REMChronic Town (picture disc) ... LP
IRS/Universal, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
A crucial debut release from REM – a set that's only an EP, but which broke onto the scene with more power than most of the full albums of the time – and which really set the stage for new changes on the American scene to come! The record could arguably be called the beginning of a new voice in US music – one that wasn't just tied to the punk or new wave ripples of the time – as the group were unabashedly non-quirky, warmly acoustic at points, and not afraid to come up with warmly personal material that seems to bridge generations. They'd only follow this set with more greatness on the next two records – but here's the start, with five great cuts that include "1,000,000", "Stumble", "Wolves,Lower", "Gardening At Night", and "Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars)". Cannonball AdderleySomethin' Else (RVG Remaster Edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1958. Used ... $6.99
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing trumpet in a cool tone that's a perfect offset to Cannonball's more soulful style on alto sax – also different than the sound of his brother Nat, who was Adderley's more frequent partner on records. The rest of the group includes Hank Jones on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – and like John Coltrane's Blue Train, the record's more of an "special session" than the usual Blue Note album, but the strength of the players make it one of the more memorable records of its day! Titles include "Somethin' Else", "One For Daddy-O", "Autumn Leaves", "Love For Sale", and a nice moody take on "Dancing In The Dark". CD

Cannonball AdderleyThings Are Getting Better (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1958. Used ... $11.99
An album that definitely lives up to its title – given the great change and evolution in the style of Cannonball Adderley's music – definitely pointed towards the soul jazz fame to come in the 60s! The group here has Adderley's alto in the company of some all-stars who may not be his regular group, but who definitely help keep the whole thing at a top-shelf level throughout – a quintet that features Milt Jackson on vibes, Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. There's still a few echoes of Cannon's earlier bop recordings, but the sound is also moving towards the new modes to come – especially on the classic title cut "Things Are Getting Better". Other cuts include "Just One Of Those Things", "Sounds For Sid", "Groovin High", "Serves Me Right", and "Blues Oriental". Also includes 2 bonus tracks. CD

Prestige, Late 50s. Used ... $5.99
A hipster vocal jazz classic – a full length Prestige album that brings together all of Mose Allison's vocal numbers from his initial run a the label! Mose started out as a pianist, but quickly won even greater attention with his down home, New Orleans-influenced way of singing – a mode that would be copped by many other singers in both rock and soul for years to come – but which still sounds best, here at the source! The recordings feature Mose on piano alongside his vocals – with only bass and drum accompaniment on all numbers – and titles include the mod classics "Parchman Farm" and "Seventh Son", plus "I've Got A Right To Cry", "Young Man's Blues", "Eyesight To The Blind", "If You Live", "One Room Country Shack", and "That's Alright". Ant Trip Ceremony24 Hours ... CD
Cicadelic, 1968. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
A college band, but one with an amazing sound that should have made them huge – had they managed to survive graduation time at Oberlin College! For a combo out in the sticks of Ohio, these guys sound pretty darn great (but let's also not forget that Oberlin's given us Liz Phair, John McIntire, and plenty of other key talents over the years) – and they're a fuzzy little group with a warmly laidback feel to their music – kind of folk-psych, produced here with a nicely naive sort of sensibility. The tunes are every bit as great as better-known work coming out of the New York or LA scenes of the time, and they're quite surprising for their maturity and power overall – as even familiar numbers are way more than just simple covers in the hands of the group. Titles include "Four In The Morning", "Violets Of Dawn", "Hey Joe", "Outskirts", "Elaborations", "Pale Shades Of Gray", and "What's The Matter Now". CD

