just around the corner. You'll recognize a few of the names here as mid 60s mod heroes, but they're also mixed with some great lesser-knowns, all with the kind of deep dig that we love from these box sets on the Grapefruit label – right down to the massive booklet of notes that offers up track by track information on all the music. 84 tracks in all – with work by The Rockin Vickers, Yardbirds, Wimple Winch, John's Children, The Action, The Koobas, Fleur De Lys, The Favourite Sons, Keith Relf, The People, David Bowie, The Smoke, The Creation, Graham Bond Organization, Downliners Sect, The 5am Event, The Tomcats, The Majority, The In Crowd, Just Five, The Times, The Uglys, Outrage, and lots lots more! Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The hippest funky jazz from the start of the 70s – music that takes all the pride, power, triumph, and challenge of the 60s – and focuses into a bold new energy for a young generation! The work here draws equally from jazz and soul, with lots of other global influences coming into play as well – and together, the tracks present an amazing portrait of a generation moving past the initial Civil Rights struggle – building a new culture through righteous expressions like these! Nearly every track is a classic – and all the artists are ones we've supported for years on their own reissues – and together, the tracks sound wonderful, especially when given the full sort of Soul Jazz presentation with great notes and other details. Rhymesayers, 2003. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Atmosphere's signature sound full force – but also featuring some of their most experimental material to this point! Slug bounces along melodically, tortured and true to his nature, yet he comes off a little (just a little) more optimistic this time and he recites more than just tales of love lost. He STILL is at his tightest when weaving wonderful heart-wrenching stories instead of bragging, yet I don't think you hear the name Lucy once on this album. Sean Daley, the philosopher? – maybe we'll see more and more of that in the future. ANT's production is sounding much much better since God Loves Ugly – these beats pound just a little harder, seemingly influenced by punk and classic rock, thankfully without coming anywhere near classifiable rap rock. There still is a whole lotta soul in there, which is very nice, yet he still ain't afraid to pitch the formula, say sample some off kilter scatting or a ripping metal guitar. Tracks include "Bird Sings Why The Caged I Know", "Cats Van Bags", "National Disgrace", "Liquor Lyles Cool July". "Good Times", "Keys To Life Vs 15 Minutes Of Fame", "Reflections" and more. 2019 deluxe edition F Side bonus tracks: "Say Shh", "DMFD", "On The Battle Field", "Quiet Pimpin". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe not the first album from Childish Gambino, but a set that certainly showed the world that the hip hop side of Donald Glover was ready to overtake his role on screen! The album's rock-solid all the way through – as much a contemporary soul experiment as a hip hop masterpiece – and the expansive vision here shifts beautifully between high-minded concepts and tunes that are very down to earth – a balance that not only elevates the role of Glover/Gambino, but also the role of mainstream hip hop as well! ✨✧ OutkastIdlewild ... LP
LaFace/Zomba, 2006. New Copy 3LPs ... Out Of Stock
The new album from Outkast and the soundtrack to their film Idlewild! Outkast has been daring haters for years to pounce at will – and they really take that approach to the next level by making what is far and away their oddest project in midst of the most scrutiny they will probably ever receive. We're lacking a bit of perspective in that we haven't seen the movie – but the best stuff probably makes it worth picking up. Idlewild continues the tag team style of Speakerboxx/Love Below in that the duo rarely appear together on the same tracks. The single "Mighty O" is the most notable expection, in that both rappers do their thing on it – and 3000 is actually rapping! The rest of the album, surprisingly, has a fairly coherent flow – with little touches of the 1930s vibe and atmosphere ( the setting of the film) – as envisioned by forward looking hip hoppers. It's a daring set of tracks with strong moments – and lots of additional singing by Sleepy Brown and others. Tracks include "Mighty O", "Peaches" feat Sleepy Brown & Scar, "Idlewild Blue (Don'tchu Worry 'Bout Me", "N2U" feat Khujo Goodie, "Morris Brown" feat Scar & Sleepy