✨✧ Peter Herbolzheimer Rhythm Combination & BrassMasterpieces – The Powerhouse Sound Of The 70s ... CD
MPS (Germany), Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of funky big band work! Peter Herbolzheimer may not be a household name in the US, but in Germany, he was one of the funkiest leaders and arrangers during the 70s. His classic recordings on MPS have been a huge influence on the likes of Gilles Peterson, Monday Michiru, United Future Organization, and many other modern groovers – and he had an amazing talent for mixing together a large number of players with the tightness of a funky small combo. This set features a wide range of tracks from albums issued during the years 1972 to 1977 – just about all of which are totally rare on wax. Titles include "Corean Chick", "Neosho", "My Kind Of Sunshine", "Jive Samba", "Con Alma", "The Mixolydian Highlander", "Wheeler's Choice", and "Butterfly". 11 tracks in all – and a nice mix of funk, jazz, and grooves! ✨✧ Chester ThompsonPowerhouse ... LP
Black Jazz, 1971. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with labelmate Rudolph Johnson on tenor, blowing some beautiful lines alongside long, drawn-out Hammond solos from Thompson! The overall feel is similar to some of the great late 60s Prestige sessions – especially Don Patterson dates – with the group free swinging away in a very live format, just like you might have heard if you caught them in some hip southside club. Other players include Al Hall Jr on trombone and Ray Pounds on drums – and the album features four long jamming tracks, with titles that include "Mr T", "Trip One", "Weird Harold", and "Powerhouse". ✨✧ VariousWestbound Funk – Masterful Funk From The Detroit Powerhouse Labels Of Eastbound & Westbound ... CD
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The title's almost redundant – as the words "Westbound" and "Funk" mean virtually the same thing! From the late 60s through the mid 70s, Westbound was one of the key record labels in the sound of raw heavy funk – working with hit groups like Funkadelic and the Ohio Players to craft a sound that laid the blueprint for countless other groups of the time, and also featuring a wealth of obscurer artists with an even harder-hitting sound! The key styles of Westbound and related jazz label Eastbound were heavy and fuzzy ones – picking up off the heady and trippy styles of the late 60s Detroit scene, mixing things up with MC5 guitars, Norman Whitfield bass, and deep underground Tribe-styled jazz touches. This 20 track masterpiece is a brilliant summation of the important Westbound sound – and includes a few hits, some funky 45 classics, and an even bigger number of tracks we might not have heard otherwise! The notes are great, the tunes are super-funky, and the whole thing's one of the best funky collections you could ever hope to purchase. Titles include "You're Messing Up My Mind" by Albert Washington, "Back To Funk" by Robert Lowe, "You Caught Me Smilin" by The 19th Whole, "Conga Man" by King Errison, "Shake Your Head" by Spanky Wilson, "I Love You" by The Motivations, "I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky" by Mighty Elegant, "Crazy Legs" by Donald Austin, "Stone Thing (part 1)" by Alvin Cash, "RPM" by Boots, "Funky World (part 1)" by Silky Vincent, "Get Funky Sweet A Little Bit" by Jackie Harris & The Exciters, "I'll Bet You" by Funkadelic, and "Why Not Start All Over Again" by The Counts. Thomas BarrowCancellations (hardcover) ... Book
Powerhouse Books, 2012. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The title might seem a bit obscure, but it refers to the way that photographer Thomas Barrow worked magic on the negatives for each of these beautiful photos – images taken in the 70s and 80s in obscure spots in the west, which then bear an "X" or other mark on the negative, which then transfers to the image in the photograph! The book has large pages with sepia tone photos on each page – buildings, industrial landscapes, other offbeat spaces, all with nary a human in sight. The approach is much more like the sort of urban photographs you might see – which makes the book somewhat unique in its portrayal of the west. Book is 112 pages, hardcover, with black and white images throughout. Book

Leo GoldsteinEast Harlem – The Postwar Years (hardcover) ... Book
Powerhouse Books, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 50.00
Beautiful black and white images from the East Harlem scene of the postwar years – material shot by New York photographer Leo Goldstein to partly document the new wave of Puerto Rican immigrants in the neighborhood, as maybe one of the first efforts to establish a Nuyorican sense of identity! The images are mostly portraits, with a few candids shot in the street – and given that the book is on Powerhouse, there's a nice resonance with some of that publisher's later volumes on early hip hop and other New York street photography. All images are in black and white, and the book is hardcover, and 158 pages. Book

