An essential batch of music – four overlooked gems from the German Ego label of the late 70s – one of which is a stone classic that we've treasured for decades! All albums here are incredible – but our absolute favorite is Benny Bailey's Serenade To A Planet – a set that we think is one of the greatest jazz records ever! By the time of this 1976 release, trumpeter Benny Bailey had already had quite a history – working with Quincy Jones in his early years, and recording for MPS with the likes of Nathan Davis and the Clark Boland Big Band, as well as some of the best other players in Europe. This set's Benny's masterpiece – a soulful batch of tunes that feels like it was lifted from the catalog of Strata East, but which is played by a quintet that features Europeans Ferdinand Povel on tenor, Joe Haider on piano, and Isla Eckinger on bass – as well as American Kenny Clarke on drums. The vibe is perfect – and the group's harmoniously searching with a strong modal groove on nearly every track. Titles include "Aquarian Moods", "Neptunis", "Little B", and "The Kicker". East Of Isar is something of a follow-up to that date – done by Bailey with tenorist Sal Nistico – in a wonderful group that also includes Joe Haider on piano, Isla Eckinger on bass, and Billie Brooks on drums! The Haider/Eckinger team are known from other Bailey sessions in Europe – all of which are fantastic – and they perform extremely well here, too. Tracks are long, with a wonderfully searching quality – and titles include "Blues For Trane", "Joyful Sadness", and "East Of Isar". Then, the set steps into Just For Fun – another great album with a very similar groove – thanks to rhythm from Joe Haider on piano, Gunter Lenz on bass, and Joe Nay on drums. The group's backing up tenorist Sal Nistico – usually a sleepy talent, but a sparkling one on this session, thanks to a lively lyrical rhythm section, and some great compositions by Joe Haider. The whole thing sparkles with the kind of imagination and energy that keeps you tracking down sessions on MPS and other European labels – and with tracks like "Beautiful Black Casanova", "Do Not Make Circles", and "7787", you won't be disappointed in this one! And last by not least is After A Long Time – from trumpeter Dusko Goykovich – a rare gem that's in a similar format to Benny Bailey's classic Serenade To A Planet! Dusko stretches out beautifully on the record – in a group that features Joe Haider on piano, Roman Schwaller on tenor, Isla Eckinger on bass, and Alvin Queen on drums. A postwar sci fi soundtrack, but one that also marks a really important step in electronic music too – as the film features a whole host of amazing constructions from the duo of Louis and Bebe Barron! The massive debut of The Chemical Brothers – certainly not the first great album-oriented effort from crafted by DJs, but it certainly is one of the first to breakthrough on this scale, both critically and commercially – influencing a generation to come! They bring such diverse influences into the fold here, from bombastic Bomb Squad produced hip hop, to hardhitting, though gleaming electro, to funky rock guitar samples, atmospheric bits of vocal courtesy Beth Orton and Tim Burgess – a masterful set worthy of it's classic status. Pretty amazing how graceful it has aged, too! An interesting set from Coryell, one that seems to be a contract closer in all but the playing, as it was his last at Vnguard. The set consists of two different sessions, with some material recorded by The Eleventh House, very much in the bag of their other recordings, with nice funky riffing and a restrained approach to the fusion sound of the early 70s on "Cover Girl" and "Rocks". Two other lenhthy numbers seem to be pulled from the Spaces sessions, with a supergroup featuring John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous and Billy Cobham, and feature the group in a more heavily jamming mode on Larry young's "Tyrone" and the title track. 2 lost classics by Sun Ra on one CD! Visits Planet Earth features music that was recorded by The Arkestra in Chicago in 1957 and 1958. Some of the tracks are from the same session as the Sound Of Joy LP, and a few others were from sessions later in the year. Ra plays piano and "solar piano", and the group's got some added percussion and tympani. Along with the usual suspects, James Spaulding also sits in with the group on a few tracks, playing both alto and flute. Titles include "Eve", "Overtones Of China", "Two Tones", and "El Viktor". Interstellar Low Ways is a record that features material was recorded in 1959 and 1960, but unissued until the mid 60's. Ra plays piano, chimes, and gong, and the tracks have a nice laid back spacey feel, with some ensemble vocals chanted by the group. Ronnie Boykins also plays the space gong on one cut, which sounds very nice. Cuts include "Somewhere In Space", "Space Loneliness", "Space Aura", and "Interplanetary Music". CD

