Black FlagDamaged ... LP
Unicorn/SST, 1981. Very Good+ ... $99.99
An unmitigated blast of punk, worthy of setting the stage for the American hard core movement! While punk rock had been firmly established by the time this album came out, no one was prepared for the next level that Black Flag would take things to with this brutal, nihilistic, stripped down assault on the status quo! A classic that will stand up for ages, wit fist in the air anthems like "Rise Above", "Six Pack", "What I See", "TV Party", "Police Story", "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie", "Thirsty & Miserable", "Depression", "Padded Cell", "Damaged I", "Damaged II", "Life Of Pain", "Room 103" and "No More". David Boykin & SebauLast Slave Movie/Which Side Are You On ... CD
Sonic Healing Ministries, 2018. New Copy ... $6.99
Maybe one of the most political projects we've ever heard from saxophonist David Boykin, and one of the most ambitious too – a jazz opera that deals with the recent struggles of black America in the face of increased police brutality – inspired by the tragic deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and others! The piece features vocals – both sung and rhymed, performed by a group that was put together especially for this event – with vocals from Rhonda Gray and Quenna Lene, plus Boykin himself – and rhymes from Manu Wisdom. Bokyin plays fantastic tenor throughout, alongside drums from Josh Ross and bass from Rollo Radford – and the mix of voice with this stripped-down lineup is incredibly powerful, with the best energy of an underground project like this from the 70s. The group also features a bit of turntable work from Abstract Black and some piano from Aliyyah Heatherington – and the whole thing was recorded live in concert, in late 2017. CD
(CDR release – direct from the artist!)

ClashClash (EU pressing) ... LP
CBS (UK), 1977. Near Mint- ... $49.99
One of the most stunning debut albums of the 70s – and a set that burst on the scene with a sound that summed up a generation, but which had never been heard this clearly before! This self-titled Clash album was different from other landmarks of the time – work by the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and others – as the group had a sense of raw power, but also a tunefulness too – a way of pushing their message into territory that others wouldn't have reached – with tunes that were as surprisingly hummable as they were politically correct! There's a bit less Jamaican influence here than in later Clash years, but that quality is still present somewhat – and over the years, this is definitely a set we can return to again and again – with no sense of apology or outdated ideals at all. Nearly every cut's a classic – and titles include "Janie Jones", "Career Opportunities", "Police & Thieves", "Garageland", "Clash City Rockers", "I Fought The Law", "White Riot", "London's Burning", "White Man In Hammersmith Palais", and "I'm So Bored With The USA". LP, Vinyl record album
(Dutch pressing. Cover has some surface wear and a round sticker spot.)

CrimeSan Francisco's Doomed ... LP
Superior Viaduct, Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 22.99
A sonic juggernaut from Crime – and a set that marks a much-needed addition to their too-few records from the late 70s! Crime were slightly slept-on at the time, but have gone on to get the dues they greatly deserve – a razor-sharp band whose sound is as striking as their use of police uniforms as costumes – a musical quality that's sometimes more Stooges than punk, and we mean that in the best way possible – as these guys are equally off in a space of their own, yet still have managed to influence so many others on so many scenes. The set features rare material from studio session and rehearsal tapes – and titles include "Dillinger's Brain", "Flipout", "Monkey On Your Back", "Yakuza", "Emergency Music Ward", "I Knew This Nurse", "Crime Wave", "Murder By Guitar", and "Piss On Your Dog". Guido & Maurizio De AngelisMilano Trema – La Polizia Vuole Giustizia (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... $16.99 22.99
A tremendous Italian police soundtrack from the team of Guido and Maurizio De Angelis – one that has a haunting approach served up in equal parts action and sentiment! The core melody here is one right out of Morricone's book of the time – a slow-building, sweet-stepping one that's a far bit different than US cop show work – and which sits nicely next to some more upbeat numbers that work in a bit of jazz alongside funkier basslines and a few darker numbers too. There's a slight electric feel to many numbers, but instrumentation is often heavy on flute too – and in a way, there's a fair bit of qualities here that remind us of Stelvio Cipriani's best from the same period. This edition features a lot of bonus tracks – a total of 26 titles in all! CD

✨✧ DjeuhDjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson2+ ... LP
Hot Casa (France), 2022. New Copy 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
