Diamond Street PlayersDiamond Street Players ... LP
Gemco, 2019. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
Raw funky soul from Diamond Street Players – heavy on vintage inspired, timelessly spun instrumentals, but nailing down some standout vocal jams with Orgone vocalist Adryon de Leon and Atlanta soul singer Amanda Joy – and ultimately delivering a solid gem for the Gemco label! The core group is a 5 piece with Ben Davis on sax and flute, Ian Newberry and Kevin Scott on guitars, Mark Raudabuagh on guitars and Spencer Garn on Hammond & Rhodes. Garn grooves strong enough to qualify as the group's secret weapon, but they're really a well oiled unit all around, nailing it on the intrumental tip and on soul-steeped backing vocals. Titles include "How Many Lies, How Many Times" with Adryon De Leon "Split The Difference", "Bada Dum Dum", "Healey '67", "Murky Retrograde", "Organ Workout", "Suzy's Boogaloo", "Million Miles" with Amanda Joy LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ohio PlayersFunk On Fire – The Mercury Anthology ... CD
Mercury, Mid 70s. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A whopping 2CD compilation of some of the best funky moments from the Ohio Players post-Westbound work for Mercury! This is the stuff that brought funk into the top 10 in the US – and the Players manage to mix together a tight well-produced sound with the same raw funk sensibility that got them started way back in the 60s. There's a huge amount of great tracks on here – including "Shady Lady", "Body Vibes", "Good Luck Charm", "Fire", "Jive Turkey", "Heaven Must Be Like This", "Sweet Sticky Thing", "Fopp", "Skin Tight", "Love Rollercoaster", "Who'd She Coo?", "Funk-O-Nots", "Honey", "O-H-I-O" and lots lots more! 28 tracks in all, and digitally remastered for great sound, in fact, the only thing missing here, is a naked bald lady on the cover (oops, guess that's the westbound years). Mindblowing funk from The Ohio Players – the group's debut album for Westbound Records, and a landmark batch of tracks that never gets old! The sound here really has the group stretching out a lot – working on tunes that are extended, but never as overindulgent as their labelmates Funkadelic – always keeping to a groove that's focused, yet also free to explore its bad self in the new freedoms of the 70s. There's a strong undercurrent of funky jazz running through the set – mixing great riffing alongside the tight rhythms and tripped-out vocals – all brought together with that deep deep deep production sound that Westbound gave the world as its own legacy in the wake of Norman Whitfield's experiments at Motown. Titles include the wonderfully jamming "Players Balling", and the funky numbers "Reds" and "Singing In The Morning" – plus more soulful tracks "I Wanna Hear From You" and "Never Had A Dream". Westbound (UK), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99 22.99
A true pleasure indeed – easily one of the greatest records ever by the Ohio Players, and a perfect summation of all things great in their groove! The album's a landmark effort – even for the heady days of the early 70s – as the Players manage to bring together a fair bit of jazz with their famous guitar-driven funk – all in a blend that's a lot more sophisticated than most other funk combos of the time, from the rhythms at the bottom to the instrumentation on the top! There's a darkness here that's undeniable – but the album's also not just a head trip into the fuzziest reaches of the studio – as the jazzier inflections help illuminate the farthest corners, and really bring the whole album back to focus with a wonderfully redemptive groove! Psychedelic elements are still all over the place, but also used sparingly enough to be most effective – a brilliant balance that few groups of this type were ever able to muster. Titles include the classic "Funky Worm", with the wild moogy bit that's been sampled loads of times over the years by a gazillion hip hoppers – plus loads of other nice ones, like the slow bonking funker "Pride & Vanity", the wild "Walt's First Trip", and the groovy "Laid It" – as well as "Pleasure", "Paint Me", "Our Love Has Died", and "Walked Away From You". Maybe the last great album in the Ohio Players run for Mercury in the mid 70s – a set that's every bit as smooth, sexy, and funky as their other major label efforts from the time – and one that continued to refine the grittier funk of their roots! While the Players might be remembered for their over the top jams, the cuts here we love the best are the mellower steppers – tracks that still have plenty of funk in the mix, but hit a gentler groove, too – following the spacey soul legacy of "Sweet Sticky Thing". Titles on the album include "Glad To Know You're Mine", "Angel", "Merry-Go-Round", "Don't Fight My Love", "Body Vibes" and "Ohio". LP, Vinyl record album

