✨✧ VariousFlash Records Story – Popular Platters Recorded & Retailed ... CD
Flash/Ace (UK), Late 50s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A reverent, nicely put together telling of the Flash Records Story – Charlie Reynolds' record label and retail outpost in mid-to-late 50s LA that put out numerous incredible R&B, raucous doo wop and otherwise jumpin' singles in the latter half of the decade! This collection is incredibly comprehensive – featuring nearly all of the Flash releases from 1955 to 1959 – and it's got rumbling rhtythm & blues, tender proto soul numbers, solo vocal belters, cooing doo wop groups and and more! This Ace collection is beautifully well done even by their excellent standard – with thick, 40 page booklet with excellent notes and filled with great photos – and it features 60 tracks on 2CD. Includes "Hurry, Hurry Baby" by Sidney Maiden, :The Devil's Cousin" by The Jayhawks, "It Ain't To Play With" by Sheryl Crowley, "Gonna Hold On" by Frank Patt, "Ooh-La-Cha-Cha" by The Fabulous Preston Combo, "Mr Boogie" by Judge Davis, "Hambone" by Mamie Jenkins", "Annie May" by The Arrows, "Don't Go Baby" by The Cubans, "Are You Alright?" by Paul Clifton, "Slow Down" by Gus Jenkins and many more. Casablanca, 1977. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Classic disco from Pattie Brooks – a soaring 70s set that was right up there with the best Casablanca Records grooves of the time! The rhythms here are upbeat and lively – strings mixed in with quick-stepping rhythms, all set to the vocals of Pattie, which have just the right sort of flow to take off nicely in the setting! Titles include "Love Shook", "Let's Make Love To The Music", "Girl Don't Make Me Wait", and a totally cool "Pop Collage Medley", which features bits of "Popcorn" and "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye". ✨✧ King Tubby & Carl PattersonPsalms Of Drums ... CD
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
While most of the reissue compilations paying tribute to Tubby's work have focused on his great work with Striker Lee, this is the first to highlight the much sought after tracks released on the small Black & White label, produced by Carl Patterson. There's a couple of Dillinger DJ tracks and a few with some nice vocals, but the ones we're checking for are the dubs, with the inimitable Tubby touch laid on them: "Pslams of the Drums", "Sabotage", "Liberation Front" and "Watchman Dub". Rod Levitt OrchestraDynamic Sound Patterns Of The Rod Levitt Orchestra ... LP
Riverside, 1964. Near Mint- ... $11.99
"Dynamic" is right – as Rod's one of the hippest large group arrangers of his time! The album's a really wonderful record that features Rod leading an octet with a distinctly modern touch – almost building off the styles of Kenton groups of the 50s, but with more of the energetic twists and turns of some of the west coast groups of later years. Players are mostly lesser-known names – save for trumpeter Rolf Ericson – and the album features some really great tenor work by George Marge, who we only know from this record. Tracks are angular and fresh, but always nicely swinging – and titles include "Holler", "Jelly Man", "El General", "Upper Bay", and "Ah! Spain" – all by Levitt! LP, Vinyl record album

Patti PageLet's Get Away From It All ... LP
Mercury, 1957. Very Good ... $1.99
A travel-themed set from Patti Page – and a pretty darn great one at that! Patti nicely shakes off some of cliches here – working with full, jazzy backings, and often hitting sounds that are a bit more mature than on her familiar pop numbers – modes that nicely match the global scenes and locales featured in most of the tunes. And while the gimmick is a relatively common one for 50s vocal dates, the mix of worldly tunes really does wonders with Patti – making the set a real standout in her Mercury catalog. Titles include "Mississippi Mud", "South Of The Border", "April In Paris", "Just A Little Bit South Of North", "Basin Street Blues", "Let's Get Away From It All", and "Under Paris Skies". Patti Page is playing off the success of her late 50s TV show here – and offers up a set of swinging arrangements from the program, exactly as they were done for the TV audience! The style's a bit different than Patti's bigger hits – and showcases a wider range of musical modes, often ones that are more optimistic and cheery than the lovelorn themes that dominated the singles. Titles include "It's A Pity To Say Goodnight", "Sometimes I'm Happy", "Crazy Rhythm", "When Day Is Done", "Then I'll Be Happy", and "The Gypsy". LP, Vinyl record album

Patti PageWaltz Queen ... LP
Mercury, 1957. Very Good+ ... $1.99
Patti Page is working here to class up her image from the country waltz sound of her biggest hit – and is going instead for a waltzing mode that's more traditional, and which brings out the duskier side of her vocal talents! Don't get us wrong, there's not a lot of Strauss in the mix – it's just that the arrangements of tunes all have a lightly dancing, gently waltzing quality – one that still preserves the syncopated rhythms of Patti's bigger singles, yet which takes them out of the country pop side of the spectrum, and showcase Page as a singer with a deeper range. Backings are by Vic Schoen, and titles include "What'll I Do", "Memories", "Till We Meet Again", "Remember", "Now Is The Hour", "Wondering", and "You Will Find Your Love In Paris". A great one from Hammond giant Don Patterson – served up in that lean trio style that made his 60s work so great! The group features very fluid drums from Billy James, guitar from Vincent Corrao, and plenty of deft work on the keys from Don himself – on titles that include "Uptight", "Wade In The Water", "La Bamba", "Love Letters", "Wee Dot", and a surprisingly nice version of "Strangers In the Night" – one that grooves for over seven minutes! Kellee PattersonAll The Things You Are (with bonus track) ... CD
Shadybrook/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $24.99
Kellee Patterson's far from her early jazz roots on the Black Jazz label – but that's A-OK with us, as she's changed up modes with an upbeat soul style that's equally nice – but in a very different way! At some level, the shift is a bit like that made by Jean Carne during the same period – as Patterson's got roots in jazz, which really helps her bring the most out of a tune – but also merges with more sophisticated modern soul modes, all handled here by Gene Russell – another former labelmate at Black Jazz, and Kellee's partner too. Titles include a groovy uptempo remake of "All The Things You Are", plus originals "Let Go Let Go", "Nice Girl", "How I Love Your Smile", and "Fancy Dancer". CD features the bonus track "Let Go Let Go (promo 12" Roy Thode disco mix)". CD