A mad bit of funk and jazz from Ben Sidran – much more tripped-out than his later work! Ben's got a great bunch of musicians on the album – with either Tony Williams or "funky drummer" Clyde Stubblefield on drums, and Phil Upchurch on bass, laying down a nice dark groove on the best cuts – often with an offbeat funky sound that's made the record a favorite for crate-diggers for years. Ben's on piano, grooving in a number of different hipster modes – from LA sleezy to New Orleans soulful – and his vocals, as always, are compelling and catchy. The set includes the nice long groover "Now I Live (And Now My Life Is Done)", a monster track with a great slow groove that's been sampled a number of times over the years – and other cuts include "Full Compass", "Play The Piano", and "Think Twice". Never-issued material from Australian experimentalist Steve Maxwell Von Braund – best known for his work in the space rock band Cybotron, and working here in relatively similar territory on tracks from a host of lost tapes from the late 70s! Steve plays Arp, Mini Korg, and other keyboards – plus a bit of alto sax too – all with a cool sound that's nicely processed, and maybe a more down to earth take on some of the modes from the German scene at the start of the 70s! Most of these tracks are tuneful and rhythmic, and occasionally feature contributions from additional musicians – but still in a way that's nice and lean, and which maybe is almost more like some of the space funk and club recordings that were coming out of Paris and Rome. Producer Shel Talmy is maybe best known for his work behind some of the bigger rock artists on the UK scene of the 60s – but he also really had a great way with a gal singer too – as you'll hear in this killer collection of female pop singles from the time! The tunes here groove like the best from big names like Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, or Cilla Black – with a similar focus of strong lead singer amidst some very groovy arrangements – but the songs are much more obscure overall, and stand strongly as a rich dip into the world of female British pop of the 60s, even if you don't care at all about Shel's legacy! Fortunately, we're huge fans of both – and completely adore this well-done collection – which has two dozen tracks we never would have heard otherwise, along with very detailed notes and plenty of images of the ladies within. The feel here is light and lively – Blossom's vocals dancing with some nice small combo backing, performed by a group that includes Jay Berliner on guitar and Grady Tate on some occasional backup vocals. He's blending electronics and more natural sounds in ways that aren't out of character given his past work, but the title is wholly appropriate. Up to this point, he's so fully embraced creative evolution, it's gratifying to hear a Four Tet record in which he brings in bits of the styles he's worked on past efforts with a new energy and fresh life. It'll roll from almost beatless mixes of electronic atmosphere and natural sounds on one track, to beats-centric and spacey on the next, but it gels all the way through, all parts of a hypnotic whole. Great work from a really overlooked group – one who have the skills of a prog act, but some of the sensitivity of a more folksy combo – which maybe is why they were such a perfect fit for the unusual sound of the Dawn label in the UK! These guys clearly have chops – the keyboard and guitar solos certainly testify to that – but they also space things out with some gentler, more personal moments – and here are also maybe a bit more hook-heavy than in the past, with a sense of almost crossing over with a few key cuts on the set. One of the catchiest numbers here is the great "Janet Planet", which has really cool production from Ian McDonald, who brings out all the best elements in the tune – and other titles include "Gormenghast", "Misty Morning Way", "Sheba's Song", "Mystery Might", and "Why". The second of 3 great albums by in the short but massively influential career of Galaxie 500 – the members of whom would go on the pretty successful careers in other groups, but it's hard to imagine how those records can be better remembered than gems like On Fire! Dean Wareham had really become a master of hypnotic, just spacey enough guitar sounds by the time this record hit, with Dean & Naomi's plaintive vocals ekeing raw emotions out of the songs like no other group working at the time. Titles include "Blue Thunder", "Tell Me", "Snowstorm", "Strange", "When Will You Come Home", "Decomposing Trees", ""Leave The Planet", "Plastic Bird" and "Isn't It A Pity" – plus the bonus tracks "Victory Garden", "Ceremony" and "Cold Night". An all-instrumental album from this lost German group of the late 70s – a combo who are definitely rock, but who play with some of the freer, more open modes of a jazz group too – maybe working here in a style that could be called prog fusion, or fusion prog! The lineup features work on flute, saxes, and trombone – mixed with some very cool organ and other keyboard work – used in ways that create all these spacey, snakey tones that lead the horns onward into the mix – while some of the core energy from the guitar, bass, and drums keeps things firmly grounded on the planet! This can maybe be heard to best effect on the very cool, almost funky title track "Im Tal Der Emmen" – and other titles include "Schubi Dubi Kong", "Ich Bin Der Postillion D'Amour Aber Meine Uhr Geht Vuur", "Der Don Juan Hat Seine