✨✧ Marvin Hannibal PetersonAngels Of Atlanta ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious works ever by Marvin Hannibal Peterson – a larger work dedicated to the 20 African-American children murdered by a serial killer in Atlanta, performed here with a mix of choral voices and jazz instrumentation! The piece follows strongly in a legacy of that format started by Max Roach and continued by Billy Harper – and Peterson works here with players that include George Adams on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Dierde Murray on cello – plus the voices of The Harlem Boys Choir, and lead vocals by Pat Peterson. The whole thing's wonderful – soaring and spiritual without sounding hokey at all – and titles include "The Angels Of Atlanta", "The Story Teller", "The Inner Voice", "Mothers Land", and "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child". CD
(Part of the "Enja – Real Jazz Classics" series!)

Singers UnlimitedMagic Voices – 7CD Box Set ... CD
MPS/Motor (Germany), Early 70s. Used 7CD ... $99.99
For completists only! We always knew the folks at Motor Music were mad, but never this mad. Yet only beautiful madness could have led them to put out this insanely over-stuffed set of the complete works of one of the spookiest vocal groups of all time. Led by Gene Puerling of the Hi-Los, and recorded by the studio genius of MPS, the Singers Unlimited were a memorable group who managed to bring together jazz, easy listening, pop sounds, and even a bit of TV-jingle technique, in order to form a unique blend of harmony vocals that sounds like nothing else in the planet. Some of the stuff is cheesy, sure, but lots of it will blow your mind if you go in for the vocal group sound (as we do!) This set's got a massive 14 albums on 7 CDs, and it's packaged with a lavish booklet full of information, discographies, and essays on the band. We can't recommend this for everyone, but it's a stunning batch of material. And even though you do see some of their albums cheaply in the used record bins, this set contains a lot of stuff that you can never ever find. And as an additional bonus, the group is backed by folks like Clare Fischer, Art Van Damme, Oscar Peterson, Pat Williams, and others – and they also sing completely a cappella on 3 full albums! Wild. CD
(Out of print. Box has some very light wear, but this is a great copy overall.)

✨✧ VariousTrust The DJ – Patrick Forge PF02 ... CD
Trust The DJ (UK), 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet jazzy funk from the godlike hands of Patrick Forge – one of the biggest influences on the Dusty Groove sound over the past decade, and a DJ that we rank right up there with Gilles Peterson! Patrick's second set of tracks for the Trust The DJ series is even sweeter than the first – a warm mix of soul, jazz, and club styles – the best of the underground, presented non-stop back to back, as you'd hear if you were lucky enough to catch Patrick at one of his famous London gigs. Titles include "Uam Uam" by Povo, "I Am With You" by Hajimi Yoshizawa featuring Chris Franck, "The Dance" by Blaq & Wright, "Betcha (Fireworx rmx)" by Izzi Dunn, "Golden (Bugz In The Attic mix)" by Da Lata, "Berimbal Capoiera (Da Lata rmx)" by Grupo Batuque, "Torch Of Freedom (DJ Patife & Madzoo mix)" by Cleveland Watkiss & Source, and "Felicidad Nova" by John Beltran. Louis Armstrong & Oscar PetersonLouis Armstrong Meets Oscar Peterson ... CD
Verve (Germany), 1957. Used ... $3.99
Gentle-going genius from the later years of Satchmo's career – a session that has Louis on trumpet and vocals, backed by the Oscar Peterson Trio! Peterson's usual group with Herb Ellis and Ray Brown is expanded slightly for this outing – bringing in Louis Bellson on drums to syncopate the tunes a bit more strongly, and give them that gently swinging rhythm that always works well with Armstrong's style. The real surprise, though, is Louis' voice – which is simple, almost elegant at times – and free from some of the gimmicks of other 50s sessions, or the too-playful style of his better-known duets of the period. We really love his gentle, honest approach to the lyrics here – on tunes that include "I'll Never Be The Same", "Moon Song", "What's New", "There's No You", "You Go To My Head", "That Old Feeling", and "Let's Fall In Love". CD also features 4 bonus tracks – including "Let's Do It", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Makin Whoopee". CD

