Joe CastroPassion Flower – For Doris Duke (6CD set) ... CD
Sunnyside, Late 50s/1960s. New Copy 6CD ... $44.99 49.98
A massive tribute to this overlooked west coast pianist of the postwar years – an overstuffed set that features unreleased recordings, rare albums, and lots of other unusual material from the archives of the great Joe Castro! The set follows on the very illuminating Lush Life package from Sunnyside a few years back – and like that box, this one showcases just how many things Joe had going on at the time – even if he only got a chance to issued a rare few records as a leader! CD1 features a series of mid 50s trio recordings done in LA – with work from Paul Chambers, Leroy Vinnegar, and Red Mitchell on bass – plus Philly Joe Jones, Lawrence Marable, and Jimmy Pratt on drums. CD2 isn't Joe at all – but features his own recordings of a very young Paul Bley on piano (1956!), plus singer Flo Handy with backings from pianist George Handy. CD3 returns to the Castro catalog – and offers up the Atlantic album Mood Jazz, with arrangements from Neal Hefti and Ray Ellis – plus six more bonus tracks too. CD4 features another Atlantic album – the great Groove Funk Soul – again with unissued bonus tracks. CD5 features rare trio material, done for Joe's tiny Clover Records imprint – an unusual group with Teddy Kotick on bass and Paul Motian on drums – recorded in New York in 1965. CD6 features even more unusual material from the Clover vaults – a few more with the same trio - plus performances from Teddy Edwards and Bill Holman on tenor, Gabe Balthazar on flute and alto, Al Porcino on trumpet, and Bill Hood on baritone – plus orchestrations, tenor, and oboe from Bob Cooper. As with the previous box, the set is a stunning picture of this overlooked piano genius – filled with treasures in many different flavors! CD

OlatunjiMore Drums Of Passion ... LP
Columbia, 1966. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Babatunde Olatunji goes even more drum-crazy than before – working here with no less than nine percussionists, plus a host of singers as well! The tunes have a very rootsy groove throughout – instrumentation that only comes from the rhythm instruments, some of which are pointed towards melody – and a setting that features none of the added strings or horns you might get from a jazz or exotica-styled session of this nature – just drums and voices, presented by Columbia Records in a really groundbreaking blend! Titles include "Wasalu", "Ayinde", "Frekoba", "Alose", and "Omo Pup". LP, Vinyl record album

Knowledge-heavy hip hop from the Texas trio of Easy Lee, MexStep, and DJ Chicken George – working here with some heavy help from a lineup of guests that includes Black Pumas and Grupo Fantasma! Producer Adrian Quesada, the powerhouse between those two acts, is on hand as producer for a fair bit of the record – bringing in his special blend of funk and soul roots, with that genre-stepping quality he's known for – perfect here for the conscious rhymes of Third Root. The whole thing hearkens back to an early 90s level of edutainment – and features additional production from El Dusty, and guest work from Madine and Kam Franklin too. Titles include "Born To Rhyme", "Spring Groove", "The Next Kendrick", "BBG", "MexStep 4 President", "Summer Groove", "Fantasma Horns", and "The Last Triumvirate". LP, Vinyl record album

Bear Family (Germany), 1950s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A sweet little valentine, and one with a real 50s feel – a vibe that really lives up to the cover, served up here in tunes that mix together rock, pop, jazz, and country-styled modes! The set's got the best sort of Bear Family snap and sparkle – really well-chosen tunes that go way past the obvious – united with a theme of love and romance, but all pretty upbeat, rocking, and plenty darn fun overall! A good deal of the tracks here are brand new to our ears – great nuggets wrestled from the farther reaches of the postwar single boom – and titles include "She's The One For Me" by The Aquatones, "Love Me Forever" by Jodie Sands, "Baby Of Mine" by Tom Dorsam, "My Love Will Never Die" by The Channels, "Tongue Tied" by Jimmy Maddin, "Liebetwist" by The Violents, "I'm Sending You Red Roses" by Jimmy Wakely, "You Are My Destiny" by Paul Anka, "My Funny Valentine" by Mary Kaye Trio, "My Hero" by Sue Thompson, "Come Softly To Me" by The Fleetwoods, "You're My Inspiration" by Nancy Lee & The Bachelors, and "Forever" by Billy Walker. ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeThemes – Passion (180 gram pink & purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not the trashy kind of passion you might expect from the cover – but instead, one of the most trademark sides of legendary film composer Ennio Morricone – his talent for building a tune up slowly, almost out of nowhere, then letting it flow gently with a wonderful sense of space and sound! These cuts move between the bossa and jazz-inspired modes of his late 60s soundtracks, and that richer style that he would use to great international fame in the 80s – making the music here a great 70s bridge, with some wonderful tracks from a variety of Italian films of the time. The set features work from the films Il Giro Del Mondo, Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange, Le Due Sagioni Della Vita, Amanti D'Oltretomba, Cuore Di Mamma, I Figli Chiedono Perche, Per Le Antiche Scale, Maddalena, Mi Vedrai Tornare, and other lost classics – 21 tracks in all. ✨✧ McCoy TynerPassion Dance ... CD
Milestone/OJC, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Darkly-tinged piano work from McCoy Tyner – recorded live, in extended takes, with long-spiralling lines that soar in his best post-Coltrane approach to the piano! The album's got a depth and passion that's missing from some of Tyner's other trio sessions of the time – and features extremely strong accompaniment from Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums – both of whom are probably a good part of the passion on the set! Tyner's working with a noticeably hard left hand on the keys – driving the tunes with a bassy energy that's totally great – and titles include "Moment's Notice", "Passion Dance", "Search For Peace", "The Promise", and "Song Of The New World". Jazz SteppersGet Up! ... CD
Passion (UK), 1998. Used ... $11.99
A great batch of smooth soulful jazz – with a nice little funky tip to it! The record's got a sweet mellow vibe, with a mixture of fusion and modern soul sounds – and an overall feel that's similar to some of Roy Ayers' late 70's work, with a bit of a Bobby Lyle sound, and touches of some of the later Fantasy Records fusion stuff. The production's a bit more modern than that, but it's got a very nice mellow fusion vibe, with a sound that's just right for the stepper's scene. No house music at all, and hardly any funk – just a classic 70's mellow fusion sound, on the very smooth tip. CD

