Dave Rempis/Elisabeth Harnik/Fred Lonberg-Holm/Tim DaisyEarscratcher ... CD
Aerophonic, 2022. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
Very striking sounds from a very striking quartet – one that brings Austrian pianist Elisabeth Harnik into play with the Chicago sounds of Dave Rempis on alto, Fred Longberg-Holm on cello, and Tim Daisy on drums! The tracks are all long, and have a very freely improvising quality – fast-thinking, instant creation by improvisers who are hardly new to the game – three players who know each others strengths instantly, and merge together with Harnik here at a really breathtaking level! Titles include "Ohrenkratzer", "Penggaruk Telinga", and "Mimikaki". CD

Klaus WeissOpen Space Motion – Underscores ... LP
Coloursound Library/Be With (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $33.99 36.99
Drummer Klaus Weiss gave the world some great funk and jazz in the 70s, but on this early 80s set, he's in a nicely different mode – using a fair bit of (then) contemporary keyboards along with his rhythms – at a level that ties this sound library work into some of the same shift in styles that was taking place in the soundtrack scene at the time! There's still plenty of acoustic elements – both in Weiss' percussion, and the bits of piano, flute, and other instruments that drift through the mix from track to track – in a tight lineup that includes "Relaxed Mood", "Pink Sails", "Outset", "Bows", "Neutral Position", "Departure For Universe", "Southern Mentality", "Transiency", "Wide Open Space Motion", and "Action & Suspense". ✨✧ Enrico Rava & Fred HerschSong Is You ... LP
ECM (Germany), 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Enrico Rava was a man of bold sounds in his youth – but as the years have gone on, he's definitely become one of those players who's really learned that less is more – serving up well-chosen, well-pointed moments on his horn that can make a record like this so great! Pianist Fred Hersch is in relatively familiar territory – especially on some of the darker, moodier passages on the set – but he also seems set free a bit from his conventions at times by Rava, as the pair work more in sound painting territory than some overly musical pursuit on some of the album's best tracks – definitely in the best ECM tradition, but very strongly flavored by the individuality of the two improvisers. Titles include "Child's Song", "The Trial", "Improvisation", "Retrato Em Branco E Preto", "The Song Is You", and "Misterioso". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jack Lancaster & Robin LumleyMarscape (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RSO/Esoteric (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really cool little record, but one that always gets a bit lost in the racks – partly because it's kind of in a strange, weird space of its own – although that's also very much it's appeal! The album is very much what's promised in the title – kind of a soundscape with an outer space vibe – recorded by reed player Jack Lancaster and keyboardist Robin Lumley – the latter of whom plays Fender Rhodes, moog, Arp, and a heck of a lot more! The style is kind of in a post-Herbie mode – almost Pat Gleeson at times – with spare tracks, jamming tracks, and a slight bit of funk on a few numbers – very much in a unique space between instrumental prog and funky fusion – with all the best bits of both styles rolled into one record! The set is also noteworthy for featuring drums by Phil Collins, and guitars from JOhn Goodsall – on titles that include "Take Off", "Homelight", "Blowholes (The Pipes of Mars)", "Dust Storm", "Sail On Solar Winds", "Hopper", "With A Great Feeling Of Love", and "Olympus Mons". CD features bonus single versions of "With A Great Feeling Of Love" and "Hopper". CD

✨✧ Wolfgang Dauner & Et CeteraKnirsch ... CD
MPS/Promising (Germany), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mad MPS material from Wolfgang Dauner – right up there with some of the wildest records on the label during the 70s! The album's easily one of Dauner's most striking sessions – a set that has him handling a whole host of electric keyboards, and working with a group that also includes fuzzy guitar from Larry Coryell, bass from Gunter Lenz, and some really heavy drums from Jon Hiseman and Fred Braceful! Some moments are tight and funky, while others offer up a sweet spacey vibe – and overall, the album's got a perfect blend of MPS groove and some of the freakier, more far-reaching elements of the German scene at the time. The group take on a killer version of Coryell's classic "The Really Great Escape" – then roll into Dauner gems that include "Yin", "Sun", "Tuning Spread", and "Yan" – which features some guest voice and sound effects from Richard Ketterer. ✨✧ Fred HerschFred Hersch Plays Jobim ... CD
Sunnyside, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully personal take on the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim – served up in a set of solo recordings by pianist Fred Hersch, who really moves the tunes from their bossa roots into a space that's all his own! Hersch often takes a core theme of a tune, and works it over with a very different rhythmic pulse – one that's often a bit mellower than famous takes on Jobim, turning the tune over in shifting patterns of sentiment and modernity – far far away from standard bossa modes, but with a similar undercurrent of sadness. Titles include "Luiza", "O Grande Amor", "Por Toda Minha Vida", "Insensatez", "Desafinado", "Corcovado", "Modinha/Olha Maria", and "Brigas Nunca Mais". CD

Shoji AketagawaAlone In Tokuyama ... CD
Aketa's Disk/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $20.99 24.99
A beautifully fragile record of solo piano work – one that seems to underscore it's "alone" title not just with the fact that it features just Shoji Aketagawa on piano, but also because the whole thing's recorded with this echoey, almost forlorn of quality – very unusual for a solo piano set in them modern age! Yet the record's also on the always-quirky Aketa's Disk label, and is done in the unique mode of some of their other gems – right down to allowing the grunts and vocalizations of Shoji come through alongside his work on the keys. Titles include "Isn't She Lovely", "Aketa's Grotesque", "If I Were A Bell/Slow Boat To China", and two takes on "Theme For KC". CD

