VariousBrazilian Explosion ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 1996. Used ... $5.99
One of the first-ever Brazilian remix projects – pioneered back in the mid 90s by the Mr Bongo posse – already steeped in Brazilian grooves from years of great reissues and retail! For the set, the Bongo crew enlisted the aid of talents that include Faze Action, Ballistic Brothers, Fila Brazilian, and Boxsaga – all to remix 11 Batucada tracks performed by the group Arakatuba. The sound is a brilliant update of Brazilian percussion traditions, and shows the keen energy of the London scene to attempt to merge older styles into a new dancefloor groove. Cuts include "Pele", "Dunga", "Zico", and "Junior". CD

VariousBubblerock Is Here To Stay – The British Pop Explosion 1970 to 1973 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A fantastic collection of work from the UK scene at the start of the 70s – a treasure trove of pop cuts from the time, most of which never made it across the Atlantic to our neck of the woods – and which represent a whole different world of music than you'd know from the classic rock and prog albums that usually represent the period! Instead, these are cuts that were cooked up in the studio in search of a hit – some by names that worked strongly in the 60s, others by new groups – some of whom only existed as a name on a label – but all in search of fresh sounds, groovy lyrics, and a way of putting over a tune that spoke volumes about the studio changes and advances taking place around the UK scene at the time! A number of cuts here have production that might be vaguely in glam territory, while others change up the way that vocals and guitars work together, and others evolve past Brit pop modes of the 60s – embracing psych or hard rock elements, but in a subtle way. As with other Cherry Red/Grapefruit collections of this nature, the whole thing is a stunning journey through music that we'd never have heard otherwise, and never in this much detail – presented with a big booklet of notes on all the crazy cats within – to support 85 tracks by artists who include Paintbox, Simon Turner, Mr Bloe, The Weathermen, Fumble, Posse, Gingerbread, Majority One, Jonathan King, Marmalade, Clifford T Ward, Stud Leather, Paul Gabriel, Autumn, St Cecelia, Rick Price, The Piglets, Kincade, Sweet, The Sad, Gumm, The Angelette, Grumble, Jungle Jim, Shag, Bubblerock, Harmony Grass, Terry Dactyl & The Dinosaurs, Stardust, Bill Fay, Pete Dello, Buggy, David Essex, Peter Kellern, Fickle Pickle, Touchwood, and many others! VariousFuture Sounds Of Jazz Vol 9 ... CD
Compost (Germany), 2003. Used ... $4.99
If this is the future, lead us to the moving sidewalks! This 9th volume in Compost Records' now-legendary series is easily the best we've heard to date – and it really shows the tremendous growth from the Compost posse over the past few years, stretching from its initial roots in abstract and electronic grooves, into a much more deeply soulful world of music, one that's got equal parts real jazz instrumentation and thoughtful lead vocals – making for a much stronger body of work overall! This compilation includes a number of previously unreleased and exclusive tracks – next to a few recent singles on Compost and other labels – and titles include "Anywhere Anyone" by Dntel, "Moa" by Yellowtail, "Along" by Alexander Kowalski, "Venue" by Julius Kammerl, "Folk Song For Cello" by Savath & Savalas, "Juice" by Season with Ernesto, "Leave Me Now" by Stateless featuring Bless, "Futuristica (Grand Unify vox rmx)" by Joseph Malik, and "Something To Get Excited About" by Triplane. ✨✧ VariousEccentric Soul – The Bandit Label ... CD
Numero, Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible peek into a near-lost chapter of Chicago soul – the tiny Bandit label, home to The Majestic Arrows, one of the greatest indie harmony groups of the midwest in the 70s – plus a few other excellent soul artists! As with the other Eccentric Soul volume from Numero, this one offers far more than just an assortment of rare singles – and instead really digs deep to tell the true story of this tiny indie soul label. The music alone is totally great – as the set features a wealth of harmony soul tracks by The Majestic Arrows, plus other funk and soul tracks by Johnny Davis, Altyrone Deno Brown, and Linda Balintine – but the package is equally noteworthy – filled with the storied details of the unusual and exotic practices and lifestyles of the Bandit Records posse. The set features 17 full tracks – including "One More Time Around", "Another Day", "Doing It For Us", "Love Is All I Need", "Going To Make A Time Machine", "We Love Together", "The Magic Of Your Love", and "I'll Never Cry For Another Boy" by The Majestic Arrows; "We Have Love" and "Bring Back The One I Love" by The Arrows; "If You Love Me" and "Sweet Pea" by Altyrone Deno Brown; "You're A Habit Hard To Break" and "Glad About That" by Linda Balintine; and "You've Got To Crawl To Me" and "Boogedy Boogedy" by Johnny Davis. Plus, the set also features 3 rehearsal takes of tunes by the Majestic Arrows! CD

