✨✧ Pete RodriguezOh That's Nice – Ay Que Bueno ... LP
Alegre, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $38.99
Oh That's Nice – indeed! Pete Rodriguez and crew serve up one of their best albums ever – a non-stop boogaloo party that gets you from the word "go"! The title track kicks off the set with an incredibly catchy hook dancing over these dark piano parts – and the rest of the album follows up with a killer mix of foot-stomping groovers that will never, ever let you down! A stunner throughout, with lively tracks that include "Oh That's Nice", "Let's Get Together", "Que Mania", "Bobby", and "Asi, Asi". LP, Vinyl record album
(Great original pressing! Cover has a small cutout hole, and a light scratch in one corner – but this is a great copy overall.)

Pete Rodriguez & His OrchestraHot & Wild/Yo Vengo Soltando Chispas ... LP
Alegre, 1968. Very Good+ ... $28.99
Hot and wild – two of the best words you could use to describe the late 60s Latin Soul material of Pete Rodriguez – especially on an album like this! This album has Pete and his combo at their best – stepping effortlessly between English-language, soul-based tracks – and other material that has them showing their Latin chops in a straighter Pacheco-inspired style – really tight small combo grooving, with that Spanish Harlem sound that cats like Pete could do so well. The whole thing's a winner, and titles include "Here Comes the Judge" and "People Want to Know", plus "Tears on My Pillow", "Carmela", "Pa'Lla Va", "Arranca En Fa", and "Cata Con Tata". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label stereo pressing with Bell Sound stamp. Cover has a light bump in one corner, and a cutout hole – but this is a great copy overall.)

✨✧ Pete RodriguezAt Last ... LP
Remo, 1964. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Pre-boogaloo material from Pete Rodriguez – but still quite lively, in the manner of Joe Cuba, right before he cut his boogaloo sides! The album's a refreshing change from the early 60s pachanga groove – as Pete's group works hard on the percussion tip to strip down the grooves and give the proceedings a hard-edged finish. Vocals are by Richie Rodriguez and Alberto Gonzalez – and the album features two shorter descarga tracks, "Ya Tu Veras" and "La Magnifica", plus the tracks "Periquito", "Canallon", "No Quiero Lios", "Lo Se Todo", and "Oigan Companeros". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label pressing with silver text – a nice copy!)

✨✧ Pete RodriguezEl Conde ... LP
Fania, 1974. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The classic first album as a solo act from Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez – not the boogaloo artist with the same first and last name, but the singer who'd rose to fame on a series of classic albums with Johnny Pacheco! The style here is rich and soulful – a return to tradition in Latin male vocals, with roots that stretch past Pete's Puerto Rican homeland, and deep into 20th Century Afro-Cuban traditions. Arrangements are by Bobby Valentin, Louie Cruz, and Louie Ramirez – and the instrumentation mixes some 70s salsa brightness with the deeper tones of older years. Titles include "El Conde Negro", "Los Compadres", "Un Toque Pa Yambao", and "Lo Quiso Dios". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mexican pressing.)

✨✧ Pete RodriguezI Like It Like That (A Mi Me Gusta Asi) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Alegre/Craft, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic little album of Latin Soul – a perfect example of why Pete was known as the "King Of The Boogaloo" during the 60s! The group's having a non-stop party on the album – breaking it hard with heavy piano lines, rumbling bass underneath the grooves, tight timbales, and some shouted lyrics in English that are always very catchy. The title cut, "I Like It Like That", is the sort of groover that you'll be singing for years – even after hearing it only once – and the album's filled with other great cuts, like "Pete's Madness", "Micaela", "Si Quires Bailar", "Soiy El Rey" and "3 and 1". PachecoMi Nuevo Tumbao – Canonazo ... LP
Fania, 1964. Near Mint- ... $34.99
The first album on Fania Records – and a massive album that showcases Pacheco's new style – a shift from his earlier charanga grooves to a more solidly percussive style, with lots of timbales and trumpet! The album's a key turning point in 60s New York Latin – and still crackles with all the youthful energy it had back in the mid 60s. Pete Rodriguez is on vocals, and tracks include "El Kikiriki", "Fania", "Dakar, Punto Final", and "Como Mango". Nice cover, too – with Pacheco playing timbales in front of a big cannon! ✨✧ Diego RiveraWith Just A Word ... CD
Posi-Tone, 2024. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Rich-voiced tenor work from Diego Rivera, a player who just seems to get better and better with each new album as a leader! The set follows strongly on Diego's previous – and as with that one, features that top-shelf Posi-tone presentation – with a focus on original material, a strong group of sidemen, and a nicely unified vibe! Other players include Art Hirihara on piano, Luques Curtis on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – plus Pete Rodriguez on trumpet, also adding in some percussion at points that have a slightly Latin vibe. Titles include the originals "With Just A Word", "Tinte Latino", "Machete", and "Dignified Response". CD

Altin SencalarDiscover The Present ... CD
Posi-Tone, 2024. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
A standout set from trombonist Altin Sencalar – a player who seems to get better and better with each new record, not just for the soulful sound on his instrument, but also for his work as both a leader and writer of fresh new tunes! The record's got the tightness we love on the best Posi-tone label releases – and also features a slightly larger group too, with work from Diego Rivera on tenor, Markus Howell on alto and soprano, Anthony Hervey on trumpet, and Michael Dease on baritone – players who shift strongly between the solo work you'd know from their own albums as leaders, and a strong ensemble to color in Sencalar's tunes. Rhythms are great, too – and include work from Art Hirihara on piano, Paul Reyas Bueno on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – with occasional Latin currents from percussionist Pete Rodriguez. Titles include "Nuevo Dia", "The Sunday Affair", "Awareness", "Pocket Of Clave", "Blue Evening", "It's Easy", and "More Than One Answer". CD

