Paul SimonGraceland ... CD
Warner, 1986. Used ... $1.99
Paul Simon's mid 80s landmark – a record that brought together Simon's unique voice and pop folk songwriting skill with South African, Chicano, zydeco other global musical styles – held together by some of the best songs Simon ever put together! With lesser material, this would feel like the well-intentioned "world music" album by an aging star, but Simon transcends that in a big way with catchy, intelligent songs and expert production. Includes "The Boy In The Bubble", "Graceland", "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes", "You Can Call Me Al", "Under African Skyes", "All Around The World Or The Myth Of Fingerprints" and more. CD

Warner, 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever solo album from Paul Simon – and a set that really showed the world he had a heck of a lot to offer on his own! Simon's still got all the great warm, personal tones of his late years with Art Garfunkel – but has also found a way to make things even more individual, too – sometimes borrowing from some other genres the previous pair never would have touched – sometimes just getting laidback and mellow, in a way that showcases his wonderfully maturing vocals! Tracks include the surprisingly funky "Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard" – plus "Mother & Child Reunion", "Duncan", "Congratulations", "Paranoia Blues", "Papa Hobo", and "Everything Put Together Falls Apart" – plus demos of "Me & Julio" and "Duncan", as well as an unreleased version of "Paranoia Blues". CD
(2004 digipack version with 3 bonus tracks.)

We've gotta admit, this record sounds a lot better with the passing of time than we might have expected – thanks in part to some totally sweet Fender Rhodes, used often, and in all the best ways to pepper the tunes! Barry Beckett and Bob James handle the keys – and there's even some gospel touches at times, thanks to help from the Jessy Dixon Singers and Chicago Community Choir. And Paul Simon's songwriting is mostly mature – and even on the hit "50 Ways", the drums from Steve Gadd more than make up for any clunk! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoArt Ensemble Of Soweto ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1990. Used ... $11.99
One of the more interesting later sessions from the Art Ensemble – one in which the group push their African influence strongly, by teaming up with the Amabutho Male Chorus for a real Soweto soul sound! Oddly, the Art Ensemble are the ones in African garb on the cover – while the chorus is going more for a late 80s American male fashion look – but in the grooves of the record, the two units come together nicely – and make for a set of tunes that have the AACM sound heading way way past Graceland (that's a Paul Simon/Ladysmith Black Mambazo reference, not an Elvis one!) – really coming up with some compelling cross-cultural sounds in the process. Titles include "African Woman", "Coming Soon", "Black Man", "Fresh Start", and "The Bottom Line". CD

Elton DeanUnlimited Saxophone Company (with download) ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1989. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
The title's a bit hokey, but the group's a great one – a saxophone quartet, led by Elton Dean and augmented by bass and drums, for a very unique sound! The style here is quite different than that of the over-used 80s sax quartet style – as the bass and drums propel the group into a much stronger groove, and relieve the other sax parts of any rhythm keeping, yet still allow them to be relatively free without any piano in the group. Dean plays both alto and saxello – and is joined by Trevor Watts on alto, Simon Pickard on tenor sax, and Paul Dunmall on tenor and baritone saxes – all coming together in a style that swings wonderfully, yet still has plenty of modern moments – with sounds that almost recall the greatness of Roland Kirk or George Braith! Titles include "Unda", "Rising", "Seven For Lee", "Small Strides", and "Fall In Free". CD

