It's a smooth smooth Christmas from The Platters – heard here in their wonderful 1963 Christmas album! The set follows in the style of the group's late 50s hits – but with a sound that's a bit more tuned to the season, and not as much in the late nite smoochy mode of some of their more famous ballads. The harmonies on the set are great – and the album's a real precursor to the smoother group soul Holiday albums of the 70s and 80s. Quite different than The Platters' 50s pop recordings – much more in a soul mode, with a heavier sound that almost sounds like work you'd hear on Stax or Brunswick from the same period. Gone are the sweetly perfect vocals of tracks like "Only You", and in their place are some harder rocking soul sounds – a good change for the group. Two vocal group classics by the Corsairs – an excellent group graced by the unique lead vocals of Jay Bird Uzzel! "Smoky Places" is a sad and dreamy ode to the places two secret lovers have to meet – but "Thinkin" is the real winner here. At the first listen, the track's got a Platters-esque sound, but as it goes on, there's lots of weird sound effects and vocal tricks – almost in a Jive Bombers mode, with Jay Bird's voice making plenty of odd noises, beeps, grunts, and things like that under the lyrics! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Hardly the kind of music you'd want to keep in the basement – as the set's overflowing with classic soul from the 60s – especially the kind of underground nuggets we love so much! If we had to pick a style, we might say that the collection's heavy on Northern Soul rompers from the American indie scene way beyond Detroit – but there's also lots of other tasty flavors on here too, including some special west coast numbers and early funk tracks that really give the whole thing a great sense of variety – while still keeping to the upbeat, lively rhythms that make the set so great!
