Patrick CowleyAfternooners ... CD
Dark Entries, Early 80s. New Copy ... $9.99
The continuing lost legacy of Patrick Cowley – the San Francisco 80s club maestro who made some famous records with Sylvester – but who also did a huge amount of underground sounds for porno films at the time! This set digs deep into that legacy – by featuring music that Cowley did for the 1982 film Afternooners, as well as a few other tracks from the time – material that's a great 80s extrapolation of the sorts of slinky funk you'd know from 70s porn! The sounds here are heavy on beats and keyboards – a much more slowed-down take on territory that Cowley explored on his club singles of the period – and the basslines are plenty heavy, and very seductive – as you might imagine, given the images they were used with on the screen. We should tell you that the package does include a few nude images inside – so be warned if you're offended by that sort of thing. Titles include "Love Come Set Me Free", "Big Shot", "Surfside Sex", "Hot Beach", "The Runner", "One Hot Afternoon", "Leather Bound", and "Bore & Stroke". CD

Patrick CowleyMechanical Fantasy Box ... CD
Dark Entries, 1970s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Very early music from the great Patrick Cowley – all unreleased tracks, most of which are from a time before his huge rise to fame on the dancefloor scene! This work all represents early experiments with synthesizers – and while some of the tracks have an upbeat groove that foreshadows Cowley's club tracks in the 12" single years, there's also a wilder, weirder batch of music too – very moody moments that feel either like experimental sound library electronics, or even like some of the hipper German electronic work of the time! As with some of the posthumous releases of material by Arthur Russell, the collection really gets at the overlooked genius that Cowley brought to our world – another talent taken from us all too soon. Titles include "Moving Bodies 1", "Out Of Body", "Right Here Right Now", "Lumberjacks In Heat", "Broken Dishes", "Breakdown", "Before Original Sin", and "Sea Of China". CD
Also available Mechanical Fantasy Box ... LP 18.99

Patrick CowleyMechanical Fantasy Box – The Homoerotic Journal Of Patrick Cowley (softcover) ... Book
Dark Entries, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
A book that's very much what it's promised – the homoerotic journal of dance music and soundtrack composer Patrick Cowley – a key figure on the San Francisco scene before he left this planet in the early 80s! The book is pure sex, and nothing but – save, perhaps, for some essays that frame the work at the start, and about two dozen illustrations by artist Gwenael Rattke – although those are pretty sexy too. Yet the work is a wonderful look into a side of the San Francisco scene in the years before AIDS – penned with the sense of freedom and spontaneity that paint a very different picture of the city than you'll find in mainstream culture. The book offers up chronological accounts of Cowley's sexual encounters – but they're also penned with a sense of poetry in most entries, which prevents them from being pure pornography – more thoughtful erotica, with an increasing level of quality as the years go on – similar to the evolution in Cowley's music. In addition to the black and white images by Rattke, the book also features cards and posters from some of the older bathhouses and gay clubs in San Francisco – making for some nice historical framing of the work. Megatone, 1982. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Spaced out, synth heavy disco and new wave from the producer behind many of Sylvester's most popular tracks. As you might guess from the title, this is an early 80s electro future disco affair, with pulsating grooves, broad washes of synths and percolating rhythm tracks: "Tech-No-Logical World", "Invasion", "They Came At Night", "Mind Warp", "Primitive World", "Mutant Man" and "Goin' Home". Patrick CowleyMuscle Up ... CD
Dark Entries, Late 70s. New Copy ... $9.99
Moody work from the legendary Patrick Cowley – all music originally composed for use in 70s porno films shot on the San Francisco scene – most of it in the years before Cowley took off in more techno-styled dancefloor modes! These tracks are all heavy on electronics, but the grooves are often somewhat gentle – mostly in modes that run from midtempo to spacey, and which clearly featured during the more languid erotic scenes of the movies – maybe moments when the action was heated, but also rapturously intense. And as such, the music has a very different vibe than the familiar funk and jazz you'd know from other porn films of the period (although there is one great funk number here) – and the use of electronics give most of these cuts a cool, spacey vibe – almost like Sky Records material from the German scene, or pre-cold wave electronics. Titles include "Deep Inside You", "5oz Of Funk", "Timelink", "Uhura", "Pigfoot", "Don't Ask", "Cat's Eye", and "Somebody To Love Tonight". CD

VariousFor Discos Only – Indie Dance Music From Fantasy & Vanguard Records – 1976 to 1981 (3CD set) ... CD
Fantasy/Craft, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 35.99
Rare singles from the glory days of the American club music scene – most of which were only issued as promo release – hence the "for discos only" in the title! The package looks at the wealth of material issued by the Fantasy and Vanguard family of labels in the late 70s – imprints that have never fully gotten their due, in comparison to companies like Salsoul or Philadelphia International – even though they made an equally huge contribution to the world of funky grooves! In fact, given that Fantasy owned Prestige and other jazz labels at the time, they also had a longer heritage in soulful music – which often made some of their singles these real mini-masterpieces in sound. Vanguard was equally unusual, but in a different way – as disco and club were relatively new to their catalog – which almost seemed to give them a freedom to be a bit more experimental than some of the bigger companies working the dancefloors. The result is a great collection of really creative, really upbeat material – almost all of which is nice and extended, and presented here on the rare 12" single versions. Titles include "Til You Surrender (special rmx)" by Rainbow Brown, "Rock Creek Park (rmx)" by The Blackbyrds, "No One Can Do It Like You (12" special Shep Pettibone rmx)", "Chill Out (12" version)" by Free Expression, "I Don't Know What's On Your Mind (special 12" mix)" by Spiders Webb, "Over & Over (special 12" disco)" by Sylvester, "Turn The Music Up (12" disco)" by Players Association, "Beat Of The Night (special 12" disco)" by Fever, "Party Vibes (special 12" disco)" by Ike Turner & Home Grown Funk, "You've Got Me Dancing In My Sleep (special remaster)" by Frisky, "Boogie City (special 12" disco mix)" by Phil Hurtt, "Space Bass (special 12" disco)" by Slick, "Mondo Man (12" version)" by Roni Griffith, "It's Music (special 12" disco)" by Damon Harris, "Always There (special 12" disco)" by Side Effect, "For Your Love (special 12" disco)" by Idris Muhammad, "Straight To The Bank (special 12" disco)" by Bill Summers, "Boogie With Me (12" disco)" by Poussez, "Don't Know What To Say" by The Blackbyrds, "I'm The One" by Rainbow Brown, "I Got The Feeling (Patrick Cowley megamix)" by Two Tons O Fun, "Dance (special 12" disco)" by Paradise Express, and "Savage Lover (12" disco long vocal)" by The Ring.