Allman BrothersBrothers & Sisters ... LP
Capricorn, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $16.99
The Allman Brothers at their best – and a key 70s set that may well have the group working at their peak! All their best southern roots are firmly tied together here – not just the country-touched approach to rock that was the group's calling card, but also their ties to some of the Georgia soul scene as well – an element that really surfaces in some of the album's piano lines and rhythms, which really help underscore the depth of the tunes – and give the group a solid footing that's stronger than some of their more cliched contemporaries. These tunes hold up wonderfully over the years – and have a visionary approach that almost sparkles even more strongly here in the 21st Century than when we first started digging their sounds on radio back in the 70s. Titles include "Southbound", "Jessica", "Pony Boy", "Wasted Words", "Ramblin Man", "Come & Go Blues", and "Jelly Jelly". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lucas ArrudaSambadi – Original Brazilian Groove Series Vol 1 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Favorite (France), 2012. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A contemporary set, but one that sparkles with all the best brilliance of the 70s scene in Brazil – and that includes such heady company as Marcos Valle, Azymuth, and Joao Donato! As with all those artists at the time, Lucas Arruda has a groove that's strongly based on Fender Rhodes – warm keys that are underscored with some great acoustic percussion that gives the whole thing an earthy core at the bottom, and a vibe that's quite different than any American fusion of the time! The music is completely sublime throughout – very jazzy in its inflections, but also with a more freewheeling approach – as you'd hear on classic keys from Jose Roberto Bertrami. The set's got a bit of vocals, but really focuses on the keyboards – and titles include "Physis", "Rio Afternoon", "Batuque", "Alma Nova", "Sambadi", "Carnival", and a sweet cover of "Who's That Lady". AyoJoyful ... CD
Interscope, 2006. Used ... $3.99
Warmly folksy soul from Ayo – a singer who's spent a fair bit of time bumping around the world in the past decade or so – and here shows the range of influences to match! Many numbers have Ayo playing acoustic guitar underneath her vocals – in a way that echoes older African traditions, especially those in Mali music. But the overall sound is more soul-based and contemporary – vocals in English, a mellow glow in the backings, and well-crafted and personal songs that really get straight to the heart of the matter. Titles include "Letter By Letter", "Down On My Knees", "Without You", "Only You", "Help Is Coming", "Neva Been", and "What Is Love". CD

Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A classic bit of 70s MPB from Belchior – one of the biggest Brazilian singers of the scene at the time, but one who gets some wonderfully thoughtful, sensitive sounds here – thanks to help from arranger Jose Roberto, who also plays organ and piano on the set! The music has a soulful, easygoing vibe that's very much in the legacy that Milton Nascimento introduced to the scene – complete with some nicely jazzy flourishes on the keyboards, which underscore the sophistication in the lyrics as well! Yet as with the best Brazilian albums of this nature, all the complexity never comes on too strong – the whole thing's very down to earth and personal. ✨✧ Box TopsLetter/Cry Like A Baby/Non Stop/Dimensions (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Bell/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
Four full albums from the Box Tops, plus bonus tracks too! First up is The Letter/Neon Rainbow – a powerhouse set from The Box Tops – a 60s group who showed the world that the Memphis scene had as much to offer the world of rock as it did the worlds of blues and soul – thanks to the all-great pedigree of this album! Not only does the group feature a very young Alex Chilton on lead vocals, the set was also recorded at the new American Recording Studios headed up by Chips Moman – with tracks on the record from the classic soul songwriting team of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, not to mention a few by the young Bobby Womack too! The bit hit "The Letter" leads off the set, but the album's way more than just that it – filled with great tunes that include "I Pray For Rain", "I'm Your Puppet", "Happy Times", "Neon Rainbow", "Break My Mind", "She Knows How", and "Everything I Am". Cry Like A Baby is a fantastic album from The Box Tops – the kind of all-great, no-filler record that really set them apart from some of their 60s contemporaries! At this point, Alex Chilton's still not a songwriter, but he sounds tremendous in the lead on vocals – working with superb Memphis production, amidst a host of great tunes from the team of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, plus a few other key songwriters too! Penn produced the record, and really gives it a fantastic sound – the kind of special touches and genre-bending elements of his own later records – on titles that include "Deep In Kentucky", "Cry Like A Baby", "Trouble With Sam", "The Door You Closed To Me", "Lost", "Fields Of Clover", and "Every Time". Non Stop is beautiful work from The Box Tops – a set that has the group moving way past their early hits, and finding this really sort of special place in the world of up-and-coming artists in the 60s! The Box Tops were maybe one of the first Memphis rock groups to really put together all the great elements that were bubbling in that city's scene during the 60s – the unique hybrid of soul, country, R&B, and other influences that were filtering into groups via the cross-cultural vibe of the city. That quality really comes through here – partly in the group's performance and the lead vocals of Alex Chilton, partly in the great production by Dann Penn, who also wrote a number of tracks with Spooner Oldham, and partly in the way that fuller arrangements are used to underscore some more soulful touches in the music. Titles include "Sandman", "Choo Choo Train", "I'm Movin On", "People Gonna Talk", "She Shot A Hole In My Soul", "I Met Her In Church", "I Can Dig It", and "If I Had Let You In". Dimensions is maybe one of the most soulful albums by The Box Tops – and that's saying a heck of a lot, as there's plenty of other soul elements moving through the other records! Alex Chilton's really finding his own here, and contributes a number of his own songs to the record, as a harbinger of his great legacy to come – and the production is slightly shifted, with Tommy Cogbill and Chips Moman taking over from Dan Penn, and maybe bringing in even more elements from the wide crossover between rock and soul on the Memphis scene. Titles include "I See Only Sunshine", "Together", "The Happy Song", "Rock Me Baby", "Sweet Cream Ladies", "I Must Be The Devil", "Midnight Angel", and "Soul Deep". Bonus cuts include "Since I Been Gone", "Lay Your Smile On Me", "King's Highway", "Take Me To Your Heart", "Georgia Farm Boy", "Come On Honey", and "You Keep Tightening Up On Me". CD