Powerhouse Books, 2012. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of images from Times Square, pulled from the years before Disney took over – at a time when the action moved 24 hours a day, and at a non-stop pace! Bill Butterworth was right on the streets during the early 80s – and presents stunning full color shots of a range of figures from the Deuce – strippers, short order cooks, merchants, hustlers, b boys, Guardian Angels, and others – often in posed portraits in their environs, but occasionally captured in more candid ways too. The look and feel of the photographs is great – similar to some of the Powerhouse books on old school hip hop culture – and the whole thing is hardcover, and overflowing with great shots. Book

✨✧ John CohenSpeed Bumps On A Dirty Road – When Old Time Music Met Bluegrass (hardcover) ... Book
Powerhouse Books, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The work of photographer John Cohen is always great – but it's always even better when he's working in and around the Appalachian subjects who seemed to inform some of his greatest images – especially when music was part of the setting! Here, that part of Cohen's legacy is presented in very sharp focus – in a variety of settings in a variety of spaces – from a club in Baltimore, to a coal festival in Kentucky, an auction in the country, a fiddler's convention, the recording studio, and other spots – with subjects who include Alice Gerrard & Hazel Dickens, Earl Scruggs & Lester Flatt, Cousin Emmy, Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, and other key figures who helped set the tone for bluegrass music in the postwar years – as well as a number of unnamed subjects who are maybe even more striking! The book is black and white throughout, and features notes on each section by Cohen – who illuminates these really well-captured moments. Book

Powerhouse Books, 2012. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A relatively stark book of photographs – very much what you'd expect from the title and the image on the cover – with contents inside that follow a very similar style! The book has page after page of black and white photographs of gang members from Papua New Guinea – almost all posed with their choice of weapon – usually a gun, sometimes a knife or sword – in these up-close images that almost seem to play with the concept of a police mug shot. Yet there's also no judgement in the author's presentation – and lest you think that these are nameless individuals, they are all addressed at the end of the book, with short bios on most of the subjects. Hardcover, black and white. Book

✨✧ Edward GrazdaOn The Bowery – New York City 1971 (hardcover) ... Book
Powerhouse Books, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The cover image here really sets the scene – as the book is filled with photographs of New York's Bowery in the years long before gentrification – a time when the street really lived up to its legendary reputation as a home for those down on their luck and forgotten by society! The photographs are mostly street portraits – shots of individuals or groups, mostly outdoors, but with a few barroom images as well – all presented in black and white, which seems to make the already-gritty photos even more gritty overall. There's almost no text in the book, leaving the images to do all the speaking! Book

Aaron Abernathy's a one man powerhouse here – really exploding with a focused, centered sort of energy that really illustrates his continuing development as both a singer and producer! The tracks mix some of the raspy charms of some of Aaron's earlier music with even more catchy material that really makes the whole thing shine – at a level that should maybe have Aaron finally getting some of the wider audience he deserves, even while working as a self-made artist on a label of his own! A soaring set from the later years of Detroit funk powerhouse Westbound Records – a record that has the label moving into clubbier territory, but with all the sharpness they brought to their earlier releases! Detroit producers Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey are at the helm of the record – and although the set has disco elements that include chorus vocals and upbeat rhythms, the approach is maybe more in a fast funk style than more commercial work of the time – which keeps things nice and lean throughout, at a level that's similar to early work from T Connection and some of the hipper groups of their scene! Both Motown legend Earl Van Dyke and Dennis Coffey play on the album – and tracks include "We Got Our Own Thing", "Free To Be Me", "Get A Groove In Order To Move", and "Sure Can't Go To The Moon". Sleepy John EstesLegend Of Sleepy John Estes ... LP
Delmark, 1962. Near Mint- ... $39.99
A key record in the establishment of Delmark Records as a powerhouse in blues – a session that began as something of an expedition to find the near-lost Sleepy John Estes – who was brought to the studio to record this really well-done comeback set in 1962! Although Delmark's best known with the electric sound of Chicago blues, their early work did plenty in the same rural blues modes of a label like Arhoolie – and there's a lean, stripped-down quality to the record – a very strong focus on Estes' acoustic guitar and vocals – with support from Knocky Parker on piano, Hammie Nixon on harmonica, and Ed Wilkinson on bass. Titles include "Married Woman Blues", "Rats In My Kitchen", "Drop Down Mama", "Milk Cow Blues", "Stop That Thing", and "Who's Been Telling You Buddy Brown". LP, Vinyl record album

Barry Goldberg Blues BandBlowing My Mind ... LP
Epic, 1968. Very Good+ ... $24.99 34.99
