✨✧ Lothar & The Hand PeopleSpace Hymn ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good- ... $19.99
A great little group – with music as wonderful as their name! Lothar & The Hand People sprung out of the post-folk years of the mid 60s – bringing together styles that had an earthier touch, with others that shared more in the proto-psyche of the time, and which also had a bit of a cosmic influence. And while at their core, the group had a sound that was shared by a number of groups at the time – somewhere in between Byrds-esque down-homeyness and sunshine psyche – they also had a knack for pulling in unusual instrumentation, creating some great "curve ball" moments that really kept their albums interesting. People Under The Stairs12 Step Program ... CD
Piecelock 70, 2014. Used ... $8.99
The PUTS sound as fresh as ever on 12 Step Program – their 9th album, believe it or not – and it's among their best ever! People Under The Stairs hit the their creative stride in the 90s, relying on golden age styled rhymes and production, at a time when mainstream hip hop had gotten away from head nodding beatcraft, soulful samples, and dexterously rhymed wordplay. But the PUTS never felt retro, or "throwback", thanks to their contemporaneously relevant rhymes, off-kilter use of samples, and straight-up high quality work. 12 Step Program continues their long creative win streak to say the least. Like all of their best efforts, it's built to last, and we'll be listening to it for years to come. Includes "Roundabouts", "Ste. For Reefer", "Up Til Sun Up", "Cool Story Bro", "The Strand", "LA Nights", "Get Hip", "Pictures On My Wall", "Breakup Music", "Yes I Can", "Doctor Feelgood" and more. CD

People's ChoiceAny Way You Wanna – The People's Choice Anthology 1971 to 1981 ... CD
Big Break (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $9.99
Funky Philly soul at its finest! This is the first-ever People's Choice compilation we've seen – all the more impressive for pulling together essential recordings made for the Philadelphia International, Casablanca, TSOP, West End and Phil-LA Of Soul labels – recordings that cover an incredible decade-long run! People's Choice burst out of the gate in the early 70s with a wave of funky, electric piano flavored singles – soon catching the attention of Gamble & Huff, which helped open doors both commercially and creatively in the years that followed. We'd be hard pressed to pick a finer batch of tracks from early 70s to early 80s than you'll find here – including standout early singles and album tracks, rarer B-sides and single mixes – when considered all together really showing the group in all its multi-faceted glory! 33 tracks on 2CDs: "Do It Anyway You Wanna", "I Likes To Do It", "Cold Blooded & Down-Right-Funky", "Nursery Rhymes", "My Feet Won't Move, But My Shoes Did The Boogie", "Turn Me Loose", "Grunt", "Love Shop", "Asking For Trouble", "Don't Send Me Away", "A Mellow Mood", "You Ought TO Be Dancing", "If You Gonna Do It (Put Your Mind To It)" (Parts 1 & 2), "Boogie Down USA", "Soft And Tender", "A Great Truth", Tom Moulton mixes of "Opus-De-Funk" & "Do It Any Way You Wanna" and "Jam Jam Jam (All Night Long)" and more! People's ChoiceBoogie Down USA ... LP
TSOP, 1975. Very Good ... $3.99
One of the most successful albums cut by People's Choice during the 70s – and a record that shows them making the same progression from funk to disco as other groups of the time, like BT Express. Yet despite the easily imagined disco that the title might indicate, the album's actually got some great soul tracks – filled with the heavy Philly soul of earlier days, stretched out a bit more professionally thanks to production help from Gamble & Huff. Frankie Brunson's great on vocals and keyboards, and the band grooves hard and tight on most of the album. Tracks include "Do It Any Way You Wanna", "Mickey D's", "Party Is A Groovy Thing", "Don't Send Me Away", and "I'm Leaving You". LP, Vinyl record album

People's ChoiceTurn Me Loose ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1978. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of the crowning achievements of People's Choice – a very hip group on the Philly scene, but one who spent most of their early years just releasing excellent (but under-circulated) 7" singles! By the time they arrived at the Philadelphia International label, the group was razor-sharp, and right at the top of their game – schooled in funk and soul, and almost more self-contained than some of the other artists who worked with Gamble & Huff! The set was recorded at Sigma Sound, but has a leaner sound than some of the disco productions of the time – more funky soul, turned towards a 70s club mode – with excellent vocals from Valerie Brown, who shares lead spotlight with longtime group member Frankie Brunson. Titles include the nice mellow stepper "Soft & Tender", plus "Rough Ride", "Stay With Me", "A Greater Truth", "Your Love Stays On My Mind", and "Turn Me Loose". LP, Vinyl record album

