Love, Peace, & HappinessHere 'Tis ... CD
RCA/P&C, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A tremendous little record from Love Peace & Happiness – a great vocal trio from the early 70s, and one who really shine with this overlooked gem for RCA! The trio were part of the New Birth/Nite Liters universe that producer Harvey Fuqua brought to the label at the time – and they've got a hip sound that's right up there with the other two groups – with whom they were very intimately involved – working here with arrangements from Fuqua that are almost his contribution to post-Motown sounds in the 70s, the way that Holland-Dozier-Holland were working at Invictus. Ann Bogan really soars with righteous leads in the group – and gets equal support from brothers Leslie and Melvin Wilson – who really help underscore some of the bolder elements of the music – especially on the funkier cuts. Titles include "I Don't Want To Do Wrong", "Lonesome Lonely & Alone", "Don't Knock My Love", "If I Owned The World", "You Can't Cheat the Cheater", "Stay", "Mind", and "You've Chosen Me". Great reissue – with excellent sound and very detailed notes! CD

PeaceBlack Power ... CD
Copperbelt/Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $8.99 17.98
A really raw set from 70s Africa – one that's more rock than Afro Funk, but which has a pretty hypnotic groove overall! The group's heavy on guitars, which are often played in a fuzzy, jamming sort of way – but with different tones and phrasing than American or Anglo psyche groups – even though they're clearly an inspiration to the sound! Most tunes are strongly rhythmic – guitars grooving away over muddy drums and a bit of rumbling bass – all produced in very basic, stripped-down ways – but that makes for a big part of the charm of the set. Vocals are mostly in English, and often more chanted than sung – and titles include "I Need Mercy", "I Don't Know", "Peaceful Man", "Get On The Way", "This Is The Time Now", and "Black Power". CD

Peace Flag EnsembleNoteland ... LP
We Are Busy Bodies (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $24.99 25.99
A jazz group, but one with a very different approach – as the core energy here comes from the piano improvisations of Jon Neher, which then draw all the other musicians together, as they find ways to slide their own contributions into the fold! There's a very cohesive sound to the music – this isn't some sort of long-distance phone-in project – and the organic quality of the music reminds us a bit of some Japanese minimal projects from the 80s, but also maybe with a bit of the better side of ECM too – although there's nicely not the same sort of darkness in the production, as the instruments come off with a nice sort of glow. Other players include Travis Packer on bass, Dalton Lam on trumpet, Paul Gutheil on saxes, and Michael Scott Dawson on guitar and electronics. Titles include "Your Father Is In The Yard Counting Sparrows", "Marginalia", "Wilted Sax", "Human Pyramid", "Hilma Af Klint In Ab", and "The Right To Silence". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Abdullah Sami/Peace Of TimeAll Praise Belongs To Allah ... LP
Abdullah Sami/Spiritmuse, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the rarest jazz records of the 70s Chicago scene – a set that's somewhat different than both the AACM sound of the period, and some of the more spiritual groups of the time! There's definitely a spiritual sound here, but the music also has some looser, loft jazz modes – and moves between more outside solos from Abdulla Sami on alto sax, and tuneful lines from Germahn Nazario on guitar. The core quartet was from Chicago – and also features drums and percussion by Wade Barnes, and bass by Hogan Jiggetts – but the recording itself was actually done in New York. The use of guitar in a cyclical rhythmic modes really sets the record apart – as does the very strong work on alto by Sami – a musician who's really deserving of greater praise than he's ever received! Titles include "Afrikan Samba", "Song For My Friends", "Peace Of Time", and "Aretia". LP, Vinyl record album

Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $13.99
A key album from a fantastic point in the career of trumpeter Chet Baker – his later years, a time when most of the world was ignoring Baker's talents, but Chet was still in a hugely creative mode, and turning out some of his freshest sounds in decades! There's a wonderful quality to the whole record – and vibist David Friedman is a key part of the sound, as he really matches the air inclinations of Chet, as the pair are backed by Buster Williams on bass and Joe Chambers on drums and percussion – a fantastic duo who only make things sound even better. 4 of the album's 6 tracks are Friedman originals – including "For Now", "Shadows", "Syzygies", and "Lament For Thelonious". CD features alternate takes of "Peace" and "Syzygies". CD

DeeDee BridgewaterLove & Peace – A Tribute To Horace Silver ... CD
Verve, 1995. Used ... $5.99
A modern classic from Dee Dee Bridgewater – one of her hippest albums of the later years, thanks to a great choice of material, and some really wonderful execution! The album's a beautiful set of straight jazz vocal readings of some of Horace Silver's best compositions, and it also features guest appearances by Silver and Jimmy Smith – both players who still had plenty going on at the time of the sessions. The real strength, though, is Dee Dee – as she proves once and for all that she's one of the best female true jazz singers of this era, capable of rich emotion on ballad tracks, and swinging free vocalese on more uptempo numbers. Titles include "Nica's Dream", "Pretty Eyes", "St. Vitus Dance", "Soulville", "Lonely Woman", and "Tokyo Blues". One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of the past 10 years! CD

