More of an EP than an LP, at least by today's standards. B-52sWild Planet (clear & blue splatter vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
They may look goofy on the cover, but the young B-52s are incredible here – working with this spare sense of power that almost makes us think that we didn't need most of what happened in rock and roll during the 70s – given the way these guys can distill a mood or moment down to just a few deft instrumental turns and offbeat lyrics! The record's not punk, but it's also not new wave either – at least in the conventional way – and there's a darkness here that goes way past any simple cliches you may have associated with the band – a haunting feel that transcends most of what they were ever capable of in later years. We might even say this one tops their debut – and titles include "Party Out Of Bounds", "Dirty Back Road", "Runnin Around", "Give Me Back My Man", "Private Idaho", "Devil In My Car", "Quiche Lorraine", "Strobe Light" and "53 Miles West Of Venus". ✨✧ Public EnemyFear Of A Black Planet ... LP
Def Jam, 1990. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
The mindblowing third album from Public Enemy – their second straight up masterpiece in a row – a more densely-layered effort than anything they'd down before or since! Agitprop lyricism laced with soundbite samples from myriad sources that get the point over nearly as fiecely as Chuck's rhymes, and the densest, most dizzying Bomb Squad production ever laid down. Amazing! Decades later, it's as exciting as ever. Includes classics like "Fight The Power", Burn Hollywood Burn", "Welcome To The Terrordome", "Power To The People", "911 Is A Joke" "Revolutionary Generation", "Can't Do Nuttin For Ya Man", "Reggie Jax", "War At 33 1/3" and more. Infracom (Germany), 2022. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 34.99
It's hard to believe that the German Infracom label has been around for 30 years – maybe because the label was so future-thinking at the start, they helped set the tone for so much music to come! And if you're not hip to Infracom, the collection's a chance to dig the label in all its glory – as the set is filled with cosmic soul and jazzy club tracks that still stand as some of the hippest work to come from overseas in the past few decades – music that we've dug for years at Dusty Groove, served up in a package that really does justice to the label's legacy! Titles include "Freedom" by Gabriele Poso, "Hot Pot" by Mop Mop, "Who's Sorry Now" by Nekta, "Smoke & Regret" by Rime, "The Accessory" by Taxi, "Driver (Joash rmx)" by Matthias Vogt Trio, "Herbie's Delight" by Valique, "Love Is A State Of Mind" by Jhelisa, "Celebration Of Life" by Woodland Conclave, "You Can Dig" by Metropolitan Jazz Affair, "Tears" by Re:Jazz, "Calling" by Aromabar, "La Seule Fleur Dans Le Jardin" by Kosma, and "Something's Missing" by Dublex. ✨✧ Charles EarlandLeaving This Planet ... LP
Prestige, 1974. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from organist Charles Earland – a double-length set that's filled with spiritual, soaring grooves! The style here is a perfect blend of the rougher soul jazz of Earland's roots with some of the spacier styles of his later recordings – served up in a sound that's majestic and powerful, almost with an indie soul jazz sort of vibe overall! There's an immediate urgency to most numbers that's totally undeniable – a lesson learned from the electric experiments of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, but fused down into a core essence – then let loose on a soaring journey to the heavens. Earland plays Hammond, moog, clavinet, and Arp on the set – and other players include Joe Henderson on tenor, Dave Hubbard on alto and soprano sax, Eddie Henderson and Freddie Hubbard on trumpets, Marc Elf on guitar, Harvey Mason on drums, and the incredible Patrick Gleeson on synthesizers – bringing in a spacey edge to the record that's really amazing! Rudy Copeland sings a wonderful vocal on the title cut, "Leaving This Planet" – and all other instrumental cuts include "Red Clay", "Warp Factor 9", "Tyner", "Van Jay", "Never Ending Melody", "Mason's Galaxy", and "Asteroid". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousDestination Forbidden Planet ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cool space songs in all sorts of styles – raw rockers, swinging vocal numbers, and even some cool instrumentals that have all sorts of weird sound effects and spacey modes – brought together here in a wonderfully overstuffed package! We've loved the other releases in the Destination series from Bear Family – but somehow the addition of postwar space age modes really sends things over the top here – as the tunes explode with all sorts of weird instrumental, lyrical, and production touches – even when the music comes from bigger-name artists! There's a few movie trailers thrown in the mix, but most of the set is from rare singles – and includes 37 tracks in all – including "The Screamin Meemies From Planet X" by Merv Griffin, "Destination Twenty One Hundred & Sixty Five" by The Cues, "Spaceship Boogie" by Winifred Atwell, "Planet Named Desire" by Billy Mize, "Rock-et" by Teacho & His Students, "Detomic Orbit" by Dave & The Detomics, "Red Planet Rock" by Don Lang & His Frantic Five, "Moon Rocket" by Dean Hightower, "Guitars In Space" by Billy Mure, "Visitor From Space" by Dick Jacobs, "Flying Saucer" by Freddy Sunder, "The Thing" by Bill Buchanan, and "Jupiter C" by Pat & The Satellites. ✨✧ Benny Bailey/Sal Nistico/Dusko GoykovichEgo Recordings Vol 1 (Just For Fun/East Of Isar/Serenade To A Planet/After A Long Time) (4CD set) ... CD
Ego/Organic (Germany), Late 70s. Used 4CD ... Out Of Stock
An essential batch of music – four overlooked gems from the German Ego label of the late 70s – one of which is a stone classic that we've treasured for decades! All albums here are incredible – but our absolute favorite is Benny Bailey's Serenade To A Planet – a set that we think is one of the greatest jazz records ever! By the time of this 1976 release, trumpeter Benny Bailey had already had quite a history – working with Quincy Jones in his early years, and recording for MPS with the likes of Nathan Davis and the Clark Boland Big Band, as well as some of the best other players in Europe. This set's Benny's masterpiece – a soulful batch of tunes that feels like it was lifted from the catalog of Strata East, but which is played by a quintet that features Europeans Ferdinand Povel on tenor, Joe Haider on piano, and Isla Eckinger on bass – as well as American Kenny Clarke on drums. The vibe is perfect – and the group's harmoniously searching with a strong modal groove on nearly every track. Titles include "Aquarian Moods", "Neptunis", "Little B", and "The Kicker". East Of Isar is something of a follow-up to that date – done by Bailey with tenorist Sal Nistico – in a wonderful group that also includes Joe Haider on piano, Isla Eckinger on bass, and Billie Brooks on drums! The Haider/Eckinger team are known from other Bailey sessions in Europe – all of which are fantastic – and they perform extremely well here, too. Tracks are long, with a wonderfully searching quality – and titles include "Blues For Trane", "Joyful Sadness", and "East Of Isar". Then, the set steps into Just For Fun – another great album with a very similar groove – thanks to rhythm from Joe Haider on piano, Gunter Lenz on bass, and Joe Nay on drums. The group's backing up tenorist Sal Nistico – usually a sleepy talent, but a sparkling one on this session, thanks to a lively lyrical rhythm section, and some great compositions by Joe Haider. The whole thing sparkles with the kind of imagination and energy that keeps you tracking down sessions on MPS and other European labels – and with tracks like "Beautiful Black Casanova", "Do Not Make Circles", and "7787", you won't be disappointed in this one! And last by not least is After A Long Time – from trumpeter Dusko Goykovich – a rare gem that's in a similar format to Benny Bailey's classic Serenade To A Planet! Dusko stretches out beautifully on the record – in a group that features Joe Haider on piano, Roman Schwaller on tenor, Isla Eckinger on bass, and Alvin Queen on drums. Titles include "Emotionally", "After A Long Time", "Summit", "Mountain Witch", and "The Hunt Is On". CD

✨✧ Louis & Bebe BarronForbidden Planet – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Small Planet/Crescendo, 1956. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A postwar sci fi soundtrack, but one that also marks a really important step in electronic music too – as the film features a whole host of amazing constructions from the duo of Louis and Bebe Barron! The pair built a lot of their own early instruments, and it sounds like they're using some theremin here too – all very primitive, but in the best way possible – as there's a stark quality to the analogue sounds here that still holds up all these many years later – every bit as great as creations to come from Tom Dissevelt, Kid Baltan, and all those other giants to come! tracks range from less than a minute to a few minutes each – and titles include "Flurry of Dust", "The Landing", "Invisible Monster Approaches", "Deceleration", "Battle With Invisible Monster", "The Homecoming", and "Ancient Krell Music". Fat Beats, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Brownout magic turns towards the world of Public Enemy this time around – in a sweet little record that serves up Latin funk instrumentals of PE classics! The music is hardly hip hop – apart from a few turntable scratches and vocal samples – and instead, the groove