Peter ThomasBig Boss (aka Fists Of Fury) (original soundtrack) ... LP
All Score Media (Germany), 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... About November 5, 2024 (delayed)
The funkiest version we've ever heard of this great Bruce Lee soundtrack – one that brings together all the sweet instrumental moments by Peter Thomas, with sound that's much better than any other reissue! While previous versions have taken the music along with the dialogue, this gem of a set does a great job of isolating all the instrumental grooves – finally showcasing Thomas' excellent funky backings for Lee's onscreen antics, and also throwing in some sweet mellower moments that haven't appeared on other soundtrack releases too! The package is great, too – with English and German notes on the film and music, plus cool images too – finally telling the whole story behind one of the grooviest martial arts soundtracks ever. 20 tracks in all – including "The Amulet", "Hard Drugs", "Girl Loves Cheng Li", "Mukuri", "Big Boss Theme", "Big Boss & His Gang", "Blood & Dead Friends", and "EKG". Peter ThomasDerrick & Der Alte ... LP
All Score Media (Germany), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy Gatefold ... $38.99 44.99
A rare look at the German cop show sound of the 70s – served up here by the great Peter Thomas, who did so much wonderful spy and sci fi material in the 60s! The tunes have all those charms of Thomas' earlier work, especially his strong commitment to using the best jazz musicians to serve up the best sort of sound – mixing their contributions with some sharp funky rhythms and a bit of soaring strings – all at a level that maybe tops all the cool American cop show sounds of the time! Thomas makes great use of wordless vocals at times, with lyrics on a few tunes too – and the set also features some never-used gems that were originally done for the show. Titles include "Milky Way", "Isar Disco", "Stephan Und Harry Ermitteln", "Eine Million", "Go", "Tod Im Olympiadorf", "Bordkapelle", and "Opium". LP, Vinyl record album

Peter ThomasEdgar Wallace – Music From The Original Movies (180 gram pressing) ... LP
All Score Media (Germany), Late 1960s. New Copy Gatefold ... $38.99 44.99
Legendary soundtrack work from the mighty Peter Thomas – one of the hippest German cats working on the scene in the 60s – presented here with key classics from the Edgar Wallace spy/crime series, plus a number of unreleased tracks as well! If you know Thomas, you'll know that he's got a great way with a jazzy groove – and also that he's a legend for making familiar instruments sound very weird and unusual – which he definitely does here, in ways that almost put the Italian soundtrack scene to shame! Thomas turned out work in a number of different settings, but these Edgar Wallace tunes are some of his most famous – and they feature key work from jazz players who include Jan Hammer and Ingfried Hoffmann on organ, Klaus Doldinger and Emil Mangelsdorff on reeds, and Sigi Schwab on guitar. There's some cool wordless vocals in the music at times – and titles include "Requiem For Crooks", "Theme For Lucy", "Zimmer 13", "Der Zinker", "Sitar Cha Cha", "Space Of Today", "Sgt Pepper's Final Fight", and "Twisting Monk". Mocambo (Germany), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The rarest legacy of the great Peter Thomas – a very hip German leader/arranger who you'll know from famous soundtracks and work for the MPS label – stepping out here in a whole host of very obscure cuts done for a range of different sound libraries! The work here comes from labels that include Golden Ring, CPM, KPM, and DeWolfe – and together the tracks represent a very overlooked side of Thomas' genius – music that shares all the great blend of jazzy grooving, offbeat arrangements, and unusual instrumentation as some of the other work that's been reissued over the years – but with a wider scope, and a freshness that shows why Peter Thomas has been at the top of our list of greatest groovers of all time for so many years! Titles include "Block Rocker", "Corals In Space", "Astral Snow", "Power Boost", "Funky Flower", "Evening Air A", "International Espionage", "Cruising Crooner", "Nightmare On LSD", "Electric Cats", and "Mars Close Up". Keefe Jackson's Likely SoRound Goal ... CD
Delmark, 2013. New Copy ... $1.99 15.99
Keefe Jackson's an artist who seems to change the name of his group with each new recording – and for good reason too, given that every album has a very unique, personal feel! This date's a live recording done at the Jazzwerkstatt Festival – and it features Keefe working with a few key saxophonists from the Chicago scene, in an expanded lineup that also makes way for a rich array of European horns too – a brilliant array of reeds that carves out some marvelous tones and colors throughout! The approach is like a doubling (or tripling) of the sax quartet approach – really taking the concept to a whole new level – using the horns for rhythm, melody, and more – but also allowing plenty of solo space from this amazing lineup. Horns include tenor, alto, soprano, sopranino, and baritone saxes – plus bass clarinet, e flat clarinet, and alto clarinet as well – played by Keefe Jackson, Mars Williams, Waclaw Zimpel, Dave Rempis, Marc Stucki, Peter Schmid, and Thomas Mejer. Titles include "Overture", "Hierarch Follies", "Round Goal", "Roses", "Neither Spin Nor Weave", and "My Time Is My Own" – plus "Bridge Solo" tracks by Jackson and Rempis. CD

