Geno Washington & The Ram Jam BandHand Clappin Foot Stompin Funky Butt/Shake A Tail Feather/Hipsters Flipsters Finger Poppin Daddies/Runnin Wild (plus bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Pye/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
A huge package – four full albums by this excellent soul group – plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Hand Clappin Foot Stompin Funky Butt Live – filled with sockin soul from Geno Washington – an ex-American marine who recorded to big fame in the UK in the late 60s – working with the legendary Ram Jam Band, an act that rivaled some of the best American combos of the southern party circuit at the time! The approach here is certainly soul-based, but it's also something different – given the actual overseas origin of the recording – and in a way, the record's a perfect example of the influence that African-American military had in Europe in the 60s – as their presence on the continent really helped to shape and authenticate the sounds of some already-willing overseas combos. Geno's vocals are great, and the tracks are all upbeat and lively – very much what you'd expect from the title! Titles include "Philly Dog", "Ride Your Pony", "Road Runner", "Up Tight", "Land Of 1000 Dance", "Que Sera Sera", "Get Down With It", and "Willy Nilly". Shake A Tail Feather is a hard-smoking album that bears all the best 60s hallmarks of Geno Washington and his Ram Jam Band! The album's not as much a live effort as the previous two, but still keeps all the best spontaneous qualities in the music – a feel that really makes you think that Washington and the band were just partying in the studio, rattling the tunes off as they came to them – with all the confidence and swagger earned from a never-ending stream of gigs in the UK! Titles include "Raise Your Hand", "You Got Me Hummin", "Tell It Like It Is", "Use Me", "Understanding", "Knock On Wood", "I'm Your Puppet", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Hold On To My Love". CD also features 7 more bonus tracks – including "Seven Eleven", "Alison Please", "Each & Every Part Of Me", "Give Em A Hand", and "Dirty Dirty". Next is Hipsters Flipsters Finger Poppin Daddies – a bit of soul, a bit of R&B, a bit of beat group grooving – all wrapped up in a classic 60s set from Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band! Geno's American roots are inflected and appreciated strongly here – not just by the Ram Jam combo, who groove things up with plenty of influences from Atlantic and Sue Records – but also by the audience, who seem to go even more crazy for Geno than the crowds at the Apollo did for James Brown! Washington's vocals are somewhat rough and raspy – perhaps not the instant hit sort of sound for the US market, but a perfect fit for the rougher-edged grooves going on here – partyful soul that's never too poised, and which features lots of covers of 60s classics throughout. Titles include "Herk's Works", "Day Tripper", "I Can't Turn You Loose", "Shotgun", "Raise Your Hand", "Who's Foolin Who", "It's A Wonder", and "Wild Thing". Last up is one more live album – Runnin Wild – with 11 more tracks that include "Rock Me Baby (parts 1 & 2)", "High Heel Sneakers/Mary Ann", "Knock On Wood", "I Take What I Want", "Gimme A Little Sign/Raise Your Hand", "I Got You Babe", and "I Get So Excited". Plus, the package features 33 more bonus tracks – including later singles, rare b-sides, and some EP-only tracks! CD

Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Really great work from Margaret Lewis – a Louisiana singer/songwriter from the glory days of the indie label 45 scene – and one who works here with a very unique blend of rock, soul, and country modes! It's a bit hard to sum of Margaret's music in words – but lots of this material has hard-edged charms of the young Wanda Jackson – mixed maybe with some influences from the R&B scene at the time, particularly some of the hipper female singers in New Orleans! All the work here was recorded by the Ram Records label in Shreveport, but a good deal of it was unissued at the time – and the package also includes 13 tracks new to CD – combined with a fantastic set of notes that provide an overview of the unusual Lewis musical legacy. Titles include "John DeLee", "Lover's Land", "Bow Wow Puppy Love", "Cheaters Can't Win", "Shake A Leg", "One Today Another Tomorrow", "No No Never", "Reconsider Me", "You Said You Love Me", "Yea Yea Baby", "Hold Me", "Something's Wrong Baby", "From The Cradle To The Blues", and "Teardrop Valley". An early moment of genius from post-Beatles Paul McCartney – a solo set that's wonderfully diverse throughout – filled with the kinds of cool little twists and turns we loved in his late Beatles records, and in his 70s killers with Wings! There's a newly-emerging sweetness going on here – that great sound that started to emerge with the McCartney album – where Paul was a proud, put-together family guy – easily one of the most confident of his fab foursome, and able to bring an incredible amount of charm to just about any style he wanted to try! Some of the best cuts here are the mellower, more personal moments – still delivered with an amazing rock-solid sense of musicianship and production, too – and even the rockers, which might sound clunky in the hands of anyone else, manage to come off with a great deal of charm as well. Titles include the wonderfully playful "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" – plus "Too Many People", "Heart Of The Country", "Dear Boy", "Ram On", "The Back Seat Of My Car", and "Smile Away". 2CD version features some rare tracks and b-sides – including "Another Day", "Oh Woman Oh Why", "Little Woman Love", "Love For You", "Hey Diddle (Dixon Van Winkle mix)", "Great Cock & Seagull Race (Dixon Van Winkle mix)", "Rode All Night", and "Sunshine Sometime (earliest mix)". Roy BuchananIn The Beginning ... CD
Polydor/Universal (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $13.99
Not the first album from Roy Buchanan, despite the title – but a set that helped firmly cement his strong 70s legacy – thanks to plenty of the almost-effortless guitar craft that made Roy one of the key forces to carry blues inspiration towards a more rock-oriented world at the time! Despite his face on the cover, Roy doesn't even sing at all – he leaves that to vocalist Bill Sheffield, who's got a soulful style that really matches the grooves – which leaves Buchanan to spin out all these long, well-crafted guitar lines that are more important to the record than the lyrics. Titles include "I'm A Ram", "In The Beginning", "You're Killing My Love", "Wayfaring Pilgrim", and a nice take on the Cannonball Adderley/Joe Zawinul tune "Country Preacher". CD