Ohio Players bounce back for this late 80s album – coming across with a leaner groove than before, and a style that's right up there with the best mainstream funk of the time! Most instrumentation is electric – plenty of beats and keyboards here – but the group still seem to hang onto the looser, freakier style they brought to their Mercury work of the 70s – a mode that's definitely updated here with more 80s aesthetics that run through the vocals and production, but still in a way that doesn't have the Players straying far from their roots! Fuzzy funk from some of the all-time greats – one of the key Westbound Records classics from the mighty Ohio Players! This album's got the Players working at their all-time best – a bit jazzy, with a more sophisticated undercurrent than some of their contemporaries – a righteous vibe that's light years ahead of the 45 crowd – with plenty of space on the album to try out a wide variety of ideas in their music! Junie Morrison did the arrangements for the record, and the album's a great blend of light and dark moments throughout – sometimes a sweet vocal, sometimes a heavy piano line – all wrapped up with a sense of focus, but still enough freedom to let the group do their thing! Features the incredible title cut "Ecstasy", the great instrumental "Not So Sad And Lonely", and the tracks "Do You Feel It", "Black Cat", "Sleep Talk", "Food Stamps Y'All", and "Short Change". About Time, 1979. New Copy ... $8.99 11.99
A crowning moment of achievement for trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah – a record that draws on his rich experience working with Sun Ra, but focuses the energy into a warmer, more spiritual jazz setting overall! The album's a lost treasure from the US scene of the late 70s – a perfect melding of jazz modes of the time, and one of those dates that somehow has all the players sounding even better than usual – really hitting a unique space together – one that's rhythmic, yet searching – free, yet structured – and always open to new ideas throughout! In addition to trumpet from Abdullah, the group also features vibes from Jay Hoggard, French horn from Vincent Chaney, cello from Muneer Abdul Fatah, bass from Jerome Hunter, and drums from Rashied Sinan. Hunter's bass is an especially moving force in the session – giving the album a warm, soulful current that really holds things together – and titles include "Song of Tenderness", "Eternal Spiraling Spirit", "Long Time Black", and "Life's Force". Brilliant work from composer/arranger/creator Joshua Abrams – one of the most creative figures to come out of the Chicago scene in the past couple decades – no hyperbole necessary! On Represencing Josh is largely working with the guimbri – the North African traditional string instrument – plus a bit of organ, harps, and bells – used sparely alongside the core instrument. The guimbri gives the record an earthy, traditional base – as Abrams reaches out to inspire a lager ensemble that includes Chad Taylor on drums and gong, Nicole Mitchell on flute, Michael Zerang on tambourine, Jeff Parker and Emmett Kelly on guitars, Tomeka Reid on cello, David Boykin on tenor sax, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – all familiar players, with whom Abrams has worked often – coming together here with a very spiritual vibe. Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1984. New Copy ... $16.99
An unusual date from tenorist George Adams – recorded right around the same time as his legendary records with Don Pullen, but instead a more unusual partnership with the great trumpeter Hannibal Marvin Peterson! The pairing is great – and both hornmen soar out and really get plenty of room to do their thing – in a mixture of hardbop energy and more spiritual currents, with help from John Scofield on guitar, Ron Burton on piano, Walter Schmocker on bass, and Allen Nelson on drums. The energy is maybe a bit more like some of Peterson's late 70s records than some of the Adams/Pullen material – and that quality makes the live date a nice standout in the catalog of both players. Titles include "Soul Brothers", "Do We Know Where We Are Going", "Melanie", "More Sightings", and "Don't Take Your Love From Me". CD

Soul Note (Italy), 1979. Very Good+ ... $11.99
A trashy cover, but a great little record – one that's filled with wonderfully sensitive sounds from the team of George Adams and Don Pullen – working here in some really relaxed, soulful territory! The album's got a laidback feel that's a nice change from some of the more cerebral modes of both players – almost a bit more spontaneous than some of their other recordings together, with a different sort of spirit on each track, and a style that slides easily between different modes of jazz. Adams plays tenor and flute, and sings on one track – Pullen's on acoustic piano, and other players include Cameron Brown on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. Titles include "Double Arc Jake", "Autumn Song", "Don't Lose Control", "Remember", and "Places & Faces". LP, Vinyl record album