Shadybrook/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... On June 12, 2021
Kellee Patterson's amazing first album for the Shadybrook label – a total killer all the way through, and much harder and heavier than any of her later sides for the label! The record's got a nice jazzy vibe that's a good bridge between her earlier work on Black Jazz, and her later, straighter soul material – a dose of funk in all the right places, and a touch of spiritual leanings too – really put together with a wonderful feel that sets the album apart from much other work of the time! Includes a sublime breakbeat version of "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby" – with killer drums, and an excellent monologue at the beginning – plus a great cover of Grover Washington's "Mister Magic", with some interesting vocals. Other titles include "Time To Space", "What You Don't Know", and "I Love Music". Gene Russell handled production and arrangements, too! Kellee PattersonMaiden Voyage ... LP
Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 23.99
The most righteous album ever from Kellee Patterson – her first record, and a set that's way different from her more soul-based sides of later years! The album's got Patterson working in a wonderfully soulful approach to jazz – a style that's not unlike the earliest work by Dee Dee Bridgewater, especially her seminal Afro Blue album – and which mixes Kellee's unique vocals with some very hip backings that are right in the best Black Jazz mode! Instrumentation is from a loose jazz combo, and the tunes are a mix of jazzy numbers and a few tighter tracks – a really rich array of sounds that comes together beautifully in the hands of producer Gene Russell. Titles include a stellar version of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage", a great take on the Flip Nunez number "See You Later", and the tracks "Soul Daddy", "Be All Your Own", "Magic Wand Of Love", "You", and "Look At The Child". Kellee PattersonTurn On The Lights – Be Happy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Shadybrook/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $24.99
Mighty nice work from Kellee Patterson – a singer who should have been huge, given her range of expression – but who's maybe even better as one of the underground soul stars of the 70s! The music here is really a cut above the commercial at the time – tunes that echo some of the uptempo modes of the clubs, but which are always trying for something different too – maybe like some of the hipper female vocal recordings on Philadelphia International, handled here by producer Gene Russell and arranger Larry Farrow. Patterson can soar high one minute, hit some earthy notes the next – and the set's full of original material that really helps her find her groove. Titles include the southern soul styled groove "If It Don't Fit Don't Force It", the slinky "Turn On The Lights", and the cuts "Moving In The Right Direction", "Heaven", "I'm Coming Home", "Let's Hold On To Love", and "Be Happy". CD features bonus tracks – "If It Don't Fit (single version)", and "Turn On The Lights (phase 1 & 2 – single version)". CD

RCA (Italy), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
Patty Pravo looks a bit creepy on the cover, but the images inside make her look really lovely – and the sound of the record lies somewhere in between! The album's in the territory of offbeat late 60s work by Rita Lee or Brigitte Fontaine – equally distinct, and a strong statement from a singer who could have stuck in the mainstream, but chose to explore lots of unusual territory on these tunes – a mix of modes that runs from dreamy to groovy to downright spooky – with some nice help on arrangements from Paolo Ormi. The songs include many familiar numbers, transformed in the approach – and titles include "The Day That My Love Went Away", "Per Te", "La Tua Voce", "Motherless Child", "Il Mio Fiore Nero", "Non Je Ne Regrette Rien", "Perche Sei Il Mio Uomo", and "Una Conchiglia". Brilliant minimal work from Steve Reich – pre-fame performances that really get to the core of minimalist composition from the start of the movement – played by a hip small group of musicians that includes Reich, Steve Chambers, Art Murphy, and Philip Glass! "Four Organs" is a wonderful combination of the instruments mentioned in the title – coming together with a cool drone-building quality, and driven by some very slight, soft rhythms on maracas – very cool, and relatively spare – but with a compelling sound that definitely shows that Reich and his contemporaries were onto a whole new groove. "Phase Patterns" has organs again - and is a slow, subtle exploration of Reich's early ideas on patterns of phase shifting – delivered here in a spare, stark, simple way that really hooks you into his musical ideas, in ways that some of the larger concept records sometimes fail to do. United Artists, Mid 60s. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Surprisingly sweet pop from kid actress Patty Duke – a set cut at a time when the right sort of studio backdrops could make just about any sort of voice into a hit record! The main maestro here is Arnold Goland – whose talents for a warm melody and jaunty rhythm really help Patty emerge as a singer without doing that much on her own – just serving up poppy lyrics with the same undercurrent of darkness you'd find in her screen appearances in film and TV – almost an eerie sense of loneliness, and a longing for the John Astin to come in her life! Patti Page at her grown up best – sounding wonderful on this 50s album that shows that she was way more than just a pop singer – and instead a rich-toned vocalist capable of surprisingly great delivery! The backings have a slightly modern edge – not June Christy at Capitol, but maybe not that far off either – and although there's a fair bit of strings at times, they often have these tones that set off just the right sort of darkness for the tunes – and bring inflections to the music that we don't always hear with Patti. Yet the Page punctuation is still also nicely in place, especially on the few swingers – and titles include "We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye", "Indiscretion", "Autumn Leaves", "Everything Happens To Me", "I'll Walk Alone", and "You Call Everybody Darling". A mighty pairing of organist Don Patterson and saxman Sonny Stitt – one of Patterson's grooviest late 60s outings, thanks to an excellent sound from all players involved! Stitt plays Varitone sax on the date, which gives his horn a cool electric feel that really sounds wonderful next to Don's work on Hammond – and Grant Green's also in the group, serving up some great single-line solos that are almost more in his early 60s style than his Blue Note work from this same period. The group's rounded out by Don's regular drummer Billy James – a wonderful player with a great ear for unusual rhythms! Tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Walk On By", "Creepin Home", and "Brothers 4". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1964. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tasty set of extended organ/tenor grooves – one full album, plus bonus tracks! The core album here is The Exciting New Organ Of Don Patterson – a well-titled session, given the strong early groove of organist Don! At a time when some of his contemporaries were tightening things up on the Hammond, going for shorter tunes aimed at the jukebox and radio crowd, Don Patterson was a great reminder that the organ was best used on longer jamming tracks – tunes that stretched out nicely with a style that was heard best in the clubs, where an organ player could really do his thing. Patterson's trio here is quite stripped down – just drums from Billy James, and tenor from Booker Ervin – another player who always knows what to do with plenty of space! Titles include versions of "The Good Life", "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", and "Oleo", plus two Patterson originals – "Up In Betty's Room" and "S'Bout Time". Added to these tracks are 2 more – the 16 minute "Hip Cake Walk", which features alto from Leonard Houston too, plus "Love Me With All Your Heart". CD