A rare electric blues-rock LP, recorded for Epic sometime in the late 60s! Organ and keyboard pounder Barry Goldberg jokingly dubbed his style "Jew Blues" – and it's really that kind of playful spirit that really kind of makes frenetic LP a minor gem, and well worth whatever effort it took to dig this out of Epic's expansive vaults. Goldberg's rough, barking vocals kind of give it strong garage rock feel, too – albeit with the rock-solid backing of session titans Charlie Musselwhite on blues harp, Chicago powerhouse Harvey Mandel and Roy Ruby on guitar, and wild Chicago drummer Maurice McKinley on the kit. Tracks include "Getting' It Down", "Mean Old World", "Twice A Man", "Big Boss Man", "Blowing My Mind", "Put Me Down", "That'll Be The Day", "Can't Stand To See You Go" and more. ✨✧ Joni HaastrupWake Up Your Mind ... LP
Afrodisia (Nigeria), 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
Funky funky solo work from Joni Haastrup – an artist who's also known for his work in Monomono, and who sounds equally great on his own! Joni's got this tight approach that wraps together Nigerian grooves of the 70s scene, and some bolder soul star energy that would be right at home in the US – a kind of powerhouse approach that really sends these tunes home beautifully! The lyrics are in English, which really helps broaden the appeal of the cuts – and the production has these cool compressed elements that are partly like the more psych-inspired modes of other Afro Funk groups, and partly those of the UK soul scene of the 70s. We've never heard a record exactly like this, and the whole thing's a truly memorable treasure from this key moment in African music. Cuts include "Watch Out", "Do The Funkro", "Greetings", "Free My People", "Wake Up Your Mind", and "Champions & Superstars". LP, Vinyl record album

IrakereIrakere ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $18.99
A landmark album from this powerhouse Cuban group of the 70s – their first record issued formally to an American market, and quite possibly their greatest effort of the decade! The sound here is a lot more focused than on the group's Cuban sessions from previous years – not commercial or slick, but free from some of the jarring shifts in styles that occurred before – and more in that sweet combination of rootsy percussion and Latin funk that made them great at their best previous moments! All players are great – and the lineup is almost a who's who of Cuban jazz at the time – with Chucho Valdes on piano and keyboards, Paquito D'Rivera on alto sax, and Arturo Sandoval on trumpet – plus guitar from Carlos Emilio Morales, percussion from Oscar Valdes, and tenor from Carlos Averhoff. The tracks were recorded live at the Montreux jazz festival – and titles include "Adagio", "Ilya", "Juana Mil Ciento", and the long "Misa Negra (The Black Mass)". LP, Vinyl record album

Jade WarriorBorne On The Solar Wind – The Vertigo Albums (Jade Warrior/Released/Last Autumn's Dream) (3CD set) ... CD
Vertigo/Esoteric (UK), Early 1970s. New Copy 3CD ... $18.99 34.99
A trio of classic albums from this legendary prog group – all brought together in a single set! First up is the self-titled Jade Warrior – the fantastic debut of a group who were one of the most unique prog acts to record for the Vertigo label in the 70s! Jade Warrior is just a trio – and unlike some of the harder-rocking power trios of the time, the group have a way of balancing softness and intensity, acoustic modes and electric ones – all with a unique style that also offers up some of the exoticism promised by their name! Yet don't worry about that last aspect – as things here are never too heavy-handed, as the group are Brit to their core – maybe balancing some of the lighter Mel Collins moments of King Crimson and the more personal Ian Anderson songs of Jethro Tull – in a line up that features percussion and flute from Jon Field, guitar from Tony Duhig, and bass and these great raspy vocals from Glyn Havard. Titles include "Masami Morning", "Windweaver", "Petunia", "Telephone Girl", "Psychiatric Sergeant", "Slow Ride", and "A Prenormal Day At Brighton". Next up is Released – the searing second album from Jade Warrior – and a record that shows the world what a mighty guitar powerhouse lurked behind their faux-Japanese aesthetics! The group's a quintet for this record – upped from the debut – and in addition to razor-sharp guitar work from Tony Duhig, there's also some great use of tenor, alto, and flute by newcomer Dave Connors – who works alongside the flute and percussion of group founder Jon Field. Allan Price adds in plenty of drums next to Field's percussion – and the vocals of Glyn Havard are even more powerful here than before – definitely matching the ferocity of his work on the bass! The whole thing's great – a hard rock masterpiece with just the right lighter touches at times, thanks to the reeds – a masterpiece by a group who never got the attention they deserved at the time – apart from hip listeners who really knew where it was at. Titles include "Water Curtain Cave", "We Have Reason To Believe", "Eyes On You", "Barazinbar", "Yellow Eyes", and "Three Horned Dragon King". On Last Autumn's Dream, Jade Warrior have a sound that's unlike anyone else of their generation – a mix of percussion, flute, bass, and guitar – all with the kind of electric/acoustic interplay such a lineup with imply! The cover image of this second album maybe looks a bit dramatic, but the group actually have a sound that's nicely understated at times – they can certainly jam with the best of their Vertigo label prog contemporaries, but they can also get a bit more personal too – and it's the balance of those modes that make a record like this such a unique treasure from the time! Titles include "A Winter's Tale", "Snake", "Morning Hymn", "May Queen", "Lady Of The Lake", "Borne On The Solar Wind", and "Dark River". All albums with original artwork – in a box with a great booklet of notes! CD