Genius work from Pepper Adams – one of those players we sometimes forget about, then drop the needle on a record like this and fall in love with his music all over again! Adams blows baritone sax like nobody else – with a sensitivity that you'd normally hear on tenor, and a mix of modes that should have made him one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation – something that maybe didn't happen because of his unusual horn! Yet although big, there's nothing heavy about the way Pepper handles his horn – as you'll hear especially on the few ballads – and as usual for Adams, his choice of a group is great too – a sharp lineup with Walter Norris on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums. Given the personnel, the record's almost kind of a transition from Cannon's brief time with Miles Davis into his tighter more soul-inflected group to come – and Evans' piano provides an especially spacious sensibility here, one that marks the time spent with Miles nicely. AfriqueSoul Makossa ... CD
Mainstream/P-Vine (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $16.99
A killer album of Afro Funk – with a very unusual origin! In the wake of Manu Dibango's big hit (and some kind of failure to register the copyright), many many versions of "Soul Makossa" were recorded and released, some good, some bad. This album is a good example of that situation – kind of a quickie project issued by Mainstream Records to cash in on the hit – but it's also an amazing bit of lost funk, and a record that's lasted for years in the hearts of beatheads! The group's a studio combo headed by Richard Fritz – and includes funky drummer Paul Humphrey, organist Charles Kynard, and guitarist David T Walker – all players we can trust to keep things groovy. The record does include a version of "Soul Makossa" that's pretty great – but even better is the breakbeat classic "House Of The Rising Funk", apparently the same version of the track that was issued on a 45 under the name The Chubukos. Other nice ones include "Kissing My Love", "Hot Mud", "Get It", "Hot Doggin", and "Let Me Do My Thing". CD

Afro SoultetAfrodesia ... CD
Banyon/Luv N' Haight, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $5.99 15.98
The wildly diverse, heavily percussive global jazz, soul, and exotica inspired Afrodesia from the late 60s combo Afro Soultet – a crazy rare one, too! The group purportedly has roots in Texas, but incarnations of it were gigging around LA a bit earlier as Afro Latin Blues Quintet +1 and a bit later as Afro Latin Soultet. Here they play with boundless inspiration from around the globe. Afro Latin percussion and rhythms hold it all together, but they bring in strains of Latin soul, African rhythms, straighter jazz and madly percussive instrumental rock. Producer/composer/arranger/raconteur Jack Millman plays drums in the group as Johnny Kitchen, and other players include Joey Dubreau on vibes, Frank Morris on guitar and harmonica, Eddie Paris on drums, Dean Elliot on percussion, William Quinn on flute & sax, and Bill Collins on keys. Includes "Afrodesia", "Mozamba", "Soul Rockin'", "Afro Revolt", "Torrid Zone", "Oom Gowa", "Slave Traders", "Drumbouie", "Aphro Bugaloo", "Chocolate Drop", "Le Berber" and "Sand, Sun And Sea". CD

Blue Jack Jazz/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... About February 17, 2021
A definite home run from Dutch pianist Rob Agerbeek – a hip set recorded in 1971, and one that's done with a very soulful groove! The group's a quintet, and Rob really sparkles in this setting – pushing the players with a subtle skill that recalls Horace Silver at his Blue Note best – especially in the way that Agerbeek mixes upbeat grooving with more sensitive sounds on the set! Other players include Dick Vennik on tenor and flute, Willem Reinen on flugelhorn, Rob Langereis on bass, and Eric Ineke on drums – a really great group of players who fit toghether wonderfully here – pushing the grooves of the tunes strongly forward with warm energy, but also breaking out with some sharp solos of their own. Titles include the funky classic "The Chair Dance" – plus "Little Miss Dee", "Just Robbish", "Minor Rush", and "The Blue Countess". CD