Alice ColtraneTranslinear Light (with bonus track) ... CD
Impulse, 2004. New Copy ... $18.99 About July 21, 2021
Mindblowing work from Alice Coltrane – an album of incredible beauty that easily sits with the best of her classic early recordings for Impulse! The album's got a spare, contemplative quality, but it's also never sleepy – and instead steps forth with the tonal building and modal moving styles of classics albums like Ptah The El Daoud and Huntington Ashram Monastery. Most tracks feature a trio or quartet – with players that include Ravi Coltrane on saxes, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Charlie Haden on bass. Alice plays some great Wurlitzer organ on a few cuts – getting this really wonderful "flat" tone to the instrument, one that almost has the same spiritual undertones as a harmonium. The whole thing's great – far better than we could have expected – and titles include "Sita Ram", "Translinear Light", "This Train", "Blue Nile", "Triloka", and "Crescent". CD
(SHM-CD pressing!) This title is scheduled for release about Wednesday, July 21.

Alice ColtraneUniversal Consciousness ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $18.99 About July 21, 2021
One of Alice Coltrane's most adventurous albums – a beautiful blend of organ, harp, percussion, and strings – much of which are transcribed for the album by Ornette Coleman! The most haunting aspect of the album is Alice's work on organ – spare, jagged, with a nascent soulful quality that's quite different from her piano work on other Impulse albums. The strings provide a sheet of sound – a shimmering backdrop to support Alice's work on the keys – moving forward tentatively, but growing in energy as the album progresses through a host of Eastern spiritual influences. Alice is way past jazz at this point – moving towards the new level of consciousness hinted at in the title, growing majestically on tracks that include "Oh Allah", "Sita Ram", "Hare Krishna", "Universal Consciousness", and "The Ankh of Amen-Ra". Trama (Brazil), 2000. Used 2CDs ... $9.99
One of Brazil's most groundbreaking artists is back again – with a cool 2CD set that reworks his famous Samba Pra Burro album! The set's a blinding mix of beats and electronics, with a sound that's as fresh as Otto's original album – and although we have to admit that most of the producers and remixers are Brazilians that we've never heard before, that's what makes the album stand out from the ever-growing pack of other remix project on the market. In many ways, the whole thing pushes Otto's mixed up musical version even further than before – as these producers are free to take some real chances with the original ideas, pulling out some of the most interesting elements of the tracks and turning them into whole new tunes. Features 29 tracks in all! ✨✧ Sonic YouthSister ... LP
SST, 1987. Near Mint- ... $199.99
The second album in Sonic Youth's three album run as one the most exciting bands in underground rock, and possibly the greatest album in their long, long career! It doesn't take a genius to ram a screwdriver into the neck of a guitar, but when they're at their best (as they are on EVOL, Sister, and Daydream Nation), Sonic Youth is dizzyingly great. Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo spin acres of white noise beauty on Sister, a melodic hurricane that really set the standard for the band's future work. It's way more than the lull, lilt, then ROAR style if indie rock that blanketed the late 80s/early 90s scene. The songs run much deeper than that, with subtleties galore within all the clatter, making the frenzy around the corner that much more powerful. Essential! "Schizophrenia", "Catholic Block", "Beautie Lies In The Eye", "Stereo Sanctity", "Tuff Knarl", "White Cross", "Master Dik" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 10s/1920s/1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $22.99 29.99
Caribbean styles hit the American scene – then get transformed into something completely different in this huge collection of recordings that span styles that include jazz, Latin, R&B, soul, and blues! In some cases, the Caribbean element comes through in the song structure – which might be lifted directly, then reworked for an American audience. But at other times, the influence is more in the rhythms or instrumentation – used as inspiration to then create something new – a bit in the way that American soul would provide the inspiration for reggae in the 60s. The package has the usual fantastic Fremeaux presentation – with a big booklet of historical notes, in both French and English, to support 66 titles that include "Jamaica Farewell" by Sam Cooke, "Salty Fish Aki Rice" by Ruth Wallis, "Bajan Girl" by Lionel Belasco, "Sly Mongoose" by Sam Manning, "El Gallero" by Dioris Valladares & Angel Viloria, "El Mambo Diablo" by Tito Puente, "Hey Little Girl" by Professor Longhair, "Un Poco Loco" by Bud Powell, "Chee Koo Baby" by Lloyd Price, "Shrinking Up Fast" by Camille Howard, "Ojai" by Joe Lutcher, "Salee Dame" by Albert Nicholas & Baby Dodds, "Inside" by Hector The Ram, "Run Come See Jerusalem"b y Stan Wilson, "I Learn A Merengue" by Robert Mitchum, "Afro Blue" by Cal Tjader, "La Maricutana" by Damiron & Chapuseaux, "Magical Joe" by Herb Jeffries, "Begin The Beguine" by Charlie Parker, "Make It Do" by Slim Gaillard, "Guitarambo" by Mickey Baker, and "Don't Touch Me Nylon" by The Charmer (aka Louis Farrakhan). A sweet little live set from the great Roy Buchanan – most of it never issued before, and a fantastic document of the mighty power of the guitarist as he rose to fame in the 70s! There's a lean quality here that's mighty nice – none of the showiness of other guitar heroes of Roy's generation, even in such an enthusiastic concert setting – and the recording's a great reminder of why Buchanan was always such a strong craftsman, especially on some of the soul-based numbers and more instrumental passages. Titles include "Done Your Daddy Dirty", "Hot Cha", "Further On Up The Road", "Can I Change My Mind", "I'm Evil", "Too Many Drivers", "Hey Joe", "I'm A Ram", "In The Beginning", "Driftin & Driftin", "Hey Joe", and "Roy's Bluz". 2CD set, with both the early and late sets of the performance! Hi Records/Fat Possum, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Al Green's first major album, and a killer batch of Memphis soul tracks with a sound that's a bit rawer than later years. The formula for the hits is firmly in place – and Al's beautiful voice is swept up wonderfully in very sympathetic production by the great Willie Mitchell. Although Mitchell had worked fine on his own before the record, it's his work with Green that really pushes him to the top of the soul hall of fame – as it's hard to imagine how anyone could have come up with a better showcase for Al's amazing voice. Proof of this can be heard on the record's great original tunes by Green – like "All Because", "I'm A Ram", "You Say It", and the classic "Tired Of Being Alone" – as well as on covers like "Driving Wheel", "Can't Get Next To You", and "Light My Fire". Nimbus, 1987. