Bobby HutchersonPatterns (with bonus track) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $10.99 13.99
A really heady set of tracks from vibist Bobby Hutcherson – a record that has him stepping away from the harder sounds of his early modern years – and moving into the sublime mix of soulful and modal styles that would really grow strongly by the end of the 60s! The album's a treasure through and through – warm, subtle interpretations of the music by a group that features Hutcherson on vibes, James Spaulding on alto and flute, Stanley Cowell on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – all working together in modes that are quite like Hutcherson's music with Harold Land – but slightly looser and freer at points too. The album includes a fantastic version of Cowell's "Effi", which was later recorded by Charles Tolliver a few times, plus other beautiful compositions by Joe Chambers – including "Patterns", "Ankana", "Irina", and "Nocturnal". Also features a bonus alternate of the title track! CD

CBS, 1977. Very Good+ ... $2.99
Patti's first solo album – recorded after splitting with the group Labelle, moving into a more sophisticated Diva soul mode that kept her strong for years to come! The album's pretty great, stepping out into the solo soul realm with terrific footing – and the best tunes have a smoothed out modern approach that's actually quite refreshing – and a bit better than some of the work by Labelle in the late years! 9 tracks in all, including "Dan Swit Me", "You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover", "I Think About You" and "Do I Stand A Chance". Rod Levitt OrchestraDynamic Sound Patterns Of The Rod Levitt Orchestra ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1964. Used ... $6.99
"Dynamic" is right – as Rod's one of the hippest large group arrangers of his time! The album's a really wonderful record that features Rod leading an octet with a distinctly modern touch – almost building off the styles of Kenton groups of the 50s, but with more of the energetic twists and turns of some of the west coast groups of later years. Players are mostly lesser-known names – save for trumpeter Rolf Ericson – and the album features some really great tenor work by George Marge, who we only know from this record. Tracks are angular and fresh, but always nicely swinging – and titles include "Holler", "Jelly Man", "El General", "Upper Bay", and "Ah! Spain" – all by Levitt! CD

Albert D PattersonBeats To The Rhyme – A Collection Of Instrumental Hip Hop Records For The Beat Connoisseur (hardcover – with bonus CD) ... Book
Gingko Press, 2013. New Copy ... $6.99 24.95
Think you know hip hop records? Think again – because if you only know the commercially released and vocal versions of the material, then you only know half the story – because among true collectors, the instrumental wax can be even more in-demand! This book opens up that secret world of hip hop – by detailing rare instrumental versions of hip hop albums – some issued only as promotional items, some only as record club or online releases, and some as dodgy bootlegs from the underground! The book has page after page of these releases – with label scans of the original records, alongside other release information, and a very well-done review for each item – a brilliant book that will really open you up to a greater range of hip hop vinyl to collect. There's listings for about 200 different instrumental records, plus more images and other details in the book – and the whole thing even features a bonus CD of instrumental mixes! Book

Bobby PattersonIt's Just A Matter Of Time ... LP
Paula/Wax Trader (Canada), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 19.99
One of the best soul records to come out on the Paula label in the early 70s – one with a number of beautifully soulful moments – and a few surprisingly funky ones, too! Although Bobby Patterson did a lot of work for other singers, this is one of the few albums he actually cut under his own name – and it's a lasting testament to his talents as both a singer and writer. It's got a nice mix of southern soul ballads and more uptempo tracks, and loads of original compositions by Bobby! Includes "This Whole Funky World is a Ghetto", "If You Took A Survey", How Do You Spell Love", "Make Sure You Can Handle It", "I Just Loved You Because I Wanted To", "Right On Jody", "Quiet! John PattonAlong Came John (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1963. Used ... $34.99
A really unusual album from the mighty Hammond giant John Patton – as the set features two tenor players in the group, both of them great! The tenor's no stranger to the sublime keyboard work of Patton – but here, the great one gets help from both Fred Jackson and Harold Vick – both of whom are at their early 60s soul jazz best, able to play with a hard edge, but also some surprisingly complicated moments too – which really fits into the spirit of Patton's overall groove! The group also features great guitar from Grant Green – one of his key pairings with the organist – plus drums from the wonderful Ben Dixon, who's got a fluid, open approach to rhythm that really works well with John's basslines from the Hammond. Titles include "Gee Gee", "Pig Foots", "Spiffy Diffy", "Along Came John", and the classic modal groover "The Silver Meter". CD