A mindblower – and the kind of record we only come across once in a blue moon! Tony Aiken & Future 2000 were an obscure mid 70s group from New York – all players skilled in the burgeoning club scene of the time, but who also had their roots in Caribbean music – coming together for this unique record in a festive blend of early disco and funky styles! The record's got a great home-grown feel – a warm ensemble effort that's got equal parts soul and groove – and which bubbles over with personal touches that really make the tracks stand out from the pack. Includes the side-long jammer "Unity Sing It Shout It", plus the funky disco classic "Better Days", and the soulful cuts "She Loves Me", "Good Things", and "Time Tunnel". CD also features lots of bonus tracks too – "Jah Music", "Jah Music (dub)", "Doing Fine", "Doing Fine (dub)", "Skanking On The A Train", and "Holy Father". CD

Toshiko AkiyoshiKogun (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $18.99
Brilliantly bold work from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – an artist who's really coming into her own for the 70s – stepping out in a big band format that would win her a wide new audience on both sides of the Pacific! The album's one of the first to feature the ensemble co-led with husband Lew Tabackin – a group that features strong work from American players who include Dick Spencer and Gary Foster on alto saxes, Tabackin and Tom Peterson on tenor, Bill Perkins on baritone, Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets, and Charles Loper and Jim Sawyer on trombones. The horns are only part of the picture, though – as the inventive writing and arranging from Akiyoshi is what really makes the album great – a strong sense of painting with sound, while still keeping things swinging – really unlocking all the best elements that had been opened up for larger ensembles in the previous few years. The set features all original tracks that include "Kogun", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Elegy", and "Memory". CD

Mixing easy listening and funk is the kind of thing that's pulled off pretty well, or falls completely flat, and Jan makes it work here. A couple tracks feature lead vocals by Yvette Cason or Willie Dee, and players include Michael Brecker, Bunny Brunell, Howard Johnson and Neppie Noya. Hard-swinging big band material – with a heavy emphasis on drums! The album is a suite of six tracks – all written by either Manny Albam or Ernie Wilkins, both of whom arrange the groups on the set – really letting them open up nicely on the album's longish tracks. Manny and Ernie were two of the more soulful arrangers of their day – and they get some strong performances out of the groups, letting players like Conte Candoli on trumpet, Hal McKusick on alto, Al Cohn on tenor, and Freddie Green on guitar open up in longer tracks driven to intensity by some great drum work handled by the lesser-known (but excellent) Ted Sommer. Titles include "Skinning The Valves", "Dancers On Drums", "Bristling", and "The Octopus". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe AlbanyPortrait Of An Artist ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1982. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
A great portrait of an under-recorded artist – Joe Albany's last album ever, recorded for Elektra records during their early 80s run of straight jazz sides! The record's got a spare, personal quality that's similar to Albany's other late work – but it's a bit more professionally put together too – not slick or commercial, but recorded quite thoughtfully, with clearly a lot of care in getting all of Joe's charms through on the record. There's a tentativeness to his keyboard work that's great – a sort of hesitation, then quick move forward with surprising grace – balancing beautifully in ways that warm us to his music even more than before. Other players include Al Gafa on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the record really has a main focus on Albany's piano lines. Titles include "Ruby My Dear", "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry", "Autumn In New York", "They Say It's Wonderful", "For The Little Guy", and "Too Late Now". CD

Carmo/Far Out (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A wonderful album – one that takes us back to the early 70s sound of Hermeto, Airto, and Flora Purim! Hermeto Pascoal arrranged and produced the record, and it's based around the jazzy vocals of Brazilian singer Aleuda, who reminds us a bit of Flora in her early days, but with a tone that's a bit higher and sharper. The backing is performed by a crack group of Brazilian jazz and fusion players that includes Mauro Senise, Zeca Assumpcao, Robertinho Silva, and Hermeto himself – and the album feels like a rare lost session that might have been cut for Milestone during the heyday of the West Coast Latin scene of the mid 70s. Blujazz, 2008. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Amazing work from singer Dee Alexander – a wonderfully soulful album of jazz vocals, and one that we'd rank right up there with our favorite records by Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! Dee's a singer who's worked in Chicago for years, but we've honestly only begun to appreciate her talents of late – possibly because she's really hipped up her sound a lot over the years, picking up a range of spiritual, soulful influences that push her music to a whole new level – as you might have heard on her recent collaboration with IG Culture. The music on the set is wonderful too – work by Chicago players we know, but have never heard this strongly before – grooving in modal and soulful modes behind Dee's great vocals, with a lineup that includes Miguel De La Cerna and Michael Logan on piano, Harrison Bankhead on bass, and Leon Joyce on drums and percussion. Titles include versions of two tunes by AACM member Henry Huff – "Live" and "You & I" – plus the Alexander originals "Long Road Ahead", "Rossingnol", "Butterfly", and "C U On The Other Side". CD

