✨✧ VariousClive Hunt – Rub A Dub Soul ... LP
VP, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Reggae takes on Beatles tunes – both from the early and later years of the Fab Four – served up with vocals from a variety of different singers! There's a soulful vibe to the record right from the start – and the rhythms move between roots and lovers rock-styled pacing – but definitely change up nicely to fit the needs of the singers, which is a nod to the production and arranging styles of Clive Hunt, who put the whole thing together! Titles include "Taxman" by Nai-Jay, "Here Comes The Sun" by Barry Biggs, "Norwegian Wood" by Little Roy, "Revolution" by Yaniss Odua, "Michell" by Pierpoljak, "Help" by Gentleman, "You Won't See Me" by The Pioneers, and "With A Little Help From My Friends" by Tarrus Riley. Art Ensemble Of ChicagoGreat Black Music – Message To Our Folks ... CD
BYG/Actuel (UK), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 23.99
One of the key records that helped establish the genius of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago at the end of the 60s – a session that was recorded on the Paris scene, where the early quartet were really starting to rub shoulders with, and influence a range of different European players – maybe no surprise, when you hear the brilliance of an album like this! There's a bit more bite here than on some of the more spacious AEC performances overseas – really bold energy that comes across on the first few minutes of the record, which have this wonderfully righteous quality – augmented by shouts and calls – on tunes that maybe also have a bit more structure than some other material from the period too. The session was recorded at the Saravah studios, and seems to echo some of the criss-crossing experiments of that famous spot – heard on the Ensemble's classic album with Brigitte Fontaine – and the set features a magnificent mish-mash of sounds from Lester Bowie on trumpet, Malachi Favors on bass, both Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell on a variety of saxes and reeds, and the whole group on percussion! The set features the tracks "Old Time Religion", "Dexterity", "Rock Out", and the side-long "A Brain For The Seine" – which covers the whole second half of the record, and really sets the tone for the group's experiments to come. Roscoe MitchellConversations With Craig Taborn & Kikanju Baku ... CD
Wide Hive, 2014. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
Roscoe Mitchell returns to a mode that he explored freely back in the 70s – loose, improvised collaborations with other musicians – done at a level that offers up a richly organic blend of sonic elements and musical moments! Some of Mitchell's later work has been more structured, but the approach here is very much in the best early AACM mode – or maybe a bit like Roscoe's classic Sackville recordings – extended "conversations" between his own flutes and saxes, the drums and percussion of Kikanju Baku, and the piano, organ, and keyboards of Craig Taborn. All players are nicely restrained – and as with Mitchell and the Art Ensemble, the mix of instruments is never used in any way that's gimmicky at all – but with subtle shifts that really emphasize the need of the players to communicate together. Titles on this first volume include include "Splatter", "Rub", "Cracked Roses", "Last Trane To Clover Five", and "Knock & Roll". CD

A sound library set, but one that's got a grittier feel than most – and which ends up feeling a lot more like a stack of funky 45s overall! Gabriel Rowland hails from Los Yesterdays, and he definitely brings a current of west coast funk to the set – some Latin elements mixed with echoey guitar that sounds like a surf instrumentalist getting stoned – while heavy drums step out strongly on nearly every track, often sounding better and more funky they slower they are! Titles include "Mad Quakes", "Cry Folder Cry", "Spy Carnalito", "Vitamin Psych", "Rub Buster", "Skerd", "Panorama", "TOF", "Wrong Hustle", and "So F'D Up Inside". LP, Vinyl record album