ComplexLive For The Minute – The Complex Anthology (Complex/Way We Feel/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 30.99
Two rare albums and lots of bonus tracks from Complex – an obscure British group from the start of the 70s, and one who have a raw, psychedelic sound that feels a lot more like music from the decade before! The set begins with the self-released Complex album – a record that the band put together themselves, and issued as a way to get attention from bigger labels – and while that never really happened at the time, the quality of the material has really helped them go on to become the stuff of legend! The sound is quite raw – guitars, organ, bass, and drums – often with production that's in kind of a mid 60s garage style, which makes even the sweeter, more thoughtful moments come across with an edge – as you'll hear on tunes that include "Witch's Spell", "Message From The Year 2000", "Live For The Minute", "Storm On The Way", "Mademoiselle Jackie", and "Norwegian Butterfly". Next is the group's second album, The Way We Feel – issued in a very small pressing, as more of a boutique project than anything else – but with a raw quality and trippy sound that really rivals the group's debut! The organ is a bit more up front in the mix here, and balanced with some electric piano too – both of which underscore a deepening songwriting talent in the group, who deliver material that would have gone on to become classic, had it gotten the handling of a proper record label! As before, there's an edge and grit to the record that feels more late 60s than early 70s – and titles include "We Don't Exist", "Lemon Pie Fair", "Moving Moore", "Jeanette", "Every Time I Hear That Song", and "If You Are My Love". Both albums are presented here with very rare bonus tracks – and CD3 features even more obscure material – unissued tracks, a 10" acetate, and even their 1975 single for Pye Records. Great notes – and a long-overdue complete look at the group! CD

John CorbettBullets For Dead Hoods – An Encyclopedia Of Chicago Mobsters Circa 1933 ... Book
Soberscove, 2020. New Copy ... $29.99 38.99
One of the most unique books we've ever gotten from John Corbett – an author who's given us some fantastic music writing over the years! This book is completely different – not written, but "salvaged" – as the contents are a lost manuscript from the early 30s – one that offers up a rundown of 140 different figures in the Chicago mob – some famous, some obscure – all written in this sharp style that's very to the point! The anonymous author offers no judgement in most cases, but provides a surprising amount of detail on each figure – from territory covered, to methods, to some of their important crimes – and their fates, if they ended up dead or in jail. The original manuscript is reproduced here exactly as it was found in a Chicago junk shop by Corbett – yellowed, brittle pages, each given a large page reproduction, with original typeface and typos – which makes it feel like you're handling the whole thing yourself. Corbett provides an introduction to the material – and then at the end, the book has some very cool features – a collection of all the locations referenced in the pages, 400 in all, most of which are presented on a pull-out map of Chicago that comes with the book! 232 pages, softcover, in full color. Marlene CordMarlene Cord (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Dot/Universal (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $17.99 21.99
A gem of a set from a singer who should have been much bigger back in the 50s – served up with the same sort of small combo backings you'd get on the Chris Connor albums for Bethlehem! Marlene Cord is a hell of a singer on her own – with a voice that's never hokey, yet full of feeling – and able to inflect things with a knowledge of jazz, but in ways that never go too far over the top – just perfectly balanced with a subtle power that's really amazing. Yet she sounds even better alongside the music on the date – creative Chicago backings from a quartet that features Dick Marx on piano, Johnny Frigo on bass, Mike Simpson on flute, and Jerry Slosberg on drums. The flute's an especially great element – underscoring the vocals with some great blue tones – and titles include "I'm Thru With Love", "I Remember You", "I Got It Bad", "Lights Out", and "This Love Of Mine". A totally wonderful little record – one that really lives up to the sci-fi party promised in its title – but with all the German 70s elements you'd guess from the cover! The quintet here is a supergroup of Krautrock giants – a lineup that includes Manuel Gottsching on guitar, Klaus Schulze on drums, Jurgen Dollase on keyboards and vocals, Harald Grosskopf on drums, and Dieter Dierks on bass – the last of whom produced the set with all sorts of electronics, effects, and other weird touches – at a level that maybe even blows away some of the 70s production of Conny Plank! Titles include "Der Herrscher", "Kinger Des Alls 1", "The Electronic Scene", "Planeten Sit In", "Interplay Of Forces", and "The Cosmic Couriers Meet South Philly Willy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gal CostaAquele Frevo Axe ... CD
RCA, 1998. Used ... $6.99
Gal Costa gets some great help here from Celso Fonseca – who produced the album, and gives Costa a fresh sound that makes the album one of her best from the 90s! The music's a bit in Fonseca's own mode on his recordings – currents of bossa that bring a classic feel at times, but also modernized a bit in the arrangements, and creative use of contemporary instrumentation – at levels that keep the whole thing from just being a back-to-bossa session! Gal's voice is wonderful – able to turn a line with such subtle power, she grabs us even when we can't understand the lyrics – and the instrumentation is right in there to underscore all the best elements, with the right touches on piano or guitar. Titles include "A Voz Do Tambor", "Imunizacao Racional", "Qui Nem Gilo", "Sertao", "Calling You", "Habib", and "Aguarte Agora". CD