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A lost session of spiritual jazz – recorded in LA in the latter half of the 80s, but with a soaring, righteous vibe that's right up there with the 70s scene! The group here is incredible – an all-star array of the best talents working for Nimbus Records – Nate Morgan on piano, Rickey Kelly on vibes, Jesse Sharps on reeds, Danny Cortez on trumpet, Joel Ector on bass, and Derek Roberts on drums – all moving with the cohesiveness of a well-honed small combo, in territory that's right in line with some of Morgan's most glorious recordings for the label! The use of Kelly on vibes is especially nice – as he's a player we've always loved, but hardly ever get to hear in a setting this ambitious – and his presence on the record makes the whole thing sound even more magical and majestic. Tracks are quite long, with a soaring, searching feel – driven on strongly by Morgan's piano, and topped by some great explorations by Sharps. All tracks are nice and long, and have a flowing, spiritual vibe – handled in the piano/saxophone duet style with this really personal quality – more soulful and inside than some of Tapscott's solo or small group material from the decade – almost as if Session is really leading the energy, a bit like Marion Brown might in a duet record like this. Numero, 1970s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious projects we've ever seen from Numero – and that's saying a lot, given some of their other releases! This package is equal parts cultural document and musical treasure trove – a heavy book full of photos from a time when Upper Volta was stepping past its colonial history, and finding a new cultural identity as an independent nation – presented alongside a rich array of the sounds that were shaping the scene at the time! The cover image has a feel that's maybe older than its 70s vintage – and some of the music does, too – relatively rootsy at points, with heavy percussion, riffing guitar, and jazzy inflections on some of the horns – and a bit less polished and produced than work coming from scenes like Nigeria or South Africa at the same time. The whole thing's similar to Numero's Light On The Southside set – but maybe even better, as the music here is even more unique – and the images are ones that bring forth a culture we never would have experienced otherwise. Titles include "Air Volta" and "Mama Soukous" by Volta Jazz, "He Ya Wannan" by Ouedraogo Youssef, "Si Tu Maime" and "Ram Passomaye" by Coulibaly Tidiani & Dafr Star, "Milaoba" by Les Imbattables Leopards, and "Gentlemen Doromina" by Echo Del Africa. 3CDs, 37 tracks, and a hardcover 176 page book! One of our favorite albums ever from pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – a set of spare duets with Amina Claudine Myers, and a real standout from the early days of the Black Saint label! We really love Muhal in a spare setting – as it gives you the chance to hear a side of his piano playing that really doesn't come through in his large group sets. Given the added sensitivity that Myers brings to her music, the company here is wonderful – steeped in a range of jazz piano traditions, explored by both players with a sense of creative freedom that's only matched by their collaborative warmth on the date. Both players work on acoustic piano, but there's also some percussion on the set too – and titles include "Transparency Of Lobo Lubu", "Miss Amina", "Down The Street From The Gene Ammons Public School", and "Dance From The East". Salut/BBE (UK), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99 42.99
A set of work from Lebanese composer Ihsan Al-Munzer, who you might know from his work with various vocalists – but a record that's all-instrumental, and which almost has the feel of an 80s sound library set overall! Tracks are heavy on keyboards – used in varying ways from cut to cut, but often with a soundtrack-like quality – as if Ihsan was scoring the backgrounds for some cop/crime thriller that was set in Beirut! Other instrumentation is part of the mix too – lean use of drums, bass, and guitar mostly, although sometimes filled up with larger orchestrations – on titles that include "Streets Of Beirut", "Dindolo", "Girl Friend", "Gipsy Nights", "Theme From The Film Almankhtouf", and "Sonatina For Maria". Beat/BTF (Italy), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $34.99 44.99
Sexy ladies on the cover, and some equally sexy sounds underneath – served up in a perfect 60s Italian blend of jazz and bossa-based styles! Sweeping strings bring a nice sense of depth to some numbers, while others have a more intimate feel – either via spare guitar, or some jazzy elements on piano, sax, and organ – shifting instrumentation that really keeps things interesting throughout, and which makes the record feel like some rich narrative on its own, in sound – without any need for the images on the screen. The whole thing is wonderful – one of those Italian soundtrack treasures that delivers even more than it promises – and music was composed by Alessandro Alessandroni and Francesco De Masi, then orchestrated by De Masi, with some cool wordless vocal moments as well. Titles include a number of variations on "Lesbo" plus the sweet vocal opener "Qualsiasi Cosa", "Crepuscolo Sul Mare", and "IL'Isola Dell'Amore". LP, Vinyl record album

Eric AlexanderGentle Ballads (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 2004. New Copy (reissue)... $56.99
A long-overdue session of ballads from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved for his soaring, leaping lines on soul jazz sets – but who also has just the right tone to carry off an album of mellow tunes and ballads! Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the Sonny Rollins sound of the mid 60s – that perfect, yet never too-polished style that Sonny was using when re-interpreting standards in a masterful demonstration of space and economy. The tracks on this set are a well-chosen lot – and include 2 classic Mal Waldron ballads, "Left Alone" and "Soul Eyes", and Alexander's own track "Gently". The group's a quartet, with Mike Le Donne on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and the session's recorded with impeccable sound, in the Venus Records mode. Mose AllisonTransfiguration Of Hiram Brown (with bonus track) ... CD
Columbia, Early 60s. Used ... $29.99
One of Mose's most sophisticated album, and one that has him going way past his usual "folksy jazzy" style, into a realm that touches on Monk-like modernism. The whole first side is Allison's extended "Hiram Brown" suite, which mixes vocal and instrumental passages in an extremely haunting way. The flipside features shorter versions of standards – some vocal, some instrumental – but all with more of a moderist sound than his earlier Prestige recordings. Nice stuff, and one that you don't see that often. CD