Neil Ardley, Norma Winstone, Ian Carr, & OthersMike Taylor Remembered (limited 180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Lantern Editions (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $29.99 34.99
A beautiful tribute to the legendary British pianist Mike Taylor – recorded at the equally legendary Landsdowne studios in the early 70s, with contributions from some of Taylor's key contemporaries – and released here for the first time ever! Taylor was a rising star in the London scene of the 60s, but sadly passed away right at the end of the decade – leaving a great sense of loss and unfulfilled promise – part of which is addressed by the work on the set. All tracks are original compositions by Taylor – music penned back in the 60s, and given a more ambitious performance here by a large ensemble directed by Neil Ardley – and featuring Henry Lowther and Ian Carr on trumpets, Barbara Thompson and Ray Warleigh on reeds, Peter Lemer on piano and electric piano, Alan Branscombe on vibes, and Norma Winstone on vocals. There's strands here of some of the other high-concept large ensemble work from the UK in the same generation – echoes of Mike Westbrook or Mike Gibbs – but the style's also more personal too, with more of the spirit of some of Taylor's own small group recordings from his all-too-short career. Titles include "Summer Sounds Summer Sights", "Half Blue/Pendulum", "I See You", "Song Of Love", "Folk Dance No 2", "Jumping Off The Sun", "Black & White Raga", and "Timewind". Okyerema AsanteDrum Message ... CD
Black Fire/Strut (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A legendary album on the Black Fire label from the 70s – a set that features Ghanaian percussionist Oykerama Asante working in the same American mix of funk and spiritual jazz as his labelmates Oneness Of Juju! The set was recorded in the same stretch as the best work from that legendary group, but never came out on LP at the time – and only saw a CD release in the 90s – quite a shame, as the great Plunky Nakabinde plays reeds on the album, and also helps give the whole thing a vibe that's sharp, right on the money, and does a fantastic job of blending Asante's percussion with some wider musical ideas. Oykerama is previously known for his work in the group Hedzoleh Soundz – and there's a similar genre-crossing vibe going on here – as you'll discover on cuts that include "Sabi", "Follow Me", "Asanta Sana", "Never Fly Away From The Funk", "Play A Sweet Rhythm On Them Drums", "Mother Africa", "Kazi's Awakening", and "To The Ancestors". ✨✧ Burt Bacharach/Hal DavidPromises, Promises (remastered pressing) ... CD
United Artists/Ryko, 1968. Used ... $8.99
Burt Bacharach and Hal David's sole entry into the musical genre – a weird little musical that's based on the film The Apartment! The record's a lot less "Broadway" than you might think – and often handled with the same sly syncopated style of Bacharach's regular pop work – particularly that of the later A&M years. And even if you're not the sort to go for the usual sort of musical, this one's filled with some really great little tunes that stand with some of Burt's best later work – and which are almost even more interesting, given some of the themes that get explored! Musical direction is by Harold Wheeler, and Jerry Orbach's one of the key vocalists of the set! Titles include "Upstairs", "Knowing When To Leave", "She Likes Basketball", "Half As Big As Life", "Our Little Secret", "Christmas Day", "Grapes Of Roth", and "Wanting Things". And even better, this new version includes some great improvements – including remastering, a "fix" on the pitch of Jerry Orbach's vocals, and a song order that replicates their appearance in the original musical! Chet BakerChet Baker In New York (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1958. Used ... $4.99
Quite a great session for Chet Baker – one that has him recording in New York, with a hip lineup that includes some incredibly soulful players! The tunes on the set feature Chet in either quartet or quintet formation – working with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Al Haig on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Tracks are longish, and the sound is much more in the mode of Riverside at the time, than the sound of Chet's earlier Pacific Jazz records – and Chet holds his own nicely in this company, giving a hint of the style to come in a few more years. Titles include "Fair Weather", "Hotel 49", "When Lights Are Low", "Solar", and "Blue Thoughts". CD features 1 bonus track. CD