A lost treasure from James Brown & The JBs – a vintage live performance from the early 70s, and one that captures the group at the height of their powers! The format here is very similar to the excellent Revolution Of The Mind set – a totally funky, totally righteous live performance that has James and the group even more energized than in the studio – working with the kind of razor-sharp intensity that made them a legendary funk act – leaping from tune to tune with nary a break at all! Bobby Byrd acts as the MC, and joins James for a bit of vocals – and the group at this point still includes Bootsy Collins on bass, plus loads of great guitar from Catfish Collins, and Fred Wesley on trombone and Jabo Starks on drums. Dave Matthews handled some of the arrangements – and titles include "Soul Power", "Sex Machine", "Bewildered", "It's A New Day", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Brother Rapp", "Super Bad", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag/I Got You/I Got The Feelin". Michael Cosmic/Phill Musra Group/World's Experience OrchestraPeace In The World/Creator Spaces/The Prayer (3CD set) ... CD
Cosmic/Now Again, 1974. New Copy 3CD ... $9.99 20.98
An amazing package – a pair of rare avant jazz albums, presented here together! The first album is Peace In The World – maybe the only album issued under the name of Michael Cosmic – but a set that's part of a key legacy with his brother, reedman Phill Musra! The set has Cosmic in very heady territory – sounds that come from his young tenure in the AACM, his brief time with Cecil Taylor, and his budding reputation on the 70s Boston scene – where the set was recorded, and almost stands as a precursor to the rich legacy of improvisational jazz that would emerge on the New England scene for decades to come! Tracks are long and very free, but have spiritual currents too – and Cosmic is mostly on piano, with Musra on soprano sax and tenor, Leonard Brown on soprano and tenor, John Jamyll Jones on bass, Huseyin Ertunc on drums, and Eric Jackson on percussion. Titles include "We Love You Malcolm X", "Peace In The World", "Sapce On Space", and "Arabia". Next is the related album Creator Spaces, by Phill Musra – recorded at the time when he was part of the very underground Boston avant scene – a world that had a slightly different vibe than music coming from Chicago, Detroit, or New York! The album's got a spiritual avant bent – soulful at the core, with lots of references to outer space as well – and an approach that feels a lot like a classic Saturn Records session by Sun Ra, both in sound and spirit! Musra plays reeds, chimes, and percussion – and the group features some incredible sax work by Michael Cosmic, who also plays a bit of organ, again in a tripped-out, Ra-type way. Huseyin Ertunc plays percussion – very free and loose, in ways that are a great balance to the more angular lines of the reeds – and tracks include "The Creator Is So Far Out", "The Creator Spaces", "Egypt", and "Arabia". Also features unreleased tracks "The Creator Is So Far Out (unreleased version)" and "Phyllis". Added to the set is a really special bonus third CD – an unreleased long live performance of "The Prayer" by Worlds Experience Orchestra – a group from the same scene at the time – with Shaddu Jones on piano, Stan Strickland on tenor and soprano, Frank Peterson on alto, John Jamyll Jones on bass, Robert Ruff on cello, Larry Lerner on drums, and John Klein on amplified violin. KPM/Def Presse, 2021. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic album from Damu The Fudgemunk, and a set that kicks off a whole new series in the sound library universe too – one that has contemporary producers getting access to classic samples from the KPM Sound Library catalog, while also adding their own music to the label too! Here, Damu samples classic sound library funk by Johnny Pearson, Johnny Hawksworth, Yvan Julien, Alan Hawkshaw, and other KPM giants – sometimes serving up instrumentals, but often adding in contributions from guests who include Raw Poetic, Blu, Nitty Scott, and Insight Innovates. Given that the core sounds are right up our alley, the record sounds fantastic – and if you're worried about this not being close enough to Damu's other records, put those fears aside – as the whole thing more than lives up to that legacy too. Titles include "Upload Optimism", "Enchanted Spirits", "Reporting", "Power Of Mind", "God Speed", and the "For Better Or Worse" suite. LP, Vinyl record album

