Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.99
Great cuts from the old school – pulled together from the earliest days of hip hop – at a time when the boundary lines in the music weren't so fully formed! These days, the difference between hip hop and club cuts is huge – but back in the South Bronx scene at the start, there was a lot more interplay between styles – as 70s funk served as the blueprint, disco singles expanded the format, soul vocals gave some structure, and live rhymes and DJ work provided all of the spontaneous elements that made the music so unique – coming together with amazing energy that really reflected the street-level sounds of the New York scene! This ultra-hip collection brings together all those amazing strands from the early years – in a set that's one of the best historically important Soul Jazz titles we've seen in years – from the excellent track selection right down to the very detailed notes. There's plenty of rare cuts here you're not likely to have in your collection – and titles include "Body Rock" by Neil B, "Positive Life" by Love Bug Starski & The Harlem World Crew, "At The Place To Be" by Mr Sweety G, "New Rap Language" by Spoonie G & The Treacherous Three, "We Are People Too" by Master Jay, "Equidity Funk" by Mistafide, "And You Know That" by TJ Swan, "Searching Rap" by Bon Rock & The Rhythm Rebellion, "Willie Rap" by Willie Wood & The Willie Wood Crew, "Rhythm Rap Rock" by Count Coolout, "On The Go" by Black Bird & Kevski, "Philosophy Rappin Spree" by Super 3, "Move Your Body" by Bramsam, and "One More Time" by Sugar Daddy. Millie JacksonLive & Uncensored ... LP
Spring, 1979. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $2.99
Uncensored is right! Millie's live shows during the 70s were a lot raunchier than any of her records – and were usually filled with profanity, off-color jokes, and plenty of frank and foxy references to sex. She'd built her name on record through sweet heartbreaking southern soul sides – but this album gives the at-home listening crowd one of their first tastes of Millie in the raw, and it contains many classic monologues and lots of witty patter that Millie still uses in live shows to this day. Includes a great version of "If Loving You Is Wrong", with a hip rap in the middle; a nice take on "Keep The Home Fire Burnin", with a similar monologue to that used by Latimore in his live sets; a version of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?", the "Phuck U Symphony"; a piece on "The Soaps", and "Didn't I Blow Your Mind". Tanya MorganBrooklynati ... CD
Interdependent, 2009. Used ... $6.99
Tanya Morgan's second proper album – the duo's Moonlighting was one of the freshest, most soulful and resonant hip hop albums of the mid 00s in our humble opinions, and Brooklynati is even better! It's tough to describe Tanya Morgan – the trio of Von Pea, Ilyas and Donwill – without falling into soul & funk beats-built early 90s rap reverent cliche, which is a shame, because it doesn't take long into their records to determine that they're among the best at what they do! They make it sound easy, but if it was, more of the indie hip hop we hear would be at least half as good as TM is, and that's just not the case. Von Pea handles a lot of the production, with other tracks produced by Brick Beats, with appearances by Phonte & Brittany Bosco, Blu, Kay of the Foundation & Chop, and others. The album is loosely structured around the life and times in the fictional city of Brooklynati, a borough with a midtown park dedicated to J Dilla, which sounds right to us. Titles include "ON Our Way", "Alleye Need", "So Damn Down", "Plan B", "Just Not True", "Never Enough (Crazy Love), Just Arrived (Now What)?" and more. CD

Camille YarbroughIron Pot Cooker ... CD
Vanguard/Ace (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $9.99 14.98
One of THE spoken word classics of the 70s funk years – an amazing album based around the poetry of Camille Yarbrough – set to some amazing funky backings! The sound here is incredibly righteous – almost a more sophisticated version of Betty Davis – done with a stark, spare groove that makes the bass bits and drums really come out in the mix! Camille's got a heck of a lot of personal vision, and really works the album together as a whole – making for a set that's far more than just "poetry plus music" – and instead an audio tapestry with an incredibly deep sound! Includes a heavy rap on the streets that culminates in the great "Little Sally the Super Sex Star" – plus the classic "Take Yo Praise", which was sampled famously by Fatboy Slim – and the cuts "Can I Get A Witness" and "All Hid". The Czarface team of Wu-Tang veteran Inspectah Deck and Boston underground hip hop heavyweights 7L & Esoteric are joined by the one-and-only MF Doom – a bonafide supergroup – and one of the finest comic book/sci-fi rap records since Madvillainy! Each one of these characters is so brilliant at their best, this record would've been a lot of fun even of they were just winging it – but it's actually pretty A-Game – with big, boisterous beats and clever samples and pretty deft rhymes throughout! Includes "Take Your Medicine", "Meddle With Metal", "Badness Of Madness", "Close Talker" (impressively riffing on a postpunk track by Wire), "Forever People", "Captain Crunch", "Don't Spoil It", "Phantoms" with Open Mike Eagle, "Bomb Thrown", "You Masked For It", "Nautical Depth", "MF Czar", "Sleeping Dogs" and more. The second album, and even if it's not as dope as as the mythical Illmatic, but how could anyone hope to live up to those expectations? The Trakmasters come up with some nice beats, chided for being a bit on the commercial side by critics at the time, but they've aged a lot better than most street rap chart fodder at the time. Lyrically Nas is still on point, and going back to this record, especially considering a few of the ones he's dropped since, it wears well with the test of time. Larry CoryellCoryell (LP style gatefold sleeve) ... CD
Vanguard/Universe (Italy), 1969. Used Gatefold ... $24.99
Maybe the funkiest album that guitarist Larry Coryell ever cut – his debut as a leader, and a fuzzy, freaky set that features some massively heavy drums from the great Bernard Purdie! The set's jazz at the core, but has lots of rock elements too – including vocals from Coryell on a few cuts, whose rough-edged style of singing works nicely with the fuzz on his guitar. The whole thing's a really freewheeling trip down that genre-busting road that had opened up in the underground of the late 60s – a path taken away from folk, jazz, rock, and other more mainstream roads – served up with help from Mike Mandel on keyboards, Jim Pepper on flute, and bassists Chuck Rainey, Ron Carter, and Albert Stinson. Titles include the long funky groove called "The Jam with Albert", plus the tracks "Sex", "Beautiful Woman", "Morning Sickness", and "Ah Wuv Ooh". (Nice "naked kids" cover, too – the kind that must have made someone's therapist a lot of money!) CD