Grand Royal, 1993. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $37.99 39.99
If Paul's Boutique was the Beasties' psychedelic hip hop Sgt Peppers, then Check Your Head is their White Album – a raw, stylistically sprawling, yet always connected batch of live instrumentation – backing rhymes that range from stream of consciousness to expertly written. Check Your Head is also their first outing without the guidance of outside producers, though the trio did bring in a host of regular collaborators like Money Mark and Mario Caldato Jr, who work as well with the Boys as ever. It's stunning how far The Beastie Boys grew creatively over their first few albums, and this point is pretty close to perfection! Titles include "Jimmy James", "Pass The Mic", "Gratitude", "Finger Lickin' Good", "So Whatcha Want", "Time For Livin'", "Something's Got To Give", "Groove Holmes" and "Professor Booty". A bittersweet farewell from The Beatles – a record that definitely shows the fracturing unity of the group, with lots of near-solo moments – but a set that also makes us really wonder what they'd have done with all this genius, had they managed to hold it together! There's great hints here of the solo work to come – especially from George Harrison and John Lennon – and the Phil Spector production really helps open up a new sound for the group. The cover looks a bit vintage, but the set features more contemporary tracks from this legendary UK soul group – the combo who gave birth to Incognito at the end of the 80s, and touched a fair bit of other acts as well! Over the decade, Beggar & Co have kept going strong – with a fantastic blend of soul, jazz, and funk – led here by trumpeter Kenny Wellington, who also handles lead vocals on a number of tracks – in a strong lineup that also features saxes and flute from David Baptiste, vibes from Orphy Robinson, and keyboards from Camelle Hinds! As the title implies, most tracks are variations on other recent material – and titles include "Time", "Somebody Help Me Out (boogie back extended)", "Yesterday's Gone (inst)", and 2021 remasters of "Open Sesame", "Sleeping Giants", "Say What's On Your Mind", "Goin To See My Baby", and "While The City Sleeps". George BensonLove Remembers ... CD
Warner, 1993. Used ... $4.99
Sweet stepping soul from George Benson – a batch of tracks that wraps up his wonderful vocals and guitar with some great contemporary rhythms! The vibe here is nicely laidback – never too smooth, nor some of the more commercial territory that Benson was trying for a decade before – and in a way, it's almost as if George has been digging some of the less mainstream soul sounds of the time, as he's hitting a sound that would certainly appeal to steppers in Chicago, or the indie soul and smooth jazz scene of the early 90s. Benson's got a great way of scatting lightly with his guitar, and there's a leanness to most of the tracks, despite a relatively full lineup of players. Titles include "I'll Be Good To You", "Got To Be There", "My Heart Is Dancing", "Love Remembers", "Come Into My World", "Somewhere Island", "Calling You", "Lovin On Borrowed Time", and "Love Of My Life". Cavda, 1974. Very Good ... $4.99
Veneral Disease never sounded so great! This rare single was written to promote VD awareness in the 70s – and it's pretty amazing! Side one features "It's Free", a track co-written by Gylan Kain, of the Last Poets – and one in a very Last Poets style by The Bishops Of The Holy Rollers – a quartet featuring Kain, Denise Kain, and 2 other vocalists. The tune's got heavy percussion and a bad-rapping sound that makes VD feel even nastier on record than when you get it in person! The flip's got Johnnie Taylor singing the VD-themed tune "Something To Remember Her By" – a strange little number done here with arrangements by Richard Evans, in the best Stax mode of Taylor's other work. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, recording in the very familiar territory of the Birdland nightclub – in a format that was handled previously by the Blue Note label, but maybe never with a lineup this great! The performance features the sublime frontline trio of Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Bobby Timmons on piano – all players that are their youthful best, and completely on fire with creative imagination under Blakey's leadership – the start of a great run for all of them as solo stars too. The tracks are long, and even if the tunes are sometimes familiar, the performances are spectacular – that special Jazz Messengers energy that makes records like this so great. Art BlakeyMoanin' (RVG remastered edition – with bonus track) ... CD
Blue Note, 1958. Used ... $4.99
One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! This transitional version of the Jazz Messengers included two parts – Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons – of the holy Morgan/Shorter/Timmons trilogy, and it's also got the added bonus of Benny Golson on tenor, who was at the height of his power at this point. The record really shines in ways that few Blakey albums shone since his days with Horace Silver – in that it's a forum for fresh new writing, most importantly Golson's landmark compositions "Blues March" and "Along Came Betty", and Timmons' instant classic "Moanin". The whole album's wonderful, though, and Golson's edgey modernism adds a strong dimension to the group's usual soulful romping groove! (And in fact, as a tribute to the group's success, the album was initially named Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but quickly retitled Moanin in this version, after the big hit single!) CD also features a bonus version of "Moanin" and a warm-up track between Lee & Rudy. CD

Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $6.99
One of a number of Art Blakey albums titled after "Night In Tunisia" – and most likely the best! The tune is a perfect fit for the Blakey Jazz Messengers format – long, rhythmic, really stretching out, yet allowing plenty of space for the horn players to solo. Players include Bobby Timmons on piano, Lee Morgan on trumpet, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a killer lineup that's in really classic form here – driven on nicely by Blakey's drums and bass work by Jymie Merritt. Titles include "Night In Tunisia", with Blakey thundering through impeccably – plus the tracks "Yama", "Kozo's Waltz", and a version of Timmons' great "So Tired". CD features bonus tracks "When Your Lover Has Gone" and "Sincerely Diana (alternate)". CD

Art Blakey QuintetNight At Birdland Vol 2 (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1954. Used ... $6.99
A wonderfully hard-storming set – and a record that not only firmly put the Jazz Messengers on the map, but also set a whole new standard for live jazz recording! The group here is the early version of the Messengers – almost co-led by drummer Art Blakey with pianist Horace Silver – and featuring Clifford Brown on trumpet, just a few months before his early death – plus Lou Donaldson on alto and Curley Russell on bass. The presence of alto instead of tenor makes the sound slightly different than later incarnations of the group – and the overall approach is one that virtually defines the shift from straight bop to hardbop in the 50s – a mode that both Blakey and Silver were key in creating. Tracks include "Wee-Dot", "Quicksilver", "Confirmation", and the bonus tracks "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Lou's Blues". CD