John PattonBoogaloo ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1968. Used ... $24.99
Rare work by Hammond organ giant Big John Patton – recorded in 1968, but never issued until 1995, and even then, only briefly! The record features Patton at his finest – stretching out from his basic soul jazz roots, into a more searching use of the organ that's undoubtedly influenced by Larry Young's work at the same time. The record features great work by Harold Alexander on flute and tenor, plus trumpet by Vincent McEwan, drums by George Brown, and added conga by Richard Landrum. The groove is somewhere between 60s soul jazz and modal – and the tracks are long, with that heavy Patton swing! Title sinclude "B&J", "Boogaloo Boogie", "Milk & Honey", "Shoutin But No Poutin", and "Spirit". CD

John PattonLet 'Em Roll ... CD
Blue Note, 1965. Used ... $9.99
A wonderfully wicked meeting of the minds – and a legendary bit of soul jazz from organist Big John Patton! The core of the record features the usual Patton groove – with John on Hammond, Grant Green on guitar, and Otis Finch on drums – but added to that mix is Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, making a rare appearance on an organ jazz session, with some wonderful results! The combination of vibes and organ is especially haunting – jangling a groove with a really modal feel, and creating a sound that instantly made this one stand out from the pack! The whole thing's great, and tracks include "The Turnaround", "Let Em Roll", "Latona", and "One Step Ahead". CD

John PattonMemphis To New York Spirit ... CD
Blue Note, 1970. Used ... $19.99
A great lost album by John Patton – recorded in 1970, but not ever issued until 1995! The record was most likely held back because it's one of the funky organist's most far-reaching – a stunning batch of modal tracks that moves way past the usual organ sound, and much more into Larry Young-ish territory. A young James Blood Ulmer is on guitar, and the great (and underrecorded) Marvin Cabell plays flute, soprano, and tenor sax. Really great stuff – and most likely material that will disappear again for another 25 years! Titles include "The Mandingo", "Bloodyun", "Memphis", "Steno", and a cover of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints". CD

Blue Note (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99 About May 22, 2024
Oh Baby is right – as the album's one of the best Blue Note albums by Hammond legend Big John Patton – a perfect mix of funky organ and burning hardbop! The tracks hare are all originals penned for the album – mostly by Patton, but also by other group members – the kind of fresh grooves that made John's organ work for Blue Note really stand out from the rest of the 60s Hammond generation – very creative stuff, with occasional modern touches, and a rhythmic conception that's not only unusual, but which also really lets the soloists stretch out on their grooves! Players include Harold Vick on tenor, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Ben Dixon on drums, and Grant Green on guitar – and the album's about as sharp as you can get for a Blue Note organ session. Titles include "Fat Judy", "Each Time", "One To Twelve", and "Night Flight". CD