Alexander Skip SpenceAndOarAgain (3LP set) (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Modern Harmonic, Late 60s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $55.99 59.99
A landmark album from Skip Spence – the onetime lead singer of Moby Grape, cast out of the group on his own by the time of this debut solo album – a record that's as powerful as it is fragile, and which has been the one lasting musical legacy of the man himself! The record almost sunk without a trace at the time, but has gone onto become the stuff of legend over the decade – supported by fellow singers, songwriters, and even a fair bit of the music press – who all shine key light on the record's unique, ahead of its time quality! Spence recorded the set for the same Columbia Records that was willing to take a chance on the early Leonard Cohen records – and there's a similarly singular vibe to Skip's approach – one that puts the whole thing at the level of "missed the first time around – but never again!" albums by later-decade legends like Big Star, Nick Drake, and maybe even Cohen. The style is hard to describe – similar reworking of roots-though-psych as Moby Grape, but a lot more intimate too – with so many lost dark corners, the set will be rewarding your ears for years to come! Titles include his original "Cripple Creek", plus "Diana", "Margaret Tiger Rug", "Weighted Down", "Little Hands", "Books Of Moses", "All Come To Meet Her", "Broken Heart", and "War In Peace". This 3CD set is incredible – and features 2 1/2 CDs' worth of previously unreleased material – along with a huge booklet of notes as well! Unreleased tracks include "This Time He Has Come", "It's The Best Thing For You", "Keep Everything Under Your Hat", "If I'm Good", "Furry Heroine", "Fountain", "Doodle", "I Think You & I", "You Know", "My Friend", "The Shape You're In", "I Want A Rock & Roll Band", "She Don't Care", and "Keep Everything Under Your Hat" – plus a huge amount of alternates and unusual versions of songs! One of The Artistics' most beautiful albums for Brunswick – and the one that includes the title song that was perhaps their greatest single! "I Want You To Make My Life Over" is a classic bit of Chicago soul – done at a level that really sums up all the sophisticated changes the city had brought to the music at the start of the 70s – and served up with cool vibes, great vocals, and a heavenly production style that wraps up the harmonies tightly together, and floats them over the top with nary a wrinkle! That cut kicks off the album, and things only just get better and better – on titles that include "Just Another Heartache", "Nothing But Heartaches", and "Trouble Heartache & Pain" (hey, these guys had a lot of heartache!) – plus "Out In The Country", "Sugar Cane", and "What The World Needs Now". BandIslands ... LP
Capitol, 1977. Very Good+ ... $3.99
A truly underappreciated later album from The Band, made after they decided to hang it up as a touring act – one that holds up SO much better than it's given credit for, by thier die hard fans and even The Band itself – but it works for us! The Band's most legendary first couple of records were the product of a longtime road tested group of deeply invested craftsmen, working together in a beautifully intuitive way. By this point, they are well known to have been looking for an exit strategy – and while Islands is a strong batch of songs, masterfully played and soulfully sung – it's genuine charms get lost in the lore. It's a breezier, easier going affair than their more rawly passionate records, but it's an overlooked gem. Includes "Right As Rain", "Street Walker", "Ain't That A Lot Of Love", "Islands", "The Saga Of Pepote Rouge", "Knockin' Lost John", "Living In A Dream" and their sweet little take on "Georgia On My Mind", with Richard Manuel on lead vocals for a change, given this beauty of a pop standard a gruff edge that works wonderfully well. Bob Bert is a lot more than just a drummer and this a lot more than a mere memoir, with tons of Bert's photographs from the early 80s NYC downtown scene, interviews and photos from his great 90s DIY zine BB Gun and lots more! Bert played in early era Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks and more, and after a brief and humble look back at his childhood influences, the book quickly turns into kind of a time capsule of the late 70s & 80s underground through his own eyes and camera. It includes snapshots of legends performing or hanging out at Mudd Club, Max's and CBGBs we'd probably never see without this book, behind the scenes pics with Sonic Youth in their early days and tales of Bert's time with Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Bewitched and other bands. Also vital are the compiled BB Gun pieces, where Bert interviewed and photographed artists as varied as Dead Moon, Lydia Lunch (who pens the forward for this book), Nancy Sinatra, Genesis P Orridge, Elliot Smith, James Chance and lots of others. Many of the chapter titles refer to key musical texts, but then quickly extrapolate from those moments – soaring out from "I Am The Blackgold Of The Sun", "The Greta Garbo Home For Wayward Boys & Girls", and "Painting With Light" – and looking at psychedelia on both sides of the Atlantic in the 60s, with lots of surprising insights along the way. Stanley CrouchKansas City Lightning – The Rise & Times Of Charlie Parker ... Book
Harper Perennial, 2013. New Copy ... $4.99 16.99
The story of Charlie Parker is often draped in hyperbole and exaggeration – which is why it's extra great that this biography is handled by Stanley Crouch – one of the few writers we could trust to get past the hype and really find a way to link Parker's life and music! As you might guess from the title, the book spends a lot of time looking at Bird's early years in Kansas City – and draws a great portrait of that vivid environment in the years between the wars, which is almost as enthralling as the information on Parker himself. Crouch writes with a great sense of story, as well – and he holds us rapt throughout, going way past any of the over-told tales from later years. 365 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Equipe/Far Out (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $12.99
A rare Brazilian album from the legendary keyboardist Deodato – recorded right around the same time as his classic CTI albums Prelude and Deodato 2 – but much more obscure! This set's got a similar electric vibe, but is much more compact – with maybe more organ than Rhodes, on tunes that are short, groovy, and very much to the point – graced with the kind of arranging genius that Eumir showed during the bossa nova years, but with a lot more soul and funk elements in the mix! The whole thing's very unique – not like any other Deodato album – and it was partly recorded in New York, with help from Phil Bodner and Romeo Penque on saxes and flute, and trumpet from Marvin Stamm. Titles include "Arranha Ceu" – a remake of his "Skyscrapers" – plus "Puma Branco", "Extremo Norte", "Menina", "O Jogo", "Flap", "Atire A 1a Pedra", and "Carlota E Carolina". CD

Priority, 1979. Used ... $9.99
One of our favorite Funkadelic albums ever – a tightly grooving classic that never lets up at all! There's a sense of perfection to everything here – one that really gets the group past their tripped-out early years, and firmly into the sublime territory George Clinton hit with Parliament – an amazing sound that's wrapped up perfectly on every single track – grooves that definitely raised the bar for a huge amount of mainstream funk acts who were popping up at the time. Production is never too slick, and there's still lots of tasty guitar licks wrapped up in the mix – and titles include the classics "Freak Of The Week" and "Not Just Knee Deep" – plus "Field Maneuvers", "Holly Wants To Go To California", and "Foot Soldiers". Hartmut Geerken & Chris TrentSun Ra Omniverse (hardcover) ... Book
Art Yard (Germany), 1994/2015. New Copy ... $71.99 72.00
An incredible book on Sun Ra & The Arkestra – one that's got all the beauty and heft of one of his rare albums on the Saturn Records label! This is the second edition of Omniverse (the first went out of print almost 20 years ago, and now goes for fabulous sums) – and it's even bigger than the first, with a stunning amount of words, notes, photos, artwork, and images of vintage records – all pulled together to represent the "omniverse" promised in the title! The book begins with a long history on Ra and his music, along with all the complicated business practices that accompanied it – then goes on to include pages and pages of wonderful photos, by Val Wilmer and author Hartmut Geerken – alongside other writings on Ra's music by Chris Cutler, Salah Ragab, Robert Campbell, Amiri Baraka, and others – before then diving into a huge discography on Ra-related recordings – with images on pre-Saturn singles and 78s, releases on Saturn and other labels, and lots more session information too – then ending with a huge amount of images of vintage record covers and other Ra releases, plus rare handbills as well. The whole thing is as big as the biggest coffee table books you'll find – but a lot more interesting overall – and the presentation is top-shelf all the way through! Expensive, but totally worth it even if you've only got a minor interest in Sun Ra – over 300 pages, full color, and lavishly printed. Book