Whit Dickey & The Tao QuartetsPeace Planet/Box Of Light ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2019. Used 2 CDs ... $16.99
Drummer Whit Dickey works here in two different quartets – both with strong work from Rob Brown on alto sax, but also with very different sounds – given the lineup of each group! The first quartet is on the Peace Planet half of the record – an amazing combo with Matthew Shipp on piano and William Parker on bass – both really reignited in recent years, and sounding tremendous with their longstanding sense of interplay – almost a unit in itself, but cut through with sharper lines from Brown's alto, and given an unusual sense of pulse by Dickey's drums! A different group plays on the Box Of Light half of the record, with a very different vibe – as the lineup features Steve Swell on trombone and Michael Bisio on bass – both musicians whose approach really changes things up. Swell's horn really competes with Brown's upfront, and Bisio's bass is maybe a bit more elliptical than Parker – very open and up and down the scale, in a way that seems to push Dickey's drums as well. Peace Planet titles include "Ancient Monument", "Suite For DSW", "Blossom Time", and "Seventh Sun" – and Box Of Light titles include "Eye Opener", "Ethereality", "Rotation Steps", and "Jungle Suite". Burton GreenePeace Beyond Conflict ... CD
Birdwatcher, 2003. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Piano from Burton Greene has always been a treat, and we've loved just about all of his records over his many decades in music – yet we're still surprised at how vibrant and powerful he sounds here – working in a trio setting, but with that sense of individuality that's always made Greene's music unlike anyone else's! The trio features Adam Lane on bass and Dave Brandt on drums – and the music is divided between these highly rhythmic numbers that have the pass, drums, and piano all leaping into the fray together – and other moments that have that more spiritual, meditative quality that Greene embraced strongly as the 70s moved on – a quality that's not quite spiritual jazz, and maybe has more of that element that you'd hear when Alice Coltrane might get more tuneful on her early records. Titles include "Carnival Of Mother Kali", "Sylosophy", "Gnat Dance", and "Peace Beyond Conflict". CD

As with other artists from the Holland-Dozier-Holland stable of hits in the 70s, Honey Cone have a massive amount of force behind their groove – so much so, the record might still be great even if the vocals were nothing special – but fortunately, the trio of Edna Wright, Shellie Clark, and Carolyn Willis bring plenty to the table too – a great sense of individual soul and all-together harmonies! Titles include "Who's Lovin You", "Stay In My Corner", "I Lost My Rainbow", "Ace In The Hole", "Sittin' On a Time Bomb", and "A Woman's Prayer". Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $13.99
A wonderful later album from these two Coltrane bandmembers – reunited here in the early 80s, working in a mode that's very much in keeping with their rich spiritual jazz legacy! The group on the album's a quintet – with Pharoah Sanders on tenor, Richard Davis on bass, and Jean-Paul Bourelly on electric guitar. Sanders' majestic tenor solos really make the album sparkle – as he's blowing in a mode that feels a lot like Coltrane, circa 1963, touched with some of his own raspy soul, which makes for a different edge. Titles include "Little Rock's Blues", 'Hip Jones", "For Tomorrow", "Korina", and "Origin". CD

An early 80s piano trio classic from Japan – one that features a group led by keyboardist Yasuhiro Kohno, and which also features a "plus one" vocalist on the final track! The style here is very much in the best Japanese mode of the 70s and early 80s – free-flowing lines on the keys that really take off with a great sense of freedom, yet never go outside, nor get too modern in their conception. There's a strong influence here from McCoy Tyner on most numbers – hinted at strongly by Kohno's original composition "Like McCoy" – which sits nicely alongside other originals "JC Blues", "Dancing Dolls", "Good Friday Blues", and "Fuji". Mami Mishina joins in on vocals for a version of Horace Silver's "Peace". CD