PRO (People Rock Outfit)Blacky Joe (180 gram pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
EMI/Soundway (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
The People Rock Outfit really knock it out of the park with this dark-edged classic from the 70s – one of the heaviest albums we've heard from the Nigerian scene at the time, and a record that's almost got more of a South African spirit overall! These guys effortlessly mix together funk and psych – the former in these stark, forward-moving rhythnm that are mighty nice – the latter in these long-spun guitar lines that have a nice fuzzy vibe, as the solos cascade effortlessly from the hands of the guitarist! Vocals are all in English – sometimes with a slow-stepping approach that's very moody, more often in a lively spirit to match the rhythms – and the record also features a bit of guest work on moog and Hammond, which really adds a lot to the sound. Titles include "Blacky Joe", "Mary Jane", "Faded Jeans", "Freedom", "Movement", "Tell Me", "Midnight Woman", and "Looking Round". LP, Vinyl record album

Reel PeopleRetroflection Remixed ... CD
Reel People (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Excellent remix version of Reel People's fantastic Retroflection – one that you can almost look to as an equally great alternative version of it – with remixes by Atjazz, John Morales, Terry Hunter, Tall Black Guy, DJ Spinna and others! The warmly collaborative spirit of the original album – with guest vocals by Angie Stone, Navasha Daya, Anthony David, Omar and others – makes this kind of a companion piece a natural fit. The remixers wisely hew to the gliding soul with jazzy touches that make Retroflection such a strong, standout work, while bringing in elements of club soul, jazzy samba, and timeless disco, depending on the producer/remixer. Titles include "Don't Stop The Music (Art Of Tones Modern Disco Mix)", "I Want To Thank You (Sebb Junior Remix)", "Thinking About Your Love (Da Brownie Remix)", "Keep It Up (DJ Spinna Galactic Funk Remix)", "I'm In Love (Buscrates Remix)", "Buttercup (Terry Hunter Main Club Mix", "Always There (Scott Diaz Funk Excursion)", and "Can We Pretend (Tall Black Guy Samba Remix)". An excellent double-length set from Horace Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra – an extremely righteous ensemble that was one of the hippest things going on the LA jazz scene of the 70s! The vibe is free and spiritual, but it also has a wonderful groove pulsating underneath many of the tracks – that heir to the Impulse Records style that Tapscott and other Nimbus Records artists carried on well into the early 80s. The group here features some of Tapscott's Nimbus labelmates – including Sabir Matteen and Billy Harris on tenor saxes, Linda Hill on piano, Adele Sebastian on flute, Roberto Miranda on bass, and Jesse Sharps on soprano sax – and in a way, the album's almost a live summation of all the mighty talents brewing on the Nimbus label at the time! Tracks are all quite long, and titles include a great version of Sebastian's "Desert Fairy Princess", plus "Macrame", "Future Sally's Time", "Noissessprahs", "Village Dance", "LTT", and "Lift Every Voice". Casablanca/Universal (Japan), 1978. Used ... $5.99
The macho aesthetic gets redefined for a whole new audience – as The Village People play with a pastiche of masculine images from daily life, all recast for the post-Stonewall generation! The group bring camp back firmly for the 70s – and are still one of the best-remembered mainstream disco acts of the time – thanks to catchy, poppy grooves that had most of the country humming their tunes, even if they didn't agree with their sexual politics. Grooves are by the hit team that made most of the VP albums strong – Horace Ott arranging, Gypsy Lane backing, and Jacques Morali at the glorious helm of the whole thing – and titles include "Macho Man", "I Am What I Am", "Key West", and "Sodom & Gomorrah". ✨✧ People's ChoiceI Likes To Do It – Funkadelphia Vol 1 ... CD