Reuben Wilson & The Cost Of LivingGot To Get Your Own ... CD
Cadet/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... $8.99
Monster funk from Hammond hero Reuben Wilson – an album of hard-burning, bad-walking tunes that are a fair bit different than most of his other work! Although Wilson recorded some pretty traditional organ jazz for the Blue Note and Groove Merchant labels, this album has him working with his "Cost Of Living" group – a combo who only recorded this one album, and which includes Richard Tee on keyboards, Bad Bascomb on bass, Bernard Purdie on drums, and both Houston Person and Pee Wee Ellis on tenor sax! Most cuts have some sort of vocals – sung by either Sammy Turner or Kenny Williams, both of whom really fit the badass spirit of the record, and bring in a nice range of deeper themes from the 70s. There's almost a blacksploitation funk feel to the record at times, although the set's also got more of a soul album focus too – a rare move for Reuben, but one that's made the album a favorite for years! Tracks include the rare groove classics "Got To Get Your Own" and "Tight Money" – plus "Together", "Stoned Out Of My Mind", "What The People Gon Say", "Back Rub", and "In The Booth In The Back In The Corner In The Dark". ✨✧ Sugar MinottHard Time Pressure ... LP
17 North Parade, Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A deep collection of the Black Roots recordings of Sugar Minott – one that concentrates largely on the great sounds he produced from the late 70s onward, after he left Studio One to set up his own Black Roots and Youth Productions labels! Sugar's voice is fantastic right from the start – light and slinky, and gliding effortlessly over the grooves – which bubble and sparkle in just the right way to augment his lyrical charms! The tracks begin with some lightly tripping lovers/roots material, then moves into some early dancehall material as well – and most of the tracks are handled by Minott himself in the studio, but the set does feature a bit of production help from Sly & Robbie and Lloyd Barnes. Titles include "My Love Is True", "Hard Time Pressure", "River Jordan", "Never Gonna Give Jah Up", "Good Thing Going", "International Herb", "Informer", "Feel The Rydim", and "Rub A Dub Sound". Kent (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not the modernism of high art or experimental literature – and instead the upbeat, totally groovy sound of British mods in the 60s – served up here in a wicked batch of American soul tracks from the time! The style here is a bit Northern Soul, but also has a bit more of the blues and R&B elements that inspired some of the Brit rock acts of the time – but served up here by the originators from our side of the Atlantic, and with the kind of attention to special tracks and rare singles that we've come to expect from the great folks at Kent Records! This is more than just a rehash of older hits or overplayed numbers – and instead, the carefully-chosen set list really gets right to the heart of the matter – and backs up its musical magic with a great set of notes, photos, and label scans. Titles include "Ain't That Soul" by Teddy Reynolds, "Do It" by Pat Powdrill, "Crossroads In Your Heart" by The Shirelles, "Beg Me" by Chuck Jackson, "Cinderella Jones" by Sammy Jones, "We Gonna Rub (part 1)" by Joe Johnson, "Night Beat" by Kenny Smith & The Lovelighters, "Magic Potion" by Lou Johnson, "The Life Of The Party" by Joan Moody, "The Phillie" by The M&Ms & The Peanuts, "Private Eye" by Wallace Johnson, "Listen To Me Baby" by Ralph Ventsha & Red Julian Quartet, and "When One Of Them Won't" by The Turn Arounds. Great sounds from Ghost Note – a group that's co-led by a drummer and a keyboardist who also plays more drums – which should give you an idea of the funky nature of the album! There's a fuller group on hand for most of the record – guitar, tenor, alto, flute, and more keyboards – but most numbers seem to start from the rhythms first, then layer on the instrumental elements – avoiding vocals for the most part, although there's some snippets of found spoken bits used throughout the set – mostly as commentary! Kamasi Washington guests on the tune "No More Silence", Karl Denson guests on "Weedie B Good", and other titles include "Swagism", "Dry Rub", "Bawllz", "What's Next", "Funk You Muthafunka", "The Lone Angel", "Trifelife", and "Milkshake". ✨✧ VariousDon't Stop – Recording Tap ... CD
Numero, Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Not much of a cover photo, but one of the most amazing collections so far from the Numero Group – a richly archival project that finally brings to light the lost efforts of the short lived Tap Records label! Tap was the brainchild of Jeremiah Yisrael – an ambitious producer, and legendary perfectionist – so much so that he often put more effort into these indie productions than you'd find at bigger label projects of the time! Most material here dates from the years 1981 and 1982, and the music is a mix of club, modern soul, boogie, and a bit of hip hop – nearly all of which hardly got any exposure at the time. The booklet not only tells the tale of the label and Yisrael's career, but also Numero's efforts in resurrecting these lost tapes from a very moldy near-death experience – a narrative that's almost as exciting as the music in the package. And the package is pretty great too – not only because of the 24 page, full color booklet – but also because of the supplemental book that reproduces lost sheet music and studio notes from the Tap sessions. Amazing stuff throughout – well worthy of another deep bow for the Numero team – with a total of 14 tracks that include "Breakout" and "We've Had Enough" by Arnie Love & The Lovettes, "Invisible Wind" and "Guilty" by Jackie Stoudemire, "Missy Missy Dee" by Missy Dee & The Melody Crew, "So Nice" by Annette Denvil, "Rub A Dub Dub" by The Fabulous 3 MCs, "Don't Stop Dancin" and "Run Away Hide From Love" by Jackie Stoudemire, and "Breakout" by Magnetism. Also features two tracks from 1971 – "Does He Really Mean It" and "Love Which Way" by Bonnie Freeman. CD

