Stelvio CiprianiLa Notte Dell'Ultimo Giorno/Processo Per Direttissima ... CD
Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy ... $20.99 29.99
Two rare 70s gems from the great Stelvio Cipriani – back to back on a single CD! First up is La Notte Dell'Ultimo Giorno – a record that begins with some of the slinkier modes that we love in Cipriani's music, but which also gets nicely funky at points too – almost always graced by the kind of keyboard lines that make Stelvio such a standout! The keys include electric harpsichord, organ, and what sounds like some of that oddly-tuned piano that Ennio Morricone might use – flowering out in this beautifully balanced mix of modes. Processo Per Direttissima is a film about terrorism and police brutality, but one that gets this wonderfully sweet score from Cipriani – served up in flowing basslines, light percussion, gentle strings, and the kind of forward-moving elements we love so much in Stelvio's music – a quality here that sounds much more like his love or erotic scores than you'd guess from such a thriller! CD features 25 tracks in all – over 70 minutes of music. CD

Dead PrezLets Get Free ... LP
Loud/Get On Down, 2000. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $28.99 30.98
The dawn of millennium classic by Dead Prez – and angry, revolution-minded effort from a period on major label hip hop that sorely lacked such strident players – and if it didn't make any huge waves commercially, that only strengthens its legacy! Sticman & M1 are at the top of their game lyrically, the beats are are exciting to this day, and it all adds up to one of the strongest politically minded hip hop records of its time. Titles include "Wolves", "Hip Hop", "They Schools", "The Pistol", "Discipline", "Enemy Lines", "Mind Sex", "Propaganda", "You'll Find A Way", "Police State", and many more. LP, Vinyl record album

Fela & Africa 70Sorrow Tears & Blood (180 gram pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
Knitting Factory, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
An impassioned attack on police and army violence in 70s Nigeria – and easily one of Fela Kuti's best-remembered albums of the time! The lead track – "Sorrow Tears & Blood" – is really tremendous – a wicked groove that begins with a very long electric piano solo, which sets things up with almost a melancholy vibe – which is then echoed by the alto sax – all instrumental elements that create their own sort of pain and anguish, which is then given focus by the angry lyrics of the tune! "Colonial Mentality" has an equally sinister vibe, and some especially strong saxophone work – really powerful, and with a very sharp edge – so that it really stands out from the rest of the group! Berkely Ike JonesNation Building ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1979. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
A mighty nice set from Berkely Ike Jones – guitarist and one of the founders of the legendary Blo – working here in a groove that's a bit more Afro disco overall, but which still has all the great touches of his previous work! The music's plenty funky, but more in a clubby way than some of the more familiar Afro Funk modes you might know from the mid 70s – with lyrics in English, and an overall vibe that's like the best post-colonial work coming from the Paris and London scenes at the time! Part of the album was recorded in London, which may account for the vibe – and the instrumentation is tightly played, but never slick. There's definitely some politics in the mix, too – surprisingly righteous lyrics, on tunes that include "It's Time For Nation Building", "Calling Health Men/Police", "Tears In The Ghetto", "National Pledge", and "1979". Franco MicalizziLa Banda Del Gobbo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Digitmovies (Italy), 1977. New Copy Gatefold ... $34.99 58.98
Funky 70s crime cinema sounds from Italy – done for giallo, police thriller and gore maestro Umberto Lenzi's La Banda Del Gobbo, by Franco Micalizzi – a frenetic, funky and action packed score that hardly lets up for a moment! We knew we were in for a treat from the second we put it on – with the crisp bass line, the chicken scratch guitar, and the spacey keys the floated in right at the start – and that's before the drums and horns even kicked in! Totally great stuff – reminiscent of sound library funk, full on 70s crime score grooviness, and proggy keys as an added bonus – a near perfect later 70s exploitation soundtrack! Includes 18 tracks in all LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio MorriconeMilano Odia – La Polizia Non Puo Sparare (180 gram red vinyl pressing) ... LP
GDM (Italy), 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... $36.99
A beautifully sensitive Italian police soundtrack from the 70s – one scored by Ennio Morricone with a bit less of the funky bits of other cop scores of the time, and a nice mix of sad-tinged, personal styles! There's a fair bit of key Morricone touches here that resonate with his best other work of the time – spacious, almost stepping rhythms; dramatic isolated instrumentation, including a bit of off-key piano; and some warmer tones that soften some of the best moments, and keep them from being too cold or dark. The drama here is subtle, but effective – and the score's a real lost gem in the catalog of the maestro deserving wider attention! Titles include "Rapimento", "Raptus Omicida", "Milano Odia La Polizi Non Puo Sparare", and "I Conti Ora Tornano". First-ever full issue of the score – as only a few cuts were only ever issued before on a single! LP, Vinyl record album