✨✧ John PattonWay I Feel ... LP
Blue Note, 1964. Near Mint- ... $49.99
A record that's every bit as cool as its cover – and one of the strongest Blue Note sessions from Hammond organ legend Big John Patton! The tracks are long, and have a great loping rhythm – a groove that Patton creates by using the bass pedals alongside the drums of Ben Dixon – a player who really helps John break past more familiar Hammond modes – and helps establish that unique sound that really made the organist one of the strongest 60s players on his instrument! The rest of the combo is fantastic too – with Fred Jackson on tenor, Grant Green on guitar, Richard Williams on trumpet – the last of whom is a real surprise, if you only know his work with Charles Mingus. The tracks are nice and long, and have a good balance between soulful roots and more modern intentions – on titles that include "Just 3/4", "The Way I Feel", "Jerry", "The Rock", and "Davene". Savoy/Nippon (Japan), 1956. Used ... $14.99
A warmly crafted set that features Cecil Payne at the height of his powers on baritone sax – blowing with a sense of soul and timing that's right up there with some of the hipper tenor players of his generation! Payne's sound on the instrument is amazingly precise and wonderfully fluid – blown beautifully in two different settings for the album – one in a quartet with Duke Jordan on piano, Tommy Potter on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – the other in the same group, but with Kenny Dorham added in on trumpet! Dorham's tones further emphasize the sweeter sound of Cecil on his chosen instrument – and titles on the set include "Arnetta", "Chessman's Delight", "Bringing Up Father", "Groovin High", "Saucer Eyes", and "Man Of Moods". One of the coolest records ever from the legendary De Wolfe sound library in the UK – a set that's great not only for the work of Brit maestro Roger Webb, but also for the vocals delivered by Barbara Moore – a legendary session singer with a hell of a jazzy touch! Webb's charts are always full of life and color, and showcase his own roots in jazz – served up here with all sorts of fast-stepping rhythms that really let the vocals of Moore take off in wonderful ways – always without lyrics, as Barbara has this way of singing wordlessly that makes her voice act like another instrument next to the horns and keyboards in the arrangements. Wonderful throughout – with titles that include "Dreamy", "Play Girl", "Autumn Aria", "Up West", "Think Twice", "Flipper", "Sandy", "Gentle Soul", and "Sounds Easy". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousPatterns On The Window – The British Progressive Pop Sounds Of 1974 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1974. New Copy 3CD ... $27.99 38.99
Great work from a pivotal year in modern music – a time when some of the experiments of the early prog generation were working their way into shorter, catchier work – not entirely the kind of pop that American audiences were digging on the radio in 1974, but instead some forward-thinking music that would set the tone for years to come! There's a smartness and sophistication to most of these tracks, but also a down to earth quality that makes them easy go get into too – music that came out right before the punk and disco years, but which has gone on to provide endless appeal to listeners in much later generations too. As with Grapefruit sets, the track list is superb – with a great blend of familiar and lesser-known acts, all supported with detailed notes that really help you get into the music. 67 tracks in all – a few unreleased – with music from Ron Wood, Georgie Fame, Hello, Fancy, Unicorn, Bryan Ferry, Sparks, Status Quo, John Cale, Tramp, Snafu, Bebop Deluxe, Roxy Music, Man, Fox, Holy Mackerel, Carmen, Stackridge, Farm, Dave Cousins, Slade, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Billy Kinsley, and many others! Havana Candy, indeed – as singer Patti Austin's in her sweetest mode of the 70s – stepping off of years of background vocals for others, and really emerging as a great soul star on her own! Patti got the chance to cut some soul singles back in her early days – but work like this really unlocks her jazzier side, too – that spirit she developed in her work with Quincy Jones, taken to even more expressive heights on her own. Arrangements are by Larry Rosen and Dave Grusin – moody, mellow in a style that's perfect for Patti's voice – and players on the set include Grusin on keyboards, Eric Gale on guitar, Richard Tee on keyboards, and Ralph MacDonald on percussion – all-star CTI players who really keep things rights! One of the last John Patton albums for Blue Note, and one of the best! A young James "Blood" Ulmer's on guitar, and Marvin Cabell (who we only know from Patton LPs) is on tenor and flute. The sound is deep and soulful, and despite the "accent on the blues" of the title, the feel's more Blue Note soul than it actually is bluesy. Ulmer's guitar is great, with this raspy edge that gives a nice depth to the album – and titles include reat versions of Harold Mabern's "Rakin' & Scrapin" and Eddie Harris' "Freedom Jazz Dance", plus some excellent originals by Cabell like "Captain Nasty" and "Village Lee". Plus, this CD reissue also features 4 other tracks, 3 of which are unreleased titles like "Sweet Pea", "2 J", and "Buddy Boy". CD

A real classic from the great Patti Labelle – one of the lady's first few albums as a solo act, and a set that definitely marks her step forward into a whole new sort of sophisticated soul! Some of the funkier, grittier touches of the Labelle years are in place – but Patti's also got this new sort of lead confidence, especially on the album's fuller tracks, ballads, and midtempo steppers. At a time when so many other female singers were stepping right into disco with a style that Labelle helped to invent, Patti finds a whole new way to express herself and stand strong for years to come. Titles include the killer Latin groover "Teach Me Tonight" – plus "Save The Last Dance For Me", "Monkey See Monkey Do", "Little Girls", and "Eyes In The Back Of My Head". LP, Vinyl record album

