Ram John HolderBlack London Blues ... LP
Philips, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $33.99
A brilliant British set from Ram John Holder – not really blues at all, but a cool kind of crossbreeding of styles in the 60s London scene – almost the same mad mix of modes you might hear in The Equals! There's plenty of funk on the record – some great drums, bouncing basslines, and an overall tightness that's more gritty soul than blues – although there's definitely a bluesy bent at times too! Titles include "Brixton Blues", "Too Much Blues", "Pub Crawling Blues", "Wimpy Bar Blues", and "Hampstead To Lose The Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some light wear, vinyl is nice.)

Geno Washington & The Ram Jam BandHand Clappin Foot Stompin Funky Butt/Shake A Tail Feather/Hipsters Flipsters Finger Poppin Daddies/Runnin Wild (plus bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Pye/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
A huge package – four full albums by this excellent soul group – plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Hand Clappin Foot Stompin Funky Butt Live – filled with sockin soul from Geno Washington – an ex-American marine who recorded to big fame in the UK in the late 60s – working with the legendary Ram Jam Band, an act that rivaled some of the best American combos of the southern party circuit at the time! The approach here is certainly soul-based, but it's also something different – given the actual overseas origin of the recording – and in a way, the record's a perfect example of the influence that African-American military had in Europe in the 60s – as their presence on the continent really helped to shape and authenticate the sounds of some already-willing overseas combos. Geno's vocals are great, and the tracks are all upbeat and lively – very much what you'd expect from the title! Titles include "Philly Dog", "Ride Your Pony", "Road Runner", "Up Tight", "Land Of 1000 Dance", "Que Sera Sera", "Get Down With It", and "Willy Nilly". Shake A Tail Feather is a hard-smoking album that bears all the best 60s hallmarks of Geno Washington and his Ram Jam Band! The album's not as much a live effort as the previous two, but still keeps all the best spontaneous qualities in the music – a feel that really makes you think that Washington and the band were just partying in the studio, rattling the tunes off as they came to them – with all the confidence and swagger earned from a never-ending stream of gigs in the UK! Titles include "Raise Your Hand", "You Got Me Hummin", "Tell It Like It Is", "Use Me", "Understanding", "Knock On Wood", "I'm Your Puppet", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Hold On To My Love". CD also features 7 more bonus tracks – including "Seven Eleven", "Alison Please", "Each & Every Part Of Me", "Give Em A Hand", and "Dirty Dirty". Next is Hipsters Flipsters Finger Poppin Daddies – a bit of soul, a bit of R&B, a bit of beat group grooving – all wrapped up in a classic 60s set from Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band! Geno's American roots are inflected and appreciated strongly here – not just by the Ram Jam combo, who groove things up with plenty of influences from Atlantic and Sue Records – but also by the audience, who seem to go even more crazy for Geno than the crowds at the Apollo did for James Brown! Washington's vocals are somewhat rough and raspy – perhaps not the instant hit sort of sound for the US market, but a perfect fit for the rougher-edged grooves going on here – partyful soul that's never too poised, and which features lots of covers of 60s classics throughout. Titles include "Herk's Works", "Day Tripper", "I Can't Turn You Loose", "Shotgun", "Raise Your Hand", "Who's Foolin Who", "It's A Wonder", and "Wild Thing". Last up is one more live album – Runnin Wild – with 11 more tracks that include "Rock Me Baby (parts 1 & 2)", "High Heel Sneakers/Mary Ann", "Knock On Wood", "I Take What I Want", "Gimme A Little Sign/Raise Your Hand", "I Got You Babe", and "I Get So Excited". Plus, the package features 33 more bonus tracks – including later singles, rare b-sides, and some EP-only tracks! CD

Epic, 1977. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stranger things have happened, to be sure – but who'd have thought that the Kasenetz-Katz team, onetime hit bubblegum producers at Kama-Sutra, would score big with a 70s rock version of an old Leadbelly song? "Black Betty" did just that – and if Ram Jam are remembered for one thing on this planet, it will be their choppy guitar reading of this old folksy number, redone as kind of a choppy funky ZZ Top-ish track. The cut's offered here in the original mix and a remix from the 90s. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Margaret LewisReconsider Me – The Ram Singles & More Southern Gems ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Really great work from Margaret Lewis – a Louisiana singer/songwriter from the glory days of the indie label 45 scene – and one who works here with a very unique blend of rock, soul, and country modes! It's a bit hard to sum of Margaret's music in words – but lots of this material has hard-edged charms of the young Wanda Jackson – mixed maybe with some influences from the R&B scene at the time, particularly some of the hipper female singers in New Orleans! All the work here was recorded by the Ram Records label in Shreveport, but a good deal of it was unissued at the time – and the package also includes 13 tracks new to CD – combined with a fantastic set of notes that provide an overview of the unusual Lewis musical legacy. Titles include "John DeLee", "Lover's Land", "Bow Wow Puppy Love", "Cheaters Can't Win", "Shake A Leg", "One Today Another Tomorrow", "No No Never", "Reconsider Me", "You Said You Love Me", "Yea Yea Baby", "Hold Me", "Something's Wrong Baby", "From The Cradle To The Blues", and "Teardrop Valley". Paul McCartneyRam (2CD special edition) ... CD
Apple/Hear Music, 1971. Used 2CD ... $14.99
An early moment of genius from post-Beatles Paul McCartney – a solo set that's wonderfully diverse throughout – filled with the kinds of cool little twists and turns we loved in his late Beatles records, and in his 70s killers with Wings! There's a newly-emerging sweetness going on here – that great sound that started to emerge with the McCartney album – where Paul was a proud, put-together family guy – easily one of the most confident of his fab foursome, and able to bring an incredible amount of charm to just about any style he wanted to try! Some of the best cuts here are the mellower, more personal moments – still delivered with an amazing rock-solid sense of musicianship and production, too – and even the rockers, which might sound clunky in the hands of anyone else, manage to come off with a great deal of charm as well. Titles include the wonderfully playful "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" – plus "Too Many People", "Heart Of The Country", "Dear Boy", "Ram On", "The Back Seat Of My Car", and "Smile Away". 2CD version features some rare tracks and b-sides – including "Another Day", "Oh Woman Oh Why", "Little Woman Love", "Love For You", "Hey Diddle (Dixon Van Winkle mix)", "Great Cock & Seagull Race (Dixon Van Winkle mix)", "Rode All Night", and "Sunshine Sometime (earliest mix)". Horace Tapscott & Michael SessionLive in Avignon, France – 1989 ... LP