Brown, "Chronomentrophobia", "The Train" feat Sleep Brown & Scar, "Life Is Like A Musical", "Hollywood Divorce" feat Lil' Wayne & Snoop Dogg, "Buggface", "PJ & Rooster", "Greatest Show On Earth" feat Macy Gray. Goldmine, 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An overstuffed edition of the Goldmine Jazz Price Guide – filled with great information! First off – forget the prices in this one, because we hate price guides, and we don't suggest that they actually have any correspondence to the real world – because people buy records at all different prices, for different reasons. HOWEVER, this is a great little book filled with useful data on jazz releases – and we find it to be an excellent resource when we need to look up details of work by specific artists – maybe more like a discography than an actual guide to pricing records. The book does have some holes and mistakes – but there's a heck of a lot of useful information in here, especially if you have questions like "What year did that come out?", "What label was that on?", "Which record was first in his career?" We're surprised at how many listings we can find for key albums – and the book's especially helpful for figuring out releases that seem to have a sly history of reappearing on the market! There's also a helpful section on different jazz labels and pressings, and the book is 506 pages, softcover, with lots of black and white illustrations – and listings for over 40,000 titles! Book

We love 50s horror comics – and we especially love Tomb Of Terror – as it's one of the excellent publications from Harvey Comics in the pre-code years – filled with lurid artwork and some incredibly chilling stories! Like some of the other Harvey horror of the period, there's a really unbridled feel to this material – a no holds barred approach that goes into the same ultra-creepy territory as EC Comics, and maybe even a bit beyond – as there's less of the wit of EC, and often hardly any sort of moral to the stories at all. Lots of this work is even creepier than the average horror movie of the time – and the book does a great job of presenting the material with full color reproductions on heavy white paper, wrapped up in a hardcover volume that's a lot easier to read than the ultra-valuable vintage comics themselves. Artwork in this volume is by Warren Kremer, Lee Elias, Abe Simon, Rudy Palais, Bob Powell, Howard Nostrand, John Giunta, and others – and stories include "Colony Of Horror", "Shadows Of Death", "The Eyeless Ones", "Big Joke", and "Communist". An explosive look at the mighty songwriting legacy of The Beatles – served up here in a giant 3CD package that features the group's famous songs covered by a whole group of their contemporaries on the UK scene! You'd think that most of these artists might be jealous, or resentful – not wanting to give a nod to the songwriting skills of Lennon, McCartney, or Harrison – but instead, they really revel in the tunes – often really transforming them, and completely making them their own – in ways that follow some of the best inspirations of the new psych generation, and which make the whole collection a lot better than just some straight rehash of hits by the fab four! The song selection is brilliant – dozens of tracks that we never would have heard otherwise – and as with all Grapefruit packages like this, the whole thing comes with a detailed booklet of notes on the music – way more information than you'd find even if you spent the whole day searching online. 68 tracks in all – with work from The Sorrows, Ice, The Spectrum, Real McCoy, The Eyes, Loose Ends, Rainbow Ffolly, Affinity, Yes, Blonde On Blonde, Spooky Tooth, Big Jim Sullivan, The Gods, Orange Bicycle, The Tremeloes, Jason Crest, Tomorrow, Circus, The Hollies, Camel, and many others! We've been living with the comics of Daniel Clowes for so many years, we sometimes forget how great he is – so fortunately, we've got this wonderful book to remind us of his genius all over again! Clowes is incredible – a comic stylist who's not only drunk deep of the best modes of the postwar giants, but also found a way to turn their aesthetic into a voice that's completely his own – never derivative at all, and always with a freshness that keeps things interesting over the decades! Most folks know him for Ghost World or some of his graphic novels – but this book goes way way back, and looks at his earliest work, his earlier Lloyd Lewellyn and Eightball magazines, and a wealth of other projects – with images from so many different strands of