Johnny Griffin & Eddie Lockjaw DavisOw – Live At The Penthouse (180 gram vinyl) (2019 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Reel To Real, 1962. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $38.99 49.99
A never-issued live date by two incredible tenor giants – the legendary team of Johnny Griffin and Eddie Lockjaw Davis, working here with the same intensity as their famous albums of the early 60s! As with those dates, the duo really take off when recorded in a spontaneous performance setting – which is the case here, on two shows captured at Seattle's Penthouse night club, but with a vibe that's very much like the fire that the pair would set on their famous shows back in New York! The rhythm trio is rock-solid too – Horace Parlan on piano, Buddy Catlett on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – players who are both able to move with strong boppish energy, but also hit all the right modern moments that both musicians invoke – as Griff and Lockjaw match tenor solos with brilliant energy, on titles that include "How Am I To Know", "Second Balcony Jump", "Bahia", "Blue Lou", "Ow", "Blues Up & Down", and "Tickle Toe". Ahmad JamalJamal At The Penthouse ... LP
Argo, 1959. Very Good ... $9.99
A compelling title – as the record was recorded at Nola Penthouse Studios in New York, one of the hippest places to lay down tracks at the time – but the cover shows an image of the Playboy building in Chicago, famous from the TV show Playboy's Penthouse, Hugh Hefner's first foray into television! The actual music is equally compelling too – as the record is one of Ahmad's first non-trio sessions, and features some great larger arrangements from Joe Kennedy – backing the trio of Jamal, Vernel Fournier, and Israel Crosby with some light strings that create a wonderfully dreamy feel! Ahmad's piano glides along wonderfully in such a setting – set free a bit more than usual, and really sounding great on tracks that include "Ivy", "Comme Ci, Comme Ca", "Tangerine", "Never Never Land", "Ahmad's Blues", and "Seleritus". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and some aging.)

✨✧ Jack Wilson Quartet with Roy AyersCall Me – Jazz From The Penthouse (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Century 67, 1966. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from one of our favorite jazz duos of all time – pianist Jack Wilson and the young vibes genius Roy Ayers – working here back before his soul/funk fame of the 70s, in a completely different style! Ayers and Wilson only made a handful of records together back in the day – including important dates for Atlantic and Blue Note – and this set of unreleased live material from 1966 provides a much-needed addition to their short catalog of sides together – sublime modal jazz that we'd put right up there with anything else they ever did! Wilson is already a hell of a pianist on his own – one of the unsung greats of his generation, with a fantastic sense of flow and this mixture of lyricism and soulfulness that leads to all these very vivid moments and tonal explosions. Add Ayers to the mix, and you've really got something special – a vibes/piano pairing that sounds like nobody else – and which shows that even back before he worked with Herbie Mann, Roy was a tremendously unique player, destined for greatness. The group has a rock-solid rhythm duo – Buddy Woodson on bass and Von Barlow on drums – and titles include "Serenata", "Harbor Freeway 5pm", "Here's That Rainy Day", "CFD", "Pensativa", "Stolen Moments", "Nirvana", and "Call Me". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ InternetEgo Death (with download) ... LP
Columbia, 2015. New Copy 2LP ... $23.99 24.98
Pure wonderfulness from Internet – a group who seem to bound forward strongly with each new release! These guys are easily one of the most compelling mainstream soul acts we can think of – still very lean, and working with an indie-level vibe – but also able to focus in on hooks and the sorts of catchy elements that are bound to make the group huge in coming years! There's a crispy, crackling sound in the rhythms all the way through – but never in a too-abstract level, as some more sci-fi oriented artists can hit – and although the record features guest work from Janelle Monae, Tyler The Creator, and a few other stars – we actually love the group's own core performances the best. Titles include "Get Away", "Under Control", "Gabby", "Go With It", "Girl", "Special Affair", "Something's Missing", "Partners In Crime (part 3)", and "Penthouse Cloud". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Anita O'DayMy Ship ... CD
Emily/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $13.99
Great small combo work from Anita O'Day – done at a time when the singer had maybe faded from the American limelight a bit, but continued to do some really exceptional work for a variety of smaller labels! In fact, we might even say that Anita during this stretch was even hipper than before – as even on some of her classic 50s albums, she maybe still had a bit of the hoke from the big band years – whereas the O'Day on this album is older, mature, and really wonderfully suited to bring the most out of the tunes – all familiar, but handled with spare backings that really let the lady remind us why jazz vocals, when done right, are such a wonderful art! Titles include "After You've Gone", "The Man I Love", "Penthouse Serenade", "My Ship", and "Mean To Me". CD

✨✧ JigmastasResurgence Resurgence (with instrumentals) ... CD
BBE (UK), 2016. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An appropriately-titled effort from DJ Spinna's & Kryminul's legendary duo Jigmastas – beloved by underground/indie hip hop fans for a small, but stellar run of recordings from the the mid 90s to early 00s – and criminally overlooked by the mainstream to this day! Spinna has always been a gifted hip hop producer with a diverse, though distinctive sound – infusing whatever he does with real sense of soul. The Jigmastas productions allow him to do that in the service of gritty straight-forward boombap, and it's as strong as ever here. Kryminul's rhymes are tough, on point and with a youthful hunger, even though these cats have been in the game for decades. Includes "Too Ill" with Shabaam Saadique, "Magnetize", "Breather", "Penthouse", "The Outfit", "Resurge" and more. Includes the instrumental versions, too – 18 tracks in all. CD

✨✧ Jimmy McGriffBlack & Blues ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An unusual double-length album for Jimmy McGriff – released during his funkier years at the Groove Merchant label, but with a gritty sort of sound that takes us back to his first few records on Sue in the 60s! The "blues" in the title is definitely well-chosen – as the tracks here are long, lean, and drawn out – blues-drenched soul jazz played by a small combo that includes Larry Frazier on guitar, Rudy Johnson on tenor, and Saint Jenkins on drums – plus Gerry Jemmott on electric bass, adding a bit more vamp to the background than usual. There's a very earthy feel to most numbers – almost improvised jams at times, at least on the tracks that are credited to McGriff as the writer. Titles include "Blue Groove (parts 1 & 2)", "Blues For A Broken Down Funky Old Bus", "Bahama", "Mack The Knife", "Harp-er", "Mocha", "Hey Mrs Jones", "Amen", and "Penthouse Serenade". CD
(Part of the Groove Merchant Mo' Groovy Collection!)