is deep deep funk, with plenty of Latin elements thrown into the mix – served up with a super-tight blast of horns, lots of riffing guitar, and plenty of heavy percussion! Titles include instrumental remakes of "911 Is A Joke", "Prophets Of Rage", "Fight The Power", "Louder Than A Bomb", "Shut Em Down", "Don't Believe The Hype", and "Welcome To The Terrordome". The massive debut of The Chemical Brothers – certainly not the first great album-oriented effort from crafted by DJs, but it certainly is one of the first to breakthrough on this scale, both critically and commercially – influencing a generation to come! They bring such diverse influences into the fold here, from bombastic Bomb Squad produced hip hop, to hardhitting, though gleaming electro, to funky rock guitar samples, atmospheric bits of vocal courtesy Beth Orton and Tim Burgess – a masterful set worthy of it's classic status. Pretty amazing how graceful it has aged, too! Includes "Leave Home", "In Dust We Trust", "Song To The Siren", "F*** Up Beats", "Chemical Beats", "Life Is Sweet", "Chico's Groove", "One To Many Mornings", "Alive Alone" and more. CD

Vanguard, 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An interesting set from Coryell, one that seems to be a contract closer in all but the playing, as it was his last at Vnguard. The set consists of two different sessions, with some material recorded by The Eleventh House, very much in the bag of their other recordings, with nice funky riffing and a restrained approach to the fusion sound of the early 70s on "Cover Girl" and "Rocks". Two other lenhthy numbers seem to be pulled from the Spaces sessions, with a supergroup featuring John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous and Billy Cobham, and feature the group in a more heavily jamming mode on Larry young's "Tyrone" and the title track. The remaining cut, "The Eyes Of Love" is a Coryell solo piece. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sun RaVisits Planet Earth/Interstellar Low Ways ... CD
Saturn/Evidence, Late 50s. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 lost classics by Sun Ra on one CD! Visits Planet Earth features music that was recorded by The Arkestra in Chicago in 1957 and 1958. Some of the tracks are from the same session as the Sound Of Joy LP, and a few others were from sessions later in the year. Ra plays piano and "solar piano", and the group's got some added percussion and tympani. Along with the usual suspects, James Spaulding also sits in with the group on a few tracks, playing both alto and flute. Titles include "Eve", "Overtones Of China", "Two Tones", and "El Viktor". Interstellar Low Ways is a record that features material was recorded in 1959 and 1960, but unissued until the mid 60's. Ra plays piano, chimes, and gong, and the tracks have a nice laid back spacey feel, with some ensemble vocals chanted by the group. Ronnie Boykins also plays the space gong on one cut, which sounds very nice. Cuts include "Somewhere In Space", "Space Loneliness", "Space Aura", and "Interplanetary Music". CD

MCA/Blue Thumb (Japan), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mad bit of funk and jazz from Ben Sidran – much more tripped-out than his later work! Ben's got a great bunch of musicians on the album – with either Tony Williams or "funky drummer" Clyde Stubblefield on drums, and Phil Upchurch on bass, laying down a nice dark groove on the best cuts – often with an offbeat funky sound that's made the record a favorite for crate-diggers for years. Ben's on piano, grooving in a number of different hipster modes – from LA sleezy to New Orleans soulful – and his vocals, as always, are compelling and catchy. The set includes the nice long groover "Now I Live (And Now My Life Is Done)", a monster track with a great slow groove that's been sampled a number of times over the years – and other cuts include "Full Compass", "Play The Piano", and "Think Twice". Never-issued material from Australian experimentalist Steve Maxwell Von Braund – best known for his work in the space rock band Cybotron, and working here in relatively similar territory on tracks from a host of lost tapes from the late 70s! Steve plays Arp, Mini Korg, and other keyboards – plus a bit of alto sax too – all with a cool sound that's nicely processed, and maybe a more down to earth take on some of the modes from the German scene at the start of the 70s! Most of these tracks are tuneful and rhythmic, and occasionally feature contributions from additional musicians – but still in a way that's nice and lean, and which maybe is almost more like some of the space funk and club recordings that were coming out of Paris and Rome. Titles include "Abbey Moor", "The Floor Before", "Detective", "Goldhawk", and "Unorganization". LP, Vinyl record album

