Lothar & The Hand PeopleCome Along – The Exodus 1966 ... CD
Beat Rocket, 1966. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Lothar & The Hand People gave the world one of the greatest psych albums ever issued by Capitol Records – but this set of earlier recordings shows the group in a very different light – raw, noisy, and very garagey – much more in the territory of The Seeds or The Sonics! The recording is live, but feels more like it was captured in a small basement room than a larger rock club – as there's a very forward sound to the whole thing, as if the group were trying to rip the performance space out of its foundations, while they work their own rough-edged magic on tunes that are familiar, but which sound very different in this setting – a perfect illustration of the genius of garage at its best! The guitar lines are wonderful – and titles include "If I Have To Choose", "Walking The Dog", "Baby Please Don't Go", "Come Along", "Who's Been Talking", "Gloria", "That's Another Story", and "Nobody Knows". The first-ever live release of material from this really fantastic group – a long-haired space rock combo whose leader Lothar was a Moog! The group are a harder-edged psych combo at the core – but spacier touches from Lothar really open up their sound – and although their classic Capitol debut is an undisputed classic, there's a raw edge to this live performance that really expands our understanding of the group – almost more Detroit than we might have expected! Mostly Other People Do The KillingPaint ... CD
Hot Cup, 2017. Used ... $8.99
A genius new step for Mostly Other People Do The Killing – a group who manages to give us something completely different every time around – yet never come across with any sense of gimmick at all! Instead, they just leap into fresh modes with all their best creative energy, and come up with something that has us falling in love with them all over again – as they do here, working only as a trio this time around – but awash in as much color as you'd guess from the album's cover! The group features the mighty Moppa Elliott on bass – as fantastic as always – with Ron Stabinsky on piano and Kevin Shea on drums – a familiar structure for a lineup, but one that comes across with a very inventive quality – that "something different" vibe that's marked MOPDTK from the start – as much in love with jazz tradition as it is willing to change it. Pianist Stabinsky is incredibly fluid – spinning out notes that almost feel like they're coming faster than he can think – sparks of color that explode on the keys of the piano, on titles that include "Yellow House", "Orangeville", "Green Briar", "Golden Hill", "Whitehall", and "Plum Run". ✨✧ People Under The StairsOST ... LP
Om Records, 2002. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A stone classic from People Under The Stairs – a record that not only stands as some of their strongest work on wax, but which undeniably helped a lot of the west coast find a way forward after too many years stuck in the shadow of thuggish posturing! The set bristles with the kind of inventive production and lyricism that would unfold on the west coast in years to come – upbeat and positive at points, but without ever sounding weak, commercial, or watered down. The balance is key – and is what makes the record endure so strongly as the years go on – and tracks include "The Suite For Beaver parts 1 & 2", "OST(Original Soundtrack)", "Tales Of Kidd Drunkadelic", "Keepin It Live", "Empty Bottles Of Water", "The Outrage", "The Hang Loose", "The Double K Show", "Montego Slay", "8 Is Enuff", "The L.A. Song", "Acid Raindrops", "The Joyride", "The Breakdown", "The Dig", and "The Heat". LP, Vinyl record album

People's Pleasure with Alive & WellDo You Hear Me Talkin To You (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus track) ... CD
Brownstone/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $24.99
A very cool combo from the LA scene of the 70s – a tight funky group, topped with two female soul singers – all working together in a style that's got a wonderful mixture of warmer edges and grittier sounds at the core! The two female singers really give the set a unique vibe – as they help bring focus to the instrumentation of the group, with a lot more presence than the usual throw-in female vocals of the time – hardly the backing chorus mode of a disco record, and instead a great balance to the sharp guitar lines and keyboards from the musicians! We've not heard of any of the players in any other setting, but they're very good – clearly able to handle jazz if they want, but aimed here towards a sophisticated funk style that's equally great on the mellow steppers as it is on the more upbeat tracks. Titles include "Heavenly Feeling", "World Full Of People", "Do You Hear Me Talking To You", "Dreaming Our Lives Away", "A Thank You Song", "Fantasies & Dreams", and "I'd Like To Stay". CD features a bonus 7" mix of "I'd Like To Stay". CD