Village, 1989. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A beautiful lost performance from pianist Horace Tapscott – a set of duets with saxophonist Michael Session, recorded in France at the end of the 80s – and based around three long tracks, one penned by Tapscott himself – the other two by LA/Nimbus contemporaries Jesse Sharps and Nate Morgan! All tracks are nice and long, and have a flowing, spiritual vibe – handled in the piano/saxophone duet style with this really personal quality – more soulful and inside than some of Tapscott's solo or small group material from the decade – almost as if Session is really leading the energy, a bit like Marion Brown might in a duet record like this. Fantastic throughout – with titles that include "Little Africa", "Retribution Reparation", and "The Goat & Ram Jam". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Alice ColtraneUniversal Consciousness (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Impulse/Verve, 1971. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Alice Coltrane's most adventurous albums – a beautiful blend of organ, harp, percussion, and strings – much of which are transcribed for the album by Ornette Coleman! The most haunting aspect of the album is Alice's work on organ – spare, jagged, with a nascent soulful quality that's quite different from her piano work on other Impulse albums. The strings provide a sheet of sound – a shimmering backdrop to support Alice's work on the keys – moving forward tentatively, but growing in energy as the album progresses through a host of Eastern spiritual influences. Alice is way past jazz at this point – moving towards the new level of consciousness hinted at in the title, growing majestically on tracks that include "Oh Allah", "Sita Ram", "Hare Krishna", "Universal Consciousness", and "The Ankh of Amen-Ra". ✨✧ Al GreenAl Green Gets Next To You ... CD
Hi Records/Right Stuff, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Al Green's first major album, and a killer batch of Memphis soul tracks with a sound that's a bit rawer than later years. The formula for the hits is firmly in place – and Al's beautiful voice is swept up wonderfully in very sympathetic production by the great Willie Mitchell. Although Mitchell had worked fine on his own before the record, it's his work with Green that really pushes him to the top of the soul hall of fame – as it's hard to imagine how anyone could have come up with a better showcase for Al's amazing voice. Proof of this can be heard on the record's great original tunes by Green – like "All Because", "I'm A Ram", "You Say It", and the classic "Tired Of Being Alone" – as well as on covers like "Driving Wheel", "Can't Get Next To You", and "Light My Fire". One of the strangest records in the solo career of Paul McCartney – an all-instrumental reworking of his album Ram – issued here under the name of the mysterious Percy Thrillington! The album circulated very poorly at the time, but is a real tribute to the growing genius of McCartney in the studio – with so many elements here that would open up even more strongly in the brilliant Wings records to come. ✨✧ VariousBobo Yeye – Belle Epoque In Upper Volta (3CD set) ... CD
Numero, 1970s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious projects we've ever seen from Numero – and that's saying a lot, given some of their other releases! This package is equal parts cultural document and musical treasure trove – a heavy book full of photos from a time when Upper Volta was stepping past its colonial history, and finding a new cultural identity as an independent nation – presented alongside a rich array of the sounds that were shaping the scene at the time! The cover image has a feel that's maybe older than its 70s vintage – and some of the music does, too – relatively rootsy at points, with heavy percussion, riffing guitar, and jazzy inflections on some of the horns – and a bit less polished and produced than work coming from scenes like Nigeria or South Africa at the same time. The whole thing's similar to Numero's Light On The Southside set – but maybe even better, as the music here is even more unique – and the images are ones that bring forth a culture we never would have experienced otherwise. Titles include "Air Volta" and "Mama Soukous" by Volta Jazz, "He Ya Wannan" by Ouedraogo Youssef, "Si Tu Maime" and "Ram Passomaye" by Coulibaly Tidiani & Dafr Star, "Milaoba" by Les Imbattables Leopards, and "Gentlemen Doromina" by Echo Del Africa. 3CDs, 37 tracks, and a hardcover 176 page book! Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 10s/1920s/1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Caribbean styles hit the American scene – then get transformed into something completely different in this huge collection of recordings that span styles that include jazz, Latin, R&B, soul, and blues! In some cases, the Caribbean element comes through in the song structure – which might be lifted directly, then reworked for an American audience. But at other times, the influence is more in the rhythms or instrumentation – used as inspiration to then create something new – a bit in the way that American soul would provide the inspiration for reggae in the 60s. The package has the usual fantastic Fremeaux presentation – with a big booklet of historical notes, in both French and English, to support 66 titles that include "Jamaica Farewell" by Sam Cooke, "Salty Fish Aki Rice" by Ruth Wallis, "Bajan Girl" by Lionel Belasco, "Sly Mongoose" by Sam Manning, "El Gallero" by Dioris Valladares & Angel Viloria, "El Mambo Diablo" by Tito Puente, "Hey Little Girl" by Professor Longhair, "Un Poco Loco" by Bud Powell, "Chee Koo Baby" by Lloyd Price, "Shrinking Up Fast" by Camille Howard, "Ojai" by Joe Lutcher, "Salee Dame" by Albert Nicholas & Baby Dodds, "Inside" by Hector The Ram, "Run Come See Jerusalem"b y Stan Wilson, "I Learn A Merengue" by Robert Mitchum, "Afro Blue" by Cal Tjader, "La Maricutana" by Damiron & Chapuseaux, "Magical Joe" by Herb Jeffries, "Begin The Beguine" by Charlie Parker, "Make It Do" by Slim Gaillard, "Guitarambo" by Mickey Baker, and "Don't Touch Me Nylon" by The Charmer (aka Louis Farrakhan). ✨✧ VariousJamaica To Toronto – Soul, Funk, & Reggae 1967 to 1974 ... CD
