✨✧ Terry Gibbs & Bill HarrisWoodchoppers' Ball (aka Ex-Hermanites) ... LP
Mode/Premier, 1957. Very Good ... $7.99
A repackaging of the album Ex Hermanites – originally issued with Bill Harris as a leader! On the set, trombonist Harris leads a quintet of "Ex Hermanites" – that is, players who used to work, like Bill, in the group of Woody Herman – and who are stepping out here on their own in a swinging batch of small group numbers! The origin of and setting for the players is no accident – as Herman's group of the era was such a hotbed of musical activity that it was a key force in jazz for players getting together and trying out ideas of their own. Harris himself is a great guiding force on the set – blowing with a style that's fluidly soulful, and warmly spontaneous – accompanied by Terry Gibbs on vibes, Lou Levy on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – the latter 3 of whom make one heck of a great rhythm section! Titles include "Everywhere", "Apple Honey", "Lemon Drop", "Early Autumn", "Blue Flame", and "Laura". LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby TroupPiano Magic (aka Bobby Swings Tenderly) ... LP
Premier, 1957. Near Mint- ... $5.99
A rare all-instrumental outing from Bobby Troup – best known for his work as a singer and songwriter at the time! But like a number of Bobby's contemporaries on the male vocal scene, Troup was equally well-skilled at handling the keys – no doubt because he'd frequently be called to accompany himself when trying out a tune at session, or during a more intimate live performance. Here, the group's a larger one than might be expected – a septet that features horn work by Bob Enevoldsen, Stu Williamson, Ted Nash, and Ronnie Lang – all of whom are featured in some nicely arranged passages, but who often step aside to let Bobby have plenty of space to solo. And we've gotta admit, we like Troup's vocals so much we wouldn't expect his piano to be that entertaining – but he really sparkles with a lightly playful approach on tracks that include "Always", "I See Your Bass Before Me", "It Never Entered My Mind", and "Stella By Starlight". BEP, 2000. Very Good+ 2LP ... $9.99
A very strong second LP by BEP – and one that does a surprisingly great job of mixing soul-based production with more hip-hop oriented modes! Tracks include the Premier-produced "Bep Empire" (is it just us, or are most of the NuHoppers nearly always at their best when they rely on tried and true hip hop production?), "Weekends", "Get Original", "Cali To New York" featuring De La Soul, "On My Own" featuring Les Nubian & Mos Def, "Release", "Bridging The Gaps", "Go Go", "Rap Song" featuring Wyclef, "Bringing It Back", "Tell Your Mama Come", the great single "Request Line" featuring Macy Gray, and more. Nonato BuzarE O Pais Tropical ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 1975. Used ... $19.99
An obscure batch of jazzy samba tracks from Nonato Buzar – an overlooked talent who's one of Brazil's best soul samba artists of the 70s! The record's got a really strong presentation style – Nonato's guitar is upfront in the mix, and he sings lead vocals on most cuts, augmented by some occasional female vocals, and some ensemble singing. The production has a nice groovy sound with its roots in late 60s MPB – but the overall groove has clearly been influenced by other 70s work in Brazil. Titles include "Ceu Vermelho", "Ta Chegando A Hora", "Estou Triste Sim", and the silly "Le Premier Safari De Caroline De Monaco". CD

East West/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1995. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $32.99 38.99
Das EFX's third album finds them holding down a more jam-packed approach than ever before – longer by half than their previous LPs and with a strong sense of purpose! Das EFX appeared with such a unique rhyme style, by this point they really needed to balance the tasks of being recognizable as as the hard-hitting duo with the distinctive approach to rhymes, without relying on it as a gimmick, and here they largely succeed – with production from Premier, Showbiz, Easy Mo Bee, Klark Kent, DJ Scratch and more. Tracks include "No Diggedy", "Represent The Real" with KRS, "Microphone Master", "Hold It Down", "Bad News" with PMD, "Real Hip Hop", "40 & A Blunt", "Ready To Rock Rough Rhymes", and lots more! Delaney & Bonnie & FriendsTo Bonnie From Delaney ... LP
