No slush here, as Alex Heitlinger leads a large group with a really cool, crisp vibe – modern jazz arrangements with a style that's contemporary, but not in an avant way – maybe just with a boldness that embraces so many changes in bigger jazz ensemble modes on both the American and European scenes in the past fifty years – then gives things a spin that's very much in the spirit of the leader! A beautiful bit of folk-psych from the late 60s UK scene – recorded for Polydor in 1969, but never issued at the time – now finally getting its first exposure to the world at large! The group have a really easygoing approach – blending fuzzy electric and softer acoustic guitars, slow-stepping rhythms, and some slightly more tripped-out instrumentation – all with vocals that take on a nicely lyrical approach – never too hippy-dippy, but with an evocative quality that has echoes of the ancient. Group members have ties to Band Of Joy and Velvett Fogg – and the set features uncredited work from Peter Frampton, and members of The Herd and East of Eden. Incredibly groovy work from a set of German crime films of the late 60s and early 70s – all in a very mod and jazzy mode! The music was all done by the legendary Gert Wilden – who also weighed in for Crippled Dick with the excellent Schulmadchen Report collection – and the overall feel is very much in the mode of some of the best Peter Thomas soundtracks from the same generation. There's lots of great twists and turns in the arrangements – and the tunes are not just jazzy, but also feature some great use of organ, vocals, and odd production – making for some wonderfully swinging tracks that have a really offbeat sound. As usual, the whole thing's packaged with some great Crippled Dick touches – and the CD features a total of 20 tracks that include "Oriental Twist", "Desert Hips", "Murder Beat", "Green Spider Theme", "Rolf Torring", "Piano Blues", and "White Cargo". A series of duet and trio pieces recorded live by pianist Misha Mengelberg – in the company of saxophonist Steve Potts, trumpeter Thomas Herberer, tuba player Michel Godard, and percussionist Achim Kremer – all in ways that are often spare, and graced with the strong feeling of each player staking out their individual space! The overall quality of the record is perhaps a bit more academic than some of Mengelberg's other recordings, but the overall result is still quite nice – and Misha's own piano often breaks through some of the too-contemplative moments with a stronger sense of spirit. Performance features 9 titles in all – each numbered versions of "IC Root". CD

A great document of a really unique slice of 50s jazz – the trad-based jam session recordings led by Buck Clayton in 1953 and 1954! The sessions were originally recorded for Columbia Records by John Hammond – and done in a style that wanted to break from the tighter jam session mode used over at Verve. Clayton was the ostensible leader, but Hammond really directed the sessions – using the famous trumpeter in conjunction with players that included Joe Newman, Urbie Green, Sir Charles Thompson, Joe Thomas, Al Cohn, Jo Jones, and others – all in a mode that had a rougher, more "on the spot" sort of feel. The set brings together 19 tracks on 3CDs – all much longer than usual for the time, especially for Clayton's recordings – and featuring titles that include "Moten Swing", "How Hi The Fi", "Blue Moon", "Lean Baby", "Robbin's Nest", "Undecided", "Blue Lou", and "All The Cats Join In". The title's no lie, as Wallace Roney serves up a set of jazz standards – yet in keeping with his other great work on Muse Records, the album's also got a heck of a lot going on as well! The album's hardly the kind of "trumpeter hits the classics" album you might expect – as throughout the session, things open up nicely – starting with sparkling notes on trumpet, but pushing into some of the bolder territory Roney was known for at the time, eventually ending on a number composed by the group. Overlooked spiritual jazz genius from Chicago trumpeter Malachi Thompson – a player who was making 70s-styled sessions when most folks had given up on the music! The vibe here is right between Strata East and some of the more righteous 70s sessions on Muse – and the group features superb work from tenorist Carter Jefferson, who's at the level of his Rise Of Atlantis work from back in the day – in a group that also features Albert Dailey on piano, James King on bass, Nasar Abadey on drums, and Randy Abbott on congas. Arnae Burton sings on the track "Back To The One", Leon Thomas guests on "No More Hard Times" – and other instrumental tracks include "A Rising Daystar", "Spirit Of Man", "Dhyia Malika", and "I Remember Clifford". This one changes up the groove a bit – still sticking in Shaw's spiritual jazz vein at times, but also tripping things out a bit more with use of electric guitar and the ultra-cool "bag flute" – which is almost like a wah-wah sort of reed instrument, and which makes for some really funky moments! The electric touches are totally great – and mix with rougher acoustic jazz elements in ways that remind us of earlier 70s work from Luther Thomas and Joe McPhee – also both avant players who could show a funky side like this at times.