his creative life. Some of the hippest sounds we've ever heard from Guadeloupe – served up by Erick Cosaque – a singer, percussionist, and key figure in the gwo-ka genre – yet an artist who works in a special space that's all his own! The tunes here definitely have the heavy percussion of gwo-ka, but they also bring in plenty of elements of funk and soul – the latter from Erick's amazing vocal style, which has this really deep flow that's wrapped around a set of French and Creole lyrics, but which has amazing power even if you can't understand the language! There's lots of great elements on keyboards and electric bass, which further helps underscore the funkier part of the music – and the whole thing is the kind of wonderful blend we've always loved from the criss-crossing of cultures in Guadeloupe, but also in a mode that's head and shoulders above most of the rest. Fantagraphics, 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The continuing genius of Steve Ditko – served up here in a batch of obscure work for Charlton Comics at the end of the 50s – material that's hardly ever gotten any exposure outside of its initial release! Like the previous volume, the stories here are all shorter horror and sci fi pieces – work that's similar to some of the pre-hero material that Ditko would do at Marvel, but with a lot more freedom – freedom not just in his ability to lay out and design the pages, but also to work with a variety of scripts – which really makes for a freshness in the material! And sure, sometimes Charlton could throw Ditko a clunker of a script – but Steve always made magic on the page – that incredible sense of design and draftsmanship he would later bring to Spider-Man and Dr Strange, already pretty fully-formed at this point in his career! A beautifully-done volume – 226 pages, hardcover, and in full color. Book

Polydor/Floating World (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A trio of key albums from the Pink Fairies – served up with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Never Never Land – the fantastic debut of the Pink Fairies – easily one of the shaggiest, headiest bands on the UK scene at the start of the 70s – and a group who rose from the ashes of the equally important Deviants! The record's an unusual mishmash of modes – a set that confidently swaggers between psych, hard rock, and maybe even a bit of proto-punk – very confident in its approach, and coolly compressed in the production, but never in the slick style that would dominate British rock more strongly in the mid 70s. The Fairies aren't afraid to let their freak flag fly, but they're also clearly moving past hippiedom too – on titles that include "War Girl", "Do It", "Say You Love Me", "Tack One Side Two", "Thor", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout", and "The Dream Is Just Beginning". What A Bunch Of Sweeties is filled with freaky fuzz from the Pink Fairies – a seminal UK group who were maybe trapped in a space between late psych and early glam – and somehow equally important to both! There's lots going on in the set – modes that are as offbeat as styles put forth by The Fugs in the late 60s, but a lot sharper overall from a musical perspective – especially in the way the group uses great guitar work and a few catchy numbers to sew the whole thing together – on titles that include "Portobello Shuffle", "Marilyn", "Pigs Of Uranus", "Walk Don't Run", "X-Ray", "I Went Up I Went Down", and "I Saw Her Standing There". Kings Of Oblivion is maybe the most fully-formed album from the legendary Pink Fairies – and a set that's got some really searing guitar from Larry Wallis – a melodic genius whose sound really holds things together, and gives the group a stronger focus than ever before! The guitar lines seem to bring out and amplify all the ideas the group were going for before – and maybe give the group a sense of darkness that they never fully reached – not hard rock cliche, but this tightness that's also completely individual – maybe like early Thin Lizzy at their best, yet in a completely different way. Titles include "I Wish I Was A Girl", "City Kids", "When's The Fun Begin", "Chromium Plating", "Street Urchin", and "Chamber Maid". Bonus tracks include "Going Down", "Walk Don't Run (first version)", "War Girl (alt mix)", "The Snake", "Do It (single mix)", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout (alt mix)", "Well Well Well (alt mix)", "City Kids (alt)", and "Hold On (single)". Motown, 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Way