J DillaShining ... CD
BBE (UK), 2006. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A glorious send off from J Dilla – with some of the most soulful productions Dilla's ever laid down – and appearances by Common, D'Angelo, Pharoahe Monch, Madlib, MED, Black Thought and others! It's impossible to listen to The Shining without considering the sad circumstances surrounding its release, and all too easy to over praise, but this record is filled timelessly inventive production – and passionate rhymes from the honored guests. A lot of the more leftfield, abstract touches that create most of the character on the Donuts LP are really on the outskirts of the sound here – a much richer, deeper, funky drum influenced batch of sounds. We're speechless. There's one more official posthumous LP in the can, and thank goodness for that. Tracks include in-your-f**kin' face intro "Geek Down" with Busta Rhymes, "E=MC2" feat Common, "Love Jones", "Love" feat Pharoahe Monch, "Baby" feat Madlib & Guilty Simpson, "So Far To Go" feat Common & D'Angelo (come back D', the world needs you), "Jungle Love" feat MED & Guilty Simpson, "Dime Piece (Remix)" feat Dwele, "Love Movin'" feat Black Thought and "Won't Do". ✨✧ Macy GrayTrouble With Being Myself ... CD
Epic, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Macy's follow up to The Id, which was a wonderful and underappreciated record, and it's nearly as nice! Trouble With Being Myself sort of combines the paths she took on the previous two albums for a really nice mix of material. "When I See You", "She Ain't Right For You", "My Fondest Childhood Memories" and other tracks kind of carry on the smoother, more mannered style of her breakthrough first album, and other tracks like the fine "It Ain't The Money" with Pharoahe Monch, "Screamin'" and others carry on with the grittier, deeper style of The Id. A strong album overall, one that should have kept Macy on the shortlist of relavent pop artists for a long time to come – but sadly fell through the cracks! Other tracks include "Things That Made Me Change", "Jesus For A Day", "She Don't Write Songs About You", and "Speechless". CD

TwistaKamikaze ... CD
Atlantic, 2004. Used ... $6.99
The manaical Chicagoan Mr. Tung Twista, who's contributed so much life to so many hits as the guest rhymer, cuts by Ludacris, P. Diddy and others is finally poised to have one of his own damn albums go platinum! Kamikaze features the hits "Slow Jamz" with Kanye West and "So Sexy" with R. Kelly plus "Pimp On" with Too $hort and 8 Ball, "Overnight Celebrity", "Higher" with Ludacris, "Hope" with Cee-Lo, "Sunshine" with Anthony Hamilton and more. In the past, it seemed like Twista tried a little too hard to transform his image into whatever particular mold was hot at the time, but on this album his tip-toeing from gangsta here, to big pimpin' there, to smooth and soulful here, to Pharoahe Monche style mania there actually works really well. It seems now like Twista's best talent all along may have been his versatility among all the different face plates of mainstream street hop. It works pretty well on this album, anyway! CD