GermsLive At The Starwood Dec 3, 1980 ... LP
Slash/Run Out Groove, 1980. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
The last live stand of The Germs – capturing the band's raw, caterwauling ferocity, underappreciated musicianship behindDarby Crash's feral howls and sly humor – just 4 days before Darby's death. Given the band's well earned reputation for utter chaos, the most stunning thing about this particular recording is how lightning fast brilliant the band is. Don't mistake that statement for polished professionalism. This is The Germs after all, they sound like they might fall apart at any moment – especially given Darby's antics – but Lorna Doom's and Don Bolles's pummeling rhythms and Pat Smear's ferocious guitars are a lot tighter than they were a couple years earlier, though not at the expense of caustic energy. Darby's between songs banter pleading for a beer or lightly berating the crowd are almost lighthearted at times, so you might not guess he was headed for a final self-inflected crash just a few days later. 22 tracks on 2LPs: "Circle One", "Manimal", "Caught In My Eye", "No God", "Strange Notes", "What We Do Is Secret", "Media Blitz", "Communist Eyes", "Let's Pretend", "Lexicon Devil", "Shut Down (Annililation Man)", "Public Image", "We Must Bleed", "Richie Dagger's Crime" and more. KPM/Vocalion (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $18.99
Sweet KPM funk from the 70s – a set that features the legendary "Big City Suite" from David Gold, plus 20 other groovers from rare KPM sound library albums of the time! Gold's suite is really great – a hip mix of keyboards, wah wah guitar, and strings – all wrapped together warmly in a portrait of a city from a variety of angles, in a variety of moods. The work's almost an update of 50s city-symphony albums, but is put together here with a much hipper 70s soundtrack mode – lots of subtle elements that really keep things interesting! Other tracks offer up a mix of jazz, soundtrack, and sound library funk – hand-picked from KPM classics like Jazzrock, Synthesis, Sounds Of The Times, Trendsetters, and other legendary albums – really packed in here with a huge amount of cuts that are totally great! Titles include "Good Vibrations" and "Trial Of Strength" by Keith Mansfield, "Testing Time" by David Lindup, "Four O'Clock Earthquake" and "Smokey Joe's Dilemma" by John Cameron, "Watchful Eye" by James Clarke, "Sunshine Special" and "Get Ready Get Set Fly" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Open Roads" by Nick Ingman, "Go Getter" by John Cameron, "City Airscape" and "City Police" by David Gold, and "Lap Of Honour" by Clive Hicks. Chico Hamilton/Elmer BernsteinSweet Smell Of Success ... CD
Decca/El (UK), 1957. Used ... $9.99
A jazz soundtrack double-header – one that features both the small combo and larger band version of the soundtrack to The Sweet Smell Of Success! The first half of the CD features the Chico Hamilton Quintet's album of music – a wonderful bit of cinematic jazz from the 50s. The combo was a key part of the LA scene at the time, but are oddly featured as a regular club act in the movie's New York setting – but we'll gladly forgive that geographic error, given that the music on the set is so great. The quality's a bit like some of the Hamilton Quintet work on World Pacific – but there's a slightly freer, more urgent feel here too – work that's sometimes somewhat driving, and beautifully blended from the guitar of John Pisano, clarinet of Paul Horn, cello of Fred Katz, piano of Carson Smith, and drums from Chico. Side one features a lot of short incidental cuts – like "Susan", "Cheek To Chico", "Jam", and "Night Beat" – and side 2 is an extended "Concerto Of Jazz Themes From The Soundtrack Of Sweet Smell Of Success". The second half of the CD features the full orchestral version of the Sweet Smell Of Success soundtrack – but done in a style that's almost as jazzy and swinging as the small combo one! Elmer Bernstein's at the helm here – and the music's a wonderful pastiche of modes that's right up there with his sublime score for The Man With The Golden Arm – done in a similar blend of driving jazz, somber moments, and some slightly more raucous touches! As with that album, the players are all great – and soloists on the album include Pete Candoli, Ted Nash, and Shelly Manne – west coast players despite the New York setting of the film, and playing here with a fair bit of grit in their groove. Titles include "The Street", "Hot Dogs & Juice", "Toots Shor's Blues", "Nite Spot Rock", "Love Scene", and "Out Of Darkness". CD

Ovation, 1970. Very Good+ ... $19.99
An amazing little record – easily one of the coolest albums ever on the legendary Ovation label – and a set that has the small imprint almost hitting the heights of their Chicago neighbor Cadet Records! The core sounds here are from the folksy duo of Chuck Hollins and Dave Starr – but their music is really expanded with some key studio touches – jazzy inflections from session players, some slight fuller arrangements – and an overall vibe that carries the same sense of hope and new voice that you'd find in records by Terry Callier or Rotary Connection! The dawn of the 70s was a great time to push the boundaries of what could be done with folk and psychedelic trappings, and these guys really find a great little space – balancing trippy lyricism, lots of ethereal atmosphere, and a few heavily percussive jams! Titles include "Talking To Myself", "Krishna Dov", "Cry Baby Cry", "Twin City Prayer", "John Hurt", "Hard Headed Women", "Lovable", "Digress", "Staying High", "Sidewalk's Talkin'", and "Feelin' Good". William Kurk Productions, 2012. Used ... $6.99
Neither pop nor fusion – but a great little record that reminds us why we love William Kurk so much! There's definitely some of the jazzy styles promised by the title, but they're mixed in with Kurk's inventive approach to soul music – warm instrumentation wrapped around compelling lyricism, but in a bouncy, playful way that's light years from the usual! This time around, there's a slight echo of 80s ideals – not so much in the music, which still has lots of 70s warmth – but in the criss-crossing of modes, and in the way that acoustic and electric elements are used together to create a really full sound. Titles include "9 by 3", "Revenge Of Mega Man", "Star Of The Sky", "All Of The Time", "Moonrise", "2012", and "Dragon Force". CD

James MasonRhythm Of Life ... LP
Chiaroscuro, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
One of our favorite albums ever – and every track is a masterpiece! The album was originally cut for the tiny Chiaroscuro label in 1977 – and it's got a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – soaring, soulful, jazzy, and righteous – wrapped up in a blend that's never been done this perfectly again! James Mason's a player who's know for a bit of keyboard work with other artists – but here, he's really working as a collective power – bringing together a brilliant ensemble that work as one to hit some sublime sounds – much in the way that Roy Ayers could work some key magic with his groups at the same time, but with a vibe that's very different too. Players include Ayers associates Justo Almario on saxes and Philip Woo on piano – and a young Narada Michael Walden adds some excellent drums to the record – a lot more powerful and funky than on most of his own albums! Lead vocals are by Clarice Taylor – who's got this unique voice that really makes the record – proud, but sensitive at the same time too – and Mason plays lots of Fender Rhodes, polymoog, Arp, and a bit of guitar. Titles include the breakbeat classic "Funny Girl", the monster groover "Sweet Power Your Embrace", the funky "Slick City", and the massive "Free" – but every cut's a winner, and others include "Mbewe", "Rhythm Of Life", and "Dreams". This is the kind of album that makes us proud to be in business! LP, Vinyl record album