This tenor giant gets better and better with each new album! Eric Alexander is one of our favorite new jazz artists of the past decade – still a relatively young player, but with a sound that's incredible, steeped in years of tradition, yet freely creative in his own unique way. His tenor solos on this set stand up to some of our favorite older work by players like Clifford Jordan or Sonny Rollins, and if anything, the backing may be some of the best he's ever received on record. Alexander's playing here with longtime friend and musical partner Harold Mabern – who's as sympathetic to Alexander's sound as he once was to that of Frank Strozier – and the other players in the group include trumpeter Nicholas Payton, John Webber, and Joe Farnsworth. Freddie Hubbard guests on two tracks – and while he sounds great, he's almost not needed – as the other players come together beautifully on all the other selections – hard-swinging, and expanding a sense of hardbop in ways that hearken back to a Jazz Messengers tradition, but with energy that's all their own. Delmark, 1972. Used ... $9.99
One of the best post-Paris live dates by the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – recorded right on their southside home turf in Chicago, as something of a homecoming after their years abroad! The performance is really one continuous piece, divided up into chapters – and it starts off with an intensity that's bolder than much of the group's previous recordings – an almost-free sort of sound that's quite raw, and which must have been a great way to announce their presence back on the Chicago scene. As the piece moves on, it slows a bit in pace, and opens up more in mood – but always has an edge that's quite distinct – almost free of some of the wit that marked the Ensemble's work from a few years before. The core lineup features Lester Bowie on trumpet and flugelhorn, Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman on saxes, Malachi Favors on bass, and Don Moye on drums and percussion – but as always, all players get their hands on plenty of other instruments during the performance – an array of horns, gongs, bells, whistles, bike horns, and more – all used to great effect! Sections of the work are titled "Duffvipels", "Checkmate", "Dautalty", and "Mata Kimasu". CD

This quality is emphasized nicely by the guitars of Steve Khan and John Abercrombie, and the electric piano and ring modulator of Ralph Towner – players who really know how to keep the right sort of space between the notes, which makes for a few funky moments – especially with core rhythms from Rick Laird on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Harry Wilkinson on percussion. An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". ✨✧ David AxelrodSongs Of Experience (with booklet) ... LP
Capitol/Now Again, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest albums ever by studio genius David Axelrod! The album's one of Axelrod's first on his own – cut for Capitol Records at a time when he was working with some of the label's biggest selling soul acts – like Cannonball Adderley and Lou Rawls – turning their already-successful sounds into super-hit material by adding some nice funky touches, and excellent baroque production. This album lets Axelrod fully explore his talents for larger studio arrangements and complex yet soulful instrumentation. The record is subtitled "an anthology of awareness after birth, based on the 18th century poems of William Blake" – and it features incredible arrangements conducted by Don Randi, played by a host of excellent LA jazz and studio players. The overall sound is spacey and dark, with nice touches of funk, and plenty of cool instrumental passages that have been sampled over the years by hip hoppers and other producers. Titles include "London", "The Fly", "The Human Abstract", "A Divine Image", and "The Sick Rose". Reissued with the original gatefold cover and everything! LP, Vinyl record album

Roy AyersIn The Dark (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/FTG, 1984. Used ... $11.99
Roy Ayers in a seductive mid 80s mode – his first for Columbia – and a record with some incredibly nice moments that blow away most of his contemporaries! The synth soul and drum machine era might seem like an odd fit for Roy's jazzy vibes, but it actually works really well here! You could argue that few players with a such profound jazz funk pedigree could pull off an 80s modern sound so succussfully – and we'd argue that Roy Ayers is indeed one of the few! If synths and programmed drums aren't your thing, this record is actually more heavily-weighted with laidback jazzy soul, with plenty of vibes and the usual warm sexy vocals from Roy. Includes the funky classic "Poo Poo La La", which has a great little monologue in it – plus "I Can't Help It", "Compadre", "Sexy, Sexy, Sexy", and "Love Is In The Feel". This 2012 FTG CD includes 3 bonus tracks: "In The Dark (7" Version)", "Poo Poo La La (Edit)" and "Love Is In The Feel (7" Version)". CD

