Common PeopleOf The People, By The People, For The People ... CD
Capitol/Acid Symposium (Greece), 1969. New Copy ... $3.99
One of the best psyche albums we've ever heard on Capitol from the 60s – an introspective session with lots of space, sounds, and plenty of dark corners! The album reminds us a lot of work by Gandalf, who also recorded for Capitol at the time – very laid back at times, with a gentle approach to the music that also lapsed into some jazzy phrasing at certain points. Quite nice overall, with a really great little sound – and titles that include "This Life She Is Mine", "Girl Said", "Land Of A Day", "Hudson Hill Feeling", "They Didn't Even Go To The Future", "Soon There'll Be Thunder", "Those Who Love", and "Why Must I Be". Lothar & The Hand PeopleSpace Hymn ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $43.99
A great little group – with music as wonderful as their name! Lothar & The Hand People sprung out of the post-folk years of the mid 60s – bringing together styles that had an earthier touch, with others that shared more in the proto-psyche of the time, and which also had a bit of a cosmic influence. And while at their core, the group had a sound that was shared by a number of groups at the time – somewhere in between Byrds-esque down-homeyness and sunshine psyche – they also had a knack for pulling in unusual instrumentation, creating some great "curve ball" moments that really kept their albums interesting. An incredibly righteous set from Lloyd Parks and his We The People band – a record that may well even top some of the most soulful sets of the roots reggae years! Parks is both bassist and singer on the set – and his strong tones on the bottom really define the slow-stepping rhythms – followed by the group with excellent riffing guitar from Winston Bowen and bobbling organ from Franklyn Waul – all recorded at Joe Gibbs', and featuring the top of Parks' mighty talents – from songwriting, through arranging, to the production for the whole album! Titles include "Reality", "Life Ain't Easy", "Ordinary Man", "Trench Town Girl", "I want To Go Home", and "Ah Rock Dis Yah Bass Line". LP, Vinyl record album

People's Choir Of Operation PushPeople's Choir Of Operation Push ... LP
Truth/Stax, 1973. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A gospel album, to be sure, but also one with a pretty darn hip sound – as it's directed by Reverand Marvin Yancy (of The Independents, a group that featured Jesse Jackson's brother Chuck), and arrangements by Gene Barge, who did a lot of hip work for Chess/Cadet. Most tracks have a hip soul style that's not that different from other gospelly soul on Stax – like work by The Staple Singers or Rance Allen – and the album features a cover of "Love Train", plus the tracks "Pass Me Not", "I'm A Child Of The King", "The Push Is On", and "One More Day". People's Pleasure with Alive & WellDo You Hear Me Talkin To You ... LP
Brownstone/Athens Of The North (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A very cool combo from the LA scene of the 70s – a tight funky group, topped with two female soul singers – all working together in a style that's got a wonderful mixture of warmer edges and grittier sounds at the core! The two female singers really give the set a unique vibe – as they help bring focus to the instrumentation of the group, with a lot more presence than the usual throw-in female vocals of the time – hardly the backing chorus mode of a disco record, and instead a great balance to the sharp guitar lines and keyboards from the musicians! We've not heard of any of the players in any other setting, but they're very good – clearly able to handle jazz if they want, but aimed here towards a sophisticated funk style that's equally great on the mellow steppers as it is on the more upbeat tracks. Titles include "Heavenly Feeling", "World Full Of People", "Do You Hear Me Talking To You", "Dreaming Our Lives Away", "A Thank You Song", "Fantasies & Dreams", and "I'd Like To Stay". Reel PeopleRetroflection Remixed ... CD