Coxsone/Rockashacka (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The very first album from Coxone Dodd – the start of a huge legacy that ran into classic Studio One Records productions of the 60s and 70s, and which started with this initial album of early Jamaican grooves! There's plenty of jazz in the mix here – freer-flowing solos than you'd hear in Jamaican music a few years later – especially on the saxophone lines, which seem to get strong solo space in both the vocal and instrumental cuts! The music has some strong currents of American R&B at points, particularly the jazzier west coast variety – but the rhythms are already clearly the sound of Kingston, and really give the music a unique appeal. Titles include "Campus Hop" by Dennis Sindrey & Rico, "Beeston Street Riff" by Clue J & His Blues Blasters, "I Done You Wrong" by Simms & Robinson, "Freedom" by Clancey Eccles, "Donna" by Blues Busters, "I Was Wrong" by Winston Samuel, "Rub Up" by Dennis Sindrey & City Clickers, and "Little Willie" by Aubrey Adams & Blues Blasters. Cadet/Verve, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 29.99
Incredible work from the amazing Dorothy Ashby – a brilliant set of funky and spiritual tunes, set to full backings from Chicago soul arranger Richard Evans! This album is easily one of Ashby's greatest, and it's dedicated to the writings of Omar Khayyam – one of the forces guiding Dorothy's more spiritual sound at the end of the 60s, clearly opened up in a way that's not unlike the direction of Alice Coltrane's work, but a lot more focused and a lot more funky! Ashby not only plays her usual jazz harp, but also koto as well, and even sings a bit too – and the larger group directed by Evans features work by Stu Katz on vibes and kalimba, Lenny Druss on flutes, and Cash McCall on guitar – all in a groove that's really a precursor to the Earth Wind & Fire generation of the Chicago scene! Titles include the amazing break "The Moving Finger" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Dust", "Joyful Grass & Grape", "Heaven & Hell", "Wax & Wane", "Shadow Shapes", "For Some When Young", "Myself When Young", and "Drink". The mix of catchy pop and freer ideas here is really wonderful – tunes that introduce a whole new mature world in mainstream music – yet manage to have all the catchy complexity of the earlier years too. Production, songwriting, and delivery is superb – and this version features 14 songs that include "Drive My Car", "Norwegian Wood", "Nowhere Man", "Think For Yourself", "The Word", "What Goes On", "Girl", "I'm Looking Through You", and "Run For Your Life"". ✨✧ Bootsy's Rubber BandThis Boot Is Made For Fonk-N ... LP
Warner, 1979. Very Good+ ... $16.99
Bootsy's still keeping the P-Funk flag flying high at the end of the 70s – arguably stepping out here with a sound that's got more of the Parliafunkadelicment elements intact than some of George Clinton's other spinoff groups! The tracks are long, and plenty jamming – still with plenty of star power from Bootsy upfront – but also some wonderfully tight rhythms from the rest of the players too, all in that mix of hard-rolling, and light-tripping funk modes that still set the P-Funk groups apart from the pack of imitators who'd cropped up in their wake! Titles include "Jam Fan (Hot)", "Bootsy Get Live", "Under The Influence Of A Groove", "Chug-A-Lug", "Oh Boy", and "Shejam". LP, Vinyl record album