Incredible stuff – the only full length LP recorded by Gil Melle for Blue Note – after a series of groundbreaking 10" sessions during the early 50s! The album's got a sound that's almost impossible to describe – bringing Melle's modern baritone sax work into play with a lightly rhythmic group that includes Eddie Bert on trombone, Joe Cinderella on guitar, Oscar Pettiford on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums. The use of baritone and trombone next to guitar is especially striking – and even more so when matched by the inventively sprightly rhythms of Pettiford and Thigpen – making for a sound that's sublime and moving, with an otherworldly approach that's beyond description! Tracks include "Nice Question", "Set Break", "Weird Valley", and "Long Ago & Far Away". CD

Epic/Big Pink (South Korea), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Brenda Patterson's a hell of a singer – one who emerged from the Memphis scene of the late 60s, and who clearly draws heavily from the soul and blues legacy of that famous southern city! Yet the music isn't slavish to its influences, either – as with some of the hipper Bay Area talents of the time, Patterson's definitely finding a way to craft her own groove – one that gets some especially great help here from Redbone, who are the backup group on the record, and who play with even more soulful currents than on their own great records of the time! Tracks include "West Window Song", "I'm Movin' On", "Sun Comes Of", "Who's Going To Come To My Cross", "This Wheel's On Fire", "Red And Blue", "Keep On Keeping On", and "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes". Fantastic longform work from organist Don Patterson – exactly the kind of record that shows why Don's approach was so different than Jimmy Smith or Jimmy McGriff! Patterson works here in a trio – with frequent partner Billy James on drums, and the more surprising Jerry Byrd on guitar – and the tunes really open up and take the right time to find their groove – and open up nicely with solos from Don on the Hammond. Cuts include "Satisfaction", "Walkin", and "Bowl Full of Yok". LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A massive pairing of the tenor of Booker Ervin and Hammond of Don Patterson – a record that's got a very famous cover image, and which marks for one of the greatest meetings of soul and modernism at mid-60s Prestige Records! There's no bass at all on the set – just lots of quick, tight rhythm lines from Patterson on the pedals of the Hammond – mixed with drums from Billy James, and served up with plenty of space for Ervin to open up on tenor – blowing with more soul than on some of his modernist sides of the time! The title cut – "Hip Cake Walk" – is a 16 minute groover, and other tracks include "Rosetta", "Sister Ruth", and "Donald Duck". Very cool cover, too! LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1965. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A great groover from organist Don Patterson – cut in a trio format, with an open-ended style that lets the players kick back and play, in the sort of free and easy setting you'd hear in a hip small club. Patterson's organ is backed by his usual drummer Billy James, and 4 of the album's 5 tracks feature tenor work, either by Booker Ervin or Sonny Stitt. The last track, "Theme For Dee", is a spare mellow ballad that features mostly just organ by Patterson, with some subtle drum fills by James. The other tracks groove a bit harder, and include "Love Me With All Your Heart", "42639", and "Sentimental Journey". LP, Vinyl record album

The most righteous album ever from Kellee Patterson – her first record, and a set that's way different from her more soul-based sides of later years! The album's got Patterson working in a wonderfully soulful approach to jazz – a style that's not unlike the earliest work by Dee Dee Bridgewater, especially her seminal Afro Blue album – and which mixes Kellee's unique vocals with some very hip backings that are right in the best Black Jazz mode! Instrumentation is from a loose jazz combo, and the tunes are a mix of jazzy numbers and a few tighter tracks – a really rich array of sounds that comes together beautifully in the hands of producer Gene Russell. Titles include a stellar version of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage", a great take on the Flip Nunez number "See You Later", and the tracks "Soul Daddy", "Be All Your Own", "Magic Wand Of Love", "You", and "Look At The Child". CD