Timeless LegendSynchronized (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Escrow/Passion (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A strange name for a group that hardly stood the test of time – but a great record that's well worth discovering! Timeless Legend were a young soul group from Columbus Ohio in the mid 70s – and on this rare LP, they've got a sweet little style that's every bit as great as that of bigger acts of the time – sometimes as fragile as New Jersey male groups, other times as tight as the best from Philly! The group's really got their harmonies down well – shifting easily from sweet ballads to more upbeat numbers, working in a mellow 70s style that's made the album a lost treasure for soul collectors for years. Every cut's a winner – all original material handled with a professionalism and soulful care that makes for a very solid record overall! Titles include "Checking You Out", "Baby Don't Do This To Me", "You're The Best Thing", "Lonely Man", and "Ghost Of Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eddie HendersonEddie Henderson – Anthology ... CD
Soul Brother/Passion (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first compilation to really do justice to jazz funk legend Eddie Henderson – and a great one, too! Henderson's spacey trumpet style graced some of the best Blue Note and Capitol jazz sides to come out during the 70s – and his open-ended snakey way of playing was very different than many of his 70s contemporaries on the instrument. Plus, Eddie never minded a little bit of smooth production, and was certainly one of the more soulful players of his generation – forging a unique style that was in the same camp as Donald Byrd's sweet fusion work for Blue Note in the mid 70s, but with a spacey style that's really great. Nearly every cut on the CD features production work by Skip Drinkwater – who was to Eddie what Larry Mizell was to Donald Byrd – and most of this work has been long unavailable for years! Titles include "Kudu", "Explodition", "Involuntary Bliss", "Inside You", "Galaxy", "Butterfly", "Say You Will", "Amoroso", "Open Eyes", "Prance On", and "Hopscotch". Excellent work throughout – performed in the company of some of the 70s best funky fusion players! CD

What could have come out as clinical or academic comes through with passion and affection, partly because Amram could get such incredible players on the record, but mostly because the multi-instrumentalist ring leader is genuinely celebrating the music rather than simply replicating it. Why Not (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $9.99 11.99
A simply amazing session by pianist Joe Bonner – arguably his best ever! The album is one of a rare few that were cut for the Japanese Why Not label during the mid 70s, and like the others in the series, it features an American spiritual jazz player working far far past his usual mode. Bonner's in amazing form in a trio with Clint Houston and Billy Hart, and the tracks are filled with a fire and energy that you won't find on most of his American recordings from the time – as Bonner runs up and down the keys in a fury of passion, blending perfectly with Houston's deep soulful basslines, and Hart's dancing lyrical drums. Titles include "Triangle", "The Wind & The Rain", "Vega", "Mr PC" and "Invitation". CD

The set is a masterpiece of spiritual jazz – with Carn on keyboards setting up the groove, and wife Jean singing some incredible vocals – very different than her later soul work as a solo act, and with a vibe that's like Dee Dee Bridgewater at her soulful 70s best. Jean does a killer job with the album's classic vocal version of Bobby Hutcherson's "Little B's Poem" – done here with sweet lyrics that really open the song up a lot, and make it into an anthem of love and joy that we'd be hard pressed to match with any other tune! Record Runner (Brazil), Early 70s. Used ... $12.99
Early 70s Chilean rock from Congreso – pretty great stuff that works well with both post psych folk harmonies and tuneful craft, as well with some rawer, buzzing moments and unpredictable changes! The vocals are especially strong here, and while we don't speak the language, the passion comes through beautifully. A lot of strong rock came out of Chile in the post psych years and this record sounds as great to us as any we've heard from the period. Jimmy HeathLove Letter ... LP
Verve, 2020. New Copy Gatefold ... $22.99 24.99
The last album that Jimmy Heath ever gave the world – and a record that makes us miss him even more – as the whole thing takes Heath back to that spectacular mix of solo expressionist, thoughtful composer, and sensitive arranger territory of his best early years! And if you want proof of Jimmy's warm, open spirit – the set begins with a one minute bowed bass solo before Heath's horn even comes into play – then works sublime magic on a number of original numbers, and a few well-chosen classics – all put together by Jimmy as a "ballads" album, but in a way that's hugely different from some of the more facile songbook sessions of over-recorded standards. Instead, the Heath arrangements throughout are wonderfully fresh, and have a soulful quality that really blows us away – more than even on some of his other late records, which is what makes this final session so bittersweet. The core group features Kenny Barron on piano, Monte Croft on vibes, Russell Malone on guitar, and Lewis Nash on drums – and the set features vocals from Gregory Porter on one track, and Cecile McLorin Salvant on another – and Wynton Marsalis blows a trumpet solo on a third track. Titles include "Ballad From Upper Neighbors Suiter", "Left Alone", "Inside Your Heart", "La Mesha", "Con Alma", "Fasion Or Passion", and "Don't Explain". LP, Vinyl record album

