Rance Allen GroupBest Of The Rance Allen Group ... LP
Stax, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $8.99
Rance Allen was one of the greatest singers on Stax who never made it during the 70s – probably because he labored in obscurity on Stax's subsidiary Truth label, a gospel imprint where Allen was unjustly stuck because of his roots in the music. Truth is, his work had as much soul as it did gospel – probably even more so as the years wore on and he started to get more secularized. The tracks on this set are as good an introduction to Allen's work as you'll find – and they're filled with great piano work (acoustic and electric), plus loads of tracks sung in Allen's rich soulful style. Titles include "That Will Be Good Enough For Me", "There's Gonna Be A Showdown", "Ain't No Need of Crying", "I Belong To You", "Smile", "I Know A Man Who", and "I Got To Be Myself". Rance Allen GroupBrothers ... LP
Truth/Stax, 1973. Very Good ... $11.99
A lesser-known gem from Rance Allen and group – recorded during their incredible early run at Stax! The sound here seems even more powerful than on the group's first album – a wicked blend of gospel and soul, served up with relatively spare instrumentation that features keyboards and strings, but still plenty of space for Rance and the other Allen brothers to open up with some incredible harmonies. And indeed, there's vocal passages on here that not only crackle with Rance's amazing lead, but which also have the supporting voices soaring to the skies with the kind of sound you'd expect from The Dramatics or The Temprees at the time! Titles include "Get Your Lives Together", "Time For Playing", "For Once In My Life", "Be True", "Heaven Is Where The Heart Is", and "We're The Salt Of The Earth". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original green label pressing. Cover has some splitting in the top seam.)

✨✧ Rance Allen GroupStraight From The Heart ... LP
Stax, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A return to Stax by Rance Allen – his first album for the label after a stellar set for Capitol, and a much smoother set than before! Rance has learned from his work with Larry Mizell on Capitol, and is using a warmer glide on his tracks on this set – arrangements mostly done by producer Henry Cosby, used to kick Rance's sound up to a smoother modern soul kind of sound. The overall groove isn't as spacious as his work on Capitol, but the record's still pretty darn nice – and given Rance's always-great vocals, we tend to love just about anything he does. Titles include "Stand Up For Love", "I Belong To You", "Joy", "Security", "California Gold", "I Found A Friend", and "The Wheel Of Life". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cut corner and some light stains on back.)

✨✧ DJ RogersLove Brought Me Back (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1978. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums ever from the mighty DJ Rogers – one of the most positive, powerful voices in 70s soul music! The set's a sublime Rogers showcase all the way through – as DJ wrote, arranged, and produced the whole record – in partnership with the Earth Wind & Fire Kalimba Productions imprint – which is perfect placement for the set, as it shares all the best righteous energy with that famous group at its height! DJ's vocals are trained in the church – both technically and spiritually – but they soar out here in some secular lyrics that really help bring a sense of warmth and love to the universe – a really rare blend of modes from both sides of the fence that rivals the best 70s work by Rance Allen or Donny Hathaway. Backings are perfect – maybe even more focused and moving than on some of Rogers' previous albums – and titles include "Hold Me", "Sold On You", "When Love Is Gone", "Changed", "You Take Me Higher (Brazilian Lover)", "All My Love", and "Love Brought Me Back". CD features bonus tracks – "Love Brought Me Back (parts 1 & 2)", "Love Brought Me Back (12" mix)", and "All My Love (parts 1 & 2)". CD