DeodatoPrelude ... CD
CTI, 1972. Used ... $5.99
A legendary album from the 70s funk scene – and one of the crowning achievements of keyboard maestro Eumir Deodato! Deodato got his start during the bossa years of the 60s – where his sophisticated charts were already enough to make his career a landmark – but in the following decade he picked up the Fender Rhodes, and really took off in a great new direction with classic records like this! The set's a wonderful blend of larger charts and jazzy soloing – with sublime Rhodes lines from the leader, plus a mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation in the best CTI mode – underscored by percussion from both Ray Barretto and Airto. The features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". CD

Genesis Poets Music, 2006. Used ... $4.99
A solo debut from W Ellington Felton – a singer we loved in the group Crossrhodes, and son of DC funk legend Hilton Felton! As with Crossrhodes, the grooves here are heavy on keyboards – floating out warmly amidst the lead vocals from Felton – and also featuring some great guest work from Wayna, Sy Smith, Lou Lou, and Eric Roberson! Felton's songs are quite fresh – almost spontaneous expressions at times, served up with a rhythmic pulse that underscores the lyrics nicely – and which makes the keyboard-heavy instrumentation all that more compelling. Titles include "Funky Feeling", "How Dare You", "You Can", "Candy Of Lady Friday", "Postcard From The Edge", "Beer For My Miss", "Destiny's Okay", "ASOR", "I Want You Like Her", and "Myhogany". CD

A sexy little soundtrack from Nico Fidenco – penned for this mid 70s film about a teenage prostitute who works under the nickname "Blue Jeans"! The music's got a wonderfully whimsical feel – not as electric or Euro-erotic as you might expect from the cover, and often put together with a lively, leaping sensibility in the rhythms. Instrumentation includes acoustic guitar, flute, and some well-crafted percussion – sometimes played as melodically as the other instruments in the mix – and at times, bits of strings slide in slightly, underscoring a few darker moments in the narrative with Morricone-like tension. The group Cyan perform two vocal numbers – "Blue Jeans" and "A Final Step" – and the CD features 16 other tracks, all titled "Blue Jeans". CD

The great Azar Lawrence joins bassist Henry Franklin for this album – and his tremendous tenor talents really make the album shine! The set's got a very soulful sort of energy – Azar's tenor soaring over the top of rhythms from Theo Saunders on piano, Franklin on bass, and Carl Burnett on drums – underscored with added percussion from Ramadan Mu Min. The whole thing is acoustic, but there's lots of the same righteousness to the record that you'd find on Franklin's 70s albums for the Black Jazz label – which makes the set a really wonderful re-discovery of Henry's talents. Svart (Finland), 1970. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
A really heady live performance from Guru Guru – and a great reminder of how much revolutionary music was being created at the start of the 70s with just the familiar elements of guitar, bass, and drums! With an instrumental lineup that small, you'd think the whole thing would sound very lean – especially away from any added tricks or prog processing in the studio – yet the music is tremendously fierce throughout – on these massive long tracks that are driven by the drums of Mani Neumeir, bass of Uli Trepte, and guitar of Ax Genrich – often with such instrumental power, lyrics aren't needed at all! And if you ever thought prog was about noodling, not hard rocking, this set will definitely change your mind – thanks to the tracks "Stone In", "Bo Diddley", and "Der LSD Marsch". CD

Mike HarrisonMike Harrison/Smokestack Lightning/Rainbow Rider ... CD
Island/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.99
Three overlooked albums by British singer Mike Harrison – all brought together in a single set! First up is the self-titled Mike Harrison – a wonderful solo debut from the singer who made Spooky Tooth sound so great on their albums, maybe even sounding better here on his own! The album is clearly conceived and put together by Mike – with backup help from The Junkyard Band, who underscore the yearning, earnest qualities in his vocals – spun out with a snakey, raspy charm, with a sound that's maybe a more intimate take on territory explored by Procol Harum. The songs are great, and the whole record has a quality level that really attests to the all-great quality of Island Records at this point – with tracks that include "Pain", "Lonely People", "Mother Nature", "Call It A Day", "Damian", and "Wait Until The Morning". Smokestack Lightning is great solo work from Mike Harrison, ex-Spooky Tooth – a fantastic singer who should have been huge as a solo act – maybe a bit like Colin Blunstone, whose sound with The Zombies was so important, but could never have a huge career on his own – even while he created some wonderful albums in the process! This set's a well-crafted gem through and through – recorded at Muscle Shoals, but with a sound that's free of any of the hoke of those oft-used studios – as instead of bending to southern modes, Harrison uses the ace musicians to underscore some of the depth of his own approach in a really great way. Titles include "Turning Over", "Wanna Be Free", "Tears", "What A Price", and "Paid My Dues". Rainbow Rider has Mike Harrison maybe hitting some harder rock territory than before, with some roots rock moments – more a part of the overall sound of the group, and with some pretty heavy guitars up there in the lead – which seems to bring out a very different quality in Mike's vocals. Titles include "Okay Lay Lady Lay", "Like A Road Leading Home", "Maverick Woman Blues", "You & Me", "I'll Keep It With Mine", and "Friend". CD