Reel People (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Excellent remix version of Reel People's fantastic Retroflection – one that you can almost look to as an equally great alternative version of it – with remixes by Atjazz, John Morales, Terry Hunter, Tall Black Guy, DJ Spinna and others! The warmly collaborative spirit of the original album – with guest vocals by Angie Stone, Navasha Daya, Anthony David, Omar and others – makes this kind of a companion piece a natural fit. The remixers wisely hew to the gliding soul with jazzy touches that make Retroflection such a strong, standout work, while bringing in elements of club soul, jazzy samba, and timeless disco, depending on the producer/remixer. Titles include "Don't Stop The Music (Art Of Tones Modern Disco Mix)", "I Want To Thank You (Sebb Junior Remix)", "Thinking About Your Love (Da Brownie Remix)", "Keep It Up (DJ Spinna Galactic Funk Remix)", "I'm In Love (Buscrates Remix)", "Buttercup (Terry Hunter Main Club Mix", "Always There (Scott Diaz Funk Excursion)", and "Can We Pretend (Tall Black Guy Samba Remix)". An excellent double-length set from Horace Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra – an extremely righteous ensemble that was one of the hippest things going on the LA jazz scene of the 70s! The vibe is free and spiritual, but it also has a wonderful groove pulsating underneath many of the tracks – that heir to the Impulse Records style that Tapscott and other Nimbus Records artists carried on well into the early 80s. The group here features some of Tapscott's Nimbus labelmates – including Sabir Matteen and Billy Harris on tenor saxes, Linda Hill on piano, Adele Sebastian on flute, Roberto Miranda on bass, and Jesse Sharps on soprano sax – and in a way, the album's almost a live summation of all the mighty talents brewing on the Nimbus label at the time! Tracks are all quite long, and titles include a great version of Sebastian's "Desert Fairy Princess", plus "Macrame", "Future Sally's Time", "Noissessprahs", "Village Dance", "LTT", and "Lift Every Voice". Tiliqua Records (Japan), 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99
Sweet late 70s folk from Tree People – recorded in Oregon in 1979 and led by some ragged, beautiful acoustic guitar and loose lead vocals by Stephen Cohen – fleshed out by some trippy, hypnotic hand percussion, flute and bass! The Tree People really find a naturalistic, honest and unpredictable sound – with the same instrumentation that lesser talent makes a meek hippy jam sessions with in coffee shops and basements all over America. Tree person Stephen Cohen also has an instrumental piece on the Numero Group release Wayfaring Strangers – Guitar Soli, so pick that one up, too, if you haven't already! "Stranger", Sliding", "Pot Of Gold", "Opus", "Morning Song", "Space Heater", "Pineapple Song", "No More School" and "Bring In The Water". CD

Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
People's Choice have the rhythm – as they did right from the very start, when they were first cutting records as a late 60s funk combo in Philly! The style here is more late 70s club, handled with perfection by the team of Gamble & Huff – but the PC approach is still a lot more funk than some of their contemporaries – with lots of sharp, live rhythms at the bottom of the grooves – and plenty of sweet keyboards from leader Frankie Brunson! Brunson sings a bit too, but the group seem to balance out the sound with lots of instrumental moments – and titles include "Here We Go Again", "Jam Jam Jam", "We Got The Rhythm", "Cold Blooded & Downright Funky", and "Opus De Funk". International Hits, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unique funky gem – and a near-legendary single from Scorpio & His People! "Unforgiven" has a brilliant blend of deep funk and falsetto vocals – stepping slowly over the top with a surprising amount of power, while the band turns, dips, and chugs along heavily at the bottom – all with a bad-strutting groove that's heavy on the bassy end of the spectrum – which makes for a great contast to the lyrics! "Theme From Movietown Sound" has a similar blend, but a different groove too – thanks to these heavy piano lines that roll back and forth with the rhythms! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Strange Disc, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the rarest albums of the 70s to bear the name of Rudy Ray Moore – even though the raunchy comedian only starred in the film, and didn't create the music! Instead, the grooves here were handled by the obscure Juice People Unlimited – a clubby combo who've got just the right talents for the setting in the title – and whose lineup includes drums from the great James Gadson, and guitar by Paul Jackson Jr! These guys are top-level studio cats, working in a slightly looser setting – which has them spinning out four long funk tracks, all at a length that must have been cut down and edited to heck in the film. Most vocals have a funk-styled chorus mode – but the set does include one straighter funky soul cut, "I Never Wanted To Say Goodbye" – alongside "Spaced Out", "Disco Godfather", and "Shermanizing/One Way Ticket To Hell". Fantastic work from a group who never fail to blow our minds – and who also seem