✨✧ Dave Holland & Pepe HabichuelaHands ... CD
Dare 2, 2009. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Jazz bass great Dave Holland working in an inspired flamenco steeped setting – and it works very well! Holland holds the rhythm on wonderful way, and having the bass so prominent keeps the set somewhat grounded in jazz rather than straight flamenco. The great guitarist Pepe Habichulela leads the guitars, with Josemi and Carlos Carmona also on guitar, Israel Pirrina and Juan Carmona on cajon and percussion. Titles include "Hands", "Subi La Cuesta", "Camaron", "The Whirling Dervish", "Bailaor", "Joyride", "My Friend Dave". CD

Bobby CapoBobby Capo & His Orchestra ... LP
Pepe (Puerto Rico), Mid 1960s. Very Good ... $39.99
One of the most obscure albums ever issued by singer Bobby Capo – working here with a cool group that features four saxes, three trumpets, piano, bass, drums, and congas! Arrangements are mostly by Reyes Alfau – and titles include "Que Te Paso", "El Colmpay", "Balbina", "Cuatro Paredes", "La Razon", "Cachimbo", "Cuatro Paredes", and "Que Te Paso". 94 East Featuring PrinceDance To The Music Of The World ... CD
Charly (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A classic set of grooves from the Minneapolis scene – work that comes from the early days of Prince, when he was an up and coming talent on the scene – and which also continues a bit into early 80s years as well, even after he'd been signed to Warner Brothers! The exact nature of these cuts is always a bit obscured – they definitely feature some contributions from Prince and Andre Cymone, and sound very Prince-like too – but are usually presented under the aegis of Pepe Willie, who founded the group 94 East. The tracks are mostly instrumental, although there are a bit of female vocals – and titles include "If You Feel Like Dancin", "Lovin Cup", "Games", "Just Another Sucker", "Dance To The Music Of The World", "You Can Be My Teacher", "Better Than You Think", "If You See Me", "I'll Always Love You", and "One Man Jam". Orquesta AragonThat Cuban Cha Cha Cha ... CD
RCA, 1956. Used ... $6.99
A Cuban classic from Orquesta Aragon – recorded back in the days when US labels like RCA still had access to music being recorded in Havana! The style here is very much in keeping with the cha cha cha in the title – but it's also very much the Cuban variation, with a slightly more subtle, lyrical approach to the music – especially compared with some of the New York modes of the time. Instrumentation includes flue, violins, piano, bass, and percussion – and vocals are by Pepe Olmo and Fernando Alvarez. Titles include "Los Fantasmas", "Sabrosona", "Calculadora", "El Bodeguero", "Silencio", and "Senor Juez". CD

Death Is Not The End (UK), Late 1900s/1910s/1920s/1930s. New Copy ... $21.99 26.99
Not the crystal-clear flamenco music you might know from the years when the Spanish guitar style became a real favorite with audiophiles – and instead a whole host of early recordings from the 78rpm era – when recording qualities were very different, and flamenco tunes like these came across in a very different way! There's still the familiar guitar, vocals, and light percussion – but those elements are often collapsed and compressed into each other – which creates this very powerful sonic blend, even despite, or maybe because of, the lack of more distinct recording possibilities! It's almost as if these tracks are stripped down to more personal, human qualities – as you'll hear on titles by artists who include Pepe De La Malrona, Jose Cepero, Tomas Pavon, Juan Breva, La Nina De Los Peines, and La Andalucila. ✨✧ Chico FreemanMorning Prayer (with bonus track) ... CD
Why Not/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly our favorite album ever from Chico Freeman – a beautiful set that was originally issued only in Japan, and which has Chico hitting some of his strongest, most spiritual modes on record! The album features Freeman's reeds in the company of other Chicagoans – AACM players who include Henry Threadgill on saxes, Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, and Steve McCall on percussion – plus added work from Cecil McBee on bass and Ben Montgomery on drums – both players who round out the group with a very solid rhythmic focus. There's a bold sense of direction to this record that you don't always get in other work from Chico – a sound that's almost more Strata East at points, and which serves to bring the AACM players into sharp formation, and a strongly rhythmic orientation at times. The whole thing's wonderful – very well-crafted, and filled with spirit and soul – and titles include "The In Between", "Like The Kind Of Peace It Is", "Morning Prayer", "Pepe's Samba", and "Conversations". CD also features a bonus 19 minute version of "Pepe's Samba". CD

✨✧ Manu DibangoSoul Makossa ... CD
Unidisc (Canada), 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very nice compilation of some of the best of Manu Dibango's afro funky tracks from the early 70's! The folks at Unidisc licensed this stuff from Musidisc in France, and the set's got a lot of killer hard funky tracks, like the hit "Soul Makossa", plus "O Boso", "Pepe Soup", "Senga", "Mwasa Makossa", and "Super Kumba". There's a few weaker cuts, but most of this stuff kicks ass, and rocks with a hard afro funky groove that few other groups ever matched. And don't be fooled by other cheap compilations of his work, this is the original stuff! CD

✨✧ Mon RiveraMon Y Sus Trombones (aka Que Gente Avirigua) ... LP
Alegre/Vaya, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
70s issue of this classic – a great blend of Puerto Rican roots and some of the more sophisticated modes going down in the New York scene of the 60s – and a classic pre-salsa album from Mon Rivera! Rivera's got a small combo here who represent the hippest Alegre players of the time – both Charlie and Eddie Palmeri on piano, Mark Weinstein on trombone, and the legendary Kako on timbales – all backing up Mon with a sound that's rootsy, but which still has a fair bit of jazz as well. Styles include jazzy mambo and the plebochanga, a style that combines the plena and charanga – and overall, the album's got a really bouncy approach to the grooves – piano and percussion carrying most of the work, as vocals and horns come in over the top to sort things out a bit! Titles include "La Plechanga De Trabalengua", "Monina", "Una Plena", "Como Esta Pita", "En Casa De Pepe", and "La Cuca". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cesaria Evora & OthersClub Sodade ... CD
BMG (France), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Lovely stuff! The work of singer Cesara Evoria is remixed by a host of modern club talents – no surprise, as her best tracks of the past few years have been getting plenty of action on the 12" front – taking her from the world music scene into the clubs, with very surprising results! The record is really pretty darn wonderful overall – appealing to fans of a modern groove, but touched with all the depth, soul, and history of Cesara's fantastic voice. Titles include "Angola" remixed by Pepe Braddock, "Miss Perfumado" remixed by 4 Hero, "Nutridinha" remixed by Kerri Chandler, "Besame Mucho" remixed by Senor Coconut, "Angola" remixed by Carl Craig, "Negue" remixed by Chris Prolific, "Sangue De Beironia" remixed by Francois K, and "Bondade E Maldade" remixed by Osunlade. Dialogo (Italy), 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
A hell of a record from the Italian scene of the 70s – a heavy set of electric jazz with a soaring, righteous sort of vibe – served up by a quintet who somehow manage to work as if they've got the spirit of a much larger ensemble! We don't know any of the players at all from other records, but they come together wonderfully here – a lineup that includes trumpet and trombone from Gaetano Delfini, saxes and flute from Giancarlo Maurino, Fender Rhodes and piano from Corrado Nofri, bass from Peppe Caporello, and drums from Giampaolo Ascolese – all players who draw a lot more from the spiritual jazz underground of the time than some of the more prog-based acts on the Italian scene. Most tracks are nice and long, with a really soaring sort of vibe – and titles include "Peperoncino", "Rising", "Cabral Anno 1", and the shorter ballad "Una Ballata Per Yanez". LP, Vinyl record album