A classic set from Patto – a group who were never huge at the time, but who've gone onto become one of the best-remembered acts from the Vertigo Records scene – thanks to the sound of this amazing debut! The record is extremely hard to peg – it's definitely got some jazz inspiration in the way the songs are put together – especially since group member Ollie Halsall uses some great vibes – but the whole thing's hardly a jazz rock set at all – as the tunes are maybe more open at times, or a bit gritty at others – always topped by the unique vocals of Mike Patto. The record is both freewheeling and down to earth at the same time – a hard thing to pull off – and titles include "The Man", "Hold Me Back", "Time To Die", "Red Glow", and "Government Man". One of the last John Patton albums for Blue Note, and one of the best! A young James "Blood" Ulmer's on guitar, and Marvin Cabell (who we only know from Patton LPs) is on tenor and flute. The sound is deep and soulful, and despite the "accent on the blues" of the title, the feel's more Blue Note soul than it actually is bluesy. Ulmer's guitar is great, with this raspy edge that gives a nice depth to the album – and titles include reat versions of Harold Mabern's "Rakin' & Scrapin" and Eddie Harris' "Freedom Jazz Dance", plus some excellent originals by Cabell like "Captain Nasty" and "Village Lee". Plus, this CD reissue also features 4 other tracks, 3 of which are unreleased titles like "Sweet Pea", "2 J", and "Buddy Boy". CD

Nilva (France), 1983. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure session by John Patton, and a great one too! The set was recorded sometime between the end of Patton's successful run at Blue Note, and before he was rediscovered, and brought back out into the light by John Zorn and other younger players who appreciated his skill. The style of the album's great – in a mode that really recalls the farther-reaching organ work of Pattons' later Blue Note years, not exactly as modern as players like Larry Young, but clearly inspired by a freedom that was coming into use of the organ at the time. The group's an all-star one, too – with Grachan Moncur making a rare organ jazz appearance, Melvin Sparks on guitar, Grant Reed on tenor, and drummer Alvin Queen (who's label the set was recorded for), laying down some dexterous rhythms that remind us a bit of Hugh Walker's work on some of Patton's best Blue Notes. Includes a great reading of Dusko Goykovich's "Soul Connection", plus versions of Moncur's "Space Station" and "The Coaster". And oddly, this one turns up less than most of Pattons' albums from the 60s! LP, Vinyl record album

A big one for Patti Austin – and a set that moved her from the jazz/soul sidelines right into the mainstream – but all without losing any of her charm from before! A big part of the record's success comes from the production work of Quincy Jones – a longtime associate who gave Patti some key exposure on earlier records of his own, and a great choice to handle the mix of sophisticated soul and jazzy moments on this set. The record features some key tunes penned by Rod Temperton – and James Ingram duets with Patti on the crossover classic "Baby Come To Me" – nestled nicely alongside other cuts that include "The Way I Feel", "Do You Love Me", "The Genie", "Stop Look Listen", "The Island", and "Symphony Of Love". A real cooker from the great Hammond hero Don Patterson – a set that adds in the trumpet of Blue Mitchell and tenor of Junior Cook – in addition to Don's core trio of Pat Martino on guitar and Billy James on drums! The addition of horns takes the material places that Don's earlier albums didn't go – and the record's got some nice long groovers like "Opus De Don" and "Sir John" – all very nice! ✨✧ John PattonLet 'Em Roll ... CD
Blue Note, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully wicked meeting of the minds – and a legendary bit of soul jazz from organist Big John Patton! The core of the record features the usual Patton groove – with John on Hammond, Grant Green on guitar, and Otis Finch on drums – but added to that mix is Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, making a rare appearance on an organ jazz session, with some wonderful results! The combination of vibes and organ is especially haunting – jangling a groove with a really modal feel, and creating a sound that instantly made this one stand out from the pack! The whole thing's great, and tracks include "The Turnaround", "Let Em Roll", "Latona", and "One Step Ahead". CD

Arista, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Among the best of the best of early Patti Smith albums – the Easter LP from 1978 – also her biggest hit ever! Easter splits the difference between accessible, if rawly impassioned rock & roll and more raucous and in yer face rebellious poetry. There's a stylistic gulf between the more delicate songs and the rawer ones, and that tension makes for a more amazing record overall. Titles include "Till Victory", "Space Monkey", "Because The Night", "Ghost Dance", "Privelege (Set Me Free)", "We Three", "25th Floor", "Easter" and more. CD

