✨✧ Conrad SchnitzlerParacon – Paragon Sessions Outtakes 1978/1979 ... LP
Bureau B (Germany), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic spacey sounds from Conrad Schnitzler – all recorded at Peter Baumann's Paragon Studios, right around the same time as Schnitzler's trio of Con albums in the late 70s! The music here is similar to those, but more experimental too – very minimal, and played with live electronic instrumentation – but at a level that often has waves and patterns repeating in a great way – maybe showing the later generation that true giants like Conrad never needed programs to make the best of their music! The set features 10 tracks in all – all very different, and in the best minimalist German electronic modes of the late 70s. LP, Vinyl record album

Conrad SchnitzlerCon ... CD
Paragon/Bureau B (Germany), 1978. New Copy ... $16.99
Beautiful early solo work from Conrad Schnitzler – a set that's kind of a distillation of the ideas he brought to Tangerine Dream at the start, but distilled down into much more personal territory, with a very different vibe than the sound of that group at the time! The music is every bit as electronic as you'd expect, but it's often quite poetic too – occasionally with some of the spareness of the Sky Records side of the spectrum – but with maybe more of the darkness and more experimental qualities you'd expect from Schnitzler –almost echoes of the Bowie/Eno instrumental experiments of the period. Titles include "Zug", "Metall I", "Black Nails", "Ballet Statique", and "Electric Garden". CD

Barrington Levy/Scientist & Prince Jammy/Viceroys/Tristan PalmaLinval Thompson Trojan Dancehall Albums Collection (Poor Man Style/Scientist & Jammy Strike Back/We Must Unite/Settle Down Girl) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
Four Trojan Records albums, all produced by Linval Thompson – and featuring some bonus tracks too! First up is Poor Man Style – a gem of a record from Barrington Levy – done in that laidback, easy-stepping style that always worked perfectly for the singer's vocals! Linval Thompson produced, and he brings in all these cool touches around the edges – early dancehall modes that are nicely understated, and which still maybe resonate more with the roots generation than later crossover hits – a righteous vibe that makes the whole album simmer beautifully all the way through! Titles include "She Is The Best Girl", "Don't Give Up", "Sensimella", "True Love", "Poorman Style", "This Little Boy", "Rob & Gone", "I Can't Wait Too Long", "Man Give Up", and "I Love I Love You". Next is Scientist & Jammy Strike Back – a record in which Scientist and Prince Jammy look an awful lot like Star Wars characters on the cover – but with grooves that are every bit as deep as their other dub classics from the time – completely amazing from conception to execution! If anything, the stars might be the perfect place for the music – given that the sounds here are very open, spacious, and way-out – full of as much echo as attack, at a level that reminds us that the pair are maybe some of the most minimalist of the dub generation! Rhythms are by the Roots Radics, but are always nice and spare – and there's plenty of splash and electro echo to link together the space between the notes – on titles that include "Flash Gordon Meets Luke Skywalker", "Crushing Of The Stormtroopers", "The Princess Takes Her Revenge", "Buck Rogers In The Black Hole", "Death Of Mr Spock", and "Storming The Death Star". Next is We Must Unite – a tremendous album from The Viceroys – a Jamaican vocal trio that we'd rank right up there with The Paragons and Melodians, and who work in this beautiful message-oriented mode next to wicked production from Linval Thompson! The record's got some slight electro-styled touches at the edge – used gently next to slow-tripping rhythms – while the trio step out with these warm harmonies that really bring a lot to the lyrics of the songs – a righteous batch of tracks that include "We Must Unite", "The Intelligence Of Her Mind", "Come Closer My Love", "They Can't Stop Us Now", and "Rising On The Strength Of Jah". Singer Tristan Palma follows in a very similar mode, but as a solo lead – on the well-crafted Settle Down Girl, also produced by Linval Thompson! Titles include "Settle Down Girl", "Run Around Woman", "Losted My Wife", "Don't Make Me Cry", "Come Turn Me On", and "Rosie Bell". CD also features bonus tracks – "If I Didn't Want Your Loving (12" mix)" and "Loving Version" by The Melodians – and "Settle Down Girl (12" mix)", and "Settle Down Girl Version" by Tristan Palma. CD