more than just a "cellarful" of Motown – a wealth of great tracks, all of which are previously unreleased! This incredible 2CD set is a landmark in the history of both Motown and Northern Soul – as it brings together 40 tracks that were recorded in the glory days of the Detroit scene, but never issued at the time. A number of cuts on the set have risen to fame over the years as bootlegs floating around the UK club scene, and they're issued properly here for the first time ever, along side other lost gems that will soon become new classics to a generation of soul fans – all wrapped up in one great package filled with notes on the music, and listing the origins of the tunes! Titles include "My Sugar Baby" by Frank Wilson, "Baby A Go Go" by Barbara McNair, "How Can I" by Brenda Holloway, "He Was Really Sayin Somethin" by Earl Van Dyke, "Until You Came Along" by Carolyn Crawford, "Before It's Over" by Sammy Ward, "Long Gone Lover" by Velvelettes, "If You Ever Get Your Hands On Me" by Gladys Knight & The Pips, "Lucky Lucky Me" by Jimmy Ruffin, "I Wish I Liked You" by Marvin Gaye, "You Made Me Feel Like" by Syreeta, "Don't Let Me Down" by Kim Weston, "Don't Put Off Till Tomorrow What You Can Do Today" by The Monitors, and "It Must Be Love Baby" by Chuck Jackson & Yvonne Fair. Lots lots more, and filled with wonderful tunes! CD

✨✧ Master Musicians Of JoujoukaBrian Jones Presents The Pipes Of Pan At JouJouka ... LP
Rolling Stones, Late 60s/1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Back before he was found floating face-down in a swimming pool, ex- (or late-) Stones member Brian Jones put together this landmark bit of trippiness for the Rolling Stones label. Although the music is largely ethnographic, the whole thing's got this neo-colonialist hipster edge to it – as Brion Gysin wrote the liner notes, Jones wrote an introduction (and included his picture), and the whole thing was made possible by the presence of British junkies in Morrocco. The music is very trippy and trance-like, with lots of pinched reed sounds and haunting throbbing pulsing. Wild stuff, and a cool cross-pollination of cultures. LP, Vinyl record album
(In great shape with minimal wear and aging, including the insert!)

✨✧ Hannah Williams & The Affirmations50 Foot Woman ... LP
Record Kicks (Italy), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Hannah Williams comes on with a fuller force than before – really topping the energy of The Affirmations with a quick-stepping approach to soul music that's every bit as sharp as their instrumentation! Shawn Lee produced the set, which might account for some of the energy – and there's some nice handling of both the vocals, keyboards, and the guitars, so that they wrap around each other in this great way, and propel the whole thing forward in a mighty nice way! Titles include "I Can't Let This Slip Away", "Sinner", "Tablecloth", "Please Be Good To Me", "Hourglass", "I Feel It", "The Only Way Out Is Through", and "50 Foot Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Buckner & Jo JonesBuck & Jo (4CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $19.99 29.98
A fantastic pairing of talents – brought together here in a set of recordings that features way more material than we ever knew the duo recorded! The massive 4CD package is focused on spare duets between drummer Jo Jones and organist Milt Buckner – both American jazz musicians from a slightly earlier age, given a chance to really stretch out in a great way during the early 70s – taken into the studio by producer Hugues Panassie, in a mode that's free from any restrictions or commercial trappings at all! Both musicians can really do a lot with a little – especially Buckner, whose Hammond almost always sounds better without a larger group alongside him – because you can really hear his great command of the keys and pedals, and his amazing ear for a very wide range of sounds. The package features 42 tracks in all – some of them nice and long – with titles that include "Blues For Diane", "Am I Blue", "Pick Yourself Up", "Almost Like Being In Love", "Smoke Rings", "Madeline's Garden", "Anna Ryan", "Cute", "Count's Basement", "Perdido", "Three Little Words", "It Happened In Monterey", "That's All", and "Believe It Beloved". TremeloesTremeloes – The Complete CBS Recordings 1966 to 1972 (6CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 6CD ... $42.99