Spring/BGP (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great slice of work from the New York underground of the post-disco years – served up by a family of labels that had been making things happen through most of the 70s! The set focuses strongly on the singles issued by the Posse and Spring Records labels – the former a new offshoot of the latter, especially geared towards 12" singles that were strongly focused on both the new sounds of the clubs and the streets – including lots of electro, bass-heavy funk, hip hop-inspired grooves, and mabye even some elements that would soon point the way towards house music to come! This side of the Spring Records label has never been covered in detail like this before – and the choice of cuts is as great as the notes on the music – which finally gives the Posse singles their due in the scene from back in the day. Titles include "We Come To Jam" by Blaze, "Sing A Song" by Lonnie Youngblood, "Have Your Cake" by Body, "Wired For Games (long version)" by C Brand, "Workin Out" by Ritz, "Live It Up (short vocal)" by Fonda Rae, "Get Up An Dance" by Mynk, "Spread Love" by Fatback, "Let's Get Nice (7" vocal)" by Glory, and "Got To Have Your Lovin (short vocal)" by Feel. ✨✧ VariousTexas Funk – Hard Texas Funk 1968 to 1975 (US version) ... CD
Jazzman/Now Again, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This is the kind of funk they've been hiding from you all these years – the real deal, the heavy stuff, the type of work that's made driving around the country looking for rare 45s so worthwhile! This material's the kind that makes a trip like that happen – super-rare funk from Texas, dug up by the Jazzman posse, and given the stamp of approval by DJ Shadow! The package is a perfect introduction to the lost heritage of Texas funky work – as it not only includes 21 searing tracks of funk (some of the best we've heard compiled in a long time!), but it also features a breakdown of the different scenes in the state, and a full set of notes on each tune, complete with an image of the original 45! The whole thing's unbelievable – as well researched as it is hard and funky, and a delight to the ears throughout. Titles include "Give Everybody Some" by Mickey & The Soul Generation, "Sissy Strut" by Joe Bravo, "Soul Pot" by The Soul Ones, "Every Man For Himself" by The Road Runners, "Super Funk" by Vern Blair Debate, "Soul Pride" by Little Joe & The Latinaires, "I Turn You On" by Latin Breed, "Funky Stuff" by Little Jr Jesse & His Teardrops & The Tears, "Funky Chick" by The Majestics, and "Do Your Thing (parts 1 & 2)" by Zapata. A fantastic collection of work from a real golden age in hip hop – a period that you'll probably guess from the image of the Native Tongues posse on the front – served up here in a compilation that brings together classics from De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, and many others! As usual with Ace, the liner notes and other details are great – making this way more than just a slap-dash mix of hits – and titles include "You're Not Coming Home (Mase's funkay recall mix)" by Groove Garden, "Age Ain't Nothin But A #" by Chi Ali, "Bonita Applebum" by Tribe Called Quest, "Sunshine Men" by Freestyle Fellowship, "Peachfuzz" by KMD, "K Sera Sera" by Justin Warfield, "It's A Shame" by Monie Love, "Doin Our Own Dang" by Jungle Brothers, "OPP" by Naughty By Nature, "Doowutchyalike" by Digital Underground, "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays" by De La Soul, "The Choice Is Yours" by Black Sheep, "All For One" by Brand Nubian, "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" by Dream Warriors, "Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children" by Queen Latifah with De La Soul, "Where I'm From" by Digable Planets, and "We Run Things (It's Like Dat)" by Da Bush Babees. Fantastic sounds from Stereolab – an assortment of rare singles and other unusual recordings that were mostly issued on their own Duophonic label, and which are far more obscure than their bigger label albums during the same period! Even though Stereolab gave the world some undeniable classics in the late 90s and early 00s, they were also working endlessly, and seemed to record more than they could ever fit on a full length set – which resulted in all the cool singles, limited releases, and other material included here – not dusty tapes pulled from the archives, but