Atco, 1970. Very Good Gatefold ... $4.99
Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett certainly have some heavy friends here – a stunning host of guest help on the record, who make the whole thing come together with a sweet blend of southern rock and soul! The duo were always almost more of a soul act than a rock one, and that quality really shows through here – as they tear it up with help from The Memphis Horns, plus Duane Allman on slide guitar, Bobby Whitlock on organ, Charlie Freeman on guitar, and even a bit of guest help from King Curtis on tenor and Little Richard on piano! Tunes include some great originals that show why the Bramlett's were the premier roots rock act of the time – mixed with a few nicely-chosen cuts by other folks – in a lineup that includes "Lay Down My Burden", "God Knows I Love You", "Hard Luck & Troubles", "Soul Shake", "Miss Ann", "Living On The Open Road", "Free The People", "The Love Of My Man", and "Living On The Open Road". DJ CamLiquid Hip Hop ... CD
Inflamable, 2004. Used ... $3.99
A fluid set of groovy turntablism from DJ Cam! This time out Cam seems to just as eagar give to nod to some of the other titans of DJ culture as he is to move his own work forward – and it's that aristocratic method that really puts the record over. He's got the scratch-and-sample bite of primo on one track, mirrors the baroque G Funk sound on another, gets the Detroit synth groove out on another. . .get the gist? Another solid LP from one of the most relable DJ/headliners in the game! Tracks include "Premier", "Sense", "Ghetto Superstar", "Espionage" featuring Guru, "The L", "Don Dada", "Liquid Hip Hop", "Kalimba Groove", "Love Junkee" featuring Jay Dee and Cameo (it's as ill as you'd think) and "Comewithastring". Brigitte FontaineBrigitte Fontaine (1972) ... CD
Saravah (France), 1972. Used ... $11.99
A fantastic album by this enigmatic French singer – one of her first truly experimental albums! The record differs from some of her other albums quite a bit – and has a very strange mix of styles that go from straight ahead (only a track or two), to wildly experimental – very much in the best genre-breaking mode that was going on with the Saravah Records scene in the post-1968 years. Although longtime partner Areski did contribute to this album, the record also features work by Saravah labelmate Jacques Higelin, plus French jazz players like Georges Arvanitas and Philippe Mate – all of whom really help bring some fresh flavors to the record! Great stuff all 'round, and titles include "Brigitte", "Moi Aussi", "Eros", "Marcelle", "Premier Juillet", and "Le Dragon". CD

France GallPoupee De Cire Poupee De Son ... LP
Philips/Third Man, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 25.99
France Gall won the Eurovision song contest with the title track of this one – and for good reason too, given that the tune is totally groovy! The rest of the work here really follows suit – romping, jerking, and grooving in that wonderful mix of mod rhythms that made France's 60s material so great – some of the best of the French pop scene at the time, with a sound that's really a cut above on all the numbers here! Backings are by the mighty Alain Gouraguer, who brings in a hip mix of jazz inflections, rocking rhythms, and some of the more sparkling soundtrack elements bubbling in the French 60s scene – all a perfect accompaniment for Gall's catchy girl pop vocals. Titles include "Poupee De Cire Poupee De Son", written by Serge Gainsbourg – plus "Le Coeur Qui Jazze", "Le Premier Chagrin D'Amour", "On T'Avait Prevenue", "Dis A Ton Capitaine", "Nounours", "Laisse Tomber Les Filles", and "Bonne Nuit". ✨✧ Francoise HardyFrancoise Hardy (Le Premiere Bonheur Du Jour) ... CD