P&P/Unisono (Germany), 1980. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $44.99 49.99
A beautiful album from the German scene of the early 80s – one that mixes in some warmer currents from modal jazz and Brazilian music, in a way that reminds us a lot of some of our favorite recordings on the MPS/Saba label! Klaus-Werner Pusch is trumpeter, and he heads up this beautiful group that's tied together perfectly on every note on the session – a lineup that features these soaring rhythms from Peter Kosch on piano, Jochen Schaal on bass, and Thomas Zahn on drums – and some especially brilliant tenor work from Wilson De Oliveira – a player we don't know at all, but one who brings a sense of soul to the record that really deepens the proceedings! You might know one or two of these tracks from their inclusion on the legendary Glucklich series years back – but the whole album's fantastic, and is taken even better as a whole. Titles include "Peterchen's Mondfahrt", "Sandra", "My Destination", "Demiane", and "Tango For Patricia". And plus, this edition features a rare bonus track – a duet between Pusch on trumpet and Kirk Lightsey on piano – recorded in 2018. LP, Vinyl record album

The funkier side of the TK Records label from the 70s – a company best known for some big disco and pop hits of the time, but one who also recorded some mighty funky nuggets too! TK had some killer players working in its Miami studios, so that even when the artist in the front might change, the rhythm players in the back were still cooking up some real genius at the core – which makes for a surprisingly unified vibe over the course of the set! All the titles here were sampled, most more than once – and titles include "Living Together Is Keeping Us Apart" by Clarence Reid, "90% Of Me" by Gwen McCrae, "Groove To Get Down" by T Connection, "Dance With Me" by Peter Brown, "Keep It Up" by Milton Wright, "You" by Robin Kenyatta, "Dedicate All My Love" by Raw Soul Express, "Why Can't We Live Together" by Timmy Thomas, "Givin Me Your Love" by Facts Of Live, and "Clean Up Woman" by Betty Wright. ✨✧ Evan Parker's Transatlantic Trance MapMarconi's Drift ... CD
False Walls (UK), 2024. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pretty amazing improvised performance – one that hearkens back to some of the classic Company collaborations from UK reedman Evan Parker – but with a real difference! The difference is that the recording features two sets of musicians in different spaces – seven in the UK, six in the US – performing at the same time through the magic of streaming, and creating music that hardly makes you feel like the space of the Atlantic ocean is between them! Part of the album's success lies in the strength of the players, who all seem to follow Parker as he's in his more sensitive sonic space – which is great, as there's a variety of electronic and acoustic elements in the music – soprano from Parker, trumpet from Peter Evans, viola from Mat Maneri, piano from Craig Taborn and Sylvie Courvoisier, clarinet and shakuhachi from Ned Rothenberg, cello from Hanna Marshall, clarinet from Alex Ward, and trombone from Robert Jarvis – mixed with electronic contributions from Ikue Mori, Sam Pluta, and Pat Thomas – plus turntable and processing from Matthew Wright, and more electronics from Taborn. The sound is every bit as amazing as you'd expect from these elements – the the performance runs for almost an hour in length. CD