Ace (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Producer Shel Talmy is maybe best known for his work behind some of the bigger rock artists on the UK scene of the 60s – but he also really had a great way with a gal singer too – as you'll hear in this killer collection of female pop singles from the time! The tunes here groove like the best from big names like Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, or Cilla Black – with a similar focus of strong lead singer amidst some very groovy arrangements – but the songs are much more obscure overall, and stand strongly as a rich dip into the world of female British pop of the 60s, even if you don't care at all about Shel's legacy! Fortunately, we're huge fans of both – and completely adore this well-done collection – which has two dozen tracks we never would have heard otherwise, along with very detailed notes and plenty of images of the ladies within. Titles include a great version of the Brian Wilson tune "Guess I'm Dumb" by Dani Sheridan – plus "No More Love" by Liz Shelly, "Gotta Get Away" by Van Lenton, "Cruel Way To Be" by Debbie Sharron, "Surrender" by Perpetual Langley, "A Strange World" by Stevie Holly, "Stay At Home" by The Orchids, "This Heart Is Not For Sale" by Margo & The Marvettes, "Tar & Cement" by Liz Shelly, A Shoulder To Cry On" by Christine Holmes, and "A Ladies Man (alt version)" by Colette & The Bandits. But as you'll hear on the record, the style here is tied to neither at all – as it offers up a blisteringly rhythm progression of sounds – as urban as some of the Afro-Futurist work from Detroit, but even more stark and spare as well. Planet E, 2022. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Some of the most future-sounding work we've ever heard from percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett – an artist who's known best for his global-styled work of previous decades, but who's very much here in the more electronic space of contemporary Detroit! You can still hear plenty of percussion in the mix, but it's also blended with the sorts of elements that we're more likely to hear on other releases on the Planet E label – some great post-techno sounds that are very much at the best level of the Motor City underground – continually experimental and exploratory, and a great fit for Francisco's inherent sense of rhythm. Titles include "Tenere Sahara", "Booom Mix", "Open Window Into Outer Space", "Jazzy Jit", "Electric Worlds", and "Fire & Water". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ KokomoTo Be Cool – The Rehearsal Sessions ... CD
Another Planet (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
Pre-Columbia work from Kokomo – a set of material recorded live in the studio before their great run of funky soul albums in the 70s! The group's a bit looser here than on their famous albums – but in a way that's arguably even more funky overall – as they seem to hit a jamming mode, and relax nicely into the tunes before the vocals come into the mix. There's plenty of great guitar and keyboard work to set most titles up – and on some of the longer tracks, there's plenty of solo space too. Mel Collins plays sax and flute on the set, and titles include a cover of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", plus "Angel", "I Can Understand It", "Yes We Can Can", "New Morning", "Mother's Prayer", "Freedom For The Stallion", and "Friend Of Mine". A huge crossover moment for The Pointer Sisters – thanks to their mega-hit version of Bruce Springsteen's "Fire", which helped sell about a gazillion copies of the record! The sound of that hit pretty much sums up the overall style of the album – as the trio delivers a number of smooth mainstream takes on 70s numbers by other soul and rock artists – all produced with a tight, guitar-driven groove by Richard Perry. Titles include "Fire", "Everybody Is A Star", "Hypnotized", "Come & Get Your Love", "Happiness", "Angry Eyes", and "Echoes Of Love" – plus the trio's take on the Steely Dan cut "Dirty Work", a personal favorite of ours! A very cool set from sound library enigma Teisco – and one that's a lot more tune-based than some of his other work! The vibe here is very much in an early 80s electro mode – lots of processed guitar over drum machine rhythms, often with this wobbly vibrating sound that's pretty darn cool – spooky at the same time that it's catchy, with a quality that almost feels like some of the more experimental Factory Records groups trying to come up with jingles for TV commercials – but in a really weird way! Titles include "Zompalompax", "Atmosfera Neutra", "Artico", "Mutazione", "Plane Beta", "I Foletti", and "Suffritticosa". CD