✨✧ Kellee PattersonMaiden Voyage ... CD
Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky Texas soul from the mighty Bobby Patterson – a singer who also recorded for the Jewel/Paula label in the early 70s, but who's heard here on earlier work for Jetstar Records, plus a few never-issued tracks! Bobby's voice has this great raw style – one that crackles even more as the grooves move faster – really hitting with sock-soul energy on just about every track in this set – clearly inspired by the music of James Brown, but very much off into his own bag – a special funky legacy that's very much Patterson's own! Titles include "My Thing Is Your Thing", "Busy Busy Bee", "Mama's Got A New Bag Too", "TCB Or TYA", "Soul Is Our Music", "I'm Leroy I'll take Her", "I'm A Slave To You", "What A Wonderful Night For Love", "Broadway Ain't Funky No More", "My Baby's Coming Back To Me", and "The Knock Out Power Of Love". Gene AmmonsLate Hour Special ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1964. Used ... $9.99
Very nice album by Jug that often gets overlooked because it's comprised of 2 different sessions, and can't get the "historical" writeup of being a single significant moment in the studio. Some tracks – including "Lascivious" and "Soft Winds" – are with a tight quartet that features the very soulful piano of Patti Brown. The others are with a larger group that has a whole horn section backing Jug up. The sound's a bit unusual for his records of the time, but it also gives him a great platform to work from, and he wails out of the group on his solos. Other titles include "Lullaby Of The Leaves" and "Things Ain't What They Used To Be". CD

Gene AmmonsSoulful Moods Of Gene Ammons ... LP
Moodsville, Early 60s. Good+ ... $7.99
Beautiful beautiful work from tenorist Gene Ammons – and an album that really demonstrates that during the 60s, one of Ammons' strongest suits was his work with a mellow tune or ballad! The tracks here are wonderfully laidback, but never sleepy – very soulful, and solidly put together in that Ammons-made gentle-blown way – using just a few notes to send the message out with a powerful punch, without ever overdoing things the way that a few of his tenor contemporaries might be tempted to do! The group's a great fit too – with the lovely Patti Brown on piano, plus bass from George Duvivier and bass from Ed Shaughnessy – and titles include "Two Different Worlds", "Skylark", "Three Little Words", "Street Of Dreams", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". ES Mangione (Brazil), 1960s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Some of the most important electro-acoustic music to come from the Brazilian scene in the 60s – recordings that are every bit as powerful as similar experiments from Europe at the time, particularly the revolutionary talents working in Paris! Jorge Antunes takes a big page from their book, and works with lots of electronic wave patterns, tape loops, and other effects – to create these sounds that often begin in more familiar postwar patterns from the academic world, but often move into much noisier territory – really pointing the way forward for the European underground of the post-punk generation. Works include "Valsa Sideral", "Contrapunctus Contra Contrapunctus", "Auto Retrato Sobre Paisaje Porteno", "Cinta Cita", and "Historia De Una Pueblo Por Nacer". LP, Vinyl record album

