Peter ErskinePeter Erskine ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1982. Used ... $9.99 11.99
A great bit of soulful fusion from drummer Peter Erskine – one of the few albums he made as a leader of this nature, even though his playing graced lots of other wonderful records at the time! The approach here is tight, but never too much so – smooth, but never slick – a warmly electric groove that's really a lot more in a mid-70s sort of style than you'd expect from the early 80s date of the album. Other players here are all well-suited for the set – and include Randy Brecker on trumpet, Michael Brecker on tenor, Bob Mintzer on tenor, Don Grolnick on electric piano, Eddie Gomez on bass, Don Alias on percussion, and Mike Mainieri on vibes – and titles include "Leroy Street", "In Statu Nascendi", "All's Well That Ends", "My Ship", and "ESP". CD

✨✧ Peter ErskineJuni ... CD
ECM, 1997. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Peter Erskine's the leader of this trio date, but it's pianist John Taylor who really seems to set the tone for the record – moving effortlessly between melodic moments and more spare, sensitive passages – always with that dark edge that can make his music so great! Erskine swings when needed, punctuates things at other points – and bassist Palle Danielsson once again gives that warmly thoughtful approach that has made him one of the standout bassists for the ECM mode over the years. Titles include "The Ant & The Elk", "Windfall", "Prelude No 2", "Siri", "Fable", "Twelve", and "Namasti". CD

✨✧ John Abercrombie/Marc Johnson/Peter ErskineJohn Abercrombie/Marc Johnson/Peter Erskine ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nicely varied live set from this trio of key ECM players of the 80s – captured here with the same sense of sound as some of their studio recordings – which must have been something amazing to hear in person! Abercrombie's still very chromatic at this point in his career – playing fluid, colorful lines on guitar – but also using occasional guitar synthesizer passages too – more waves of sound than individual lines, which sounds especially nice next to more driving drums from Peter Erskine! Marc Johnson's ear for space is perfectly tuned for the proceedings – working at a level that's far beyond standard bassmanship – and titles include "Light Beam", "Drum Solo", "Four On One", "Samurai Hee Haw", "Furs On Ice", "Stella By Starlight", and "Innerplay". ✨✧ Peter Erskine/John Taylor/Palle DanielssonAs It Was – You Never Know/Time Being/As It Is/Juni (4CD set) ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1993/1994/1996/1999. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A pretty wonderful ECM package that puts together 4 records by the Peter Erskine/John Taylor/Palle Danielsson trio made throughout the 1990s – You Never Know, Time Being, As It Is, and Juni – excellent work that holds up incredibly well! It's really lovely, melodic material – done in a more nuanced, lyrical realm than you might expect from the drummer Erskine if you're mostly familiar with him from Weather Report. His intuitive interplay with bassist Palle Daniesson is great, but the pianist John Taylor deserves a ton of credit for the mood here – especially on his own compositions, which are arguably the heart and soul of the trio's work together. Great stuff – and it's all the easier to appreciate how consistent it is when collected here in a 4CD box set! Nice little booklet of notes, too. CD

Contemporary, 1979. Used ... Just Sold Out!
We love Joe Henderson's 70s sides, and though this is reaching the end of the decade, it still smokes. Joe sounds great, with his raw edge still intact, playing nice far reaching solos that never leave the pocket. The set opens with "Y Todavia La Quiero", a nice groover with a feel like an uptempo "Love Supreme" set to cook rather than open you up spiritually. Chick Corea, Tony Dumas and Peter Erskine are the band, though Richard Davis and Tony Williams guest on two cuts. The set also includes one of our favorite Corea compositions, 'Yes, My Dear", plus the title track, "Crimson Lake" and "My One And Only Love". CD

✨✧ Gary BurtonDeparture ... CD
Concord, 1997. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A laidback quintet date from Gary Burton – one that almost returns us to the warm hues of his best early work in the 60s! The record's awash in Burton's famous tone on the vibes – a very color-sensitive approach to the instrument that resonates nicely amidst a setting that includes piano from Fred Hersch, guitar from John Scofield, bass from John Patitucci, and drums from Peter Erskine. The tracks are all taken at a mellow or midtempo pace, and Burton's never too arch-modern in his approach – almost soulfully swinging at times, on tracks that include "Poinciana", "Depk", "Tenderly", "If I Were A Bell", "For All We Know", and "Japanese Waltz". ✨✧ Bobby HutchersonUn Poco Loco ... LP
Columbia, 1980. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly great album by Bobby Hutcherson – and like his other albums for Columbia, a record that manages to be smooth, yet still has an edge! The format's bigger and more ambitious than previous years, but it's also an extension of the modal soulful style he forged with Harold Land – a really stretched out approach to the vibes that differs nicely from his 60s work, and which has some really soulful touches throughout. The group features George Cables on electric and acoustic piano, John Abercrombie on guitar, and Peter Erskine on percussion – but the real strength of the set is Bobby, who slides between vibes and marimba with a skittish energy that really cracks a lot of life into the set. Titles include "Un Poco Loco", "Ivory Coast", "The Sailor's Song", "Ebony Moonbeams" and "I Wanna Stand Over There". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stan KentonStan Kenton Plays Chicago ... CD
Creative World, 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stan Kenton plays Chicago – and a bit of Blood Sweat & Tears as well – taking all the best energy from the young jazz rock generation, and turning it towards the sound of his orchestra for the 70s! There's some totally kicking rhythms here – thanks to the mighty Peter Erskine on drums and Mike Ross on electric bass – both of whom really help open up the tunes right from the start, and give the horn players plenty of energy to soar nicely! There's some added percussion from Ramon Lopez, and Kenton plays piano – but often stays a bit more in the background, to let the younger players groove over the top – on titles that include "First Child", "The Rise & Fall Of A Short Fugue", "Chicago III Suite", and "From Blood Sweat & Tears". ✨✧ Bob BergShort Stories ... CD
Denon (Japan), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great Denon date from saxophonist Bob Berg – recorded at a point when he was really coming into his own as a leader, and using some fusion elements a bit more confidently than before! The session balances Bob's work on tenor and soprano with work from Don Grolnick on organ and keyboards, Mike Stern on guitar, Robby Kilgore on synth, and Peter Erskine on drums and percussion – a lineup that feels itself together well on the date, grooving with a sense of tightness, but one that's opened up well by Berg's bolder solo moments. David Sanborn guests on one track – and titles include "Words", "Snakes", "Kalimba", "The Search", "Maya", and "That's The Ticket". CD