MC SquaredTantalizing Colours – The Reprise Recordings ... CD
Reprise/Now Sounds (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $3.99 14.99
Glittering sunshine pop throughout! MC Squared has a name that may sound like a weak late 80s crossover rapper, but the group's a killer harmony act from late 60s Reprise Records – produced to perfection by Lenny Waronoker, and given the same mix of tight studio and hip undercurrents that you'd find in the hippest of the late 60s Warner generation – that slightly sinister edge that can always make LA pop of the time go a lot deeper than you might expect! This package is a true treasure trove of the group's work – their one full album for Reprise, plus bonus tracks from singles – all with a sound that you'd stack proudly next to work by artists like Roger Nichols or Paul Williams at the time. Titles include "The Dolphins", "Adults Only", "Bornatzatt", "Ghost Of Man", "Miss Abercrombie", "Do You Care", "Smilin", "Karneeval", and "Tantalizing Colours". Mighty BabyAt A Point Between Fate & Destiny – The Complete Recordings (Mighty Baby/Jug Of Love/bonus tracks & live material) (6CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 6CD ... $35.99
A pair of rare albums from Mighty Baby – plus a huge amount of bonus material too! First up is the self-titled Mighty Baby record from 1969 – an amazing debut from a group that grew out of 60s mod rockers The Action – but who have a very different sound overall! In a way, the shift here is a more vivid step forward than some of the other British acts who slowly evolved from mod to prog – as the group work here in a freewheeling blend of guitars, drums, and some specially nice sax and organ lines – with with this swirling vibe that really moves past some of the straighter American jazz and soul elements that got them going! Ian Whiteman handles the vocals, saxes, and keyboards – and there's this soaring quality that's maybe somewhere between early Yes and some of the Brian Auger shifts at the start of the 70s – with a touch of the vocal warmth of CSNY – all held down by some great drumming from Roger Powell, in a group that also features Martin Stone on some mighty nice lead guitar. Titles include "Egyptian Tomb", "Trials Of A City", "Same Way From The Sun", "I've Been Down So Long", and "A Friend You Know But Never See". Jug Of Love is a record with a cover that has Mighty Baby looking a bit more relaxed than before – and sounding a fair bit relaxed, too – as they trade some of their more strongly-driven modes for a laidback, introspective vibe that's equally nice in its own sort of way! Roger Powell is still on drums, but he also handles some gentler percussion – and other group members shift some of the dynamism of their instrumentation towards more meditative modes – a shift you can definitely hear on the organ, saxes, and flute of Ian Whiteman – who also plays a bit of harmonium. Songs are a bit longer, with even more personal lyrics – and titles include "The Happiest Man In The Carnival", "Keep On Juggin", "Virgin Spring", "Testing The Life", and "Slipstreams". CD features lots of bonus material too! CD1 includes an unissued early acetate of the debut album – and CD2 features Jug Of Love bonus titles that include "Devil's Whisper", "My Favourite Day", "A Saying For Today", "An Understanding Love", and "Dustbin Full Of Rubbish". CD3 features rehearsal tracks for Jug Of Love. CD4 features an abandoned 1970 album, Day Of The Soup. CD5 features Live At Malvern – and CD6 features Live At Glastonbury. OutkastIdlewild ... CD
LaFace/Zomba, 2006. Used ... $2.99
The new album from Outkast and the soundtrack to their film Idlewild! Outkast has been daring haters for years to pounce at will – and they really take that approach to the next level by making what is far and away their oddest project in midst of the most scrutiny they will probably ever receive. We're lacking a bit of perspective in that we haven't seen the movie – but the best stuff probably makes it worth picking up. Idlewild continues the tag team style of Speakerboxx/Love Below in that the duo rarely appear together on the same tracks. The single "Mighty O" is the most notable expection, in that both rappers do their thing on it – and 3000 is actually rapping! The rest of the album, surprisingly, has a fairly coherent flow – with little touches of the 1930s vibe and atmosphere ( the setting of the film) – as envisioned by forward looking hip hoppers. It's a daring set of tracks with strong moments – and lots of additional singing by Sleepy Brown and others. Tracks include "Mighty O", "Peaches" feat Sleepy Brown & Scar, "Idlewild Blue (Don'tchu Worry 'Bout Me", "N2U" feat Khujo Goodie, "Morris Brown" feat Scar & Sleepy Brown, "Chronomentrophobia", "The Train" feat Sleep Brown & Scar, "Life Is Like A Musical", "Hollywood Divorce" feat Lil' Wayne & Snoop Dogg, "Buggface", "PJ & Rooster", "Greatest Show On Earth" feat Macy Gray. Popol VuhEssential Albums Collection (Affenstunde/Hosianna Mantra/Einsjager & Siebenjager/Aguirre/Nosferatu) (6LP 180 gram pressing) ... LP
BMG, Mid 70s. Near Mint- 6LP Box Set ... $109.99
A fantastic package – featuring the first five albums from this legendary group – all pressed on 180 gram vinyl in a big box set! First up is Affenstunde – some of the coolest, moogiest work to come from the German scene in the early 70s – and a record that's filled with loads of wonderful analogue electronics – spun out over these long, spacey extrapolations – and magically mixed with a host of acoustic elements too! The group is one of the most organic to ever approach this formula – and the sound here is beyond compare – hugely influential on many acts to come, but never handled this right – with such a perfect balance of simple elements and sophisticated ideas. Titles include "Affenstunde" and the three-part dream sequence "Ich Mache Einen Spiegel". Hosianna Mantra is next – a set that's still filled with all the amazing electronics of the group's previous records, but which also has even more focus and tunefulness too – yet all in a way that's still pretty darn far out overall! The album's got a slightly spiritual bent, as you might guess from the title – and the instrumentation is slightly expanded, so that there's more guitar and reed work than ever before, yet still used in a way that's pretty darn electronic. The tracks are all instrumental, and have a really beautiful sound – and titles include "Abschied", "Andact", "Nict Hoch Im Himmel", "Andacht", "Ah", and "Hosianna Mantra". Next is Eisjager & Siebenjager – a record that also has some of the group's most tuneful moments of the early 70s – and a sound that really shows them moving forward with a new sort of energy! Most of the tracks are short, and never overindulgent – yet they also show a growing skill with guitar solos, which helps bring out a rockish quality the group never had this strongly before – even though most of the record has an instrumental approach. Djong Yun sings a bit on the set, often in a moody, lyric-less way – and tracks include the side-long title cut, plus "Kleiner Krieger", "Gutes Land", "Morgengruss", "King Minos", and "Wurfelspiel". The Aguirre album is next – a set based on their initial soundtrack material for the Werner Herzog film of the same name, but one that also stretches out in a lot of new directions, too – with longer songs that really open up, although always strongly in the spirit of the original music! The sounds are from the trio of Florian Fricke on piano and keyboards, Daniel Fichelscher on guitars and percussion, and Djong Yun on a bit of vocals – all elements that are layered and processed, but at a very organic level that's very cool – so that nothing ever feels too forced, or too cold – that definite warmer side of the spectrum that Popol Vuh brought to the German scene of the 70s – and left as their legacy with great records like this! Some tracks are quite long – including the 16 minute "Vergegenwaertigung" – and titles include "Aguirre I", "Morgengruss II", "Agnus Dei", and "Aguirre II". The set finishes with a double-length version of the spooky soundtrack to Werner Herzog's remake of Nosferatu from the late 70s – featuring a spare, moody score that's quite different than some of Popul Vuh's other work. The music almost seems to bubble out of the ground like Nosferatu himself coming out of his coffin in the minutes after dusk – using light electronics to set a tone, but also employing a bit of what seems to be flute, plus occasional acoustic guitar, which has a very striking effect in this setting. Titles include "Mantra", "Die Nacht Derhimmel", "Through Pains To Heaven II", "On The Way", and "Venus Principal". LP, Vinyl record album

Transatlantic/Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Gerry Rafferty is best known on our shores for one big crossover AOR hit of the late 70s – but overseas in England, his career started much earlier – as you'll hear in this great set of material! The first CD in the set features two albums recorded under the name of The Humblebums – amazing early work from Gerry Rafferty – material that's completely different than his late 70s material that crossed the Atlantic in a bigger way – as the record's got this cool complexity that's not unlike some of the best folk rock experiments that were taking place at the time on Island Records! There's elements of guitar work and songphrasing that maybe also echo the generation of Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, and even John Martyn – but the songs also have some baroque orchestrations at some points, and fuller instrumentation at others – never fully commercial, and always with an acoustic core – and already-wonderful vocals from Raffterty. Titles include "Look Over The Hill & Far Away", "Steamboat Row", "Half A Mile", "My Singing Bird", "Patrick", and "Her Father Don't Lie". Next is the Gerry Rafferty album Can I Have My Money Back – a record that got circulated globally a lot more in the late 70s, to cash in on his rising fame – but which really takes off in a strong way that places him as a key talent in the folk/rock universe of the UK Transatlantic label at the start of the 70s! The songs are tighter and catchier than the acid folk generation – in part because Gerry's vocals are already completely charming, and produced with this compression that hints at Brit modes to come on mid 70s hits – but a lot more down to earth overall. Titles include "New Street Blues", "Mr Universe", "Mary Skeffington", "Make You Break You", "One Drink Down", and "Half A Chance". 2CD set features great notes, and 14 more bonus tracks! CD