to try out something different with each new record, yet never falter at all in their progress forward! Mostly Other People Do The Killing may have one of the longest names in jazz, but they've also got a brash approach that really lives up to the cockiness of their name – a confident step in whatever direction they want, which always leads them down the best path. This time around, they're mixing both modern and trad jazz expressions with literary inspiration from writers who include Thomas Pynchon, Kurt Vonnegut, James Joyce, Cormac McCarthy, and David Foster Wallace – each of whom are listed as reference points for certain songs – which are based around snippets of their text, then transformed into a musical mode. The instrumentation is a very offbeat take on trad – with Jon Irabgon on tenor and sopranino sax, Steven Bernstein on trumpet and slide trumpet, Dave Taylor on bass trombone, Brandon Seabrook on banjo and electronics, Kevin Shea on drums, Ron Stabinsky on piano, and leader Moppa Elliott on bass. Titles include "Kilgore", "Hi Nella", "Honey Hole", "Bloomsberg", "Glen Riddle", "Mason & Dixon", and "Five". CD

Papa (UK), 2018. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Navasha Daya is light years away from her roots with Fertile Ground – singing here on two massive cuts from Reel People – both of which elevate her to legendary soul diva status! Daya is incredible on the version of the Kashif tune "I'm In Love" – hitting a level that might only be reserved for a rare few, like Chaka Khan or Jean Carn – and even though the tune is a catchy boogie number, Navasha's presentation makes the whole thing feel like a statement of spiritual soul! "Can't Fake The Feeling" is a classic from Geraldine Hunt – but Hunt never gave the tune the depth that it gets here – really soaring with Navasha's tremendous vocals, and given superb grooves from Oli Lazarus, Matt Cooper, and the rest of the Reel People team. A pricey limited single – but one that really delivers the goods! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Hot Cup, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest records we've heard so far from this ultra-hip ensemble – the group's own version of the classic Miles Davis album Kind Of Blue – played in track by track sequence, but with a lot of the group's own flavors on the solos, even though they follow the originals very strongly too! The tracks are all long and wonderful – and done in a style that's quite faithful to the original, but as a way of showing these guys' continuing commitment to working jazz roots into their freely expressive music – a path that's taken them through a run of music from Ornette Coleman to trad jazz, before landing them here at Miles Davis! Peter Evans handles trumpet – quite a heady role, but done well – and Jon Irabagon blows both the alto and tenor sax parts, alongside Ron Stabinsky on piano, Moppa Elliott on bass, and Kevin Shea on drums. Titles include – of course – "So What", "Freddie Freeloader", "All Blues", "Blue In Green", and "Flamenco Sketches". CD

We love these guys to death – even if we always get out of breath saying their name in a hurry – and they really shine strongly here, on a long live album that perfectly captures their non-stop sense of imagination and restless creativity! Unlike some of their other recent projects, which were thematic in nature, this concert performance has the group moving through so many different modes at once – often in the short space of a longer song – with that strong sense of jazz history that's always made them so unique – especially in the way that they find to set a whole new fire to sounds we thought we already knew so well! Moppa Elliott drives the group on some beautiful bass – and the rest of the lineup includes Peter Evans on trumpet and piccolo trumpet, Jon Irabagon on tenor and sopranino sax, and Kevin Shea on drums and electronic – on titles tha tinclude "Pen Argyl/Ulysses At Troy/Andover/Blue Ball/Effort Patience Dilligence", "My Delightful Muse/Hideaway/A Night In Tunisia", and "Is Granny Spry/Dunkelbergers/Baden/Little Hope". The group bring camp back firmly for the 70s – and are still one of the best-remembered mainstream disco acts of the time – thanks to catchy, poppy grooves that had most of the country humming their tunes, even if they didn't agree with their sexual politics. Grooves are by the hit team that made most of the VP albums strong – Horace Ott arranging, Gypsy Lane backing, and Jacques Morali at the glorious helm of the whole thing – and titles include "Macho Man", "I Am What I Am", "Key West", and "Sodom & Gomorrah". Excellent heavy funk from Stax! Black Nasty