Light In The Attic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A mindblowing musical discovery – funky music made in Canada by ex-patriot Jamaicans – easily some of the most obscure post-colonial grooves we've ever dug! The sound here is a lot less reggae-based than you'd expect – as most of the tunes are in a really nitty gritty funky 45 sort of mode – filled with strong influences from American soul of the late 60s and early 70s, but often done with a style that's a bit dirtier and fuzzier, especially at the bottom of the rhythms. There's a few traces of Jamaican production styles on the records, but overall the album's more like finding a lost stash of rare 45s from some smaller American funk scene – all work that's totally darn fresh, and beautifully presented here in a lavish booklet filled with enough notes and vintage images to rival the work coming out of the Numero camp of late! Great stuff all around, with titles that include "Chips Chicken Banana Split" and "Fugitive Song" by Jo Jo & The Fugitives, "Eternal Love" by The Sheiks, "Memories" by Noel Ellis, "Right On" and "I Wish It Would Rain" by The Cougars, "Grand Funk" by Jackie Mittoo, "Love Is The Answer" by Ram, "You're So Good To Me Baby" by Eddie Spencer, "Mr Fortune" by The Hitch-Hikers with Mighty Pope, "Fire (She Need Water)" by Wayne McGhie & The Sounds Of Joy, and "I Believe In Music" by Bob & Wisdom. Nimbus, 1987. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A lost session of spiritual jazz – recorded in LA in the latter half of the 80s, but with a soaring, righteous vibe that's right up there with the 70s scene! The group here is incredible – an all-star array of the best talents working for Nimbus Records – Nate Morgan on piano, Rickey Kelly on vibes, Jesse Sharps on reeds, Danny Cortez on trumpet, Joel Ector on bass, and Derek Roberts on drums – all moving with the cohesiveness of a well-honed small combo, in territory that's right in line with some of Morgan's most glorious recordings for the label! The use of Kelly on vibes is especially nice – as he's a player we've always loved, but hardly ever get to hear in a setting this ambitious – and his presence on the record makes the whole thing sound even more magical and majestic. Tracks are quite long, with a soaring, searching feel – driven on strongly by Morgan's piano, and topped by some great explorations by Sharps. Really beautiful electronics from the enigmatic Guy Skornik – an artist that we mostly know for his quirky concept record Pour Pauwels, but who sounds here like some of the best electronicians of the German scene of the 70s! All tracks are long and spun out – electronic, but with acoustic elements in the mix – maybe in a mode that's similar to the 70s soundtrack creations of Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream, or Vangelis – but darker, too – most likely because the music was composed for an obscure film by Alexander Jodorowsky! Yet the music here hardly needs images on a screen – as Skornik's created these wonderfully evocative passages, created with some help from Steve Hillage and members of Cossi Anatz. Tremendous work from Joshua Abrams – a set that's very different than some of his other work in recent years, but every bit as great! The set's got a lean group – Abrams on bass, Jeff Parker on guitar, Gerald Cleaver on drums, and the great Ari Brown on tenor – of Awakening fame – a group that delivers a more stripped-down version of some of Josh's more spiritual ideals – but in ways that also touch base with more conventional jazz expression! Make no mistake, there's nothing conventional about this set – the approach is very unique, and very striking – and the presence of the younger musicians really sets Ari Brown on fire, and reminds us of what a great soloist he can be when he's pushed to his limits. A really fantastic album from bassist Joshua Abrams – a set that may well be his greatest to date – and that's saying a lot, given all the other work he's given us in recent years! The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". CD

Idris Ackamoor & The PyramidsShaman ... CD
Strut (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A tremendous return to form for reedman Idris Ackamoor and his Pyramids group – and a record that we love every bit as much as his classic material from the 70s! There's a power, righteousness, and urgency to this album that we haven't heard from Ackamoor in years – very much the kind of material that's both a message and a medicine for the planet – of the sort that first inspired Ackamoor's generation in the 70s – and which is rarely carried off in a contemporary context this well! Idris plays tenor, but also delivers some surprisingly wonderful vocals and a few very powerful spoken parts too – and the rest of the lineup features Margaux Simmons on flute, Bobby Cobb on guitar, Ruben Ramos Medina on bass, Jack Yglesies on percussion, Sandra Poindexter on viola and violin, and Giole Pagliaccia on drums. The vibe here is like the vintage Black Fire Records label at its best – and titles include "Salvation", "Theme For Cecil", "When Will I See You Again", "Shaman", "Tango Of Love", "Dogon Mysteries", and "The Last Slave Ship". Four Flies (Italy), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
One of the funkiest soundtracks we've ever heard from Alessandro Alessandroni – a set that clearly shows he'd been listening to the score for Shaft, as well as a host of 70s sound library music too! There's lots of great Italian cop/crime grooves on the set – done at an understated level that's almost better than more familiar work of the genre – often strongly focused on the core rhythms, which are lean and plenty darn funky – bad-stepping with instrumentation that's often small combo funky jazz more than it is the bigger orchestrations of American cop scores. Titles include "Cop's Blood", "Amusement", "Duke Soul Jazz", "Tema Di Susie", "Club Jazz", "Palance", "Knell", "Sbirro In Fuga", and "Luxury". Features the never-issued bonus cut – "Tema Di Susie #2 (suspance version)". LP, Vinyl record album

Stunning rare work from Alessandro Alessandroni – a soundtrack talent who first flourished in the 60s, but really hit his stride in the sound library scene of the 70s! Alessandroni has a great way here of mixing the warm and the sweet, the funky and the melodic – tunes that are short and simple, but always pretty darn groovy – with a sweet, slinky style that's a great extension of the funkier modes of both French and Italian cinema at the start of the 70s – well-placed basslines that really set the score, peppered with just the right bits on guitar or keyboards – and never overdone, so that the grooves are spacious enough to really let you appreciate all the right touches! ✨✧ Mose AllisonTransfiguration Of Hiram Brown (with bonus track) ... CD
Columbia, Early 60s. Used ... $29.99
One of Mose's most sophisticated album, and one that has him going way past his usual "folksy jazzy" style, into a realm that touches on Monk-like modernism. The whole first side is Allison's extended "Hiram Brown" suite, which mixes vocal and instrumental passages in an extremely haunting way. The flipside features shorter versions of standards – some vocal, some instrumental – but all with more of a moderist sound than his earlier Prestige recordings. Nice stuff, and one that you don't see that often. CD