The Beat Bronco Organ Trio are more than great enough at the core, but they also offer up some great surprises over the course of this fantastic full length album – including slight use of clavinet and mini-moog by Gabri Casanova, who mostly handles the Hammond in the lead – and guest work at a few spots from Chip Wickham on flute and electric piano! There's a few other players who drop in along the way – but the core groove here is from the trio, who not only replicate a 60s soul jazz vibe, but also move things through a deep funk legacy – maybe more in the mode of the Sugarman Three than a Don Patterson or Jack McDuff combo on Prestige – as there are rhythms and elements that pick up bits of 70s funk. Drums are by Antonio Pax Alvarez and guitar is by Lucas De Mulder – and titles include "Hard Play", "Crispy Time", "Easy Baby", "Hey Hey", "Squirtly", "Under Pressure", "Road Trip", and "Electro Pi". Def Jam, 2010. Used ... $2.99
A solo set from once and hopefully future half of Outkast Big Boi – and he delivers big here for Def Jam – classic Outkast level excellence from Sir Lucious Leftfoot! Production by Organized Noize, Scott Storch, J Beattzz, DJ Cutmasta Swiff and others, many songs with co-production credit to Big Boi, and we would take that seriously. The way his deft, charismatic rhymes meld with spacey thumping funk beatcraft doesn't feel like a batch of commissioned productions, but a unique, flowing tapestry that's got Big Boi written all over it. Fantastic and heartening to us to see a hip hop veteran and longtime favorite delivering this sharply and adventurously after all these years. 15 tracks: "Daddy Fat Sax", "Turns Me On" with Sleepy Brown & Joi, the instant classic single "Shutterbugg" feat Cutty, "General Patton", "Tangerine" feat TI & Khujo Goodie, "Hustle Blood" feat Jamie Foxx, "Be Still" with Janelle Monae, "Fo Yo Sorrows" feat George Clinton , Too Short & Sam Chris, "Shine Blockas" feat Gucci Mane, "Back Up Plan" and more. Soulful fusion from The Brecker Brothers – a set that's one of their standout efforts from the 70s – and a record that went onto influence a whole generation of jazz musicians too! The album features the twin horns of Randy & Michael Brecker, along with alto by David Sanborn, keyboards by Don Grolnick, and guitar by Steve Khan – but one of the things that really makes the album great is the vocal arrangements, which were handled by Luther Vandross, who also sings on the album along with Patti Austin! The set's got a great soulful feel – with some wonderful mellow groovers that have a sweet 70s sound – titles that include "Lovely Lady", "Night Flight", "Slick Stuff", "What A Miracle Can Do", "I Love Wastin Time With You", "Keep It Steady", "Grease Piece", and "Dig A Little Deeper". A classy disco project arranged and produced by Willie Henderson – done in a mode that's got less of the jazz funk touches of some of his other late 70s work, and with an approach that's got a fairly straightforward clubby sound. Lead vocals on the set are by Patti Williams – a singer with surprising depth for such a no-name set – and on the best cuts, it's her vocals that actually hold the whole thing together. Polydor, 1969. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A rare lost treasure from James Brown – the full, unedited version of a live concert that was cut up and butchered for the Sex Machine album – presented here for the first time ever, with a huge amount of never-issued tunes! Sex Machine was one of those "fake" concert albums from James – some original live recordings, other studio tracks tricked out – and put together in a way that never really made much sense. This set is something completely different altogether – a James Brown concert from start to finish, complete with some wickedly sharp patter from the stage – and long tunes that really show his group hitting on all burners! The lineup of musicians include three drummers at once – Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Stars, and Melvin Parker – alongside Fred Wesley on trombone, Maceo Parker on alto, Jimmy Nolen on guitar, and Charles Sherrell on bass. James himself plays a bit of organ at instrumental moments – and tracks include the never-released "Lowdown Popcorn", "World", "Spinning Wheel", "Try Me", "I Got The Feelin/Lickin Stick Lickin Stick", and "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose" – next to versions of "There Was A Time", "Say It Loud", "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing", "Mother Popcorn", and "I Can't Stand Myself". Posi tone, 2016. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A killer guitar and Hammond session with a really sublime sort of sound – a groove that's wonderfully free of cliche – and which has an open, spacious quality that few artists can match! Given the instrumentation, the album's steeped in tradition, but never tries to just rehash an older Prestige Records vibe – and instead guitarist Ed Cherry and organist Kyle Koehler find a way of soaring out in their own spirits – opening up strongly in a bass-less trio that only features the drums of Anwar Marshall to keep things snapping along. The pairing is perfect – on the level of Grant Green with Larry Young, or Pat Martino with Don Patterson – yet very much with its own spirit, too. Cherry's arrangements are great, too – providing very fresh takes on familiar tunes, alongside his own compositions. Tremendous girl group work from the New Zealand scene of the 60s – served up by a duo who've got a very special take on the music! The Chicks are sisters, and work together in a mode that's very hand in glove – singing the lyrics together on this host of groovy tunes, but with a style that's a bit more down to earth than some of the harmonies of other groups of this nature – almost like the girls are so excited and happy with the tunes, they're exclaiming together – instead of trying to craft some more complex patterns with their vocals! Classic work from the legendary P&P Records label – created by one of the "P" talents who gave them their name – studio genius Patrick Adams, who mostly works here on his own under the name of Cloud One! Adams already had great success working with east coast soul groups in the first half of the 70s – and as Cloud One, he really finds his way around the more cutting-edge styles of the time – mixing bits of funk with bits of disco, and often adding in these cool electronic elements that really helped define the P&P sound! Many cuts have cool moogy keyboards, and some spacey elements along the edges – done with a lot more soul than some of the Euro space disco recordings of the same time – with much more of a tie to the New York underground that was Adams' main milieu. Titles include the classics "Spaced Out" and "Atmosphere Strut" – plus "Jump Jump Jump", "Stomp Your Feet & Dance", "Disco Juice", "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By", "Patty Duke", "Happy Music", "Doin It All Night", and "Flyin High". Vanguard/Culture Factory, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... On June 12, 2021
One of the most stripped-down records from the early years of Larry Coryell – but one of the most powerful, too – as the record sometimes has Larry singing along with his guitar, in an effortless blend of trippy rock and jazz! The date's a live one – and the trio features Marvin Bronson on bass and Harry Wilkison on drums – both players who are super-tight, and move through lots of amazing rhythm patterns on the longer tracks on the set – which maybe demonstrate the growing power of the young guitarist more than his studio work of the time. Given the structure of the group, and the very expressive work on electric guitar, the whole thing's almost got a Hendrix-into-jazz sort of vibe – although Larry "sings" mostly with his guitar instead of his voice. Titles include "The Opening", "Can You Follow", "Beyond These Chilling Winds", "Entaredecendo En Saudade", and "After Later". (Note: This item is not for sale online until noon on Saturday, June 12. A stunning collection of work from Kiki Dee – a British singer that most folks only discovered in the US in the mid 70s, thanks to a duet with Elton John – but one who gave her homeland some fantastic music in the 60s! The set's the first to fully dip into this part of Kiki's career, and bring all the best bits together – early singles and an album for the Fontana label, plus European material too – then her full album for Motown from the end of the 60s, plus nine more bonus tracks recorded for Motown too! The whole thing's a massive book-styled package – with loads of notes and photos – and the music shows just what a groovy singer Kiki was back in the day – the kind of powerhouse female vocalist that England always seemed to do better than us at the time. The first three albums from Down To The Bone – packaged here in a nicely-priced set, with bonus tracks too! First up is From Manhattan To Staten – a record that moves across the boroughs of New York – and which also managed to have a huge impact on the Windy City as well – given that the music of Down To The Bone was perfect for the groove of the Chicago steppers scene in the 90s! The group are a bit jazz, a bit soul, and have this chunky funky rhythm at the bottom that shows their roots in the British scene – maybe a mix of electric jazz modes with inspirations from artists like Soul II Soul or the James Taylor Quartet – taken to a style that's slightly tighter overall. There's a fair bit of programming in the rhythms, mixed with live instrumentation from group members – and titles include the classic "Staten Island Groove", plus "Muesli Brown", "Savour The Flavour", "Brooklyn Heights", "3 Days In Manhattan", "Carlito's Way", "On The Corner Of Darcy Street", and "17 Mile Drive". Urban Grooves is the second album from Down To The Bone – and a set that really continues the vibe of their debut – a mix of programmed funky rhythms and liver jazz instrumentation – all awash in a groove that really helped them cross over big on both sides of the Atlantic! The production is tight, but looser than smooth jazz of the time – and the record's got more than a few strong keyboard and saxophone solos to offset its rhythmic patterns, which often draw heavily from the best styles of the British soul scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Titles include "A Little Touch Of Soul", "Phat City Hustler", "Joy Is A Good Groove", "Bump N Hustle", "To The Bone", "The Zodiac", and "Urban Jazz". Spread The Word is the overlooked third album from Down To The Bone – a set that maybe didn't take the world by storm as much as their first two, but which still has the group very much in fine formation! All the best previous elements are in place here – that strong mix of funky jazz instrumentation with contemporary rhythmic production – almost a blend of some of the funkier club styles of the time with more mainstream fusion, at a level that made these guys both a hit on the dancefloors and for kicking back at the crib! Titles include "The Backburner", "Righteous Reeds", "Sound As A Pound", "Bridgeport Boogie", "The Lowdown", and "Black Choice". 3CD set features all albums in small LP-style jackets – and bonus tracks include "Deja Vu", "Concrete Jungle", "Staten Island Groove (live studio version)", and "Brooklyn Heights (live studio version)". Jukka Eskola Soul TrioSteamy ... LP
Timmion (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99
An excellent group, and one with a really great concept – a fresh take on a format that was big in the 60s soul jazz scene, but spun out in a very unique way – both in terms of instrumentation, and in terms of the groove! Trumpeter Jukka Eskola heads the trio, which also features Hammond from Mikko Heleva and drums from Toppo Makynen – a mode that was more famously used in tenor/organ combos, like the match of Don Patterson and Sonny Stitt on Prestige Records – but which has never been found in this format before! The trumpet turns out to be a great sound in the frontline, and is given some changed-up rhythms here to work with – not straight soul jazz or funk, and instead a mixture of complicated elements that move the tunes throughout a great range of grooves and colors – really showing all the wonderful sounds that Jukka's been capable of giving us over the years. Titles include "Stick Of A Branch", "Jongo Street", "Tiny B", "Old Stories", "Smash", "Five On Three", and "Steamy". LP, Vinyl record album