were one of the heaviest groups on the label – with a rock-solid guitar-based groove that went even farther than the Bar-Kays, who were no slouch in the guitar department themselves! The grooves are all slow to midtempo, with the band coming down hard on the downbeats, jamming away in a style that sounds more like heavy Detroit Westbound than sweetly soulful Memphis. Most all cuts have vocals – sung in a shouting style by the band that works well with the tripped-out hooks of the songs. This was the only album the band ever cut, but it's become a fast favorite among those who like their funk raw. Tracks include "We're Doin Our Thing", "Rushin Sea", "Booger The Hooker", "Black Nasty Boogie", "Nasty Soul", and "Getting Funky Round Here". LP, Vinyl record album

Seminal work from one of the 70s greatest groups! The band had always been great at love songs and uptempo numbers – but this record has them moving into more righteous area, picking up on some of the more socially conscious soul of their generation that had been working its way up the charts. The album features excellent production by Chi-Lite Eugene Record, who also wrote a lot of the material – plus arrangements by Tom Tom and Sonny Sanders. Great stuff all around, with the righteous social tunes "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to The People", "Trouble's A Comin", and "We Are Neighbors" – plus classic love songs "Have You Seen Her" and "Love Uprising", which are still kind of the band's strongest point. Colemine, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 21.98
A killer debut from soul singer Kelly Finnigan – an artist who's got years of experience under his belt, working on other folks' projects – finally out in the spotlight on his own! Kelly's a blue-eyed singer, but has a voice that crackles with a classic soul rasp – set up here in the kind of deep soul, funk-based backings you'd expect from the record's placement on the Colemine label! Drums are heavy, arrangements are full, horns are tight, and there's some great organ lines that burn alongside Kelly's vocals – to really give the whole thing a deeply-rooted southern soul quality. Finnigan produced the whole thing himself – and titles include "I Called You Back Baby", "Freedom", "Can't Let Him Down", "I Don't Wanna Wait", "I'll Never Love Again", "Smoking & Drinking", "Every Time It Rains", and "Since I Don't Have You Anymore". Stan Getz & Kenny BarronPeople Time ... CD
Verve, 1991. Used 2 CDs ... $3.99
Stan Getz and Kenny Barron – a perfect pairing on the famous People Time record! The album was recorded quite late in Stan's career, but it also represented a new flowering too – a wonderfully mature approach to tenor sax that mixed up all the dark corners and warm moments of previous years, given beautifully subtle accompaniment in the piano of Barron. Kenny's got a way of doing a lot with a little – just like Stan – and their pairing here quickly became the stuff of legend, once the album was released. There's no other players – no bass or drums – but Kenny puts the groove together perfectly for Stan, whose blowing only seems to get more and more sublime in the space of the set. CD

Sharon Jones & The Dap KingsGive The People What They Want ... LP
Daptone, 2014. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Tremendous work from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings – a set that took a bit longer to hit the racks than expected, but which really shows a richness that more than makes up for the delay! Sharon's a singer who's always been great – but she steps out strongly here with a sense of maturity that seems to take her vocals even farther than before – and The Dap Kings are more than ready to match her energy with some funky work of their own! Jones has gone through a lot in recent years – both with the band and in her own personal life – and the record's a proud summation of life's challenges and triumphs, served up in the instant-classic style that has made Sharon one of the greatest living soul singers of the past few decades. Bosco Mann knocked things out of the park with his raw production – and also wrote a good number of tracks on the set too – and titles include "Making Up & Breaking Up", "Long Time Wrong Time", "People Don't Get What They Deserve", "Retreat", "Stranger To My Happiness", and "Now I See". Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