Ruby BraffBall At Bethlehem With Braff ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1954/1955. Used ... $16.99
Ruby Braff has a ball on this rare date for Bethlehem Records – a set that's got a live, loose feel that's quite different than some of Ruby's other records! The date was recorded on New Years Eve, at the end of 1954 – and it features Braff stepping out with these surprisingly human, almost fragile solos in the company of a small group that features Eddie Hubble on trombone, Dick Katz on piano, Sam Margolis on tenor, Gene Ramey on bass, and Izzy Sklar on drums. The liveness really makes for a different record than the usual Braff date – and titles include "Rosettana", "You Can Depend On Me", "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down & Write Myself A Letter", and "Sometimes I'm Happy". Ruby BraffHoliday In Braff (10 inch) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1955. Near Mint- ... $24.99
No holiday for Ruby Braff – not when he's working so hard to make a record like this sound so great! The session's an overlooked gem recorded for Bethlehem in the 50s – and it's got Ruby's trumpet stepping out strongly with a larger group arranged by Bob Wilber – in a great mix of 50s styles and older modes that really help Braff show off his wide range of phrasing! There's none of the hoke here that you might hear on other Ruby albums of this vintage – and the trumpet solos have this surprisingly hard edge at times, even when trying to sound sweet. Titles include "When You're Smiling", "Easy Living", "I'll Be Around", "Pullin Through", and "You're A Lucky Guy". LP, Vinyl record album

Ruby BraffRuby Braff Swings (10 inch) ... LP
Bethlehem, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $24.99
They're not kidding about the title – because the album's one of Ruby Braff's most swingin from the time – a sharp-edged quartet session that's filled with well-blown notes! Ruby's in the lead on all numbers on trumpet – getting support from Johnny Guarnieri on piano, Walter Page on bass, and Bobby Donaldson on drums – and the sound is a bit more rough than some of Braff's other albums of the time – not so sweetly-trilling, and we mean that in a good way! The vibe is still slightly traddish, but with a really nice edge – and titles include "Ellie", "Mean To Me", "This Can't Be Love", and "Blue & Sentimental". LP, Vinyl record album

Players include Ruby Braff on trumpet, Vic Dickenson and Dick Lefave on trombones, Al Drootin on clarinet, Sam Margolis on tenor, Buzzy Drootin on drums, and Wein himself on piano – and the tunes are open-ended swing-based numbers, with titles that include "High Society", "You Took Advantage Of Me", "Swinging The Blues", "At The Jazz Band Ball", and "After You've Gone". Dave BrubeckBravo Brubeck (with bonus track) ... CD
Columbia, 1967. Used ... $2.99
Bravo Brubeck, indeed – as this great live set not only has the Brubeck quartet in Mexico, working through some surprising Latin-themed tunes – but also includes some added percussion and guitar, which brings a whole new dimension to their sound! The album's still got the core Brubeck approach at its heart – with Dave on piano, Paul Desmond on incredible alto sax, Eugene Wright on bass, and Joe Morello on drums – but the quartet finds a way to really open up on these numbers, and expand their sound into new modes – as they'd done on some of their Japanese and Eurasian explorations. A number of tunes are Latin American numbers, re-arranged in a modern way by Brubeck – and titles include "Cielito Lindo", "Sobre Las Olas", "Nostalgia De Mexico", "Poinciana", "Estrellita", and "Alla En El Rancho Grande". CD also includes the previously unreleased track "Frenesi". CD