Peter EvansBeing & Becoming ... LP
Peter Evans, 2020. New Copy ... $26.99 30.00
A nicely spacious quartet date from trumpeter Peter Evans – one that lets the leader's horn get plenty of room to roam around in the open space of improvisation – but which also features some great contributions from Nick Jozwiak on bass, Savannah Harris on drums, and Joel Ross on vibes – the last of whom is very nice, and a lot more outside and experimental than on some of his other recordings! Evans is often very careful in the way he picks his notes out of the air – blowing both conventional and piccolo trumpet – and often hanging around some favorite patterns for a bit, before stepping out more – balanced nicely by the less-rhythmic work of Ross on vibes, who also chooses some darker, more chromatic elements to offset the horn. Titles include "Wormhole", "Sphere", "Double Drone", "Point Of Return", and "Matrix". LP, Vinyl record album

Peven EverettHome Cookin – An Acoustic Album ... CD
Studio Confession, 2010. New Copy ... $11.99 13.99
Peven Everett, acoustic – a whole new sound for this amazing 21st Century soul singer! We've always loved Peven's music, but usually it's drenched in keyboards and drum patterns – so an acoustic setting like this is a wonderful change – and more proof that Peven's got more than enough going on to handle just about anything he wants to get into! There's heavy use of acoustic guitar in the music, but not in folksy ways at all – almost more jazzy, with some bossa undercurrents – tripping lightly under Everett's vocals, which have all the seductively soulful feel they've ever had, but also hit a more personal – almost Bill Withers-esque quality – in this new setting. If you've never heard Peven before – or even if you have – this may be the record to make you fall in love with his music. Titles include "Stuck", "One More Time", "Testin Me", "Everyday Girl", "Clementine", and "Girl Of My Dreams". CD

ExcitersSoul Motion – The Complete Bang, Shout, & RCA Recordings 1966 to 1969 ... CD
Bang/Shout/RCA/Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Incredible work by The Exciters – material we totally love to death, most of which is a lot harder-hitting than the group's earlier hits in the 60s! The package pulls together their post-UA recordings for the Bang, Shout, and RCA labels – the first to of which are represented by singles, the last by a full LP and some great extra material from 45s – all of which is really incredible stuff that moves way past any pop soul expectations you may have! Production is by Bert Berns on the non-RCA material, and Larry Banks on the RCA sides – and both producers bring an incredibly hip sound to the recordings, mixing the unique deep soul lead of Brenda Reid with some very groovy backings – arranged by Artie Butler, George Patterson, and Teacho Wiltshire, all of whom bring something unique to the mix. The force of these sides is amazing – almost a revolution in female soul, captured in the history of one group – and the booklet features very full notes on the girls, culled from interviews, and telling the story of their legendary years in the 60s. CD contains all of the legendary Caviar & Chitlins LP, plus lots of singles – 21 tracks that include "Take One Step I'll Take Two", "Soul Motion", "Number One", "A Little Bit Of Soap", "Number One", "You Don't Know What You're Missing", "Blowing Up My Mind", "Movin Too Slow", "Turn Me On", "A Year Ago", "You Got Me", "Always", "Fight That Feelin", "Give It All", and "Weddings Make Me Cry". 5th Dimension5th Dimension Live! ... LP
Bell, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
A groovy little live album from The 5th Dimension – not nearly as smoothly polished as their studio albums, in a way that really makes the set stand out nicely! The vocals are still completely top-shelf – a heavenly sound that's hard to believe comes from five mere mortals – but the musical backings are a bit more rough-edged and soul-based – a harder groove than the group gets on their full albums, in a way that provides a great contrast to the harmonies on the lyrics! There's also a great sense of "liveness" to the set – patter from the group before the tunes, and some upbeat medleys of some of their bigger hits – strung together in ways that are a lot nicer than just simple live remakes of familiar songs. Titles include "I Just Want To Be Your Friend", "Eli's Coming", "Never My Love", "Shake Your Tambourine", "Ode To Billie Joe", "I Want To Take You Higher", and two longer medleys of hits! Sublime minimalist experiments from Pascal Comelade – music that's kind of a more offbeat, low-fi take on the territory of Terry Riley – as Comelade performs these beautiful long lines on both piano and organ! Pascal is working here on one track with guitar from Richard Pinhas, another with trumpet from Philippe Beseme and drums from Ben Soussan, and another with guitar from G Ibanez and bass from JP Barreda – all instrumentalists used in different ways, in different shifting patterns of sound – on titles that include "A Few Reasons To Stay A Few Reasons To Split", "Schizo", and "Barcelona Tango". Von FreemanVonski Speaks – Jazzfest Berlin 2002 ... CD
Nessa, 2002. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
One of the most compelling Von Freeman recordings we've ever heard – and one of the few to actually capture the real performance presence of the legendary Chicago tenorist! The date was recorded in Berlin, but it's got a homegrown feel that takes us right back to Von's famous Tuesday night gig at the New Apartment lounge – with lots of long, creative blowing, and some compelling patter between a few tracks, really showing Freeman's ability to win over a crowd. But even without the patter, the tenor work is enough – beautifully sharp and clear, with a rich combination of tenor modes that stretches back to the 50s scene from which Von rose, though later generations of Windy City giants – kind of a tangle of John Gilmore, Clifford Jordan, Gene Ammons, and Johnny Griffin all wound up beautifully together – but at a level that shows that Freeman should have easily topped that legacy too. Players include Mike Allemana on guitar, Jack Zara on bass, and Michael Raynor on drums – and titles include "Vonski Speaks", "Summertime", "Darn That Dream", and "Blues For Sunnyland". CD