Anthony Joseph takes a trip back to his roots – recording this album in his home turf of Trinidad, for a set that may well be his best record to date! The music sparkles with all the sunny touches you might guess from the title – but also has all those deeper, righteous currents that Joseph has brought to recent records – a very hard-to-define blend of jazz, funk, Caribbean roots, and other global elements – served up here with plenty of guest help from Meena Joseph, 3 Canal, John John Francis, Ella Andall, and Brother Resistance. The sound is great – with a powerful vibe that's gotten Anthony huge acclaim overseas, even if he's yet to take hold on this side of the Atlantic. Titles include "Sufferings", "Sans Souci", "Bandit School", "Dealings", "Dig Out Your Eye", "He Was Trying", "People Of The Sun", "On The Move", and Jungle". LP, Vinyl record album

The early 70s last hurrah for the Mamas & The Papas – rich harmonies and a surprisingly creative breadth of styles on this long-delayed final album! The Cali rock scene, and the world at large, where quite a different in 1971 than they were in the late 60s – and to the Mamas & The Papas credit, they're really not out to replicate past glories. The vocals are still sweet and soaring, and there's an upbeat vibe, but it's more laidback one. It's got a bit of an early 70s soft rock vibe, which we love! A fantastic collection of underground club – all hand-picked by South African DJ Esa, who also performs one of the numbers on the set! The music here all represents the huge evolution on that scene from the 90s onward – the change from thinner, tinnier synth pop into modes that are wonderfully rich and full – and which represent a huge global connection through the networks of house and club around the world! Many of these tunes have a relatively contemporary vibe – only a few show any trace of older South African styles – and Esa has also picked a few numbers from other global spots, too – but with a flow that makes for a very unified set overall. This set brings together loads of important tracks from that moment – music that begins in early 80s club, and moves through towards that time when a lot more American house was influencing the groove, and when producers had more than enough new technology on their hands to really open up a tune! The Soul Searchers (along with Chuck Brown) later became known for their heavy-hitting Go Go work at the end of the decade – but here, they're a really free-thinking outfit with a lot of jazz in their funk – and a willingness to change up the beats and timings in ways that push the record miles ahead from an average funk outing. Tracks swirl around with an amazing intensity – supported by guitar work from Brown, organ from Hilton Felton, and some really great horns from Don Tillery and Lloyd Pinchback. ✨✧ Archie SheppThings Have Got To Change/Cry Of My People ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 1971/1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of Impulse Records classics from Archie Shepp! Things Have Got To Change is wonderful post-Paris work from Archie Shepp – a record that has him bringing more focus back into his work after sessions overseas – and also making some great use of the legendary Joe Lee Wilson on vocals! There's a feeling here that's a real change for Shepp, but a great one too – a sound that's trying to reach new levels of expression in jazz – with a bit less of the sharp edges of the 60s, and more of the warmer, more righteous modes of the post-Coltrane generation. Wilson's vocals really help Shepp achieve those aims – by adding a lyrical balance to the tunes, and imbuing them with additional messages beyond the instrumentation – especially on the extended suite "Money Blues", which takes up all of side one. Also important is Cal Massey, who composed two of the tracks on the set, and also plays electric piano alongside Shepp in a spare duet on the beautiful "Dr King The Peaceful Warrior". Other players include Grachan Moncur and Charles Greenlee on trombones, Billy Butler on guitar, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Ted Daniels on trumpet – and Romulus Franceschini adds some electronic music on "Things Have Got To Change". Cry Of My People is one of the most righteous albums ever from Archie Shepp – a beautiful late Impulse set of grooves, and a record that matches the genius of Attica Blues! Shepp's working with a losse collective of players that includes Charles Greenlee, Harold Mabern, and Beaver Harris – plus vocalists like Joe Lee Wilson and Peggie Blue – all to craft a set of tunes that are as righteous and political as they are spiritual and soulful! The great Cal Massey handled arrangements on a number of the tracks on the set – bringing together the players with a wonderfully unified feel, pushing away the easy spirituality of earlier records to forge a massively powerful sound – and Shepp matches his great efforts by blowing some of his most soulful lines on record! Titles include the wonderful "African Drum Suite (parts 1 & 2)", plus "A Prayer", "Cry Of My People", "The Lady", "All God's Children Got A Home In The Universe", and "Rest Enough". CD