The set forges an instant bridge between contemporary modes and the 70s – but all in a way that's freshly forward, not retro sleepy – as Meshell bursts forth with this voice that sets a whole new standard for female soul, and one that doesn't need to reference Aretha or Chaka, nor pretend it was raised on hip hop either! There's a power to the record that just gets stronger with each fresh listen – as you'll hear on titles that include "God Shiva", "Stay", "Bittersweet", "The Womb", "The Way", "Leviticus Faggot", "Deuteronomy Niggerman", "Ecclesiastes Free My Heart", "God Shiva", and her great cover of "Who Is He & What Is He To You". Gordy/Anagram, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 25.99 On December 3, 2021
A real breakout album for Edwin Starr – and the kind of full-on set that really helped give his music a bold new focus! Starr had already scored nicely on some playful tracks from the Motor City scene of the late 60s – but here, he emerges as a singer with a lot more depth than before – not only on the righteous tunes, like the classic title track – but also on some of the warmer ones too, which showcase a new adult style of singing we might not have expected a few years before! Unlike other Motown efforts of this level, there doesn't seem to be any core arranger and producer – which means that Edwin himself did an even greater job of pulling the whole thing together – a great run of tracks that includes the classic "War (What Is It Good For)", a killer version of "California Soul", one of the best Motown-penned tracks from the time – and the tracks "Time", "I Just Wanted To Cry", "All Around The World", "At Last I Found A Love", "I Can't Replace My Old Love", and "She Should Have Been Home". Maybe the coolest record ever put out by the Luaka Bop label – and that's really saying a lot, given all the amazing albums they've given us over the years! The set's a perfect musical tonic for the times – a set of underground singles from the 70s, most of which fall in a space between the secular and spiritual – message-oriented, but not entirely from the scriptures – with a humanist message of positivity that's completely timeless – as powerful now as it was when these gems were recorded! The source of most of these records is from a gospel perspective, but they work a lot more in the territory of righteous 70s soul – making the same sort of shift that The Staple Singers or Voices Of East Harlem did on a better-known scale. Titles include "Peace In The Land" by The Gospel IQs, "We Got A Race To Run" by Staples Jr Singers, "I'm Trying To Be Your Friend" by The Soul Stirrers, "Don't Give Up" by The William Singers, "Let Your Light Shine" by Willie Dale, "It's Hard To Live In This Old World" by Rev Harvey Gates, "Time For Peace" by The Little Shadows, "We Don't Love Enough" by The Triumphs, and a great reworking of Earth Wind & Fire in "Keep Your Faith To The Sky" by Willie Scott & The Birmingham Spirituals. ✨✧ Damu The FudgemunkConversation Peace ... CD
KPM/Def Presse, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ AntibalasWhere The Gods Are At Peace ... LP
Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". Classic Jones Girls for Philly! The record's a landmark album in the shift from Philly disco to sophisticated modern – and the smooth tight vocals of The Jones Girls are to the latter half of Philly what the runaway singing of Three Degrees were to the early half. Includes their excellent remake of the Stylistics' "Children of the Night" – which has a cool sample riff on the intro – plus the cuts "I Just Love The Man", "When I'm Gone", "At Peace With Woman", and "Back In the Day". Tramp (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection, and one that goes deep deep into the farther reaches of the spiritual scene in the 70s – tracks that are way more obscure than music on labels like Strata East or Impulse, and which really show an evolution of music ideas at the time! The core style is jazz, but there are also other elements at play too – and the tracks are a mix of instrumentals and vocals, the latter of which have an especially wonderful quality! Some of the tunes are nicely gentle, almost quiet in spirit – while others have a bolder, more political approach – and the mix of tunes throughout is very fresh, and maybe even better than the first collection in this series. Titles include "Mother's Day" by Lenny Marcus Trio, "Africa The Beautiful" by Roland Hayes, "Muhammad Ali" by Jule Farmer, "Fulive" by Supa Lowery Brothers, "Themes & Variations" by Black Is, "Natural Life" by Natural Life, "Heal It" by Rama Dyushambee, "Ghana Cha" by Donn Preston Group, "Quernemoen" by Wayne Powell Octet, "Egg Nog" by Tommy Jones, "Attitude" by Organic Pulse Ensemble, "Brass Winds" by The Niambi Big Band, "Freedom" by Brother Yu Sextet, and "Ser Vi Tude" by James Scales & All Stars. Everland (Austria), 1977. New Copy ... $6.99 16.98
An interesting turning point for this funky Nigerian group of the 70s – as the set's still got the chunky rhythms of previous efforts, but also shows a touch of influence from reggae on some of the grooves – as well as some very cool use of keyboard touches that give the whole thing some nice electric currents! The sound is still nice and raw overall, and some of the best cuts have a straight funk approach that's really universal – grooves of the sort that you'd hear on an American funky 45, but maybe produced with that compelling sense of echo that makes so many west African records from the time sound a bit trippy. Vocals are in English throughout, and titles include "Everybody's Getting On", "Give Me Some Funk", "Jam All Night", "Make Your Self", "We Believe In Peace", and "No One Else". CD

Nessa, 1979. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
A well-titled set, given that Fred Anderson's been a missing link in Chicago jazz for many years – a bold tenorist with qualities that reach back to the heavy sax generation of the 50s, and a creative improvisor who's kept the AACM ideals alive and well in the Windy City for years! The session captures Fred in the late 70s, a really under-recorded point in his career (especially in comparison to his big revival of the past decade or so) – and Anderson's working with Larry Hayrod on bass, Hamid Drake on drums, and Adam Rudolph on percussion – in relatively freewheeling space that gives Fred plenty of room to solo! Titles include "Twilight", "Ballad For Rita", and "The Bull". CD features the bonus previously-unreleased track "Tabla Peace" – a cool number penned by Drake, with lots of nice percussion. CD