An early gem from the Kashmere Stage Band – and a record that already has the ensemble burning with plenty of fire! These guys were a one-unit powerhouse in American grooves – one of the few US groups who really got the same sort of funky big band energy that all the better European combos were hitting – like the hip groups who recorded for MPS around the same time! But Kashmere are even more soulful, and even more down to earth – young players working under the direction of Conrad Johnson, who really brings out the best in their performance, and has no trouble throwing a lot of soul and funk into the mix as well! An excellent collection of rare work from the legendary BB King – a selection of 25 tracks from the vaults of RPM and Kent Records, 23 of which appear here for the first time ever! Some cuts are alternates, some are different versions of other recordings – and all are pretty darn wonderful – that sharp-edged BB King sound right at the start, before the famous Memphis powerhouse was recording for bigger labels in a more commercial setting! Lots of these cuts have a jazzy backing alongside BB's sweet guitar and raspy vocals – a mode that's similar to the mix of bigger band and bluesy elements you'd get on early work from Bobby Blue Bland – that great Memphis mix of modes that always makes us love this stretch in King's career so much. That's the young Eddie Quinteros on the cover – already a powerhouse during his teen years, and one of the hottest things going on the Bay Area scene of the time! Eddie's got this raw, rocking style that borrows a bit from the guitar-driven work of Chuck Berry, but also resonates with some of the fresher changes taking place down the coast in Cali – and his role as a Chicano rocker is often overlooked, even though work like this equally matches the strength of some of his contemporaries in LA! The set features a few rare singles for the Brent label, and lots of other rare an unissued material too – work with the Rockin Aristocrats and Rockateers, and even some very cool mid 60s cuts with the Au Go Go's! Sun RaHeliocentric Worlds Of Sun Ra Vol 1 ... CD
ESP (Germany), 1965. Used ... $6.99
A seminal set from Sun Ra – even if it's one of his few 60s albums not on the Saturn label! The set was done for ESP during the glory days of that avant powerhouse – a perfect match, given the Arkestra's relocation to New York, and the label's ability to reach out to big new audiences for exciting music – a fact that certainly made this album one of the most widely-circulated Ra albums for many years to come. The group here works in formation that holds up strongly with the Saturn sides – John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto, Teddy Nance on trombone, Chris Capers on trumpet, Danny Davis on flute and alto, and Ra on piano, bass marimba, and some especially nice electronic celeste! Things get quite out at points – freer almost than other Arkestra sides of the time – and titles include "Outer Nothingness", "Other Worlds", "Nebulae", "Dancing In the Sun", "The Cosmos", and "Of Heavenly Things". An excellent lost classic from Detroit soul jazz powerhouse Phil Ranelin – now a legendary figure, but recording here back at the start of his career in the Motor City! Trombonist Ranelin was one of the key figures in the city's Tribe Records scene – and this album is one of the greatest that the label ever issued – a perfect blend of the spiritual currents that were bubbling under in the scene, and some of the funky touches that helped make Ranelin and the label legendary over the years. The set features Ranelin on trombone, Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, Kenny Cox on electric piano, and Harold McKinney on piano – plus other luminaries from the incredibly strong Detroit scene of the time – and titles include the funky classic "Sounds From The Village", the slow spacey breakbeat number "Vibes From The Tribe", and the jazzy groover "For The Children". Also includes "He The One We All Knew", an extended piece that features members of The Griot Galaxy that takes up all of side two! This reissue features 3 bonus tracks "Vibes From The Tribe (extended)", "Vibes From The Tribe (8 track)", and "Sounds From The Village (extended)". CD

Everything from the previous years is still nicely intact – but the band are definitely on the way towards that Stones sound that made them very distinct from other blues-inspired UK acts of their generation – heard here in a mix of classic singles and overlooked LP tracks – more material than the US version! Columbia, Late 30s. Used ... $2.99