An early 80s look at Latin jazz from David Amram – with a who's who of Latin jazz players and stellar jazz musicians of other realms – including Paquito D'Riveria, Candido, Machito & Machito Jr, Brazilian percussion guru Duduca Fonseca, David Fathead Newman, Jimmy Knepper, Pepper Adams and others others! What could have come out as clinical or academic comes through with passion and affection, partly because Amram could get such incredible players on the record, but mostly because the multi-instrumentalist ring leader is genuinely celebrating the music rather than simply replicating it. Includes "En Memoria De Chano Pozo, "New York Charanga", "Brazilian Memories", "Celebration", "Song Of The Rainforest" and more. CD

Pacific Jazz/Blue Note, 1963. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A stellar set from one of the most underrated reed players of all time – a brilliant bit of searching soul jazz, cut at a time when Curtis Amy was leaving behind his Texas roots for the new sounds of the Coltrane generation! The album's quite different than the organ and tenor dates that Amy had previously cut with Paul Bryant – and instead, is put together with a nascent spiritualism that's really wonderful – a sound that definitely lives up to the bold title and cover image, with lots of modal moments in the rhythms! The group features some equally under-acknowledged geniuses – including trumpeter Dupree Bolton, pianist Jack Wilson, and guitarist Ray Crawford – all coming together perfectly with Amy's work on tenor and soprano sax. The best tunes here are originals by the group members – including "Lonely Woman" (not by Ornette), "Katanga", "Native Land", and "Amyable". LP, Vinyl record album

Jon AndersonOlias Of Sunhillow (180 gram pressing) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Atlantic/Esoteric (UK), 1976. New Copy ... On July 17, 2021
A really beautiful solo album from Jon Anderson – best known as the lead singer of Yes, stepping out here with a set that matches the solo projects of Chris Squire and Steve Howe from the same time! Yet unlike those efforts, this one is truly a solo recording – as Anderson not only sings, but handles all the instruments himself – keyboards, guitars, and everything else – folded together in a sound that's very faithful, thanks to work from Mike Dunne, who'd handled a lot of the sound for recordings by Yes! Given that Anderson's not an instrumental virtuoso, like some of his bandmates, the record is a nice change from some of the side-long power jams of mid 70s Yes – tunes that together tell a story, but which have a lyrical, personal vibe that also really suits the charms of Jon's vocals. The set feels nicely like a mid 70s side-chapter of Yes – in ways that are different than the solo records by Howe and Squire – and titles include "Ocean Song", "To The Runner", "Flight Of The Moorglade", "Solid Space", "Dance Of Rampart/Olias", and "Meeting/Sound Out The Galleon". (Note: This item is not for sale online until noon on Saturday, July 17. A classic collaboration between Josi Ndlovu and Andre Abrahamse – both artists who had long roots in a variety of West African groups and projects before this set – and find a way to draw on that work while also finding new energy together in the studio! The tunes have a subtle, soulful sort of vibe – not really Zamrock or Afro Funk, but instead this mellow melding of those modes with others – handled with a nicely glistening production style that's never slick or commercial, but which really finds the best way to make the mellower elements shine. The set's got more than a few message-oriented tracks – which led to it's banning in a number of African nations – and titles include "Children Of Today", "Zimbabwe", "Afrodisco", "Dreaming & Scheming", "Everybody's Trying To Put Me Down", and "Motherless Child". Freaky fuzzy guitars from the great Jerry Cole – working here under the name of The Animated Egg – not a real group, but a one-off studio project – yet one that is filled with plenty of great guitar, and some surprising rock funk grooves! The music is much trippier than Jerry's famous surf work – more fuzz on the amps, and a romping sort of rhythm that often takes these tunes right into Cherrystones funky rock territory, which is always treat for ears like ours – and the music veers between hard 60s instrumentals and modder Now Sound territory – thanks to some burning organ alongside the tight guitar and drums! An early musical moment from the Arica Institute – a spiritual collective whose many members supposedly recorded this album over the course of a night spent at the Electric Lady studio – with such a shifting lineup of sounds and participants, the album doesn't list any particular musicians at all! The work is on the farther side of cosmic jazz – almost hearkening towards more meditative modes at times – such as the later recordings of Laraaji – but with elements that are also borrowed from Indian music and other global sources, often presented and produced in a way that the sonic elements bubble into a heady aural space that's difficult to navigate without letting yourself go entirely. You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. A record with an unusual source, but a sound that puts it right up there with some of the most heavenly rare Brazilian albums of the 70s – served up here in a folksy, jazzy mix of acoustic and electric elements – all with help from heavyweights who include Victor Assis Brasil, Mauricio Einhorn, Durval Ferreira, and the Azymuth trio! The songs are based around creations by a Brazilian comedy duo, but they hardly sound anything like that at all – as they're easy-going, mellow-grooving, and have these vocals that flow beautifully amidst percussion, guitar, and keyboards! There are two monologue tracks in Portuguese – both with audience laughter – but all other tracks are sung, and delivered with some wonderful arrangements by Jose Roberto Bertrami and Jose Menezes. A wonderfully soulful session from percussionist Babatunde Lea – and a shining example of the warm spirits and cross-cultural experimentation going on in the Bay Area scene of the 70s! The record mixes 70s soul jazz with bits of funk, Latin jazz, and breezy west coast touches – making for an album that's got some of the earthy charm of work on labels like Strata East or Black Jazz, mixed with the tighter soulful production of some of George Duke's early 70s sides for MPS. The vibe is incredible – a beautiful mix of warm vocals, tight soloing, and message-oriented grooves – and the whole thing's great all the way through! Curtom/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
Fantastic! The lost link in the Chicago soul scene of the 60s was Baby Huey – and he was a pretty darn big link too, if you've ever seen him in pictures! Weighing in at about 300 pounds, Baby Huey was sort of a rockin' soul star who played clubs on both sides of the city, to audiences of all types – working in a party-styled blend of funk, rock, and soul that was one of the most powerful grooves going down in the Windy City at the time! Huey sadly passed away at a very young age, leaving only this full album as his legacy – a great batch of hard-hitting soul tracks that are among some of the funkiest work ever recorded for the legendary Curtom label! The set includes Huey's classic version of "Mighty, Mighty", a club favorite from the live shows – plus the excellent Curtis Mayfield tune "Hard Times", famous as an oft-used sample track! Other titles include "A Change Is Going To Come", "California Dreamin", "Running", and "Mama Get Yourself Together". LP, Vinyl record album