Superb work from pianist Richie Beirach – a set that's dedicated to Bill Evans, and which certainly embraces some of the key numbers in his songbook – but which also has that even more spacious sound that Beirach was bringing to his trio dates in the 70s! Richie's sense of timing and tone are fantastic – doing so much with so little, that Evans would have been pleased – although again, Beirach is hardly borrowing straight from Bill's style. Also fantastic is bassist George Mraz, whose way of inflecting notes and measuring color and mood almost rival the role of Eddie Gomez when playing with Evans – all balanced nicely by the work of Al Foster on drums, who's at his most subtle here. A killer bit of early funk from the great Hamilton Bohannon – and quite possibly his greatest album ever – a really unique approach to funky rhythms, with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The album's got a slower funk sound than Bohannon's later disco groove a few years later – and the wonderful rhythms mix together scattershot drums with funky wah wah guitar, organ, and hard-plugging basslines – all in a blend that's pretty mindblowing not just for its instrumental dexterity, but also for the way it brings complex patterns together in a really hypnotic way! The album's awash in modally grooving numbers that would have made Coltrane proud – soulfully swinging tunes that bounce along on tight piano, bass, and percussion – as Victor spins out some lean and exploratory lines on alto sax. The album features some nice work by a young Claudio Roditi, and the lineup shifts a bit from track to track – but Brasil's incredible tone and solo work on the alto sax really holds the whole set together, and offers up a new surprise at each track! Big Break (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
An incredible legacy of funk – from a group who were easily one of the tightest, sharpest acts in the mainstream soul scene of the 70s! BT Express are a combo who pre-date disco, and whose grooves went a long way towards forging the blueprint for that mid 70s movement – but their music also never went the way of the easy crossover hit, or the cliched mode of pop disco production – as the second half of the 70s only seemed to have the group digging in their heels and sounding even funkier than ever! Compression is the key to the BT Express sound – an ability to bring together many different elements and lay them down right on the money together – focusing things so that the complexity of their instrumentation is often understated, even though it's the quality that makes their grooves so great! This wonderful package really gets right to the core of the BT Express sound – picking all the right tracks from both their indie and major label years – and serving up 31 tracks that include "Make Your Body Move", "Happiness", "This House Is Smokin", "Mental Telepathy", "That's What I Want For You Baby", "Peace Pipe", "Shout It Out", "Sunshine", "This Must Be The Night For Love", "What You Do In The Dark", "Ride On BT", "Give Up The Funk", "Does It Feel Good", "Can't Stop Grooving Now", and "Do It Til You're Satisfied". An amazing tribute to the music of Ray Charles – served up here in a special package of tracks from his own Tangerine and Crossover record labels – a fair bit of which haven't been on the market for many many years, and which are presented here with an unreleased live set from the 70s! The package is book-style – with a hardcover jacket, and notes and photos of Ray and his associates – but the real treasure is the music, as there's plenty of tracks here that we're normally only able to track down on vinyl, either on the old albums from the 60s and 70s, or on some of the obscure 45s that were issued on Tangerine too! And although Ray experimented with other artists on the label, the main focus here is on Ray's vocals and talents as a bandleader – although CD5 does feature some duets from later years too. The 6CD set features 99 tracks in all – including 9 tracks from a never-issued live date in Stockholm in 1972 – plus other titles that include "Our Suite", "Ring Of Fire (live)", "We Can Make It", "Laughin & Clownin, "Booty Butt", "Feel So Bad", "Something", "Every Saturday Night", "There'll Be No Peace Without All Men As One", "I've Got A Woman (live)", "Crying Time", "Cincinnati Kid", "Together Again", "If It Wasn't For Bad Luck", "No One", "Hide Nor Hair", "Please Say You're Fooling", "I Don't Need No Doctor", "Living For The City", "3/4 Of The Time", and lots lots more! Posi tone, 2016. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
A killer guitar and Hammond session with a really sublime sort of sound – a groove that's wonderfully free of cliche – and which has an open, spacious quality that few artists can match! Given the instrumentation, the album's steeped in tradition, but never tries to just rehash an older Prestige Records vibe – and instead guitarist Ed Cherry and organist Kyle Koehler find a way of soaring out in their own spirits – opening up strongly in a bass-less trio that only features the drums of Anwar Marshall to keep things snapping along. The pairing is perfect – on the level of Grant Green with Larry Young, or Pat Martino with Don Patterson – yet very much with its own spirit, too. Cherry's arrangements are great, too – providing very fresh takes on familiar tunes, alongside his own compositions. Fantastic work from Johnny Clarke – one of the younger Jamaican vocalists to emerge in the 70s – given that he started recording at a time when the music had already crossed the Atlantic and was making some big global waves – leaving it to singers like Johnny to bring the whole sound back to the roots! Clarke's got this moody, almost mysterious way of singing – yet a vibe that's every bit as soulful as some of the more straightforward vocalists of the generation before – and that moody approach makes for a perfect blend with the gritty production work of Bunny Striker Lee, which often has the bass end of the speakers blasting out as much as the higher, warmer waves of sound from Johnny. This double-length collection might be the best we've ever seen on Clarke from the classic years – and it features great notes and detail, in the top-shelf 17 North Parade style. We loved Cochemea the first time around, but this second solo album is even better – a set that has the reedman really finding his own unique sound away from The Dap Kings – often blowing on an electrified saxophone, but in ways that are very different than late 60s experiments in that mode! The title's a reference to Cochemea's original family name, before Spanish colonization – and there's a rootsy vibe here that makes for a great blend with the electric sax – lots of earthy percussion, chanted vocals, some traditional elements snaking through the tunes – but all with a sound that's more than soulful enough to earn the record placement on the Daptone label! If anything, Cochemea's maybe found a way to help Daptone diversify its sound, and in the best way possible – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Black Pearl", "Baca Sewa", "Gurandera", "Peace Prayer", "Mimbrenos", "Chito's Song", and "Burning Plain". Impulse (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $18.99
Early work by Alice Coltrane – somewhat under the shadow of her late husband, as you'd guess from the use of his name on the front cover – but really stepping out here with a voice of her own! The Monastic Trio of the set features Alice on harp and piano – alongside bass from Jimmy Garrison and drums by either Ben Riley or Rashied Ali – both really fluid players who open up nicely in this way that's never to far out, at least in the way that John Coltrane was using rhythms at the time – but which allow Alice to really take the lead as a bold musical visionary of her own! Perhaps most exciting, Pharoah Sanders sits in on one of the album's longest tracks – blowing tenor with a force that's enough to bring back The Great One – but the real charm of the set is Alice's piano work, bubbling out here with a sensitivity that we never would have expected from the harder-edge sessions cut with Coltrane – that new level of spirituality she instantly brought to her own solo sessions. Dear Mr TimeGrandfather – The Dear Mr Time Anthology (Grandfather/Brotosaurs & Bling/Time/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1971/2021. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 30.99
A lost legacy of a very obscure psychedelic group – the mysterious Mr Time, who cut one classic album for Square Records at the start of the 70s – then disappeared for years, before reforming more recently, and giving the world some more wonderful music! The set begins with the group's classic album Grandfather – a pure gem that really matches some of the most creatively produced work of the period – hard rock echoes at times, but maybe a late psych sort of mix of fuzz and more sophisticated ideas – served up on these really beautiful tunes that come together to make a unified theme for the entire record! The album's billed as a comment on the life of one man from his birth at the start of the 20th Century to the time of his death – with titles that include "Light Up A Light", "On A Lonely Night", "Years & Fortunes", "A Dawning Moonshine", "Your Country Needs You", and "Make Your Peace". The set also features 13 more bonus tracks around the same time – demos recorded before the album, with lots of different songs – then the whole thing goes on to features the full albums Brontosaurs & Bling, and Time – both recorded by the reformed group from 2015 onward. There's more bonus material too – the box is a massive 65 tracks in all – and the whole thing comes with a big booklet of notes. CD