Vogue/Light In The Attic, 1963. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Really lovely sounds from the young Francoise Hardy – easily one of the coolest, most confident female singers in France at the time! Hardy is neither the emotive style of postwar passionate singers, nor the too-cool style of the left bank – and instead, she's got this way of mixing her own acoustic guitar with lightly lyrical arrangements that never overshadow her role in the lead – far less of the "yeh yeh" style that other singers were using, and which Hardy is too-often considered with. There's a beautifully gentle feel to the record – even though the set features some larger arrangements from Marcel Hendrix – and titles include "J'Aurais Voulu", "Nous Tous", "On Dit De Lui", "Comme Tant D'Autres", "Saurai Je", "Va Pas Prendre Un Tambour", and "Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour". Biggie's masterpiece – remastered! There's very little we could possibly say about this east coast landmark that isn't already etched in stone in the annals of hip hop history. Biggie's a master storyteller, whether he's spinning tales of violent street nihilism, his skills beneath the sheets, or blistering sadness and regret. All the classics: "Things Done Changed", "Gimme The Loot", "Machine Gun Funk", "Ready To Die", "Warning", "Ready To Die", "Juicy", "Big Poppa", "Respect", "Friend Of Mine", and the Premier-produced "Unbelievable". Beautiful stuff! Reminiscence Quartet were one of the first modern groups to mix Brazilian music and more progressive dancefloor rhythms, and they transformed the sound of mid 90s acid jazz with their great warm jazzy grooves! This new release appears to be a compilation of sorts – although some of the tracks seem to have a newly remixed quality to them, but we're not sure (liner notes always appreciated, thanks!) Whatever the case, though, the material is excellent – and the band grooves hard with lots of sweet Fender Rhodes keyboards, snapping lively Brazilians rhythms, and some great vocals by Salome De Bahia and Nancy Danino. Alice Coltrane gets a great cover feature – but the issue also features articles on the best pranks of the KLF, a look at J Dilla's Donuts, an archival Swell Maps interview from 1980, a look at Daniel Johnston's trip to New York in 1988, the Florideah Swampfest of 2019, malls across America, and lots lots more – even an article on Commerce by Luc Sante. The look and layout is beautiful – every bit as vivid as the cover! Magazine

Franco MicalizziAdolescenza Perversa (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Carosello/Spettro (Italy), 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99
The world premiere of this sweet 70s soundtrack from Franco Micalizzi – a great batch of erotic-tinged tunes originally penned for an Italian film about teenage lust! The music has a warmly gentle quality that's similar to some of Ennio Morricone's work in this mode – tunes that alternate between soft strings, stepping instrumentation, and even bits of vocals from the lovely Edda Dell'Orso, sounding a bit sweeter here than on some of her spookier soundtracks! The tunes float very nicely in the breeze – sometimes hanging bit a single piano note or two – sometimes getting a bit more drive from rhythms that verge on funky, but hang back just a bit. And as with any of the great Morricone scores from the time, there's a few key variations on the themes that spin out beautifully as the set rolls on – creating a great sense of sonic interplay! VariousComplete Stax/Volt Singles 1959 to 1968 (9CD box set) ... CD
Stax/Volt/Atlantic, 1950s. Used 9 CDs ... $43.99
This is it! A pretty darn complete document of one of the greatest soul labels of all time – put together in a wonderful box with a book on the label that's almost as great as the music on the 9CDs in the set! This one established a new standard for box sets when it was issued in 1991, and it was the first time you could really get a clear picture of the great work of Stax without spending a lifetime tracking down obscure singles. A portion of this work will be familiar to you – as it includes classic tunes by the likes of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, The Bar-Kays, Booker T & The MGs, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, William Bell, and others – but there's also a wealth of amazing soul by artists who recorded for Stax and Volt, yet never made it big on the charts, and never cut full albums for the label. Just a small amount of these folks include The Memphis Nomads, Jeanne & The Darlings, Derek Martin, Barbara & The Browns, Eddie Jefferson, The Tonettes, Macy Skipper, The Premiers, Sir Isaac & The Do-Dads, Ruby Johnson, Bobby Wilson, Eddie Purrell, Sir Mack Rice, and many others. A lifetime of listening in one box – and an essential set if you dig 60s soul! This is the nicely compact jewel case version – 9CDs in a box that's roughly 6" square. CD
(Out of print, outer box has some edgewear.)