Aim (Australia), 2001. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
A recent bit of work from Roy Ayers – but still plenty darn great, and proof that the vibes master hasn't faltered at all over the years! The set was initially released briefly by Roy in 2001, but is getting its proper debut here – and has Ayers working in a mostly instrumental mode that layers his live work on vibes over beats and more programmed rhythm tracks. The sound is plenty darn soulful – sweetly jazzy, deeply soulful, and filled with those unusual colors, tones, and shades that instantly mark the work as Roy's own – a unique approach to vibes that few other players have ever been able to match! Titles include "Drome", "Ears", "Steppin", "Wave", "Thick & Thin", "Perfection", "Afro", "Smoke", "Bags", and "Calm". CD

Albert AylerLove Cry ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... About January 20, 2021
Brilliant late work from Ayler – one of his last truly great albums! The session has none of the jazz-meets-other music feel of some of the other Impulse albums – and is more in the straight expressive style of the ESP recordings. Tracks are more reined in here – with some short themes that are almost a distillation of the freedom Ayler had been expressing for a few years, summed up beautifully in tunes that have a plaintive cry, filled with as much soul and love as Ayler could muster into his horn! Players include Don Ayler, Cal Cobbs, Alan Silva, and Milford Graves – and titles include "Zion Hill", "Love Flower", "Love Cry", "Ghosts", "Omega", and "Dancing Flowers". CD also includes some extra bonus material! CD

Albert AylerSomething Different – The First Recordings Vol 1 & 2 ... CD
Go Bop (Germany), 1963. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
Early work by avant saxophone genius Albert Ayler – and very very striking! The setting is very spare, with only bass and drums backing Ayler up – and the way the album is mixed, Ayler's solos dominate the tracks in a way that isn't always the case with some of the more group-driven later work. His tone is amazing even in this early date of 1962 – and he completely blows away the other two players on the set, drummer Sune Spangberg and bassist Torbjorn Hulcrantz. The set was first recorded by the small Swedish label Bird Notes, and it's the beginning of a longtime love affair that Swedish modernists had with Ayler's tone and playing – a love affair that runs up to the current avant garde that includes Mats Gustafsson. Includes a mindblowing reworking of "I'll Remember April", plus versions of "Rollins Tune", "Good Bait", "Moanin", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Tune Up", and Ayler's own "Free". CD

Chet BakerChet – Ballads By Chet Baker ... LP
Riverside/Craft, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... On March 5, 2021
One of a handful of late 50s albums that Chet Baker recorded for Riverside – all of which are some of his last great 50s work in the studio, before a shift in the 60s to a wider-ranging approach to his music! The style here is definitely in the "classic" Baker mode set down for Pacific Jazz – but a bit more fleshed out by the other players in the set – who seem to push a bit more personality into the tunes, and not just let Chet's trumpet dominate. The sound is soft and gentle – as you'd expect from the title – and other players include Bill Evans, Pepper Adams, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, Connie Kay and Philly Joe Jones – all bringing a bit of a New York undercurrent to the west coast Baker solo style. Titles include "How High the Moon", "It Never Entered My Mind", "If You Could See Me Now", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Time On My Hands", and "You And The Night And Music". Chet BakerChet Baker In New York ... LP
Riverside/Craft, 1958. New Copy (reissue)... On March 5, 2021
Quite a great session for Chet Baker – one that has him recording in New York, with a hip lineup that includes some incredibly soulful players! The tunes on the set feature Chet in either quartet or quintet formation – working with Johnny Griffin on tenor, Al Haig on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Tracks are longish, and the sound is much more in the mode of Riverside at the time, than the sound of Chet's earlier Pacific Jazz records – and Chet holds his own nicely in this company, giving a hint of the style to come in a few more years. Titles include "Fair Weather", "Hotel 49", "When Lights Are Low", "Solar", and "Blue Thoughts". LP, Vinyl record album