Ensemble Al-SalaamSojourner ... LP
Strata East/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $38.99
Sublime spiritual jazz from Strata East – one of the label's rarest recordings, and one of its hippest too! The set has an incredibly righteous feel – a blend of keyboards, saxes, guitar, percussion, and vocals that steps off with a very deep feel – one that's heavy on the best post-Coltrane modes of expression in jazz, and which really takes advantage of the freedoms of the Strata setting to open up the sound in really beautiful ways! Beatrice Parker handles the vocals, with a very warm and spiritual style that's not unlike some of the early, righteous recordings by Dee Dee Bridgewater – and other group members include Khaliq Abdul Al Rouf on saxes, Bevin Turnbull on keyboards, Mashujaa Aliye Salamu on guitar, Leroy Seals on bass, and Fred Kwaku Crawley on a host of hip percussion instruments. There's a slight undercurrent of funk on a few tunes, but most tracks are focused more in a soaring, spiritual groove – with titles that include "Circles", "The Sojourner", "Peace (Salaam)", "Traces Of Trane", "Ecstasy", "Music Is Nothing But A Prayer", and "Malika". Evans is at the peak of his early powers here – working with a straightforward rhythm combo that features Sam Jones on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums – but still hitting those beautifully fluid, beautifully spacious lines that set his playing apart from most who'd come before him. Tracks include 3 solo numbers – "Lucky To Be Me", "Peace Piece", and the very short "Epilogue" – plus trio tracks "Night & Day", "Minority", "Tenderly", and "Oleo". CD

✨✧ Sonny GreenwichSun Song ... LP
Radio Canada/Return To Analog (Canada), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
A gem of a record from the great Sonny Greenwich – an open-toned guitarist with a style that's unlike anyone else we can think of – a Canadian player who never got much exposure down here in the US, but who really stands apart from most of the jazz guitarists of his generation! There's this unusual sense of color and phrasing that really makes Sonny stand out – chords that almost feel as if they're broken open and exposed from a Wes Montgomery sort of tightness – able to move with a sense of fluidity, but a unique sense of rhythm that's definitely Greenwich's own. The rest of the group here really match the spirit of his music – maybe more so than on any other record of his as a leader – a great lineup that includes Don Thompson on electric and acoustic piano, Rick Homme on bass, Terry Clarke on drums, and Clayton Johnson on percussion. All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Peace Chant", "Lilly Lotus", "Parting", and "Starlight". LP, Vinyl record album

