✨✧ MobMob (Private Stock) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Private Stock/Octave (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great work from this blue-eyed soul group of the 70s – one who've been picked and kept alive by some key underground scenes over the years – like the Northern Soul world of the UK, and the beach music scene in the Carolinas! The group here have some key jazz contributions from Mike Melvoin on piano, Dennis Budimir on guitar, and Tom Scott on tenor – and as with their first record, there's a nice current of soul running through the music – a way of using soulful elements in subtle ways, which is really the appeal of these guys – as they really know how to slide in with a compelling style and a warm vocal approach! Titles include "Get It Up For Love", "I Can't Stop This Love Song", "When You Get Right Down To It", "Who's Foolin' Who", and "Magical Lady". CD features four bonus tracks, all singles – "Skysurf", "Can't Let You Down", "Gemini Lady", and "Love Connection". CD

Peter LemongelloDo I Love You ... CD
Private Stock/Octave (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
Peter Lemongello has a sound that's a bit like his look on the cover – more mature than other pop stars of the time, and able to serve up a sound that really matches that look! There's kind of a smooth, adult approach to the album – echoes of the work of late 60s singers like Jack Jones or Vic Damone, but given some 70s adult contemporary production at points too – never too overdone, and with a style that's surprisingly intimate for the Private Stock label. The album's got a great AOR groover in the tune "All You Get From A Love Song Is Love" – and other titles include "The Hungry Years", "Miss You Nights", "If You Walked Away", "When I Think Of You", and "Where Did We Go Wrong". Franklin MicareFranklin Micare ... CD
Private Stock/Octave (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $9.99 24.99
Maybe the only album we've ever seen from Franklin Micare – a set that mixes sweet AOR pop with some of the soulful currents of the Private Stock label in the 70s! Franklin's got a way of soaring at times that's a bit like labelmate Frankie Valli – but without that unique Valli vocal sound – and the record uses some nice grooves at times to really push the currents in Micare's original tunes – fresher than some of the AOR work on the bigger labels of the time, almost with an ear towards revamping a singer/songwriter approach for the time. Titles include "Instant Electricity", "If You Love Me Love Me Right", "Hot Jazz", "Delectable", and "Nobody". CD

Walter MurphyFifth Of Beethoven ... LP
Private Stock, 1976. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A huge crossover album of the 70s – one that took an east coast disco groove, and introduced influences from a wide variety of classical themes – best summed up in the title hit "A Fifth Of Beethoven", which was a surprisingly successful radio tune at the time! The effort's a strange one, but was part of a larger movement at the time that was introducing many older musical modes – such as standards or showtunes – onto the dancefloor in an effort to give the less underground clubgoers something to sink their teeth into. And while the approach seemed like a bit of a gimmick, it was also probably inspired by Deodato's big hit with "Zarathustra" and a few other classical themes – echoed here by Murphy's great keyboard work on a few other numbers. The album features the classical tracks "Flight 76", "Night Fall", "Fifth Of Beethoven", and "Russian Dressing" – plus the non-classical Murphy originals "California Strut" (with vocals by Angie Bofil), "Be Your Own Best Friend", "Suite Love Symphony", and "Midnight Express". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Natural GasNatural Gas ... LP
Private Stock, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $4.99
A supergroup of sorts, with members from bigger earlier British groups – working here with the great Felix Pappalardi at the production helm for their one and only release! The album mixes upbeat romping tunes that have that catchy UK pop mode of the period with a few mellower moments – all the kind of cuts that almost could have made this one a crossover success, but which likely fell between the cracks as one of the many overlooked projects on the Private Stock label. Titles include "The Right Time", "Miracle Mile", "Dark Cloud", "You can Do It", "Little Darlin", and "Once Again A Love Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Samantha SangEmotion (with bonus track) ... CD
Private Stock/Octave (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
A great bit of mellow soul from the disco generation – a record that's maybe best known for its big title hit, which has Samantha Song working with The Bee Gees – but one that's got a lot more depth overall, thanks to the work of genius producer Nick DeCaro! You might remember Nick's work with Claudine Longet in the 60s on A&M, and here he gets a similar sort of gentle glide out of Samantha – a singer whose pitch is very similar to some of the big hit females of the disco years, but who mostly works here in a laidback groove that brims over with all sorts of slinky, sexy modes! Titles include "Emotion", "You Keep Me Dancing", "Change Of Heart", "But If She Moves You", "When Love Is Gone", "Living Without Your Love", and "Charade". CD features the bonus track "Dance With You (special disco mix)". CD

An interesting turn for Brian Hyland – especially considering his earlier, sunnier pop! Titles include "Basic Lady", "What You Want The Girl To Do", "We Flew Away", "I Feel Good With You Baby", and "Don't Wanna Discuss It". LP, Vinyl record album

An overlooked AOR gem from this cool southern group – one who've got a nicely funky vibe at times, and a style that creates this different spin on LA styles of the period! The vocals have an electrified vibe that works very well with the keyboards and guitar – and there's plenty of soulful currents in the rhythms that almost make some of the best cuts sound like the midtempo AWB gems from the late 70s! Titles include "City Of The Future", "Call Me", "Sunset Eyes", "A Fool In Line", "Little Bird", and "Fat Boy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jose FelicianoSweet Soul Music (with bonus track) ... CD
Private Stock/Octave (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked 70s gem from the great Jose Feliciano – a set that really continues the warm soul styles he'd hit on his last few years at RCA – a wonderful blend for his unique vocals and his tremendous way of putting over a tune! The set was recorded down at Muscle Shoals, but it's got a nicely subtle approach that never tries to lean on the modes of that studio too strongly – avoiding some of the cliches that other records might showcase in such a setting – and throughout it all, it's clear that Jose's the star in the spotlight, using that warmly crackling vocal approach in a wonderful way – especially on the more upbeat modern soul moments. Titles include "Every Woman", "Marguerita", "Loving Her Was Easier", "Sweet Soul Music", "I Love Making Love To You", "Love Comes From Unexpected Places", and "Funny/Night Life". CD features the bonus track "What I Wanna Do". CD

✨✧ Essra MohawkEssra ... CD
Private Stock/Octave (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked album of blue-eyed soul from Essra Mohawk – a singer who seemed to get better as the 70s moved on, and who works here with some nice jazzy touches in the backings! The album's got some great arrangements from Sonny Burke, who also plays keyboards – and the overall presentation of the album is more soul than you might expect, right down to some of the clubbier rhythms at the bottom, which are the more familiar approach of the Private Stock label at the time! Essra's vocals are great throughout – very distinct, in ways that make the album a surprising treasure – on titles that include "Summersong", "I Wanna Feel Ya", "God Help It", "Appointment With A Dream", and "Holy Trinity".