A set that's as warm and sunny as the image on the cover – one that continues the mix of global elements and contemporary production from this very hip team! There's a vibe here that's almost like some of the Africanism tracks from the French scene in years back – that is, with more of a contemporary vibe overall, and plenty of sweet beats and keyboards – moving past familiar house with a style that's more lean, and which makes just the right use of all the elements that DjDj and LtN want to throw into the mix! Vocals are in French, and as warmly soulful as the music – on titles that include "Ping Pong", "Bola Mba", "Rai Publique", "Pas Si Vite", "Clic", "The A La Menthe", "Caipirinha", "Planete", "Police", "Continent De Joie", and "Coeur Breton". Berkely Ike JonesNation Building ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1979. New Copy ... $3.99 16.99
A mighty nice set from Berkely Ike Jones – guitarist and one of the founders of the legendary Blo – working here in a groove that's a bit more Afro disco overall, but which still has all the great touches of his previous work! The music's plenty funky, but more in a clubby way than some of the more familiar Afro Funk modes you might know from the mid 70s – with lyrics in English, and an overall vibe that's like the best post-colonial work coming from the Paris and London scenes at the time! Part of the album was recorded in London, which may account for the vibe – and the instrumentation is tightly played, but never slick. There's definitely some politics in the mix, too – surprisingly righteous lyrics, on tunes that include "It's Time For Nation Building", "Calling Health Men/Police", "Tears In The Ghetto", "National Pledge", and "1979". ✨✧ Stanton MooreEmphasis (On Parenthesis) ... CD
Telarc, 2008. Used ... $5.99
A (completely) terrific and (totally) powerful jazz funk trio set from Galactic drummer Stanton Moore – even if we don't know why all the tunes have parenthesis! There's no question that the set is emphatic – with Moore just killing it on the kit – backed just as dexterously Robert Walter on B3, toy piano and clavinet, and Will Bernard on guitar. There's a bottom heavy groove that we just love, with complex, unpredictable changes, but nothing that's too far out there. Jazzy funk & instrumental rock(ish) jams with loads of space for the players to breathe and do their thing without ever wearing out their welcome. This might be Stanton's best to date. Tracks include "(Late Night At The) Maple Leaf", "(Proper) Gander", "Wissons (Of Vu)", "Over (Compensatin')", "(Who Ate The) Layer Cake, "(Here Come) The Brown Police" and more! CD

Ennio MorriconeLe Professionnel/Le Marginal (with bonus tracks) ... CD
General Music/Music Box (France), Early 80s. New Copy 2CDs ... $29.99
A pair of classic 80s scores from Ennio Morricone – both done for a series of films that feature Jean Paul Belmondo in an action role! First up is Le Professionnel – a great little Morricone soundtrack – later than most of the classic work, but done for a French thriller that starred Jean-Paul Belmondo, with some great spare compositions that have slight romantic French soundtrack touches! There's some great numbers that feature Morricone's style of drifting solo instruments over strings – including some cool piano with a very offbeat feel – and others that have a wonderfully sweeping full and majestic feel! But given the action in the narrative, there's also a nice undercurrent of darkness too – which keeps things interesting and powerful throughout – in the best manner of a Morricone cop/crime film of the 70s. Titles include "D'Afrique", "Chi Mai", "Le Retour", "Le Vent Le Cri", and "Decision Finale". CD features 26 tracks in all – way more than the original album! Next up is Le Marginal – Ennio Morricone's score for the second Jean-Paul Belmondo "Professionel" police film – written two years after the first soundtrack, and with a feel that's a bit more electric and cop show-oriented! There's still plenty of great Morricone touches on the set – including his strong penchant for using space to really heighten the tension of a theme – but the instrumentation also features some electric bass undercurrents that are a bit stronger than usual, making for more of a cop funk groove than you'd expect from Morricone! This expanded CD edition features a total of 25 tracks – far more than the original album – and titles include "Le Marginal", "HSM", "Hypertension", "Theme Classique", "Don't Think Twice", and "Dreamer". Andre PrevinDead Ringer ... LP
Warner, 1964. Very Good+ ... $8.99
A wonderfully gripping score from Andre Previn – one of his best early dramatic soundtracks! The work's got a style that really befits the dark image on the cover – muted strings that rumble in the background, as other bits of instrumentation – horns, harpsichord, and violin – emerge from the almost watery backdrop of sound. There's a tensness here that's really great – and the sharp-edged harpsichord almost recalls later Italian use of the instrument, especially by Morricone. Titles include "The Morgue", "Edie's Theme", "This Was His Room", "Hidden Jewelry", "The Police Is Waiting", "Figueroa", and "The Dog Attacks". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousSocial Classics Volume 2 – Dread Meets Punk Rockers Uptown – Selected By DJ Don Letts ... CD