Very cool electronic sound library work – heavy on moog and guitar with effects – and spinning out at a level that reminds us a lot of the coolest spacey electronics from the French scene of the 70s! The tunes are all put together by Teisco, from instrumentation that's relatively spare, but nicely processed to create this full, fluttering quality that we really love – almost as if the instruments are going through a vocoder, which is used a few times on the record for voice. There's a nicely "squishy" quality to the music, even when there's a nice groove going on – and titles include "Sfida Sul Mare", "Vaticano", "Raggi Solari", "Lamentazione", and "Industria Meridionale". Planet Arts, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of avant jazz from the legendary Creative Music Workshop in Woodstock – plus a handful of equally great globally-oriented projects too! The 3CD package is overflowing with great music from the vaults of Creative Arts – and is worth it enough for the 2CDs' worth of jazz material, which really capture that moment when the loft jazz scene of New York was reaching out with even wider aspirations – to influence generations of jazz around the globe in years to come. CD1 features some incredible small group tracks – including a duet between Anthony Braxton on reeds and Marilyn Crispell on piano; a trio with Kalaparusha on reeds, John Betsch on drums, and Juma Sultan on bass; a piano duet between Frederic Rzewksi and Karl Berger; a quintet led by altoist Lee Konitz with Berger on vibes and piano; and a trio with Paul Motian on drums, David Izenzon on bass, and Charles Brackeen on reeds. CD2 features larger ensembles, equally great – one led by Don Cherry on flutes, trumpets, and piano – with Collin Walcott on sitar and Nana Vasconcelos on percussion; another group led by Baikida Carroll on trumpet and featuring Marilyn Crispell on piano; and the last a group with Gerry Hemmingway on drums, plus Don Davis on alto and Crispell on piano. CD2 features work that's in a similar vein, but with more world influences – including one track with Paulo Moura on reeds and Trilok Gurtu on tabla; another with Walcott on sitar, Vasconcelos on percussion, and Gurtu on tabla; another with Karl Berger on vibes and Aiyb Dieng on percussion; and one more with Berger on balafon, Gurtu on tabla, Vasconcelos on berimbau, and Ismet Siral and Steve Gorn on flutes. A really deep dive into the lost legacy of Franklin Boukaka – a singer who really helped revolutionize music in the Congo during the 60s, recording a heck of a lot of great tracks before a brutal murder took him from the planet in the early 70s! At some level, the work here is to Congolese music what some of the more playful township songs were to the South African scene – a new style, but one that also had a really universal sort of appeal – contemporary and catchy, yet still nice and lean, and never overproduced in any sort of European way! This rare 1969 concert from Germany is a key addition to that legacy of important Brown performances – and features the alto saxophonist in a very cool group with Ed Kroeger on trombone, blowing all these soulful lines next to Brown's alto – very spiritual throughout, at a level that really makes us which we knew more about his work. The later years of Dennis Coffey at Westbound Records – tunes that show a bit of a move away from the rougher funk of his roots, but which are still filled with plenty of sharp-edged work on guitar! Coffey's groove here is more in the club vein that Westbound hit in the mid 70s – upbeat, uptempo rhythms that drew strongly on the label's earlier legacy in funk – but pushed a groove more towards the popular disco styles of the time! Yet Coffey's tunes are never throwaway disco – and from the perspective of these many decades later, they're really just fast funk numbers with a bit of strings – still heavy on tightly snapping rhythms, and filled with loads of beautiful guitar lines from Dennis. This hip package from Ace goes out of its way to focus on the funkiest bits from these years – and the set features 15 titles that include "Wild Child", "Live Wire", "Some Like It Hot", "Free Spirit", "Back Home", "Finger Lickin Good (7" version)", "Sweet Taste Of Sin", "Calling Planet Earth (12" version)", "High On Love", "Gimme That Funk (7" version)", and "Our Love Goes On Forever". One of the greatest recordings ever made by John Coltrane in his later years – a record that has him stepping off into really new territory that would have really been something, had he stayed on the planet long enough to make more recordings like this! The vibe is very experimental – almost predating loft jazz work to come in the 70s – as Coltrane works here just alongside the drums of Rashied Ali – a fantastic match for his mighty talents, as the pair work together with a whole new extrapolation of the spiritual territory that had been unlocked on more famous records of the time. The material didn't come out until years after Coltrane's death – at a time when others were already recording this way – but the set maybe blows away some of the best material of this nature from the 70s. The set was co-produced by Caetano and Moreno Veloso (who also play on the session as well), and it's really got Gal getting back to the creative styles of the Tropicalia years – yet also filtered through the more contemporary modes that Moreno's been using in his 21st Century projects too! Angel plays clarinet, keyboards, and sings throughout – effortlessly shifting between those elements in a group that includes tenor, keyboards, electronics, bass, and lots of drums and percussion – bursting out with an effortless blend of larger conception and improvisation – at a level that may well have Dawid emerging as one of the few folks from Chicago that could ever hope to match the legacy of Sun Ra! The sound is a great illustration of the genre-crossing modes that have been going on in both scenes – as Alabaster's music is definitely beyond easy description or definition, and comes across in a way that's as personal as it is collaborative – since DePlume works with a whole host of different musicians on the recordings, mixing flute, percussion, strings, keyboards, and other elements together in a way that follows a spiritual legacy from the more spacey side of Alice Coltrane, to the west coast experiments of Carlos Nino and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, to the changes taking place on the planet at present. Some of the lushest, most melodic material from Four Tet yet – straight up beautiful for the most part – and a pretty strong contender for his best to date! He's blending electronics and more natural sounds in ways that aren't out of character given his past work, but the title is wholly appropriate. Up to this point, he's so fully embraced creative evolution, it's gratifying to hear a Four Tet record in which he brings in bits of the styles he's worked on past efforts with a new energy and fresh life. Great work from a really overlooked group – one who have the skills of a prog act, but some of the sensitivity of a more folksy combo – which maybe is why they were such a perfect fit for the unusual sound of the Dawn label in the UK! These guys clearly have chops – the keyboard and guitar solos certainly testify to that – but they also space things out with some gentler, more personal moments – and here are also maybe a bit more hook-heavy than in the past, with a sense of almost crossing over with a few key cuts on the set. 20/20/20, 1989. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 23.99
The second of 3 great albums by in the short but massively influential career of Galaxie 500 – the members of whom would go on the pretty successful careers in other groups, but it's hard to imagine how those records can be better remembered than gems like On Fire! Dean Wareham had really become a master of hypnotic, just spacey enough guitar sounds by the time this record hit, with Dean & Naomi's plaintive vocals ekeing raw emotions out of the songs like no other group working at the time. Titles include "Blue Thunder", "Tell Me", "Snowstorm", "Strange", "When Will You Come Home", "Decomposing Trees", ""Leave The Planet", "Plastic Bird" and "Isn't It A Pity" – plus the bonus tracks "Victory Garden", "Ceremony" and "Cold Night". GebarvaterliIm Tal Der Emmen ... LP
Brutkasten/Long Hair (France), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
An all-instrumental album from this lost German group of the late 70s – a combo who are definitely rock, but who play with some of the freer, more open modes of a jazz group too – maybe working here in a style that could be called prog fusion, or fusion prog! The lineup features work on flute, saxes, and trombone – mixed with some very cool organ and other keyboard work – used in ways that create all these spacey, snakey tones that lead the horns onward into the mix – while some of the core energy from the guitar, bass, and drums keeps things firmly grounded on the planet! This can maybe be heard to best effect on the very cool, almost funky title track "Im Tal Der Emmen" – and other titles include "Schubi Dubi Kong", "Ich Bin Der Postillion D'Amour Aber Meine Uhr Geht Vuur", "Der Don Juan Hat Seine Turnschuh An" and "Uck Zuruckspulen". Benny GolsonNew Time, New 'Tet ... CD
Concord, 2009. Used ... $4.99