Columbia (Japan), 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99 29.99
A very groovy session from Japanese singer Miko – recording here in the US with hip grooves from the Billy Taylor Trio! The style is almost even cooler than some of Billy's own records of the time – as the rhythms are open and flowing, which makes for a really sparkling feel to the set – a sound that underscores some of the more soulful tendencies that Miko was showing in the 60s, and which almost makes the album sound like some of the hippest vocal jazz sides of the sort from the European scene. There's also some great tunes used on the set too – Bob Dorough/Ben Tucker numbers that include "The Message", "Ramblin Rover", "Right Here Right Now", and "Comin Home Baby" – plus a cool take on Taylor's "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free", and Bobby Hebb's "Sunny". ✨✧ Freddie HubbardFirst Light ... CD
CTI, 1972. Used ... $5.99
Sweet early CTI work from trumpeter Freddie Hubbard – the kind of groundbreaking electric jazz that really helped him find a new space in the 70s! The album follows strongly from Freddie's classic Red Clay set for CTI – and like that one, it features extended tracks that build beautifully as they roll on – taking Freddie's airy trumpet as the base, and layering in electric piano, flute, guitar, and percussion – plus some wonderfully subtle strings – used sparely, but in just the right way to underscore the wider vision of the record. Arrangements are by the mighty Don Sebesky – and other players include George Benson on guitar, Hubert Laws on flute, Phil Kraus on vibes, and Airto on percussion – plus Richard Wyands on the keys, making a rare CTI appearance here. Titles include a surprisingly great version of "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" which has some great breaks in the middle – plus "First Light", "Moment To Moment", and "Yesterday's Dreams". CD

McClenty also penned a few of his own tunes for the set – including some surprisingly nice ballads – which are mixed here with takes on tunes by Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Herbie Nichols, and Stevie Wonder. Titles include "Sack Full Of Dreams", "The Big Push", "That Girl", "Autumn", "Blue Chopsticks", "Countdown", "My Love", and "I Remember When". CD

A landmark record from the Dutch jazz scene – one that takes all the strong 70s years of free improvisation in that world, and helps it find a new sort of focus! As fans of the scene know, ICP stands for Instant Composers Pool – writing while improvising on the spot – a notion that's applied here to a completely amazing tentet, with a lineup that moves even beyond the core scene – to include Misha Mengelberg on piano, John Tchicai on alto and soprano, Gilius Bergeyk on alto, Peter Bennink on alto and sopranino, Peter Brotzmann on alto and tenor, Bert Koppelaar on trombone, Tristan Honsinger on cello, Alan Silva on bass, Han Bennink on drums and bass clarinet, and Michel Waisisz on the very cool "crackle box". The force of the individual players is already amazing – but the way they come together here is breathtaking – sometimes with a full blast that should be chaos, but which finds an amazing sense of song, thanks in part to the strength of Mengelberg on piano. Titles include "Valse Trovee", "Ludvig's Blue Note", "Dank", "Alexander's Marschbefehl", "Rumboon", and five "Tetterettet" selections. CD

DAMN!, indeed – Kendrick has yet to take even a small step down from the creative peak he's been riding for years – and takes another daring step forward with this strong, strident, no-mess-taking classic in the making! The surprise-announced DAMN! finds him taking on timely concerns – some longtime inherent to everyday racial, social, and class struggles in American life, and others that are purely personal. The production is diverse to a degree, but a bit straight forward compared to the sprawling, years-in-the-making To Pimp A Butterfly – all by design, as DAMN! is clearly made to sound fresh and urgent right now. Kendrick Lamarr waited quite a long time to give the world a follow-up to his classic DAMN – and for good reason too, as the rapper's been on a long personal journey that's documented strongly on the record! The Kendrick heard here is much more introspective than before – and that's saying a lot, given his previous approach – and tunes here deal with issues of personal struggle, healing, and redemption – but all with the kind of sharp edges and sense of fragility that keeps the record from ever feeling to smug or full of itself. Opinions started flying about the record right from the start, and there's plenty here to build your own understanding too – on titles that include "Father Time", "Die Hard", "United In Grief", "We Cry Together", "Count Me Out", "Purple Hearts", "Rich Spirit", "Crown", "Savior", and "Silent Hill". Fresh material from an increasingly pivotal figure – who may not be revolutionizing the game on the level of the heavy critical praise he's heaped with, but he's certainly marching to his own beat, rather than chasing hits! Love, Peace, & HappinessHere 'Tis ... CD
RCA/P&C, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A tremendous little record from Love Peace & Happiness – a great vocal trio from the early 70s, and one who really shine with this overlooked gem for RCA! The trio were part of the New Birth/Nite Liters universe that producer Harvey Fuqua brought to the label at the time – and they've got a hip sound that's right up there with the other two groups – with whom they were very intimately involved – working here with arrangements from Fuqua that are almost his contribution to post-Motown sounds in the 70s, the way that Holland-Dozier-Holland were working at Invictus. Ann Bogan really soars with righteous leads in the group – and gets equal support from brothers Leslie and Melvin Wilson – who really help underscore some of the bolder elements of the music – especially on the funkier cuts. Titles include "I Don't Want To Do Wrong", "Lonesome Lonely & Alone", "Don't Knock My Love", "If I Owned The World", "You Can't Cheat the Cheater", "Stay", "Mind", and "You've Chosen Me". Brownswood (UK), 2018. Used ... $6.99
A record with a soaring spirit from the contemporary London scene – a fantastic full-length statement from Maisha, a group we'd heard about over the years – but are only now getting a chance to enjoy! The group's led by drummer Jake Long, but features this really tremendous work on tenor and flute from Nubya Garcia – who's got a majestic approach that's very much in the best spiritual jazz modes, but which also maybe gets a bit more personal at times too – especially on the passages with flute, which really brings a lyrical beauty to the record – and the group also features guitar, keyboards, bass, and two more percussionists! Long's rhythm progressions are nicely inventive, and very organic – and the sound is fleshed out at times by the slight addition of added strings, harp, and a bit of trumpet – all to underscore the more righteous currents in the music. Really fantastic – one that might knock Kamasi Washington off your turntable – with titles that include "Osiris", "Azure", "Kaa", "There Is A Place", and "Eaglehurst/The Palace". CD

Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2022. New Copy ... $20.99 24.99
One of the most powerful performances we've heard in years from the great Joe McPhee – and that's because he lets his voice speak as much as his tenor – especially on two spoken passages that highlight McPhee's message at an extremely righteous political level! Yet that's also very appropriate for the setting of the performance, which took place on Juneteenth – as a duet with cellist Tomeka Reid, who's equally amazing here – underscoring the power of Joe's presence, as the two move between open improvisation and some more tuneful passages that evoke a strong sense of history and memory that really resonate with the date. Fantastic throughout – and a key recording for both great artists – with the long "Juneteenth" performance, plus "Nation Time For Real This Time" and "Alone Together". LP, Vinyl record album

Mario MigliardiA Come Andromeda ... CD
Universal/GDM (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... $19.99 About February 1, 2023 (delayed)
Very gripping music for this early 70s Italian TV thriller – scored with a wonderfully offbeat style by Mario Migliardi! Some tracks are sweet and breezy, while others are extremely dark – some of the darkest we've heard in Italian film score work of the time! These cuts have some very unique orchestrations – and often echo a 20th century classical mode at points, sometimes with a bit of electronics – but in ways that are quite different from the atonal 70s sounds of Morricone – much more dramatic, and filled with sharp notes and fast changes – instrumentation that bursts out with an almost improvisational quality at points. The mellower tracks stand out even more strongly than usual amidst this avant instrumentation – but they only underscore the overall darkness of the soundtrack by their presence. Edda Dell'Orso and I Cantori Moderni do a bit of singing on the record – but most cuts are instrumental, and the reissue features a total of 24 tracks in all. CD

Jerzy MilianOptima Fide ... CD
GAD (Poland), Late 60s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
The depths of Jerzy Milian's talents seem endless with records like this – far more so than we ever would have guessed from the handful of commercial albums the famous Polish jazz vibist released in the 60s and 70s! As with so many other talents on his scene, chances to issue records were often few and far between – but that doesn't mean that Milian kept his talents in check, and instead was growing in all sorts of incredible ways that could hardly be contained on an album! This set brings together a number of late 60s work by Jerzy – some as scores for films, some larger ensemble pieces – all recorded away from Poland, in Brussels – where Milian was able to work with some extremely responsive modern musicians. Two thirds of the set feature a larger group directed by Etienne Verschueren, the last section some smaller combo material with Freddy Sunder – and throughout, the music is full of life, tone, color, and a very special magic that's very different than any sort of conventional record you'd ever hear from a standard vibes player. Titles include "Woman I Need", "Beat Obsession", "Optima Fide", "My Favourite Band", "Boyfriend Or Girlfriend", "Four Engravings", and "Realities". CD

Early work from this tremendous Japanese saxophonist – working here on both alto and soprano sax, in styles that are sharply angular, but also quite warm and soulful! Kosuke Mine's got a quality that's a bit like Joe Henderson at the same time – obviously informed by earlier hardbop, but let loose in some bolder lines that snake out with a rich, bold feel that's totally great. His group here features Fender Rhodes from Hideo Ichikawa – possibly further underscoring some of the Henderson electric styles of the set – and other players include Takashi Imai on trombone, Takashi Mizuhashi on bass, and Hiroshi Murakami on drums. The record's got a nice sense of freedom, but is never too far outside – and titles include a version of Joe Henderson's "Isotope", plus the originals "Morningtide", "Dream Eyes", and "Work I". CD

Noriko really soars at times – hitting a dynamic groove on the album's originals by Isao – "My Life", "Cadillac Woman", and "Push" – all really unique numbers that rank with the grooviest Japanese jazz vocal work of the time. Yupiteru/BBE (UK), 1978. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99 48.99
Warm jazz vocals, and some great instrumentation too – thanks to work from the sublime 70s bassist Isao Suzuki! Singer Noriko Miyamoto's on the cover, but the album's got the same great glow as Isao's other albums of the decade – a really refreshing approach to jazz arrangements, with the bass used sometimes to underscore gentler flows, sometimes more forceful as a lead instrument – always with the freshness we've come to expect from Suzuki! Noriko really soars at times – hitting a dynamic groove on the album's originals by Isao – "My Life", "Cadillac Woman", and "Push" – all really unique numbers that rank with the grooviest Japanese jazz vocal work of the time. The set also features an instrumental version of "Stella By Starlight", and the original "Monologue". LP, Vinyl record album

Junie MorrisonEvacuate Your Seats (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ze/Iconoclassic, 1984. New Copy ... $14.99 17.99
A well-circulated solo set from Junie Morrison – by now working very far from the P-Funk empire, and with a groove that fits in nicely with the sound of 80s soul! The album's heavy on basslines, beats, and keyboards – very much an 80s funk evolution from Junie's 70s roots – with the man himself serving up lead vocals that have a light vibe that's very much in an electro-ready sort of style! A few cuts have more pronounced guitar solos, but with the fuzz trimmed to slide in nicely with the more electronic elements in the mix – that compact 80s mode in which everything comes on right down on top of each other in the mix! Titlesinclude "Tease Me", "Stick It In", "Break 6", "Here With You Tonight", "Show Me Yours", "Gyrate", "Driving In A Porsche", and "Techno Freqs". CD features bonus tracks – "Tease Me (Arthur Baker long mix)", "Tease Me (Arthur Baker short)", "Tease Me (Arthur Baker dub)", "Techno Freqs (UK single)", "Techo Freqs (12" rmx)", and "T-Frequan (dub)". Mike Osborne with Harry Miller & Tony LevinBirmingham Jazz Concert ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1976. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 18.99
Unreleased genius from British altoist Mike Osborne – and a set that easily matches his classic albums of the 70s! The double-length set was recorded live in the mid 70s, and is issued here for the first time – a wonderfully tight trio outing that features Osborne's alto alongside the bass of Harry Miller and drums of Tony Levin – in a mode that's decidedly Coltrane-influenced, and which has a searching, spiritual quality that's even deeper than most other British work of the time! We've never heard Osborne play with so much feeling, and Miller's basswork is wonderful too – really underscoring the sound with a full, rich quality that grounds the whole proceedings nicely – a soaring, majestic energy that's a far cry from some of the unstructured freedom from other Brit groups of the same stretch. Tremendous throughout – and with cuts that include "One For George", "Alfie", "Almost Home Kathy", "More Mike", "Ossie's Opener", "Awakening Spirit", and "Cousin Mary". CD