People's WorkshopHouston Talent Expo 1982 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
BBE (UK), 1982. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99 26.99
The cover might look a bit understated, but the album's got plenty of depth and power – a rare set from the Texas underground of the early 80s – cut by a group who've clearly drunk deep from the same musical well that inspired Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers, and other cosmic soul talents of the 70s! As with Stevie and Roy, there's plenty of jazzy currents in the music of The People's Workshop – warm keyboards, sweet sax and flute, and waves of color that really come through the grooves and illuminate the deeper spirit of the vocals. There's a sense of collaboration here that's really special – almost a James Mason vibe at times – all with a sense of sophistication that's quite different than the rootsier sounds you might normally expect from Texas soul groups. Titles include "Save Your Money", "A Song For The Children", "Love Love", "Let's Get High", "Chocolate Coated People Song", and "This Song". LP, Vinyl record album

PRO (People Rock Outfit)Blacky Joe (180 gram pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
EMI/Soundway (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
The People Rock Outfit really knock it out of the park with this dark-edged classic from the 70s – one of the heaviest albums we've heard from the Nigerian scene at the time, and a record that's almost got more of a South African spirit overall! These guys effortlessly mix together funk and psych – the former in these stark, forward-moving rhythnm that are mighty nice – the latter in these long-spun guitar lines that have a nice fuzzy vibe, as the solos cascade effortlessly from the hands of the guitarist! Vocals are all in English – sometimes with a slow-stepping approach that's very moody, more often in a lively spirit to match the rhythms – and the record also features a bit of guest work on moog and Hammond, which really adds a lot to the sound. Titles include "Blacky Joe", "Mary Jane", "Faded Jeans", "Freedom", "Movement", "Tell Me", "Midnight Woman", and "Looking Round". LP, Vinyl record album

Reel People (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Excellent remix version of Reel People's fantastic Retroflection – one that you can almost look to as an equally great alternative version of it – with remixes by Atjazz, John Morales, Terry Hunter, Tall Black Guy, DJ Spinna and others! The warmly collaborative spirit of the original album – with guest vocals by Angie Stone, Navasha Daya, Anthony David, Omar and others – makes this kind of a companion piece a natural fit. The remixers wisely hew to the gliding soul with jazzy touches that make Retroflection such a strong, standout work, while bringing in elements of club soul, jazzy samba, and timeless disco, depending on the producer/remixer. Titles include "Don't Stop The Music (Art Of Tones Modern Disco Mix)", "I Want To Thank You (Sebb Junior Remix)", "Thinking About Your Love (Da Brownie Remix)", "Keep It Up (DJ Spinna Galactic Funk Remix)", "I'm In Love (Buscrates Remix)", "Buttercup (Terry Hunter Main Club Mix", "Always There (Scott Diaz Funk Excursion)", and "Can We Pretend (Tall Black Guy Samba Remix)". Tomorrow's PeopleOpen Soul ... LP
Stage Productions/P-Vine (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... About May 20, 2021
A very obscure set from Chicago! The group's an ensemble funk one – with a hard jamming sound that's clearly influenced by the city's Earth Wind & Fire, but not nearly as slick or as broadly spiritual in scope – but the grittier approach here works on a really deep level! The standout, and increasingly legendary cut on the album is the 20 minute "Open Soul" – an album-side jammer that has lots of vamping and hard grooving, and just a little bit of singing – but the other side's equally great, with shorter soul tracks that have a nice harmony vocal approach. Titles include "Hurt Perversion", "It Ain't Fair", "Lovers To Friends", and "Hurry On Up Tomorrow". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ People's ChoiceTurn Me Loose ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1978. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the crowning achievements of People's Choice – a very hip group on the Philly scene, but one who spent most of their early years just releasing excellent (but under-circulated) 7" singles! By the time they arrived at the Philadelphia International label, the group was razor-sharp, and right at the top of their game – schooled in funk and soul, and almost more self-contained than some of the other artists who worked with Gamble & Huff! The set was recorded at Sigma Sound, but has a leaner sound than some of the disco productions of the time – more funky soul, turned towards a 70s club mode – with excellent vocals from Valerie Brown, who shares lead spotlight with longtime group member Frankie Brunson. Titles include the nice mellow stepper "Soft & Tender", plus "Rough Ride", "Stay With Me", "A Greater Truth", "Your Love Stays On My Mind", and "Turn Me Loose". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Village PeopleVillage People ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The debut of a legend – and a record that, we hate to admit it, must have actually had some political and cultural punch at the time – especially as the group had yet to go onto super-stardom, and were here stepping out with a butch camp, all-gay style that still had some power in the immediate post-Stonewall years. The approach here is similar to their later hits, but also nicely grounded in the standard disco mode of the time – thanks to some vocal arrangements from Phil Hurtt, and soulful string and horn backings from Horace Ott. Tracks are long, and as gay as you'd expect – but it's also not like the group's making fun of themselves as much yet either. Titles include "Fire Island", "Village People", "San Francisco", and "In Hollywood". LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1969. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the best psych albums we've ever heard on Capitol from the 60s – an introspective session with lots of space, sounds, and plenty of dark corners! The album reminds us a lot of work by Gandalf, who also recorded for Capitol at the time – very laid back at times, with a gentle approach to the music that also lapsed into some jazzy phrasing at certain points. Quite nice overall, with a really great little sound – and titles that include "This Life She Is Mine", "Girl Said", "Land Of A Day", "Hudson Hill Feeling", "They Didn't Even Go To The Future", "Soon There'll Be Thunder", "Those Who Love", and "Why Must I Be". Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". The cover's black and white, but the album's filled with wonderful colors in sound – a bold array of work from pianist Donald Brown – working here with a hip lineup that includes Vincent Herring on alto and soprano sax, Tom Harrell on trumpet, and Steve Nelson on vibes! Nelson's sharp, chromatic tones really bring a lot to the record – and they're nicely balanced by Brown's work on the keys – sometimes soft and soulful, other times bold and modern – pulling all players along in his sweep. Titles include "Booker T", "Reruns From The 60s", "Prism", "Gaslight", and "The Biscuit Man" – and the album also includes the warmly grooving vocal tune "I Love It When You Dance That Way", sung by Lenora Helm. We hardly need to tell you how hard the first two albums are to find – and if you've gotten the other Brunswick soul reissues from Edsel, you know that the packaging and quality is amazing – often better than the originals. This is Free Design's legendary album for children – referred to in the title as "very important people" – and it's a strangely hip set of tracks designed to get the kids to open up in a groovy late 60s kind of way. Given that the Free Design always sounded like a bunch of hippy kids, the setting is perfect for them – and they dreamily make their way through a great set of nearly all original tracks that sparkle with an innocent charm that's slyly deeper than you'd guess from the kid-orientation of the set! A classic bit of southern funky rock from Roy Head – an artist who's in the same territory here as Tony Joe White on his early albums for Monument! Like Tony on those gems, Roy's got a heavy dose of soul in his music – produced to perfection by Huey P Meaux, who was handling plenty of work from the deeper side of the southern spectrum at the time, and who makes Head sound fantastic here with a vibe that's kind of in a Texas-meets-Muscle Shoals sort of style! There's a great core group – heavy on organ, riffing guitar, and a tight team of trumpet and tenor – and the heavy drums on the set make it super nice and funky! Sampled by Tribe Called Quest, Lord Finesse, and others – and with the cuts "Soul Train", "Neighbor Neighbor", "Don't Want To Make It Too Funky", "Trying To Reach My Goal", "Same People", "Mama Mama", "Driving Wheel", and the break-heavy "Double Your Satisfaction". Loads of great percussion too – and titles include "Loco Love Motor", "Mondo No", "Krypto Blues", "Ma ne Vale La Pena", "90th Compleanno", and "Sara Stato Il Futuro". LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor, 1973. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Wonderful work from the great Ellen McIllwaine! Ellen's certainly not a soul artist – but she's got a particularly soulful approach to folk rock – one that's made her a favorite of groovers worldwide in the past few decades, thanks to a big push from Gilles Peterson, and the club scene in Tokyo and Germany! The approach on this record is kind of like a mixture between Chaka Khan and Joni Mitchell – lots of upbeat grooves, mixed with jazzy acoustic guitar and some wonderfully soaring vocals – in a style that needs to be heard to be fully understood. The standout cut is the amazing "Jimmy Jean", a soaring jazzy dance cut with unbelievable vocals – and other nice ones include "Sliding", "Ain't No Two Ways", and "All To You". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the freshest American underground records we've heard in a long time – and a cosmically soulful set that's every bit as great as anything coming out of the current London scene! Maryland-based Pixel work in a spacey blend of house and future soul – giving equal parts to both aspects of the work, and shifting easily in mood and tone from track to track. A few notches to one side, and this might just be a one-off album of dance tracks – but thanks to a keen vision from producer Kwesi Dawes, the record pushes forward with a brilliant post-4Hero mix of keys, beats, and righteous vocals! The whole thing's great – the kind of debut that would be looming large if it was issued on one of those fancy import labels – and titles include "The Spirit Of Love", "Anger Against My Face", "Freedom", "Space Explorers", "People Need People", "Do You Miss Me", "Monkey Boy", and "Future Town". Monitor, 1975. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really unique little record – an album of original songs based on older tradition, and one that interweaves elements of Portuguese culture with deeper roots of Angolan music! Lilly Tchiumba penned all the tracks herself, and sings in the Angolan language of Kimbundu – but there's a mix of percussion, guitar, and soaring vocals that echoes strongly with rootsier Brazilian, Cuban, and Haitian styles too – maybe in part because the Monitor label did such a wonderful job of recording the songs, and giving them this righteous, powerful vibe that still holds up strongly over the years! And by all of that, we almost mean that there's this sort of trans-global power to the whole record – one that moves beyond just a regional expression of culture, and past any sort of basic ethnographic mode – a lot like the Songs Of Protest album by Zelia Barbosa, also on the Monitor label. Titles include "Manazinha", "Gilagi Bu Kanga", "N'Zambi", "Mona Ki N'Gui Xissa", "Luanda M'Bolo", and "Kubata Di Rosinha". CD

Seminal work from one of the 70s greatest groups! Great stuff all around, with the righteous social tunes "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to The People", "Trouble's A Comin", and "We Are Neighbors" – plus classic love songs "Have You Seen Her" and "Love Uprising", which are still kind of the band's strongest point. Stan Getz and Kenny Barron – a perfect pairing on the famous People Time record! The album was recorded quite late in Stan's career, but it also represented a new flowering too – a wonderfully mature approach to tenor sax that mixed up all the dark corners and warm moments of previous years, given beautifully subtle accompaniment in the piano of Barron. Kenny's got a way of doing a lot with a little – just like Stan – and their pairing here quickly became the stuff of legend, once the album was released. Jimmy plays a range of reeds here – tenor, clarinet, and flute – and he works with bass and drum accompaniment, but often in a really gentle way that allows his own solo energy to dictate the tunes – coming out in space that's boldly soulful on the tenor, yet more fragile and intimate on the flute – kind of a cross between more expressive avant work and some of the more spiritual tones of the time. The tenor tunes are especially great – kind of opening a new chapter for Giuffre's career – and titles include "The Bird", "Mosquito Dance", "The Chanting", "The Butterfly", "Dervish", "Phoenix", and "Night Dance". Just when you thought Prince Paul and Cat Power would never make a record together PRESTO – it's the new Handsome Boy album! HBMS takes a bit more of a chillout tack with this long overdue second opus – with lots of laidback beats and samples, and a surprising amount of live instrumentation! The gleeful, sarcastic comedy of the stellar first album remains intact, with some genuinely amusing skits (including one with Jay Z appearing under the pseudonym Hines Buchanan), and the deep range of guest vocalists isn't as surprising as how strong their work is in the best tunes. It would have been pretty easy for Prince Paul and Automator to find a bunch of interesting names to flesh out their big pop culture frappe, but something else altogether to make trippy hip hop tracks featuring Cat Power and the Hieroglyphics make sense on the same record. A pretty solid set from the most adventurous pseudo duo in the game! One