VariousGumba Fire – Bubblegum Soul & Synth Boogie In 1980s South Africa ... CD
Soundway (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99
Sweet electro grooves from the South African scene of the 80s – funky, soulful sides that are quite different than some of the nation's sounds that were getting bigger global play at the time! The 80s was a time of great worldwide awareness of the political struggles of South Africa and its people – and much of the musical exports were focused on righteous sounds that reflected that moment. Yet back at home, some of the biggest cuts were more playful and party-oriented – maybe provided as a respite from the challenges of society – as very clubby modes were an antidote to the hardship of life in New York. The grooves here are quite far from the sorts that Paul Simon and his compatriots were pushing up north – and much of this music is a fusion of 80s electro soul with more regional elements and maybe a bit of influence from the Caribbean – a bit like the clubby cross-cultural sounds from Paris at the start of the decade, but maybe a bit more gritty and beat-heavy overall. This set's one of the first to really dig deep into this generation for a global audience, and it's presented with the usual sense of care and history we've come to expect from Soundway Records – in a set of 15 tracks that include "My Brother" by The Survivals, "Mind Games" by Stimela, "Wayawaya" by Zoom, "Heartbeat" by Monwa & Sun, "Selallane" by Black Five, "Picnicing" by Starlight, "Africa" by Sabela, "Arrow Dub" by Zasha, "Listen To Me" by General Peter Maringa, and "She's Impossible" by Condry Ziqubu. ✨✧ VariousTomorrow's Fashions – Library Electronica 1972 to 1987 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A really cool set that documents the rise of the synthesizer in sound library music – not the weird, offbeat electronics that were getting recorded in the late 60s – but more tuneful, keyboard-based modes that really transformed the scene at the time, and helped change up the way sound library albums were produced! Shifts in technology often allowed just one artist to come up with a whole album of grooves – different than the past, when a full orchestra or small combo was needed – an approach that would soon transform the way that film scores were recorded as well! The package features some earlier 70s work that documents the initial moments of exploration, and is very heavy on late 70s/early 80s sounds – from labels that include Sylvester, Bruton, DeWolfe, and Chappell. Titles include "Coaster" by Simon Park, "Planned Production" by Warren Bennett, "Waterfall" by Chameleon, "Telecom" by James Asher, "Eagle" by Soul City Orchestra, "Astral Plan" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Infinity" by John Cameron, "Optics" by Unit 9, "Space Walk" by Rubba, "Leaving" by Sam Spence, "Northern Lights 1" by John Cameron, "Morning Dew" by Andy Grossart & Paul Williams, "Prospect" by Paul Hart, and "Tomorrow's Fashions" by Geoff Bastow. Heavy early 70s grooves from Randy California – the former Spirit guitarist, and a solid post Hendrix, post psychedelica album cut for Epic! An amazing array of southern soul – a 3CD package that's overflowing with classics in the genre, but which also features a fair bit of rare numbers too! The presentation of the whole thing is completely top-shelf – with a 72 page booklet that's almost worth the price of admission alone, supported with 3CDs of music containing a total of 75 songs in all! The set's divided up thematically – discs titled You Don't Miss Your Water, The Rainbow Road, and The River, respectively – and even if you've already got a fair bit of southern soul in your collection, you'd be hard pressed to find so much great music anywhere else, especially presented this well. ✨✧ Miriam MakebaSangoma ... LP
Warner, 1988. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
After hitting big success with Paul Simon's Graceland album in the mid 80s, Warners kind of had a little burst of renewed activity in recording the sorts of artists they paid attention to more in the glory days of the late 60s/early 70s record industry boom. Fortunately, Miriam Makeba benefitted from that surge of activity, and was able to cut this excellent album in a style that was far rootsier than any she'd used in years! The record has a pretty spare feel overall, and most tracks only feature vocals and percussion – with some occasional extra instrumentation, and production that's very much in the Ladysmith Black Mambazo mode from the time. titles include "Sabumoya", "Congo", "Icala", "Ihoyiya", and "Embahaceni". A damn great early moment from David Sanborn – a record that really shows the reedman at his best – working some tight solos over soulful backings in the same 70s manner as Tom Scott or Wilton Felder! Like both of those players, David's got the chops to step out in front of the backings strongly – blowing some of his best notes with surprisingly little flourish, and crafting a soulful lead that's supported by work from Hiram Bullock on guitar, Rosalinda De Leon on keyboards, and Victor Lewis on drums. There's a bit of vocals on the album – courtesy of Patti Austin, Lain Groves, Phoebe Snow, and Paul Simon – and titles include "Indio", "Smile", "Concrete Boogie", "Mamacita", and "7th Ave". Blue Note, 2018. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredible live set by Dr. Lonnie Smith – recorded during his 75th birthday celebration at NYC's Jazz Standard! It's mostly in a trio setting with Jonathan Kreisberg on guitar and Johnathan Blake on drums, working through raucous and intimate moments with equal skill. We saw Lonnie play not too long before this impeccable set was recorded, so believe us when we tell you, the next best thing to seeing him do his inimitable thing in person – even as late in the game as his 75th year – is right here! He wastes no time pulling us in with a great take on Wayne Shorter's "Juju", which feels SO good with Lonnie's electric keys, along with some great space for Kreisberg to shine, and the set has some wonderful mellower moments, too. Includes a killer cover of Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", Smith's own "Alhambra" and "All In My Mind", plus "Devika", "On A Misty Night"and "Up Jumped Spring". LP, Vinyl record album

A really cool collection, and one that's got a very special focus – an imaginary soundtrack for the record-breaking British summer of 1976 – a searingly hot time that really pushed the nation to the brink! Bob Stanley's given us some great collections on Ace Records before – often with Pete Wiggs, or as Saint Etienne – and this set continues the very special vibe of those sets, by bringing together cuts that we never would have thought would work so well otherwise – a sublime mix of soul, rock, and pop – all glowing together with the warm vibe of the summer of 1976! Titles include "I'm Mandy Fly Me" by 10CC, "Walking So Free" by Spike Janson, "Sugar Shuffle" by Lynsey DePaul, "Liquid Sunshine" by John Cameron, "Not On The Outside" by Sylvia, "You Are My Love" by Liverpool Express, "You're The Song" by Hollywood Freeway, "Discover Me" by David Ruffin, "Stoned Out" by Simon Park, "Montreal City" by Azimuth, "Stay With Me" by Blue Mink, "Music" by Carmen McRae, "Rock N Roll Star" by Barclay James Harvest, "Fallin In Love" by Hamilton Joe Frank & Reynolds, "Inspiration Information" by Shuggie Otis, and "Miss My Love Today" by Gilbert O'Sullivan. ✨✧ VariousOlha Que Coisa Mais Linda – Uma Homenagem a Tom Jobim ... CD
Som Livre (Brazil), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
The genius of Tom Jobim needs no introduction – which is one of many reasons why this loving set of tributes to his work is so great! The 16 track compilation is put together from a set of live performances dedicated to Jobim – and Brazilian singers of recent and classic vintage run through some of his greatest compositions in a warmly intimate setting. Titles include "Sem Voce" by Leila Pinheiro, "Garota De Ipanema" by Simone, "Corcovado" by Daniela Mercury, "A Felicidade" by Martinho Da Vila, "Insensatez" by Paulo Ricardo, "Aguas De Marco" by Joao Bosco, "Por Toda Minha Vida" by Ed Motta, "Wave" by Lenine, "Estrada Branca" by Chico Buarque, and "Luiza" by Carlinhos Brown.