IasosCelestial Soul Portrait ... CD
Numero, 1970s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
Spacey sounds from the enigmatic Iasos – a legendary figure in the 70s underground – and an artist with a heck of a great ear for organic electronics and unusual recording techniques! This cool collection of Iasos' music was put together by Carlos Nino with the guys at Numero – and as such, it's got a really sensitive feel – a way of bringing together the sounds and stories that really get at the subtle genius of Iasos – packaged in a lavish set that also features lots of vintage photos too. The style is often quite personal, and almost naive – as Iasos works on guitar, keyboards, amplified flute, and other odd tape and studio effects – all flowing out with a style that's often a bit cosmic, and pretty darn compelling. Titles include "Crystal Petals", "Procession On The Horizon", "Cloud Prayer", "Rainbow Canyon", "I Passion You A Leap Of Love Flame", and "Spring Temple Forest". CD

Jazzanova return to an earlier passion of theirs – the live DJ mix – and they serve up a whole blend of their favorite tunes, including some great bits exclusive to this set! The set's laid out in a real Gilles P sort of mode – very song-structured, with specific moods and paces that change as the set goes on – taking the listener on a groove-based trip through a variety of styles. Most of the tracks are of recent vintage, and a number are by Jazzanova themselves, or mixed specially for the set with a cool and laidback Sonar Kollektiv sort of vibe. Exclusive tracks include "Let Your Heart Be Free" by Jazzanova with Clara Hill & George Levin, "Uzoamaka (acapella)" by Oba Funke, "The Quest (Dixon's Not Released In 2001 mix)" by Attica Blues with Roger Robinson, "LOVE Beats" by Jazzanova, "Siding" by Extended Spirit, and "Mousse" by Slope. Elvin JonesVery RARE ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $22.99
Very rare indeed – and one of the best 70s albums from Elvin Jones – thanks to a tight quartet lineup who follow his every move with tremendous energy! The style's not as all-out bombastic as Jones could sometimes be in these days – and with a group that includes Roland Hanna on piano, Art Pepper on sax, and Richard Davis on bass, Elvin's in company that allows him to be strongly expressive on both sides of the spectrum! Sure, there's a few searching, soaring numbers that show Elvin's Coltrane roots – but there's also some gentler more introspective moments too, ones that provide great space for solos from Hanna and Pepper. Titles include "Witching Hour", "Pitter Pat", "Tin Tin Deo", "Zange", "Sweet Mama", and "Passion Flower". CD

John KlemmerInvolvement ... LP
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Beautiful early work from John Klemmer – one of the most under-rated talents of his generation, and a great player who frequently gets overlooked because of his later, smoother work. This album is Klemmer's first – recorded with a soulful Chicago tenor sound, touched with some of the freedoms of the late 60s Cadet Records scene. The approach is a bit like Eddie Harris at his best – with Klemmer rolling out soulful, stretched out notes over backing by a Harris-inspired rhythm section that includes Melvin Jackson on bass, Wilbur Cambell on drums, and Jodie Christian on piano. The groove is very solid, very in the pocket – and Klemmer blows in a tradition that includes Frank Strozier and Eric Alexander – 2 other players who've made a strong contribution to the Chicago scene. Titles include "My Blues", "Will N Jug", "Passion Food", "Stand In the Sun", and "Later With Them Woes". LP, Vinyl record album