Paradigm ShiftRain Child & The River King ... LP
Better Days/Lawson (Japan), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $42.99 49.99
Electro funk from the Japanese scene of the 80s, but at a level that's nicely deeper than some of the more commercial material of the time – handled with lots of guitar and vocals from Makoto Matsushita, who really seems to have gotten a bit hipper since his First Light work! The vibe is maybe a bit like that when David Sylvian first started going solo – or Talk Talk were moving past the charts – often with some complicated basswork underscoring most tunes, bringing in a good sense of depth – as Makoto delivers thoughtful lyrics penned by Chris Mosdell. Titles include "Stories From The Huge Heart", "Falcon Man's Big Leap", "The Greatest Wonder", "The Naked Girl With The Fever Dream", and "Bringing Home The Singing Fire". LP, Vinyl record album

Emmanuelle ParreninMaison Rose (with bonus 7" single) ... LP
CBS/Souffle Continu (France), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 36.99
An album of fragile beauty and buried darkness – in a space that's somewhere between the work of Nico and Brigitte Fontaine, but a fair bit sweeter overall! Emmanuelle Parrenin sings here in a timeless style that might almost be called folksy – especially in the return to tradition styles of the UK 70s scene – but it's also got a slightly headier feel overall, almost trippy at times, with a sense of crumbling innocence that's further underscored by spare instrumentation that includes hurdy-gurdy, spinet, and dulcimer. Most tunes just feature vocals and some combination of these instruments – and a few numbers feature slightly larger backing, but never a full group mode. Titles include "Ritournelle", "Leiturgie", "Copraze", "Lecharpe De Soie", "Ce Matin A Fremontel", and "Belle Virginie". Amazing vinyl reissue – very heavy cover and vinyl, and beautifully done overall! LP, Vinyl record album
(Comes with a bonus single that features the tracks "17 Decembre" and "La Foret Bleue".)

Quartette Tres BienBoss Tres Bien (Decca pressing) ... LP
Decca, 1964. Very Good ... $11.99
A landmark blend of soul jazz and bossa nova – cut by the legendary Quartette Tres Bien back in the 60s! The group are kind of a "piano trio plus" – an outfit with piano, bass, and drums in the lead – but also plenty of conga and added percussion – a style used here to really underscore the bossa inspiration of the set – often in ways that are more driving and more complicated than original 60s bossa recordings themselves! The feel is really unique – almost equally inspired by African rhythms in parts – and even when the group are playing familiar numbers, then manage to transform the tracks completely with their inventive approach to rhythms and super-searing work on piano! Titles include the jazz dance classic "Boss Tres Bien", plus "Rhodesian Chant", "Always on Saturday", "The Sweetest Sounds", "I Love Paris", "Lover Come Back To Me", and "Days Of Wine & Roses". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing. Cover has light wear, some discoloration from age, and some splitting in the seams and spine.)