"Chains" is fantastic – a slow-burning, nicely righteous track with plenty of soul – and "A Toast To The People" has this loping groove with a slight current of funk, and a blue mood that feels lifted from Gil's first few records! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Ajay Heble & Rob WallacePeople Get Ready – The Future Of Jazz Is Now ... Book
Duke, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The future of jazz is now, even if it's in the past – as the editors here bring together a selection of essays that document the forward-thinking movements in jazz from the mid 60s onwards – some of which are only getting full appreciation all these many years later! There's a nice variety of subjects from an equally nice variety of writers – and essays include "Jeanne Lee's Voice" by Eric Porter, "Days Of Bread & Roses" by Mark Ribot, "Experimental Music In The Academy In New York City" by Tamar Barzel, "The Antiquity Of The Avant Garde" by John Szwed, "Black Jazz In The Digital Age" by Greg Tate, and "Ancient To The Future" by members of the AACM, including Nicole Mitchell, Matana Roberts, Don Moye, Wadada Leo Smith, and Roscoe Mitchell. There's also a section on the "Jazz Photography Of Thomas King" – and the whole thing is 312 pages, softcover, with some black and white photographs. Book

Trojan (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 10 x 7 inch set ... Out Of Stock
A cool little package – one that brings together some of the best early singles from Lee Scratch Perry – including his own work with The Upsetters, and other key collaborations too! The format is great – as each side of the single replicates the artwork of the original – and most material is from those key late 60s years when rocksteady was rumbling, and reggae was just coming into its own. Titles include "Uncle Charlie" and "What A Botheration" by The Mellotones, "Honey Love" and "Evol Yenoh" by Burt Walters, "Spanish Harlem" by Val Bennett & The Upset All Stars, "Tighten Up" by The Inspirations, "Sentence" by Danny & Lee, "You Crummy" by Lee Perry, "A Place In The Sun" by David Isaacs, "Handy Cap" by The Upsetters, "Stand By Me" by The Inspirations, "People Funny Boy" by Lee Perry, "Blowin In The Wind" by Burt Walters, "Uncle Desmond" by The Mellotones, "Bronco" by Sir Lord Comic & The Upsetters, "What A Botheration" by Lee Perry, "Baby Baby" and "Popeye On The Shore" by Val Bennett, and "Non Such" by The Mellotones. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Tony Wilson24 Hour Party People ... Book
Channel 4 (UK), 2001. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
If the cover image here looks familiar, it once graced an early 7" single on Factory Records – the legendary label started by the book's author, Tony Wilson! Wilson was not only a musical genius, he was sharper than most – and although his star had fallen a bit by the time of the book, it rose tremendously through the pages within – as Tony recounts both his own story and the wonderful generation of music that Factory helped facilitate – all as a "bizarre and not entirely fabricated story", according to the notes! The book slightly follows the screenplay of the film of the same name – but has a lot more details, especially for music fanatics, and maybe a lot more wit as well. 256 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. ✨✧ DarondoLet My People Go ... CD
Luv N' Haight, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mad homegrown soul from the enigmatic Darondo – a brief Bay Area star back in the 70s, and also host of TV comedy and children's shows! Darondo only ever saw release of 3 singles, but they're all pretty darn great – a weird mix of funk, soul, and sly slinky grooves – very unique in conception, and with a heady, tripped-out vision that makes us wish he'd recorded more. Luv N Haight have really done Darondo justice with this set – bringing together all 6 tracks from the singles, plus 3 more previously unissued numbers – all in a great package that features words from the man himself, plus some great images from his older TV shows. A near-lost soul figure, but one with enough charisma to fill the careers of other more famous acts! Titles include "How I Got Over", "Let My People Go", "Legs (part 1)", "True", "Didn't I", "I Want Your Love So Bad", "My Momma & My Poppa", "Sure Know How To Love Me", and "Listen To My Song". CD

