✨✧ La Section Rythmique with Harry Allen & Luigi GrassoLa Section Rythmique + 2 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tight rhythm trio gets some really great help on horns – as La Section Rythmique records here with strong guest work on tenor from Harry Allen, and Luigi Grasso on alto sax! The core group have recorded before – but at some level, their strengths seem even more evident in the company of the saxophonists – with Guillaume Nouax on drums, Sebastien Giradot on bass, and David Blenkhorn on guitar – the last of whom brings some really beautiful colors to the session, and makes the music glow equally on swingers and ballads. Harry Allen's got a nice rasp in his horn – almost a late Coleman Hawkins sort of tone – and titles include "You N Me", "Blues Up & Down", "Step Right Up", "Wes Tune", "In The Still Of The Night", "New Orleans", and "One For Duke". Los CamaroesLos Camaroes – A Journey Into Cameroonian Music (with bonus download) ... LP
Sonafric/Nubiphone (France), Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the funkiest groups we've ever heard from the Cameroon scene – a combo who play with a super-tight sound that often has as much interplay between the vocals as the instruments at the core! As you'd guess from the three guitarists on top of the van in the cover, the group's sound is heavy on guitars – often riffing in these funky ways as the players seem to challenge each other, and create this great flow that moves between American funk and more homegrown styles. Vocals come fast and furious, and often shift between group members – really keeping pace with the energy of all the other instruments too. Titles include "Boo A Nun Muna", "Special Nkumu Asenge", "Kodi", "Pitie", "Kundug Bidza Bidza", "Annie", "Bia Tak Ayi Los", and "Esele Mulema Moam". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes cool booklet of notes, and bonus download!)

Tony FruscellaTony Fruscella ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1955. Used ... $14.99
The lasting testament of trumpeter Tony Fruscella – a great talent whose powers only flourished briefly on vinyl, and never so brightly as on this LP! The set's a well-composed one – gently grooving numbers arranged and written by Phil Sunkel, played by Tony and a group that includes Allen Eager on tenor sax. Eager's another talent who's not always represented as strongly as he should be on record – and this session is as great an appearance for him as it is for Fruscella. Titles include "Muy", "Old Hat", "Raintree Country", "Let's Play The Blues", and "Metropolitan Blues". CD
(Out of print, 2016 SHM-CD pressing – includes obi!)

✨✧ Jake Najor & The Moment Of TruthIn The Cut ... CD
Redwoods, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Jake Najor's a mighty funky drummer – as you'll hear from the very first note on this set – a spark that sets a flame to the album's strong run of tunes in both a funky and instrumental mode, as Jake leads the group through a great assortment of small combo grooves! Most tracks feature a stripped-down version of the group – with either Fender Rhodes, organ, or Wurlitzer lines spinning out nicely next to fast-riffing guitar from Nick Costa – and at a few points you'll hear just a touch of horns, but mostly in a way that just augments the funky rhythms at the core! A few tunes have vocals – a song each with appearances from Jamie Allensworth, Burkey, and Mixmaster Wolf – the last of whom provides a great soulful start to the set. Titles include "Guantanamo Baywatch", "Grab A Soda", "Cruise Control", "Lagniappe", "Funkin For Jamacha", "Another Saturday", "Police Chase", and "High Costa Living". CD