EMI (UK), 1970s. Used ... $19.99
Massive! Sure, the reggae compilation scene is starting to really pick up steam, and like funk and rare groove compilations, there is some overlap, but you can't deny the heaviness of this set by Don Letts, "the Boss with the musical sauce". Well before his stint with Big Audio Dynamite, Don Letts was responsible for many of the ties between the young, hip British punk scene and hardcore reggae trendsetters, and even was instrumental in connecting a lot of Jamaican artists with Virgin when they started their Frontline imprint, many of which we've seen as reissues here recently. As selector he drops many, many classic roots numbers, including just about all of our favorites. The 16 tracks included here read like a virtual top to bottom of essential rhythms: King Tubby "Bag A Wire Dub", Big Youth "Marcus Garvey", Junior Byles "Fade Away", Tappa Zukie "MPLA Dub", Jah Stitch "Black Harmony Killer", The Congos "Fisherman", U-Roy "Wear You To The Ball", Tappa Zukie "Rush I Some Dub", Horace Andy "Pure Ranking (Discomix)", The Mighty Diamonds "I Need A Roof", Augustus Pablo "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown", U Brown "Train To Zion", Culture "Two Sevens Clash", Sylford Walker "Deuteronomy", Junior Murvin "Police & Thieves" and Lee Perry & The Upsetters "The Tackro". ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeMilano Odia – La Polizia Non Puo Sparare ... LP
GDM (Italy), 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautifully sensitive Italian police soundtrack from the 70s – one scored by Ennio Morricone with a bit less of the funky bits of other cop scores of the time, and a nice mix of sad-tinged, personal styles! There's a fair bit of key Morricone touches here that resonate with his best other work of the time – spacious, almost stepping rhythms; dramatic isolated instrumentation, including a bit of off-key piano; and some warmer tones that soften some of the best moments, and keep them from being too cold or dark. The drama here is subtle, but effective – and the score's a real lost gem in the catalog of the maestro deserving wider attention! Titles include "Rapimento", "Raptus Omicida", "Milano Odia La Polizi Non Puo Sparare", and "I Conti Ora Tornano". First-ever full issue of the score – as only a few cuts were only ever issued before on a single! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lee Scratch Perry & FriendsBlack Ark Years – The Jamaican 7 Inches ... CD
Trojan/Sanctuary (UK), Mid 70s. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the greatest work ever recorded by the mighty Lee Perry – a searing selection of 44 seven inch singles – all of which were well-tuned to boom out of Kingston sound systems back in the day! There's a sense of focus here that's wonderful – still all the odd, dubby twists and turns that make Perry's music so great – but honed down into the space of tight cuts that really helped redefine the role of the 45rpm single in Jamaican music! Lee takes the lead on a few cuts, and sits behind the controls of Black Ark on all the others – and titles include "Vibrate Onn (Jamaican mix)" by Augustus Pablo & The Upsetters, "It Hurts So Good" by Susan Cadogan, "Dreader Locks" by Junior Byles & Lee Perry, "Police & Thief" by Junior Murvin, "Ital Corner" by Prince Jazzbo, "Sipple Out Deh (Jamaican mix)" by Max Romeo, "Down Here In Babylon" by Brent Dowe, "Three Blind Mice" by Max Romeo, "Land Of Love" by The Sons Of Light, "Travelling" by Debra Keese & The Black Five, and "Think So" by The Meditations. ✨✧ Wesley BrownBlue In Green – A Novella (hardcover) ... Book
Blank Forms, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A work of fiction, but one that dives deep into the mind of Miles Davis, its main character – in a tale that begins with a police assault outside Birdland one night in August of 1959, then follows Davis as he reacts the the experience – moving around the city, and ruminating about his role in jazz and the impulses that have brought him so far. Author Wesley Brown takes a lot of liberty with dialogue and thoughts that might have been going through Miles' head – and romantic interest Frances Taylor figures strongly in the story as well. Some might argue for the opinions uttered by Davis in the story, and the tone he takes when speaking – but that's also part of the compelling quality of the book, and the risks it takes – imagining internal and external modes amidst a framework of actual events. 