✨✧ Ruben BladesFrom Panama To New York ... LP
Alegre, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Ruben Blades's first album – recorded shortly after his arrival in New York from Panama, with top-notch backing by the band of Pete Rodriguez! The album's an interesting one, in that it catches Ruben shortly before the salsa era, singing in a mix of styles that reminds us of some of Jimmy Sabater's work with Joe Cuba's group – doing mid and uptempo numbers in Spanish, and laying down a few mellower moments with the occasional English vocal! The style's not entirely Latin Soul, but not far off either – and the work is a nice contrast to the later work of Ruben. Titles include the lively groover "Descarga Caliente", the soulful "When", and the cuts "El Bravo", "De Panama A New York", "Donde", and "Hey Man". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original mono pressing! Back cover has a small amount of pen – but this is a great copy.)

✨✧ Orchestra HarlowHommy – A Latin Opera ... CD
Fania, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Orchestra Harlow's answer to the Who's Tommy – Hommy, a Latin Opera, and one of the few concept albums we know from the New York Latin scene of the time! The tracks are fairly short, and they're separated by short "interludes" throughout the album that feature some cool spoken bits that trace the story of the record, but which also have the humorous touches of some of the older Alegre All Stars albums from the 60s. And although Orchestra Harlow borrow the name of the Who's album, the work here is all original – not covers – two long "acts", spread out over the sides of the record with a sophisticated approach that shows the Harlow group moving into much deeper territory at the time. Lead vocals are by Junior Gonzalez, and you'll also hear Adalberto Santiago, Cheo Feliciano, Justo Betancourt, and Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez. Tracks include "Gracia Divina", "Mantecadito", "El Doctor Y La Razon", "Es Un Varon", "El Dia De Navidad", and "Soy Sensacional". CD

Willie RodriguezAt The Happenin' ... LP
Fonseca/Andale, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 19.99
Plenty happenin' here – a wealth of boogaloo grooves, mad Latin jazz riffs, and lots lots more – all served up on a platter that's easily one of the most cooking ever from trumpeter Willie Rodriguez! Like other releases on the Fonseca label, there's a nicely messed-up groove going on – a style that easily shifts between different Latin modes in search of the rawest sound possible – without any thought of mainstream convention, or the sort of straighter-laced sounds that might have played with the suburban crowds. Willie's band is clearly nice and youthful, and more than willing to follow his leadership – working equally well on both the English and Spanish language tunes on the set. Titles include "Boogaloo Hay", "Sansuyo", "Mi Guajira", "Mi Shingaling", "The Clock", "What You Want Is Boogaloo", "7th Ave Train", and the very tasty "Descarga El Bravo"! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Willie Rodriguez with Leo CasinoHeat Wave ... LP
Fonseca, 1965. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent early album from Latin leader/trumpeter Willie Rodriguez – one of his gems for the Fonseca label, with vocals from Leo Casino – a tight mix of Latin Soul, descarga, and salsa tracks that hit hard from the start and don't let up! Rodriguez leads a great band, and they're joined by vocalist Casino some of the tracks – with tunes that have an uncommon, heated intensity without sacrificing the groove – some of it with the feel of an after hours session full of players just hit with a mighty second wind, and others that are just straight up tirelessly driven. The whole set cooks really nicely! Titles include "Dig It", "Descarga DJ", "Pussycat Bugaloo", "Simon", A Mi Negra". "Golden Bugaloo", and "Chickie's Choice". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tito PuenteMaster Timbalero ... CD
Concord, 1993. Used ... $5.99
Proof that Tito Puente's later home at Concord Records was always a mighty nice fit – a move to a west coast outlet, which couldn't have been easy for the legendary New Yorker – but a place that always gave him a chance to cut no-nonsense Latin jazz sets like this! The group's got a bold, jazzy vibe throughout – thanks to strong horn work from reedmen Mario Rivera, Bobby Porcelli, and Michael James Turre – plus twin trombonists Sam Burtis and Jeff Cressman, and trumpeters Ray Vega and Ite Jerez! The mighty Sonny Bravo handles piano, and Bobby Rodriguez is on bass – so Tito's groove here cooks nicely throughout, especially given the extra line of percussionists on the set. Titles include "Azu Ki Ki", "Old Arrival", "Enchantment", "Sakura Sakura", "Vaya Puente", and "Sun Goddess". CD

✨✧ Don GoldieTrumpet Caliente (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Argo (Japan), 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Easily our favorite album ever from trumpeter Don Goldie – a record that really steps past his other sides, thanks to an excellent group! Players on the album are soul jazz heavyweights all the way through – with Leo Wright on alto and flute, Patti Brown on piano, Ben Tucker on bass, and Ray Barretto and Willie Rodriguez on percussion, giving the whole set a nice Latin swing! The "Caliente" in the set is all on the top of Goldie's sparkling trumpet lines – counterpoised nicely with the "bottom" of Tucker's bass and Brown's piano – and the session swings with a good earthy groove that we really love. Titles include the great samba swinger "I Hear A Rhapsody", plus "Goldie's Thing", "Fast Thought", and "Nightingale". CD