Johnny BristolBristol's Creme ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good ... $7.99
An excellent smooth soul groover from Johnny Bristol! The album has Johnny stepping into a more sophisticated groove than he used on his early 70s albums for MGM – mixing together styles that sound a lot like those used by artists like Leroy Hutson or Leon Ware at the time, a mix of well-produced backings with just the right touch of strings, keyboards, and tight rhythms. Johnny's voice has a bit rootsier quality than you might be used to for this sort of album – which makes for an even more unique sound, especially on the mellower cuts. Tracks include "Do It To My Mind", "Have Yourself A Good Time Thinkin' Bout The Good Times", "You Turned Me On To Love", "I Sho Like Groovin' With Ya", and "She Came Into My Life". Nice one! One of the greatest albums ever for Blue Note – and the only album recorded by tenor player Tina Brooks that was issued during his lifetime! Brooks had blown on other Blue Note sessions before, but here, working as a leader, his sound is tremendous – vaguely to the left of center of some of his other tenor counterparts on the label, but with an equally impeccable approach to soul and rhythm. Side one features Brown with the modernist Gigi Gryce on flute and alto sax – plus Charlie Rouse on tenor, John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – a lineup that has a strong sense of soul, balanced with a dose of modernism – on titles that include the classic "Hymn to the Orient" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Easy Living", "Cherokee", "Wail Bait", and "Minor Mood". Side two features an equally sharp group – with Lou Donaldson on some excellent alto, and the great Elmo Hope on piano – on titles that include "Brownie Speaks", "De Dah", "Cookin", "You Go To My Head", and "Carving The Rock". CD features great mastering and 18 tracks in all! CD

James BrownIn The Jungle Groove – Expanded & Remastered ... CD
Polydor, Early 70s/1986. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Massive – and one of the best James Brown compilations ever, filled with rare and unreleased material! This completely essential set features tracks pulled from James' best years ever – the mighty early 70s, when he was working with the JBs, and laying down tracks that would forever change the face of funk! The tunes on the album are right up there with the best work on classic albums like The Payback, Doin It To Death, Hot Pants, and any of the other killer Polydor funk albums by James – and most of them were pulled from sessions for those records, and brought together in this format for the first time in the late 80s. The centerpiece of the set is a 9 minute version of "Funky Drummer", and other highlights include new versions of "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose (remix)", "Soul Power (mono re-edit)", and "Talkin' Loud & Sayin' Nothin (remix)". The set's also got bonus beats of "Funky Drummer", a long single take of "Hot Pants (She Got To Use What She Got To Get What She Wants)" (8:42 minutes long!), and the nice rare track "I Got To Move" – previously unreleased, and nice and long! Plus, this new version features the previously unissued extended mix of "Blind Man Can See It". CD

Polydor, 1962. Used ... $3.99
A landmark album that forever changed the face of live recordings – and soul music too! As has been told and retold often, King records not only had the genius idea of bringing recording equipment into the Apollo Theater to catch James in a smoking live setting – the sort of show that really set his fans on fire – but they also went out of their way to record and re-record the audience, creating a wonderful interplay on the record between James and the crowd. The result is the stuff of legend – and the record's filled with loads of nice tracks like "I'll Go Crazy", "Try Me", "I Don't Mind", "Lost Someone", "Think", "Night Train", and the massive medley featuring "Please Please Please/You've Got The Power/I Found Someone/Why Do You Do Me/I Want You So Bad/I Love You Yes I Do/Strange Things Happen". Muzak (Japan), Late 60s/1970s/1980s. Used ... $28.99
Some of the greatest work we've ever heard from Dutch singer Ann Burton – rare recordings presented here for the first time ever, and arguably even better than some of the commercially-issued material she cut back in the day! There's a light, swinging style to many of these tunes we really like – especially the 60s cuts that make up the first half of the record, which feature Ann in an ebullient, highly jazzy mode that recalls Blossom Dearie and some of our other favorites of the 60s. Lyrics are in English throughout, and backings are a variety of combos – and all the original recordings are from the archives of the Netherlands Institute of Sound & Vision. Titles include "Put On A Happy Face", "Once", "The Wildest Gal In Town", "Gypsy In My Soul", "Me Myself & I", "The End Of A Love Affair", "Round About", "Humpty Dumpty Heart", and "In The Wee Small Hours". Donald ByrdFree Form (RVG Remaster Edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $9.99
A landmark album for Donald Byrd – one that marks a key departure in his sound! Donald's really opening up on this one – picking up more of the soulful and the spiritual side of jazz, and moving from the hardbop and modern jazz of his late 50s years – no surprise, since he's surrounded by an incredibly hip group – with Wayne Shorter on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The tracks are longish and lyrical, with wonderfully-crafted solos, and some fresh writing from both Hancock and Byrd that really mark the album as one of the most inventive Blue Notes of the time! Titles include a great instrumental version of "Pentacostal Feelin", plus the cuts "Nai Nai", "Night Flower", and "French Spice" – all of which were written by Byrd. Plus, this CD also features the bonus cut "Three Wishes", written by Hancock! CD

