Paul HornHere's That Rainy Day ... LP
RCA, 1966. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A sweet and mellow set from flutist Paul Horn – with a sad, sleepy, and wonderfully late nite feel! Ralph Carmichael arranged and conducted the set – and most of the tracks feature the Ralph Carmichael Singers in the background, singing in a really moody style that adds a nice edge to the tunes. The record's the kind we might have passed up years ago, thinking it a snoozer – but we love it's dark tension, and really appreciate some of the additional instrumental touches, like vibes by Lynn Blessing, piano by Mike Lang, and bass by Bill Plummer. Titles include "Girl Talk", "Moment To Moment", "Ecstasy", "Laura", and "The Shadow Of Your Smile". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label stereo pressing. Cover has a name in marker.)

Alvino ReyThat Lonely Feeling ... LP
Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good ... $7.99
One of the mellower albums from Alvino Rey – the amazing 50s pedal steel guitar (or console guitar) player who made some very cool records for Capitol! Although some of Rey's records for the label have the feel of Esquivel's best work, this one's a bit dreamier – still quite odd, and almost otherworldly, but done with strings by Ralph Carmichael, for a feel that gets at the "lonely" in the title. Rey's still playing well – oddly and eerily on a few numbers that sound especially nice – and titles include "Just A Cottage Small", "Love Me Tender", "My Buddy", "Try A Little Tenderness", and "Harbor Lights". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label mono pressing. Cover has small split seams at the opening and light surface wear.)

Ann RichardsMany Moods Of Ann Richards ... LP
Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $13.99
Quite possibly the greatest album ever from Kenton vocalist Ann Richards – and a set that really helps her break into some new territory too! The set's definitely got the many moods implied in the title – thanks to arrangements from Ralph Carmichael, Bill Holman, and Tak Shindo – all of whom do a good job of pushing Ann past the standard torchy female singer styles of the time – especially Shindo, who brings in a nice touch of the exotic! Richards has a great sound – one that's clearly inherited from June Christy, but in the best possible way – and titles include "Something's Coming", "I'm Late", "Lazy Afternoon", "By Myself", "I'm Gonna Laugh", and "Where Did You Go" – a nice vocal take on "Jordu"! LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label stereo pressing.)