Jamie, Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky Philly! People's Choice were a group who later went onto smooth soul fame at Philly International – but during their early years, they were a great little funky group who recorded some tasty singles for the Phil-LA of Soul label. Their funky 45s are some of the most quickly sold from our bins – and they've never had a full LP of material from this period, which makes the CD even more valuable! The general groove is sort of a stop-start chugging funky one – with strong male vocals in the lead, and crashing bass, piano, and guitar riffs in the background. The CD takes 8 tracks from rare singles – including "I Likes To Do It", "Big Ladies Man", "Wootie-T-Woo", "Let Me Do My Thing", and "Oh How I Love It" – and adds in 6 tracks never issued before – including "Grunt", "When You're All Alone", "Nothing But Soul Food", "La Papala", and "Jo". ✨✧ People's WorkshopHouston Talent Expo 1982 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
BBE (UK), 1982. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The cover might look a bit understated, but the album's got plenty of depth and power – a rare set from the Texas underground of the early 80s – cut by a group who've clearly drunk deep from the same musical well that inspired Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers, and other cosmic soul talents of the 70s! As with Stevie and Roy, there's plenty of jazzy currents in the music of The People's Workshop – warm keyboards, sweet sax and flute, and waves of color that really come through the grooves and illuminate the deeper spirit of the vocals. There's a sense of collaboration here that's really special – almost a James Mason vibe at times – all with a sense of sophistication that's quite different than the rootsier sounds you might normally expect from Texas soul groups. Titles include "Save Your Money", "A Song For The Children", "Love Love", "Let's Get High", "Chocolate Coated People Song", and "This Song". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the best psyche albums we've ever heard on Capitol from the 60s – an introspective session with lots of space, sounds, and plenty of dark corners! The album reminds us a lot of work by Gandalf, who also recorded for Capitol at the time – very laid back at times, with a gentle approach to the music that also lapsed into some jazzy phrasing at certain points. Quite nice overall, with a really great little sound – and titles that include "This Life She Is Mine", "Girl Said", "Land Of A Day", "Hudson Hill Feeling", "They Didn't Even Go To The Future", "Soon There'll Be Thunder", "Those Who Love", and "Why Must I Be". ✨✧ People's Pleasure with Alive & WellDo You Hear Me Talkin To You ... LP
Brownstone/Athens Of The North (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A very cool combo from the LA scene of the 70s – a tight funky group, topped with two female soul singers – all working together in a style that's got a wonderful mixture of warmer edges and grittier sounds at the core! The two female singers really give the set a unique vibe – as they help bring focus to the instrumentation of the group, with a lot more presence than the usual throw-in female vocals of the time – hardly the backing chorus mode of a disco record, and instead a great balance to the sharp guitar lines and keyboards from the musicians! We've not heard of any of the players in any other setting, but they're very good – clearly able to handle jazz if they want, but aimed here towards a sophisticated funk style that's equally great on the mellow steppers as it is on the more upbeat tracks. Titles include "Heavenly Feeling", "World Full Of People", "Do You Hear Me Talking To You", "Dreaming Our Lives Away", "A Thank You Song", "Fantasies & Dreams", and "I'd Like To Stay". ✨✧ Cannonball Adderley QuintetHappy People ... LP
Capitol, 1972. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A really unique little album from Cannonball's all-great late years at Capitol – a session that features some strong influences from Brazilian music – "The Happy People" – and production from the legendary David Axelrod! The mix makes for a really unique little record – a set that isn't really bossa, but isn't regular Cannonball funk either – kind of a special hybrid of the two! Airto plays on the set, and contributed the great groover "The Happy People" – a long bit of funky samba that features George Duke on electric piano, and percussion and vocals by Airto himself. The rest of the album's pretty darn great too – with some long tracks that have a more open-ended groove than the usual Cannon funk – featuring more piano by Duke, percussion by Airto and King Errison, cornet by Nat Adderley, and guitar by David T Walker. Other titles include "Ela", "Maria Tres Filhos", and "Savior" – and the album was recorded live, with a very lively feel! LP, Vinyl record album

Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Columbia, 1983. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Miles Davis in the early 80s – but still sounding pretty darn great, and somehow managing to take some of his best elements from the 70s and refine them into a slightly more focused groove! The tracks here are shorter than before – no side-long jams at all – but they definitely bristle with slight undercurrents of noise, and have some unbridled rhythms that make for a good sense of energy. Added to these are a few more (then) contemporary touches – a very slight update of Miles' older funk, but never in a slick or commercial way – and still cerebral enough to show the world that Davis wasn't selling out late in the day. Miles plays a bit of keyboards in addition to trumpet – and other players include Bill Evans on saxophones, John Scofield on guitar, Marcus Miller on bass, and Al Foster on drums. A killer debut from soul singer Kelly Finnigan – an artist who's got years of experience under his belt, working on other folks' projects – finally out in the spotlight on his own! Kelly's a blue-eyed singer, but has a voice that crackles with a classic soul rasp – set up here in the kind of deep soul, funk-based backings you'd expect from the record's placement on the Colemine label! Drums are heavy, arrangements are full, horns are tight, and there's some great organ lines that burn alongside Kelly's vocals – to really give the whole thing a deeply-rooted southern soul quality. Finnigan produced the whole thing himself – and titles include "I Called You Back Baby", "Freedom", "Can't Let Him Down", "I Don't Wanna Wait", "I'll Never Love Again", "Smoking & Drinking", "Every Time It Rains", and "Since I Don't Have You Anymore". Sunny wonderfulness from one of the grooviest vocal groups of all time! This is Free Design's legendary album for children – referred to in the title as "very important people" – and it's a strangely hip set of tracks designed to get the kids to open up in a groovy late 60s kind of way. Given that the Free Design always sounded like a bunch of hippy kids, the setting is perfect for them – and they dreamily make their way through a great set of nearly all original tracks that sparkle with an innocent charm that's slyly deeper than you'd guess from the kid-orientation of the set! Original titles include "Love You", "Kites Are Fun", "Daniel Dolphin", "Ronda 'Go Round", "Bubbles", "Little Cowboy", and "Scarlet Tree". CD features 2 bonus tracks – both outtakes from "For The Love Of Your Lips", a Chapstick commercial! CD

Lee HazlewoodNSVIPs – Not So Very Important People ... LP
Reprise, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A pivotal record in the career of the great Lee Hazlewood – one that presents his personal with all its wit and warmth, yet also lets Lee take on some more mature topics as well! Most of the tunes start in the same sort of storytelling style as the album Trouble Is A Lonesome Town – but Hazlewood's a lot more tongue-in-cheek with his presentation, and directs the lyrics towards much more biting commentary – not entirely politically progressive, but definitely a larger sense of society beyond the individual. The cast of characters spin out wonderfully – the NSVIPS promised in the title – but they also tie together to present this portrait of an America just waking up in the mid 60s – able to see itself more clearly, yet without any of the overpowering emotions in years to come. That balance is Hazlewood's really special contribution to music at this point – and is given great shape here with help in the studio from Reprise Records whiz kid Jimmy Bowen. Titles include "Have You Made Any New Bombs Today", "I Ain't Gonna Be", "I Might Break Even", "Go Die Big City", "I Had A Friend", and "Everybody Calls Me Something". LP, Vinyl record album

It's good, solid stuff – reinterpreting the material in a way that's very mindful of its influence on classic hip hop – with some tighter beats and other nods to classic 90s hip hop production – but it's done with an emphasis on live instrumentation that's pretty great! Medline plays most of the instruments himself, with lots of Afro percussion and jazzy flute – with guest vocals on a number of tunes by Roni Alkekengi. Includes "A New Day", "People Make The World Go Round", "Wind Parade","Expansion" and "Everybody Love The Sunshine" with Roni Alkekengi, "Eboness", "Red Clay" and more. CD

One thing we leave about this set of remixes is that it's respectful of the earth tones of the original tracks – remixed with the guests personal stamps, but reverent of the global funk, samba and more inherent to Nickodemus Sun People tunes. 12 tracks in all: "Sun People" (Earthrise Soundsystem rmx), "Just Move" feat Kwasi (Spy From Cairo rmx), "Didibina" feat Falu (J-Boogie rmx), "Love Feeling" (Christian Prommer rmx), "Sun Children" feat Real Live Show (Red Astaire rollerskate rmx), "Brookarest" (Pimps Of Joytime rmx) and much more. Archie SheppThings Have Got To Change/Cry Of My People ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 1971/1972. New Copy ... $9.99