Turnschuh An" and "Uck Zuruckspulen". Benny Golson's one of those players who never lets us down – and here, into his 80th year in on the planet, the man's still burning strongly and soulfully! The set's got a very solid, put-together sort of sound – the quality that's always made us seek out Golson albums of any vintage, amazed at the depth of feeling and richness of creativity that Benny can bring to even a simple sort of date. This one's definitely a cut above, though – self-produced by Golson, and featuring a lineup with Eddie Henderson on trumpet and flugelhorn, Steve Davis on trombone, Mike LeDonne on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Carl Allen on drums – all rock-solid players who help Benny flesh out his sound beautifully here, reaching some nice sensitive points at times, then sliding back into warmly soulful grooves. There's been a number of live performances by tenor great Tubby Hayes at the Hopbine club over the years – but this is the first-ever appearance of this 1969 concert – a great addition to Tubby's too-small catalog in these later years! The tracks are long and extremely vibrant – and as with Dexter Gordon or Sonny Rollins, both players that we'd instantly put Hayes next to – the live setting seems to bring out even more imagination in his tenor than some of his studio dates – especially in these later years, when Hayes was really reaching out with his sound, before departing our planet all too soon. The recording quality is excellent – the material comes from the archive of Ron Mathewson –a nd other quartet members include Mick Pyne on piano, Ron Matthewson on bass, and Spike Wells on drums. British tenor giant Tubby Hayes left the planet all too soon – passing away at the age of 38 in 1973 – but right up to the end, he continued to blow away most of his contemporaries – as you'll hear from this set of unreleased live material from 1972! The recording is from a time when Hayes was actually coming back out of a bit of time away from the scene – recuperating from heart issues that were soon to take away his life – and the period is almost a return to the basics of Tubby's breakout recordings of the late 50s – when he emerged as a tenor soloist to rival American greats like Sonny Rollins or Dexter Gordon! You can definitely hear that quality here, as Tubbs takes on some older standards, plus a few originals – and spins out these wonderful long solos that never fair for imagination or soulful expression – and which also feature some occasional great moments on flute too. The group is a very familiar one – Mike Pyne on piano, Tony Levin on drums, and Ron Mathewson on pass – who happened to record the proceedings over the course of two nights at Ronnie Scotts. An incredible album from Intuit – not only for the solid work by the group itself, but even more so for the wonderful range of guest stars that includes Doug Carn, Flora Purim, Airto, and Andy Bey! There's a cosmic vibe here that's really amazing – dipping back into the headiest days of 70s groove, and coming up with a sound that's steeped in tradition, yet brushed off with a fresh approach that's very much in keeping with the Compost Records sound. The album's one of the most organic and soulful we've ever heard from Compost – and Intuit really manage to get some incredible work out of their guest stars – especially Bey, who sounds better here than we've heard in years, with a tone and approach that rivals his 70s work with Horace Silver and Gary Bartz! The groove is a mix of soul jazz, Brazilian rhythms, and some sweet modern electric work – all percolating together with a sound that's so good, you'll wonder why nobody ever thought of it before! Beautiful late life improvisations from Keith Jarrett – a concert from 2016 that shows that the format he unleashed in the 70s was still amazingly alive and well – yet also nicely matured a bit too! Instead of one album-length track, the set features a number of shorter passages, 13 in all – all still improvised by Jarrett with that instant creativity he can bring to the piano, but operating maybe more as a set of smaller poems than one epic work – really beautiful sounds that are masterpieces in subtle emotion – the kind of pianistic work that just about nobody else on the planet can do this well, especially after all the many years that Jarrett has had to perfect his craft! We're huge fans of the pianist in this format, and own just about every other album of solo improvisation he ever recorded – but take it from us, there's still something very unique and special about this set – a bittersweet farewell to one of the piano greats of our time. Album tracks and some great remixes of recent cuts from Kweku Of Ghana – all of which mix his wonderful vocals with a clubby approach that still allows for plenty of the acoustic elements to shine through in the mix! "No Way" is served up here on an album version – then gets two nicely different remixes, one from Village Cuts, one from Poirer. The album version of "Shida" here has lots of great percussion and drums at the core, and great saxophone work from Henry Fowler – all elements that stand alongside the remix work from Captain Planet in a really great way!