Never-heard live work from Dave Brubeck's legendary quartet – recorded overseas right at the time they were first breaking big on Columbia Record – and with a creative modern energy that shows them right about to leap into Time Out territory! The tunes here are mostly familiar, but given wonderfully fresh readings, thanks to Dave's sense of timing – augmented with the creative rhythms of Joe Morello on drums and Eugene Wright on bass – and topped with the always-sublime work of Paul Desmond on alto sax! The recording quality is wonderful – and titles include "Watusi Drums", "For All We Know", "One Moment Worth Years", "The Duke", "Someday My Prince Will Come", "Two Part Contention", and "The Wright Groove". As usual, Paul Desmond's one of the main assets of the set – working with Brubeck to forge a slightly off-beat and swinging approach that brings plenty of nice moments to tunes like "Gone With The Wind", "Ol Man River", "Shortnin Bread", "Camptown Races", and "The Lonesome Road". Classic early live material from the Dave Brubeck Quartet – already humming along nicely with some great alto sax from Paul Desmond! The group's in fine form here – a bit more relaxed and open than on their Columbia recordings – with plenty of creative piano lines from Dave, showing just a slight dose of modernism, and lots more of that cool, icy alto sax work that made Desmond a standout right from the start. Like Dave Brubeck's legendary Time Out set? Try this one – a great record that takes off from the concept of the first, but which goes in some very fresh new directions – using the same great group with Paul Desmond on alto, Eugene Wright on bass, and Joe Morello on drums! Dave's still working out some nutty time signatures here – but apart from the science, the thing that really makes the record cook is Desmond's alto – icy, edgey, floating, and always a treat – almost even more amazing in the space of some of these offbeat numbers. Titles include "Maori Blues", "Far More Drums", "Bluetee", "Far More Blue", and "It's A Raggy Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 23.99
Easily the crowning moment of genius for the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet – the moment when all things came together magically, and the group somehow elevated themselves to a whole new level in jazz! At the time of the set, Brubeck, Paul Desmond, and the rest had already been making plenty of waves with their creative yet swinging approaches to modern jazz – heard on a number of successful albums for Fantasy and Columbia in the 50s. But with this record, they really knocked one out of the park – blending Desmond's cool alto, Brubeck's unusual piano phrasing, Joe Morello's melodic drum work, and Eugene Wright's pulsating bass into a waltzing, almost modal groove that crossed over to many camps at the time! The classics "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo Ala Turk" were both hits on their own – but all titles are great, and include "Kathy's Waltz", "Strange Medow Lark", "Everybody's Jumpin", and "Pick Up Sticks". Dave Brubeck & Jimmy RushingBrubeck & Rushing ... LP
Columbia, 1960. Near Mint- ... $11.99 14.99
One of the coolest collaborations of Dave Brubeck's years at Columbia Records – and one of the greatest jazz sessions from vocalist Jimmy Rushing too! On paper, the modernist Brubeck and Kansas City roots singer Rushing would seem to be a very unlikely pair – but by this time in his career, Jimmy had gotten extremely inventive and was very open to new ideas – and manages to lend his amazing vocals to some sublime instrumental backdrops from the Brubeck quartet! Dave unlocks a whole host of bluesy tones for the session, and really matches Rushing's energy – and Paul Desmond's alto sounds somewhat unusual in that setting, but with a real appeal too – a very unusual sound for a record like this. Titles include "There'll Be Some Changes Made", "My Melancholy Baby", "Blues In The Dark", "I Never Knew", "Ain't Misbehavin", "Evenin", "All By Myself", "River Stay Way From My Door", "You Can Depend On Me", and "Am I Blue". Melopea/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1966/1967. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
Two rare albums from this great pianist – back to back on a single CD! First up is Jazz Argentino – key work from Ruben Lopez Furst, a wonderful pianist from the Argentine scene of the 60s – heard here on one of his greatest albums ever! Despite the local placement in the title, the set's got a really universal appeal – a quality that easily puts Baby Lopez Furst in the company of Bill Evans, Hampton Hawes, or a rare few imaginative pianists from up north! Furst's sense of color and timing are wonderful – ringing out fluidly, yet always with a sense of surprise that keeps us hanging on each new note – nothing that's ever hokey or heard-before – handled here with a vibrancy that's simply stunning. Many numbers are trio tracks, but the set also features guest trumpet and tenor on two tracks – and titles include "Israel", "Un Abajea Duriente", "Los Viejos", "Al Este Del Sol", "Sometime Ago", and "Cartas De Amor". Next is Jazz En La Universidad – one of the real highlights of the Argentine jazz scene of the 60s – a seminal album from pianist Ruben "Baby" Lopez – easily one of that country's greatest jazz musicians in the decade! Ruben's got a sound that opens up with the lyrical sense of space and tone first introduced by Bill Evans, but he's also more note-full at other moments – playing with a command of the piano that would have made him huge, had he recorded on the American or European scenes of the time! There's a warm balance between his instrument, the bass of Jorge Gonzalez, and drums of Nestor Astratta – one that goes past conventional piano trio modes, and which really reminds us of our favorite Saba/MPS sessions of the period. Titles include "Un Poco Alegre", "Hombre Amaestrado", "En Tu Dulce Modo", "Hermosoa Amor", and "Necesitare Alguien Mas". CD