SearchersWhen You Walk In The Room – The Complete Pye Recordings 1963 to 1967 (6CD set) ... CD
Pye/Grapefruit (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 6CD ... $36.99
An insane amount of material from The Searchers – served up here in a set that goes way way past their few hits that made it to the radio over here back in the 60s! The group were a key part of the evolving British sound of the time – and had this way of harmonizing together that was definitely in the mode of some of the best Lennon & McCartney material, especially the earliest Beatles albums – but they also have a catchy, jaunty quality that's all their own – maybe the best sort of variation of modes that other groups were breaking bigger with here during the British Invasion years. As with many of their contemporaries, there's certainly an influence from American blues and soul – but their style is also not as mod as some of the rest, and maybe has more of a riffing guitar style with the rhythms that might be more appropriate as an evolution of skiffle. Whatever the case, you'll find plenty to hear here – and plenty to love – as the set features a stunning 160 tracks on 6 CDs – mono and stereo mixes of Meet The Searchers, Sugar & Spice, It's The Searchers, Sounds Like Searchers, and Take Me For What I'm Worth – plus the record Take It Or Leave It, and a lot of bonus tracks from singles too! Woody ShawLotus Flower ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... About January 22, 2020
Beautiful later work from Woody Shaw – perfectly honed, in the soaring, stretching, soulful exploratory style of his best work in the 70s! The group's a quartet with Mulgrew Miller on piano, Stafford James on bass, Tony Reedus on drums, and Steve Turre joining Woody in the frontline – and the excellent work of the rhythm section provides a lively forum for the soloists to stretch out wonderfully, without going too far, or getting overindulgent and trapped in designs of their own making. The set sparkles with 5 original tunes – Turre's "Lotus Flower", James' "Game", Miller's "Eastern Joy Dance", and "Song Of Songs" and "Rahsan's Run", both by Shaw. CD

✨✧ Lilly TchiumbaAngola – Songs Of My People ... CD
Monitor, 1975. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really unique little record – an album of original songs based on older tradition, and one that interweaves elements of Portuguese culture with deeper roots of Angolan music! Lilly Tchiumba penned all the tracks herself, and sings in the Angolan language of Kimbundu – but there's a mix of percussion, guitar, and soaring vocals that echoes strongly with rootsier Brazilian, Cuban, and Haitian styles too – maybe in part because the Monitor label did such a wonderful job of recording the songs, and giving them this righteous, powerful vibe that still holds up strongly over the years! And by all of that, we almost mean that there's this sort of trans-global power to the whole record – one that moves beyond just a regional expression of culture, and past any sort of basic ethnographic mode – a lot like the Songs Of Protest album by Zelia Barbosa, also on the Monitor label. Titles include "Manazinha", "Gilagi Bu Kanga", "N'Zambi", "Mona Ki N'Gui Xissa", "Luanda M'Bolo", and "Kubata Di Rosinha". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

LRC, 1978. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Reedman Joe Thomas is wrapped up here in some very warm grooves – a mix of electric jazz and clubby modes – all of which takes Thomas' usual sound right to the discos! Most cuts have a backup vocal group – with contributions from Gwen Guthrie and Jocelyn Brown – but these vocals soon step aside to make room for Joe's solos on both tenor and flute – every bit as soulful as before, maybe a bit like Stanley Turrentine or John Handy in such a setting! The album's also got some great keyboards from Pat Rebillot – and titles include "Plato's Retreat", "Mr Mumbles", "Get In The Wind", "Two Doors Down", and "Low Down". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousAcross The Great Divide – Getting It Together In The Country 1968 to 1974 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A wonderful look at a shifting sound in British rock at the start of the 70s – a move away from more urban themes to rootsier ones – a shift that almost marks a second huge wave of influence from American music, but in ways that were very different from the blues and soul than first grabbed the UK scene at the start of the 60s! Part of the theme here is an actual one – as many London acts found that they could create music with more concentration out of the city – a geographic shift that's similar to the way that American artists moved from New York City to upstate New York, or San Francisco to Marin. But there's also a stylistic shift too – as these groups are feeling influence from The Byrds, Dylan, and others – picking up acoustic themes, and moving their music from mod, psych, and other styles towards some rootsier rock progressions. You might think of the box as charting UK territory followed by The Band and some of their contemporaries – but that's only part of the picture, as, like other great collections of this nature from Grapefruit, there's a hell of a lot of music, and very detailed notes on all the many facets within. 3CD set features 64 tracks in all – with work by Plainsong, The Parlour Band, Greasy Bear, Man, Carolanne, Rod Stewart, Northwind, Bronco, Traffic, Brinsley Schwarz, Quicksand, Mathews Southern Comfort, Mighty Baby, Fairport Convention, Heads Hands & Feel, Rare Bird, Starry Eyed & Laughing, The Hollies, Tony Hazzard, Shape Of The Rain, Curtiss Maldoon, Jawbone, Natural Gas, Heron, Byzantium, and many more. VariousBig Gold Dreams – A Story Of Scottish Independent Music 1977 to 1989 (5CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 5CD ... $39.99
The northern side of the UK scene finally gets its due – all with a sound that's a lot more exciting than the spare landscape pictured on the cover! The work is all from Scotland, and it's hardly the music of kilts and bagpipes – because nearly all these tracks had a huge influence on the British music scene down south – the kind of tracks that won over listeners on the John Peel Show, got rave reviews in NME and Melody Maker, and forever helped change the style at just about every step of the way from the punk years onwards! The package is a huge treasure trove of great sounds – as musically fantastic as it is a geographical marker – and honestly, we had no idea that so many of these artists were Scottish – as we usually just think of a few key 80s groups when we try to picture that scene. Instead, the book-like package has plenty of knowledge, notes, and pictures to offer – in support of 115 tracks by artists who run the gamut from early punk, through post-punk, power pop, nouveau psych, C86 charmers, Creation Records fuzz, and some of the new grooves that exploded at the end of the 80s. Includes work by The Zips, Skids, Subs, PVC, Rezillos, Jesus & Mary Chain, Del Amitri, Primal Scream, Meat Whiplash, Blood Uncles, Pastels, Altered Images, Prats, Josef K, Cocteau Twins, The Orchids, Vaselines, Shamen, Mackenzies, Baby Lemonade, Bachelor Pad, Dog Faced Hermans, Cindytalk, Strawberry Switchblade, Aztec Camera, Biff Bang Pow, Boots For Dancing, Fire Engines, Thomas Leer, The Associates, Scars, TV 21, Ales Fergusson, Jasmine Minks, and lots lots more! Gary Crowley was a young Capitol Radio DJ at the start of the 80s – which gave him a bird's eye view of all the musical changes that were taking place on the London scene of the time! This 4CD package is a great tribute to those years – and features some of Crowley's favorite tracks from the time – some very rare, some less-so – but all put together in a great package that really reminds us how much vibrant energy was running through music during the period! The tunes are a mix of minor hits and indie classics, post-punk gems and tuneful electro numbers – with a few surprises thrown in along the way – all wrapped up in a cool book-style package, with pages of notes on the music, and lots of images too. Titles include "Stop That Girl" by Vic Godard, "Abandon Ship" by April Showers, "Stop The Rain" by Suede Crocodiles, "Jive Baby On A Saturday Night" by The Jellies, "The Big Bean" by Pigbag, "Klacto Vee Sedstein" by Blue Rondo A La Turk, "Go Deh Yaka" by Monyaka, "Coup" by 23 Skidoo, "If Only" by Funkapolitan, "Slippery People (club)" by The Staple Singers, "Tuesday Sunshine (jock mix)" by The Questions, "Brother Brother" by The Kane Gang, "Be Thankful For What You've Got" by Sunset Gun, "Keep On Keepin On" by The Redskins, "Too Many Creeps" by Bush Tetras, "Is This Really The First Time You've Been In Love" by Jo Boxers, "Get Out Of London (intacontinentalballisticmix)" by Intaferon, "The Alibi (ext mix)" by Fun Boy Three, "It's A Man's Man's Man's World (ext mix)" by Brilliant, and "Looking Good Diving With The Wild Bunch" by Morgan McVey. VariousStrangers In The Room – A Journey Through The British Folk Rock Scene 1967 to 1973 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A tremendous overview of some really important years in British music – a period that sometimes gets overlooked, due to the huge explosion of psych, prog, and other styles – but one that's equally creative in its own sort of way! First off, forget the term "folk rock" – because although that's what this music might be, it's also very different than the pop folk modes that were big on the US scene in the mid 60s – as this folk rock scene instead represented a host of British musicians really retrenching, and finding their own sort of styles – sometimes borrowing bits from the ancient past of England, other times bringing forth a contemporary way of putting over a tune – at a level that might have gotten commercial and overproduced if these guys were working on the American west coast, but which instead has a nicely unadorned quality here. At a time when most American labels (and listeners) were really leaving folk music behind, these artists were able to often work free from the needs of a big commercial hit – and make genius music that's gone on to transform many minds over the decades. The set moves way past the obvious – and features a whopping 60 tracks in all, with lots of notes in the package – and even includes a few never-issued tracks as well. Includes work by Harvey Andrews, Jade, Michael Chapman, Andy Roberts, Mr Fox, Pentangle, Shirley Collins, Prelude, Heron, Mike Cooper, Paul Brett's Sage, Lifeblood, Dando Shaft, Canticle, Jeremy Harmer, Bridget St John, Al Jones, Bill Fay, Fairport Convention, The Woods Band, Matthew's Southern Comfort, The Johnstons, Beau, Richmond, Chimera, Spirogyra, and many others! ✨✧ Bar-KaysAs One/Nightcruising/Propositions/Dangerous ... CD
Mercury/Robinsongs (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A quadruple pack of albums from The Bar-Kays – four records on two CDs! First up is As One, a record that definitely has the Bar-Kays definitely grooving as one – with amazing choppy guitar, bumping basslines, and brassy horns – all wrapped up with some wonderfully warm production! The group have come a long way from their fuzzier funk roots by this time, but they're still sounding great – thanks to a matured outlook on their music, one that has them fitting nicely alongside some of their Mercury ensemble funk contemporaries – but in ways that still make them stand out from the pack! Titles include "Body Fever", "As One", "Say It Through Love", "Open Your Heart", "Deliver Us", and "Take The Time To Love Somebody". Nightcruising is a tight little set! There's a key ear for a bassline and beat that keeps The Bar-Kays standing stronger than most of their contemporaries – a sense of rhythm schooled in years of indie funk that comes through even on the mellower cuts here – which themselves show an even better side of the group in this generation, one that comes across great here on a few slower numbers that have a sweetly stepping groove. Titles include "Nightcruising", "Freaky Behavior", "Feels Like I'm Falling In Love", "Touch Tone", "Hit & Run", "Unforgettable Dream", "Traffic Jammer", and "Backseat Driver". Propositions is a set that's light years away from the sound of their Memphis roots, but still plenty darn funky overall! The album's got a tight bass-heavy approach to the music – the well-forged ensemble sound that graced the later years of the Bar-Kays' career, with nary a note out of place, and a sweet blend of keyboards over the bass, giving the tunes a strong electric feel – gliding wonderfully over romping rhythms on the upbeat tracks, and stepping sweetly on the album's few mellow gems. Titles include "Tripping Out", "Propositions", "Anticipation", "Do It (Let Me See You Shake)", "She Talks To Me With Her Body", and "You Made A Change In My Life". Dangerous has a tighter sound than before for The Bar-Kays – that lean approach to funky grooves that some of their contemporaries were hitting as the 80s moved on – yet still served up here by the full ensemble with a relatively fresh feel overall. Amidst the beats and keyboards, there's still lots of nice funky inflections on bass and guitar – often handled in a skittish mode that energizes things nicely, especially alongside the more electro-styled vocals. The vibe of the record is definitely in keeping with the cover – but in the best way possible – and titles include "Dangerous", "Dirty Dancer", "Make Believe Lover", "Freakshow On The Dance Floor", and "Sexomatic". Vocalion (UK), Late 70s. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet trio of late 70s albums from Robert Delgado – all wrapped up together in a 2CD set! The music here all holds onto those Caribbean and Latin touches that made Delgado so great in the 60s – a unique pop instrumental approach to global genres that made Robert almost an A&M equivalent on the German easy scene! On these records, though, Delgado also brings in a bit of disco too – not a full-on New York groove, but lots of clubby touches alongside the easy instrumental modes – smoothing out the earlier styles a bit more for a mainstream dancefloor. The approach is surprisingly appealing at times – and the three albums together serve up a whopping 46 tracks that include "In Zaire", "Dance Little Lady Dance", "Verde", "Silver Bird", "Taboo", "Mambo Jambo", "Black River", "Guadalupe Limbo", and "Arawak". ✨✧ Dave FrishbergOklahoma Toad (Japanese paper sleeve – 2CD version) ... CD
CTI/Muzak (Japan), 1970. Used 2CD/Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sublime little set from the legendary Dave Frishberg – his first vocal effort ever, and quite different than most of his later work! At the time of the record, Frishberg was a songwriter who penned such underground hipster jazz vocalist classics as "I'm Hip" and "Peel Me A Grape" – and the set has a clever, laidback feel that's very much in the spirit of those two great tunes – Dave singing and playing electric piano, clavinet, and organ – with some great jazzy touches by a group that includes Al Cohn on tenor, Bill Berry on trumpet, and Garnett Brown on trombone. There's a nicely offbeat feel to the record – both the tunes and the vocals – that reminds us a lot of the work of Bob Dorough – and part of this may have to do with the fact that Dorough cronie Stuart Scharf played guitar on the album. But the real genius is up to Frishberg, who's clever without being cloying – witty without ever being full of himself – and incredibly charming in the way he delivers the lyrics with a simple, honest approach. Titles include "The Prophet Of Doom", "Oklahoma Toad", "One Horse Town", "Van Lingle Mungo", "The Secret Of Successd", "Wallflower Lonely Cornflower Blue", and "Nasty Nasty Habit". Plus, this version of the album features the original producers mix – done with Margo Guryan – a completely different version of the record, right down to the song sequencing! CD