65 pages, hardcover. Knitting Factory, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An impassioned attack on police and army violence in 70s Nigeria – and easily one of Fela Kuti's best-remembered albums of the time! The lead track – "Sorrow Tears & Blood" – is really tremendous – a wicked groove that begins with a very long electric piano solo, which sets things up with almost a melancholy vibe – which is then echoed by the alto sax – all instrumental elements that create their own sort of pain and anguish, which is then given focus by the angry lyrics of the tune! "Colonial Mentality" has an equally sinister vibe, and some especially strong saxophone work – really powerful, and with a very sharp edge – so that it really stands out from the rest of the group! MGM/Quartet (Spain), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An excellent 70s funky thriller soundtrack! This one's been a lost gem for sample freaks for years – and no wonder, since it's filled with funky riffing, tight rhythm tracks, and fierce horn blasts. The score was written by David Shire to accompany a thriller about some guys who hijack a subway in New York – and it feels like similar work from the time by Quincy Jones or Roy Budd. The tracks really vary in length – from short moody atmospheric numbers, to longer flat-out jazzy ones – and the soundtrack's just about impossible to find in any other form. Titles include "Goodbye Hippie", "Mini Manhunt", "The Taking", "More Taking", "Money Montage", "I Am Police Officer", and "Blue Green Talk". CD

The first album from Gong – and a weird little masterpiece that's left an undeniable imprint over the years! There's a definite proggish feel to the set, and some jazz rock elements too – but the overall approach is considerably madder than most at the time – hardly headed for the charts, and with more than enough space for weird little twists and turns that really keep things interesting! Production has a nicely rough quality that makes the record quite different from the group's later work – and the lyrics have a nicely looney feel that's a bit like work by Syd Barrett or Kevin Ayers. VariousFunky Chimes – Belgian Grooves From The 70s ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $32.99 35.99
Funk from Belgium? Believe it or not, stranger things have happened – and we can promise that if you played these tracks back to back with more familiar grooves from other 70s sources, you'd quickly find that these Belgian grooves are right up there with the best of the bunch! The set's maybe a more sophisticated follow-up to the excellent Funky Chicken collection, which documented some grittier Belgian 70s material a few years back – and this one shows off a wickedly sharp batch of tunes that include funky fusion, sweet sound library numbers, and lots of really inventive cuts that are plenty funk, but often take some great chances too – in ways that almost make us think that the nation's scene was so small that musicians from different genres were often hanging out together, and breaking down lots of musical boundaries in the process! As with the other set, the presentation here is wonderful – not just fantastic music we'd never have discovered otherwise, but also very detailed notes and an overall punch that few other funky compilations can match. Titles include "Funky Chimes" by Francis Coppieters, "My Chinese Girl Likes Kung Fu Fighting" by The Sumos, "Traveling On Rhythms" by Bud Hunga & His Diplomatic Music, "Pink Movement" by Experience, "Tiger Walk" by The Peter Laine Orchestra, "Faded Lady (inst)" by SSO, "Barabajagal" by The Flying Guitar, "Scratch My Back (parts 1 & 2)" by The Soul Scratchers, "Skylab" by Electronic System III, "Free Way Exit" by Guido Carnagy, "Guess We'd Better Break Up Now" by Etta Cameron, "Give It Up Or Turn It A Loose" by Philip Catherine, "Riff For Peggy" by Roland Thyssen, "We Love The Policemen" by Hearts Of Soul & Shampoo, "Smoke Signal" by Indian Sound Of Blackfoot, "Inner City Blues" by Leslie Kent, "Chewing Gum Delirium" by Free Pop Electronic Concept, "Akkerwinde" by Lieven, "Concerto For Right Foot & Orchestra" by George Hayes & His Philarpopic Orchestra, "Punktowiec" by Skleroptak, and "Soul Melody" by R Dero. Cometa (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Not much of a cover, but that's usually the way it is with the Cometa Sound Library – who provided all the great grooves on this set! Cometa was one of the more obscure sound library labels on the 70s scene – but they also maybe lasted the longest, perhaps because they were small – and they managed to forge relations with some of the best composers from the Italian film scene at the time – who bring to their recordings a wealth of cool instrumental touches and unusual elements that rival our favorite soundtracks! This set follows the full scope of the Cometa sound – some numbers are funky, some are jazzy, some are dreamy, and one even gets a bit disco – and titles include "Il Caso Bebawi" by Berto Pisano, "Colpi Di Piume E Tempesta" by Ennio Morricone, "American Sound" by Alessandro Alessandroni & Sandro Brugnoli, "Macchina D'Amore" by Armando Trovajoli, "Dolce Notte" by Luigi Zito, and "Policeman" by Tito Schipa & Giovanni Tommaso.