Don FriedmanDreams & Explorations ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1964. Used ... $19.99
Easily one of the most modern recordings made by pianist Don Friedman in his early years – a set of forward-thinking numbers done with a quartet that includes guitar Atilla Zoller! As with Zoller's own work from the time, there's a freewheeling approach here that slides effortlessly between melody and rhythm – in a way that often has the guitar and piano flying freely, while the bass from Dick Kniss and drums from Dick Berk take off into sound patterns and tunes of their own. The approach isn't totally out, nor totally free – but it's certainly more so than the usual album on Riverside from the time! Titles include "Israel", "Episodes", "Exploration", "Blizzard", and "Park Row". CD

Schema (Italy), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 23.99
The cover image is a bit different than the modernist images usually used for records by Italian maestro Gerardo Frisina, and the sound is a bit different too – maybe less Latin or Brazilian than some of his previous records, but still filled with lots of percussion at the core! There's plenty of live drums and percussion next to the rhythm patterns created by Gerardo – and the percussion is especially strong throughout, really grounding the tunes nicely, often with strong conga work – amidst other instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, trumpet, and Fender Rhodes! The album has some slight use of kora, which is great – and the whole thing is another groovy feather in the mighty cap of a musician who's been giving us great records for many years. Titles include "Nahi's Son", "Damay", "Desencanto", "Kerewan", "Que Dilema", "Vicky", "Nahi", "Cuiaba", and "Foresta Esotica". CD features the bonus track "Mwanga". CD

A later live date from Benny Goodman – one recorded in Stockholm with a bit of the Phase 4 sound – an approach that makes for some wonderful clarity on his clarinet, really standout out in front of the group on most of the numbers! The recording features a bit of patter in between the numbers – and mostly, the tracks are older tunes played here in an effort to update the Goodman groove. One of Grant Green's mellowest albums – a haunting set of intimate ballads and blues, played with a quintet that includes John Patton on organ, Joe Henderson on tenor, and Johnny Coles on trumpet. Henderson and Coles give the album a very different feel than the usual Grant Green soul bop session – and Green proves himself to be a sensitive soloist more than capable of opening up new moods and colors of old standards like "For All We Know", "Am I Blue", and "I Wanna Be Loved". Johnny GriffinLady Heavy Bottom's Waltz ... CD
Rearward/Schema (Italy), 1968. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the rarest Johnny Griffin albums ever – a set recorded as a side project when Griff was working with the Clarke Boland Big Band – in a lineup that features some of the best members from that great ensemble! The style's a bit more laidback and soulful than other CBBB projects – more in the mode of Johnny's roots in Chicago during the 50s, but still inflected with some of the sharper touches he picked up during his 60s years in Europe. Other players here are all wonderful – and include Benny Bailey on trumpet, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax, Ake Persson on trombone, Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and both Kenny Clarke and Kenny Clare on drums – seemingly playing together on some tracks, which creates a nicely skittish rhythm in the set! Titles include "The Turk's Bolero", "Deep Eight", "A Handful Of Soul", "Foot Patting", and "Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz". CD