A pair of Impulse Records classics from Archie Shepp! Things Have Got To Change is wonderful post-Paris work from Archie Shepp – a record that has him bringing more focus back into his work after sessions overseas – and also making some great use of the legendary Joe Lee Wilson on vocals! There's a feeling here that's a real change for Shepp, but a great one too – a sound that's trying to reach new levels of expression in jazz – with a bit less of the sharp edges of the 60s, and more of the warmer, more righteous modes of the post-Coltrane generation. Wilson's vocals really help Shepp achieve those aims – by adding a lyrical balance to the tunes, and imbuing them with additional messages beyond the instrumentation – especially on the extended suite "Money Blues", which takes up all of side one. Also important is Cal Massey, who composed two of the tracks on the set, and also plays electric piano alongside Shepp in a spare duet on the beautiful "Dr King The Peaceful Warrior". Other players include Grachan Moncur and Charles Greenlee on trombones, Billy Butler on guitar, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Ted Daniels on trumpet – and Romulus Franceschini adds some electronic music on "Things Have Got To Change". Cry Of My People is one of the most righteous albums ever from Archie Shepp – a beautiful late Impulse set of grooves, and a record that matches the genius of Attica Blues! Shepp's working with a losse collective of players that includes Charles Greenlee, Harold Mabern, and Beaver Harris – plus vocalists like Joe Lee Wilson and Peggie Blue – all to craft a set of tunes that are as righteous and political as they are spiritual and soulful! The great Cal Massey handled arrangements on a number of the tracks on the set – bringing together the players with a wonderfully unified feel, pushing away the easy spirituality of earlier records to forge a massively powerful sound – and Shepp matches his great efforts by blowing some of his most soulful lines on record! Titles include the wonderful "African Drum Suite (parts 1 & 2)", plus "A Prayer", "Cry Of My People", "The Lady", "All God's Children Got A Home In The Universe", and "Rest Enough". CD

The album's got a few really messed up numbers – ones that have Charles ranting and grooving with incredible energy, especially on the cuts "90 Day Cycle People" and "Gimme that Sammich"! One the all time great funky albums of the 70s – a mad little record with a sense of rhythm and timing that was years ahead of its time! The Soul Searchers (along with Chuck Brown) later became known for their heavy-hitting Go Go work at the end of the decade – but here, they're a really free-thinking outfit with a lot of jazz in their funk – and a willingness to change up the beats and timings in ways that push the record miles ahead from an average funk outing. Tracks swirl around with an amazing intensity – supported by guitar work from Brown, organ from Hilton Felton, and some really great horns from Don Tillery and Lloyd Pinchback. The album features a wonderful remake of "Think" – plus the great originals "1993", "Soul To The People", "Blowout", and "We The People". LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent heavy funk from Stax! Black Nasty were one of the heaviest groups on the label – with a rock-solid guitar-based groove that went even farther than the Bar-Kays, who were no slouch in the guitar department themselves! The grooves are all slow to midtempo, with the band coming down hard on the downbeats, jamming away in a style that sounds more like heavy Detroit Westbound than sweetly soulful Memphis. Most all cuts have vocals – sung in a shouting style by the band that works well with the tripped-out hooks of the songs. This was the only album the band ever cut, but it's become a fast favorite among those who like their funk raw. Nickodemus logically follows up his warm and breezy Sun People album with the more cosmically-lit follow up Moon People – once again bringing a wealth of global influences and instrumentation to his unique style of spacey dancefloor soul! He's joined by the legendary Afrika Bambaata and other great vocal guests – including Sammy Ayala, Kissey Asplund and Kathrin DeBoer of Belleruche – which elevates the creative mix of beats and eclectic instrumentation quite nicely! That said, the instrumental backdrops are quite hypnotic on their own – cosmic soul beats and atmosherics flavored by flutes, Eastern string accents, horns, steel drums and much more – depending on the needs of the particular track. Includes "Under The Volcano" with Navegante, "Moon People" feat The Real Live Show, "Nights Of Balaur", "Alkebulan" feat Afrika