Killer funky trumpet from Dave Guy – an artist who's played in other funk combos, like the Dap-Kings and Sugarman 3 – but one who's got a very special sound here on his own! Dave clearly likes a bit of hip hop crackle in his rhythms – and the drum work here is totally great, and makes for a very different approach to jazz funk than classic work from back in the day – material that instantly resonates with more contemporary currents, but also never in a way that's smooth jazz, commercial, or any other quality that might imply! Instead, Guy stays true to his funk roots, while also really moving past more familiar deep funk styles – embracing jazz much more in the way he solos, and working with a top-shelf group that includes Leon Michels on flute and sax, and Victor Axelrod on organ and electric piano. There's also a full color section of Brubeck and Desmond album cover – plus lots of other black and white images, and other jazz articles too – all in Japanese. 176 pages, softcover. Book

✨✧ Anthony McCall & David GrubbsSimultaneous Soloists ... Book
Pioneer Works, 2023. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A book that documents a compelling intersection of creative activity – the ephemeral light sculptures of Anthony McCall, and a set of improvising soloists who accompanied their exhibition – all presented here in a well-done volume that may well be the only physical trace of the project! The book is filled with photos like the image on the cover – examples of the way that Anthony McCall will shape light in a space, in order to create a semblance of structure, but in ways that are impermanent and uncontainable – as is the music created for the installations, performed by artists who include David Grubbs, Susan Alcorn, Ben Vida, Tomeka Reid, Nat Wooley, Yoshi Wada, and others. All musicians are interviewed in the book, and Grubbs and McCall have a long conversation about their own creative relationship and years of working together. Book

McCoy Mrubata & SiyabulelaLullaby For Khayoyo ... CD
Ropeadope, 2024. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A warmly crafted album from South African saxophonist McCoy Mrubata – not one that's sleepy, as the lullaby in the title might imply – but just nicely relaxed and mellow, in a way that has the reedman crafting some moody colors on tenor – in a lineup that features lots of great guitar work from Gary Wittner, whose chromatic contributions balance the saxophone nicely. The set also features piano from Steven Feifke, bass from Jennifer Vincent, and drums from George Gray – plus guest trombone from Siya Charles on three tracks, all of which feature either alto or clarinet from Evan Christopher. There's definitely a few bolder moments on the record, and these resonate with some of the best South African jazz grooves from years back – that cascading sense of rhythm that seems perfect for a soulful saxophone solo over the top. Titles include "Jazzy Jive", "Oh Yhini", "The White Sand Of The Flats", "Hudson Bridge Crossing", "Siyabulela", and "Tshona Khona". CD

Timeless (Netherlands), 1986. New Copy ... $3.99 16.99
A really dynamic live set from this hip modern group – more rhythmic than totally free, with a nice sense of angles and changes in the music! The quartet features soprano, tenor, and bass sax from Urs Leimgruber – plus piano from Don Friedman, bass from Bobby Burri, and drums from Joel Allouche – a well-matched lineup, and an unusual setting for Friedman, whose piano brings a nice degree of depth and sensitivity to the record next to the bolder work of Leimgruber. Titles include "Rotsee Suite", "Mood 28", and "I'm Thinking About It". CD

