Ezra CollectiveWhere I'm Meant To Be ... CD
Partisan, 2022. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Ezra Collective are a group who've been burning up the British scene so much in recent years, they've barely had time to give us a full length album – a situation that's more than corrected by this well-done set! The combo are often tied to some of the best jazz experiments in London of the past decade or so, but in the true fashion of that city's culture, they manage to weave together other strands of music besides jazz – plenty of post-colonial touches from Afro Funk, dub, and even hip hop – while also standing strong with the strength of jazz-based playing to set them apart from so many other groups who just jumble together influences and spill them out in the studio. There's a rock-solid quality to the overall presentation here – a really unified records that moves through tracks that include "Victory Dance", "Live Strong", "Ego Killah", "Togetherness", "No Confusion", "Never The Same Again", "Love In Outer Space", "Belonging", and "Welcome To My World" – plus a few words from Steve McQueen! Fela & Africa 70Roforofo Fight (orange & green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Partisan, 1972. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $32.99 34.99
A brilliant album from Fela – and one that shows him really coming into his own, with that tremendous new sound that would go onto influence decades of musicians! The title track – "Roforofo Fight" – is a side-long jam that instantly sets a new standard for African funk – skittish drums, a sweet keyboard line that snakily sets the groove, and a wonderful long alto solo that's got even more raspy soul than Fela's vocals! Those vocals are sometimes more broken up, verbally – and have an instrumental quality at the start – then lay into the lyrics later, with some great supporting backup. The flipside features the side-long "Go Slow" – a tune that layers and layers sounds as it moves on – from an initial thin keyboard line, to a rumbling bassy blend that has lots of room for the horns and vocals! (Heavy 2LP pressing – on limited colored vinyl!)

Femi Kuti/Made KutiLegacy + (Stop The Hate/Foreward) ... CD
Partisan, 2021. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99 16.99
Two generations of the Fela Kuti legend work here back to back – in a double length set that features one full album from Fela's son, and another by his grandson! Femi is up first on a set titled Stop The Hate – full-on Afro Funk with plenty of message in the music – the older Kuti in the lead on vocals, trumpet, alto, and organ – getting superb backup from a full horn section over lots of heavy rhythms! At times, Femi almost seems as instrumentally great as Fela – and his vocals are often a bit more pointed, with a stronger global attempt to get the message out – on titles that include "As We Struggle Everyday", "Stop The Hate", "Land Grab", "Privatization", "Show Of Shame", "Young Boy Young Girl", and "You Can't Fight Corruption With Corruption". Made Kuti follows up in a similar spirit, but in a slightly different way – as the singer also handles all the other instrumentation on his set – almost coming across like a large Afro Funk ensemble by himself, thanks to the magic of the studio! Made plays drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, and tenor, alto, and baritone saxes – but you'd hardly think the album's a one man show, as the sound is full and rich – every bit the blend of heavy rhythms and politics as Femi's record. Titles include "Hymn", "Young Lady", "Different Streets", "Blood", "Your Enemy", "Free Your Mind", and "We Are Strong". CD

✨✧ CymandeCymande (orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Janus/Partisan, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The fantastic first album by one of the most unique funk groups of all time! A key part of the crumbling British colonial network that produced some excellent music in the postwar years, Cymande was comprised mostly of West Indians who'd emigrated to England in the 60s, eventually meeting up under a shared musical vision – a completely new blend of funk, dub, jazz, and soul that was unlike anything else that had been recorded before, save for the work of a few other Brit groups of a similar nature. This first album's one of their greatest – and it's a refreshing batch of tunes that mix together heavy basslines, laidback drumming, and a righteous soul vocal style that's got a bit of a stoner touch. The album includes the group's massive cut "The Message", a bit of a minor hit when it was released (and later sampled quite famously) – plus the funky classics "Dove", "Zion I", "Listen", "Bra", and "Rickshaw". Pick this up, and sample one of the 70's most unique funk groups! LP, Vinyl record album

Various1981 – All Out Attack (3CD set) ... CD
Captain Oi (UK), 1981. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 38.99
A big collection of tracks from a time when the British scene was starting to get mean and lean – when the world of punk was separating from the mainstream a bit more before – pushing deeper in a range of cultural and political modes, and hardly the kind of chart-possible work that was first coming out in the late 70s! There's still a few elements here of the old days, and a number of groups that might also resonate a bit with post-punk material – but the set's brimming over with plenty of oi and new hardcore energy – a similar shift to what was taking place on America's west coast scene at the same moment. The box has a big booklet of notes on the artists and the moment – and the set contains a total of 75 tracks in all, with work from The Exploited, Blitz, Chelsea, Cockney Rejects, Demob, Partisans, Dark, Xtraverts, Knox, Outcasts, Vice Squad, Toy Dolls, Subhumans, The Boys, Skodas, Membranes, Nuclear Socketts, The Aces, Erazerhead, The Tarts, Revillos, Salford Jets, Abrasive Wheels, Charge, Rudi, The Nips, Varukers, Product, The Business, TV Smith's Explorers, and many others.