Bambaata, "Peaceful Island Earth" feat Kathrin DeBoer, "The Nuyorican Express" feat Candela Allstars, "Mirage" with Kissey Asplund, "Conmigo (Hallex Remix)" feat Sammy Ayala, "Vino People" and more. An excellent hard-to-find track by Lyn Collins! "Me & My Baby" has a wonderful gospelly intro, similar to "Message to the Soul Sisters", which then leaps into a great groove with a nice hard soul hook! People/Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Here's a rare one! Arranger/producer Dave Matthews was to James Brown what David Axelrod was to Cannonball Adderley – a key funky assistant who came along at just the right moment to help James open up his sound in an even newer direction! Matthews brought up the guitar a bit more in James' music – and also helped add in some slightly fuzzy elements to the funk – and their pairing, although a bit under-acknowledged at the time, has gone on to become the stuff of legend. Dave's also gone on to become a straighter jazz musician – but here, he steps out on a wild funk project with his own group – recorded for Brown's own People records label. There's a bit of vocals on the record, but there's also plenty of instrumental moments too – and the whole thing has lots of heavy drums and fuzzy guitar – a fair bit like the sound of James' Sho Is Funky Down Here record. Heavy cuts include "Put Your Thing On Me", "Inside Or Outside", and "Evidence For The Existence of The Unconscious". An intriguing (and rare) chapter of the James Brown story! CD

Jazz & People (France), 2018. New Copy ... $5.99
Thiefs are a jazz combo at the core – outfitted with saxes, acoustic bass, and drums – but all three members also use a fair bit of electronics, and do so in a way that opens the door to a range of different voices that help shape the sound of the record! The mode is a bit like some of the more creative jazz-inspired projects coming from the LA scene of late – such as work on the Ropeadope label – and there's definitely some righteous power to the vocals on the set, thanks to contributions from Mike Ladd, Gael Faye, and Guillermo E Brown. Aaron Parks plays piano and keyboard on most of the set – and there's a vibe here that's a bit like his own work too – on titles that include "I Live In Fear", "Anthro", "Pas D'Ici", "Iwbah", "Beat One", and "Anthro". People, 1972. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The funkiest album ever recorded by Lyn Collins – a stone solid set that really lives up to the legacy of her funky 45s! Like those gems, this one has Collins working with James Brown on production and the JBs in the background – creating a razor-sharp groove that's probably the closest any female singer ever came in the 70s to matching The Godfather's groove! The album's got Lyn shifting between heavy funk numbers and mellower soul cuts – really pushing things to the max with an incredibly deep take on a few older favorites, plus some killer new numbers – all produced to funky perfection, with just the right sort of balance between the rough and the tight. Titles include her great version of "Think", a funky sample cut that never gets old – plus the cuts "Things Got To Get Better", "Women's Lib", "Never Gonna Give You Up", "Just Won't Do Right", "Wheels Of Life", and the funkiest version ever of "Fly Me To The Moon". People/Get On Down, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An oft-overlooked gem from the JBs – their last album for People Records, and a stone funk classic that's every bit as essential as the others! The band is still in fine fine form – with none of the fast-funk or proto-disco of some later recordings – and they're working here in some really tight song formats that almost go back to the early days of the group's first few singles. The album's filled with great playing, wonderful grooves, and Fred Wesley's keen sense of humor – which sparks the whole set with a sense of warmth and creative play that show why the JBs are still the greatest funk band ever. Includes the excellent "Little Boy Black", which begins with some tasty James Brown vocals; the oft-sampled "Rockin' Funky Watergate"; plus "Step Child", "Makin Love", and "Rice & Ribs". Not as drawn out as Doing It To Death, but more complicated than Food For Thought, and still a totally essential bit of funk! LP, Vinyl record album