of our favorite records ever by Roy Haynes – a lyrical masterpiece that stands with his best work of the 60s! The set features some wonderful playing by Frank Strozier – who's handling both alto and flute on the set, grooving around like he did on his own great Riverside albums of the period, or on Haynes' excellent Cymbalism set, to which this one is a nice partner. The songs on here are a bit less hip than on that album – as many of them are 60s standards, like "People", "Mr Lucky", "Wives & Lovers", "Invitation", and "What Kind Of Fool Am I" – but they're done with a lot imagination, and a soulful modal groove that really opens them up! One of Johnny Lytle's most righteous albums ever – a soaring, spacious set that's almost to Lytle's career what Gears was to Johnny Hammond's! Of course, Lytle's groove here is different – no Mizell production, and a mellower feel overall – but the unbridled space of 70s Milestone is definitely a key influence here – and Johnny stretches out here like never before! The players are all pretty hip – and include Daahoud Hadi (aka Butch Cornell) on electric piano and organ, Marvin Cabell on flute and tenor, Bob Cranshaw on bass, Betty Glamann on harp, and Jozell Carter on drums – all perfect mates here for Johnny's spiritual exploration of sound with his vibes – in ways that are almost more amazing than work from Bobby Hutcherson or Roy Ayers at the time! Excellent heavy funk from Stax! Black Nasty were one of the heaviest groups on the label – with a rock-solid guitar-based groove that went even farther than the Bar-Kays, who were no slouch in the guitar department themselves! The grooves are all slow to midtempo, with the band coming down hard on the downbeats, jamming away in a style that sounds more like heavy Detroit Westbound than sweetly soulful Memphis. Most all cuts have vocals – sung in a shouting style by the band that works well with the tripped-out hooks of the songs. This was the only album the band ever cut, but it's become a fast favorite among those who like their funk raw. Tracks include "We're Doin Our Thing", "Rushin Sea", "Booger The Hooker", "Black Nasty Boogie", "Nasty Soul", and "Getting Funky Round Here". LP, Vinyl record album

Brunswick/ORG, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Seminal work from one of the 70s greatest groups! The band had always been great at love songs and uptempo numbers – but this record has them moving into more righteous area, picking up on some of the more socially conscious soul of their generation that had been working its way up the charts. The album features excellent production by Chi-Lite Eugene Record, who also wrote a lot of the material – plus arrangements by Tom Tom and Sonny Sanders. Great stuff all around, with the righteous social tunes "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to The People", "Trouble's A Comin", and "We Are Neighbors" – plus classic love songs "Have You Seen Her" and "Love Uprising", which are still kind of the band's strongest point. Loads more great stuff on this one, the album that helped the second wave of Chicago soul break out into the international market! LP, Vinyl record album

Milestone, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of Joe Henderson's greatest albums ever – a real treasure from his electric years at Milestone Records, and a set that showed he really had a lot more to offer for the scene of the 70s! The sound here is quite different than Joe's earlier work for Blue Note – a style that's sometimes soaring, sometimes mellow – but always moving forward with a tremendously fluid approach to the tenor sax. Joe's sense of phrasing and timing is impeccable – quite subtle at times, with these dark notes that hang beautifully in air on the ballads – and some sharper-edged qualities that really burst out strongly on the more upbeat tunes. The group's a great one too – and features Herbie Hancock on both acoustic and electric piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – plus additional trumpet by Mike Lawrence on 2 tracks. Titles include "Black Narcissus", "Isotope", "Afro-Centric", "Forsight & Afterthought", and "Power to The People". CD

