VariousCoolsville Vol 2 – Ten Inches Of Mean Sleaze & Kookie Far Out Bongo Blasters (10 inch LP) ... LP
Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $18.99
Hipster sounds from the pre-hippie years – tracks that were either recorded by beatniks, or which have a very cool beat-themed style to them – all pulled together from a range of rare recordings at the end of the 50s and the start of the 60s! The sound here is maybe what you'd guess from the very groovy cover – a bit of jazz, and a bit of wit as well – tunes that poke a bit of fun at the intellectual underground, especially as it collides with the more mainstream sound of rock and roll – served up here on a dozen fab platters that sound even better in the company of each other! The album's divided up into a "mean side" and "bongo beatin side" – and titles include "Jet Black" by The Shadows, "Bongo Beating Beatnik" by Joe Hall & The Corvettes, "Goatee" by Joey Warren, "Theme From Von Hutch" by Jerry Madison & The Spacemen, "The Toast" by The Champs, "Money Money" by Benny Joy, "Gargantua" by Piltdown Men, and "Back Beat No 1" by The Rondels. ✨✧ VariousTrash Can Records Vol 3 – The Devil's Pad – One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure (10 inch LP) ... LP
Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Get these records out of the trash and on to your turntable – because they're way too good to throw away! In fact, they're so good they're great – the kind of sweet little platters that were so ahead of their time, they were probably never appreciated back in the day – and which often have a kind of genre-hopping, category-stomping quality that makes them ripe for rediscovery all these many years later! As with other collections on the Stag-O-Lee label, there's a real love for the obscure going on here – and a fair bit of the tunes mix together raunchy rock or R&B instrumentation with lots of Latin or exotic currents in the rhythms. Titles on volume 3 include "Tequila" by Didier Lapayrere, "Voo Doo Dolly" by Jimmie Hombs & The Invictas, "Limbo" by Westwoods, "Temptation" by Maria Elena & The Twilights, "The Devil's Pad" by Paul Leader & The HB Barnum's Circats, "Trap Of Love" by The Premiers, "Kookie's Mad Pad" by Ed Kookie Byrnes, "Theme From Von Hutch" by Jerry Madison & The Space Men, and "Cool Man" by Jerry Hanson. ✨✧ Linval ThompsonLinval Presents – Encounters Pac Man (2CD pressing) ... CD
Greensleeves, 1982. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Pac Man has never looked so menacing before – but the cover image might be fitting, given the way the dub versions here rips into the cuts and chomps them down to their barest essence – with the help of the Roots Radics band! The album's a key illustration of that new generation of dub unleashed by Scientist and some of his contemporaries – versions that go way way past the originals, and are often so abstracted, they work together more as dark splatters of noise, with just a slight Kingston undercurrent to tie them to familiar reggae modes. Great stuff throughout – a record that's definitely as compelling as it's cover – and with titles that include "Under Surveillance", "Prince's Wrath", "Space Invaders Regroup", "World Cup Squad Lick Their Wounds", "Vampire Initiative", "Malicious Intent", "The Dark Secret Of The Box", "SOS", "Man Trap", and "Look Out Behind You". This great version also includes a bonus CD with original vocal versions by Eek-A-Mouse, Dennis Brown, Linval Thompson, The Viceroys and more. CD