Donald ByrdSlow Drag (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1968. Used ... $8.99
Beautiful stuff – and one of the best Donald Byrd albums of the 60s! The album is a killer all the way through – recorded with a group that Byrd maintained for 2 years, one that featured Sonny Red on alto sax, Cedar Walton on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all of whom come together magnificently in a razor-sharp formation, mixing hardbop and soul jazz with an edge that you'll hardly find on any of Byrd's other albums from the time. A lot of the credit is due to Sonny Red – who plays with a raspy tone that's odd for the alto, and which really draws out Byrd's solo skills. Walton's got a heavy left-handed approach that really hits some great grooves – and the team of Booker and Higgins leap lyrically, yet also throw just the right amount of funk into the rhythms. Includes the Blue Break classic "Jelly Roll", the amazing jazz dancer "Book's Bossa", and the sublime "Slow Drag", one of the strangest groovers you'll ever hear! CD

RGE/Light In The Attic, 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A seminal set from Erasmo Carlos – a record that has him stepping past the simpler rock modes of his youth, and really embracing some of the great changes going on in Brazilian music at the start of the 70s! These changes aren't just the expected psych modes, but also some of the more lofty, complicated arrangements used by artists like Marcos Valle or Edu Lobo – a mode that comes through beautifully here and sets up Erasmo's vocals with these incredible backings that really make him sound fantastic – a bit funky here, a bit groovy there – and sometimes with this more cerebral sound that none of his listeners would have expected a few records back. Titles include "Estou Dez Anos Atrasado", "Jeep", "Teletema", "Sentado A Beira Do Caminho", "Coqueiro Verde", "A Bronca Da Galinha", "Menina", and "Saudosismo". CTI, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of Ron Carter's best from the 70s – a hip and subtle effort recorded for CTI, with a small group that includes Joe Henderson on tenor, Roland Hanna on piano, and Billy Cobham on drums! Henderson's tenor work dominates the album, and the long tracks really let him snake around mightily – blowing with that dark edge that we totally love, and taking the record in much different directions than some of Carter's other albums. Richard Tee also plays electric piano on the title "117 Special" – and other tunes include "A Feeling", "All Blues", "Rufus", and "Will You Still Be Mine". This CTI 40th Anniversary edition was remastered using the original analog tapes. CD

Ron Carter with Eric Dolphy & Mal WaldronWhere? (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
New Jazz, 1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A haunting and unusual batch of tracks from bassist Ron Carter – working here with a group that includes spiritual modernists Eric Dolphy on reeds and Mal Waldron on piano – both players who really add a lot to the set! In a way, the album's more like Dolphy's own work as a leader from the time than the sort of music usually associated with Carter – and Ron really seems to let the reedman shape the overall sound of the set with his tremendous work on alto, flute, and bass clarinet. Carter plays a bit of cello in addition to his bass – giving the record a nicely eerie sound at points – and Waldron's piano, as always, is excellent during this point in his career. Titles include Randy Weston's "Where" and "Saucer Eyes", plus "Bass Duet", which features Carter dueting with George Duvivier, and a very nice version of "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". CD

Blue Note, 1958. Used ... $6.99
One of the most legendary albums on Blue Note – or maybe THE most legendary albums on Blue Note – a stunning session that shows what the label was capable of when it was really hitting on all burners – from the lineup to the music to the production – and even the classic cover art on the front! The album's a crowning achievement for pianist Sonny Clark – a player who'd already brought greatness to the world before the record, but really knocks it out of the park during the session – leading a razor sharp lineup that includes Art Farmer on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all coming together with some magic in the studio, crafting a sound that forever put Blue Note on the map! Tracks are long, open-ended, and almost effortlessly soulful – and titles include Clark's classics "Cool Struttin" and "Blue Minor", plus versions of "Sippin At Bells" and "Deep Night". Plus, this CD also adds 2 long bonus cuts – "Lover" and "Royal Flush" – both of which weren't on the original album! CD