beautiful work that often returns the group to all the space age charms of their first few records! The package is huge – 25 tracks in all, of varying length – and titles include "Barok Plastik", "Calimero", "Fried Monkey Eggs (voc)", "Solar Throw Away", "Variation One", "Monkey Jelly", "Explosante Fixe", "Jump Drive Shut Out", "The Super-It", "L'Exotisme Interieur", "Pandora's Box Of Worms", "Retrograde Mirror Form", "Nomus E Phusis", "I Feel The Air Of Another Planet", "Outer Bongolia", and "Intervals". ✨✧ Andrzej KorzynskiPossession ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski – penned for a legendary horror film from the early 80s! The movie goes way beyond typical grit and gore – with a surreal bent that's made it the stuff of much discussion over the years – and Korzynski's music definitely lives up to the spirit of the images on the screen – mixing 80s electronics with offbeat strings, odd percussion, and other compelling bits – often used in very short songs that shift often throughout the course of the album – easily making the record one of the most playful we've ever heard from Finders Keepers – yet also one of the darkest too! A few sweet keyboard melodies offset some of the spookiness in a nice way – and titles include "Helen Has Green Eyes", "Opetanie 1", "The Night The Screaming Stops", "Blue Ford B AZ6", "Heinrick's Demise", "Mark Looks In The Fridge", "What Is It", and "Closely Observed Anna". Ruby AndrewsEverybody Saw You ... CD
Zodiac/Everland (Austria), 1970. New Copy ... $14.99
One of the greatest female soul records ever to come from Chicago – a killer set of work from the legendary Ruby Andrews! Ruby's a hell of a talent that should have been huge at a national level – possessed with a deep soul style that matched the best from Betty Lavette or Mavis Staples, but often set up in more sophisticated arrangements too – in a mode that worked perfectly in a "double-edged sword" model that was often employed by other Chicago singers, like Barbara Acklin or Patty Drew. The album was issued as a follow-up to Ruby's massive cut "Casanova", which is a perfect example of this style – with Ruby's raw vocals over the top, some loping string arrangements underneath, and the whole thing working perfectly together in an amazing blend of styles! The whole album's incredibly strong, and other tracks include "Casanova 70", "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", "Tit For Tat", and "Can You Get Away". CD

Bob DoroughMultiplication Rock ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $13.99
Sure, it was silly stuff when we were kids – but once De La Soul sampled "Three Is The Magic Number", this record became one of the most prized in our possession! And thanks to that hip hop reintroduction, we've really fallen in love with the music again over the years – partly because the tunes are all so groovy, and partly because we've really come to know the jazz-based work of composer Bob Dorough! At the time of this set, Dorough was coming off some great work in the 60s – his own rare recordings, music for Spanky & Our Gang, and others – all of which seems to inform these math-based tunes written for Saturday morning TV. The tunes are all pretty darn catchy, and often quite jazzy – and instrumentation often features some great electric piano nestled in alongside the vocals. Dorough sings the lion's share of the work for this album – although Grady Tate sings on two numbers, and Blossom Dearie on one more. Titles include the amazing "Three Is A Magic Number" – plus "Lucky Seven Sampson", "Little Twelve Toes", "Ready Or Not Here I Come", "I Got Six", "Naughty Number Nine", "Figure Eight", and "The Four Legged Zoo". The obscure second album from LAX – even better than the first Prelude set by this west coast disco project, and with a slightly different spin as well! There's no female vocals this time around – and the lyrics are sung by Geoff Leib, who's also the keyboardist – which makes for a nice blue-eyed soul approach that dovetails nicely with the jazzier currents in the music – almost AOR, but more soaringly soulful overall! The tracks are long, and there's plenty of focus on the instrumentation – especially the way the rhythms build up – on tracks that include "Thanks But No Thanks", "Like A Simple Song Of Love", "Love Me Tonight", "Fight Back", "Possessed", and "All My Love". CD features bonus tracks – "All My Love (7" version)" and "Thanks But No Thanks (7" version)". CD

Record Culture, 2020. New Copy ... $20.99 24.00