Rare live work from Back Door – a Brit trio with plenty of connections to the blues rock scene of the time, but one who has a fair bit of jazzy undertones too! The live set's presented by Alexis Korner, who also plays some guest guitar on the record – but the core sounds come from the heady trio of Ron Aspery on saxes, Colin Hodgkinson on bass, and Tony Hicks on drums – with vocals from both Aspery and Hodgkinson too! The tracks arguably have a bit more bite than the group's recordings for Warner Brothers at the time – and the set's very well recorded, and pulled from the vaults of the BBC. A very weird record – and an odd parody of both Os Novos Baianos and Caetano Veloso! The album's recorded live, and it's very much in the spirit of early work by Os Novos Baianos – with loads of tunes that have a funky samba style, with some nice rough touches – but there's also a laugh track to the set, clearly marking the record as a comedy effort! From what we know, the set's a parody of the artists named in the title, and their laidback approach to music – but since we can't really understand the lyrics, we just enjoy the grooves – as the record's got plenty of strong rootsy groovers that stand out, even if you can't get the jokes! A record that hides a bit under its title and cover – looking like a songbook session, and without Chet Baker's dreamy face on the front – but one that stands every bit as strongly with Baker's other late 50s sessions for Riverside, and done with an equally nice set of New York elements in the mix! The lineup is nicely unusual for a Chet Baker date – Herbie Mann on flute and tenor, Zoot Sims on alto and tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, and even some piano from Bill Evans – and even though the tunes are all familiar Lerner & Loewe standards, they really come alive in the handling of these top shelf artists. Titles include "Show Me", "I Talk To The Trees", "On The Street Where You Live", "The Heather On The Hill", "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face", and "Almost Like Being In Love". Magically moody music from Richard Band – sounds that are maybe a bit less creepy than image on the cover, but which transform nicely as the set goes on! Many of these cuts are longish – almost like mini-suites of soundtrack themes – often with strings used in these nicely-stepping ways – familiar and dramatic at some points, but more offbeat at others – with the most amazing highlights being these weird vocal bits – which sound like more atmospheric musings from the folks who live in Whoville from the Grinch cartoon! Amazing work from the new version of The Bar-Kays – a group who reformed to become a combo as heavy as any of the best funky groups from Detroit, LA, or New York at the time! There's a style here that's a sweet Memphis distillation of ideas bubbling under in music by Sly Stone, Funkadelic, and others – taken to new territory here by a group that was already steeped in 60s soul instrumental sounds! The cuts show a great ear for simple hooks and playful instrumental twists and turns – still with a bit of the trumpet used on Bar-Kays work of the past, but more in a groove that lets the guitar step out nicely with psychedelic soul undercurrents! Gato BarbieriLast Tango In Paris (180 gram pressing) ... LP
AMS (Italy), 1972. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Titles include many versions of the "Last Tango" theme, plus the tracks "Girl In Black", "Jeanne", "Why Did She Choose You?", "It's Over", and "Fake Ophelia". LP, Vinyl record album

