Gary Burton with Pat MethenyDreams So Real ... LP
ECM, 1976. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Gary Burton takes on the music of Carla Bley – in a wonderfully sensitive set that opens up rich new colors in her music! The group here is a particularly well-chosen one for the effort – a quintet with Burton on vibes, Mick Goodrick on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Bob Moses on drums – plus a young Pat Metheny on guitar, really shading in the tunes with his evocative tones. Burton's vibes are angular one minute, spare and spacious the next – and in a way, his treatment if Bley's tunes is some of the most sensitive we've ever heard. Titles include "Ictus/Syndrome", "Dreams So Real", "Intermission Music", "Doctor", and "Vox Humana". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has a yellowed sticker spot.)

Pat MethenyAmerican Garage ... LP
ECM, 1979. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A brilliantly evocative album from Pat Metheny – one that's got a quietly epic feel, as Pat and group soar out across the American landscape in a set of tunes that subtly explore space and sound while still remaining wonderfully fluid. There's nothing forced here, and nothing too slick – just a magical blend of acoustic and electric sounds, touched with those mystical notes that seem to flow effortlessly from the hands of keyboardist Lyle Mays. Titles include "The Epic", "American Garage", "Cross The Heartland", "Airstream", and "The Search". LP, Vinyl record album

Pat MethenyAs Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls ... CD
ECM, 1981. Used ... $9.99
One of our favorite Metheny moments ever – and one of the few albums of his that we can go back to, and still enjoy heartily! The album's wonderfully stripped down – and features only guitar by Metheny, keyboards by Lyle Mays, and percussion and vocals by Nana Vasconcelos, all blended together with some sublime ECM production by Manfred Eicher, who's really got "the sound" in full effect here, pillowtizing all the instrumentation into wonderful washes of color and tone. The standout track is the 20 minute epic "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls" – and other tunes include "It's For You", "Estupenda Graca", and "Ozark". CD