One of the most classic Blue Note sessions ever – and for good reason too! From the cover, to the title, to the hardbopping grooves of the set, this Sonny Clark late 50s smoker is one of the label's best – as pianist Clark is working here at the height of his powers – leading an all-star group that includes Art Farmer on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Hank Mobley on tenor, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – all coming together magically on open-ended tunes that tighten up from the blowing session format, and really send the groove home! Plus, Sonny's writing is also great – as the set's got a number of great originals by Clark – and titles include "Bootin' It", "Sonny's Mood", "Shoutin On A Riff", and "Dial S For Sonny". Plus, this "Connoisseur" reissue CD also includes extra photos and a bonus alternate take of the cut "Bootin' It"! CD

Classic early John Coltrane for Prestige – less a bold statement as a leader than a strong batch of blowing session-styled tracks that show how well Coltrane could hold his own with more established players! The groups on the set vary from track to track – and feature players that include Sahib Shihab, Mal Waldron, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Al Heath – plus underappreciated Philly trumpeter Johnnie Splawn. Trane's in great form here – even though the overall set's a bit less structured than some of his later albums – and his tone and solo approach are already stepping out from the rest of the pack with great vigor! Hat Art (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Familiar tunes from the John Coltrane songbook – but presented here in the kind of freewheeling live versions that really made concert work by the classic quartet so legendary! First up are two long tracks recorded in Berlin in 1963 – an 8 minute take on "Naima", and a soaring 21 minute run on "My Favorite Things" – both slightly inside, and handled by Coltrane on tenor and soprano, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums! The second half of the set is even more searing – a 1965 performance of the complete "Love Supreme" suite of four tracks – done in Antibes in July of that crucial year for the group. All performances are wonderful – the kind of live Coltrane material that has us keep digging for concert recordings over the years, even though we treasure his studio recordings too. CD

John ColtraneLove Supreme – Live In Seattle ... CD
Impulse, 1965. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic addition to the John Coltrane catalog, and a set that's wonderful for so many different reasons it's hard to fit them all in one short passage! As the title implies, the album features a rare live performance of "Love Supreme" – done in 1965, when the work was new both to the world, and the classic Coltrane quartet with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Yet the version here is also very different than the album reading – looser, with more "interlude" passages – at a level that already has the group drinking in the spirit of the tune, and finding a way to rise with a new spiritual majesty! Another key part of the recording is the presence of Pharoah Sanders on tenor – making a very early appearance with the group – amidst a septet lineup that also features a very young Carlos Ward on alto, and Donald Rafael Garrett on bass – players who expand the lineup in ways that show some of Coltrane's growing experiments past the quartet structure. The whole thing was recorded at the Penthouse Club in Seattle – a place that's given us some other fantastic "lost" recordings from the 60s in recent years – and the record is essential listening, even if you own the studio Love Supreme record, or any other Coltrane records at all. A beautiful album that more than lives up to its evocative title – an early session from John Coltrane, filled with long tracks that slide along brilliantly! As with many other classic Prestige albums from Trane, backing is by the trio of Red Garland piano, Paul Chambers bass, and Art Taylor drums – all holding back nicely when Coltrane opens up on his solos, but also coloring the tunes with soulful lyricism in a masterful understatement. Creedence Clearwater Revival may not have actually been born on the bayou – they were long-timers in the San Francisco scene of the 60s – but they do a hell of a job of reinventing swamp rock on this second stunning album! The quartet are a masterpiece of spare, unbridled power – the tremendous guitar and vocals of John Fogerty, strong rhythm guitar support of brother Tom, driving drums of Doug Clifford, and rolling bass of Stu Cook – all forged into a sound that's maybe more perfectly a summation of the blend of blues, funk, rock, and soul than some of the groups of the south were turning out at the time. A beautiful comeback LP recorded by LA alto genius Sonny Criss in the mid 60s – his first American session after a few years in France, and a few years off the scene back home! Sonny's time away had profound effects on his playing – and on this album, he returns transformed from the straight bop mode of his early days, into a mature sensitive artist in sound – capable of an amazing range of emotion, tone, and style! A number of the tracks in this set are pop tunes or standards – like "Black Coffee", "Days Of Wine & Roses", and "When Sunny Gets Blue" – but Criss plays them with a style that transforms them into something completely new, with a lyricism and emotional edge that extends well beyond the original structure of the song. Other tracks include "Steve's Blues", "Greasy", and "Sunrise Sunset" – and the CD features the bonus track "Love For Sale". CD

