PassportLooking Thru ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1973. Used ... $16.99
A cosmic leap forward for Passport – a record that's even more keyboard-heavy than some of the group's earlier work, and which stretches out in a spacey sound that's very much in keeping with the cover! The keys here are handled by (yet again) another new player in the group – Kristian Schulze on Fender Rhodes and organ, who seems to play with a tone and a ringing clarity that's a great counterpart to Klaus Doldinger's rich tones on tenor and soprano sax – brighter than before somehow, and with a focused groove that only further intensifies the sound the group explored on their first few records. Titles include "Eternal Spiral", "Rockport", "Looking Thru", "Tarantula", "Ready For Takeoff", and "Things To Come". CD

Max Roach & Abbey LincolnSounds As A Roach ... LP
Passport (Italy), 1968. Sealed ... $14.99
An obscure one from Max Roach! The set was recorded live in 1968 in Norway – and it features Max working with Steve Lacy on soprano, Red Mitchell on bass, Steve Kuhn on piano, and Abbey Lincoln on vocals. Abbey sings on a few tracks – and the group jams on others – but a certain percentage of the record features Max playing solo, in that great way he used on the Drums Unlimited album for Atlantic. The whole album's quite varied – but it also shows the range of Roach's creative explorations at this sometime "lost" time in his career. Titles include "Prayer Protest From Freedom Now", "For Big Sid", "Drums Unlimited", "Profit", "Patty Pat and Midnight Variations", and "Prelude". LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie ParkerJazz Perennial – Genius Of Charlie Parker #7 ... LP
Verve, 1949. Very Good+ ... $6.99
One of our favorite of Verve's "genius of" collections of Charlie Parker's work – largely because it includes some wonderful and oft-overlooked vocal tunes! 4 of the tracks on the set feature Bird blowing with a vocal chorus arranged by Dave Lambert – in a style that shouldn't work, but does – thanks to Lambert's keen bop sensibilities (heard here before his Lambert Hendricks & Ross years), and to players in the group that include Hal McKusick, Max Roach, and Charles Mingus. Other tracks have Parker either playing in a quartet with Buddy Rich, Ray Brown, and Hank Jones – or in a different group with Kenny Dorham and Tommy Turk. Titles include "Cardboard", "Visa", "Segment", "Passport", "Diverse", "I'm In the Mood For Love", "If I Love Again", and "Star Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Verve trumpeter logo pressing, with deep groove. Cover has light wear and a split top seam held with aged clear tape.)

Barney Wilen QuartetNewport '59 ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1959. Used ... $22.99
The great French tenor player, caught live at Newport in 1959 with backing by Toshiko Akioshi, Tommy Bryant, and Roy Haynes. The set's as boppish as you'd expect, with versions of Charlie Parker's "Passport", Monk's "Round Midnight", and Wilen's own "Barney's Tune". Added to the CD are some extra recordings made in Europe – including 2 tracks recorded with Bud Powell and Kenny Clarke, and 1 recorded with The Modern Jazz Group of Freiberg. CD
