Paul SimonGraceland ... CD
Warner, 1986. Used ... $2.99
Paul Simon's mid 80s landmark – a record that brought together Simon's unique voice and pop folk songwriting skill with South African, Chicano, zydeco other global musical styles – held together by some of the best songs Simon ever put together! With lesser material, this would feel like the well-intentioned "world music" album by an aging star, but Simon transcends that in a big way with catchy, intelligent songs and expert production. Includes "The Boy In The Bubble", "Graceland", "Duanonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes", "You Can Call Me Al", "Under African Skyes", "All Around The World Or The Myth Of Fingerprints" and more. CD
(BMG music club pressing. Disc has some writing in marker.)

Paul SimonStill Crazy After All These Years ... LP
Columbia, 1975. Near Mint- ... $18.99
We've gotta admit, this record sounds a lot better with the passing of time than we might have expected – thanks in part to some totally sweet Fender Rhodes, used often, and in all the best ways to pepper the tunes! Barry Beckett and Bob James handle the keys – and there's even some gospel touches at times, thanks to help from the Jessy Dixon Singers and Chicago Community Choir. And Paul Simon's songwriting is mostly mature – and even on the hit "50 Ways", the drums from Steve Gadd more than make up for any clunk! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Paul SimonPaul Simon ... LP
Columbia, 1972. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first-ever solo album from Paul Simon – and a set that really showed the world he had a heck of a lot to offer on his own! Simon's still got all the great warm, personal tones of his late years with Art Garfunkel – but has also found a way to make things even more individual, too – sometimes borrowing from some other genres the previous pair never would have touched – sometimes just getting laidback and mellow, in a way that showcases his wonderfully maturing vocals! Tracks include the surprisingly funky "Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard" – plus "Mother & Child Reunion", "Duncan", "Congratulations", "Paranoia Blues", "Papa Hobo", and "Everything Put Together Falls Apart". Paul DesmondBridge Over Troubled Water ... LP
A&M, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $11.99
Paul Desmond serves up his own versions of some key tunes by Simon & Garfunkel tunes – with results that are simply amazing! The style here takes all the airy brilliance of the original S&G tunes, and turns it towards a more jazz-based mode – one that has some of the slight Brazilian undercurrents in the rhythms that you'll find on Desmond's previous two albums for CTI! The full arrangements are by Don Sebesky, who brings a great sense of balance to the set – and Herbie Hancock plays some great electric piano, in a group that also features Airto on percussion and Gene Bertoncini on guitar. But the real star of the set is Paul Desmond – blowing with that amazing tone of his – and sliding from tune to tune with effortless ease, in a way that really transforms these tunes in their instrumental readings. Titles include "Cecilia", "Mrs. Robinson", "America", "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright", and "Scarborough Fair" – all done with a sweet jazzy A&M approach! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and aging, lightly bent corners and a few small splits in the top seam.)

Miriam MakebaSangoma ... LP
Warner, 1988. Near Mint- ... $7.99
After hitting big success with Paul Simon's Graceland album in the mid 80s, Warners kind of had a little burst of renewed activity in recording the sorts of artists they paid attention to more in the glory days of the late 60s/early 70s record industry boom. Fortunately, Miriam Makeba benefitted from that surge of activity, and was able to cut this excellent album in a style that was far rootsier than any she'd used in years! The record has a pretty spare feel overall, and most tracks only feature vocals and percussion – with some occasional extra instrumentation, and production that's very much in the Ladysmith Black Mambazo mode from the time. titles include "Sabumoya", "Congo", "Icala", "Ihoyiya", and "Embahaceni". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Various76 In The Shade – Presented By Bob Stanley ... CD
Ace (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A really cool collection, and one that's got a very special focus – an imaginary soundtrack for the record-breaking British summer of 1976 – a searingly hot time that really pushed the nation to the brink! Bob Stanley's given us some great collections on Ace Records before – often with Pete Wiggs, or as Saint Etienne – and this set continues the very special vibe of those sets, by bringing together cuts that we never would have thought would work so well otherwise – a sublime mix of soul, rock, and pop – all glowing together with the warm vibe of the summer of 1976! Titles include "I'm Mandy Fly Me" by 10CC, "Walking So Free" by Spike Janson, "Sugar Shuffle" by Lynsey DePaul, "Liquid Sunshine" by John Cameron, "Not On The Outside" by Sylvia, "You Are My Love" by Liverpool Express, "You're The Song" by Hollywood Freeway, "Discover Me" by David Ruffin, "Stoned Out" by Simon Park, "Montreal City" by Azimuth, "Stay With Me" by Blue Mink, "Music" by Carmen McRae, "Rock N Roll Star" by Barclay James Harvest, "Fallin In Love" by Hamilton Joe Frank & Reynolds, "Inspiration Information" by Shuggie Otis, and "Miss My Love Today" by Gilbert O'Sullivan. Imagine the mixtape from Guardians Of The Galaxy, but done by a much hipper ear, and you'll get a good idea of this one! CD