✨✧ Jay-ZBlack Album ... CD
Roc-A-Fella, 2003. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
"This here is the victory lap," raps Hove midway through The Black Album, his supposed career-capper (for this stage, anyway), and if nothing here immediately dazzles us to the core the way the best of his past singles have done, overall this is probably the most consistent front-to-back listen of all his albums. One of the nicest things about the Black Album is the brevity. As tight as the best of his recent output has been over the last couple of years – from singles, to album tracks, to guest spots – Jay-Z's simply been TOO productive, which has diluted the overall power of his presence. That issue is addressed right off the bat here – with a very manageable 14 tracks, no guest rhymers, and a consistent overall sound and mood thanks in part to strong production by Kanye West, 9th Wonder, Neptunes, Timbaland, Eminem (who's baroque synth productions are getting dangerously close to going stale, but it fits Jay-Z's dramatic finale theme very well), Rick Rubin and DJ Quik. It's a wildly disparate cast behind the boards, but this thing flows incredibly well thanks to Jay-Z's predetermined mission to make a great album, not just a hot record. Smart ass critics are gonna whine that Jay-Z hasn't reinvented the wheel here or anywhere else in his career, but that was never the point. The point HERE is to go out on his own terms (for the time being, anyway) after achieving so much more than he ever would have dreamed, and as the clear victor of all of his challengers without really taking any parting shots (why the hell would he bother, when he's already won?) We may still have to lean towards Blueprint as his late masterpiece, but this is way up there. "December 4th", "What More Can I Say?", "Encore", "Change Clothes", "Dirt Off Your Shoulder", "Threat", "Moment Of Clarity", "99 Problems", "Justify My Thug", "Lucifer", "Allure", "My First Song", and a couple of brief interludes. ✨✧ Jimmy G & The TackheadsFederation Of The Tackheads ... LP
Capitol, 1985. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure early 80s electro effort from George Clinton – all the more surprising, given how much he pretended to hate hip hop! At some level, Jimmy G & The Tackheads are mostly an 80s groove outfit – using lots of bass and keys to pop and lock the groove, while throwing in plenty of wikki-wikki instrumental touches to complicate things. And at another level, there's even a bit of Go-Go inspiration in the mix – particularly in the use of percussion on a few tracks, and the overall party feel of the set. But given the name of the group, and the kind of "street" feel of the album's graphics (which includes a lot of photos and images of early 80s street hustler tackhead culture), the album's also trying for a definite appeal to the old school crowd – with a look that's trying for a lot more cred than Clinton's own work of the time. Jimmy G's actually Jimmy Giles, a relation of Clinton – but from the sound of things, George and co-producer Steve Washington are firmly in control – on tracks that include "Clockwork", "I Want Your Daughter", "Family Funk", "Lies", and "Slingshot". Deep deep deep soul from The Knight Brothers – a wonderful duo who cut some fantastic sides for Chess Records in the 60s! The Brothers originally hailed from Washington DC, and came to Chicago by way of New York – somehow managing to pick up all the best bits of these geographic influences in the meantime! At one level, the Knights have a sound that's got lots of touches of southern soul – a pre-Sam & Dave approach to vocals that usually has one singer out front, and the other egging him on. But as they grew – and for a brief while adapted into the vocal group The Carltons – they also started to harmonize a lot more, and moved into a realm that was a lot like The Impressions at their best – sweet harmonies sung with a lot of depth, and often done with a heartbreaking quality that was really wonderful! Heavenly work from the enigmatic Laraaji – a musician who's best known for his ambient collaboration with Brian Eno, but who's also recorded a lot of sounds on his own! The package is the first we've ever seen to bring Laraaji's talents to light this strongly – as it not only features deeply detailed biographical notes, but also photos and sidebars on the different scenes and forces that have both shaped his music, and which have been shaped by him. Laraaji plays hammered autoharp, in a style that links together a range of global moments of expression – and which really moves the instrument far past its usual use in folk, to a much-deserved much-trippier territory. The early recordings are especially great, and the package also features some cassette tracks and later collaborations as well. A searing live set by Charles Mingus – a double-length performance recorded in Antibes during his classic years for Atlantic Records, but not issued by the label until many years later! The album's a great extrapolation of the sound that Mingus had forged on sessions for Columbia, Atlantic, and Candid – the latter label especially, as the tunes here are all quite long, and really put a lot of emphasis on the solo voices of the players in the group. Given that those players include Ted Curson on trumpet, Booker Ervin on tenor, and Eric Dolphy on alto sax, the sound here is proud and loud throughout – with plenty of fire from all three horns! Bud Powell makes a guest appearance on the set – and titles include "Prayer For Passive Resistance", "What Love", "I'll Remember April", "Folk Forms 1", and "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting". CD