A startling debut from Ben Mono – an up-and-comer from Compost Records who will bear watching in years to come! The album's kind of a mix of broken beats and flanged out soul – almost a trip to London, then Norway, and back to Germany – with everything getting jostled up nicely in the suitcase! Most of the set's instrumental, but a few well-chosen vocals are thrown in from time to time – giving the album more of a "voice" than usual for this sort of set, and showing Mono as capable of handling more than just a few beats and keys. Electronic soul with a beating heart – and a strong set of tracks that includes "Southern Circuit", "Saskia 2002", "The End", "Plastik Passion", "Talking Navigator", "Suburban Resident", "In Time", and "Juggling". Posi tone, 2021. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Great work from Out To Dinner – an all-star group who certainly weren't out to lunch when this set was recorded – as it's got all the sharp crackle of some of the members' other work on the Posi-Tone label! The lineup is a bit different than the previous record, but every bit as wonderful – theses bold colors from the vibes of Behn Gillece, soulful flow from the tenor of Nicole Glover, well-punctuated trumpet from Giveton Gelin, round bass from Boris Kozlov, and sharply snapping drums from Donald Edwards – joined by the alto sax of Patrick Cornelius on three of the album's thirteen tracks. Tunes are all relatively short – between four and six minutes – but are mostly originals from group members, and really pack a lot of imagination into a short space. EMI/7T's (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99
Sharp hooks, huge melodies, and 70s guitar pop greatness from Pilot – a genius pop group who only gave the world a handful of records, all of them pretty darn great! From The Album Of The Same Name includes their signature tune, "Magic" – and it's one of those songs everyone knows, whether or not they no who made it – but Pilot soars all around on these tunes. The guitars have punch, but the falsetto vocals are the main cabin of this vessel – and it's grand 70s soft rock of the first order! Other tracks include "Just A Smile", Lucky For Some", "Girl Next Door", "Sooner Or Later", "Never Give Up", "Sky Blue", "Never Give Up", and "Over The Moon". Second Flight is the excellent second album from Pilot, really perfecting the guitars, keyboards and vocals and hooks formula that shot them into the pop consciousness a year or so earlier – probably their best album ever! The opener "You're My No 1" is so catchy, we can hardly believe it's not a throwback pop radio staple, and the record has a few of tracks nearly as grand. The vocals & harmonies are better arranged, and the guitars and keyboards are in that great comfort zone between the glam pop of the previous couple years and the new wave pop to come. Somewhat silly bubble gum lyricism, sure, but it's tasty stuff! Other tracks include "January", "Love Is", "Call Me Round", "To You Alone", "Passion Piece", "Dear Artist" and more, plus the bonus demos "You're Devotion", "Love Is", "January" and "Lady Luck". Morin Heights is later work from 70s soft rock tunesmiths Pilot – a couple years on from their biggest hit, but still making gloriously catchy tunes! The hallmarks of their earlier stuff is here, with some twists & turns. The lyrics are the kind of lovestruck or lovelorn naivete that's cloying to some, and hopelessly endearing to others – relying more this time out and an overall catchiness than huge choruses and hummable singles. We'd fly with these guys anytime! Titles include "Hold On", "Canada", "First After Me", "Steps", "The Mover", "Penny In My Pocket", and "Maniac". Two's A Crowd is the last full 70s album from Pilot – just a duo by this point, but working with all the punch and panache of their early records! As before, their ability for hook-heavy tunes is amazing – as there's so many numbers here that could have been huge AM radio hits, but which also have some surprisingly thoughtful lyrical touches, and arrangements that are simple, but which really pack a hell of a punch. Titles include "Monday Tuesday", "Big Screen Kill", "Creeping Round At Midnight", "Library Door", and "Mr Do Or Die". Archie SheppBlase/Yasmina Revisited ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1969. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Important late 60s work from Archie Shepp – all recorded in Paris in 1969! First up is the album Blase – a crucial album from Archie Shepp – one that finds him enjoying new freedoms on the French scene at the end of the 60s – which then helps him take off from his earlier Impulse Records modes, at a level he'd then bring back to the label in the early 70s! There's a very free-thinking sense of combination here – as Shepp is breaking down from his idea of a more unified sound in the material – and opens the door at points to work from Jeanne Lee on voice and Chicago Beau and Julio Finn on harmonicas – in a lineup that also includes Malachi Favors on bass, Dave Burrell on piano, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. These are long, spiritual tracks that comprise some of his best European recordings of the time, and the titles include "There is a Balm in Gilead", "Touareg", "Blase", and "My Angel" – plus a strong reading of "Sophisticated Lady" – which maybe points the way towards some of the Shepp experiments in the late 70s. Next is the long title track from the album Yasmina, a Black Woman – a set that features Archie Shepp at his spiritual best – recording in Paris in 1969, and absorbing a heck of a lot pan-African influences! Shepp's in the lead on tenor – working with a great lineup of up-and coming avant geniuses – Clifford Thortnton on cornet, Lester Bowie on trumpet, Roscoe Mitchell on bass saxophone, Dave Burrell on piano, Malachi Favors on bass, Philly Joe Jones and Sunny Murray on drums – and the unusual addition of Art Taylor on "rhythm logs" and Laurence Devereaux on balafon! The centerpiece of the album is the amazing "Yasmina" – a long track that builds with passion and fire, pulsing with an intensity that you'd expect more from Pharoah Sanders than Shepp himself. CD