A much-needed and insanely overstuffed look at the Tremeloes – one of those groups from the 60s who are known for an odd single or two – but who have a tremendous recorded legacy that finally gets its due in this mighty box set! The Tremeloes were perfect at turning out the right sort of pop psych tunes that made the British charts sparkle in the late 60s – numbers that were catchy, but inventive too – never too indulgent, but really well-crafted with just the right attention to guitar work next to the vocals. Their singles did well, but the group recorded a huge amount of material for CBS during their time as a group – all of which is included here, a total of 165 tracks, plus a big booklet of notes. In addition to singles and b-sides, the set features the albums Here Come The Tremeloes and Alan Dave Rick & Chip – both in mono and stereo – the albums World Explosion, Suddenly You Love, Live In Cabaret, and Master – plus a rare unissued soundtrack for the film May Morning! There's lots of bonus material, unreleased tracks, and rare European singles too – which makes for a wonderfully groovy collection overall. CD

✨✧ Lonnie Liston SmithExotic Mysteries ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the fullest-sounding albums ever cut by Lonnie Liston Smith – but one of the greatest albums too! The set has Smith really taking off a bit more than on his work for RCA or Flying Dutchman – hitting some fuller sounds in the studio, thanks to backings arranged by Berg DeCoteaux, who's clearly trying to push Lonnie's groove a bit more towards a soul fusion audience of the time, yet always without losing any of the righteous energy that makes the music so great. There's a wonderful blend of acoustic and electric keyboards on the set – wrapped up in bits of strings, and propelled strongly to the skies with some great rhythms that include bass work from a young Marcus Miller, who also wrote some of the tracks on the set. Vocals aren't often in the lead – usually just sung by a chorus, if at all – and some of the best numbers here have a laidback groove that's totally wonderful – nice and mellow, with lots of room for the keys! Tracks include "Quiet Moments", "Space Princess", "Night Flower", "Mystical Dreamer", "Magical Journey", "Singing For Love", and "Exotic Mysteries". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Antonio AdolfoViralata ... LP
Artezanal/Far Out (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 26.98
Fantastic stuff – and one of the greatest records ever by Brazilian keyboardist Antonio Adolfo! The album was recorded at the end of the 70s, and has a sound that's a lot like the best fusion work by Azymuth – a great mix of jazz and funk, plus more dynamic Brazilian elements – all wrapped together in a way that a rare few hybrids do this well! There's great keyboards right up front in the mix – and the backing has some tight percussion that crackles along and gives the album a heavy bottom and a great groove. The album was originally only issued on the tiny Artezanal label – but it feels like a lost gem from the classic funk years at Fantasy Records – internationally funky, far past just a Brazilian music gem. Titles include the massive break cut "Cascavel", plus other nice tracks like "Viralata", "A Marcha", "Assanhada", "Vermelhinho", and "Brincadeira Em Mi Bemol". LP, Vinyl record album

Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... $6.99
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". First time ever on CD – a seminal reissue from Dusty Groove! CD

Bossa IVForget Your Name ... LP
2019. New Copy ... $6.99
A charming, joyous batch of tunes from Bossa IV – not really the bossa-sounding project you might assume from the name and from the fact Dusty Groove is stocking it, but a timeless and melodic batch of indie rock we'd put up there some of of the best of out there. This is Chicagoan Matthew McGarry's third album as Bossa IV, and he continues to do nearly everything himself, and impressively so, bearing influences from the 60s onward, but he's got such a singular style that you can't pinpoint them directly. We don't stock a lot of contemporary rock at the ol' DG...Bossa IV is just that irresistible! Includes "Protest (Down Pat)", "Sudden Deafness", "Total Chaos", "Paper View", "Forever Numb", "Ethnograph (Ra CBE)", "Grim Reaper", "Karaoke (ACH)", "Versa" and "Forget Your Name". James BrownSoul Syndrome ... CD
TK/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $22.99