Muriel GrossmannElevation ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Fantastic work from saxophonist Muriel Grossmann – a player who's turning out to be as important to our generation as John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders were to theirs! Over the course of a handful of albums, mostly issued under the radar, Muriel has been building up this tremendous legacy in spiritual jazz – long-spun tunes that feature her burning work on tenor over some very unique rhythmic conceptions – usually modal, but delivered in a way that's very fresh, and which often has guitar filling a place that's normally held by piano – so that Grossman's horn takes off in this fantastic flurry of rhythm and color! The folks at Jazzman Records, strong supporter of spiritual jazz in its many forms, have put together this set as a great collection of some of Miriam's earlier, self-released records – a great introduction, but also an essential slice of her genius – with five long tracks that include "Elevation", "Rising", "Chant", "Your Pace", and "Peace For All". Blue Note (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 About October 20, 2021
Sweet sweet keyboards from the amazing Gene Harris – one of his seminal electric sides for Blue Note in the 70s – recorded between his earliest fame in the Three Sounds, and his later return to acoustic styles in the 80s! The sound here is equal parts jazz and soul – as Gene's working with vocalist/arranger Jerry Peters, who brings in a good deal of his own groove to the tracks – giving them a strong focus that's sometimes missing from other solo Harris sets. Both Peters and Harris play Fender Rhodes and other keyboards on the album – alongside a variety of players that include Donald Byrd on trumpet, Harvey Mason on drums, and Chuck Rainey on bass. Tracks include the Peters tunes "If You Can't Find Love" and "A Minor", a two-part remake of Duke Pearson's "Christo Redentor", the sweet stepper "Peace Of Mind", and a strong vocal take on Stevie Wonder's "As". Everland (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 43.98
A weird little album from early 70s Japan – an obscure project from Osamu Kitajima – who'd later be known for his jazz and fusion work! This set's completely different from those recordings – and is an Anglo rock project with lyrics in English, and a very groovy sound throughout! The music's got some of the softer musings of Donovan – and the vocals do too – but the guitars are often a bit more forceful, and have a bit of early Bowie intensity at times, especially when they're mixed with some fuller arrangements. If the set had come out of the Abbey Road late 60s scene, we'd hardly be surprised – but we like it even more for it's even weirder origins in Japan. Titles include "Sea", "You Know What I Mean", "A Tiny Island", "Good Bye", "Life", "To Live In Peace", "Love Makes The World Complete", and "Let's All Sing Along". LP, Vinyl record album

Beautiful work from Laurnea – some of her best ever! The set's got a polish and precision that we've never heard in her work before – a bold leap forward with a sound that really puts her at the forefront of the current soul underground. The album's a fiercely collaborative effort, and Laurnea works with a range of different artists from track to track – including India Arie, Angela Johnson, Nathaniel Burgess, and Davinia – somehow managing to bring out the best elements of all the guests, while still keeping a really unified sound. There's lots of strong acoustic touches on the best songs – creating an earthiness that offsets some of the smoother styles of earlier albums, and giving the album a real trademark sound. Titles include "I Remember", "Doin It For Me", "This Is The Last Song", "No Shame", "One Knight Stand", "Ain't Nothing Wrong", "Who I Am", and "Love Peace". Titles include "Nuki Suki", "The Prophet Of Peace", "Thomasine", "Second Line", and "It Ain't What You Do It's The Way How You Do It". The record's quite advanced for its time – and features Charles' tenor and flute next to piano by Don Friedman, bass by either Richard Davis or Eddie Khan, and drums by Roy Haynes or JC Moses – on titles that include Lloyd's classic "Forest Flower", plus "Little Peace", "Love Song to A Baby", "Sweet Georgia Bright", and "Bizarre". It's taken us a bit longer than expected to get this second installment in Maxwell's Black Summers' Night series – but it's been well worth the wait, given the greater depth in the music! All that we love about Maxwell's previous records is alive and well here – but there's also kind of a sharper edge to the sound, too – these fuller bottom currents that almost seem to be adding a second sort of instrumental commentary, alongside the lyrical activity up top – all while the whole thing is wrapped together with that warm keyboard flow that first made Maxwell stand out so many years back! Brad Mehldau somehow seems to have more of an edge, Mark Turner is warmer than usual, and Peter Bernstein makes his guitar ring out with bold colors and tones that really seem to hold the whole thing together! Remaining quintet members include Larry Grenadier on bass and Leon Parker on drums – both players who deserve equal billing with the M, T, and B – and titles include two takes on the great Jackie McLean tune "Little Melonae" – plus a version of Wayne Shorter's "Limbo, Horace Silver's "Peace", and the original tunes "Afterglow", "Phatasm", and "Belief". Nat Turner RebellionLaugh To Keep From Crying ... CD
Philly Groove/Chrysalis, 1969. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
The never-issued full length album from Philly funk combo Nat Turner Rebellion – a group led by Joseph Jefferson, who'd later write great songs for others – but who here is standing strong at the head of a very righteous group! Nat Turner Rebellion issued a few singles on the Philly Groove label, but never got the chance to give the world it's full length message – and this set was rescued from lost tapes at the Sigma Sound Studios by some students at Drexel University – a great lost legacy in sound, with a funky power and positive message that's maybe more important now than ever before! These guys often have the sock-soul punch of Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul – and titles include "Tribute To A Slave", "Love Peace & Understanding, "Fruit Of The Land", "Plastic People", "Getting Higher Together", and "Laugh To Keep From Crying". ✨✧ NickodemusEndangered Species (with bonus 7" single) ... LP
ESL/Wonderwheel, 2006. New Copy ... $23.99 25.99
The groove here is a compelling blend of Puerto Rican, African, and New York styles – bits of salsa, funk, hip hop, and more – all percolating together in the hands of Nickodemus and coming out in a whole new way! The sound is a lot less cliched than you might expect – and certainly nothing like mainstream crossovers of this nature – and the album's re-release is noteworthy, given all the attention Nickodemus has been getting of late. Guests include Ticklah, Quantic, Apani B, Malena Perez, and others – and titles include "Mi Swing Es Tropical", "Cleopatra In New York", "Give The Drummer Some", "The Spirits Within", "Back From Africa", "Bailamos En El Junque", "Mystery Of Life", and "Peace Pipe". LP, Vinyl record album

