VariousLegendary Wild Rockers 2 – A Collection Of Rare Rockabilly & Surf From The 50s & Early 60s – Compiled By Keb Darge & Little Edith ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Wild sounds from the early years of rock and roll – a heady brew of guitar-heavy instrumentals, soulful stompers, and more – all pulled from the hinterland of the rare 45 underground! The tunes here go way past familiar oldies – and even past the sorts of sounds that usually show up on surf compilations – because, as he does with funk records, Keb Darge has a great ear for the unusual – the sorts of odd platters that have always show up in his best record digging and DJ gigs – laid out perfectly here in a really overstuffed collection! Keb turns in nice notes on each track – and titles include "Honey Bun" by Larry Donn, "Ghost Train" by The Swanks, "I Don't Wanna Leave" by Deacon & The Rock & Rollers, "Gorilla" by The Shandells, "She's The One That Got It" by Allen Page, "Madness" by Rhythm Rockers, "Woodpecker Rock" by The Braves, "Let's Dance" by The Excels, "Bad Bad Boy" by Bobby Lollar, and "Lobo Jones" by Jackie Gotroe. VariousLet's Go Trippin – Classic Tracks From The Surf & Hot Rod Era ... CD
Dot/Ace (UK), Mid 1960s. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
A range of raunchy surf and hot rod tunes – all pulled from the vaults of Dot Records, a surprisingly big source for this sort of music in the 60s! Although Dot's LP releases were often the stuff of softer pop fare, their singles division pressed plenty of hip platters – including a wide range of very groovy records that were right at the forefront of harder styles in the early 60s. A few tracks here are vocals, but most are instrumentals – and although you're bound to recognize a few of the bigger names, there's also a good array of more obscure material here too – all wrapped up with the usual loving care we've come to expect from Ace Records. 30 tracks in all – including "Showbiz" and "Chicago Green" by The Surfaris, "Boss" and "Boss Strikes Back" by The Rumblers, "Let's Go Trippin" by Milt Rogers, "Linda's Tune" by The Rangeros, "Milky Way" and "Three Surfer Boys" by Gary Usher & The Usherettes, "Beach Girl" by Pat Boone, "Samoa" by The Beachcombers, "Ballad Of Bonneville" by Don Brandon, "Beyond" and "Space Probe" by The Chantays, "Power Shift" by The Competitors, and "Surfer's Stomp" by Vaughn Monroe. CD

✨✧ CorsairsSmoky Places/Thinkin (Tuff pressing) ... 7-inch
Tuff, Early 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Two vocal group classics by the Corsairs – an excellent group graced by the unique lead vocals of Jay Bird Uzzel! "Smoky Places" is a sad and dreamy ode to the places two secret lovers have to meet – but "Thinkin" is the real winner here. At the first listen, the track's got a Platters-esque sound, but as it goes on, there's lots of weird sound effects and vocal tricks – almost in a Jive Bombers mode, with Jay Bird's voice making plenty of odd noises, beeps, grunts, and things like that under the lyrics! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Yellow label pressing. Labels have light ring wear.)

✨✧ VariousIndispensible Doo Wop Groups 1934 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 1960s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Not just a collection of doo wop recordings, but a huge set that instead traces the development of vocal harmony styles from the 30s through the early 60s – starting at a time when jazz-based groups were adding hip new modes to older styles of singing together, through an era when R&B really helped the vocals take flight, to a period when street corner vocalizing was giving birth to a generation of fantastic young acts! The set features a massive 72 tracks over the course of the 3CDs within, all in chronological order, with notes in English and French – and work from groups who include The Nutmegs, Velvets, Keith & Enid, Pharoahs, Robins, Platters, Chips, Earls, Regents, Marcels, Orioles, Golden Gate Jubilee Quintet, Dominoes, Ravens, Ink Spots, Delta Rhythm Boys, Mellows, Bobbettes, Miracles, and many others! ✨✧ ScientistScientist Encounters Pac Man ... LP
Greensleeves, 1982. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Pac Man has never looked so menacing before – but the cover image might be fitting, given the way that Scientist rips into the cuts and chomps them down to their barest essence – before building up massive dubs with the help of the Roots Radics band! The album's a key illustration of that new generation of dub unleashed by Scientist and some of his contemporaries – versions that go way way past the originals, and are often so abstracted, they work together more as dark splatters of noise, with just a slight Kingston undercurrent to tie them to familiar reggae modes. Great stuff throughout – a record that's definitely as compelling as it's cover – and with titles that include "Under Surveillance", "Prince's Wrath", "Space Invaders Regroup", "World Cup Squad Lick Their Wounds", "Vampire Initiative", "Malicious Intent", "The Dark Secret Of The Box", "SOS", "Man Trap", and "Look Out Behind You". LP, Vinyl record album