✨✧ VariousMalu Mulher ... LP
Som Livre (Brazil), 1979. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the best late 70s Brazilian novela soundtracks – and a set that's got a fair bit more sophistication than some of the others in its genre! Part of the strength here is the album's use of top-shelf talent throughout – an array of mostly female vocalists who include Gal Costa, Elis Regina, Maria Bethania, Maysa, Simone, and Quarteto Em Cy – all working here on some really great tracks! Many of the numbers have a laidback and gently grooving quality – that warmly compressed MPB production style that often had traces of jazz – sung in ways that are sensitive, but never too soporific. Titles include a great version of the Joyce tune "Feminina" by Quarteto Em Cy – plus "Paula E Bebeto" by Gal Costa, "Comecar De Novo" by Simone, "O Bebado E A Equilibrista" by Elis Regina, "Mania De Voce" by Rita Lee, "Que Me Venha Esse Home" by Fafa De Belem, and "Dois Meninos" by Maysa. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has wear on the top and opening edge, which have also been taped. Vinyl is nice and clean.)

SimoneCigarra ... LP
EMI (Brazil), 1978. Very Good Gatefold ... $9.99
A great early album by Simone – a set that's very up close and personal – with the sort of intimate feel that we love in music by Joyce! Simone's vocals are nice and light – floating dreamily over backing from a small combo that has a lightly jazzy feel, plus some occasional larger orchestrations from Paulo Cezar Willcox. Elements of the Milton Nascimento generation definitely come into play here – but there's also a looser, less majestic quality to the music too. Gilberto Gil, Luiz Gonzaga Jr, and Nelson Angelo all make guest appearances on the record – and titles include "Cigarra", "Coisas De Balada", "Petunia Reseda", "Medo De Amar No 2", and "As Curvas Da Estrada De Santos". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousTo Love Somebody – The Songs Of The Bee Gees 1966 to 1970 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
Right from the start, the brothers Gibb were recognized as some of the most striking songwriters of their generation – a fact that's sometimes lost, due to the trio's later disco fame in the spotlight – which obscures their huge impact as songwriters from the early years! This set finally does justice to that legacy – and not only includes the rock and pop covers you might expect, but also a fair bit of soul tracks too – showing a remarkable appeal that the Bee Gees had early on for a soul audience – an influence that began long before the days in which they helped bring disco to the mainstream. There's some really wonderful tunes here – maybe less hits overall than in the usual Ace Records "songwriter" series – and the set features 24 tracks that include "To Love Somebody" by James Carr, "I've Gotta Get A Message To You" by Percy Sledge, "I Can't See Nobody" by Nina Simone, "Give A Hand Take A Hand" by The Staple Singers, "World" by Sharon Tandy, "Massachusetts" by Tommy Roe, "I Started A Joke" by Pat Kelly, "Spicks & Specks" by The Status Quo, "And The Sun Will Shine" by Paul Jones, "He's A Thief" by April Byron, "Town Of Tuxley Toymaker (part 1)" by Jon, "Morning Of My Life" by John Holt, "First Of May" by Jose Feliciano, "Words" by Bettye Swann, and "New York Mining Disaster 1941" by Velvett Fogg.