Pacific Jazz, 1956. Used ... $11.99
An excellent session that stands as one of both players' strongest from the time! Baker's really opening up here, moving more into that hardbop mode of the late 50s – and Pepper's already hit his stride here – with the pair of them working in a group that includes Phil Urso on tenor, Carl Perkins on piano, Curtis Counce on bass, and Larry Marable on drums. The whole set's got that west coast cool crossover to hardbop feel that you'd get on Baker's Chet Baker And Crew set – thanks to fire from the rhythm section, and a sharp edge from Urso. Tracks include "Minor Yours", "Tynan Time", "For Miles & Miles", "CTA", and "Picture Of Heath". CD

✨✧ Billy BangDistinction Without A Difference (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
Billy Bang has always been one of the most incredible players on his instrument – a jazz violinist who could take the strings into freely creative territory, yet also somehow manage to swing – a balance that nobody ever seemed to manage as well as Bang! And while Billy's work in groups is always wonderful, the strengths of his genius maybe come through even more in a solo setting like this – as Bang uses the violin in ways that are completely unheard of, even in jazz work of the decade before – but also while somehow holding to an inherent core that always makes his music make immediate sense, even to the most casual listener. The album's a true testament to the genius that Bang brought to jazz violin – and why we still love him on the instrument more than anyone else. Titles include "Theme For Masters", "Sometime Later", "Improvisation On Sweet Space", and "Loweski". This great edition comes in a gatefold LP-styled cover – almost like a mini version of the original record released by Hat Hut – with bonus tracks that include "Fiddle In The Floodlight", "Subway Ride With Giuseppi Logan", "Echo Vamp", "Prana", and "A Pebble Is A Small Rock". An amazing record that's as powerful as the political message of the title – the hippest record ever cut by Amiri Baraka, and that's saying a heck of a lot! Baraka delivers a long and complex set of poetic reflections on the state of Black America, spiritual awakening, and political redemption – set to musical backings that shift from funky, to jazz, to avant, and back again. Players on the set include Gary Bartz, Lonnie Liston Smith, Idris Muhammad, and Reggie Workman – and there's a host of additional players, percussionists, and vocalists that join Amiri in the delivery of his message. Titles include "Answers In Progress", "Peace In Place", "Bad News For Your Highness", "Was Gon Happen", "All In The Street", "Pamoja Tutashinda", and "Pull The Covers Off". Gloria BarnesUptown (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Maple/P-Vine (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the few rare albums on the Maple label – a 70s imprint that's known for some incredible funk and soul! Despite the title, the set's a record that sounds a lot more down-home than uptown – thanks to hard-wailing vocals from Gloria Barnes herself, and a nicely rough-edged quality to the instrumentation overall – supposedly handled by Lee Moses and The Ohio Players – the latter of whom wrote a few of the songs too! The album's one of the few on Maple – and in a way, it's almost a female soul counterpart to the Lee Moses record on the same label – done in a similar mix of rootsy modes and east coast indie soul – occasionally sweet at points, but mostly deep soul overall. Titles include "Gotta Get Away", "I Found Myself", "Old Before My Time", "I'll Go All The Way", "She Wants A Stand In", and "You Don't Mean It". CD

Light In The Attic, 1971. Used ... $24.99
A soul record we'd put up there with some of our favorites produced in Chicago during the early 70s – a gospel album from Pastor TL Barrett, but one that's gone on to legendary status among funk and soul collectors over the years! Barrett works here with his Youth For Christ Choir, of Mt. Zion Baptist Church – a south side ensemble that's filled with genuine spirit and passion, aimed towards lofty ideals – but set up with some deep secular soul production touches and instrumentation that keep things razor sharp throughout! The album was cut at the affordable Sound Market Studio – but behind the soaring, spirited lead and chorus vocal arrangements are players supervised by Chess Records sax player and arranger Gene Barge – with other Chess players Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch on the sessions too. Raw drums, grooving organ, and incredible bass lines lay the foundation, but it's the voices that really shine on this completely wonderful, totally essential set! Titles include "Like A Ship", "Wonderful", "It's Me O Lord", "Ever Since", "Nobody Knows", "Joyful Noice", "Medley/Dr. Watts Hymn & The Disciples Prayer" and "Blessed Quietness". CD