Pat MethenyFirst Circle ... LP
ECM, 1984. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Arguably the last great album to come from the classic Pat Metheny collaboration with Lyle Mays – a record that's tightened up considerably from some of the group's earlier efforts, but which gives as its reward some wonderfully compelling tunes! Pat's still very much influenced here by a Brazilian fusion style – but he takes that approach, dismantles it, pulls out the best elements – and extrapolates them into a sound that's uniquely his own. Wordless vocals slide out on a few numbers, while guitar and keys sing alongside earthier percussion – in a style that's extremely evocative, and shows that even riding the top of his own success, Metheny was still more than willing to bring in new modes. Titles include "If I Could", "Forward March", "Yolanda, You Learn", "End Of The Game", and "Mas Alla". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pat MethenyOfframp ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1981. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A really wonderful little record from Pat Metheny – quite possibly our favorite by the man, thanks to some really inventive sounds that still resonate strongly in the groove scene today! Pat's skirting nicely here between the sound-based quality of earlier records, and some of the more fluid and Brazilian-influenced song structures that were emerging in his work – using the percussion of Nana Vasconcelos to give the tracks a nice earthy undercurrent, but still also managing to slide around wonderfully in that fluid groove he was building with keyboardist Lyle Mayes. ✨✧ Charlie Haden & Pat MethenyBeyond The Missouri Sky – Short Stories by Charlie Haden & Pat Metheny ... LP
Decca/Verve (France), 1996. Near Mint- 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Missouri has never sounded so beautiful before – and, in some ways, maybe neither have guitarist Pat Metheny and bassist Charlie Haden! The album's a real standout for both musicians during this time in their career – almost a back to basics with the kind of sound that they really put forth in the 70s, especially on ECM – with these subtle, simple, almost painterly progressions that are completely mesmerizing – even though they always understate their presence. Tunes are from a variety of sources – and include great reworkings of "Cinema Paradiso", "Two For The Road", "The Moon Song", "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress", and "Precious Jewel" – plus the originals "Waltz For Ruth", "Our Spanish Love Song", "First Song", "Message To A Friend", and "Tears Of Rain". ✨✧ Pat Metheny80/81 ... LP
ECM, 1980. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most striking Pat Metheny albums of the period – as the set features the guitarist working with an all-star group that actually features 2 horn players! The group's a quintet, with Dewey Redman and Michael Brecker on tenor sax – blowing in open and spacious modes that complement the sound of Metheny's guitar nicely and really give the set a different feel. The rest of the group features Charlie Haden on bass and Jack De Johnette on drums – and the double space of the set is well used on a set of tracks that includes "Two Folk Songs", "The Bat", "Turnaround", "Open", "Pretty Scattered", and "Goin Ahead". ✨✧ Jaco Pastorius/Pat Metheny/Bruce Ditmas/Paul BleyLive In New York City – 16th June 1974 (aka Jaco) ... LP
Improvising Artists Inc/B 13, 1974. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great and hard to find side, with bass whiz Jaco meeting up with Pat Metheny, Bruce Ditmas and Paul Bley. Bley plays electric piano, so his tones match with the electric guitar and bass, and the set bristles with energy, and casts all the players in a different light than the work they became most well known for. Jaco is definitely flexing his chops, but there's still a sense of restraint that lacks a bit in some of his later recordings, and the tunes by Bley, Carla Bley, and Annette Peacock cast both him and Metheny into a freer sounding realm than you typically hear them. 9 tracks in all, though a number of the songs on side two are very short. Includes "Vashkar", "Vampira", "Overtoned", "Batterie" and "Blood". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Steve Reich/Kronos Quartet/Pat MethenyDifferent Trains ... CD
Nonesuch, 1989. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pivotal album from minimalist genius Steve Reich – a record that got him into living rooms across America – thanks to the album's higher concept, and key participation of the Kronos Quartet and guitarist Pat Metheny! Kronos perform on the long title track "Different Trains" – a piece that is both a meditation on train travel and its role in the Holocaust – performed by the quartet with additional sounds from Reich on tape! Metheny's guitar sounds fantastic on "Electric Counterpoint" – a work that's completely faithful to the amazing range of tones and colors he'd been bringing to his own albums for years, but which also reworks things with Reich's minimal modes. ✨✧ Pat MethenyPat Metheny Group ... LP
ECM, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A near-legendary album from Pat Metheny – the real birth of the "Metheny sound" on record, and a perfect example of the magically fluid groove that he crafted with keyboardist Lyle Mays! The sound here is hard to describe – and even harder when you try to pick out the individual keyboard and guitar bits – because the overall feel of the record is so well wrapped up and lyrically together, yet manages to do so without falling into any too-slick styles or cliched approaches to fusion. We're stunned at how much this one still delights us over the years, and the record still stands as a landmark in its field. ✨✧ Pat MethenyTravels ... LP
ECM, 1982. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A live album, but every bit as seminal as the studio sides that Pat Metheny cut for ECM at the time – and proof that the Metheny magic was clearly his own, and not just a product of studio tricks by Manfred Eicher! The set reprises tunes and themes from a variety of Metheny's earlier ECM albums – but the live presentation of the material somehow really transforms a number of them – pushing them into a soundspace that's similar to the one explored by Pat on the Offramp album, augmented especially by the presence of percussionist Nana Vasconcelos in the group. Titles include "Phase Dance", "Farmer's Trust", "Straight On Red", "The Fields The Sky", "Are You Going With Me", "Extradition", "Going Ahead", "As Falls Wichita So Falls Wichita Falls", and "Travels". A seminal record in the formation of the Pat Metheny sound of the 70s – a set that brings his wonderfully chromatic work on guitar into play with the piano of Lyle Mays – all at a level that's so stripped-down and spacious, you can easily hear all the genius as it unfolds! And yet the album's also markedly different from some of the other ECM material at the time – as Pat's really stating himself with some more personal ideas, a bit of warm tunefulness, and maybe just a slight current of sentiment – which is what makes the record so wonderful, and so different than some of his labelmates. The set also features Eberhard Weber on bass and Dan Gottlieb on drums – on titles that include "Lakes", "River Quay", "Watercolors", "Icefire", "Oasis", and "Sea Song". CD

Danny GottliebAquamarine ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1987. Used ... $24.99
A sweet set of solo fusion from drummer Danny Gottlieb – formerly with Pat Metheny's group – and feel that's definitely in character with some of Methany's work from the period. Gottlieb is working here in the company of guitarist John Abercrombie and a number of cuts, and Joe Satriani also plays on the record – which gives it a bit more crossover appeal – something that made it a surprising hit at the time – and other players include Bill Evans on a track, plus Doug Hall, Cafe, Mark Egan, Dave Samuels and others. Titles include "Alaska", "Waterfall", "Aquamarine", "Duet", "Once Upon A Time", and "Peace Of Mind". CD

Roberto OlzerTorre Del Lago ... LP
Sawano/Jazz Shinsekai (Japan), 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 52.99
Really haunting solo work from pianist Roberto Olzer – a player who's already got this incredibly sensitive command of the keyboard on his trio records, which only comes through even more strongly here! Olzer seems trained in the best modes of the romantic composers, especially Chopin – yet he's also a jazz musician too – and blends a sense of improvisation with an impeccable understanding of the piano, with a balance of notes, sounds, and silence that's completely sublime! The set does reference another world in its use of a few compositions by Puccini, mixed with others by Pat Metheny, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Bill Evans – in a set list that includes "We Will Meet Again", "Pezzo In La", "Luiza", "In Her Family", "Straight To Dream", "Torre Del Lago", "Remembering Pramila", and "Coro A Bocca Chiusa". LP, Vinyl record album