A special set of tracks that pays tribute to the original Africa Oscura record from Italian sound library composer Giuliano Sorgini – a fantastic blend of percussion and electronics that was almost a 70s update on older exotica modes, but with a much darker vibe overall! Here, contemporary talents take the original music and mix things up a bit – often with a rhythmic vibe, but never in a mode that gets in the way of Sorgini's original genius! Who Trio (Michel Wintsch/Gerry Hemmingway/Banz Oester)Strell – The Music Of Billy Strayhorn & Duke Ellington ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2020. New Copy ... $13.99
The WHO here is a trio with Michel Wintsch on piano, Gerry Hemingway on drums, and Banz Oester on bass – a trio who make very different music with the songs of Duke Ellington! The vibe is very open and creative – very much in the spirit of Michel's best recordings of the past decade or so – but the real star of the set might be bassist Oester, as he handles his instrument in these really amazing ways – sometimes rhythmic, with qualities that set the pulse for the tunes – but other times with these unusual sounds that sometimes feel as if they're making up for the missing horn players that might have been in larger group recordings, and resonating wonderfully with the looser, freer lines of Wintsch on piano. Drummer Hemingway finds a way to space himself perfectly, and also adds in some really compelling moments on voice – on titles that include "The Mooche", "Black & Tan Fantasy", "Passion Flower", "Angelica", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "In A Sentimental Mood". Not really the house of ages – given that most of these cuts are so rare, they're only making their first appearance here – but a great little collection that reminds us that there's still so much to discover in the funky underground of the last few years of the 20th Century! Jeremy Newell really knocks it out of the park with this one – and comes up with a deep, soulful collection of house tracks from the farthest reaches of the scene – either work that only appeared on very obscure singles, or didn't even make it past tape back in the day – leaping forth here with a wickedly groovy sound that's more than worth the wait. Prestige/Craft, 1964. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Terry Callier's first album – recorded in 1964 when he was a wee teen hanging around Chicago's folk scene! As the title indicates, the album's definitely got a folk-styled sound – but also as the "new" implies, it's got a sound all it's own, fresh and free – and that sound is the genius that is Terry Callier! This is very stripped down material, very dark and brooding – a good chance to hear Terry before he hit the Chess studios and they backed him up with a lot of orchestrations (although we love the orchestrations, too.) The material has a soulful spiritual feel, and is sung with a lot of passion over acoustic guitar. Think of Nina Simone's folksier stuff from the same time, if you need a reference. Tracks include "900 Miles", "Cotton Eyed Joe", "It's About Time", "Promenade In Green", and "I'm A Drifter". This expanded edition includes bonus tracks – "Be My Woman", "Jack O' Diamonds", and "The Golden Apples Of The Sun" – plus alternate takes of "Promenade In Green" and "900 Miles". "I rap with the Passion of Christ, Ni**a, cross me!" BE isn't exactly a back-to-basics LP in the vein of his classic work for Relativity – but it is indeed a return to a focused, genuinely soulful, no BS approach – and it's a very welcome one at that! It seems like Com was a bit affected by some of the criticism folks had for the spacious, astral Electric Circus LP – if you ask us Common had no reason to apologize, but we'd be lyin' if we said we weren't hoping for another batch of tracks that sound like they could have been written on a front porch on the southside of Chicago. This is indeed that record – 12 tracks, few guest appearances, and a warm, consistent sound all the way through. There's a 3 track span on this album, from "Chi-City" through "Real People", that's seriously close to perfection. Welcome home, Common! Ruggedly produced by Kanye West, with a couple of stellar production contributions from Jay Dee! Other tracks include "The Corner" feat Last Poets, "Go!", "Faithful", "Testify", "Love Is. . .", "The Food (live)" (this great track has been circulating for a while since it was performed on Chappelle's Show, and we're thrilled Common and Kanye had the good sense to include it on the album), "They Say" featuring John Legend and "It's Your World (Part 1 &2)". An excellent debut from Rio-raised, London-based Raf Vilar on Far Out – breezy, airy melodies and light arrangements with enough classic bossa craft to stand the test of time! Raf is the nephew of the legendary Ivan Conti, so it's safe to say that he's got this stuff in his blood, but fear not any possible nepotism getting him a record deal. We were spinning this album again and again, digging every second before we even read a brief bio. Trust us, it's the real deal! The arrangements are mostly laidback, but filled with unfakeable love and passion for easygoing bossa, with some of the best tracks featuring just Raf's vocals and a guitar – but the more arranged numbers with