Seminal work from the South American scene at the end of the 60s – by a key group who managed to forge a host of styles into their own unique sound! Traffic Sound were contemporaries of groups like Black Sugar, We All Together, Telegraph Ave, and some of the other leading lights of the Peruvian scene – and like those acts, they had a really fresh style that took influences from up north and transformed them with a really unusual sense of interpretation. The work on the set is certainly psychedelic and progressive at its core – but the group are also clearly bringing in styles from Latin, soul, and the growing jazz rock movement – resulting in some surprisingly complicated numbers that groove nicely at the best moments, and which never fail to delight throughout! Grapefruit (UK), 1966. New Copy 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from a real turning point in British music – a moment when the mod groups and singers of the year before were letting in a bit more freak and fuzz – yet all in ways that still kept the songs as short, tight, and tuneful as before! You might consider this work the big bang that set up a whole second generation of genius in the UK – the catchy sort of 45s that paved the way for longer jams on albums, progressive rock experimentation, mindbending psych, and even the hard rock modes that were just around the corner. You'll recognize a few of the names here as mid 60s mod heroes, but they're also mixed with some great lesser-knowns, all with the kind of deep dig that we love from these box sets on the Grapefruit label – right down to the massive booklet of notes that offers up track by track information on all the music. 84 tracks in all – with work by The Rockin Vickers, Yardbirds, Wimple Winch, John's Children, The Action, The Koobas, Fleur De Lys, The Favourite Sons, Keith Relf, The People, David Bowie, The Smoke, The Creation, Graham Bond Organization, Downliners Sect, The 5am Event, The Tomcats, The Majority, The In Crowd, Just Five, The Times, The Uglys, Outrage, and lots lots more! Matsuli (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most compelling albums we've heard from the African scene of the 70s – a rare set from a Soweto group, and one that's got a heavy dose of spiritual jazz in the mix! The album almost feels more like the kind of set you'd hear by a Paris group, extrapolating African sounds in the post-colonial era – or an American group, inspired by roots from the homeland – and the group sports some especially great work on tenor, played by Themba Koyana, a player we've never heard before! Rhythms are great, with lots of percussion, and some nice funky undercurrents at times – and other instrumentation includes organ, which often works well with the echoey production. The album does have some occasional vocals, but the main focus is instrumental, which is very jazzy too – and titles include "Itume Leng", "Anishilabi", "Lishonile", and "Emampondweni". Sofrito/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the hippest sounds we've ever heard from Guadeloupe – served up by Erick Cosaque – a singer, percussionist, and key figure in the gwo-ka genre – yet an artist who works in a special space that's all his own! The tunes here definitely have the heavy percussion of gwo-ka, but they also bring in plenty of elements of funk and soul – the latter from Erick's amazing vocal style, which has this really deep flow that's wrapped around a set of French and Creole lyrics, but which has amazing power even if you can't understand the language! There's lots of great elements on keyboards and electric bass, which further helps underscore the funkier part of the music – and the whole thing is the kind of wonderful blend we've always loved from the criss-crossing of cultures in Guadeloupe, but also in a mode that's head and shoulders above most of the rest. Titles include "Joue Zizipan", "Donatien", "Embawgo", "De Chate Cole", "De Ti Mo Pawol Cweol", "L'Heureux Noir", "Jean La Line La Clere", and "Desere Nou De May". CD

✨✧ Nico FidencoBlack Emanuelle – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (limited edition) ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most sweetly sexy soundtracks of the 70s Italian scene – an out and out classic from the legendary Nico Fidenco! The style here is quite striking – almost earthy at times, but warmly erotic at others – kind of a blend of rootsy percussion with some of the more electric touches you'd hear on other Italian scores – but all wrapped up with a really unique feel! The more electric cuts feature lots of isolated instruments, slowly gyrating basslines, choppy guitar, and cool electronic bits on keyboards – and the set list is quite different than the American issue of the soundtrack in the 70s on West End Records. Titles include "Of Your Body", "Emmanuelle's Theme", "Unavoidable", "Sudden Ride", "Wild Cry", "Rhythum Again", "Skin In The Wind", "Flute & Skin", "Black Rhythum", and "Thoughtless". 34 tracks in all – and a sweet fold-out set of notes! ✨✧ Pink FairiesPolydor Years (Never Never Land/What A Bunch Of Sweeties/Kings Of Oblivion/with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Floating World (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A trio of key albums from the Pink Fairies – served up with lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Never Never Land – the fantastic debut of the Pink Fairies – easily one of the shaggiest, headiest bands on the UK scene at the start of the 70s – and a group who rose from the ashes of the equally important Deviants! The record's an unusual mishmash of modes – a set that confidently swaggers between psych, hard rock, and maybe even a bit of proto-punk – very confident in its approach, and coolly compressed in the production, but never in the slick style that would dominate British rock more strongly in the mid 70s. The Fairies aren't afraid to let their freak flag fly, but they're also clearly moving past hippiedom too – on titles that include "War Girl", "Do It", "Say You Love Me", "Tack One Side Two", "Thor", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout", and "The Dream Is Just Beginning". What A Bunch Of Sweeties is filled with freaky fuzz from the Pink Fairies – a seminal UK group who were maybe trapped in a space between late psych and early glam – and somehow equally important to both! There's lots going on in the set – modes that are as offbeat as styles put forth by The Fugs in the late 60s, but a lot sharper overall from a musical perspective – especially in the way the group uses great guitar work and a few catchy numbers to sew the whole thing together – on titles that include "Portobello Shuffle", "Marilyn", "Pigs Of Uranus", "Walk Don't Run", "X-Ray", "I Went Up I Went Down", and "I Saw Her Standing There". Kings Of Oblivion is maybe the most fully-formed album from the legendary Pink Fairies – and a set that's got some really searing guitar from Larry Wallis – a melodic genius whose sound really holds things together, and gives the group a stronger focus than ever before! The guitar lines seem to bring out and amplify all the ideas the group were going for before – and maybe give the group a sense of darkness that they never fully reached – not hard rock cliche, but this tightness that's also completely individual – maybe like early Thin Lizzy at their best, yet in a completely different way. Titles include "I Wish I Was A Girl", "City Kids", "When's The Fun Begin", "Chromium Plating", "Street Urchin", and "Chamber Maid". Bonus tracks include "Going Down", "Walk Don't Run (first version)", "War Girl (alt mix)", "The Snake", "Do It (single mix)", "Uncle Harry's Last Freakout (alt mix)", "Well Well Well (alt mix)", "City Kids (alt)", and "Hold On (single)". Mindblowing work from SBB – billed by the label as "two progressive suites in which shattered glass eyes collide with the trio's hectic madness"! We can't really tell you at all what they mean by that – but we can say that the level of the record is right up there with the best work of this Czech power trio from the 70s – a keyboard-driven group who are equal parts prog and fusion, and who really make magic on the two extended tunes in the set! There's vocals on the record, but the side-long length of the tracks allows for a lot more instrumental moments – with some especially nice work from Jozef Skrzek as he stretches out on moog, Clavinet, and other keyboards – maybe giving Rick Wakeman a run for his money in the process! Titles include "Odejscie" and "Wolanie O Brzek Szkla". CD features two more shorter bonus tracks – "Ucisk W Dolku" and "Bitwy Na Obrazach". CD