The LP comes with a nice booklet of notes and images from the film – and titles include "Virgin Land" by Tony Kinsey, "Umbrellas" by James Asher, "Coordinates Meeting" by Peter Thomas, "Grey Sigh" by Roger Webb, "Bass In Action No 1" by Tonio Rubio, "Gang Train" by Bernard Estardy, "Pop Drums" by Andre Arpino, "Rayban" by I Marc 4, "Nel Villaggio" by Piero Umiliani, "Night Moves" by Frank McDonald & Chris Rae, "Main Chance" by Alan Parker & William Parrish, and "Day Tripper" by Brian Bennett & Alan Hawkshaw. No slush here, as Alex Heitlinger leads a large group with a really cool, crisp vibe – modern jazz arrangements with a style that's contemporary, but not in an avant way – maybe just with a boldness that embraces so many changes in bigger jazz ensemble modes on both the American and European scenes in the past fifty years – then gives things a spin that's very much in the spirit of the leader! Heitlinger composed most of the tracks on the set – and there's key solos on each, with work from Michael Thomas on soprano and alto saxes, Peter Sommer and Jon Armstrong on tenor, Greg Gispert and Shane Endley on trumpets, Corey Christiansen on guitar, Brian Woodbury and John Fedchock on trombones, and Carmen Staaf on piano. Hi Hat, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
Weather Report at the start of the 80s – really stretching out here in a live performance from a tour in support of their 8:30 album at the time! The style here is sharper and more hard-edged than that album, though – as the live setting shakes off some of the warmer studio elements, and exposes the group still very powerful at the core – with some especially bold elements coming from the keyboards of Joe Zawinul and saxes of Wayne Shorter! The rest of the lineup includes Jaco Pastorius on bass, Peter Erskine on drums, and Bobby Thomas on percussion – and titles include "Madagascar", "Three Views Of A Street", "Port Of Entry", "Dream Clock", "Brown Street", and even a "Bass Solo" from Pastorius! Sony, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A hell of an overdue collection – and on that definitely doesn't use the word "legendary" lightly – as the four CDs' worth of music are all an essential addition to the Weather Report catalog! The music here is from a stretch when the group was really on fire – and the recording quality is excellent throughout, and maybe with an edge that was sometimes disappearing from the group's studio records – an undercurrent of darkness that really takes us back to the initial five years of the project, especially on the long tracks that really have them stretching out on solos. Material is by a quartet version of the group – with Joe Zawinul on keyboards, Wayne Shorter on reeds, Jaco Pastorius on bass, and Peter Erskine on drums – and by a quintet version which adds in Robert Thomas Jr. The 4CDs are overstuffed with music –- 28 long tracks in all, packaged with plenty of notes – and titles include "Joe & Wayne Duet", "Birdland", "Jaco Solo", "Wayne Solo", "Sightseeing", "The Orphan", "Forlorn", "Madagascar", "Night Passage", "Teen Town", "Peter's Drum Solo", and "Directions". Famous tracks from the legendary Miami Soul powerhouse TK Records – famous not because they were hits in the 70s, but because they were used in later years as hip hop samples – dug from the deep well of music that TK recorded back in the day, to lay the blueprint for a whole new generation! The set brings together 15 gems that are not only funky, and which have key elements that you'll know from hip hop songs – but which also stand pretty darn strongly on their own, as a fantastic overview of the care of creation that TK brought to its work in the studio. Drummer Paal Nilssen-Love is a musician we're used to hearing in smaller groups, and duo and solo sessions – but this time around, he provides a stunning debut of his Large Unit – an 11 piece ensemble that really brings out a whole new sound in Paal's music! Much of the record is improvised, but there's also a larger sense of structure too – that balance between ensemble direction and individual freedom that's run through groups from the London Jazz Composers Orchestra to the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet! The range of expression is wonderful – much more full of color and tonal elements than usual projects we've heard from Paal – definitely a new step forward – and musicians include Thomas Johansson on cornet and flugelhorn, Mats Aleklint on trombone, Kasper Vaernes on alto and soprano, Klaus Ellerhusen Holm on alto and baritone, Borre Molstad on tuba, Ketil Gutvik on guitar, Lasse Marhaug on electronics and turntable, Jon Rune Strom and Christian Meass Svendsen on basses, and Andreas Wildhagen and Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion. Jumbo (Bunky Green)Jumbo – Bigger & Better ... LP
Leonard Productions, Early 70s. Sealed ... $28.99
A very weird little funky record – featuring a big band with a rockish sound, led by Chicago altoist Bunky Green (the same one who recorded for Cadet) and trumpeter John Priola. The group's clearly been inspired by some of the rock groups using a jazzy sound at the time – and they do have a lead vocalist on a few tracks who's trying for that soulful David Clayton Thomas style. The best moments, though, are instrumental – and the group lays out nice solos, even on the vocal tracks. The cut "Opener" has some nice funky basslines, and some cool electronics that bubble under the solos. "Give It Everything You've Got" has some good funky solos. And the band does a nice long funky version of "Hey Jude". LP, Vinyl record album
(Sealed original. Shrink has a few small tears on the corners.)