piano, bass, sax and additional percussion are great, too. A straight-up incredible batch of recordings by the Austin singer-songwriter ghost of a legend that is Blaze Foley – a self-destructive character better known to the stars he influenced than he is to the masses (he is the "Drunken Angel" who Lucinda Williams wrote and sang about) – material from the mid-to-late 70s when he was billed as Deputy Dawg and put together here for one of the best compilations on Fat Possum in years! What makes this set so wonderful is the cohesive flow of it. It's solo folk country material recorded in a trio of intimate sessions from February of '76, November of that same year, and September of '78. Verve, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Gritty prose from the legendary Harlan Ellison – a writer known best for his science fiction work, but who's represented here by some very early material that's plenty violent and salacious! The writing should be taken in the spirit of the title and cover – and Harlan himself does a great job of situating the work in his introduction to the book – telling the tale of the somewhat sleazy roots of this read, which is almost as titillating as the stories themselves! Yet despite the obvious apology for the schlock quality of the stories (some weren't even originally billed under Ellison's own name!) – there's a real force to the writing throughout – a youthful, powerful feel that bridges the gap between classic noir and underground exploitation – as you'll find in stories like "Sex Gang", "Jeannie With The Bedroom Eyes", "A Girl Named Poison", and "Both Ends Of The Candle". An overlooked gem from trumpeter Charles Tolliver – not as well known as his Strata East sessions with Music Inc, but equally great! The sound here is a bit different than some of Tolliver's other albums of the 70s – as the group features the guitar of Nathan Page in place of the usual piano – working with an incredible rhythm duo of Steve Novosel on bass and Alvin Queen on drums, both players who gel together beautifully here, making the album a rhythmic delight throughout! Page's guitar often has these weird little edgey moments, which seems to bring out the same in Tolliver – adding in a new complexity to his well-known style of far-reaching lines on trumpet. A great little set from Barney Wilen's late revival period – strong, solid blowing all the way through – with a depth that almost matches his classics from the early days! The group here is a quintet – with Enrico Rava on trumpet in the frontline alongside Wilen's tenor and soprano sax – often joining Barney tightly on the head arrangements, in a mode that's strongly soulful, with plenty of classic touches. Many of the tunes are familiar jazz standards, but stretched out nicely with lots of room to roam around – and a few great numbers on the set are of European origin, shorter, but with some wonderful colors and tones that Wilen illuminates with his horn – and which the group plays with a slightly Latin flair in the rhythms. 2 Beach Boys albums on 2CDs – plus the bonus ep of material from Holland. The Carl & The Passions album was supposed to be a back to basics rocker, but it's a bit weak from this vantage point – although has some of those nice little later numbers that we always seem to overlook when shuffling through BB albums too quickly. Holland is a much more impressive effort – as it kicks off with the sublime "Sail On Sailor", proof that the group were ready to forge a whole new sound of 70s pop, plus a nice mix of tight pop songs and looser Smile-like tracks. Titles include "The Trader", "Funky Pretty", "Only With You", and the "California Saga". The CD also includes "Mount Vernon & Fairway" – a "fairy tale" that was included with the original LP as a bonus ep. The diverse elements flow naturally, which is really not an easy thing to pull off for a group that clearly cherishes Latin and Latin-American musical forbears very deeply. A true classic by Jimi with the original Experience lineup – the third of three straight up masterpiece LPs to come out in just over a year's time by the group! You could call the leftfield astral effects in the mix experimental if you had to – innovations in the studio with echo, that hallucinatory backwards sound effect and other stranger bits – but the passionate, naturally expressive playing and singing by Jimi makes it all fell just right, and the Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell still don't get enough credit for being at the heart of such greatness. Bruno Marini may not be the biggest name in that small group of players of the baritone saxophone – but he's a hell of a musician, and works his horn in a really wonderful way on this debut set! Marini's got an ability to swing with a modern sense of tone and color – a bit like Cecil Payne at his best, back in the day – but also very different, with this human, compassionate quality that brings things out of his instrument that we're not sure we've heard from anyone else! The set features all original numbers – written either by Marini, or the group's pianist Marcello Tonolo – and the rest of the combo features Marc Abrams on bass and Valerio Abeni on drums. Titles include "Screech", "Backbiter", "Alyke", "White Snowballs", and "Drawing". CD