✨✧ VariousDuke Reid International Disco Series – The Complete Collection (3CD set) ... CD
Treasure Isle/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Later work from legendary Jamaican producer Duke Reid – best known for the rocksteady classics on his Treasure Isle label in the late 60s, but still going strong here well into the 70s! The tracks here represent nearly every single 12" release issued by Reid on the many branches of Treasure Isle in the late 70s – music that takes full advantage of the extended length and the wider dynamic range offered by a 12" single over a 7" release – which means that the bottoms are even deeper, and the vocals seem to soar even higher – as Duke and his crew continue to perfect their talents in the studio. The set features a total of 38 tracks, all nice and long, 4 of which are from the vaults and appear here for the first time – supported by the usual fantastic Doctor Bird notes and details – with work by Phyllis Dillon, The Techniques, The Paragons, Alton Ellis, The Sensations & Jah Stone, Joya Landis, Ken Parker, John Holt, Alton Ellis & Papa Ritchie, Carly Bryan & The Supersonics, The Techniques & Ranking Trevor, The Jamaicans, and The Melodians. ✨✧ VariousRubadub Revolution – Early Dancehall Productions From Bunny Lee ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet early 80s tracks from the legendary Bunny Striker Lee – work that shows him stepping effortlessly into the dancehall modes of the time – still a master of rhythm, and of finding the right sort of talents to add to his sound! The package features a nice mix of bigger names and up-and-coming talents – and also includes a number of unissued tracks from Bunny's archives, which fit perfectly alongside the singles in the set – music that's mostly in a late roots-into-dancehall mode, instead of some of the bigger, more commercial work that would circulate under the dancehall name a few years later. As always with Pressure Sounds, the presentation, sound quality, and notes are great – and titles include "Gun Fever" by Frankie Jones, "People Cruel (12" mix)" by Cornell Campbell & Errol Scorcher, "Lay Down Flat" by Devon Edwards, "Revolution Fighters" by Simple Simon, "Too Popular" by Trevor Castell, "Babylon No Badda Haul & Pull Me" by Devon Edwards, "A Place Called Zion" by The Paragons, "The Right Time (12" mix)" by Neville Brown & John Wayne, "Bandulo (12" mix)" by Cornell Campbell & Scientist, "Know Yourself Mankind" by The Paragons, "Lazer Beam (12" mix)" by Don Carlos & Papa Tullo, and "I Man Come Again" by Johnny Clarke. ✨✧ VariousPlay It Again – R&B Answers, Copycats, & Follow-Ups Vol 1 ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really cool collection – one that brings together 32 answer songs and follow-ups from the 50s – all R&B numbers that stand more than strongly enough on their own, but which are even cooler when you know that most of them are kind of a "part 2" to bigger hits of the time! Unlike other packages of this nature, which often also include the hits – this one just features the more obscure follow-ups – which makes the whole thing a lot more fresh, even as some of the tunes echo familiar melodies or themes. There's plenty to love here if you dig older R&B on labels like King, Chess, Atlantic, and Modern – and titles include "Play It Again" by Pat Lundy, "My Real Gone Rocket" by Jackie Brenston, "Mr Hound Dog's In Town" by Roy Brown, "Pappa" by Benny Brown, "Florence Don't Leave Me" by The Paragons, "Charlie Brown Got Expelled" by Joe Tex, "I Found Out" by The Du Droppers, "Yes I Will Love You Tomorrow" by Jon E Holiday, "Be My Girl" by Dee Dee Sharp, "Babalu's Wedding Day" by The Eternals, "I Quit My Knockin" by Carol Fran, and "All In Your Mind" by The Harptones.
