Dusko Goykovich with Nathan Davis & Mal WaldronSwinging Macedonia ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $16.99 About May 12, 2021
A legendary German session from the 60s – and a record that really showcases the unusual criss-crossing of modes that was going on in the European scene at the time! There's a very strong MPS vibe here – as trumpeter Dusko Goykovich leads a swinging sextet that includes Nathan Davis on flute, soprano, and tenor – blowing some tremendously soulful reed lines – plus incredible rhythms from Mal Waldron on piano, Peter Trunk on bass, and Cees See on drums. The record's an attempt to bring traditional Macedonian rhythms into a jazz perspective – but with players like these, it swings in a way any Macedonian album never could – damn soulful, and with a great exotic vibe. Davis is especially great, and plays in a soaring modal vein that's similar to his work on his classic MPS sides, and on the records he cut in America in the early 70s. The album's a beautiful session that often get's overlooked because it blends it with the Enja catalog – but it's really more of a record that belongs in an MPS reissue series, and is a great lost groover that's waiting to be rediscovered by the Dusty Groove crowd. Titles include "Macedonia", "Old Fisherman's Daughter", "Jumbo Uganda", "Bem Basha", "Saga Se karame", and "The Nights Of Skopje". CD
This title is scheduled for release about Wednesday, May 12.

✨✧ Bill LaswellAgainst Empire ... CD
MOD Reloaded, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really amazing all-star project from Bill Lawell – one that hearkens back to that amazing criss-crossing of sounds and styles he created in the 90s – music that was, in part, made with some of Laswell's collaborators on this session! The tracks are all nice and long, and feature work from Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Pharoah Sanders on tenor, and other guests who include Peter Apfelbaum, Jerry Marotta, Hideo Yamaki, Adam Rudolph, and Satoyasu Shomura – all working in a mode that has some of the Laswell soundscape qualities of the past, but also maybe more of a spiritual vibe overall! There's less of the elements in those previous records that can sometimes sound a bit dated, and Bill's bass is right up front at some of the best moments – played with long-spun textures that are mighty nice, and which again seem to sound better than his work in years past. Titles include "Tabu", "The Seven Holy Mountains", "Golden Spiral", and "Shadowline". CD

✨✧ SF Jazz CollectiveLive 2007 – 4th Annual Concert Tour – Original Compositions & Works By Thelonious Monk ... CD
SF Jazz, 2007. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Only the fourth year of this amazing all-star group – and they've already got their own sound so strongly in place, they really make some fresh magic with the music of Thelonious Monk! Arrangements of Monk tunes are by different members of the group – pianist Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Dave Douglas, bassist Matt Penman, drummer Eric Harland, tenorist Joshua Redman, and alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon – who work here alongside the vibes of Bobby Hutcherson in some stunning remakes of "Oska T", "I Mean You", "Ugly Beauty", "Bye Ya", "Criss Cross", "Brilliant Corners", and "Bright Mississippi" – handled by the octet in a style that reminds us of some of Monk's late 50s larger group work on Riverside. The set also features a full dose of original compositions – the long "San Francisco Suite", plus "Union", "Lion's Gate", "Life At The End Of The Tunnel", and "Haast Pass". CD
(Limited numbered edition of 3000 copies!)

✨✧ Flying LotusFlying Lotus Presents INFINITY Infinitum – Maida Vale Session EP (with bonus download) ... LP
Warp, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great moment from Flying Lotus – a live set recorded for Gilles Peterson in 2010, at a point that's kind of the start of a whole new generation in jazzy modes! The lineup here features tenor from Ravi Coltrane, light string touches from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and some especially great bass ruminations from Thundercat – in a mode that's spiritual, but also ethereal too – kind of a criss-crossing of two sides of the Cali underground, in ways that find great expression under the loving ears of Peterson. A great bridge between two generations of Warp Records – with titles that include "Golden Axe", "Tea Leaf Dancers", "Drips", and "Mmm Hmm". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Baba Brooks & OthersGay Feet Every Night – Featuring Baba Brooks and his Band ... LP
Doctor Bird/Dub Store (Japan), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Raw grooves from the Jamaican scene of the pre-reggae years – served up here in a blend of early ska, jump up soul, and other jazzy styles of the time – all handled by Sonia Pottinger, who was the first female producer on the Kingston scene! There's a nice mix of modes going on here, and the album's a great contrast to some of the more famous Jamaican records of the time – as it really shows the criss-crossing of Caribbean influences that was still filtering into the scene, even while things were coming together with a decidedly local groove. Trumpeter Baba Brooks is one of the standouts here – and works with his group on the tracks "Mosquito Jump Up", "First Session", "Bugle Boy", "Faberge", and "Ki Salavoca" – alongside other tracks that include "Hold Your Head In Front" by Joe White & Chuck, "By The Sea" by The Saints, "Heartaches" by The Techniques, and "What Must I Say" by Claudell Clarke.
