An overdue look at the 50s work of Charlie Gracie – a singer who could rock when he wanted, but also step back into a mellower pop ballad too – both of which are featured strongly on this set! Charlie cut a lot of material in Philly, at a time when the city was a real laboratory for new styles of music in the postwar years – and the production on most of these cuts is nice and lean, with great use of echo and other early pop styles to bring the most out of Gracie's surprisingly strong vocal style. There's occasional echoes of hillbilly and rockabilly modes at times – and the CD features material from the Cameo, Cadillac, and 20th Century labels – with 32 tracks in all, including the titles "Cool Baby", "Ninety Nine Ways", "Say What You Mean", "Wandering Eyes", "Crazy Girl", "Rock The Joint", "Butterfly", "Guitar Boogie", "Fabulous", "I Love You So Much It Hurts", and "A Heart Like A Rock". Four fantastic records from a time when Johnny Mathis was really evolving his sound! On Me & Mrs Jones, Johnny Mathis takes on the sophisticated soul modes of the 70s, and also adds in a few other styles too – on an album that shows just how much the singer had changed in nearly 20 years of recording – sometimes shaped by all those other artists he'd inspired along the way! The title version of the Billy Paul classic "Me & Mrs Jones" is superb – maybe worth the price of the record alone, and perfect for the mature Mathis approach – and Johnny shines equally well on the album's blend of other 70s tunes, arranged by D'Arneill Pershing with a bit of help from Larry Muhoberac. Titles include "Summer Breeze", "Sweet Surrender", "Corner Of The Sky", "Remember", "You're A Lady", "If I Could Reach You", "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight", "Soul & Inspiration/Just Once In My Life", and "Me & Mrs Jones". Johnny takes on a mix of sweet & tender and more melancholy tunes on Killing Me Softly, showing a surer hand at making a batch of then contemporary hits his own much more successfully than other veteran pop vocalists of his generation. On I'm Coming Home, Johnny Mathis gets a great new sound – thanks to Philly production and arrangements from the great Thom Bell! Thom had quite a hand in the songs, too – as almost all numbers were written by the team of Bell and Linda Creed – really sensitive songwriters who've got an adult, mature approach to the music – one that still respects Mathis' roots in other vocal territory, but which also gives him a bit more soulful depth, too. The setting is wonderful, and the record's a real standout in Johnny's 70s career – one that helped reignite interest in the singer at a time when so many folks had left him behind. Titles include "I'm Coming Home", "Foolish", "I'm Stone In Love With You", "A Baby's Born", "Life Is A Song Worth Singing", "I Just Wanted To Be Me", and a classic version of "Stop Look & Listen To Your Heart". Feelings is a prime 70s Columbia era Mathis gem, with production by Jack Gold and this time out, arrangements by Gene Page that mix tender hearted intimacy and lightly sweeping touches as sweetly as can be. A sweet set of tracks from The Tymes – a great turning point in their career, and a record that's maybe their strongest from the RCA years! By the time of the set, the group was really rolling along – fitted with 2 new female members, and coming together with a harmonic strength that shows their many years in recording – carried off here by some nice Philly mainstream touches, courtesy of arranger Richie Rome! George Williams' lead vocals are only slightly out front in the set, making it mostly a real group effort – and titles include "The Reader", "Traces Of You", "It's So Good To Be Waking Up With You", "Love's Illusion", "All You Ever Wanted To Know About", "Savannah Sunny Sunday", "Need You & Your Kind Of Loving", and "That's The Breaks Of Love".