A great issue of this really cool publication – a book-styled journal that's filled with text and photos testifying a real love of records! The format is a bit like the Dust & Grooves book from years back – in that the magazine features interviews with folks amidst their records – but the scope is also wider, too – as the contents offer up conversations with creative people, and the way that the records influence their own work. There's loads of full color photos throughout – photos of record collections, the people who own them, and other related material – and this issue features connections and conversations with Sadar Bahar, Louise Chen, John Gomez, Apiento, Regularfantasy, Lauer, Beatrice Dillon, Public Possession, River Yarra, Anthony Naples and others. 227 pages – full color throughout! ✨✧ Paul RutherfordGentle Harm Of The Bourgeoisie ... LP
Emanem, 1975. Near Mint- ... $29.99
One of the few solo albums ever cut by trombonist Paul Rutherford – an important talent on the British jazz scene of the 70s, and every bit as creative a player on his instrument as Albert Mangelsdorff or George Lewis! Like those players, Rutherford has a freely inventive quality that unlocks unexplored sounds in the trombone – but not in a way that's gimmicky or showy, which would be easy on the instrument – and instead possessed with a gentle soul and really coherent vision – heard wonderfully here in a spare solo setting, which gives Paul a lot more exposure than some of the larger group recordings in which he was a key participant in the earlier part of the decade. Titles are all live solo performances, and include "Noita Neila", "Esuni Setag", "Lonescariso", "Osirac Snol", and "Er Player Blues Now". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light aging, and light wear in one corner – but is nice overall.)

Jack SelsJack Sels – Minor Works ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Tenorist Jack Sels may not be one of the best-known names on the European jazz scene of the postwar years – but that's likely because he passed away earlier than most, but not before leaving a strong legacy of jazz on the Belgian scene! Sels is a hell of a player – modern in conception, but possessed with a wonderfully soulful tone – one that goes deeper than some of the other European modernists of the period, and which has as much of a sense of Jack's person in the music as it does his overall vision for the sound. This package might be the first that most of us on this side of the Atlantic have experienced his work – and it's a wonderfully-done set that lives up to the quality of the other Belgian funk and jazz sets on this excellent label – with great song choices and very detailed notes. Sels plays with some of his own groups, but also with Lucky Thompson on tenor, Philip Catherine on guitar and Lou Bennett on organ, and also as part of the Saxorama group. Disc one features studio material, disc two features live sides – and titles include "Zonky", "Gemini", "Dong", "Tchack Tchak", "La Campimania", "African Dance", "Blue Triptichon", "Rain On The Grand Place", "Spanish Lady", "Ginger", "Blue Monk", "Swingin The Blues", and "Night In Tunisia". ✨✧ Little AnnDetroit's Secret Soul (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Brilliant soul from the Detroit underground of the late 60s – a full set of work by vocalist Little Ann, issued here for the first time ever! You might recognize Ann's name from her appearance on a few of the Ace/Kent Records issues of material by Detroit producer Dave Hamilton over the years – and the work here all comes from those classic collaborations with Hamilton – trapped on tape for many years, always contemplated as a possible Little Ann album – but only issued in full all these many years later! The groove here is as offbeat as some of Dave's other great work – not nearly as tight, or uptight, as Motown music – and instead, done with a sly undercurrent of darkness on most numbers, even the mellower ones – almost that earliest mix of Detroit styles that you get on pre-fame singles from Westbound Records artists. Ann's vocals are nice and lean, and slide right into the mix with ease – heartfelt enough to grab us right away, yet without any obvious cliches as well. Titles include "What Should I Do", "Who Are You Trying To Fool", "The Smile On Your Face", "Stand Together", "I'm Doin All Right", "Lost A Lover", "That's All I want From You", and "I Got To Have You" – plus the unissued versions "Possession (master edit)", "Deep Shadows (multi mix)", and "Sweet It Out In The Shed (master tape)". PLUS – this CD features 9 more instrumental versions of the tunes by the Dave Hamilton Band – most issued here for the first time ever – plus three more alternates of album tracks! CD