People/Get On Down, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most fantastic albums by the JBs – a masterpiece of funky jamming, tight instrumentation, and that free yet tight style of the James Brown 70s years! The tracks are longer than on some of the earlier singles – especially the 8 minute jammer "(It's Not The Express) It's the JBs Monourail", an answer to BT Express' theme song, and a fantastic cut that's held up through so many years and so many scenes! Another great jammer is the group's version of "Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself", which runs for nearly 10 minutes – plus spacey funk tracks "Transmogrification" and "Taurus, Aires, & Leo", and the tighter jammer "Soul Funky Train", which returns to the group's funky 45 mode. Fantastic all around – and the kind of record you'll be playing for your grand kids! LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1971/1973. Near Mint- ... $43.99
One of the headiest albums ever recorded by the Art Ensemble of Chicago – a brilliant mix of noise and silence that rivals some of the greatest genius of the 20th century avant composition! The album's lead track "Ohnedaruth" builds slowly with a variety of percussion – traveling in People In Sorrow territory that shows a remarkable sense of sound and space. All members of the group pick up some percussion to build the track as it goes along – then follow suit with a more reed-based approach on the other extended tune on the album, "Lebert Aaly" – the group's brilliant tribute to the late Albert Ayler! The sound is incredibly deep and textured – and draws a clear line between creative improvisation and technical composition that puts the group alongside Cage and Hindemuth! LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic material from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – tracks recorded during their same crucial Paris trip of 1969 that also gave the world the better-known BYG/Actual albums – but delivered in a style that's slightly different overall! There's maybe more of the cerebral side of the group at play here – that great love of small shifts, textures, and instrumental interplay – similar, maybe, to their People Of Sorrow album at times – but with a lot more force, especially in the freer moments. In addition to bass, Malachi Favors plays electric bass, sitar, and banjo – all worth the price of admission alone – and Lester Bowie plays trumpet, flugelhorn, and other instruments, while Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman handle a variety of reeds and percussion. David Axelrod takes on Handel's Messiah – and the result is an amazingly complex set of music – very similar to his earlier albums on Capitol Records, and his Warner work with the Electric Prunes! If you love the Axe, you'll find plenty to love here – spare, dark orchestrations, often with a subtle hint of funk in the rhythms, some jazzy flourishes, and this bold sense of studio majesty that marks Axelrod as one of the most inventive producers of his time! The sound's one that gave birth to a whole generation of hip hoppers and beatheads – and the proceedings are conducted by Cannonball Adderley, with a feel that's similar to other Adderley/Axelrod high-concept sets – like Soul Of The Bible or Soul Zodiac. Titles include "Overture", "Worthy Is the Lamb", "Behold Recitative", "Comfort Ye My People", and "And The Angel Said Unto Them". LP, Vinyl record album

Motown/Real Gone, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 2CD ... $24.99
A fantastic collection of work from Sondra "Blinky" Williams – a hell of a soul singer who recorded a fair bit for Motown Records at the end of the 60s and start of the 70s – but an artist whose music ended up mostly spending the next few decades in the label's vaults! Yet Blinky never let the lack of success stop her from giving her best – as she's a fantastic vocalist, and one with an expressive range that easily matches some of the Motown greats of her generation – a list that would include Martha Reeves or Gladys Knight – but who also has these deeper, more righteous currents that make her a perfect singer for a Motown move into the 70s! Blinky only saw one full album issued at the time – a duo with Edwin Starr titled Just The Two Of Us – but this package features a fully conceived, yet never-released album – plus other singles, unissued tracks, live material, and lots more – a wealth of fully-cooked, powerfully-produced singles that finally give the singer her due. Booker T's definitely into a great new groove here – one that really extrapolates his Memphis roots through the haze of early 70s California – coming up with some wonderful sounds along the way! There's a definite A&M vibe to the record – that mix of rootsy modes and hipster polish that A&M was really pioneering alongside the Warner camp – and most of the instrumentation here is pretty stripped-down and laid back – sometimes played all by Booker in overdubs, sometimes with added studio help. Organ lines figure strongly, but not always – and vocals are mostly duets between Booker and Priscilla – on titles that include "Rings Around The World", "When Two People Are In Love", "The Crippled Crow", "Time", "Wild Fox", "Fly", and "Mendocino". Box TopsLetter/Cry Like A Baby/Non Stop/Dimensions (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Bell/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