The title's terrible, but the album's a great one – a really classic-styled jam session, of the sort that the Prestige label hardly ever recorded! The session features 4 tenor giants of slightly older vintage – Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Coleman Hawkins, Arnett Cobb, and Buddy Tate – all coming together in some loosely-structured arrangements that offer the same sympathetic blowing space that you might get from an all-star tenor date on Verve. Rhythm is by a trio with Shirley Scott on organ, George Duvivier on bass, and Art Edgehill on drums – and titles include "Very Saxy", "Fourmost", "Foot Pattin", and "Light & Lovely". CD

A strange mix of material – but some great work overall! Most of the record features Miles Davis recording with a quintet that includes Thelonious Monk on piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – on longer versions of "The Man I Love" (in 2 takes), "Swing Spring", and "Bemsha Swing". These sides have a great bop/modern approach that's a nice extension of the styles that Jackson and Davis were playing on Blue Note in earlier years. Also added to the set is one number from 1956 – a version of "Round Midnight" recorded in early sessions with John Coltrane on tenor, and the Red Garland Trio on rhythm – different than the rest of the tracks, but still quite nice! A tremendous Italian police soundtrack from the team of Guido and Maurizio De Angelis – one that has a haunting approach served up in equal parts action and sentiment! The core melody here is one right out of Morricone's book of the time – a slow-building, sweet-stepping one that's a far bit different than US cop show work – and which sits nicely next to some more upbeat numbers that work in a bit of jazz alongside funkier basslines and a few darker numbers too. There's a slight electric feel to many numbers, but instrumentation is often heavy on flute too – and in a way, there's a fair bit of qualities here that remind us of Stelvio Cipriani's best from the same period. Muhal Richard AbramsAfrisong ... CD
Why Not/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99 About December 7, 2022
One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by this legendary AACM pianist! The album was a rare Japanese-only session from 1975, but recorded in Chicago – and it features Muhal playing solo – in beautifully warm spiritual tones that are very different from his playing on many other albums from the time. The work is wonderfully introspective, showing a whole new side to Abrams' genius – the sensitive, contemplative keyboardist who occasionally emerges during some of Abrams' larger group sessions, but who usually gets pushed back in the fray of larger instrumental interplay. The whole album's extremely beautiful, and it's darn near impossible to find in the original! Tracks include "Afrisong", "The Infinitive Flow", "Hymn To The East", "Roots", and "The New People". CD

✨✧ Muhal Richard Abrams & Amina Claudine MyersDuet ... LP
Black Saint (Italy), 1981. Near Mint- ... $24.99
One of our favorite albums ever from pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – a set of spare duets with Amina Claudine Myers, and a real standout from the early days of the Black Saint label! We really love Muhal in a spare setting – as it gives you the chance to hear a side of his piano playing that really doesn't come through in his large group sets. Given the added sensitivity that Myers brings to her music, the company here is wonderful – steeped in a range of jazz piano traditions, explored by both players with a sense of creative freedom that's only matched by their collaborative warmth on the date. Both players work on acoustic piano, but there's also some percussion on the set too – and titles include "Transparency Of Lobo Lubu", "Miss Amina", "Down The Street From The Gene Ammons Public School", and "Dance From The East". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear, a fairly large spot of glue with some tape remnants in front, and is bent at the top left corner.)

Johnny AceMemorial Album ... CD
Duke/MCA, Early 50s. Used ... $4.99
The only full album from Johnny Ace – a key figure in the Memphis scene of the 50s, and one of the first great casualties of rock and roll! Johnny was one of the first singers to record for the legendary Duke label, and worked in a mode that helped transform the smoother style of the west coast postwar R&B singers into a rougher, rawer mode that would pave the way for Memphis soul in years to come. And although Johnny died a tragic early death (and partially because of it), the impact of his work was tremendous, even in the few short years for which he recorded for Duke – leading to countless posthumous collections, mostly illegitimate, which often presented Johnny's work in less-than-superior conditions. This set is still the best – and features 12 tracks that Ace recorded for the Duke label. Titles include "How Can You Be So Mean", "My Song", "The Clock", "Cross My Heart", "Anymore", "Don't You Know", "Saving My Love For You", "So Lonely", and "Pledging My Love". CD