Lee MorganLee Morgan (aka The Last Session) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $18.99
Brilliant work throughout – the last studio album ever cut by Lee Morgan, and a mindblowing session that always leaves us wondering how massive he would have become if he hadn't been tragically murdered shortly after it was recorded! The album's a huge change from Morgan's already-great work of the 60s – and features some very extended numbers, most a side long and these free-flowing numbers that are played by a larger group than usual – but with all the intensity and focus of a small group date from Lee! The set features key work from a young Billy Harper on tenor – especially on his own fantastic compositions "Capra Black" and "Croquet Ballet" – and for many folks, the record was a key introduction to Harper's genius. But the whole lineup is wonderful too – especially Harold Mabern on piano – and other titles include "In What Direction Are You Heading", "Angela", and "Inner Passions Out". CD

Van MorrisonAstral Weeks ... CD
Warner, 1968. Used ... $4.99
Van's debut album for Warner Brothers and a pretty radical departure from anything he'd done before – breaking all kinds of new ground for his own most creative work and helping pave the way for all kinds of hauntingly poetic rock, folk rock, and singer-songwriter records to come! It doesn't take more than a few seconds of opening title track, with Morrison's rawly passionate voice and spiritually yearning lyrics, to know this is a pretty remarkable creative leap from pop leaning sound of "Brown Eyed Girl" and other preceding efforts – , and it gets even more far out from there both lyrically and instrumentally! It's almost folk jazz, arrangements wise, with flute and largely acoustic instrumentation, a really spontaneous feel to the sessions, and always hypnotic, seemingly stream of consciousness vocals by Van. As loose and spacious as the sound is, the emotional resonance is pretty heavy, and sequenced as a cycle: part one In The Beginning on side 1 and part two Afterwards on side 2. A stunner! RodriguezComing From Reality (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sussex/Universal, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
An amazing second set from Sixto Rodriguez – recorded in the legendary Landsdowne Studios in London, with a groove that's a great extension from his debut! All of Rodriguez's best elements are in place here – his folksy guitar, personal lyrical style, and surprisingly biting approach to a variety of topics – and the London setting provides him with an even more sophisticated backdrop than before, one that creates a rich palette of sounds that takes the music in some really wonderful directions! There's a bit of strings at times, but most instrumentation is by a small combo – which includes Chris Spedding on guitar and Tony Carr on percussion – so that Rodriguez's vocals and guitar are really right up front in the mix, recorded with a brilliant balance between sharpness and compassion. Titles include "Climb Up On My Music", "Silver Words", "Heikki's Suburbia Bus Tour", "I Think Of You", "To Whom It May Concern", "Halfway Up The Stairs", and "Cause". LP, Vinyl record album

Arhoolie, 1971. Used ... $14.99
A passionate, fairly wild off the cuff recording from Bahaman folk guitarist and spirited singer/howler/grunter/one-of-a-kind performer Joseph Spence! Good Morning Mr Walker was recorded one Spring day in 1971, except for the last three tunes, which are concert recordings from later that evening. Spence emotes over his plaintive acoustic picking and playful strumming, but his vocals are really something else – and wholly loveable. Titles include "Out On The Rolling Sea", "I See Mary And Joseph", "I See Mary And Joseph", "Lay Down My Brother", "Coming In On A Wing And A Prayer", "Don't Let Nobody Burn Down Burma Road", "Be A Friend To Jesus" and "Mary Ann". Now Again, 1970s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $28.99 31.99
Melodic psychedelia from 70s Iran – an incredible full scale anthology of recordings by guitarist and vocalist Kourosh Yaghmaei from the pre-revolution years – and an absolute treasure! Kouroush often recorded with his brothers – Kourosh singing lead and playing guitars or bass – with Kamran Yaghmaei on guitars and backing vocals and Kambiz Yaghmaei on keys and backing vocals. Other players contribute drums, bass and occasional additional elements – harmonica or horns on few tracks. The sound is a really wonderful amalgam of western garage, psych and strains of funk with native Iranian modes and tempos. The songs here sink in on an emotional level without us knowing a word of the language – the passionate vocals work wonderfully in that regard – but musically, it's innovative stuff that's nicely tripped out and heavily rhythmic, without compromising the melodic sensibility. The heavy duty 3LP set features 21 tracks in all – in a sweet 6 panel gatefold with a 24 page booklet – featuring extensive notes and photos, with Kourosh's story told in autobiographical detail. Like other recent Now Again packages, it's really beautifully done! Titles include "Gol E Yakh", "Dar Enteha", "Paiz", "Leila", "Del Dareh Pir Misheh", "Shirin Joon", "Ghazal", "Mosafere Shahre Baran", "Saghe", "Niyayesh", "Saraabe Toe", "Baroona", "Khaar", Bachehaye Khoobe Koocheh" and more. Jazzman/Stones Throw, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Quite possibly one of the greatest funk compilations ever – and we're not just saying that because we're from the Midwest! The genius compilers at Jazzman spent years scouring the smaller cities of the American hinterlands – tracking down obscure musicians, long-lost labels, and nearly-gone master tapes – all to bring together 23 bits of rare funk that bristle with the same energy and excitement as the day they were first recorded! The package is incredible – not only filled with incredible tunes that somehow manage to push the boundaries and redefine our understanding of classic funk from the time, but also doing so in a package that's filled with liner notes that offer more information on the artists than probably their own mothers know! Plus, the set's also got some previously unissued numbers as well – making it a must-have for any funk fan, even if you've somehow managed to track down original copies of some of these choice bits! Titles include "Whip It" by The New Establishment In Soul, "Let's Do It Today (full version)" by The Us, "Pushin To The Top" by Markus Kelly & The Impassions, "Sissy Walk" by Billy Ball & The Upsetters, "Tell Her" by Fred Williams & The Jewels Band, "The Hatch" by The TMGs, "Boots Groove" by The Soul Tornados, "Po Boy's Dream" by Illinois Connection, "It's Not You For Me (live)" by Billy Joe Holloman, "Funky In Here" by Dayton Sidewinders, "Master Groove" by Henry Peters & The Imperials, and "A Day In The Life" by Chocolate Snow. One of the greatest records that Charlie Haden ever did, and a record that stands as sort of a bookend to his Liberation Music album on Impulse. As with that record, he's got a large group on here, and also like that one, he's playing a batch of tracks that have a definite political bent. Players include Don Cherry, Carla Bley, Dewey Redman, Paul Motian, Jim Pepper, and Michael Mantler; and tracks include "Ballad Of The Fallen", "Too Late", "La Pasionaria", and "The People United Will Never Be Defeated". The sound's a little bit less harsh than his Impulse recording, but it's no less impassioned, and the record's a very emotional batch of music. CD