A classic collaboration between Josi Ndlovu and Andre Abrahamse – both artists who had long roots in a variety of West African groups and projects before this set – and find a way to draw on that work while also finding new energy together in the studio! The tunes have a subtle, soulful sort of vibe – not really Zamrock or Afro Funk, but instead this mellow melding of those modes with others – handled with a nicely glistening production style that's never slick or commercial, but which really finds the best way to make the mellower elements shine. The set's got more than a few message-oriented tracks – which led to it's banning in a number of African nations – and titles include "Children Of Today", "Zimbabwe", "Afrodisco", "Dreaming & Scheming", "Everybody's Trying To Put Me Down", and "Motherless Child". Freaky fuzzy guitars from the great Jerry Cole – working here under the name of The Animated Egg – not a real group, but a one-off studio project – yet one that is filled with plenty of great guitar, and some surprising rock funk grooves! The music is much trippier than Jerry's famous surf work – more fuzz on the amps, and a romping sort of rhythm that often takes these tunes right into Cherrystones funky rock territory, which is always treat for ears like ours – and the music veers between hard 60s instrumentals and modder Now Sound territory – thanks to some burning organ alongside the tight guitar and drums! A great blend of Saharan and Ethiopian guitar styles – the former played by Alhousseini Anivolla, the latter by Girum Mezmur – working together here in a set of intertwining solos and nicely snakey grooves! There's a really seductive feel to the record, right from the start – and although Alhousseini sings a bit, the main attraction is the guitars – used here in ways that really break from more familiar Tuareg modes, and which seem to inspire a new sort of flexibility of expression, as both players really reach out on their instruments! There's a bit of added percussion, mandolin, and krar on the record – but things are nicely spare overall, on tunes that include "Toumast Enkere", "Isouwad", "Awash/Ammalele", "Asalam", and "Algher". Verve, 1957. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 34.99
Gentle-going genius from the later years of Satchmo's career – a session that has Louis on trumpet and vocals, backed by the Oscar Peterson Trio! Peterson's usual group with Herb Ellis and Ray Brown is expanded slightly for this outing – bringing in Louis Bellson on drums to syncopate the tunes a bit more strongly, and give them that gently swinging rhythm that always works well with Armstrong's style. The real surprise, though, is Louis' voice – which is simple, almost elegant at times – and free from some of the gimmicks of other 50s sessions, or the too-playful style of his better-known duets of the period. We really love his gentle, honest approach to the lyrics here – on tunes that include "I'll Never Be The Same", "Moon Song", "What's New", "There's No You", "You Go To My Head", "That Old Feeling", and "Let's Fall In Love". A tremendous recording from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – done during the same Paris stretch as their Great Black Music classics on the BYG/Actuel label – and a set that easily matches, if not tops, those classics! You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. One of the grooviest Dorothy Ashby albums of the 60s – a set that has her already-great jazz work on harp backed by Chicago soul arrangements from Richard Evans – all in a blend that's somewhere in the territory of the Soulful Strings, but even groovier! And as an added bonus, Odell Brown even plays a bit of Fender Rhodes on the record – which sounds especially great! Both Ashby and Evans are at the height of their powers here – mixing together bits of jazz, soul, and trippier elements in a sublime late 60s Cadet Records blend – one that's carried off perfectly on the original tunes "Truth Spoken Here", "Tornado", "Cause I Need It", and "Just Had To Tell Somebody" – but which also sounds great on some of the album's cool covers too! Other titles include Brazilian numbers "Reza" and "Canto De Ossanha" – both of which are transformed in Dorothy's hands – plus "This Girl's In Love", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", and "Windmills of Your Mind"! The set was mixed at Fallout Shelter, and has this really heady brew of deep dubby currents with occasional roots-inspired vocals – although those often get pretty abstracted into the mix. Instrumentation includes work from Vin Gordon on trombone, Brinsley Dan on guitar, Tony Gad on bass, and Drummie Zeb on drums – which often get this great splashy sound in the production. One of the first big moments of Albert Ayler's work in the jazz mainstream – and a record that doesn't dim his greatness at all from the earlier sides recorded for ESP! The album's got a sharply angular sound that more than lives up to its vibrant cover image – a well-honed approach to improvisation, showcased by Ayler in a set of recordings done upon his return from work on the European scene. The material was recorded on two different dates – featuring two different groups: one with Alan Silva, Beaver Harris, and Joel Friedman; the other with Donald Ayler, Henry Grimes, and Michel Sampson. Titles are long, with the searing emotional sound that Ayler was peaking at during this time – and titles include "For John Coltrane", "Change Has Come", and "Truth is Marching On". A wonderfully soulful session from percussionist Babatunde Lea – and a shining example of the warm spirits and cross-cultural experimentation going on in the Bay Area scene of the 70s! The record mixes 70s soul jazz with bits of funk, Latin jazz, and breezy west coast touches – making for an album that's got some of the earthy charm of work on labels like Strata East or Black Jazz, mixed with the tighter soulful production of some of George Duke's early 70s sides for MPS. The vibe is incredible – a beautiful mix of warm vocals, tight soloing, and message-oriented grooves – and the whole thing's great all the way through! Rare live work from Back Door – a Brit trio with plenty of connections to the blues rock scene of the time, but one who has a fair bit of jazzy undertones too! The live set's presented by Alexis Korner, who also plays some guest guitar on the record – but the core sounds come from the heady trio of Ron Aspery on saxes, Colin Hodgkinson on bass, and Tony Hicks on drums – with vocals from both Aspery and Hodgkinson too! The tracks arguably have a bit more bite than the group's recordings for Warner Brothers at the time – and the set's very well recorded, and pulled from the vaults of the BBC. CID/Far Out (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 19.99
A very weird record – and an odd parody of both Os Novos Baianos and Caetano Veloso! The album's recorded live, and it's very much in the spirit of early work by Os Novos Baianos – with loads of tunes that have a funky samba style, with some nice rough touches – but there's also a laugh track to the set, clearly marking the record as a comedy effort! From what we know, the set's a parody of the artists named in the title, and their laidback approach to music – but since we can't really understand the lyrics, we just enjoy the grooves – as the record's got plenty of strong rootsy groovers that stand out, even if you can't get the jokes! Magically moody music from Richard Band – sounds that are maybe a bit less creepy than image on the cover, but which transform nicely as the set goes on! Many of these cuts are longish – almost like mini-suites of soundtrack themes – often with strings used in these nicely-stepping ways – familiar and dramatic at some points, but more offbeat at others – with the most amazing highlights being these weird vocal bits – which sound like more atmospheric musings from the folks who live in Whoville from the Grinch cartoon! An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". Amazing work from the new version of The Bar-Kays – a group who reformed to become a combo as heavy as any of the best funky groups from Detroit, LA, or New York at the time! There's a style here that's a sweet Memphis distillation of ideas bubbling under in music by Sly Stone, Funkadelic, and others – taken to new territory here by a group that was already steeped in 60s soul instrumental sounds! The cuts show a great ear for simple hooks and playful instrumental twists and turns – still with a bit of the trumpet used on Bar-Kays work of the past, but more in a groove that lets the guitar step out nicely with psychedelic soul undercurrents! Gato BarbieriLast Tango In Paris (180 gram pressing) ... LP