✨✧ New Heavenly BlueNew Heavenly Blue ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mix of rootsy rock and more sophisticated modes – played by a 70s group that features Dave Brubeck's son on a variety of different instruments! The group may well be best known for their work with the older Brubeck on other records – but they stand nicely on their own here too, working through some tracks that show a compelling instrumental virtuosity, especially on guitars – mixing up older acoustic styles with some hipper, trippier elements of the times. Chris Brubeck plays organ, piano, guitar, bass, and trombone – and other instrumentation includes pedal steel, kalimba, electric piano, electric violin, viola, harmonica, flute, and more. Titles include "Nebulon Possessed", "The Idol", "I Look Upon What I Have Done", "Love You Tonite", "Raft Song", "Pegleg", and "Hard Lovin Man". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Laura NyroEli & The Thirteenth Confession ... CD
Columbia, 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Groundbreaking work from Laura Nyro – exactly the kind of record that sums up the unique genius in her music! The record's not folk, not pop, not soul, nor jazz vocals – but a new sort of style that draws a bit from all those genres, and comes up with a bold new approach that opened the door for countless other female singers in years to come. Despite the fame of the record, and many attempts to copy its genius over the years, Nyro is completely without cliche here – unique in her approach and presentation of the material, and as personally possessed as she is fragile and introspective. Arrangements are by Charlie Calello, and really get the spirit of the tunes right – and titles include "Luckie", "Lonely Women", "Emmie", "Timer", "Eli's Comin", "December's Boudouir", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Woman's Blues", and "Once It Was Alright Now". CD includes bonus demo versions of "Lu", "Stoned Soul Picnic" and "Emmie". CD

Unabashed diva work from Linda Clifford – and a record that brings together the best midtempo soul of her earlier Curtom work, with the stronger, fuller disco groove that she was hitting as her career progressed! The album features some production work by Norman Harris and Curtis Mayfield – both of whom seem to bring out the best in Linda, especially Harris – who could work magic by adding a strong Harris Machine groove to just about any singer. The rest of the tracks feature production by Juergen Koppers – and titles include "King For A Night", "Bailin Out", "Repossessed", "Lonely Night", "Never Gonna Stop", "I Just Wanna", and "Here's My Love". ✨✧ Iron ButterflyFillmore East 1968 ... CD
Atco/Wounded Bird, 1968. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An unreleased live performance from Iron Butterfly – one that captures the group at their late 60s height, in front of a very heady crowd at The Fillmore East! The recording quality is great – very clear, and different than the group's studio albums – with maybe even a bit more focus on the vocals of Doug Ingle, and the guitar lines of Erik Brann – in a way that lifts them out of the bottom sound a bit more, and presents the group in a whole new sort of focus! Plus, the brief patter from the stage also really helps us get an idea of how a trippy band like this could hold such great sway over a crowd at the time – energy that doesn't seem to stop at all, through the 2CD set's presentation of material from four different shows, on two nights of recording. Titles include "Are You Happy", "Stamped Ideas", "Fields Of Sun", "You Can't Win", "Unconscious Power", "My Mirage", "Her Favorite Style", "Possession", "Iron Butterfly Theme", and the mighty "In A Gadda Da Vida". ✨✧ Iron ButterflyUnconscious Power – An Anthology 1967 to 1971 (Heavy/In A Gadda Da Vida/Ball/Live/Metamorphosis/Fillmore East/bonus tracks) (7CD set) ... CD
Atco/Eclectic (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 7CD ... Out Of Stock
A monstrous assortment of work from Iron Butterfly – one of the key groups in helping the American scene move from psych to hard rock at the end of the 60s! First up are mono and stereo mixes of Heavy – a record that's not nearly as well known as their classic In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida – but which has a very similar vibe all the way through! The songs are a bit shorter, but these guys really manage to do a lot with a little – using lots of brooding bass right up from the bottom, to create a blueprint for hard rock imitators in years to come – none of whom were able to match these guys' simple, direct approach – and their optimistic sense of power in their music. Many numbers often have this vocal interplay that really works wonderful with the fuzzy guitar lines – and titles include "Possession", "Unconscious Power", "So Lo", "Look For The Sun", "Stamped Ideas", "Fields Of The Sun", and a nice fuzzy funk version of "Get Out Of My Life Woman". Next