VariousDJ Andy Smith Presents Reach Up – Disco Wonderland ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 19.98
A killer set of rare club and underground disco – filled with lots of tracks we haven't seen on other collections! Andy Smith has given us many amazing compilations over the years – sets that have a special mix magic, made up of rocksteady, reggae, vintage funk, and even some rockabilly too! Yet as Andy says here in the notes, he first got hooked on music in the disco generation – and has always had a life-long love of unusual and underground grooves – which he definitely demonstrates here, in a stunning selection of cuts that focus on the funkier side of the disco generation – with a good number of tracks that have turned out to be sample cuts over the years. Titles include "For The Love Of Money" by Disco Dub Band, "Patty Duke" by Cloud One, "Times Are Tight" by Jimmy Young, "Share The Night" by World Premiere, "Is It In" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "Let It Flow" by Tamiko Jones, "Main Thing" by Shot with Kim Marsh, "Give It Up" by Neddy Smith, "Groove To Get Down" by T-Connection, "Holding You Tight (ext DJ mix)" by Sure Thing, "First True Love Affair (Andy Smith & Nick Halke reach up edit)" by Jimmy Ross, "Got To Have You (Whiskey Barons re-edit)" by Joanne Wilson, "I Wanna Be Myself" by Don Laka, "Get Up & Boogie" by Freedom, and "Take Me To The Top" by Advance. 2CD version features all tracks unmixed on one disc, and a special mix on the other! ✨✧ VariousVintage Sounds – Rap Francais ... LP
Wagram (France), Late 90s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really cool collection, from that great moment when the French hip hop scene exploded on the world with a whole new sound and whole new style! Back in the early days of the old school, some folks thought the French language would never work for rap music – but this generation of performers and producers really proved them wrong – by working with new levels of rhythms, samples, and arrangements borrowed from the true school generation – which really opened up the possibilities in the music! Titles include "Retour Aux Pyramides" and "One One One" by X Men, "Mot Pour Mot" by Rocca, "Dans La Sono" by Beat De Boul, "Ma Face En Premiere Page" by Roce, "Crazy" by Iris Flynt Lyricson & Para One, "Grave Dans La Roche" by Sniper, "K1 Fry Invasion (rmx)" by Mafia K1 Fry, "Les Flammes Du Mal" by Passi, and "La Magie Du Tiroir" by 2 Bal 2 Neg. ✨✧ VariousFools Paradise Favorites – 50s & 60s Bop Slop & Schlock – Wigged Out Rarities From The Fool's Paradise Radio Programme ... CD
Jazzman (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from the grittiest years of the 45rpm single – music that's so mad, so strange, it really defies description! All the cuts here are presented in conjunction with the long-running Fool's Paradise radio show on WFMU – a longtime champion of all things weird and wild – always reminding us that in the glory days of vinyl, there was so much stuff set to record that really defied any sort of description – sounds that usually were quite far from the charts as well! The music here maybe has bits of R&B, early rock, jazz, and exotica – but the end results are all pretty darn unique – and often handled with both a sense of humor, and a great ear for unusual studio tricks and gimmicks. Titles include "Chinese Rock & Roll" by the Flock Rocker, "Shawnee" by The Premiers, "Charlie & The Bank Job" by Al Katraz, "Umh Uh Baby" by Kind Sid, "Knock Her Down" by The Orbits, "The Last Meal" by Hurricane Harry, "500 Pound Canary" by Jules Blattner, "The Goatee's Got To Go" by Dick Summers, "Mad" by Bobby Borda Five, "Pulp Wood Charley" by Wee Willie & The Soulettes, and "Pal Mal Rock" by Arnie Ginsberg. Premiere/Dynamite Cuts (UK), 1974. New Copy 2 x 7 inch set (pic cover, reissue)... Out Of Stock
Four fantastic sound library gems from the 70s – all directed by Yan Tregger, and featuring some mighty sweet keyboards from the legendary Jacky Giordano! "Rieka" has this cool swirling sound next to the beats and wah wah guitar – unlike anything else we can think of – while "O'Seven" is tighter, more familiar keyboard-driven funk in the rhythm – but still with this totally great guitar part that gets all freaky and fuzzy! "Old Timmy" has a very groovy vibe – riffing guitar right along with the rhythms, peppered by drums – and "Gost" is harder, funkier, and has some cool clavi that really comes on strong! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ VariousLouisville In The 60s – The Lost Allen-Martin Tapes ... LP
Out-Sider (Spain), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The sound of the Louisville scene long before the years of Squirrel Bait and Slint – a treasure trove of underground work, most of it previously unissued – all of which documents a searing scene of psych and garage experimentation! There's a tightness to these tracks that's really surprising – these are under-done outtakes, but the kinds of cuts that should have been huge regional singles – had they been issued on labels from Texas or the Pacific Northwest – the kind of local psych gems that might have made some Louisville group bigger players on the national market. The set features notes on the recordings – all of which were done at the Allen/Martin Studio, and lay on tapes that were almost thrown away when it closed – rescued from obscurity, and presented here as a huge lost legacy in sound! Titles include "Earth & Sea" by The Oxfords, "Rats In My Room" by Blues, "Just Be You" by Illusions, "Blackbird" by Company Front, "Nothing Lasts Forever" by The Premieres, "Silly Girl" by JB & The Young Wheels, "Let The Music Play" by Brothers Pride, "Open Up" by Roc, and "Drink Your Wine" by Free Reign.
