✨✧ Geri Allen, Charlie Haden, & Paul MotianLive At The Village Vanguard – Unissued Tracks ... CD
DIW/Somethin Cool (Japan), 1990. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really wonderful work from a perfectly-matched trio – an all-star lineup, even though pianist Geri Allen was just at the start of her career – and a group who'd already given the world a few different studio albums on other labels! The set follows up with more material from the group's sessions for DIW at the Village Vanguard – and trust us, the material here is every bit as great as the work that was first issued decades back – a perfect balance between the lyrical flights of Geri Allen on the piano, the warmly round basslines of Charlie Haden, and the measured drum work of Paul Motian – a set that's free of ego, and which really has all three players working in wonderfully sympathetic company. Titles include "Fiasco", "In Walked Bud", "Obtuse Angles", "Two Women From Padua", "Mambo Jumbo", "Song For The Whales", "Dance Of Infidels", "Dancing In The Dark", and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was". ✨✧ Paul Bley/John Gilmore/Gary Peacock/Paul MotianTurning Point ... LP
Improvising Artists Inc, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An excellent album – and one of the few rare non-Ra sides by John Gilmore! Bley's in perfect form at this point – working in an angular modernist mode that perfectly draws out sharp-edged tones from Gilmore's horn, and which is warmed considerably by great bass work by Peacock. We're not entirely sure if this material was issued on Savoy, but it appears to be very similar to tracks that were issued on one of the Savoy Jazz sets at the end of the 70s. Recorded in 1964 in New York – with tracks that include "Ictus", "Ida Lupino", "King Korn", and "Calls". Also features two tracks from 1968, recorded live at the University Of Washington – "Kid Dynamite" and "Mr Joy". LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie HadenCloseness ... CD
A&M/Universal (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99 About August 10, 2022 (delayed)
One of Charlie's best albums of the 70s – a beautifully stripped down set of duets with well-matched players that include Alice Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Paul Motian, and Keith Jarrett! The spare format is an extremely wonderful showcase for Haden's expressive bass work – and the intimacy of the tracks is different from some of the ECM recordings made during the same stretch – as the feel here is less a muted exploration of sound than it is a deeply personal interaction with some of the best talents of his generation. Tracks include "Ellen David", "For Turiya", "OC", and "For A Free Portugal". CD

Keith JarrettDeath & The Flower ... CD
Impulse, 1974. Used ... $9.99
Really wonderful early work from Keith Jarrett – a spiritually-driven session that's free from the cliches of his later work! The album's a spectacular group effort – one that has Jarrett playing piano, percussion, and sax – in an ensemble that also includes Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, and Guilherme Franco. There's a lightly percussive sound underneath most of the tracks – spare, organic, almost earthy – as the tunes open up and flower over a long passage of time – gently stretching out in that beautiful post-Coltrane Impulse spiritual approach to jazz of the early to mid 70s. Great stuff throughout, and with 3 long tracks that include "Great Bird", "Prayer", and "Death & The Flower". CD

✨✧ Keith JarrettEl Juicio (The Judgement) ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+ ... $16.99
Wild and wonderful work by Keith Jarrett – light years away from his records on ECM! The album features a quartet that includes Dewey Redman on tenor, Charlie Haden on bass, and Paul Motian on drums – but it's clearly Keith who's driving the bus here, taking lots of odd twists and turns for playful moments that come as an unexpected surprise. One of the best of these is the short percussion track "Pre Judgement Atmosphere", which almost sounds like a Moondog number – and another is the rollingly funky "Gypsy Moth", a tune that always seems to be careening out of control, but is never "outside", just percussively grooving. Side two features two longer jamming tracks that almost have a loft jazz feel – "El Juicio" and "Piece For Ornette" – and Keith plays alone on the track "Pardon My Rags". LP, Vinyl record album

Keith JarrettEl Juicio (The Judgement)/Life Between The Exit Signs ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1968/1975. Used ... $9.99
2 obscure early sessions by Keith Jarrett – back to back on one CD! El Juicio is wild and wonderful work by Keith – light years away from his records on ECM! Life Between The Exit Signs is early trio work by Keith, a bit straighter than some of his 70s recordings – but in a good way, with kind of a New York modern groove that reminds us of early work by Paul Bley or Steve Kuhn! The trio's a very progressive group – with Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums, making for a really open-ended approach to the rhythms – and the album includes the original compositions "Church Dreams", "Margot", "Long Time Gone", and "Love No 1 & 2". Columbia/Legacy, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A totally wonderful album from the young Keith Jarrett – and a set that's different than most of the pianist's other well-known modes – not his solo improvisations, not his successful trio material, and not even his more outside quartet modes of the 70s – but instead this incredible criss-crossing of sounds that really stands apart from most of his other records! The album features Keith on piano and soprano sax – an instrument he played more early on – in open, freewheeling tracks that often mix tuneful passages with more rhythmic pulsations – handled with a core group that includes Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums, working with guitar from Sam Brown, tenor from Dewey Redman, percussion from Airto, and some larger string and brass arrangements too! Jarrett also plays electric piano at times, and the album has some of the lyricism of Treasure Island, but with a very different vibe – spun out beautifully over the space of the double-length set. Titles include "Take Me Back", "Expectations", "Vision", "Common Mama", "The Magician In You", "Sundance", "Nomads", and "Bring Back The Time When". CD