Vince GuaraldiComplete Warner Brothers/Seven Arts Recordings (Oh Good Grief/Eclectic/Alma-Ville/bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Omnivore, 1968/1969. New Copy 2 CDs ... $24.99 25.98
A trio of wonderful records – plus rare bonus tracks too! First up is the classic Oh Good Grief – one of the coolest, grooviest albums that pianist Vince Guaraldi ever recorded – a set that's got the same Peanuts theme as his earlier dates for Fantasy Records, but which also features some sweet electric touches that only make things even better than before! In addition to his warmly vamping piano, with all those lyrical touches we love so much, Vince is playing an electric harpsichord too – which makes for some very groovy moments – in a cool quartet that features guitar from Eddie Duran, bass from Stanley Gilbert, and drums from the great Carl Burnett! All tunes are Peanut-themed – the music that Guaraldi wrote for the TV specials – but they're sometimes taken at a looser style that's even jazzier overall – as you'll hear on the classic "Linus & Lucy", plus "Red Baron", "Peppermint Patty", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", and "Rain Rain Go Away". The Eclectic Vince Guaraldi nicely expands Vince's sound of earlier years – by taking his lyrical piano groove and adding in a bit of electric harpsichord – plus slightly larger arrangements that feature a bit of electric bass, guitar, and just the right light touches of strings. The resulting sound is wonderful – as deeply reflective as some of Vince's better-known work, but with some cool late 60s touches that really give the album a fresh kind of feel. And heck, Vince even sings on 2 Tim Hardin tracks – "Black Sheep Boy" and "Reason To Believe" – using a great raspy style of vocals that we didn't even know he had! Other titles include a great electric version of "The Beat Goes On", plus cool originals "Nobody Else", "Coffee and Doe-Nuts", and "Lucifer's Lady". Alma-Ville was cut during Vince's late 60s hipster phase – and it combines work on piano with a bit of electric playing, plus hip LA arrangements that include drums by Dom Um Romao, guitar by Herb Ellis, and added percussion by Rubens Bassini. Tracks are mostly originals – short groovers and sing-song numbers, a lot cooler than some of Vince's earlier work – all dancing along in a sweetly breezy groove that makes for a heck of a delightful little album! Titles include "Rio From The Air", "Cristo Redentor", "Uno Y Uno", "Detained In San Ysidro", "Jambos", "Alma Ville", and "The Masked Marvel". 2CD set features 4 bonus tracks – "Oh Happy Day", "The Sharecropper's Daughter", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose (take 15)", and 'The BEat Goes On (alt take 14)". Fantasy/Craft, 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $18.99 21.99
Some of the grooviest tunes from the Peanuts cartoons – key character themes penned and played by the legendary Vince Guaraldi, in a set of recordings that features both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes! A few cuts get really funky, too – the electric numbers, which remind us that back when we were wee ones, watching these cartoons, Guaraldi was already shaping our consciousness with his great way with a groove. The package is one that really gets right to the heart of Guaraldi's genius – and shakes free of some of the holiday spirit of other Peanuts jazz packages, to get into some incredibly groovy numbers that include "Peppermint Patty", "Joe Cool", "Charlie's Blues (variation)", "Blue Charlie Brown (version 2)", "Frieda (alternate)", "Little Birdie", and "Schroeder (alternate)" – plus the famous "Linus & Lucy". Rufus HarleyPied Piper Of Jazz ... CD
Atlantic/Label M, Late 60s. Used ... $3.99
Fantastic work from one of the most unique talents in jazz! Rufus Harley plays bagpipes – yes, that's right, bagpipes – in a modal Coltrane-esque way that's simply got to be heard to be believed. He uses the drone capability of the instrument to explore reed patterns in the same way that Coltrane did, inspired a bit by Eastern sounds, especially Indian music, but also working in an Afro-centric mode that reclaims the bagpipes as an instrument rooted in the middle east (where it was first picked up by soldiers during the crusades, and brought north to Scotland.) The whole thing might sound incredibly silly, but when you hear the music, you'll be convinced – and this CD is set up to do just that. The collection takes 9 tracks from Rufus glory days at Atlantic Records during the late 60s – and features Harley not only on bagpipes, but on tenor, soprano, and flute – playing in groups that feature players like Roy Ayers, Herbie Mann, Sonny Stitt, James Glenn, and Don Patterson. Titles include "Feelin Good", "Flute Bag", "Taurus The 20th", "More", "Sufur", and "Pipin The Blues". CD

The rest of the other young group features guitar, saxes, and drums – and the album's a no-nonsense groover that jams with the intensity of a lost 60s album on Prestige! PE Hewitt Jazz EnsembleWinter Winds – The Complete Works 1968 to 1970 (3CD set) ... CD
Now Again, 1968/1969/1970. New Copy 3CD ... $13.99 29.98
Brilliantly soulful jazz from the PE Hewitt Jazz Ensemble – a group with a style that mixes the sunny and the spiritual – a box set featuring the originally self-released trilogy of releases Jawbones (1968), Since Washington (1969), and Winter Winds (1970) in one great package from Now Again! Of the trilogy, each is rare enough that we hadn't seen an original LP as of the time of release of this set, and a Japanese CD release of Winter Winds was our only intro to the soulful ingenuity of jazz composer/arranger/vibraphonist/pianist Hewitt. The LPs were actually only pressed in runs of 100 pieces per (!!!) – so this set compiling them is quite revelatory! His group works at a level that's definitely in line with some of our favorite indie jazz at the time – really pushing the boundaries with a great sense of spirit – stretching out towards new ideas, yet never getting too free or too outside to lose their sense of swing. But at another level, there's a slightly groovy undercurrent, too – one that comes from the wordless vocals on Winter Winds, a style that reminds us a bit of the singing on the Sound Of Feeling record with Oliver Nelson – particularly given the modal grooves on the best numbers, but the strength of the groove overall holds true on all three albums. Rhythms are really in the lead at the strongest points – driven by Phil Hewitt's work on piano and vibes, and topped with alto sax and flugelhorn, too. Players include Dick Zemlin on trumpet & piano, Charley Forsberg on alto, Richard Zemlin on flugelhorn, Rick Hearns & Marty Keller on drums. Jawbones includes "Free", "Don't Judge Your Brother", "Ihadmyheadoverthechickensouppot" and more. Since Washington includes "Alone And Watching", "Sad Sunday", " 3AM" and more. Winter Wind includes "I'm Wondering Why", "Oma Rakas", "The Winter Wind", "Tuija", "Baon Que Bash", "Ill Love Song", and "It's Got Two & That's Alright". The box includes reproductions of the original album art plus liner notes, and a 2009 interview by Eothen Alapatt. CD

Hard-driving live work from Quincy Jones – material recorded during one of the most productive, creative years of his large jazz ensemble!