AMS (Italy), 1972. New Copy ... $28.99 29.99
One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Titles include many versions of the "Last Tango" theme, plus the tracks "Girl In Black", "Jeanne", "Why Did She Choose You?", "It's Over", and "Fake Ophelia". LP, Vinyl record album

Roundtable (Australia), 1971. New Copy ... $32.99
A beautiful and exotic score from the great John Barry – one that never had as much circulation on record as some of his bigger hits of the time, but which is equally well deserving of praise! The music is done for Nicolas Roeg's film Walkabout – set mostly in the Australian outback – and Barry mixes these breathy orchestrations with some rootsier acoustic elements – in ways that really echo the contrast of the characters in the narrative, and remind us of the sensitivity that Barry can have at his most sophisticated moments. Three tracks differ slightly from this approach – the seven minute long fuzzy freakout "Electronic Dance", which is totally great in its own sort of way – the experimental echoey "Professional Crumble" – and the vocal number "Los Angeles", kind of a hippy dippy tune. Capitol, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. The Beasties' masterpiece – and one of the original nightmares for sampling opponents everywhere – the cut & paste hip hop classic Paul's Boutique! The Dust Brothers unapologetic way of weaving very famous samples with soul, funk and film score obscurities would steal the show if not for the infectious, boisterous rhymes of the Beastie Boys – they couldn't possibly have cared less about alienating the massive frat boy fan base built with License To Ill, and it's a joy to behold. It's one of those mindblowing pop transformations on par with the Beatles (who the Beasties and Dust Brothers were so brazen to sample several times on this album) and the Beach Boys on the pop maturation scale from earlier hits to later artistry – even if the wild lyrics and deft back & forth rhymes by the Beasties aim to be the goofy antithesis of maturity. From classic rock dinosaurs to soul and disco classics, from the Jaws score to "Dueling Banjos", it all finds it's way into the beatcraft – and both mainstream pop and underground hip hop are better now because of this record. All these years after Paul's Boutique, when the world of difficult, expensive sample clearance could've kill the layers of pop pastiche sound bites that made P's B such a brilliant statement, the soul and funk samples are still piled on in abundance on this one (albeit with a more electro studio built backdrop), as are the block rockin' party rhymes – even if the tone is serious and strident in spots. There are no attempts at live funky jazz or punk rock this time – this may be the Beasties' most classifiable hip hop album in decades. Tracks include the great throwback single "Ch-Check It Out", "Right Right Now Now", "3 The Hard Way", "It Takes Time To Build", "Rhyme The Rhyme Well", "Hey F**k You", "Triple Trouble", "Oh Word?", "That's It That's All", "All Lifestyles", "Shazam!", "An Open Letter To NYC" and more. Hard-driving work from UK sound library hero Brian Bennett – an artist who gave us so much great funky work at the start of the 70s, and who's still going strong here at the other end of the decade! Both records are mighty nice – a mixture of familiar funk with some deeper tones that are equally compelling – almost with the full flourish of a film soundtrack in scope,a nd with a good focus on some of the strongest standout numbers, which are occasionally presented with a bit of variation. Instrumentation is a mix of keyboards, guitar, horns, and some great low-end elements – and the package features both albums, with titles that include "Eye Opener", "Girl Alone", "Pussy Foot", "In Danger", "Routine Check", "Villain", "Hip Joint", "Psychopath", "Thrash", and "Heavy Traffic". Very groovy work from these two Brit sound library greats – loads of funky tunes, and great keyboards too – all served up in a massively funky record that was never issued to the public at large! Had this set hit the real record racks in 1974, it might well have challenged some of the greatest material from George Duke or Herbie Hancock – as the tunes are mostly funky, and feature lots of wonderful work on a wide variety of keyboards – sometimes getting all cool and wigged-out, even when the grooves are upbeat – a bit like Herbie in his Sextant years! George Benson is no spring chicken – but damn, he sounds plenty darn youthful here – working at the Ronnie Scotts club in London with some tight jazz funk backing! Benson sings as much as solos on guitar – and the whole thing is a great throwback to the sound of his 70s records – both in terms of the choice of tunes, and the overall spirit – that undeniable charisma that pushed George from the soul jazz underground to superstardom – a quality that's never let up over the years. Fantastic interplay between a very free trio – Josh Berman on cornet, Jason Roebke on bass, and Paul Lytton on percussion – really opening up on two side-long improvisations! Berman can work in more arranged settings, but he's very free here – and expressing himself with this amazingly bold sense of phrasing on the cornet – with energy that just builds and builds as the music goes on! Lytton's a joy, as always – with percussive elements that have a crackle that almost reminds us of some of his electronics, too – clearly a sonic sensibility inspired by that side of the spectrum – rounded out by deeper, more soulful sounds from the bass of Roebke. The set features two improvisations – "Padova" and "Trondheim" – one recorded in Italy, the other in Norway. LP, Vinyl record album

Jose Roberto BertramiThings Are Different ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2001. New Copy ... $7.99
New work from the legendary founder of Azymuth! Jose Roberto Bertrami's keyboards have graced dozens of Brazilian jazz sessions over the past 30 years – not only with his famous combo Azymuth, but also on albums by other Brazilian singers and instrumentalists of the 70s and 80s. This new set on Far Out is Bertrami's first under his own name for the label – and although Azymuth have recorded often for Far Out, this album's got a feel that's quite different from their work. Bertrami's going for a smooth glossy finish here – working keyboard magic over sly soulful grooves, hitting a vibe that reminds us a lot of classic work by 70s Americans like Bobby Lyle or Rodney Franklin, showing that Bertrami's got more than a bit of soul in his work, when he's given the chance to show it off. Titles include "Bluff Dancing", "Tarde Em Itacuruca", "Dificil Te Dizer", "Things Are Different", "Partido Alto No 3", "Mamao Com Acucar", and "Ceu E Mar". CD