is the stereo mix of In A Gadda Da Vida – the album that rocked a million dorm rooms back in the 60s – and for good reason, too – given that the title track is a side-long, totally jamming monster – the kind of track that was really revolutionary at the time, and which still has a hell of an impact all these many years later! "In A Gadda Da Vida" was shortened to a single – with the big hook intact – but this classic album version runs for 17 minutes in length, and has the group doing all these cool jams with their instruments – all the animals in the garden of Eden talking to each other (or at least that's what our addled teenaged minds always thought!) Shorter tracks are mighty nice too – a heady, heavy brew of Hammond and fierce guitar from Erik Brann, on cuts all penned by group leader Doug Ingle. Titles include "Termination", "My Mirage", "Flowers & Roses", and "Most Anything You Want". Next is the stereo mix of Ball – a killer classic from Iron Butterfly – a group who always had way more to offer than their hits, as you'll find out when dipping into this full length set! The album's worth it alone for the organ lines – which kind of take off from the territory of The Doors, but are often more unusual – and mixed with vocals that can have an eerie sensibility, but without ever sounding indulgent! The music's not pop psych, but it's also never too full of itself – and titles include "In The Crowds", "In The Time Of Our Lives", "Soul Experience", "Lonely Boy", "Belda Beast", and "Filled With Fear". Next are mono and stereo mixes of Live – great live document of the heady power of Iron Butterfly – with titles that include "You Can't Win", "Are You Happy", "In A Gadda Da Vida", "Filled With Fear", and "In The Time Of Our Lives". Next is Metamorphosis – a record that's not a complete metamorphosis for Iron Butterfly, but one that definitely has the group stretching out with even more force and confidence than before! The group were maybe one of the few to come to hard rock via psych, instead of the blues rock path that so many others took at the time – and that difference is key here, as the songs really resonate with the potential for trippiness, but have this great sense of focus – one that makes the vocals sound even more potent than ever. There's still plenty of great organ work too – and titles include "Free Flight", "Shady Lady", "Best Years Of Our Life", "Slower Than Guns", and "Stone Believer". The set also features the 2CD 1968 Fillmore East set – an unreleased live performance from Iron Butterfly – one that captures the group at their late 60s height, in front of a very heady crowd at The Fillmore East! ✨✧ Millie Jackson21 Of The Best – 1971 to 1983 ... CD
Spring/Southbound (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from Millie Jackson – a singer so great, it's hard to say that even 21 tracks could make up her "best"! Jackson first emerged at the start of the 70s as a really fresh voice in southern soul – one that was partly tied to the heartbreaking style of the decade before, but who also soon found her voice as a bolder, more self-possessed woman – bridging a gap between weepy soul and unabashed desire that makes her work on this collection so powerful! Producer Brad Shapiro was one of Millie's guiding forces in the studio – and together, they really helped reset the female voice in soul music with these recordings for Spring Records in the 70s – a great lineup of cuts that includes "Kiss You All Over", "Do You Wanna Make Love", "Loving Arms", "Bad Risk", "It Hurts So Good", "My Man A Sweet Man", "Ask Me What You Want", "Keep The Home Fire Burning", "I Feel Like Walking In The Rain", "It's Gonna Take Some Time This Time", "Never Change Lovers In The Middle Of The Night", "All The Way Lover", and "If You're Not Back In Love By Monday". One of the best albums in years from jazz singer Vanessa Rubin – a very hip set dedicated to the music of Tadd Dameron, which makes for a collection of tunes that go way past the usual! Plus, in addition to a great set of songs, the album also features direction from Cecil Bridgewater – and arrangements by Jimmy Heath, Bobby Watson, Frank Foster, and Benny Golson – really giving things a soulful swing that's just right for Vanessa's vocals! The whole thing's got all the best charm of her early work, but maybe an even hipper edge – and players include Eddie Allen on trumpet, Clifton Anderson on trombone, Patience Higgins on tenor, Bruce Williams on alto, John Cowherd on piano, and Carl Allen on drums. Many tracks are nice along, with room enough for instrumental solos too – and titles include "Kitchenette Across The Hall", "Ladybird", "Whatever Possessed Me", "I Think I'll Go Away", "Weekend", "On A Misty Night", and "Good Bait".