Keith JarrettMysteries ... LP
Impulse, 1976. Near Mint- ... $11.99 14.99
Dark and moody work from Keith Jarrett – a record that builds strongly off his ensemble feeling of the Impulse years, but which also seems to carry a bit more of the introspective vibe he was building up in some of his more stripped down solo recordings! The group's still a great one here – with Dewey Redman on reeds, Charlie Haden on bass, Paul Motian on drums, and Guilhermo Franco on percussion – and the tunes, although long and somewhat free, still show Jarrett's great ear for a lyrical melody – carried off wonderfully without cliche, and still with more sharp edges than you might expect. Keith JarrettShades ... LP
ABC/Impulse, 1976. Near Mint- ... $13.99
A lost gem from Keith's "with horns" period – a quintet session from the mid 70s, recorded with a group that features Dewey Redman on tenor, plus Charlie Haden on bass, Paul Motian on drums and percussion, and Guilherme Franco on additional percussion. The feel is a bit straighter than Jarrett's excellent Death & The Flower set – as the tunes have a highly rhythmic component, and make good use of the extra percussion to create a flowing, organic groove. There's still a nice loose feel overall, though – almost a take on the loft jazz sound, especially at the moments when Jarrett goes a bit outside on piano. Titles include "Shades Of Jazz", "Southern Smiles", "Rose Petals", and "Diatribe". LP, Vinyl record album

Keith JarrettSomewhere Before ... CD
Atlantic, 1968. Used ... $4.99
A wonderful illustration of the inherent sense of beauty in Keith Jarrett's early work – an approach to piano that was simple, straightforward, and marked by a ringing sense of tone that's evident in the very first note of the set! Jarrett here isn't trying to break any rules in jazz piano, nor is he trying to go out of his way to make the world known of his presence – and instead, he's got a simple, subtle approach to the keys that's filled with tenderness and gentle tones – but not in a way that's hokey or overly sentimental. There's certainly echoes here of 60s work by Steve Kuhn, and of earlier records by Vince Guaraldi – but Jarrett also hints at a bold power underneath that seems likely to break out at every turn. The album's a live recording, with Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums – and titles include "A Moment For Tears", "Pout's Over", "My Back Pages", "Pretty Ballad", "Moving Soon", "Old Rag", and "Dedicated To You". Seeco, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
One of Tony Scott's best straight jazz sessions of the 50s – a wonderfully done small combo set that shows Scott beginning to move from straight bop into more modern modes! The album features Tony on baritone sax and clarinet – blowing with a well-chosen group of fresh modern talents that include Sahib Shihab, Bill Evans, Henry Grimes, and Paul Motian. Clark Terry also plays a bit of trumpet, but it's the Evans/Motian combination that seems to work the most magic – opening up the rhythms a lot, and really pulling some spacious sounds out of Scott's horn. Titles include "Five", "She's Different", "Blues For 3 Horns", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", and "Tenderly". LP, Vinyl record album