Jose Roberto Bertrami & His Modern SoundAventura ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2009. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A different groove than usual for Jose Roberto Bertrami – and a record that definitely lives up to the promise of its title! Bertrami's really broken free from the regular Azymuth groove on this set – much more so than on some of his recent solo albums – playing here with a vibe that's very jazzy at times, with a range of different modes – mod one minute, funky the next, and sweetly straight at other points! Jose Roberto handles his familiar Fender Rhodes on most tracks – but also plays a bit of organ and acoustic piano as well – and other instrumentation includes guitar, bass, and drums – plus added horns on some of the fuller, funkier tracks. A few tunes feature some great wordless vocals from Bertrami – scatting along with his keyboards in a warm and breezy way – and production on the set is great, thanks to the Far Out touch – never too smooth, and quite different from any of Bertrami's albums recorded in the US. Titles include "Laranjeiras", "Choro", "No Tempo Da Bossa", "O Pescador", "Ecstatic 70", "Brilliante", "Eighties Times", "Aventura", and "Maixa". CD

A bit blues, a bit jazz – and a singer with a style unto her own – the amazing Big Maybelle, one of the greatest artists to record for Okeh Records in the 50s! This well-done collection pulls together every single Maybelle recorded for the R&B powerhouse back in the day – a motherlode of great work that easily puts her right up there with Lavern Baker or Ruth Brown as one of the great female singers of the 50s. Black HeatBlack Heat (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... About January 22, 2021 (delayed)
A searing debut from Black Heat – one of the best funk acts to record for Atlantic during the 70s, and a tight little group with a sound that's a mixture of New Orleans funk and New York heavy! The album's got a bit of vocals – figuring in on about half the tracks – but the main focus here is definitely instrumental – with a strong emphasis on choppy guitar, sweet organ licks, and cooking horn solos on trumpet, tenor, and flute – the last two of which are played by David Newman – not normally a member of the combo, but a great guest for this session! The sound is very tight, but never slick – and often recorded with an earthiness that recalls some of the best indie label funk of the period – like the kind of grooves you might find over at Perception/Today – with all the trippiness that might imply. Titles include "Chip's Funk", "Wanoah", "Barbara's Mood", "Chicken Heads", "The Jungle", "Send My Lover Back", "Honey Love", and "Time Is Gonna Catch You". LP, Vinyl record album

Enterprise/4 Men With Beards, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 21.98
Excellent heavy funk from Stax! Black Nasty were one of the heaviest groups on the label – with a rock-solid guitar-based groove that went even farther than the Bar-Kays, who were no slouch in the guitar department themselves! The grooves are all slow to midtempo, with the band coming down hard on the downbeats, jamming away in a style that sounds more like heavy Detroit Westbound than sweetly soulful Memphis. Most all cuts have vocals – sung in a shouting style by the band that works well with the tripped-out hooks of the songs. This was the only album the band ever cut, but it's become a fast favorite among those who like their funk raw. Tracks include "We're Doin Our Thing", "Rushin Sea", "Booger The Hooker", "Black Nasty Boogie", "Nasty Soul", and "Getting Funky Round Here". LP, Vinyl record album

Brian Blade's a drummer, but the set is definitely the work of a warm fellowship in jazz – a well-matched group of players that includes Myron Walden on alto, Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano, John Cowherd on acoustic piano and Wurlitzer, and Christopher Thomas on bass – all working through mostly original material by Blade that has this slow burn and soulful sparkle – often mellow, but without every being too laidback – and produced by Daniel Lanois with a really great overall sense of sound. Art BlakeyMoanin (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... On April 9, 2021
One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! This transitional version of the Jazz Messengers included two parts – Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons – of the holy Morgan/Shorter/Timmons trilogy, and it's also got the added bonus of Benny Golson on tenor, who was at the height of his power at this point. The record really shines in ways that few Blakey albums shone since his days with Horace Silver – in that it's a forum for fresh new writing, most importantly Golson's landmark compositions "Blues March" and "Along Came Betty", and Timmons' instant classic "Moanin". The whole album's wonderful, though, and Golson's edgey modernism adds a strong dimension to the group's usual soulful romping groove! (And in fact, as a tribute to the group's success, the album was initially named Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but quickly retitled Moanin in this version, after the big hit single!) A beautiful take on Brazilian guitar modes from earlier years – a set that has Leonardo Boccia first stepping out in an acoustic vibe that echoes roots from Baden Powell and Luiz Bonfa – then has the musician working alongside the vocals of Sueli Sodre, plus added percussion and effects – all in a way that creates this magical interplay of guitar and voice! The approach is a bit like some of the more experimental tracks that Joyce recorded over the years, but the album is also a bit more varied too – as Boccia plays keyboards at a few spots, adding just a bit of electricity into this mostly-acoustic affair – on titles that include "Terra E Povo", "Mae Natureza", "Lenda Do Sertao", "Urucungo", "Cancao Para Iracema", "Durma Estrelinha", and "Choro Fantasia". One of the most interesting records we've ever heard from pianist Joe Bonner – a set that still has all the long, spiritual lines of his excellent albums from the 70s – but which also showcases Bonner's ear for larger arrangements – as he brings in trumpet, trombone, flute, and a bit of strings to his own work on piano, with bass from Paul Warburton and drums from J Thomas Tilton! There's a sense of majesty here that's a nice expansion past the vibe of previous Bonner records – while all the soul and spirit is intact – very Strata East overall. A great little set from New Orleans legend James Booker – a previously unissued session from 1973 – recorded in LA with a great array of well-matched players! Booker's on piano, playing with a chunky, rough-edged groove – pretty funky at times, thanks especially to the great John Boudreaux on drums – best known for his classic lines on early work by Dr John! Other players on the date include Alvin Robinson on guitar, David Lastie on sax, and Jessie Hill on tambourine and vocals – and although the album never got the final studio polish it might have, were it released at the time, that aspect actually makes it great – and helps it retain all of its most rough-edged moments. David BowieDiamond Dogs (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Parlophone, 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $21.99