John BarryWalkabout (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Roundtable (Australia), 1971. New Copy ... $32.99
A beautiful and exotic score from the great John Barry – one that never had as much circulation on record as some of his bigger hits of the time, but which is equally well deserving of praise! The music is done for Nicolas Roeg's film Walkabout – set mostly in the Australian outback – and Barry mixes these breathy orchestrations with some rootsier acoustic elements – in ways that really echo the contrast of the characters in the narrative, and remind us of the sensitivity that Barry can have at his most sophisticated moments. Three tracks differ slightly from this approach – the seven minute long fuzzy freakout "Electronic Dance", which is totally great in its own sort of way – the experimental echoey "Professional Crumble" – and the vocal number "Los Angeles", kind of a hippy dippy tune. Other titles include "The Three Of Us", "Walkabout", "The Children", "The Journey", "Stranded", and "Night In The Outback". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe Bataan is alive and well – and to our ears, the king of Latin Soul is sounding better than he has in decades! This tasty little set really takes us back to Joe's classic work for Fania – but it's also got a slightly different twist – one that shows a new younger appreciation of the funk side of Joe's work that wasn't always able to come to the forefront in earlier years. Joe recorded the album at the Daptone Studios in New York – so the sound of the set is spot-on all the way through – perfectly recorded to bring out the soul in Joe's music, and handled with some great touches that make the instrumentation as wonderful as Joe's classic-styled vocals! And even more than that, there's also a heck of great new songs on the set – tunes that follow very strongly in the spirit of Joe's older classics, but which have a freshness that makes the album a totally essential part of Joe's catalog. Wah Wah (Spain), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 30.98
Bazali Bam look somewhat playful on the cover, but the record's got this darker intensity that points the way towards later experiments on the West African scene – with a blend of soul, funk, and psych elements that almost seem to be a precursor to Zamrock sounds! Yet the style here is a bit tighter, too – often short tunes that have a nicely rhythmic vibe, and a really groovy blend of organ and guitar lines – trippy, but in most cases just focused on the groove, either next to some very strangely-tuned vocals, or instrumental on other cuts! The album does have one great long tune – "Joyful", which runs for over eleven minutes, and is nice and funky – but the short cuts are great too, and include "Jezino", "Don't Fight It", "Action Ways", "Jester Joke", "I've Got To Leave", "That Day", and "Back To Spruit". Capitol, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
One of the greatest records of all time – and don't you forget it! Despite the countless lines of type that have been written about this record, nothing does it full justice like an all-through listen – something we're reminded of every time we put this one on the turntable, which is a heck of a lot over the years! Brian Wilson busted his ass making this little gem – and the rest of the world, and the band, were never the same again – awash in harmonies that most other groups tried to match, set to themes of young loss, longing, and frustration that really mark an emotional development – not just in the Beach Boys, but in pop music in general. And although some of the tracks are ones you've heard a million times on oldies stations, they somehow resonate together much more strongly here – taking on new meaning as the smaller elements of each song come into constellation with each other – creating a complicated tapestry of feelings set to near-godlike orchestrations. Capitol, 2004. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
A masterful later album by the Beastie Boys – who always preferred to put out a great record every five or six years, than a sub par album every 2 or 3! All these years after Paul's Boutique, when the world of difficult, expensive sample clearance could've kill the layers of pop pastiche sound bites that made P's B such a brilliant statement, the soul and funk samples are still piled on in abundance on this one (albeit with a more electro studio built backdrop), as are the block rockin' party rhymes – even if the tone is serious and strident in spots. There are no attempts at live funky jazz or punk rock this time – this may be the Beasties' most classifiable hip hop album in decades. Tracks include the great throwback single "Ch-Check It Out", "Right Right Now Now", "3 The Hard Way", "It Takes Time To Build", "Rhyme The Rhyme Well", "Hey F**k You", "Triple Trouble", "Oh Word?", "That's It That's All", "All Lifestyles", "Shazam!", "An Open Letter To NYC" and more. Richie BeirachWhat Is This Thing Called Love (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 1999. New Copy ... $56.99
Richie Beirach swings nicely on some of this set, but also manages to kick back a bit on a few ballads too – dropping out of the heavier rhythm on the swingers from George Mraz on bass and Billy Hart on drums – to hit some mellower modes that really show off the sensitive side of his playing! The balance is great, and the record's the sort that makes us appreciate Beirach even more than before – a great reminder of his talents, on tracks that include "Night & Day", "Goodbye", "Autumn Leaves", "On Green Dolphin Street", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "Nardis". Raw and rumbling gospel sounds from the Designer Records vaults – real and resonant southern gospel from Reverend Douglas Bell & Th Stage Cruisers! Jorge BenAfrica Brasil (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A landmark recording that is one of Jorge Ben's best albums ever! The album is a perfect realization of the way that Jorge mixes Brazilian rhythms with choppy Afro grooves – and the result is a masterpiece that yeilded some of his biggest tracks ever. Included here is the great choppy funk track "Ponta De Lanca", plus loads of other goodies like "O Filosofo", "Xica Da Silva", "A Historia De Jorge", and a great remake of "Taj Mahal" – probably his greatest cut ever. Great all the way through – and is a perfect introduction to Jorge Ben if you don't know his work, and an essential addition to your collection if you do! LP, Vinyl record album

Hard-driving work from UK sound library hero Brian Bennett – an artist who gave us so much great funky work at the start of the 70s, and who's still going strong here at the other end of the decade! Both records are mighty nice – a mixture of familiar funk with some deeper tones that are equally compelling – almost with the full flourish of a film soundtrack in scope,a nd with a good focus on some of the strongest standout numbers, which are occasionally presented with a bit of variation. Instrumentation is a mix of keyboards, guitar, horns, and some great low-end elements – and the package features both albums, with titles that include "Eye Opener", "Girl Alone", "Pussy Foot", "In Danger", "Routine Check", "Villain", "Hip Joint", "Psychopath", "Thrash", and "Heavy Traffic". Josh Berman/Paul Lytton/Jason RoebkeTrio Discrepancies (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 20.99
Fantastic interplay between a very free trio – Josh Berman on cornet, Jason Roebke on bass, and Paul Lytton on percussion – really opening up on two side-long improvisations! Berman can work in more arranged settings, but he's very free here – and expressing himself with this amazingly bold sense of phrasing on the cornet – with energy that just builds and builds as the music goes on! Lytton's a joy, as always – with percussive elements that have a crackle that almost reminds us of some of his electronics, too – clearly a sonic sensibility inspired by that side of the spectrum – rounded out by deeper, more soulful sounds from the bass of Roebke. The set features two improvisations – "Padova" and "Trondheim" – one recorded in Italy, the other in Norway. LP, Vinyl record album

Jose Roberto BertramiThings Are Different ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2001. New Copy ... $4.99
New work from the legendary founder of Azymuth! Jose Roberto Bertrami's keyboards have graced dozens of Brazilian jazz sessions over the past 30 years – not only with his famous combo Azymuth, but also on albums by other Brazilian singers and instrumentalists of the 70s and 80s. This new set on Far Out is Bertrami's first under his own name for the label – and although Azymuth have recorded often for Far Out, this album's got a feel that's quite different from their work. Bertrami's going for a smooth glossy finish here – working keyboard magic over sly soulful grooves, hitting a vibe that reminds us a lot of classic work by 70s Americans like Bobby Lyle or Rodney Franklin, showing that Bertrami's got more than a bit of soul in his work, when he's given the chance to show it off. Titles include "Bluff Dancing", "Tarde Em Itacuruca", "Dificil Te Dizer", "Things Are Different", "Partido Alto No 3", "Mamao Com Acucar", and "Ceu E Mar". CD