RubelAs Palavras Vol 1 & 2 ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), New Copy ... $31.99 33.99
A contemporary set, but one that may well be destined to become an instant classic in the world of Brazilian music – as the young Rubel has a way of embracing so many traditions of his culture, while also finding a way to move things forward boldly! The approach here is different than some of the pastiche, postmodern Brazilian styles of the past few decades – as Rubel dives right in, puts his heart on his sleeve, and infuses the tunes with a personal sense of warmth and honesty – while also doing all sorts of cool things with elements of forro, bossa, samba, and other modes – reworking them with an ear for some of the grander experiments from older generations when Brazilian intellectuals were taking keen inspiration from farther cultural reaches. The approach is maybe a bit hard to describe in words, but has an instant universal appeal that goes way beyond the boundaries of typical Brazilian fandom – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Posso Dizer", "Grao De Areia", "Forro Violento", "Toda Beleza", "Rubelia", "As Palavras", and "Samba De Amanda E Te". Ruben & The Jets (Frank Zappa)Cruising With Ruben & The Jets ... CD
Barking Pumpkin/Ryko, 1968. Used ... $7.99
Frank Zappa's amazing tribute to the sounds of LA that inspired him in his youth – not just the early rock and roll of the late 50s, but the way the music was picked up and given a home by the scene in East LA! There's a surprising amount of nascent soul elements in the music here – especially the early harmony groups, who Frank's clearly paying tribute to with The Jets – sometimes dealing with subject matter that goes way beyond what most of those groups would have touched – but other times, right in line with the most heartfelt sounds of the 60s! Titles include "Deseri", "How Could I Be Such A Fool", "Cheap Thrills", "No No No", "Anyway The Wind Blows", "Stuff Up The Cracks", and "Jelly Roll Gum Drop". CD

Compost (Germany), Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $15.99 21.99
A stunning set of Brazilian-styled cuts – presented here in the long-overdue 6th volume of this legendary series! Decades back, the Glucklich series taught us plenty about Brazilian grooves – especially the sort that weren't always recorded in Brazil, and were sometimes lost to the sands of time – especially as a few of these cuts appeared only on CD back in the day! And in the best Glucklich tradition, there's a few more contemporary cuts nestled in with the classics – making for a hell of of a set list that really lives up to the genius spirit of the series – on titles that include "Brasil Nativo" by Marcia Maria, "Brother Samba" by Midnight Gigolos, "Pe No Chao" by Grupo Ebano, "Come With Me To Rio" by Jon Lucien, "The Mystery Of Man (Truccy rmx)" by Sonzeira, "Mr Jenkins" by Guillermo Reuter, "Sob A Luz Do Sol" by A Bossa Eletrica, "Offering" by Jean Mar Jafet, "Hallo Hoppel" by Wutrio, "Aderico" by The Matheus Combo, and "Sambomambo" by Christian Knobel. ✨✧ Ruby AndrewsBlack Ruby ... LP
Charly (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hell of a great record from Ruby Andrews – a Chicago soul singer who started out sweet, but comes on hard and heavy on this righteous classic from the start of the 70s! The record's got a badass vibe you never would have expected from Andrews a few years before – with tremendous vocals, and these arrangements that are right on the money – and which pack a solid funky punch into nearly every tune! Brothers Of Soul provide the great backings – but Ruby's the clear star of the show, and works here in a deep soul style that blows us away every time we hear the record – and we've been listening to this one for more than a few decades. Wonderful all the way through – and with titles that include the funky classic "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", plus "Good N Plenty", "My Love Is Comin Down", "You Ole Boo Boo You", and "Overdose Of Love". ✨✧ Dorothy AshbyRubaiyat Of Dorothy Ashby ... CD
Cadet/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
CD
(SHM-CD pressing! Part of the Diggin Universal Music – supervised by DJ Muro.)