David Bowie at his most sinister for the 70s – a landmark set that combines the harder rocking sound of the Ziggy Stardust years with the more sophisticated theatrics of Aladdin Sane – in a style that features some of the darkest, most political work of Bowie's career! There's a depth to the record that goes way beyond the silly, sensational cover image – and there's also a sonic complexity that's wonderful too – a songs slide into each other with a deftness that never fails to amaze us! The album grew out of a failed project based around George Orwell's famous book 1984 – but the rights to that story were denied by the family – so Bowie went in his own directly, and honestly came up with work that was far better than if he'd done any sort of slavish reading of the novel (Rick Wakeman famously failed in that territory – and the Eurhythmics fared just slightly better.) The whole thing's great, and titles include "Diamond Dogs", "1984", "Sweet Thing", "Candidate", "Rebel Rebel", and "Big Brother". LP, Vinyl record album

David BowieSpace Oddity (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Parlophone, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $21.99 23.98
An amazing departure for David Bowie – hardly the kind of record you would expect from his oboe-filled tunes of a few years before – and really the start of the groundbreaking, earthshaking, reinventionist era of his genius! There's a spacious, soaring quality to Space Oddity that's every bit the kind of magical music you might hope for in a set recorded at the close of the 60s – a shift into new modes, new sounds that seem to suck up all the best influences in rock from the previous few years, but fuse it into a new cosmic vision for the next decade. And while others might stumble on cliche with the weight of such a task, Bowie pulls it off brilliantly – mixing his fuzzier feelings with some of his more personal leanings – and showcasing a newly deep sense of songwriting here that's really amazing. Some tunes have the sensitivity of work on Hunky Dory, while others burn with the fire of Man Who Sold The World – all in a balance that never sounds schizophrenic at all. Ronnie BoykinsWill Come Is Now (aka Ronnie Boykins) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
ESP, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... About March 19, 2021
A rare non-Sun Ra session from bassist Ronnie Boykins! Boykins was one of Ra's most long-term players – a key part of the Arkestra for many years – but on this album, he hits a totally different sound –and one that's somewhat spiritual as well! The group's got a great sax-heavy sound that comes from a trio of reedmen – Monty Waters, Joe Ferguson, and James Vass – handling alto, tenor, soprano, and flute between them – often in a tight line at the head, then breaking out into some wonderfully personal solos – played with such feeling that almost makes us think that Boykins was a much more sensitive musician than he ever got the chance to be with Sun Ra. The tunes have a really beautiful sense of structure and soul – and the reedmen explode beautifully with their work, alongside a remaining lineup that features Daoud Haroom on trombone, Art Lewis on percussion, and George Avaloz on congas. Titles include "Tipping On Heels", "The Third I", "The Will Come, Is Now", "Starlight At The Wonder Inn", and "Demon's Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

The great Jan Akkerman is at the head of the sound here – playing lots of amazing guitar, as well as organ and vibes – and the quartet are joined by Casimir Lux on flute, who brings in some great elements too! One of the most righteous 70s sessions to come from the hands of Dollar Brand – a New York recording that's filled with work by a host of players from the spiritual jazz underground – all of whom soar strongly on the album's long tracks, and give the set a fire and righteous energy you're not likely to hear on other Brand albums of the time! The leader is especially bold and free on piano – and provides these long lines that set fire to work from Cecil Bridgewater and Charles Sullivan on trumpets, Kiani Zawadi on trombone, Cecil McBee on bass, Roy Brooks on drums, and the massive talents Sonny Fortune, Carlos Ward, Hamiet Bluiette, Roland Alexander, and John Stubblefield on reeds! The record has a much fuller feel than most of Brand's other work from the time, and it's great to hear his angular, rhythmic piano juxtaposed with the warm spiritualism of the players in the group – wonderful energy that takes flight on the two-part "Titiana", and the longer "Jabulani Easter Joy". United Artists/Pure Pleasure (UK), Late 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 44.99
A very unusual session – especially considering Bob Brookmeyer's more modernist modes of the 50s! This album has Bob going back to roots you might not guess that he had – picking up bits of a Kansas City sound that (as he tells in the liner notes) clearly inspired him in the early days, and which is presented here surprisingly well by a septet that includes Bob on valve trombone, Al Cohn and Paul Quinichette on tenor, Nat Pierce on piano, Jim Hall on guitar, Addison Farmer on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums – all playing long and lean on some real Basie-styled numbers. Quinichette's presence really sets the tone for the record, and seems to pull out earthy qualities in the other players that we didn't even know they had – and on 2 numbers, Big Miller delivers some bluesy vocals as well. A wonderful title for this rare fourth album from Tina Brooks – as the set was recorded by Blue Note in 1961, but had to wait for many decades to finally get reissued! Don't let that put you off, though, as the set's every bit as sublime as Tina's classic True Blue album for the label – an equally masterful session from a tenor talent whose every note seems to be very special and well-placed – working here in a quintet setting with Johnny Coles on trumpet, Kenny Drew on piano, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums! This was the last year that Brooks would ever record, making the set one of his final testaments in jazz – before he lapsed into relative obscurity, and passed away in the mid 70s. One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by saxophone genius Peter Brotzmann – and maybe his first album of ballad material too! As the title implies, the work is Brotzmann's answer to the poetry of Kenneth Patchen – and there's certainly a poetic quality to the way that Peter lays down his improvised performances – at a level that's subtle, sensitive, and which really seems to be opening up the way for a whole new generation of free jazz expression on the European scene – much as the Brotzmann recordings of the late 60s opened a path for the first! Every track features a different reed instrument – and apart from a reading of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman", all the other tracks are originals by Brotzmann – played on a tenor sax mouthpiece, tarogato, bass clarinet, alto, baritone, e flat clarinet, and tenor. Some of the trippiest sound library material we've ever heard from Sandro Brugnolini – in part because the core group here is a psychedelic combo, which might have led to a few of the tracks being used in a short animated film on Sharon Tate and Charles Manson! Yet as with most of the great sound