✨✧ SecretsInfatuation – Singles & Demos 1966 to 1968 ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great early work from The Secrets – a UK group that features early contributions from later singer/songwriter Clifford T Ward – but in a style that's much more group-oriented overall! Ward's already a hell of a songwriter – and loads of the cuts here are under-discovered nuggets that sparkle at a level that only a rare few Brit records of this time can do – sweet, but never poppy – clever, but never too much so – and often with a heartfelt, emotional candor that we might link to the best by The Hollies and Zombies. And in fact, there's an instant charm here that definitely recalls Hollies at their best – a way of doing a heck of a lot with just a little, and really bringing forth special qualities in the tunes without resorting to overdone gimmicks or studio interference – although the production here is pretty darn groovy too. The collection features loads of singles from the group, plus rare demos and unreleased tracks – all with richly detailed notes in the best Cherry Red tradition. Titles include "Infatuation", "She's Dangerous", "Such a Pity", "I Suppose", "Sympathy", "I Think I Need The Cash", "The Gloria Bosom Show", "Looking Down The Glass", "The Same Applies To You", "Teacher", and "I Intend To Please". The book is similar to some of the Japanese discographies on the market – but it's got a special focus on that nation's long legacy of ultra-cool portable record players – featured here in models from the postwar years to the present, each one groovier than the next! There's lots more text in the book in Japanese, but there's plenty to enjoy if you can't read the language – as the book is very visual overall, and even has a section in back of special players that handle unusual formats and special records too. Book is 240 pages, full color, and looks as groovy on the inside as it does on the outside! Book

A fantastic little collection – and one that's maybe a lot more fun than you might expect! There's little material that's actually avant, and just a few that might fall into the more boring sides of the art rock spectrum – and instead, the set brings together work from the psych and early prog years by a host of British acts who were really willing to take a chance with their music! There's more than a few big names here, and a few big hits too – but those cuts are mixed with overlooked gems and album tracks that really get at the amazing creative explosion that was happening in British music at the time – a moment when things were sounding so different than just a few years before – but results that were surprisingly groovy and catchy too. As with other box sets on the Grapefruit label, the track selection is superb – and the whole thing comes with song-by-song notes that get at the history and special quality of each number – amidst 79 titles by artists who include Deep Feeling, Open Road, 9:30 Fly, Gnome Street, Matching Mole, Nirvana, Comus, Matching Mole, The Coxhill/Bedford Duo, Spring, The Velvet Frogs, Bachenkel, Third Ear Band, Woody Kern, Genesis, The Riot Squad, Dantalian's Chariot, Mighty Baby, Cressida, Rustic Hinge, Eyes Of Blue, Fuschia, Blonde On Blonde, and Ron Geesin. One of the coolest compositions we've ever heard from Delia Derbyshire – a special set of electronic compositions based around dreams, with lots of tape work and electronics from Delia, plus loads of eerie recitations as well! Each track features someone describing a dream – at a level that would be spooky enough on its own – but then the voice is often manipulated slightly, sometimes repeated – and mixed with the kind of dark, moody elements we love in some of Derbyshire's more instrumental music – including famous sound library records, and work for the BBC. We might well argue that for the early 60s, the album represents a far more evolved use of electronic music than was taking place elsewhere at the time – and the piece features five passages, "Running", "Land", "Falling", "Colour", and "Sea". Backings are great too – much more sophisticated than the usual funk combo backing, with elements that match the fuller charts of a 70s soul classic – on titles that include "Just Like Honey", "She's Mine (parts 1 & 2)", "For You", "So High", "Desperation", "Benediction", and "When A Grown Man Cries". A beautiful book on the decades of recorded output from one of our favorite composers ever – the legendary Michel Legrand – an artist known to most folks for his famous soundtracks of the 60s and 70s – but also a jazz musician, singer, and even a very groovy instrumental arranger! All those many aspects of Legrand's music are brought together here wonderfully – in a rich discography that's done in a similar style to some of the Japanese jazz discographies in our racks – but with maybe even a wider-ranging approach, given that Legrand's records were issued in so many countries over so many years! The style here is familiar if you know those other discographies – each record gets a listing with a reproduction of the cover in color, plus release date, label, catalog number, and even songs and other details. The book also features short reviews of many of the records, and longer text on Legrand – all of which is in Japanese – but the volume also balances things out beautifully for non-Japanese readers, with lots of photos and other beautiful images. The soundtrack section is especially great, as it also includes lots of rare singles and EP releases – and the book also features chapters on Legrand's jazz work, his vocal releases, live records, collaborations, musicals, and arrangements for a huge amount of singers. There's even a special sleeve gallery at the back, with lots more rare album covers in full color – and even a listing of all his scores for films. You get the classic dancehall rocker "Uptown Top Rankin" by Althea & Donna, "Rappin' & Rhymin'" by Paulette & Tanya Winley and the Harlem Rhythm Band's old school landmark "Rappin' & Rhymin'", the jazzed-up Homogenized mix of Black Sheep's early 90s masterpiece "Similak Child", Michel Legrand's funky French "Un Homme Est Mort" and lots more. Just a straight up, funky party on Compost Records! Other tracks include "Scratchin' 100 Speakers" by Daniel Sofer, ""Don't Hold Back" by Chanson, " Crazy Girl Pt. II" by Freddie Love, "Move On Up" by Greyhound and more! CD

Mr EchoesNeedful Things ... LP
Mr Echoes, 2019. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A pretty remarkable creative leap for Mr Echoes – one half of legendary Chicago hip hop production duo The Opus! On Needful Things he shifts gears a bit towards beats heavy electronica, but it's as distinctive and timeless as pretty much anything we'd expect from him. As far back as Rubberoom's classic, to this day underappreciated benchmark material, there was a slyly spacey vibe in the tersest, toughest moments, and comes out a bit more here. Beats are often at the forefront, but they're more varied in still and not wholly hip hop, with a dreamy keys and spacey synth vibe throughout. Includes "Lift Off", "Wolf", "Beyond The Walls", "Lotus Underwater", "Paul's Song", "Affliction feat PJ Temple, "Needful Things" and "Legacy" (produced by Opus partner Isle Of Weight).