Rim Kwaku Obeng & The BelieversToo Tough/I'm Not Going To Let You ... LP
Sum Sum/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 29.99
Wonderfully groovy work from Rim Kwaku Obeng – an artist with African roots, but working here in the San Francisco scene of the early 80s – where he's clearly picked up a very international vibe in his music! Rim definitely plays some traditional percussion on the tracks, but there's also a more contemporary funky club approach too – a mixing of modes that's totally great, and which almost represents an 80s step forward for the already-great Bay Area soul vibe of the 70s! The first half of the set features material from the Too Tough EP – which has very cool female vocals, both a lead and a chorus – the latter of whom move around with the rhythms in this totally great way that almost feels like some New York cuts from the Danceteria generation. The second half of the set loses the female singers, but is still every bit as wonderful as the first – with these long grooves from Rim & The Believers that have the percussion, basslines, and guitars criss-crossing in even more amazing ways. Titles include "Shine The Ladies", "Love Me For Real", "I'm Not Going To Let You", "Peace Of Mind", and "I'm A Song Writer". LP, Vinyl record album

O'JaysBack Stabbers ... CD
Philadelphia International, 1972. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A landmark album for the O'Jays – a set that moved them from the indie ranks to 70s megasoulstatus! After years of bumping around on a variety of labels, and in a variety of styles, the group really exploded with this wonderful set – an album that has them soaring along in the righteous Philly groove of the early 70s – a sound that turned out to be a perfect foil for the trio's sublime, yet earthy harmonies. Arrangements are by some fo the best of the core Philly scene – Thom Bell, Norman Harris, Ronnie Baker, and Bobby Martin – and the album's overflowing with great tunes that completely redefine the sound of group soul in the 70s! Includes megahits "Back Stabbers" and "Love Train" – plus "Shiftless, Shady, Jealous Kind of People", "When The World's At Peace", "Time To Get Down", "Who Am I" and more! CD

William ParkerThrough Acceptance Of The Mystery Place (with bonus track) ... CD
Centering/Eremite, 1976/1981. Used ... $16.99
Early genius from William Parker – a set of work inspired by the poems of Kenneth Patchen, and performed with a really vivid sound overall! The players here differ from track to track – and the album comes together almost like a sonic suite – echoing some themes very slightly, not in a musical way, but more of an emotive one – gently lyrical one minute, but more boldly expressive at another. Players include Billy Bang and Polly Bradfield on violin, Toshinori Kondo on alto horn, Jemeel Moondoc on alto sax, Arthur Williams on trumpet, John Hagen and Charles Brackeen on tenor, and Parker on bass. Titles include "Rattles & Bells & The Light Of The Sea", "Desert Flower", "Through Acceptance Of The Mystery Peace", and "Commitment". CD also features a bonus track recorded in 1976 – "Face Hands Still Folded", with Billy Bang and Ramsey Ameen on violin, and Parker performing a recitation. CD