Lee RitenourOn The Line (Japanese pressing) ... LP
JVC (Japan), 1982/1983. Near Mint- ... $6.99
On The Line has a style that's a bit keyboard-heavy – in a way that seems to borrow from some of the 80s soundtrack work of the time, and which is clearly a nod to the success of the Lyle Mays/Pat Metheny sound that was breaking big on ECM. The move is a nice one for Lee on the best cuts – those that underplay the cheesier aspects of the style – and other players on the album are a batch of likely suspects that include Harvey Mason, Dave Grusin, Ernie Watts, and Steve Forman. Titles include "The Rit Variations", "Dolphin Dreams", "California Roll", "On The Line", "Tush", and "Heavenly Bodies". LP, Vinyl record album

Thiiird PlaceThis Is Thiiird Place ... LP
Toyokasei (Japan), 2024. New Copy ... $36.99 44.99
An excellent funk group from Japan – one who pick up some of the fuller horns of the Stax Records or Afro Funk generations, mix it with some leaner rhythms at times – and also make a strong nod towards contemporary funk modes as well – but all without sounding like anyone else at all! Part of the strength of the set is the female vocals that come into play on some of the best numbers – putting forth the lyrics in a way that's not nearly as slavish to retro styles as you're used to finding in modern funk groups – a quality that's also echoed by the instrumentation in the group, which can sometimes be as jazzy as it is funky! Titles include "Miles Day Blues", "Ears", "Shoes", "Pass The Soup", and "Welcome To Third Place" – as well as a cover of the Pat Metheny tune "Last Train Home" and Pharoah Sanders' "Healing Song". ✨✧ VariousDjango Unchained ... CD
Universal Republic, 2012. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Life! Liberty! Vengeance! A wild and very cool soundtrack for Tarantino's dual Blacksploitation/Spaghetti Western homage Django Unchained – featuring bits from some of our favorite Italian western composers mixed up with classic and contemporary funky soul and hip hop! It's the kind of soundtrack that could only happen for Quentin Tarantino – with rare and hard-to-find compositions by Luis Bacalov, Ennio Morricone, Riz Ortolani and Jerry Goldsmith on one hand – along with a few seemingly antithetical new compositions on the other – including a track penned by star Jamie Foxx for Rick Ross, a James Brown "Payback" remix with a vocal from the 2Pac archive, plus ones by Anthony Hamilton, John Legend and others! Last but not least, it's got some great bits of film dialogue by Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Leonardo DiCaprio. Titles include "Django" by Luis Bacalov, "The Braying Mule" by Ennio Morricone, "Nicaragua" by Jerry Goldsmith with Pat Metheny, "Day Of Anger" by Riz Ortolani, "Unchained (The Payback/Untouchable)" by James Brown with 2Pac, "Who Did That To You?" by John Legend, "100 Black Coffins" by Rick Ross, "Trinity (Titoli)" by Annibale E I Cantori Moderni and many more. ✨✧ Larry CarltonLarry Carlton Strikes Twice (longbox edition) ... CD
MCA, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
Larry Carlton looks a little cheesy on the cover of this one, but the album's a classic set of mainstream fusion from the start of the 80s – exactly the kind of record that made Carlton one of the standouts of the time! Larry actually sings a bit on the set, but the main focus is on his guitar work – often as sharp-edged as the lightning lines on the cover image – but with a warmer, soulful undercurrent too – one that bubbles along nicely, thanks to keyboards from Greg Mathieson and Don Freeman, and cool percussion from the great Paulinho Da Costa. The best tunes here have that warmly melodic feel you'd find in some of Pat Metheny's work, although with a bit more soul overall – and titles include "Springville", "Strikes Twice", "Ain't Nothin For A Heartache", "For Love Alone", "Mulberry Street", and "In My Blood". CD

✨✧ Charlie HadenNocturne ... CD
Verve, 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
A reall beautiful album from bassist Charlie Haden – one of his larger concept records, but one that's delivered with a nicely stripped-down vibe – in a moody late night spirit that really fits the title and the vintage image of Havana on the cover! At some level, the record's a love letter to the city that's special to Haden – but it also embraces some of the richer Latin currents he explored in other projects – not with a full ensemble, but with subtle touches from Gonzalo Rubalcaba on piano and Ignacio Berroa on percussion in the core trio – augmented at points with tenor from David Sanchez and Joe Lovano, a bit of guitar from Pat Metheny on one track, and violin from Federico Britos Ruiz on a few more. Title sinclude "Transparence", "El Ciego", "Yo Sin Ti", "Noche De Ronda", "En La Orilla Del Mundo", "No Te Empenes Mas", and "Tres Palabras". CD

✨✧ Milton NascimentoEncontros E Despedidas ... CD
Polydor (Germany), 1985. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nicely understated 80s set from Milton Nascimento – a record that still has that heavenly, soaring sensibility in his vocals – but which maybe also has some of the intimacy you might expect from the cover's image of Milton walking alone in a forest! There's some jazzy currents in the music, but just a bit – and the set does include contributions from Pat Metheny and Hubert Laws – but the vibe is very much Nascimento's own, on titles that include "Lagrima Do Sul", "Raca", "Quem Perguntou Por Mim", "A Primeira Estrela", "Encontros E Despedidas", "Mar Do Nosso Amor", and "Vidro E Corte".
