A fantastic quintet, and one who definitely earn the "
pride" in their name – a set
of fantastic musicians who could all let their egos get in the way
of the music, but who instead come together with a collaborative achievement that's really mesmerizing from the first note to the last! The set begins with one long improvisation, followed by two shorter tracks – but all seem to have this cohesive, organic quality that builds slowly out
of the inspirations
of individual group members contributing to the whole – both Joshua
Abrams and Guillaume
Seguron on basses, Chad
Taylor on drums and Mbira, Daunik
Lazro on tenor and baritone, and the mighty Joe
McPhee on alto, soprano, and pocket trumpet! The versatility
of McPhee should come as no surprise to anyone who's enjoyed his music over the years – and that spirit really seems to infect everyone here, especially
Lazro, who's maybe sounding more essential here than we've heard in awhile. Chad
Taylor, as always, is magnificent – and titles include "An Unanswered Question", "An Unquestioned Answer", and "Enough".