La Section Rythmique with Harry Allen & Luigi GrassoLa Section Rythmique + 2 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A tight rhythm trio gets some really great help on horns – as La Section Rythmique records here with strong guest work on tenor from Harry Allen, and Luigi Grasso on alto sax! The core group have recorded before – but at some level, their strengths seem even more evident in the company of the saxophonists – with Guillaume Nouax on drums, Sebastien Giradot on bass, and David Blenkhorn on guitar – the last of whom brings some really beautiful colors to the session, and makes the music glow equally on swingers and ballads. Harry Allen's got a nice rasp in his horn – almost a late Coleman Hawkins sort of tone – and titles include "You N Me", "Blues Up & Down", "Step Right Up", "Wes Tune", "In The Still Of The Night", "New Orleans", and "One For Duke". Coleman HawkinsMemorial (aka Accent On Tenor Sax) ... LP
Musidisc (France), Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Fantastic work from Hawkins – recorded for a small label at a time when his star had fallen a bit, but with some AMAZING tone that really makes the album cook! The group's a combo that features piano and organ by Earl Knight, trumpet by Ernie Royal, trombone by Eddie Bert, and guitar by Sidney Gross – and the whole thing has a laidback blowing feel that really lets Hawkins hit some of those fantastic notes he keeps pulling out at the end of his career. If you've ever doubted why folks think Hawk's a genius, check this one out, and prepare to have your ears cook! Titles include "My Own Blues", "What's New", "Running Wild", "Blue Room", and "I'll Never Be The Same". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hypnotic Brass EnsembleHypnotic Brass Ensemble (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), 2009. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The amazing full length debut of Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – a cool combo from the Chicago scene who've been making some big waves around the world over the past few years! The brass-heavy group have a family legacy that links them to the Artistic Heritage Ensemble of Phil Cohran – and an approach to their music that mixes spiritual jazz, deep funk, and elements of New Orleans music too – a really unique style that has earned the group's rare singles some tremendous praise – and which is finally ready to step out fully in this wonderful album! The horns are even harder and heavier than before – honed through some touring around the globe, and brought into focus here beautifully – bristling with energy from the very first note. The set features guest appearances from Malcolm Catto, Tony Allen, Flea, and Damon Albarn – but the real strength of the record lies in the group's amazing horns and rhythms – on titles that include "War", "Gibbous", "Alyo", "Ballicki Bone", "Jupiter", "Marcus Garvey", "Party Started", "Sankofa", "Satin Sheets", "Hypnotic", and 2 versions of "Rabbit Hop". Tony FruscellaTony Fruscella (Jazzlore) ... LP
Atlantic, 1955. Near Mint- ... $4.99
The lasting testament of trumpeter Tony Fruscella – a great talent whose powers only flourished briefly on vinyl, and never so brightly as on this LP! The set's a well-composed one – gently grooving numbers arranged and written by Phil Sunkel, played by Tony and a group that includes Allen Eager on tenor sax. Eager's another talent who's not always represented as strongly as he should be on record – and this session is as great an appearance for him as it is for Fruscella. Titles include "Muy", "Old Hat", "Raintree Country", "Let's Play The Blues", and "Metropolitan Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Jared HallHallways ... CD
Hollistic Music Works, 2017. Used ... $6.99
The debut as a leader from trumpeter Jared Hall – and a set that very firmly announces his talents! Hall's had a recent legacy of work that includes both small group performances and large ensemble activity – and he really manages to bring that all into play here, as the set has this compositional vision that swings nicely between tight groovers and larger ideas – held strong by a quintet that includes Troy Roberts on tenor, Josh Allen on bass, Kyle Swan on drums, and either Martin Bejerano or Tal Cohen on piano. The cover, title, and everything else about the outside appearance of the record is somewhat understated – but musically, the whole thing bursts out nicely and really stays strong all the way through – on titles that include "Wanderer", "Visions & Dreams", "Brother Spiro", "Apehlion", "Tones For Jones", and "Allure". Jake Najor & The Moment Of TruthIn The Cut ... CD
Redwoods, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 9.99
Jake Najor's a mighty funky drummer – as you'll hear from the very first note on this set – a spark that sets a flame to the album's strong run of tunes in both a funky and instrumental mode, as Jake leads the group through a great assortment of small combo grooves! Most tracks feature a stripped-down version of the group – with either Fender Rhodes, organ, or Wurlitzer lines spinning out nicely next to fast-riffing guitar from Nick Costa – and at a few points you'll hear just a touch of horns, but mostly in a way that just augments the funky rhythms at the core! A few tunes have vocals – a song each with appearances from Jamie Allensworth, Burkey, and Mixmaster Wolf – the last of whom provides a great soulful start to the set. Titles include "Guantanamo Baywatch", "Grab A Soda", "Cruise Control", "Lagniappe", "Funkin For Jamacha", "Another Saturday", "Police Chase", and "High Costa Living". CD

Wayne ShorterAll Seeing Eye ... LP
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint- ... $16.99
An excellent set of some fairly out material – performed by Shorter with a group that includes Freddie Hubbard, Grachan Moncur, James Spaulding, Herbie Hancock, and a rare appearance by his brother Alan on flugelhorn! At times, the record builds into a sound that's freer and more challenging than on some of Shorter's other albums from the time – but it does so in more of the "new thing" mode that you'd hear on records from the time by Jackie McLean or Moncur, with an overall sense of purpose that really keeps the message clear. Features all original compositions by the Shorter brothers – and cuts include "Chaos", "Face Of The Deep", "Mephistopheles", and "Genesis". LP, Vinyl record album