Various80s Jazz Dance ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $7.99
A set with an 80s cover, but one that features vintage soul jazz throughout – the kind of late 50s/early 60s material that really played big on UK club floors in the early years of Acid Jazz, thanks to work by DJs like Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge! These are all classic cuts from the US – from labels like Prestige and Chess – served up with plenty of Hammond, riffing guitar, and strong tenor lines – plus occasional vocals too. Forget the look of the package, and imagine some fantastic jazz photographs instead – alongside cuts that include "Camp Meetin" by Sam Lazar, "Moanin" by Art Blakey, "Screamin" by Jack McDuff, "Cerveza" by Boots Brown, "Somethin Strange" by Baby Face Willette, "Meetin Here" by Curtis Amy & Paul Bryant, "Blue Vibes" by Johnny Lytle, "Wade In The Water" by Johnny Griffin, "Vera" by Richard Evans, "Sack O Woe" by Ray Bryant, and "Night In Tunisia" by Buck Clarke. VariousCraig Charles Trunk Of Funk Vol 1 ... CD
Soul Bank, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A smoking set of funk and soul put together by Craig Charles – once an actor, now a long-running DJ on the BBC – where his ear for a tune has made him almost as important as John Peel and Gilles Peterson! Craig's got a wide-ranging appreciation for all things funky – which comes through here, in a blend of tracks that is both classic and contemporary – rare cuts from the past, and some overlooked gems from the present – but all with a continued love of the elements that make 60s and 70s soul so great! Tracks include "Boogie Down" by Roy Ayers, "Hold My Hand" by Laneous, "Soul A Go Go" by Soul Messin Allstars, "Superfly (Sam Redmore's Trunk Of Funk edit)" by Amp Fiddler, "Medicated Goo" by PP Arnold, "African Rhythms (Trunk Of Funk edit)" by Oneness Of Juju, "Forget Me Nots (7" single mix)" by Patrice Rushen, "Beggin" by Magnus Carlson, "People Get Ready" by James Taylor Quartet, "Give Me The Night" by Juan Laya & Jorge Montiel, "Take A Shot" by The Fantastics, "Clap Hands" by Honeyfeet, "Telling You Lies" by Alex Opal, "The Only Difference" by Beatchild & The Slakedliqs, "Hangin On" by Monophonics, and "Pata Pata" by Miriam Makeba. ✨✧ VariousCuba – Music & Revolution Vol 1 – Culture Clash In Havana – Experiments In Latin Music 1975 to 1985 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A true revolution in Cuban music – not the familiar cha cha and pachanga modes of the pre-Castro years, but instead the huge wave of fresh styles and combinations that sprung up in the years to come! The tracks here aren't the kind of Cuban sounds that are locked in time by the all-star representations of the scene that circle widely – and instead, this music represents the younger, more experimental side of the scene – continually creating new styles and hybrids during the 70s and 80s, even at a time when most of the records weren't making it out to the world at large! Make no mistake, there's certainly elements of older Afro Latin rhythms, and Latin jazz instrumentation – but those are blended with new approaches to rhythm, instrumentation, and the overall role of the musicians and singers – on tracks that will really open up your ears. Gilles Peterson helped put the package together for Soul Jazz – and the whole thing's got the same hybrid hallmarks as his more recent recording forays in Havana – with cuts that include "Cancion Con Todos" by Grupo De Experimentacion Sonora Del Icaic, "Hast Las Cuantas" by Grupo Monumental, "Luna Wanestain" by Emiliano Salvador, "Te Quiero Porque Te Quiero" by Pablo Milanes, "Un Lamento Heco Cancion" by Los Reyes 73, "Dacapo" by Raul Gomez, "La Patica" by Paquito D'Rivera, "Rompe Cocorioco" by Juan Pablo Torres, "Mi Ritmo Caliente" by Juan Formell & Los Van Van, "Chequere Son" by Grupo Irakere, "El Son Del Campeon" by Conjunto Rubavana, and "Con Cadencia Y Con Dulzura" by Las D'Aida. ✨✧ Dayme ArocenaCubafonia ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The deepest work we've heard so far from Dayme Arocena – a Cuban singer we first discovered in Gilles Peterson's Havana Cultura project, but one who's really gone onto find her own strong musical paths in recent years! This set has Dayme working with Dexter Story on production – and the approach is maybe a bit more traditionally Latin than some of her earlier work, yet still infused with the soaring spirit that we love on the Brownswood label – with a vibe that's never too concerned about any sort of easy labels or boundaries, but also still respects a sense of tradition as well! The group's a large one, with lots of older Afro Cuban elements coming into play with Story's more spiritual leanings – and titles include "Negra Caridad", "Maybe Tomorrow", "Eleggua", "La Rumba Me Llamo Yo", "It's Not Gonna Be Forever", and "Mambo Na Ma".
