✨✧ George BensonGive Me The Night ... LP
Qwest/Warner, 1980. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Yipes! This one made everyone a bucket of money – especially Quincy Jones, whose new Qwest imprint the record was one of the first to grace. George has come a long way from his roots with Jack McDuff here – but in a way that kind of has us impressed, as he's grooving away slickly on guitar, laying down some smooth vocals that we never would have imagined from his mid 60s recordings. Includes the massive hit "Give Me The Night", a cover of "Moody's Mood", and the tracks "Star Of A Story (X)", "Midnight Love Affair", "What's On Your Mind", and "Dinorah, Dinorah". The sound of a million supermarkets and elevators during the 80s! LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing. Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

✨✧ Joy DivisionUnknown Pleasures ... CD
Factory/Qwest, 1979. Used ... $4.99
A stunning little record – and one that still chills us to the bone after all these years! The set's the first (and one of the few) from Joy Division – and really set a whole new standard for the post-punk underground – thanks partly to the group's brooding sense of darkness, but also to the brilliant production from Martin Hannett – who uses slight bits of electronics to augment the group's stark guitars and Ian Curtis' moody vocals. The whole thing's a classic – and titles include "Disorder", "She's Lost Control", "New Dawn Fades", "Interzone", and "I Remember Nothing". CD
(Textured booklet.)

Ernie WattsSanctuary ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1986. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
Quite possibly Ernie Watts' biggest album ever – a set of soulful fusion done for Quincy Jones' Qwest imprint with tight arrangements and production from keyboardist Don Grusin! As with other Watts albums of the time, there's as much soul going on here as there is jazz – vocals from Phil Perry on 3 of the album's tracks, and an overall sound that picks up plenty of rhythms and instrumental inflections from 80s soul – yet leaves more than enough solo space for Ernie's work on alto, soprano, and tenor sax. Titles include "Homeland", "Cowboy Dreams", "She Feels Good", "Taj", "Chinook", "City Speak", and "The Peace Offering". CD
