PiranhaHeaded In The Right Direction (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Amazon South/P-Vine (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $26.99
Bassy funk from the early 80s southern scene – the only album we've ever seen from Piranha, and a gem of a tight little set! The groove here is roughly in the mode of some of the better-known northern club groups in the post-disco years – crafted with lots of boogie bass on the bottom and tight rhythms throughout the set. But there's also a style that's a bit more in the ensemble funk mode here too – one that still keeps most of the instrumentation acoustic, and which has a bit less keyboards and electric percussion than other boogie-era work. Titles include "Funk-a-sol", "One Sided Love", "Let's Get It Back Together", "Good Time Lady", "Headed In The Right Direction", and "Let Your Feelings Show". CD

✨✧ Fumio KarashimaPiranha (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Why Not/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredibly soulful set of piano tracks – very much in the best tradition of work by George Cables or Joe Bonner, both of whom also recorded for the Why Not label at the same time! Japanese pianist Fumio Karashima has this fantastically rhythmic approach to the keys of the piano – not funky, but this magical flow that's sometimes modal, sometimes more in his own groove – spun out over some beautifully long tracks on the set! The pianist is working here with drummer Jimmy Hopps and bassist Isao Suzuki – and Hopps' light, lyrical touch on the kit (a bit like Billy Higgins at his best) is a perfect foil for Karashima's stretched-out piano lines – darkly modal, with a searching soulful quality that's proof that the Why Not label was one of the best proponents of the post-Coltrane sound of the 70s! Titles include "Little Island", "Blue Three", "Piranha", and "Lament". CD

Stella ChiwesheAmbuya (180 gram pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
Piranha (Germany), Late 80s. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
Classic work from Stella Chiweshe – a set that gave mbira player Stella Chiweshe much wider exposure than some of her previous records, and a nicely bold sound to match! Stella sings lead vocals, and handles her instrument with amazing dexterity – and also uses a few other percussion instruments too – alongside addition mbira, two marimbas, bass, and drums – almost always moving at a nicely rhythmic clip that really pushes the music forward! The album's never too overproduced – still nicely shy of some of the crossover modes of the growing world music generation – but it does have a fuller quality than some of Chiweshe's earliest music, in part because she's an even more powerful vocalist. Titles include "Njuzu", "Chachimurenga", "Kassahwa", "Sarura Wako", "Chipindura", and "Mugomba". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download with 4 bonus tracks!)

✨✧ ArtISt Alhousseini Anivolla & Girum MezmurAfropentatonism ... CD
Piranha (Germany), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great blend of Saharan and Ethiopian guitar styles – the former played by Alhousseini Anivolla, the latter by Girum Mezmur – working together here in a set of intertwining solos and nicely snakey grooves! There's a really seductive feel to the record, right from the start – and although Alhousseini sings a bit, the main attraction is the guitars – used here in ways that really break from more familiar Tuareg modes, and which seem to inspire a new sort of flexibility of expression, as both players really reach out on their instruments! There's a bit of added percussion, mandolin, and krar on the record – but things are nicely spare overall, on tunes that include "Toumast Enkere", "Isouwad", "Awash/Ammalele", "Asalam", and "Algher". Freddi Henchi & The SoulsettersCrown Princes Of Funk – The Last Set (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Wind Hit, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 16.98
Fantastic funk from Freddi Henchi & The Soulsetters – an incredible group who've got an energy level to rival Sly & The Family Stone at their best – but with a deeper groove that seems to pick up a bit of Hendrix energy in the mix, then deliver the whole thing with the rawness of a funky 45! The collection is a real treasure – rare singles issued on a number of different labels, brought together with full notes that tell the group's story – all in a package that's as beautiful as the music! This is the sort of set that makes you love soul and funk reissues – and it's overflowing with 21 tracks that include "Under Pressure", "Piranha", "Mr Funky", "I Like Funky Music", "Popcorn Baby", "Come Down", "Biscuits & Buttermilk", and "Soul Train". Also features a bonus video from 1975! CD

VariousMr Bongo Record Club – Vol 1 ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Mr Bongo really goes back to its roots here – and returns to the kind of rare global gems that first made us fall in love with the label in the first place! Over 20 years ago, Mr Bongo were one of the key global forces in opening up people's ears to the sounds of funk and soul from around the globe – digging up rare nuggets from out of the way places that might have echoed American styles, but turned them on their ear – or the kinds of cuts that were completely unique, but which could stand next to the kind of funky 45s that were being sampled for hip hop! This collection brings together some of the best cuts that continue that legacy – some rare singles, some obscure European tracks, and lots of others you never would have discovered otherwise – with titles that include "Deixa A Tristeza", "Piranha" by Alipio Martins, "Seara De Oxala" by Barbosa, "Mathar" by Dave Pike Set, "Freak" by Tappa Zukie, "Mama Hot Daddy Cool" by Big Youth, "Fish & Funjee" by Lantei Lamptey, "Karam Bani" by Buari, "Handsome Boy (parts 1 & 2)" by The Rwenzoris, "He's Forever" by King James Version, "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver" by Cortez, and "Can't Live Without You" by Connie Laverne. ✨✧ VariousScenery Of Japanese Jazz 2 ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic landscape of Japanese jazz – served up here on a host of tracks that are mostly from small overseas labels in the 70s – and which represent the tremendous flowering of Japanese jazz musicians in the decade! The set is especially strong on contributions from pianists – but these aren't trio tracks rehashing older standards – as many of the numbers also feature excellent saxophonists, and almost all the tracks here are originals – written in that spirited style that makes the newly-confident generation of jazz such a change from the one before. Titles include "7 Time" by Toshinori Kondo, "Straight No Chaser" by Shigeo Maruyama, "Karifua" by Shoji Aketagawa, "Intrepid Fox" by Kazumi Odagiri, "Soul Tomato" by Miyasaka Takashi, "Merry Go Round" by Mabumi Yamaguchi, "Waltz For Baby" by Yasuhiro Kohno, "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Tarashima with Harold Land, "Piranha" by Fumio Karashima, and "Dead Letter" by Tohru Aizawa.