Benny Golson's one of those players who never lets us down – and here, into his 80th year in on the planet, the man's still burning strongly and soulfully! The set's got a very solid, put-together sort of sound – the quality that's always made us seek out Golson albums of any vintage, amazed at the depth of feeling and richness of creativity that Benny can bring to even a simple sort of date. This one's definitely a cut above, though – self-produced by Golson, and featuring a lineup with Eddie Henderson on trumpet and flugelhorn, Steve Davis on trombone, Mike LeDonne on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Carl Allen on drums – all rock-solid players who help Benny flesh out his sound beautifully here, reaching some nice sensitive points at times, then sliding back into warmly soulful grooves. Al Jarreau guests with vocals on a version of "Whisper Not" – and other titles include "Verdi's Voice", "Uptown Afterburn", "Gypsy Jingle Jangle", "From Dream To Dream", "Grove's Groove", "L'Adieu", and "Love Me In A Special Way". ✨✧ Herbie HancockHead Hunters ... LP
Columbia, 1973. Very Good+ ... $39.99
A seminal jazz funk session of the 70s – Herbie Hancock's legendary meeting with The Headhunters, and a killer batch of tunes that really gave the combo their name! Herbie's playing a wide range of keys here – including Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and Arp – but almost even better is the work from the rest of the group – including Bennie Maupin on soprano and tenor sax, Paul Jackson on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion! The earthier elements of the rhythm players really keep Herbie on track – bringing him back to the planet from previous trips into space, and helping him hit an all-solid, all-righteous funky groove! Titles include a great remake of "Watermelon Man", the classic original recording of "Chameleon", and the cuts "Vein Melter" and "Sly" – all nice and long! LP, Vinyl record album

Tubby HayesComplete Hopbine '69 ... CD
Jazz In Britain (UK), 1969. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 28.99
There's been a number of live performances by tenor great Tubby Hayes at the Hopbine club over the years – but this is the first-ever appearance of this 1969 concert – a great addition to Tubby's too-small catalog in these later years! The tracks are long and extremely vibrant – and as with Dexter Gordon or Sonny Rollins, both players that we'd instantly put Hayes next to – the live setting seems to bring out even more imagination in his tenor than some of his studio dates – especially in these later years, when Hayes was really reaching out with his sound, before departing our planet all too soon. The recording quality is excellent – the material comes from the archive of Ron Mathewson –a nd other quartet members include Mick Pyne on piano, Ron Matthewson on bass, and Spike Wells on drums. Titles include "Mainly For The Don", "For Members Only", "Off The Wagon", "Where Am I Going", "For Heaven's Sake", "Walkin", and "Vierd Blues". CD

Tubby HayesFree Flight ... CD
Jazz In Britain (UK), 1972. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 26.99
British tenor giant Tubby Hayes left the planet all too soon – passing away at the age of 38 in 1973 – but right up to the end, he continued to blow away most of his contemporaries – as you'll hear from this set of unreleased live material from 1972! The recording is from a time when Hayes was actually coming back out of a bit of time away from the scene – recuperating from heart issues that were soon to take away his life – and the period is almost a return to the basics of Tubby's breakout recordings of the late 50s – when he emerged as a tenor soloist to rival American greats like Sonny Rollins or Dexter Gordon! You can definitely hear that quality here, as Tubbs takes on some older standards, plus a few originals – and spins out these wonderful long solos that never fair for imagination or soulful expression – and which also feature some occasional great moments on flute too. The group is a very familiar one – Mike Pyne on piano, Tony Levin on drums, and Ron Mathewson on pass – who happened to record the proceedings over the course of two nights at Ronnie Scotts. Titles include long takes on "Lady Celia", "Trane's Blues", "Someday My Prince Will Come", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Trenton Place", and "I Thought About You" – plus two shorter incomplete tracks, "Seven Steps To Heaven" and "Sienna Red". Pierre HenryPierre Henry Collector ... CD

A mindblowing journey in sound – a dip into the archives of French composer Pierre Henry – the postwar master of electronics and musique concrete, and an artist who was still very active in the final years of his life! The material here was all either recorded or reworked in Henry's own studio during the last few years of his time on the planet – with some tracks that revisit important early compositions, but with a different sonic perspective – mixed with a few new pieces that really continue that wellspring of recording that Henry was doing from the mid 90s onward! There's a wonderful array of sonic elements throughout – plenty of electronics, compelling tape and analog sounds, and lots more that we're hard pressed to figure out – in the best tradition of Pierre's music. Titles include "Variance (remix de Variations)", "Rock Electronique/La Reine Verte", "Prologue/Messe Pour Le Temps Present", "Danse/Mouvement Rythme Etude", "Final/Utopia Hip Hop", "Tokyo 2002", "Machine Danse", and "Tunne De La Mort/Le Fil De La Vie". Phyllis HymanDeliver The Love – The Phyllis Hyman Anthology ... CD
Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 25.99
A beautiful collection of work from the legendary Phyllis Hyman – a set that not only includes her groundbreaking records as a solo act, but also a big range of her famous collaborations with jazz artists who include Norman Connors, Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner, and Grover Washington! Hyman is a singer unlike anyone else – an artist who was raised equally in jazz and soul, then found a way to mix the best of both with a new sort of sophistication that made her one of the most important female soul talents to show the way forward during the 80s – an artist who was always equal parts class and care, soul and style – and one who departed our planet all too soon. Fortunately, even after a short time of recording, Phyllis already left us an amazing legacy of music – as you'll hear in this set of overstuffed gems – a 33 track package that includes "Sacred Kind Of Love", "Baby", "You Know How To Love Me", "Under Your Spell", "Sleep On It", "Loving You Losing You (12" mix)", "Deliver The Love", "Can't We Fall In Love Again", "Let Somebody Love You", "Gonna Make Changes", "Black & Blue", "Somewhere In My Lifetime", "I'll Be Around", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "No One Can Love You More (7" version)", "Just Imagine", "Love Surrounds Us Everywhere", "In A Sentimental Mood", "In Search Of My Heart", "I Don't Want To Lose You", "Why Did You Turn Me On", "Riding The Tiger (single)", and "Tonight You & Me (disco version)". Compost (Germany), 2004. Used ... $4.99 6.99
An incredible album from Intuit – not only for the solid work by the group itself, but even more so for the wonderful range of guest stars that includes Doug Carn, Flora Purim, Airto, and Andy Bey! There's a cosmic vibe here that's really amazing – dipping back into the headiest days of 70s groove, and coming up with a sound that's steeped in tradition, yet brushed off with a fresh approach that's very much in keeping with the Compost Records sound. The album's one of the most organic and soulful we've ever heard from Compost – and Intuit really manage to get some incredible work out of their guest stars – especially Bey, who sounds better here than we've heard in years, with a tone and approach that rivals his 70s work with Horace Silver and Gary Bartz! The groove is a mix of soul jazz, Brazilian rhythms, and some sweet modern electric work – all percolating together with a sound that's so good, you'll wonder why nobody ever thought of it before! Titles include "Crianca Das Ondas", "Western Sunrise", "Fenytola", "A New Beginning", "Planet Birth", "O Preguicoso", "Wewa", and "Bubblin Jam". CD

Keith JarrettBordeux Concert ... LP
ECM (Germany), 2022. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $45.99 49.98
Beautiful late life improvisations from Keith Jarrett – a concert from 2016 that shows that the format he unleashed in the 70s was still amazingly alive and well – yet also nicely matured a bit too! Instead of one album-length track, the set features a number of shorter passages, 13 in all – all still improvised by Jarrett with that instant creativity he can bring to the piano, but operating maybe more as a set of smaller poems than one epic work – really beautiful sounds that are masterpieces in subtle emotion – the kind of pianistic work that just about nobody else on the planet can do this well, especially after all the many years that Jarrett has had to perfect his craft! We're huge fans of the pianist in this format, and own just about every other album of solo improvisation he ever recorded – but take it from us, there's still something very unique and special about this set – a bittersweet farewell to one of the piano greats of our time. Heavenly Sweetness/Pura Vida (France), 2022. New Copy ... $16.99
Album tracks and some great remixes of recent cuts from Kweku Of Ghana – all of which mix his wonderful vocals with a clubby approach that still allows for plenty of the acoustic elements to shine through in the mix! "No Way" is served up here on an album version – then gets two nicely different remixes, one from Village Cuts, one from Poirer. The album version of "Shida" here has lots of great percussion and drums at the core, and great saxophone work from Henry Fowler – all elements that stand alongside the remix work from Captain Planet in a really great way! The set's finished up with the very catchy "Ebenezer (Aroop Roy rmx)". 12-inch, Vinyl record