Players on the records include Richard Williams, Fred Jackson, Grant Green, Harold Vick, Blue Mitchell, Jimmy Ponder, Harold Alexander, and Ben Dixon – and the grooves range from tight and funky, to laidback and soulful, to open-ended and exploratory! Blue Note (Japan), 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
A brilliantly bubbling session from Hammond genius John Patton – and a set that serves as a real link between the gutbucket soul of his early years, and some of the fresher phrasing he was beginning to explore at Blue Note! Patton's lines on the keys are a wonderful thing to behold (and behear!) – as they're both rhythmic, but extremely fluid and exploratory – more conceived around some of the new ideas on tenor at the time, and pushing forward roughly into the same territory as Larry Young – but with more of Patton's rootsy soul still intact. Junior Cook is in the group on most tracks on tenor – sounding quite fresh himself in this context as he leaps around with new energy – and the rest of the group features Jimmy Ponder on guitar and Clifford Jarvis on drums. The cuts are all originals, further proof of Patton's genius through his writing – and titles include "String Bean", "I Want To Go Home", "Dirty Fingers", and "Daddy James". CD

One of the coolest, hippest albums on Blue Note from organist John Patton – a set that really shows the Hammond giant taking on a new sense of direction – especially in his rhythms! The album's one of a few of John's to feature great drums from the massively overlooked Hugh Walker – a player who could really open up a tune, while still letting it swing – creating this sense of space that's really filled up by Patton's broad colors and tones on the keyboard, and by some mindblowing work on tenor sax by the equally overlooked Harold Alexander! The tunes have an open, flowing feel that's almost more in Larry Young territory – yet still retains the soul of Patton's other work too – and titles include "Soul Man", "Chittlings Con Carne", "Ding Dong", and "Congo Chant". Twin-saxophone magic from the team of Sonny Stitt and Booker Ervin – playing together here on some great long tracks that get plenty of support from Don Patterson on the Hammond! ESP, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of 2 ESP sessions by Patty Waters – one of the most groundbreaking vocalists of the 60s, and a singer with a style that mixed equal parts jazz and folk! In a way, Patty's got a sound that's somewhat like Nina Simone at her best – in that she dominates a tune completely, singing as if she's speaking – and infusing it with a raspily personal mode that goes far deeper than simple interpretation. The difference, of course, is that most of Waters' material is all original, so the themes aren't nearly as restrictive as some of the covers that Simone had to re-interpret – but there's certainly a mode here that explores freedoms within limits, and which should have made Waters a much bigger influence in her generation. All material on the set was recorded during a 1966 tour of the state colleges of New York – with backings by Burton Greene on piano, Steve Tintweiss on bass, and Tom Price on percussion – and titles include "Moon Don't Come Up Tonight", "Why Can't I Come To You", "You Thrill Me", "Sad Am I Glad Am I", and "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair". A killer moogy club classic! Cloud One were part of the whole Patrick Adams/Peter Brown cluster of groups who used tight club grooves and spacey production styles to forge a legendary disco sound that's finally getting its due these days. This single, the obscure "Patty Duke", is one of the most compelling chapters in that legacy – as it's a strange bubbly track, with a tight hard groove, and lots of weird little moogy and keyboard bits! A seminal album from the great Patti Labelle – a set that allowed the singer to mature strongly and find her own voice away from the funky, rockish style of Labelle – this sophisticated style that marked a whole new level of the singer's career! The Philly International label turned out to be a perfect setting for Patti – as they too were also growing past some of their earlier styles – moving past the chart soul of the 70s, and some of their bigger disco hits – and finding just the right place to allow their artists to keep on growing strongly over the years. The album's an all-adult affair – no clunky commercial moments at all, and instead this great blend of jazzy currents and sophisticated soul – all handled with the excellent second generation Philly International approach! The style's a bit more laidback and soulful than other CBBB projects – more in the mode of Johnny's roots in Chicago during the 50s, but still inflected with some of the sharper touches he picked up during his 60s years in Europe. Other players here are all wonderful – and include Benny Bailey on trumpet, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax, Ake Persson on trombone, Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and both Kenny Clarke and Kenny Clare on drums – seemingly playing together on some tracks, which creates a nicely skittish rhythm in the set! Titles include "The Turk's Bolero", "Deep Eight", "A Handful Of Soul", "Foot Patting", and "Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Patti Labelle & LabelleLady Marmalade – Best Of Patti & Labelle ... CD