A wonderful batch of instrumentals from the legendary Raymond Scott – and a set that features some of Scott's most wonderful compositions ever! These numbers all date from the 30s, and were originally released as 78s on the Master Records label – but this later Columbia package really brings the sounds together wonderfully, and gives Scott a long-overdue showcase as one of the budding modernists of the pre-war years – a composer who could match swing and whimsy, exoticism and jazz, playfulness and poise – all without every losing his beat! The instrumental is wonderful, the arrangements inventive, and the whole thing's got the same sort of audio appeal as an old Warner Brothers cartoon. We're not normally ones to stock urban fire books here at Dusty Groove – but as you probably know, our hometown is Chicago, a city with a pretty incredible history – part of which is a fantastic fire that burned the whole place to the ground back in the 19th century! This huge book dives into great detail about the fire – its origins, its too-long burnout, initial failed efforts to stop it, and the surprisingly quick rise from the ashes that Chicago experienced as a result – as the city turned the tragedy into a way of rethinking and modernizing itself, which made it very well-poised to become a global powerhouse in years to come! Carl Smith tells the tale with a nicely narrative voice, while also showcasing the long research that went into the project – and this hardcover edition is 374 pages, with some black and white images. Decca/7T's (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99 30.99
A big set of work from a group who are known for one big global hit – a track that everyone knows, but never can remember who did it – and a band that has a heck of a lot more to offer than you might expect! First up is the group's self titled album, White Plains – a power pop powerhouse by a group who will forever be remembered for the classic title track to this set, but who also manage to deliver the goods all the way through! The whole album's a stunning showcase for the work of Roger Greenaway and Roger Cook – producers and co-writers of some of the album's best tunes – which have a jaunty, catchy vibe that really prefaces 70s AM radio, and does a great job of building a bridge forward from earlier 60s pop styles. Some of the themes are deeper, but others are lighter – and the production has this way of fusing everything together in this monstrous wall of sound, but without ever sounding as slick as mainstream pop might a few years later. Titles include the classic "My Baby Loves Lovin", plus "In A Moment Of Madness", "You've Got Your Troubles", "Today I Killed A Man I Didn't Know", "Sunny Honey Girl", "When Tomorrow Comes Tomorrow", and "Young Birds Fly". Next is the album When You Are A King – a set that's almost ever bit as great, with an equally well-crafted approach to pop – on titles that include "Julie Do Ya Love Me", "Home Loving Man", "When You Are A King", "An Eye For The Main Chance", "The World Gets Better With Love", "Noises In My Head", and "I'll Go Blind". CD3 features rare tracks by related groups Crucible and Zenith, plus more bonus tracks – and in total, the set features 22 non-LP tracks – titles that include "A Simple Man", "Look To See", "I Can't Stop", "I Need Your Everlasting Love", "Gonna Miss Her Mississippi", "Wanna Fall In Love", "Plains", "A Fool That Was In Love", "Dance With You", and "Silent Words". The music here all comes from the Gospel Roots label of Miami soul powerhouse TK Records – a key force in mainstream soul in the 70s, but also a company who issued some excellent spiritual material at the time! The work here isn't rootsy gospel – and instead reflects all the hip, righteous changes that were coming into the music during the 70s – bits of blacksploitation funk in the rhythms, powerful lead singers upfront, and an impeccable production style that often mixed deep soul vocals with modern soul presentation. Sounds Of Memphis/Ace (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The later years of the Sound Of Memphis studio – cuts from a time when the legendary deep soul powerhouse was trying on some of the newer modes from the end of the 70s! The work here is a real lost slice of Memphis soul – music from a time when the heyday of Stax and Hi Records had long passed, but smaller indies like SOM were going strong – and able to capture the shifting sound in the great soul city – as singers worked in the sorts of funky club and boogie modes you'd more regularly associate with New York or Chicago! The quality level is surprisingly great – especially since there's a nicely indie vibe to these cuts – not polished disco rehash, but the sort of underground club material that we've always loved from reissues on labels like Numero or Soul Cal – coming here from the surprising source of Memphis. Even more importantly, almost all this material never saw the light of day at the time – since the SOM connections to bigger labels had faded – so the whole thing's like a time capsule, taking you back to some real under-exposed days on the Memphis scene! Titles include "Dream Girl" and "Groove With A Feeling" by Freedom Express, "You Can Bet I Can Get You Yet" and "What You Do For Love" by Lee Moore, "Ridin" and "Attraction" by Erma Shaw, "Cold Blooded Sally" by Fran Farley, "New Lang Syne" by Kannon, "I'll Be Around" by The Jacksonians, "Gone" by Vision, "We Need Love" by Donald O'Connor, "Tighter Tighter" by Demetrius & Takelia, and "Don't Fight It" by Louis Williams. Titles include "Groove To Get Down" by T-Connection, "Dedicate All My Love" by Raw Soul Express, "Sweet Thang" by The 13th Floor, "Living Together Is Keeping Us Apart" by Clarence Reid, "Good Good Lovin" by Charles Johnson, "To Touch You Again/Lady Blue" by John Tropea, "Givin Me Your Love" by Facts Of Life, "Dance With Me" by Peter Brown, "Why Can't We Live Together" by Timmy Thomas, and both versions of "90% Of Me Is You" – one by Gwen McCrae, one by Vanessa Kendrick. Also features some J Rocc mixes – "I Get Lifted (J Rocc edit)" by George McCrae, "Keep It Up (J Rocc edit)" by Milton Wright, "I Love The Way You Love (J Rocc dub)" by Betty Wright, and "Clean Up Woman (J Rocc edit)" by Betty Wright. Stax/BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A mountain of funk from one of the greatest soul labels of all time! Stax is known round the world over for their soulful work – by singers like Otis Redding or Carla Thomas, and instrumental tunes by Booker T & The MGs – but the label was also quite a funky powerhouse – especially as the 60s drew to a close, and the management of the company got a lot hipper, and a heck of a lot more musically open-minded! This killer batch of tracks features 21 numbers from those days – including many obscure and funky tunes that only ever came out on singles, or which were recorded by artists that never made it as big as Stax stars from earlier years. The result of all that obscurity is an extremely fresh selection of tracks – plenty of down-n-dirty funky 45 numbers, played by hip Memphis combos, and featuring some really deep soul vocals. Titles include "Dark Skin Woman" by Sir Mack Rice, "Ain't No Sin" by John Kasandra, "Bump & Boogie" by The Wrecking Crew, "Shame On The Family Name" by Calvin Scott, "Cool Strut" by Bernie Hayes, "Bump Mean" by Sir Mack Rice, "Soul Machine" by Reggie Milner, "How Can You Mistreat The One You Love" by Katie Love, "Cold Blooded" by The Bar Kays, "Do The Side Saddle" by Rufus Thomas, "Stay Away From That Monkey" by Jimmy McCracklin, "Them Hot Pants" by Lee Sain, "Devil In A Man" by Stu Gardner, "Circuits Overloaded" by Inez Foxx, "From Toys To Boys" by The Emotions, "Got It Together (parts 1 & 2)" by Rudy Robinson & The Hungry Five, and "Crosscut Saw" by Albert King. Studio One (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $15.99 22.29
This might be the first time we've ever heard the phrase "Music Lab" attached to the legendary Kingston powerhouse Studio One – but the name definitely fits, as they company was always a hotbed of new musical experimentation! And while some of the company's most famous contributions came in the late 60s and early 70s, this set looks at some even more experimental years farther on in the 70s – with currents of dub and the new sort of spirituality that was flowing through the Jamaican scene – served up here not in too-familiar roots reggae modes, but instead a whole host of really interesting, really different styles! The work still holds strongly in the Studio One tradition, and a number of the artists are ones you'll know from older, straighter recordings – but the set is also a really illuminating look at these sometimes overlooked years. Titles "People Make The World Go Round (version)" by Hortense & The Sound Dimension, "Far Beyond (version)" by Leroy Wallace & The New Establishment, "Go For Yourself" by Lennie Hibbert, "Summertime" by Roy Richards, "Tenor Man Trip" by Roland Alphonso, "Glory To Sound" by Cedric Im Brooks, "Dread Head" by Pablov Black, "Forward To Jah (part 2)" by The Jay Tees & Brentford Rockers, "World Is A Ghetto" by Brentford All Stars, "Chainey Roots" by Dub Specialist, and "Sunshine Of Your Love" by Jackie Mittoo. Stax/Craft, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $26.99
An incredible addition to the rich legacy of Stax Records – a collection of rare tracks, almost all of which appear here for the first time ever – a set that represents recordings done by all the great songwriters who were working for Stax at the time, most of whom were also recording artists on the label! Given that fact, these aren't scratchy recordings performed by hacks who can't sing – as almost all the material features the sort of top-shelf vocalists who made Stax such a deep soul powerhouse in the 60s and 70s – represented here in a style that shows just how much freedom of creative expression the label allowed its best – very different than the way some of the bigger companies would just cram a song down a quickly-booked session in the studio! Plus, these demo tracks are done in a variety of modes – some with very stripped-down instrumentation, some with fuller groups – and together, they offer a key look at the creative process at Stax – one that's very different than the iconic sound of productions in their Memphis studio, and which really shows an even deeper range of expression through the variety of approaches. This LP version features tracks that later became hits in the finished versions – titles that include "A Woman's Love" by Carla Thomas, "634-5789" by Eddie Floyd, "If Loving You Is Wrong" by Homer Banks, "I Got To Be Myself" by Carl Smith, "I'll Be Your Shelter" by Homer Banks, "I've Got No Time To Lose" by Deanie Parker, "I'll Be The Other Woman" by Shelbra Bennett, "Respect Yourself" by Mack Rice, "Woman To Woman" by Henderson Thigpen, and "We Can Love" by Eddie