Lovely work from Eliane Elias – and exactly the set you should turn to if you ever doubted her chops on the piano! Elias starts with a quick rendition of Bud Powell's "Hallucinations", played with a deftness that Toshiko Akiyoshi would appreciate – and the set then runs into a batch of tunes that includes some charming originals from Eliane – those fully-formed numbers that always made her a well-rounded talent right from the start! The blend of sensitivity and swing on the record is really impressive – and made even better by a set of players that includes Eddie Gomez on bass, Barry Finnerty on guitar, and Jack DeJohnette and Peter Erskine on drums. Titles include "One Side Of You", "Impulsive", "Cross Current", "Campari & Soda", and "Peggy's Blue Skylight". CD

✨✧ Manhattan Jazz QuintetFunky Strut ... CD
Sweet Basil, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not a funky strut in the manner of David Matthews' 70s work for CTI/Kudu Records – but a set that has the pianist bringing a really old school, soul jazz approach to the session – almost trying to go for the 60s modes of players like Horace Silver or Bobby Timmons! As with other Manhattan Jazz Quintet albums, the set really sparkles from the talents of Lew Soloff on trumpet and George Young on tenor – a duo who know how to come together, then break apart with the kind of dynamic, soulful styles of an older Blue Note record – and the rest of the group features Eddie Gomez on bass and Peter Erskine on drums. Titles include "Hot Grits", "Sister Sadie", "Song For My Father", "Foxy Little Thing", and "Funky Strut". CD

✨✧ Gary PeacockGuamba ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bassist Gary Peacock really transformed his sound in the 70s – thanks in part to the smaller settings and more open space of the ECM label – to a point where he was able to bring his approach back to a group setting with a really fantastic record like this! At the outside, the record might appear to be more conventional – but the players within really move with Peacock's energy and inspiration – slowly shaping the sounds in their own ways, with great work from Jan Garbarek on tenor and soprano sax, Palle Mikkelborg on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Peter Erskine on drums. Titles include "Lila", "Thyme Time", "Gardenia", "Introending", "Guamba", and "Requiem". CD

✨✧ StepsParadox ... CD
Sony (Japan), 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little set from the precursor to Steps Ahead – heard here on a Japanese-only album that's got a really wonderful sound! The group's a quintet that includes Michael Brecker on tenor, Mike Maineri on vibes, Don Grolnick on keyboards, Eddie Gomez on bass, and Peter Erskine on drums – working together in a style that's mostly acoustic, but which has some slight electric touches on the bottom – expanding the sound ever so slightly, but still letting the jazz colors and tones of the players dominate the set. Tracks are all originals, and all quite long – and the bass of Gomez and vibes of Maineri really give the whole thing a sense of soul that pushes it ahead of the pack. Titles include "The Aleph", "NL4", "Patch Of Blue", "Four Chords", and "Nichka". CD

One of the leading lights of the ECM Records scene in the early 80s – bassist Marc Johnson, working here with his successful Bass Desires group! The lineup features some wonderful interplay on stringed instruments – Johnson's bass, and guitars from both John Scofield and Bill Frisell, the later of whom also plays a bit of guitar synthesizer, in very ECM-shaped lines. Drums are from Peter Erskine, who's well-heard when the moment allows – and titles include "Samurai Hee Haw", "Mojo Highway", "Thanks Again", "Bass Desires", and "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair". Dark work from the quartet Bass Desires – a combo that draws heavily on the rumbling sounds of bassist Marc Johnson, then fills in the spaces with twin guitars from Bill Frisell and John Scofield, and also features a bit of drums from Peter Erskine! Some of the sounds here echo more abstract experiments in the left side of the jazz spectrum during the 80s – but they're taken into a bit stronger, straighter focus here – and recorded with enough ECM touches to make Johnson's music cross over in surprising ways. A few tracks are surprisingly tuneful, and titles include "Small Hands", "Thrill Seekers", "1951", "Prayer Beads", and "Sweet Soul". LP, Vinyl record album