Rare EarthLive In Chicago (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Motown (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $28.99 34.99 About January 25, 2023 (delayed)
An unreleased live set from Rare Earth – done on stage in the Windy City in the mid 70s, and with a raw vibe that's maybe even more funky than some of their studio albums from the time! Instrumentation is nice and lean – with heavy drums and bass, and some great fuzz on the guitar that almost gives them a psychedelic soul style at points – as if Norman Whitfield were up there on stage, conducting the whole proceedings! Another great element is the strong use of percussion and congas – which create this Curtom sense of righteousness, and underscore the spontaneity of the live performance – on titles that include "Hey Big Brother", "Big John Is My Name", "Born To Wander", "Get Ready", "I Just Want To Celebrate", and a great two-part take on "I Know I'm Losing You". Tom ScottTom Scott & The LA Express ... LP
Ode, 1974. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A real breakout moment for reedman Tom Scott – the first truly big album for the saxophonist who'd been blowing some great records on his own, and lending his horn to a host of classic jazz and soul sessions too! The groove is a lot sharper and tighter than earlier Scott albums, but never too slick – and definitely has that great ear for a funky undercurrent that seems to bring out the most soulful notes in Tom's horns – underscored here by wicked rhythms from the LA Express combo that features Joe Sample on keyboards, Larry Carlton on guitar, Max Bennett on bass, and John Guerin on drums. Titles include the sublime break track "Sneaking In the Back" – plus "Dahomey Dance", "King Cobra", "Easy Life", "Spindrift", "Vertigo", "LA Expression", and "Strut Your Stuff". SpirogyraFuture Won't Be Long – The Albums 1971 to 1973 (St Radiguns/Old Boot Wine/Bells Boots & Shambles/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 39.99
Three classic albums from this underground group – brought together in a single set, with bonus tracks too! First up is St Radiguns – the debut album from one of the most unique groups of their generation – a group who were partway between acid folk and proggy rock – yet with qualities that were also uniquely their own as well! The group were equally at home with acoustic and electric instruments – but play with a sinister edge that almost hints at a Wicker Man side of the universe, while occasionally warming things up with more intimate, poetic moments. The vocals are great – especially the male leads of Martin Cockerham, which we prefer a bit more to the female work from Barbara Gaskin – and the tunes have this sense of darkness that still gives the album a hell of an edge after all these years. Titles include "The Future Won't Be Long", "Island", "Magical Mary", "Captain's Log", "Time Will Tell", "We Were A Happy Crew", and "The Duke Of Beaufoot". Next is Old Boot Wine – compelling sounds from Spirogyra – a group who have some proggish elements, but also a folksy sensibility too – which makes for a really wonderful balance between jamming moments and more intimate sounds! Guitar and keyboards take plenty of place in the mix – often spinning out strongly – but the group also features a fair bit of acoustic guitar, too – mixed with lovely vocals from Barbara Gaskin, and fragile male leads from Martin Cockerham. Tunes have a slightly poetic quality, but never in a drippy way – and the production is full one minute, light the next – which can really make for a nice sense of shading to the tunes. Titles include "Dangerous Dave", "A Canterbury Tale", "Grandad", "World's Eyes", "Wings Of Thunder", and "Disraeli's Problem". Last is Bells Boots & Shambles – a set that has the group down to a duo – just singer Barbara Gaskin and guitarist/vocalist Martin Cockerham – but have actually used that shift to bring in some additional musicians too, and really find a great way to expand their sound! The album's got some of the most compelling arrangements we've heard from the group – and uses light cello, violin, trumpet, and flute to underscore the sense of color and tone we've always loved in their music – particularly some of those slightly-dark, slightly-spooky elements that always gave them a surprising edge. There's a mix of timeless roots and present darkness in the music that's very unique – and titles include "The Sergeant Says", "Spiggly", "The Furthest Point", "Old Boot Wine", "Parallel Lines Never Separate", and the longer "In The Western World". 3CD set features bonus tracks – "Window", "Melody Maker Man", "Turn Again Lane", "Counting The Cars", and "I Hear You're Going Somewhere". Spooky ToothYou Broke My Heart – So I Busted Your Jaw ... LP
A&M, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $6.99 19.99
An onslaught of fuzz from the reformed version of Spooky Tooth – a group that has Gary Wright very firmly back in the lead on vocals, and the new addition of Mick Jones on guitar – whose lead lines give the group a whole new sense of power! Wright and Jones worked together in Wonderwheel, and are a perfect pair here – with Mick's well-crafted lines underscoring Wright's vocals perfectly – all at a level that prefaces some of the bigger arena rock to come by a few years, but which also falls into none of its cliches at all! Wright's ear for a well-penned tune is still very firmly intact – and the rest of the group deliver some mighty heavy energy on the rhythms – on titles that include "Old As I Was Born", "Wild Fire", "Holy Water", "Times Have Changed", "Moriah", and "Cotton Growing Man". The first single from Kweli's Beautiful Struggle – a weepy slow jam produced by Kanye West, and featuring a strong chorus by Mary J Blige! Mary is what really makes this single a winner. This isn't simply one of those myriad A-list guest spots in which the diva comes into the studio, breathes a line into the make that's then looped over and over for the hook. Mary treats this one the a real soulful effort, which couldn't go down better thanks to Kanye's soul-trained approach, and Talib's laid back wisdom. 12-inch, Vinyl record

TitaL'Incomparable Tita ... CD
Barclay/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99
Beautiful bossa from late 60s France – a really lovely session that mixes the vocals of Tita with jazzy backings from Trio Camara – who we know from their own legendary album on the Saravah label! The sound here is a bit different than bossa from Brazil – somewhat darker at points, carried off in that cool continental mode that would sometimes show up when sounds from Rio were filtered through 60s Paris – kind of an extra level of hipness that really makes for some special music here. There's a bit of additional strings next to the trio's backing, which underscores some elements of sadness and also makes for a bit of a soundtrack feel at points – and other instrumentation includes acoustic guitar and some occasional flute. Titles include "Anjo", "Trapezista", "Zefa", "Um Motivo De Ser", "Beatriz", "Nao Faz Mal", "Quebra Mar", and "Vejo A Tarde Cair". CD

Kim TolliverCome & Get Me I'm Ready ... CD
Chess/Reel Music, 1973. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
One of the deepest soul records ever issued by Chess Records – and the album wasn't even done in Chicago! The album's the only full effort issued under the name of Kim Tolliver – a singer who'd worked previously for Fantasy as Kimberley Briggs – and it's a sublime effort from Tolliver and husband Fred Briggs, who'd worked together previously on work for Stax by Margie Joseph! The style here is quite unique – a mix of Kim's southern soul-styled vocals with some fuller, richer touches – almost in the same way that Gloria Scott comes across on her classic album with Barry White – but a bit more rough around the edges overall. The production is amazing – with a great sense of space and style – and some key use of echo that really underscores the emotion of the tunes. A good part of the album was recorded in Miami – with echoes of the TK modes of the time – but other recording was also done in Cleveland, which might account for the more unique aspects of the set. Regardless of location, though, the album's a tremendously individual effort – a bold, raw statement from Tolliver – filled with emotion that few of her contemporaries could match, and free of any crossover soul cliches that were really bogging down other artists at the time. Most tracks here are original – as original in conception as the sound of the record – and titles include "The Other Side Of Town", "The Way He Used To", "She Don't Know You Like I Do", "Takin A Woman's Stand", "I'm Losing The Feeling", "Learn To Get Along Without You", and "I Need You/Drop Whatever You're Doing".