Ennio Morricone/Bruno NicolaiBandits In Rome ... LP
Quartet (Spain), 1968. New Copy ... $34.99 48.99
One of the more obscure Ennio Morricone soundtracks of the late 60s – done in close collaboration with musical partner Bruno Nicolai, for a gangster film that stars John Cassavettes in the lead! A number of tracks have an older crime jazz sort of vibe – similar to the Italian modes from earlier in the decades – mixed with more driving, action-based tunes that really sow some of Nicolai's touches – orchestrations that are sometimes a bit denser than Morricone might use, but which continue to have a wonderful sense of thematic repetition that links the whole thing together nicely! The set has all the instrumental tracks working together wonderfully – almost like an audio suite that represents the rare visual experience – and titles include "Karate", "Nightmare", "I Like My Life", "Wild West Show", "Police & Hands Up", "Desperate", "The Club", and "Bandits In Rome". ✨✧ Roy BuddStone Killer (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Beatball (Korea), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the darkest Roy Budd scores ever – designed to accompany a brutal police film starring Charles Bronson! The main theme has a nice electronic sound that's kind of like the "Mystery Movie" theme from the 70s – then the score moves into some nicely moody regions that feature spare Fender Rhodes riffs underpinned by dark orchestral scoring! Occasional beats and jazzy rhythms move into the picture from time to time, and the album has one nice groovy vocal track – the sweet "Black Is Beautiful", which features Roy on electric keys, and some nice female vocals, very much in the tradition of one of the vocal numbers from Get Carter. Titles include "Jazz Source", "Cool Bossa Source", "Too Late", "Main Titles", and "M3 (sk 1)". Nice stuff, and one of Budd's best moments from the 70s! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stelvio CiprianiPoliziotto Senza Paura ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Cool Italian cop soundtrack work from Stelvio Cipriani – easily one of the true masters of the genre! The music is a great mix of mellow moods and funkier moments – spare, piano or keyboard-tinged tunes, which are then offset by more driving numbers that push along with fast guitar, heavy drums, and the general sort of groove you might expect in cop show work of the 70s! Cipriani always does a good job of bringing in some lyrical, more sensitive elements to his music – things that really keep things light, while also creating a rich sense of feeling – quite a bit different than slicker US police work of the period. CD features 22 tracks in all – a nicely groovy mix of styles! CD

An excellent 70s funky thriller soundtrack! This one's been a lost gem for sample freaks for years – and no wonder, since it's filled with funky riffing, tight rhythm tracks, and fierce horn blasts. The score was written by David Shire to accompany a thriller about some guys who hijack a subway in New York – and it feels like similar work from the time by Quincy Jones or Roy Budd. The tracks really vary in length – from short moody atmospheric numbers, to longer flat-out jazzy ones – and the soundtrack's just about impossible to find in any other form. ✨✧ Luciani MicheliniLa Polizia Accusa – Il Sevizio Segreto Uccide ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous little police soundtrack from 70s Italy – one with plenty of Morricone-like touches, but that's A-OK with us! Luciano Michelini does a great job here of juxtaposing stark sounds with sweeter ones – particularly some great piano that's isolated nicely above the orchestrations, and played in flat, off-kilter tones – as well as some eerie flute that drifts through slowly sometimes, more quickly at others – all with a good sense of variety and dramatic energy. The strings are sometimes stepping, almost with a slight undercurrent of funk – but are slower and more offbeat at other times – creating a great sense of tension in the music. CD features a whopping 25 tracks, remastered from the original tapes! CD