The early 70s last hurrah for the Mamas & The Papas – rich harmonies and a surprisingly creative breadth of styles on this long-delayed final album! The Cali rock scene, and the world at large, where quite a different in 1971 than they were in the late 60s – and to the Mamas & The Papas credit, they're really not out to replicate past glories. The vocals are still sweet and soaring, and there's an upbeat vibe, but it's more laidback one. It's got a bit of an early 70s soft rock vibe, which we love! The spiritual sound of drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo is alive and well – the one light still burning from the legendary Blue Notes jazz ensemble from South Africa – and one who's taken the righteous power of that group well into the 21st Century! The music here is as uplifting as the title – and features Louis working with a very powerful group of younger musicians – including the excellent Shabaka Hutchings and Jason Yarde on saxes, plus Alexander Hawkins on piano and John Edwards on bass – musicians who rise up with this fantastically united power under the leadership of Moholo-Moholo, flowing together at the start, then finding confidence in their individual voices as the performance moves on. The whole thing was recorded live, and is a beautiful extended concert – with titles that include "Dikeledi Tsa Phelo", "Do It", "Ezontakana", "Ngwoele Ngwoele", "Angel Nomali", "Lakutshon'Llanga", "For The Blue Notes", and "B My Dear". This album may well be Tony's masterpiece – a long tone poem love letter to New York – narrated by Tony, but filled with sounds that he captured on his travels around the city – people, ships, machines, animals, vehicles, and lots lots more – all with a keen ear for the vibrancy of the New York story at its best – the kind of true promise the city has to offer, captured here in an array of actual sounds from the postwar years! ✨✧ Archie SheppThings Have Got To Change/Cry Of My People ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 1971/1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of Impulse Records classics from Archie Shepp! Things Have Got To Change is wonderful post-Paris work from Archie Shepp – a record that has him bringing more focus back into his work after sessions overseas – and also making some great use of the legendary Joe Lee Wilson on vocals! There's a feeling here that's a real change for Shepp, but a great one too – a sound that's trying to reach new levels of expression in jazz – with a bit less of the sharp edges of the 60s, and more of the warmer, more righteous modes of the post-Coltrane generation. Wilson's vocals really help Shepp achieve those aims – by adding a lyrical balance to the tunes, and imbuing them with additional messages beyond the instrumentation – especially on the extended suite "Money Blues", which takes up all of side one. Also important is Cal Massey, who composed two of the tracks on the set, and also plays electric piano alongside Shepp in a spare duet on the beautiful "Dr King The Peaceful Warrior". Other players include Grachan Moncur and Charles Greenlee on trombones, Billy Butler on guitar, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Ted Daniels on trumpet – and Romulus Franceschini adds some electronic music on "Things Have Got To Change". Cry Of My People is one of the most righteous albums ever from Archie Shepp – a beautiful late Impulse set of grooves, and a record that matches the genius of Attica Blues! Shepp's working with a losse collective of players that includes Charles Greenlee, Harold Mabern, and Beaver Harris – plus vocalists like Joe Lee Wilson and Peggie Blue – all to craft a set of tunes that are as righteous and political as they are spiritual and soulful! The great Cal Massey handled arrangements on a number of the tracks on the set – bringing together the players with a wonderfully unified feel, pushing away the easy spirituality of earlier records to forge a massively powerful sound – and Shepp matches his great efforts by blowing some of his most soulful lines on record! Titles include the wonderful "African Drum Suite (parts 1 & 2)", plus "A Prayer", "Cry Of My People", "The Lady", "All God's Children Got A Home In The Universe", and "Rest Enough". CD

People/Universal (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A supremely fantastic album, and one that's always woefully overlooked in discussions of James Brown's incredible People label! Sweet Charles, Charles Sherell, was a great lost soul vocalist who had a voice that was warm and mellow, with a sweetness that was often missing from James' singing – but which sounded great with his arrangements and production. Fred Wesley and Dave Matthews arranged this one and only album, and the record's a great blend of sweet soul tracks, funky numbers, and other stellar grooves. There's a killer version of "Soul Man", that begins with a very tasty break; the monster "Yes, It's You", which has a sweetly sliding intro that's ripe for sampling; the righteous political "Why Can't I Be Treated Like A Man" – and lots of other nice ones too! Amazing rare soul from the 80s – most of it so obscure, it hardly got any circulation at the time! The package was put together by Peoples Potential – that ultra-hip label that's dedicated to finding funk so rare, few folks have ever heard it before – including unreleased nuggets by obscure local acts around the country, most of whom never got any notice outside their immediate region! Because of that, the set's an amazing discovery in music – filled with tremendous little cuts