Legacy/Epic, Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
By the time of her big hit "Lady Marmalade" in the mid 70s, Patti Labelle – and group-mates Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash – had been knocking around for many years cutting records. Their style was always interesting – especially as Labelle moved from simple girl group material into some of their more righteous work of the early 70s. By the time they hit the Epic label, though, they emerged as a full-blown hit act – working with Allen Toussaint on some funky material, and watching Patti emerge as a strong solo act on her own. This set features 16 tracks that will give you a pretty good idea of what was going on at the time – including "Lady Marmalade", "You Turn Me On", "Quiet Time", "Messin With My Mind", "It's Alright With Me", "Get You Somebody New", and the great Latiny groover "Teach Me Tonight (Me Gusta Tu Baile)". ✨✧ Charley PattonSpoonful Of Blues ... CD
Paramount/P-Vine (Japan), Late 20s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Legendary Paramount recordings from Charlie Patton – mostly recorded in Richmond, Indiana in 1929 – but easily some of the most important Mississippi blues of the time! The package features a wealth of seminal songs from the June, 1929 session that really helped launch the Patton legacy – tracks that are arguably as important to the development of blues as the work of Robert Johnson, and which quite possibly circulated even more at the time. Patton's got a slightly folksy approach, and a sense of darkness that really makes most of these numbers very riveting, even all these many decades later – an acoustic brilliance that's had folks coming back to his music time and time again over the years.. CD features 20 titles in all – and tracks include "Screamin & Hollerin The Blues", "Pea Vine Blues", "Hammer Blues", "Dry Well Blues", "Poor Me", "Hang It On The Wall", "Down The Dirt Road Blues", "Mississippi Boweavil Blues", and "Tom Rushen Blues". ✨✧ Sonny Stitt & Don PattersonBrothers 4 (Brothers 4/Donny Brook) ... CD
Prestige, 1969/1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two organ/sax cookers back to back – both featuring Don Patterson and Sonny Stitt! First up is the wonderful album Brothers 4 – a mighty pairing of organist Patterson and saxman Stitt – one of Don's grooviest late 60s outings, thanks to an excellent sound from all players involved! Stitt plays Varitone sax on the date, which gives his horn a cool electric feel that really sounds wonderful next to Don's work on Hammond – and Grant Green's also in the group, serving up some great single-line solos that are almost more in his early 60s style than his Blue Note work from this same period. The group's rounded out by Don's regular drummer Billy James – a wonderful player with a great ear for unusual rhythms! Tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Walk On By", "Creepin Home", and "Brothers 4". Donny Brook is a massively funky new groove from organist Don Patterson – done with a sound that's a great link between his early soul jazz years and the funkier Prestige sound to come! The group here is a rock-solid quartet – Sonny Stitt on Varitone tenor, plus a bit of alto sax – as well as Grant Green on guitar and Billy James on drums. The rhythms are great – often with a slight undercurrent of funk in the mix – and Grant lets loose beautifully on his guitar with that soaring, skipping sort of groove he picked up nicely near the end of the 60s. Patterson's Hammond is sgreat as always, and all tracks are nice and long – with plenty of solo room for everyone! Titles include "Mud Turtle", "Good Bait", "St Thomas", "Starry Night", and "Donny Brook". CD

✨✧ Sonny Stitt with Don PattersonNight Crawler ... LP
Prestige, 1965. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A killer set from Sonny – recorded in a very stripped down setting that has him blowing over organ lines by Don Patterson and drums by Billy James, with no other accompaniment! Tunes aren't that long, but they do have a freer feel than usual – and titles include "Answering Service", "Night Crawler", "Star Eyes", and "Who Can I Turn To?". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kellee PattersonKellee (with bonus track) ... CD
Shadybrook/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Kellee Patterson's amazing first album for the Shadybrook label – a total killer all the way through, and much harder and heavier than any of her later sides for the label! The record's got a nice jazzy vibe that's a good bridge between her earlier work on Black Jazz, and her later, straighter soul material – a dose of funk in all the right places, and a touch of spiritual leanings too – really put together with a wonderful feel that sets the album apart from much other work of the time! Includes a sublime breakbeat version of "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby" – with killer drums, and an excellent monologue at the beginning – plus a great cover of Grover Washington's "Mister Magic", with some interesting vocals. Other titles include "Time To Space", "What You Don't Know", and "I Love Music". Gene Russell handled production and arrangements, too – giving the whole thing a nice tie to her album for Black Jazz.