A rare TK Records effort from James Brown – very much in the best uptempo funk mode of the later Polydor years! The groove here is quite similar to those better-known efforts – grooves that are a bit quicker than a few years before, but still played in a core JB funky style – live and lively, with plenty of emphasis on the rhythms! Brown often referred to his style here as disco, but it's a lot more like some of the P-Funk progressions of the period – a mode that's more polished than a grittier funky generation, yet far from smooth club or disco overall. There's plenty of choppy little groovers that make the record great – and titles include the long cut "Rapp Payback", plus "Funky Men", "Smokin & Drinkin", "Stay With Me", and "Mashed Potatoes". CD

Donald ByrdThank You For FUML (Funkin Up My Life) ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1978. Used ... $14.99
A post-Blue Note effort, and Donald's changing things up a bit with his 125th Street Orchestra and Uptown Singers – funking along in a way you'd expect from the longwinded title! Byrd loostens up the smoother backgrounds of his recent Larry Mizell helmed work, and in their place are grooves that have more of a heavy slap bass sound, punchier horns and guitars! There are lotes nice moments that are a bit more restrained than the comparably full-on funk approach – and these have a spacey fusiony soul quality that reminds us of similar work that Byrd was doing with The Blackbyrds at the time. One of the best cuts is "Your Life Is My Ecstasy", which has some great bubbling Moog behind it, which creates a sound that you've heard sampled famously by Tribe Called Quest. Other nice ones are "Loving You", which features vocals by Jim Gilstrap, and a remake of Duke Pearson's "Cristo Redentor", a big hit for Don in the 60s, which is redone here in an excellent slow funk mode that feels like Bob James' work on CTI. Others include "Have You Heard The News", "In Love With Love" and "Close Your Eyes And Look Within". CD

A very groovy soundtrack to a very groovy movie – a near-lost 60s exploitation flick that's got it all – biker gangs, go-go girls, and lots of mod rocking numbers to really fit the scene! The album's got a fair bit of straight 60s rock numbers – the kind of offbeat tunes you'd hear on some of those excellent AIP soundtracks from the same time – with vocals from Larry Cartell, and a mix of modes that moves between upbeat go-go tracks and moodier blue-tinged numbers – blended both with some larger arrangements that are in a more familiar soundtrack style, done by Nicholas Carras – and a few bits of dialog from the film – which spices things up in a very cool way! Titles include "Girl In Gold Boots", "Sin", "Knockin Boots", "My Carless Heart", "Everything I Touch Turned To Gold", "Do You want To Laugh Or Cry", "That's The Fool In Me", and "Jimmy's Girl". Lots of heavy love here – a wonderful sense of rapport between the great tenorist Al Cohn and piano genius Jimmy Rowles! Both musicians were still recording heavily at the time of this album, but the record seems to capture them in a really special space that still stands strongly on its own – a mode that's much more relaxes than some of the Pablo Records sessions of the time, and which has Cohn in an especially striking mode – really hitting these openly-blown, often-angular lines that are dripping with soul – more heart and feeling than we might normally expect from him, matched equally by Jimmy Rowles' wonderful phrasing on piano – very much here at the top shelf level he delivered with Stan Getz on The Peacocks album. Way way way more than just another book of album cover images – and instead, a stunningly huge volume that offers up key images from the disco generation, plus a wealth of knowledge and information too! The book really lives up to the "encyclopedic" promise of its title – as it features label-by-label chapters on key companies during the disco years – from AVI to West End, with lots of great stops in between – all in chapters that feature images of most of the best albums on the labels, plus a listing of matrix numbers in order, which is a very useful tool! The album cover pages feature as many as 16 images on a large square page, complete with catalog numbers – which means that the book features thousands of images along with the numerical content – and a special section at the end features an even bigger array of 12" picture sleeves and label covers too. There's also as scrapbook of disco advertisements, and more label paperwork – plus sections on Roller Disco, Disco Instruction Records, Disco Samplers, and disco work on some of the major labels. The hardcover book is 384 pages, oversized, and super-heavy – a true treasure for any record collector! Book