we'd never have stumbled upon otherwise – wicked groovers that are heavy in boogie influences, but also run a nice spectrum of 80s groove – with some occasional old school influences thrown into the mix as well. Almost all tracks are uptempo, and there's a nicely low-fi aesthetic that unites all these cuts from disparate sources – titles that include "Tasty Tune" by Minority Band, "Universal Language" by Ballplayers, "Get The Feelin" by TMS, "Time To Throw Down" by JPs Force, "Hold That Groove" by Jim Bennett, "Candy Man" by Caprice, "Mizz Mean" by Saavy, "You Know I Love You" by George Smallwood, "All Party People" by Mix-O-Rap, "By My Side" by Checker Kabb, "Rejuvenate The Funk" by Satellite Band, "Funky Beat" by Crunch, and "Message In The Music" by Initials. People, 1974. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
An oft-overlooked gem from the JBs – their last album for People Records, and a stone funk classic that's every bit as essential as the others! The band is still in fine fine form – with none of the fast-funk or proto-disco of some later recordings – and they're working here in some really tight song formats that almost go back to the early days of the group's first few singles. The album's filled with great playing, wonderful grooves, and Fred Wesley's keen sense of humor – which sparks the whole set with a sense of warmth and creative play that show why the JBs are still the greatest funk band ever. Includes the excellent "Little Boy Black", which begins with some tasty James Brown vocals; the oft-sampled "Rockin' Funky Watergate"; plus "Step Child", "Makin Love", and "Rice & Ribs". Not as drawn out as Doing It To Death, but more complicated than Food For Thought, and still a totally essential bit of funk! LP, Vinyl record album

People/Robinsongs (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
Essential funk in a single set – three killer albums from James Brown's legendary backing group! First up is Food For Thought – the classic first album by The JBs – James Brown's Fred Wesley-led backing band, and the force behind most of his greatest records of the early 70s! The band are incredible at this point – sharper, harder, and funkier than just about any other combo around – and that includes all the thousands of groups in the funky 45 underground who were always trying to copy their sound, but never got things this right! Not only are the rhythms the stuff of legend – but the use of the instruments is far far above the norm – as can be heard on the mindblowing "The Grunt", which was sampled heavily by Public Enemy to great fame – and which features a saxophone solo that sounds more like a whistling tea kettle! The set collects some of the group's best early singles, and includes all of the short little funky cuts that made them a legend right out of the box – "Pass the Peas", "The Grunt", "These Are The JBs", "Hot Pants Road", "Wine Spot", "To My Brother", "Blessed Blackness", "Theme From King Heroin", "Escapism (parts 1 & 2), and "Gimme Some More" – all together here in one tight little album of massive funky hard beats and breaks! Doing It To Death is an incredible album – a landmark piece of funk that nobody should be without, funk fan or not! The album is the second to feature James Brown's famous backing combo of the early 70s – and unlike their first one, which was really more of a collection of singles, this album has the group playing hard, long, and loud, in the free funk improvisational mode that was James' real contribution to the music at the time. The tracks are all incredibly long, with James at the forefront, egging the band on with shouts and comments – but also letting them open up large instrumentally, playing in a mode that's as much jazz as it is funky soul. The whole thing's peppered with some nice shorter segues between tracks – but the long cuts are the winners, and are some of the best funk ever recorded! Titles include "Mo Peas", "Doing It To Death", "La Di Da La Di Day", "You Can Have Watergate, Just Gimme Some Bucks & I'll Be Straight", and "Sucker". Last up is Damn Right I Am Somebody – quite possibly our favorite record by the JBs, ever! The set starts with a wonderful conversational bit – rapping and musing on the idea of "Damn Right, I Am Somebody" – showing the group in a political and righteous mode for the first time ever. The grooves then kick in – with the same heavy funk as on earlier records, but also a nice nod towards experimental production – from strange fade ups and fade downs, to stark time and rhythm changes, and even bits of electronics used to create some very cool moments in the grooves! The whole thing's as dead funky as can be, and is stuffed with insane classics like "Blow Your Head", "Same Beat", "Damn Right I am Somebody", "I'm Payin' Taxes, What am I Buyin'", and a great cover of Marvin Gaye's "You Sure Love to Ball"!