✨✧ Bob DylanSlow Train Coming ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The first album in Dylan's so-called "Christian Period", but it's not really the uber-dramatic departure from the "old" Dylan that it was treated as at the time – gospel soul backing vocals and testifying lyricism for sure, but it sounds more like gospel has come to Dylan than it sounds like Dylan has "gone gospel". Slow Train Coming has a focused approach, ala Blood On The Tracks, even if this train doesn't come close to crossing over onto those particular tracks – and the return to a leaner, more focused vibe is welcome one. It's got stellar studio players in the mix, and producer Jerry Wexler's production touches on a soul sound, but smartly hews to Dylan's vocal style and lyrical focus. Dylan's high bar for a masterpiece given his trailblazing past didn't give this record or the following couple much a chance to succeed on their own merits back in the day, but all these years later...wow, this is really good, passionate stuff. Includes "Gotta Serve Somebody", "Precious Angel", "I Believe In You", "Slow Trait", "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking", "Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others)", "When You Gonna Wake Up", "Man Gave Name To All The Animals", "When He Returns". Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Quite a crazy little record from Charles Mingus! Mingus plays piano and sings (yes, you read that right!) in a tight sextet with Booker Ervin and Roland Kirk on reeds, and Jimmy Knepper on trombone. Mingus is trying out a kind of messed-up, blues-inspired sound here – but for some reason the tracks sort of fall short of their potential, perhaps because they're not infused with the same clarity and anger as his earlier works, or perhaps because Mingus' work on the piano just isn't as fierce as his bass playing. Still, the album's a nice one, and way better than the other Mingus piano album, on Impulse. A sprawling deluxe version of a once semi-overlooked Wilco effort, finally being acknowledged as a major milestone for the band – as it was a huge shift from their alt country and folk rock roots towards unpredictable, though warmly approachable art rock! A glorious send off from J Dilla – with some of the most soulful productions Dilla's ever laid down – and appearances by Common, D'Angelo, Pharoahe Monch, Madlib, MED, Black Thought and others! It's impossible to listen to The Shining without considering the sad circumstances surrounding its release, and all too easy to over praise, but this record is filled timelessly inventive production – and passionate rhymes from the honored guests. A lot of the more leftfield, abstract touches that create most of the character on the Donuts LP are really on the outskirts of the sound here – a much richer, deeper, funky drum influenced batch of sounds. Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Not really famous, but gritty & grooving bluesy gospel soul from Famous L Renfroe – and artist who might even be more mysterious to us after hearing the record! The Flying Sweet Angel Of Joy is kind of a dreamlike mix of impassioned vocals, electric guitar and bass, with some drums. There's often chorus backing vocals behind the spirited, but easygoing lead vocals, and the sound often has a gritty soul blues vibe underneath the emotive, spiritual lead vocals. Titles include "Children", "Believe", "Feed", "Reaching", It's So", "Why Not I", "And Man", "His Love", "Circle", "War" and "Tell". CD

✨✧ Talking HeadsTalking Heads 77 ... LP
Sire/Rhino, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The mindblowing first album by The Talking Heads – a bold statement by a very young band who'd go on to shape the sounds of the left field for generations to come! The sound is spare and very focused – maybe the first layer that David Byrne would then build up when adding more percussion, horns, electronics, and some of those elements from funk and global music that were such a continuing influence. Here, the group's fresh out of school, filled with imagination, and able to do so much with just a little – all led by Byrne's fantastic sense of songwriting and presentation – in a mode that's completely his own. The record's not punk, not new wave, and still continues to be in its own space of inventiveness, imagination, and forthright lyricism. Every song's a classic – and titles include "Uh-Oh Love Comes To Town", "New Feeling", "Tentative Decisions", "Happy Day", "Who Is It", "No Compassion", "The Book I Read", "Don't Worry About The Government", "First Week/Last Week Carefree", "Psycho Killer", and "Pulled Up". ✨✧ Kourosh YaghmaeiBack From The Brink – Pre-Revolution Psychedelic Rock From Iran – 1973 to 1979 ... CD
Now Again, 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The 2CD version features 30 tracks in all – bound in a thick, hardcover book style package – featuring extensive notes and photos, with Kourosh's story told in autobiographical detail. Like other recent Now Again packages, it's really beautifully done! Titles include "Gol E Yakh", "Dar Enteha", "Paiz", "Leila", "Del Dareh Pir Misheh", "Shirin Joon", "Ghazal", "Mosafere Shahre Baran", "Saghe", "Niyayesh", "Saraabe Toe", "Baroona", "Khaar", Bachehaye Khoobe Koocheh" and more. ✨✧ Jimi Hendrix ExperienceElectric Ladyland ... CD
MCA/Reprise, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
A true classic by Jimi with the original Experience lineup – the third of three straight up masterpiece LPs to comeout in just over a year's time by the group! A massive 2LP effort that include s"Voodoo Chile", "Crosstown Traffic", "Electric Ladyland", "Little Miss Strange", "Moon Turn The Tides", "Still Raining Still Dreaming" and "All Along The Watchtower". CD
(BMG music club pressing.)