Four full albums from the Box Tops, plus bonus tracks too! First up is The Letter/Neon Rainbow – a powerhouse set from The Box Tops – a 60s group who showed the world that the Memphis scene had as much to offer the world of rock as it did the worlds of blues and soul – thanks to the all-great pedigree of this album! Not only does the group feature a very young Alex Chilton on lead vocals, the set was also recorded at the new American Recording Studios headed up by Chips Moman – with tracks on the record from the classic soul songwriting team of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, not to mention a few by the young Bobby Womack too! The bit hit "The Letter" leads off the set, but the album's way more than just that it – filled with great tunes that include "I Pray For Rain", "I'm Your Puppet", "Happy Times", "Neon Rainbow", "Break My Mind", "She Knows How", and "Everything I Am". Cry Like A Baby is a fantastic album from The Box Tops – the kind of all-great, no-filler record that really set them apart from some of their 60s contemporaries! At this point, Alex Chilton's still not a songwriter, but he sounds tremendous in the lead on vocals – working with superb Memphis production, amidst a host of great tunes from the team of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, plus a few other key songwriters too! Penn produced the record, and really gives it a fantastic sound – the kind of special touches and genre-bending elements of his own later records – on titles that include "Deep In Kentucky", "Cry Like A Baby", "Trouble With Sam", "The Door You Closed To Me", "Lost", "Fields Of Clover", and "Every Time". Non Stop is beautiful work from The Box Tops – a set that has the group moving way past their early hits, and finding this really sort of special place in the world of up-and-coming artists in the 60s! The Box Tops were maybe one of the first Memphis rock groups to really put together all the great elements that were bubbling in that city's scene during the 60s – the unique hybrid of soul, country, R&B, and other influences that were filtering into groups via the cross-cultural vibe of the city. That quality really comes through here – partly in the group's performance and the lead vocals of Alex Chilton, partly in the great production by Dann Penn, who also wrote a number of tracks with Spooner Oldham, and partly in the way that fuller arrangements are used to underscore some more soulful touches in the music. Titles include "Sandman", "Choo Choo Train", "I'm Movin On", "People Gonna Talk", "She Shot A Hole In My Soul", "I Met Her In Church", "I Can Dig It", and "If I Had Let You In". Dimensions is maybe one of the most soulful albums by The Box Tops – and that's saying a heck of a lot, as there's plenty of other soul elements moving through the other records! Alex Chilton's really finding his own here, and contributes a number of his own songs to the record, as a harbinger of his great legacy to come – and the production is slightly shifted, with Tommy Cogbill and Chips Moman taking over from Dan Penn, and maybe bringing in even more elements from the wide crossover between rock and soul on the Memphis scene. Titles include "I See Only Sunshine", "Together", "The Happy Song", "Rock Me Baby", "Sweet Cream Ladies", "I Must Be The Devil", "Midnight Angel", and "Soul Deep". Bonus cuts include "Since I Been Gone", "Lay Your Smile On Me", "King's Highway", "Take Me To Your Heart", "Georgia Farm Boy", "Come On Honey", and "You Keep Tightening Up On Me". CD

One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time – and one of the first true moments of genius from a young Dee Dee Bridgewater! The album's a Japanese only release (proof that they're always hipper to our jazz artists than we are!) – and it features Dee Dee singing material that's quite different than her later R&B-inflected sides from the late 70s – very soaring and spiritual work, delivered in a way that set a whole new standard for jazz at the time! Backing is by a small combo with brothers Ron and Cecil Bridgewater, plus Roland Hanna on acoustic and electric piano, George Mraz on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums and percussion – but the star of the set is always Dee Dee, who sparkles beautifully on the album's classic versions of "Afro Blue" and "Little B's Poem" – both of which have been redone by many other singers over the years. Other great cuts include "People Make The World Go Round", "Love From The Sun", and "Love Vibrations". CD