Floyd. An oft-overlooked gem from Parliament – released during the year 1976, and sometimes hidden between monster LPs like Funkentelechy and Mothership Connection – but every bit as great as those two classics! The album's got that tightened-up P-Funk sound that was working so perfectly at the time – still with all the fuzzy haired elements of earlier years, but presented with a bit more focus – and a powerhouse swing that really drives the tracks home with a funky groove on the bottom! There's a flowing sort of energy here that almost makes you think that the whole thing just emerged naturally from the brain of George Clinton – but all ensemble players have a strong hand in the action, and really get some great moments in on the set. Cuts include "Gamin' On Ya", "Do That Stuff", "Children Of Production", and "I've Been Watching You (Move Your Sexy Body)". CD

Ezz-Thetics (Switzerland), 1965. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of great Sun Ra albums – back to back in a single set! First up is Heliocentric Worlds Vol 1 – seminal set from Sun Ra, even if it's one of his few 60s albums not on the Saturn label! Heliocentric 2 is the second set of Heliocentric tracks that Ra recorded for ESP, with a freer feel than the first volume, and a bit more avant-oriented work overall. Ra and the group play a lot of percussion – and Ra himself is on tuned bongos, piano, and clavioline, which has a very nice spooky sound! The reed work on the album is by Robert Cummings, John Gilmore, Pat Patrick, and Marshall Allen – with bass by Ronnie Boykin and percussion by Roger Blank. Tracks include "Cosmic Chaos", "House of Beauty", and "The Sun Myth". CD

Rare rockabilly tracks from a relatively unusual source – LA's Modern Records label, an imprint that's best known as a powerhouse of postwar blues and R&B! A long-overdue look at the rich soul legacy of RCA Records in the 60s – a label that may well be known for its big pop hits, or its achievements in Nashville – but also a surprising powerhouse of of upbeat, uptempo soul when it came to their singles! For some special reason, RCA really seemed to allow a hell of a lot of creative freedom in the soul department – unlike their country, which was often very strictly controlled in terms of production – and the result is a huge amount of extremely creative, extremely groovy, and pretty damn soulful tracks that come together beautifully on this set! Many singles were pressed in small numbers, and hardly ever circulated or promoted at the time – which means that the whole thing definitely lives up to the "rare collectable" in the title – and the set also features some tracks that appear here for the first time ever! Titles on this first volume include "Ooh It Hurts Me" by The Cavaliers, "Change Your Ways" by Willie Kendrick, "Take Me Away" by Carolyn Cooke, "Today Is My Day" by Dean Courtney, "I'm Just A Man" by The Insiders, "Having Fun" by The Bobbettes, "Push A Little Bit Harder" by The Metros, "It Didn't Take Much To Fall In Love" by Percy Wiggins, "I'll Never Forget You" by The Metros, "Love Sick" by The Dynamics, and "Mend The Torn Pieces Of My Heart" by Lorraine Chandler. Allan Price adds in plenty of drums next to Field's percussion – and the vocals of Glyn Havard are even more powerful here than before – definitely matching the ferocity of his work on the bass! Wow, here's a group with a heck of a fitting name – and man, we KNEW we recognized that voice – it's Mama Lion, fronted by Lynn Casey, who provided the singing voice for the Kelly McNamara character in Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls! Preserve Wildlife is a crazy good rock album with densely grooving soul & funk influences, but it's really a showcase for Lynn's powerhouse vocals. She gets much more down and dirty, wailing away on these tunes in a manner that's waaaaaay more feral than it was on Stu Phillip's compositions for the classic Russ Meyer sleazefest. The group plays so hard, that if the piano and keys weren't so prominent in the mix it'd be closer to a hard rock sound. These guys are definitely a funk band, but one with an equal love of psychedelic freakbeat tunes as well – served up nicely on cuts that include "Guten Morgen", "Boo Hoo Boogaloo", "Charlie Loves Gracia", "Pterodactyl", "Dora's Sangria", "Wacky", "Say No More", and "Yer Fibers". Tribe/Now Again, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
MPS (Japan), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
An essential bit of piano jazz from MPS – and one of the rarest sides on their Saba label from the 60s! German keyboardist Dieter Reith plays with a cracklin' trio that includes Peter Witte on bass, and powerhouse Charly Antolini on drums. The tracks are a mix of originals and jazz standards, and they're all played with a light lively approach, and the trademark piano jazz groove that's made some of these MPS albums favorites on the international groove scene. Some of the best tracks are Deiter's "Happy Afternoon" and "How About A Blues", which both have a nice breezy groove to them, but the record also has nice versions of "Green Dolphin Street", "Wives & Lovers", and "Days Of Wine And Roses". Magic Touch/Funky Delicacies, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully done look at the music of Harvey Scales – a damn funky cat from the Milwaukee scene, finally getting