✨✧ J DillaRuff Draft – Dilla's Mix (with bonus instrumentals CD) ... CD
Pay Jay, Early 2000s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
J Dilla at his grittiest, most rugged & raw – in both the production and rhyme realms – with all beats and rhymes by the Dilla himself! This set originally opened our ears to a different side of Dilla, a harder hitting aesthetic, with beats and grooves from out of leftfield that draw you in and hypnotize. This 2018 2CD version features the original and alternate mixes for the Ruff Draft EP on CD1 and Dilla's instrumental versions on CD2 – Titles include "Let's Take It Back", "Reckless Driving", "Nothing Like This", "The $", "Make'Em NV", "Crushin'", "Wild" (a rack that's nothing short of mindblowing – a minimalist masterpiece), "Take Notice", "Rock On" and more. 30 tracks on 2CDs! ✨✧ Allen ToussaintBright Mississippi ... CD
Nonesuch, 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A bigger step into a piano led jazzy style from Allen Toussaint – grooving in a timeless Crescent City influenced sound – a wonderful record, one we'll go back to for years to come! Allen's been a huge part of the New Orleans musical landscape for many, many years, and it's not a stretch to imagine he's had the laidback, but evocative jazz of the territory in his blood for just as long – so it's a wonder that he hasn't made a record like this before now. There's nothing cliche or cheesy in Allen's work here, which has kind of an after hours vibe that suits it well, and he's put together an outstanding group of players. Marc Ribot is on guitar, Don Byron on clarinet, Nicholas Payton on trumpet, David Piltch on upright bass, Jay Bellarose on drums, and guests Joshua Redman on tenor sax and Brad Mehldau on piano. Titles include "Egyptian Fantasy", "Dear Old Southland", "St James Infirmary", "Singin' The Blues", "Winin' The Blues", West End Blues", "Blue Drag", "Bright Mississippi", "Day Dream", "Solitude" and more. ✨✧ CommonLike Water For Chocolate ... CD
MCA, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
A huge creative leap forward for Common! Com had been slowly moving from a Chicago street poet role into a more universally conscious hip hop soul from record to record to this point, but Like Water For Chocolate is the one that really catapulted him deep into that realm – especially given the excellent, mood setting production of Jay Dee/J Dilla and The Soulquarians. For a little while there, we missed the rawer Relativity era vibe, and we didn't fall as head over heels for Like Water For Chocolate as the world at large did, but in hindsight, maybe we just weren't ready for it – it's easily amongst the best hip hop albums of the period. Titles include "The 6th Sense", "Cold Blooded", "Dooinit", "Geto Heaven Part Two" with D'Angelo, "Time Travelin' (A Tribute To Fela)", "Heat", "The Light", "Thelonius", "Payback Is A Grandmother", "Funky For You", "A Film Called (Pimp)", "Nag Champa (Afrodisiac For The World)", "The Questions" and "A Song For Assata".