Jose Roberto Bertrami & His Modern SoundAventura ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2009. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A different groove than usual for Jose Roberto Bertrami – and a record that definitely lives up to the promise of its title! Bertrami's really broken free from the regular Azymuth groove on this set – much more so than on some of his recent solo albums – playing here with a vibe that's very jazzy at times, with a range of different modes – mod one minute, funky the next, and sweetly straight at other points! Jose Roberto handles his familiar Fender Rhodes on most tracks – but also plays a bit of organ and acoustic piano as well – and other instrumentation includes guitar, bass, and drums – plus added horns on some of the fuller, funkier tracks. A few tunes feature some great wordless vocals from Bertrami – scatting along with his keyboards in a warm and breezy way – and production on the set is great, thanks to the Far Out touch – never too smooth, and quite different from any of Bertrami's albums recorded in the US. Titles include "Laranjeiras", "Choro", "No Tempo Da Bossa", "O Pescador", "Ecstatic 70", "Brilliante", "Eighties Times", "Aventura", and "Maixa". CD

Nimbus/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
A dream of a record from the LA spiritual underground of the 70s – and one of the only records we've ever seen from reedman Gary Bias! The date's got a soulful depth that makes it one of the most compelling albums on the legendary Nimbus label – a rhythmic pulse that's often modal, and a sense of spiritualism in the solos that often has Gary stretching out strongly on alto, soprano sax, or flute – yet always with an inherent focus, and strong sense of direction! Other players are equally great too – David Tillman on piano, Rickey Kelly on vibes, Roberto Miranda and John Heard on bass, and Fritz Wise on drums – and the tunes are wonderful original numbers that mark Bias as an extremely strong voice in jazz – one that should have gotten better exposure over the years. The album's got a great Strata East sort of vibe – and titles include "As Children Play", "East 101", "Asiki", "Arthur's Vamp", and "Dear Violet". LP, Vinyl record album

A funky soundtrack for this film about fist fighting – scored by the great Franco Bixio with the same sense of punch and power he brought to his crime and cop scores! The music's got this great blend of strings and pulsating passages – a sense of drama that's never overdone, and which has always got an undercurrent of funk as well – unfolding beautifully through the use of electric bass at the the bottom of most tracks, even some of the larger arrangements. Some of the best numbers have very cool keyboard or piano – ringing out with a cool compressed sound that's mighty nice – and a few cuts even have some nice funky breaks as well! Black NastyTalking To The People (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Enterprise/4 Men With Beards, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 21.98
Excellent heavy funk from Stax! Black Nasty were one of the heaviest groups on the label – with a rock-solid guitar-based groove that went even farther than the Bar-Kays, who were no slouch in the guitar department themselves! The grooves are all slow to midtempo, with the band coming down hard on the downbeats, jamming away in a style that sounds more like heavy Detroit Westbound than sweetly soulful Memphis. Most all cuts have vocals – sung in a shouting style by the band that works well with the tripped-out hooks of the songs. This was the only album the band ever cut, but it's become a fast favorite among those who like their funk raw. Tracks include "We're Doin Our Thing", "Rushin Sea", "Booger The Hooker", "Black Nasty Boogie", "Nasty Soul", and "Getting Funky Round Here". LP, Vinyl record album

Brian Blade's a drummer, but the set is definitely the work of a warm fellowship in jazz – a well-matched group of players that includes Myron Walden on alto, Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano, John Cowherd on acoustic piano and Wurlitzer, and Christopher Thomas on bass – all working through mostly original material by Blade that has this slow burn and soulful sparkle – often mellow, but without every being too laidback – and produced by Daniel Lanois with a really great overall sense of sound. Leonardo V BocciaHomenagem (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Lugar Alto (Brazil), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
A beautiful take on Brazilian guitar modes from earlier years – a set that has Leonardo Boccia first stepping out in an acoustic vibe that echoes roots from Baden Powell and Luiz Bonfa – then has the musician working alongside the vocals of Sueli Sodre, plus added percussion and effects – all in a way that creates this magical interplay of guitar and voice! The approach is a bit like some of the more experimental tracks that Joyce recorded over the years, but the album is also a bit more varied too – as Boccia plays keyboards at a few spots, adding just a bit of electricity into this mostly-acoustic affair – on titles that include "Terra E Povo", "Mae Natureza", "Lenda Do Sertao", "Urucungo", "Cancao Para Iracema", "Durma Estrelinha", and "Choro Fantasia". One of the most interesting records we've ever heard from pianist Joe Bonner – a set that still has all the long, spiritual lines of his excellent albums from the 70s – but which also showcases Bonner's ear for larger arrangements – as he brings in trumpet, trombone, flute, and a bit of strings to his own work on piano, with bass from Paul Warburton and drums from J Thomas Tilton! There's a sense of majesty here that's a nice expansion past the vibe of previous Bonner records – while all the soul and spirit is intact – very Strata East overall. David BowieBlackstar (180 gram pressing with download) ... LP
ISO/Columbia, 2016. New Copy Gatefold ... $30.99
David Bowie's late career peak arrived just days before he left us! The preceding record The Next Day was a solid reminder of Bowie at his fuzz guitar-graced 70s best, while still standing firm in the here-and-now, yet we still sort of wished for more creatively daring work. Here it is! Once again, Bowie co-produces with Tony Visconti, but it's clear from the start that they're going for something deeper and more complex. Chilling bits of strings, keyboards and sputtering beats begin the epic title track, before Bowie's voice comes in like a spirtual guide – approaching Scott Walker territory here – augmented by sax and other cool touches. It's an amazing start to an unpredictable set of songs, each as hypnotic as the one before. The stranger vibe of the opener comes in and out as the album plays on, but there's some fuzzier and heavier bits, too – on songs that are enigmatic and anthemic, arty and accessible. Incredible! Other titles include '"Tis A Pity, She Was A Whore", "Lazarus", "Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)", "Girl Loves Me", "Dollar Days" and "I Can't Give Everything Away". LP, Vinyl record album