✨✧ Lee DorseyNight People – The Best Of Lee Dorsey (3CD set) ... CD
Sunset Blvd, 1960s/1970s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
The biggest collection of work we've ever seen from Lee Dorsey – a set that starts with his early Fire/Fury singles at the start of the 60s, then moves through his big recordings for Sansu and other labels that helped establish the New Orleans soul style of the late 60s – then even includes great later work for Polydor, Spring, and ABC – plus some unreleased tracks too! Lee Dorsey is one of the key figures who put the funk in New Orleans Funk – and most of the music here features the production talents of Allen Toussaint and Marshall Seehorn – two Crescent City talents who could always come up with the funk, but who really found their muse in Dorsey's vocals! The 3CD package features 66 tracks in all – and titles include "A Place Where We Can Be Free", "Yes We Can Can", "Freedom For The Stallion", "Sneakin Sally Through The Alley", "Night People", "Soul Mine", "Thank You", "Babe", "Draining", "Lonelyology", "I Gotta Find A New Love", "Ride Your Pony (live)", "Chin Chin", "Behind The 8 Ball", "Ya Ya", "You're Breaking Me Up", "Mess Around", "People Sure Act Funny", "O Me O My O", "Riverboat", "My Old Car Commercial", "What Am I Loving For", "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further", "As Quiet As It's Kept", "Hoodlum Joe", "When I Met My Baby", and "Ixie Dixie Pixie Pie". ✨✧ Sharon Jones & The Dap KingsGive The People What They Want (limited edition mono version with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Anthony JosephPeople Of The Sun ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
CD

Sunnyside, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tenorist Tobias Meinhart is the leader of the group, but about half the record also features some great guitar from Kurt Rosenwinkel – whose colorful, raspy tones really illuminate the sound! Meinhart has a strong, rich tone when he's moving straight ahead – and on the tunes with guitar, he and Kurt often dance together in the lead – before spinning out into strong solos of their own – in a combo that also features Ludwig Hornung on piano, Tom Berkmann on bass, and Mathias Rupping on drums. Most tunes are originals by Meinhart – songs that explode slowly with a nice sense of color – and titles include "Mount Meru", "It's Not So Easy", "Berlin People", "Alfred", "Serenity", and "Childhood". ✨✧ Mother EarthPeople Tree (expanded edition) ... CD
Acid Jazz/BGP (UK), 1994. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A hugely expanded version of this stone London classic from Mother Earth – presented as a 2CD set with a huge amount of extra material! The core album is the kind of record that should have crossed over big at a global level, had more folks been paying attention to the Brit funk scene at the time! The set's a bit more focused and song based than the group's debut – somewhat less cosmic, but no less righteous – with a sound that's steeped in 70s soul, funk, and underground rock – served up with feel that's almost a blue-eyed take on the Curtom groove, carried off with lots of rumbling bass and wah wah guitar! The vocals sound great – somewhere in a space between Jamiroquai and Paul Weller, but always a fair bit funkier – and the production is lean and clean, but never too rootsy to fall into crossover cliches of a few decades before. A really great step forward for the scene at the time – and a record that's been sadly lost between the genres for years. Titles include "Apple Green", "Time Of The Future", "Saturation 70", "Trip Down Brian Lane", "Jesse", and "Stardust Bubblegum". CD features 15 bonus tracks that include "Slide Sweet Baby", "Soul Sacrifice", "Find It", "Almost Grown", "Roadster", "Help Me Up", "Headf*ck", and "Warlocks Of Bakersfield CA" – plus some alternate takes of album tracks! Numero, Mid 80s. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Sweet electro soul from a Bay Area group who deliver way more than most of their contemporaries – music that's deep enough to maybe win the "intellectual" tag in the title! That cut leads off the EP – and is this laidback dreamy instrumental that runs for almost 9 minutes in length – with slow beats and a great piano part to offset the other electro elements! "Across The Water" has a bit of vocals – but really lets you get into the midtempo funky groove before any words come into place – and even then, they step aside when a voice shouts out "turn the bass up" – before a mighty nice solo! "Music For All People has a bright blend of beats and bass – with lots of jazzy elements on the guitar line too! 12-inch, Vinyl record