Cha Cha ShawKingdom Come ... CD
Folkways, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 16.98
The second Folkways album from trumpeter Charles Shaw – and even more wonderful than the first! This one changes up the groove a bit – still sticking in Shaw's spiritual jazz vein at times, but also tripping things out a bit more with use of electric guitar and the ultra-cool "bag flute" – which is almost like a wah-wah sort of reed instrument, and which makes for some really funky moments! The electric touches are totally great – and mix with rougher acoustic jazz elements in ways that remind us of earlier 70s work from Luther Thomas and Joe McPhee – also both avant players who could show a funky side like this at times. Shaw plays trumpet, flugelhorn, and the bag flute – and other instrumentation includes guitar from James Greggo and Tom Lee Harris, alto from Brian Ross, tenor from Glenn Spears, bass from Ronnie Boykins, and drums from Art Blakey Jr. Titles include "Kid Zorro", "Postage Paid", "Mr Zip", "Chain Reaction", and "Melted Soul". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

✨✧ Richard WilliamsNew Horn In Town ... LP
Candid, 1961. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant session of modernist hardbop – one of the few records ever cut as a leader by trumpeter Richard Williams! Williams was a key part of the Charles Mingus group for a few years – and his soulful approach ranks with Ted Curson as some of the most compelling underground trumpet work of the early 60s. The set features Williams in a great group – with Leo Wright on alto, Reggie Workman on bass, Richard Wyands on piano, and Bobby Thomas on drums – and they're playing material that isn't too far out, but which does have significantly modern tendencies. Williams solos are fantastic, and the album is proof that he was one of the 60s great under-recognized talents! Titles include "Ferris Wheel", "Blues In A Quandry", "Raucous Notes", and "Renita's Bounce". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marquis HillPoet ... CD
Skiptone, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sweet debut from trumpeter Marquis Hill – an up and coming talent on the Chicago scene, and a player who's already finding a strong voice of his own! Hill's style of blowing works in these fluid lines that combine nicely with the album's work on vibes from Justin Thomas – a mode that rings out beautifully with a fresh quality of its own, but with echoes that almost make us think of some lost 70s session from Art Farmer and Bobby Hutcherson! Christopher McBride plays alto in the group, and his deft lines really add a nice degree of complexity to the record – some of the most expressive moments in the whole set, and a great counterpart to the work on vibes and trumpet. Other players are all Windy City locals, and the set's got a few spoken passages – which underscore the righteous quality of the music. All titles are originals by Hill – and include "Return Of The Student", "B-Tone", "Giovanna", "Nouvelle Orleans", "The Poet", "Vella", and "The Color Of Fear". CD

✨✧ Dwight Trible with Matthew HalsallInspirations ... LP
Gondwana (UK), 2017. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic setting for the voice of Dwight Trible – one of the few contemporary jazz singers who inherited the style of spiritual jazz greats like Leon Thomas or Joe Lee Wilson! Trible's singing here with backing from a group that includes trumpeter Matthew Halsall, recording on Halsall's own label too – a wonderful imprint that's also one of the few to really get the spiritual vibe just right – that sort of long-flowing, always-soulful mode that grew out of the post-Coltrane generation! Tracks are all open and modal – just the right vibe for Trible to hit his heights – and they also leave plenty of space for Halsall to take some great solos, too – in a combo that also includes piano, bass, drums, and even a bit of harp. Most titles are remakes of older numbers, but given a completely different spin by Trible – and titles include "Tryin Times", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair", "Heaven & Hell", "Feelin Good", and "Dear Lord".