A brilliant soul album! That's right, we said SOUL album! Bowie was at the height of his Ziggy Stardust fame when this one was recorded – a drastic left-turn in styles, forged during a point in his American tour when he could take a break, head to Philly, plug in at the Sigma Sound Studios, and come up with some fantastic little soul tunes, thanks to help from Luther Vandross! The album sparkles with the best sound of Luther's early work – and you'll hear more than a bit of Luther's work on his own, and his tunes with Gregg Diamond on the set. Features the sublime tracks "Win", "Fascination", "Right", "Somebody Up There Likes Me", and "Can You Hear Me" – as well as the hits "Young Americans" and "Fame". LP, Vinyl record album

Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
The only album ever cut as a leader by tenor saxophonist Charles Brackeen during his early years – and a real standout in the catalog of the legendary Strata East label! The set's got an unusual history – in that it's part of the Dolphy Series, recorded before the label started by Clifford Jordan – as a way of giving a strong showcase to so many new ideas that were bursting in jazz during the late 60s! Here, Brackeen's tenor is set up with a trio of musicians most familiarly associated with Ornette Coleman – Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – a unit that's completely on fire, and freer than before – yet each graced with such strong individuality, every aspect of the record is a complete delight. Brackeen is amazing (why the hell didn't he record more like this at the time?) – but the bass, trumpet, and drums are all very distinct too – the perfect power of free improvisation when it's done right. Titles include "Rhythm X", "Hour Glass", "CB Blues", and "Charles Concept". LP, Vinyl record album

Really heady work from Brainticket – a Swiss trio, and one who serve up this masterpiece at a level that rivals the best Krautrock work of the time! There's a very heady quality to many of the tunes – not full-on jamming, but instead this really compelling use of instrumental elements – keyboards, guitars, woodwinds, electronics, and other bits – but all given this sonic intensity that makes the individual pieces nice and crisp, not buried in the mix! The drums are hard and heavy, too – really driving – and there's a production perfection here that may well rival the sonic intensity of the 666 album by Aphrodite's Child. Blue eyed southern soul from Bonnie Bramlett – recorded in LA, but with a sound that's much more in keeping with Muscle Shoals! There's no real reason for this sound – no hidden producer or arranger from the southern indie scene who helped make the record hipper than usual – but somehow, the record comes off tremendously well, and a lot better than most other white singers working on the west coast at the time! Bonnie gets Sweet Inspirations-like backing vocals on most tracks – with Gloria Jones helping out in the group – but even on her own, it's clear she'd be great, and most of the record soars with lead vocals that are very much in the best Atlantic soul mode of the time! One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by saxophone genius Peter Brotzmann – and maybe his first album of ballad material too! As the title implies, the work is Brotzmann's answer to the poetry of Kenneth Patchen – and there's certainly a poetic quality to the way that Peter lays down his improvised performances – at a level that's subtle, sensitive, and which really seems to be opening up the way for a whole new generation of free jazz expression on the European scene – much as the Brotzmann recordings of the late 60s opened a path for the first! Every track features a different reed instrument – and apart from a reading of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman", all the other tracks are originals by Brotzmann – played on a tenor sax mouthpiece, tarogato, bass clarinet, alto, baritone, e flat clarinet, and tenor. Some of the trippiest sound library material we've ever heard from Sandro Brugnolini – in part because the core group here is a psychedelic combo, which might have led to a few of the tracks being used in a short animated film on Sharon Tate and Charles Manson! Yet as with most of the great sound library albums of the time, the music is way more than conventional – as guitar, organ, bass, and drums are arranged, recorded, and produced in very unusual ways – with a really open ear towards the fuller, larger sound – which includes great effects and other elements along the way! The whole thing's very groovy – kind of mid 60s Italian mod soundtrack styles meeting the psychedelic generation – and titles include "Kissing", "Villa Polanski", "Sharon Tate", "Hip Now", "Lovable", "Petting", "Under Funeral", and "Malattia". Fonit/Schema (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $28.99 34.99
Exactly the kind of record that makes us love sound library records so much – and definitely the sort that sets the style apart from anything else we can think of! Both Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini turn in some great work here – a mindblowing mix of modes over the space of ten short tracks – some tunes a cascading array of instrumentation, in a hip groove that's neither American jazz or soundtrack funk, but a special space of its own! Other tunes use an electronic approach that's years ahead of its time – as groovy as 60s analogue, but a lot darker, too – in ways that the rest of the world might not touch until the German new wave. The balance is almost even between swinging groovers and darker electronic cuts – and titles include "Grinta", "Azione CIA", "Scalo Clandestino", "Alambicco Cibernetico", "Strutture Generative", "Omicido Bianco", and "CIA Massacre". Sidiku BuariRevolution – Live Disco Show In New York City (180 gram pressing – 2 x 45rpm) ... LP
BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.99
One of the coolest records ever issued by Sidiku Buari – the Ghanian musician who also recorded just as Buari – stepping out here in a very unusual performance recorded live at a club in New York at the end of the 70s! Side one begins with this great crowd frenzy and very cool energy as Buari's group take off running – mixing West African modes with more American boogie and funk elements – in a blend that has lots of riffing guitar and some especially groovy keyboard parts! Side two features studio material, but still pretty darn great – and maybe touched with a slight inspiration from Jamaica in some of the dubbier rhythms. There's some nicely weird sounds that are a bit hard to identify, and which cut against some of the sweeter vocal moments – on titles that include "Together We Can Rebuild It", "Revolution", "Keep The Rhythm Going", "Ofey Karambani", "This Is Music", and "Disco Soccer".