Alive, and plenty lively – one of our favorite albums ever to feature the team of Al Cohn and Zoot Sims – and one that has them really stretching out a lot more than usual! The album's got a format that's quite different than the tightly-reigned sound of Sims and Cohn on other dates – as all the four tracks here run for longer than nine minutes – really allowing lots of room for solo space – and some great interplay between the reedmen too! Phil Woods joins the twin tenors on alto for two tracks – and the rest of the group features Mose Allison on piano, Nabil Totah on bass, and Paul Motian on drums. Riverside, 1961. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Bill Evans trio with Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums – a near-perfect lineup that forever raise the bar for jazz piano expression! The title here is certainly apt – because even though many of the tunes are shortish, Evans has a sense of exploration in the way he's approaching the keys – one that still retains some of the lyrically rhythmic traces of his first few records – but which also glides forth into territory that was virtually untapped on record for the time. The revolution here is so subtle, it's easy to miss from the perspective of our generation – but give it a few listens, and the record will open up beautifully! An incredible album from Bill Evans – and maybe THE record you need in your collection if you're trying to understand his contribution to jazz! The album's one of Evan's first sides from the Village Vanguard – and features the legendary trio that included Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums – both players who could shake free from conventional rhythmic roles in a piano trio, yet who also support Evans' lyrically modal playing here beautifully! The tracks are a bit longer than Bill's studio sides from the time, allowing for even more magical interplay on the keys – and titles include "My Foolish Heart", "Waltz For Debby", "Detour Ahead", "My Romance", "Some Other Time", and "Milestones". ECM, 1983. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest records that Charlie Haden ever did, and a record that stands as sort of a bookend to his Liberation Music album on Impulse. As with that record, he's got a large group on here, and also like that one, he's playing a batch of tracks that have a definite political bent. Players include Don Cherry, Carla Bley, Dewey Redman, Paul Motian, Jim Pepper, and Michael Mantler; and tracks include "Ballad Of The Fallen", "Too Late", "La Pasionaria", and "The People United Will Never Be Defeated". ✨✧ Warne MarshWarne Marsh ... LP
Atlantic, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Genius, pure genius – and one of the few key sides by Warne Marsh as a leader! The album follows on Marsh's appearance with Lee Konitz on an earlier Atlantic album, but it really breaks free from the Konitz mode – and has an open, laidback sound that is instantly captivating – still modern, to be sure, but also done in a way that has some of the soulfulness of a Hank Mobley albums at times. Part of the reason for this is the group's rhythm section – which features Ronnie Ball on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and either Philly Joe Jones or Paul Motian on drums. And on the Motian numbers, Marsh is playing without piano – making for a coolly evocative style that really has the tenor dominating the sound. ✨✧ Eddie CostaHouse Of Blue Lights ... LP
Dot, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked album from pianist Eddie Costa – recorded in the late 50s for Dot Records! The set's a bit different than some of Costa's other material from the time – in that has Eddie playing with a much heavier touch on the left hand – inflecting the keys in a bluesier mode, but also working here with some modern touches from drummer Paul Motian, who's in the trio along with bassist Wendell Marshall. Costa's tone has changed decidedly for the record – and he's often got a loudly flowing approach to the keys that echoes later work by McCoy Tyner, Steve Kuhn, and other key 60s innovators. And even though tracks are again mostly familiar numbers, Costa's really pushing them to new levels – pushing, pausing, and twisting them into unusual time structures and melodic progressions. The session's especially noteworthy for the presence of drummer Larry Bunker – a great player who worked on countless recordings, both jazz and non-jazz, but who hits a new level here with the Evans Trio – one that almost matches that of Paul Motian for his sensitivity and lyrical interplay with Evans' piano and the bass of Chuck Israels! One of Bill Evans' landmark sessions with the young bassist Scott LaFaro – a player who made key contributions on every record he touched, then left this earth far too soon in his career! The live session's a perfect demonstration of the way that the Evans trio format not only re-worked the use of the piano in jazz, but also the bass and drums as well – as LaFaro's deeply evocative playing is paired with the equally fresh drum work of Paul Motian – heard here at his youthful early best, before some of his contributions to jazz had become cliche in the hands of other players. Verve, 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bill Evans is working with a really wonderful trio here – one that features Gary Peacock on bass and Paul Motian on drums – both budding young modernists who help Evans reach some new sounds on the set! The record starts out with a groove that's perhaps more inside than you'd expect – but it then quickly moves into the sort of sensitively-played numbers that really made Evans a key force in jazz during the early 60s – supported by equally personal work from Peacock and Motian, who both clearly feel free to move beyond common piano trio cliches. Tracks include "Dancing In The Dark", "Always", "Little Lulu", "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "Everything Happens To Me", and "For Heaven's Sake". CD

✨✧ VariousHyperituals Vol 1 – Soul Note ... LP
Soul Note/Hyperjazz (Italy), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A deep dive into the catalog of the legendary Soul Note label – the Italian imprint that became a huge host to American jazz musicians in the late 70s onwards – a company that helped to evolve both spiritual and loft jazz modes, and continue the legacy of free-thinking expression that was begun in the shadow of John Coltrane! The choice of cuts here is great – tracks that go past some of the obvious classics of the label, but which also resonate with those moments too – a well-chosen array of tracks that often focus on more rhythmic moments of the label, with strong spiritual and modal currents throughout. Titles include "Rain Shout" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Olduvai George" by Dannie Richmond, "Mwalimu" by Max Roach, "Ondas" by Nana Vasconcelos & Antonello Salis, "Aladdin's Castle" by Beaver Harris, "Hide & Go Seek" by Paul Motian, "Spirits Return" by Tony Scott, "Tribute To Bu (take 1)" by Andrew Cyrille, "Bouka" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang, "The Earth Spins" by Adam Rudolph, "Cubano Be Cubano Bop" by George Russell, and "Nu Tune" by Hamiet Bluiett. ✨✧ Bill EvansNew Jazz Conceptions ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bill Evans' first album as a leader – and a well-titled set that went onto transform the sound of the piano in jazz! The session isn't as lyrically free as some of Evans' later classics, but already has an undeniably fresh approach to the keys – one that's modern, yet never academic – fluid, but never flowery – pure genius of economy and understatement, while also at the same time opening bold new worlds in sound. The trio features drummer Paul Motian and bassist Teddy Kotick, and titles include the classics "Five" and "Waltz For Debby", the latter of which is performed solo by Evans – plus tracks that include "Displacement", "I Love You", "My Romance", "No Cover, No Minimum", and "Our Delight".