library albums of the time, the music is way more than conventional – as guitar, organ, bass, and drums are arranged, recorded, and produced in very unusual ways – with a really open ear towards the fuller, larger sound – which includes great effects and other elements along the way! The whole thing's very groovy – kind of mid 60s Italian mod soundtrack styles meeting the psychedelic generation – and titles include "Kissing", "Villa Polanski", "Sharon Tate", "Hip Now", "Lovable", "Petting", "Under Funeral", and "Malattia". Exactly the kind of record that makes us love sound library records so much – and definitely the sort that sets the style apart from anything else we can think of! Both Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini turn in some great work here – a mindblowing mix of modes over the space of ten short tracks – some tunes a cascading array of instrumentation, in a hip groove that's neither American jazz or soundtrack funk, but a special space of its own! Other tunes use an electronic approach that's years ahead of its time – as groovy as 60s analogue, but a lot darker, too – in ways that the rest of the world might not touch until the German new wave. The balance is almost even between swinging groovers and darker electronic cuts – and titles include "Grinta", "Azione CIA", "Scalo Clandestino", "Alambicco Cibernetico", "Strutture Generative", "Omicido Bianco", and "CIA Massacre". A seminal collection of work from Buffalo Springfield – a group with a short-lived existence on the LA scene, but an impact that shaped the sound of mainstream rock for many years to come! That effect is no surprise – given that the lineup features a young Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and Richie Furay – moving from folk influences into trippier, headier territory – and paving the way for both classic and country rock to come! Here at the start, things are nice and lean – well-penned tunes that pack a heck of a lot into a very short space – given key production help from Jack Nitzsche, Brian Stone, Jim Messina, and even Neil Young himself. Titles include "For What It's Worth", "Mr Soul", "Broken Arrow", "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Win", "Expecting To Fly", "Go & Say Goodbye", "On The Way Home", "Sit Down I Think I Love You", and "Kind Woman". Solomon BurkeIf You Need Me (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
Seminal sounds from Solomon Burke – and a record that already has the young singer hitting the full heights of his greatness! There's a vibe here that's unlike anything else – even any of Burke's heavy-hitting contemporaries on Atlantic Records – and the album's key proof that Solomon's easily one of the greatest soul singers who ever lived! His vocals have roots that go very deep, but the strength of his vocals also help bring a new focus to 60s soul as well – a raw power that so many others would try to emulate, yet maybe never hit as well as Burke. A number of cuts here are great originals penned by Solomon, and every number's a gem – with titles that include "Stupidity", "Words", "If You Need Me", "Home In Your Heart", "Tonight My Heart She Is Crying", "I Really Don't Want To Know", and "Send Me Some Loving". ✨✧ Donald ByrdChant (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1961. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A Donald Byrd treasure – and an album that was almost left in the vaults by Blue Note, until they briefly released it at the end of the 70s! The cover and title are a bit unfamiliar, but the music is right up there with Byrd's classic sessions with baritonist Pepper Adams – a great player here, with a deftness on his horn that's incredible – matching all the sharp changes and soulful undercurrents of Byrd's sparkling trumpet! There's a nice hard sound to the whole thing – almost the raw power of the pair's albums for the Warwick label – and as with those, Herbie Hancock is on piano – giving the whole thing an excellent soul jazz groove that really kicks the main soloists into action! Titles include "Great God", "I'm An Old Cowhand", "That's All", "You're Next", and "Chant". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John CaleAcademy In Peril (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Reprise/4 Men With Beards, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99 21.99
One of the coolest, most unusual albums ever from the great John Cale – a set that draws strongly on his roots in the New York underground of the mid 60s – including time spent with Tony Conrad and other experimentalists! The record is almost all instrumental – and has Cale mixing modes that include spare passages that are very evocative and contemplative, with fuller orchestral outbursts that are somewhere in the territory of his material with Terry Riley, but more freewheeling and less minimalist overall. Piano is the main instrument on many numbers, and Cale stuns us with his command of the keyboard – and the album features one striking vocal performance on the song "King Harry", alongside other titles that include "The Philosopher", "Brahms", "Legs Larry At Television Centre", "John Milton", and "Intro/Days Of Steam". Calibro 35Ogni Riferimento A Persone Esistenti O A Fatti Realmente Accaduti E Puramente Casuale (Any Resemblance To Real Persons Or Actual Facts Is Purely Coincidental) ... LP
Record Kicks (UK), 2012. New Copy (reissue)... About April 1, 2021
Massive work from Calibro 35 – a group we've been digging on obscure overseas releases – stepping out here on their first American record, and easily their funkiest album to date! The sound is wonderful – still filled with the older Italian soundtrack references that got the group's music going in the first place – but also driven by a much tighter sound at the bottom, especially on the drums – which really drive the tunes strongly! Other instrumentation includes loads of keyboards – especially clavinet-type riffs that fit the group's 70s cop/crime mode perfectly – and titles include "Uh Ah Brrr", "Thank You & Goodbye", "New Delhi Deli", "New York New York", "Italian Band From BBQ", "Rain On Concrete", and "A Massacre At Dawn". Terry CallierNew Folk Sound Of Terry Callier (180 gram 2LP expanded edition) ... LP
Prestige/Craft, 1964. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 34.99
Terry Callier's first album – recorded in 1964 when he was a wee teen hanging around Chicago's folk scene! As the title indicates, the album's definitely got a folk-styled sound – but also as the "new" implies, it's got a sound all it's own, fresh and free – and that sound is the genius that is Terry Callier! This is very stripped down material, very dark and brooding – a good chance to hear Terry before he hit the Chess studios and they backed him up with a lot of orchestrations (although we love the orchestrations, too.) The material has a soulful spiritual feel, and is sung with a lot of passion over acoustic guitar. Think of Nina Simone's folksier stuff from the same time, if you need a reference. Tracks include "900 Miles", "Cotton Eyed Joe", "It's About Time", "Promenade In Green", and "I'm A Drifter". This expanded edition includes bonus tracks – "Be My Woman", "Jack O' Diamonds", and "The Golden Apples Of The Sun" – plus alternate takes of "Promenade In Green" and "900 Miles".