his due! The package is overflowing with groovers – hard funky 45 cuts that Scales recorded for the Magic Touch label – mostly in the late 60s and start of the 70s – wrapped up here in a lavish booklet that's filled with well-researched notes, and vintage photos – a set that really sets a whole new standard for the Tuff City label! Scales' groove is one that we've always loved on 45 – a dancefloor-directed version of soul that falls somewhere in a space between Archie Bell & The Drells and Dyke & The Blazers – but with a heavier sound overall. Yet having all these cuts together in one place seems to give them even more intensity than before – a powerhouse package of 20 rare tracks that run the gamut from upbeat soul to heavy funk to a few early disco numbers as well. Titles include "Love-It is", "Broadway Freeze", "Get Down", "The Yolk", "The Funky Yolk", "Get Down 1970", "Funky Football", "Trying To Survive", "Bump Your Thang", "Groove On Sexy Lady", "Rock The World", "Welcome Home", "The Sound Of Soul", "Too Good To Be True", and "Love Is A Gas". Way more than just the gospel you might expect from the title – given that the music here comes from the Jewel Records label, a real powerhouse for southern soul and blues! The style here is plenty secular overall – with lots of the best deep soul overtones we've come to expect from Jewel in the late 60s and early 70s – including that relaxed sort of production approach that makes the label's music way different than that of any of their southern contemporaries on the scene. The tunes are definitely spiritual, but carried off in a way that's very appealing to any fan of southern soul at the time – and the double-length set features a massive 36 gospel gems from Jewel that include "You Better Get Right" by Willie Morganfield, "I'm Traveling On" by The Soul Stirrers, "Solid Rock" by The Violinaires, "Little Boy" by Ted Taylor, "He Changed" by Albertina Walker & The Caravans, "All The Way" by The Violinaires, "Confusing Times" by Clarence Fountain, "A Change Is Gonna Come" by The Meditation Singers, and "There's A Creator" by Roscoe Robinson. Stax/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Stax Records turned out plenty of hits in the 60s – but the Memphis label was also a non-stop powerhouse of recording, and cut countless sides that were every bit as great as their hits, but never fully got their due! This collection brings together a huge amount of those gems – 24 rare Stax singles, none of which have ever been reissued – which makes this package a treasure trove of under-discovered Memphis soul, even if you've got some other Stax/Volt sets in your collection! A number of these tracks are early numbers by artists who'd break bigger on Stax later in the 60s – and others are by singers you might not know at all, but who were key to helping the label form its sound at the time – as their top-shelf team of writers and studio talents made these obscure singles every bit as great as their work for bigger artists. Titles include "I Need Somebody" by Johnny Daye, "Separation" by Carla Thomas, "Under My Nose" by Eddie Floyd, "Here I Am" by Lynda Lyndell, "Bashful Guitar" by Johnny Jenkins, "I Gotta Have My Baby's Love" by Sir Mack Rice, "Sweet Thing" by Gorgeous George, "The Big Dipper" by Sir Issac & The Do Dads, "Uh Oh I'm In Love Again" by Eddie Jefferson, "Beach Bash" by The Mar-Kays, "You Belong To Her" by Barbara & The Browns, "Strange Things" by Johnny Taylor, and "This Kind Of Woman" by Ivory Joe Hunter. Kent (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Titles on this second volume include "Dance Little Girl" by The Cavaliers, "Love Is So Wonderful" by Dean Courtney, "Movin' Too Slow" by The Exciters, "You Only Live Twice" by Lorraine Chandler, "My Imagination" by The Metros, "Can't Let You Go" by The Geminis, "American Dollar" by Willie Kendrick, and lots lots more. A treasure trove of lost soul music – music from the mighty Minit Records, a late 60s powerhouse that bridged the New Orleans and LA soul scenes! The set's an instant treasure – as it brings together two dozen lost singles on Minit – a label who was more concerned with cutting strong hard soul records than getting chart placement, and who really came up with some great material at the time! The sound is kind of a looser take on the New Orleans sound – with loads of great southern soul production, and some killer vocals on just about every number. There's a lot of work here by artists went onto record for later labels – but who really sound at their best on the set – and titles include "Shing A Ling" by Clydie King, "Sookie Sookie" by Tina Britt, "Somebody Special" by Bobby Womack, "Hunk Of Funk" by Gene Dozier & The Brotherhood, "Testify" by Memphis Soul Band, "Yesterday Died" by Jimmy Holiday, "I Know" by Gloria Jones, and "Get Right" by The Players. The sound is surprisingly rootsy on a few numbers – and warmly jazzy on others – and Patti's still got all the polish she picked up from her years with Quincy Jones, but she's also stepping out a bit more as an artist with a stronger emotional palette. Austin works with some great original material that includes the tracks "(Ooh-Wee) He's Killing Me" and "I Can't Stop" – as well as surprising covers, like Squeeze's "Another Nail From My Heart", Isaac Hayes' "Body Language", and Bob Seeger's "We've Got Tonight".