Stefano Torossi & Giovanni TomassoEchoing America (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cometa (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A record that definitely lives up to its title – an obscure Italian sound library session that blends instrumental touches that evoke an America at the start of the 70s with some of the hipper, deeper currents you'd expect from the team of Stefano Torossi and Giovanni Tomasso! There's plenty of expected sound library funk in the mix here – but there's also bits of banjo, harmonica, and acoustic guitar – all used sparely, but in a way that paints "America" on some of the groovier cuts here – in a way that makes for one of the most unique sound library sessions we've ever heard! Plus, the book comes with some nicely hokey notes about our nation, and some nice vintage photos – including images of a hippie wrapped in a flag in a hammock, and a confederate soldier loading a canon. Titles include "Black Power", "Policeman", "Fake It", "Six Miles From Blackstook", "Slateridge Sunday Breakdown", "Harlem Jungle", and "Metropolis". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousFunky Chimes – Belgian Grooves From The 70s ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $32.99
Funk from Belgium? Believe it or not, stranger things have happened – and we can promise that if you played these tracks back to back with more familiar grooves from other 70s sources, you'd quickly find that these Belgian grooves are right up there with the best of the bunch! The set's maybe a more sophisticated follow-up to the excellent Funky Chicken collection, which documented some grittier Belgian 70s material a few years back – and this one shows off a wickedly sharp batch of tunes that include funky fusion, sweet sound library numbers, and lots of really inventive cuts that are plenty funk, but often take some great chances too – in ways that almost make us think that the nation's scene was so small that musicians from different genres were often hanging out together, and breaking down lots of musical boundaries in the process! As with the other set, the presentation here is wonderful – not just fantastic music we'd never have discovered otherwise, but also very detailed notes and an overall punch that few other funky compilations can match. Titles include "Funky Chimes" by Francis Coppieters, "My Chinese Girl Likes Kung Fu Fighting" by The Sumos, "Traveling On Rhythms" by Bud Hunga & His Diplomatic Music, "Pink Movement" by Experience, "Tiger Walk" by The Peter Laine Orchestra, "Faded Lady (inst)" by SSO, "Barabajagal" by The Flying Guitar, "Scratch My Back (parts 1 & 2)" by The Soul Scratchers, "Skylab" by Electronic System III, "Free Way Exit" by Guido Carnagy, "Guess We'd Better Break Up Now" by Etta Cameron, "Give It Up Or Turn It A Loose" by Philip Catherine, "Riff For Peggy" by Roland Thyssen, "We Love The Policemen" by Hearts Of Soul & Shampoo, "Smoke Signal" by Indian Sound Of Blackfoot, "Inner City Blues" by Leslie Kent, "Chewing Gum Delirium" by Free Pop Electronic Concept, "Akkerwinde" by Lieven, "Concerto For Right Foot & Orchestra" by George Hayes & His Philarpopic Orchestra, "Punktowiec" by Skleroptak, and "Soul Melody" by R Dero. Cometa (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $32.99 36.98
Not much of a cover, but that's usually the way it is with the Cometa Sound Library – who provided all the great grooves on this set! Cometa was one of the more obscure sound library labels on the 70s scene – but they also maybe lasted the longest, perhaps because they were small – and they managed to forge relations with some of the best composers from the Italian film scene at the time – who bring to their recordings a wealth of cool instrumental touches and unusual elements that rival our favorite soundtracks! This set follows the full scope of the Cometa sound – some numbers are funky, some are jazzy, some are dreamy, and one even gets a bit disco – and titles include "Il Caso Bebawi" by Berto Pisano, "Colpi Di Piume E Tempesta" by Ennio Morricone, "American Sound" by Alessandro Alessandroni & Sandro Brugnoli, "Macchina D'Amore" by Armando Trovajoli, "Dolce Notte" by Luigi Zito, and "Policeman" by Tito Schipa & Giovanni Tommaso. A record that's a bit of an anomaly, given that it was created in the time of Covid – as the Gorillaz work here with a whole host of guest stars – in the kind of musical party that most local authorities would shut down! Yet given the virtual nature of the group – the core of Damon Albarn and Remi Kabaka – the approach is a great one for the very unusual year of 2020 – as they open the creative door to contributions from Beck, Schoolboy Q, Robert Smith, Elton John, Peter Hook, Fatoumata Diawara, St Vincent, Slowthai, Leee John, and others. The record is accompanied by the kind of graphics that have helped cement the mixed imaginary image of the band – and titles include "Strange Timez", "The Valley Of The Pagans", "The Lost Chord", "Momentary Bliss", "Dead Butterflies", "Friday 13th", and "Chalk Tablet Towers". Deluxe edition features bonus contributions from Tony Allen, Jpegmafia, Skepta, Goldlink, Joan As Policewoman, Moonchild Sanelly, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra – and comes in a very cool hardcover book-style cover, with bonus artwork!