Idris Ackamoor & The PyramidsShaman ... LP
Strut (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $27.99 29.99
A tremendous return to form for reedman Idris Ackamoor and his Pyramids group – and a record that we love every bit as much as his classic material from the 70s! There's a power, righteousness, and urgency to this album that we haven't heard from Ackamoor in years – very much the kind of material that's both a message and a medicine for the planet – of the sort that first inspired Ackamoor's generation in the 70s – and which is rarely carried off in a contemporary context this well! Idris plays tenor, but also delivers some surprisingly wonderful vocals and a few very powerful spoken parts too – and the rest of the lineup features Margaux Simmons on flute, Bobby Cobb on guitar, Ruben Ramos Medina on bass, Jack Yglesies on percussion, Sandra Poindexter on viola and violin, and Giole Pagliaccia on drums. The vibe here is like the vintage Black Fire Records label at its best – and titles include "Salvation", "Theme For Cecil", "When Will I See You Again", "Shaman", "Tango Of Love", "Dogon Mysteries", and "The Last Slave Ship". Leo AcostaAcosta (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Capitol/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 36.99
A killer set from funky drummer Leo Acosta – a Mexican musician, but one who draws plenty of influence here from the New York scene – before turning the whole thing into a set of weird and wild sounds that are very much his own! Leo's clearly got some Latin soul vibe going on here – but the rhythms are often a bit more complex, as are the arrangements – with all sorts of interesting elements coming in and out of the songs, both from a vocal and instrumental perspective – although the record is definitely focused more on the latter! There's a fair bit of funky moments that remind us of those later funk records that Perez Prado cut for Orfeon – and titles include "Alma Latina", "Carga Pesada", "Rencorosa", "Todo Termino", "La Novia Hippie", "Noches De Viaje", "Mi Guitarra", and "El Campeon". George AdamsParadise Space Shuttle ... CD
Timeless/Solid (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99 About December 7, 2022
A tremendous moment for the great George Adams as a leader – a record that won the reedman widespread attention after some key work in the bigger groups of Gil Evans and Charles Mingus! Adams is a searing, soulful player right from the start – stepping out strongly on tenor at the kickoff of the record, but also blowing some flute with this moodier, more spiritual tone that really deepens our appreciation of his talents as a musician. The rest of the group is filled with similar spiritual energy – and includes Ron Burton on piano, Don Pate on bass, Al Foster on drums, and Azzedin Weston on percussion. The style is nicely different than some of George's later work with Don Pullen – maybe a bit more straightforward, but in a great way that really unlocks his voice as a leader – and titles include "Funk A Roonie Peacock", "Metamorphosis for Mingus", "Paradise Space Shuttle", and "Intentions". George Adams/Don Pullen QuartetEarth Beams ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99 About December 21, 2022
A firey session from the quartet of George Adams and Don Pullen – a set that has the group stretching out in some of their most spiritual modes, yet still finding plenty of time to swing as well! Adams is tremendous on tenor – a very fresh voice in the post-Coltrane world, with phrasing that is all his own – even more amplified when he switches to flute – and Pullen's got this ability to go outside, and show his knowledge of the darker corners of the keyboard – yet never let that side of his playing overwhelm things, possibly because the rhythmic accompaniment from Cameron Brown on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums is so strong. Tracks are all long, and very individual – with the group in high spirits on the titles "Earth Beams", "Magnetic Love Field", "Saturday Nite In The Cosmos", "More Flowers", and "Dionysus". CD

Cannonball Adderley74 Miles Away/Walk Tall ... LP
Capitol, 1967. Very Good+ ... $16.99
A stone classic from Cannonball Adderley – and a pivotal set that has him continuing the live recording setting of some of his best 60s albums, while also stretching forward to some of the more inventive ideas of the latter part of the decade! David Axelrod produced, and the album's definitely got his ear firmly in place – a great way of bringing together the album's hip instrumentation – Cannon's alto, Nat Adderley's cornet, and the wicked electric piano of Joe Zawinul – played here in a style that would go onto have a huge influence on countless other musicians on the instrument. Rhythm is by Victor Gaskin on bass and Roy McCurdy on drums – and as with other Axelrod live albums, there's some great spoken bits left in the mix – Cannon's charming conversation with the audience, which really opens up the tunes. Titles include the 2 title hits – "Walk Tall" and "74 Miles Away" – plus "I Remember Bird", "Oh Babe", and "Do Do Do". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo rainbow label pressing. Cover has a split bottom, light wear.)

Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Quintet In San Francisco ... LP
Riverside, 1959. Very Good ... $34.99
One of the greatest Cannonball Adderley albums from the Riverside years – a completely smoking live date recorded in San Francisco, often with long tracks that really let the group open up and do their thing! The lineup here is that classic one that first grabbed attention – the group with brother Nat on cornet, Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums – and a young Bobby Timmons on piano, really cooking things up with tremendous drive, energy, and a sense of the groove! Titles include a great workout on Timmons' classic "This Here", plus originals "You Got It" and Spontaneous Combustion", and a great version of "Hi Fly". Soul jazz at its best, by one of the groups who gave the genre its name in the first place! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing – small blue label with silver text, microphone logo, and deep groove! Cover has masking taped seams, some surface wear & aging.)
