✨✧ Aaron NevilleTell It Like It Is/Why Worry? ... 7-inch
Par Lo, Mid 60s. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
Classic! Way before he was reduced to a million bad stereotypes of New Orleans music, Aaron was a supremely excellent soul singer – and this amazing single will always be one of his greatest legacies! Sure, you've heard "Tell It Like It Is" a million times on the radio – but blast it out of this raw 45, and the song will pop your head off! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Chick CoreaPiano Improvisation Vol 1 ... CD
ECM, 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Chick Corea's almost borrowing a page from the ECM book of Keith Jarrett here – working in a solo acoustic piano mode that's incredibly fluid and free – filled with warm touches that stand in really stark contrast to his more avant-leaning keyboard styles of a few years before! The tunes are often built around a simple structure, but are extremely compelling – themes that often have the bracing humanity of some of Corea's first work on the Return To Forever records, even though they're served up here in spare solo piano versions. Titles include the extended "Where Are You Now" suite, plus "Noon Song", "Song For Sally", "Ballad For Anna", and "Song Of The Wind". CD

Peabo BrysonParadise ... CD
Capitol/PTG (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Maybe the greatest record ever from Peabo Bryson – a wonderfully smooth set that features help on production and arrangements from the great Johnny Pate! Pate brings a groove that's got all the warm, sophisticated touches he developed while working on the Chicago scene – a bit of a jazz undercurrent, which really hips things up a lot – and helps give an instrumental setting that's rich enough to match Peabo's really sublime vocals! The blend of everything here is perfect all the way through – at a level that has Bryson really hitting new heights, and steering clear of any later cliches as well. Titles include "Love Has No Shame", "I Love The Way You Love", "Paradise", "Love In Every Eason", "Life Is A Child", "When Will I Learn", and "I Believe In You". CD

✨✧ Don CherryMu First Part/Mu Second Part (UK version) ... CD
BYG/Charly (UK), 1970. Used ... $9.99
Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! There's a few echoes of the global elements that Cherry would later embrace more strongly in the 70s – but the core energy here is mostly improvised jazz, handled at a level that really makes a lot better use of the freedom than some of Don's contemporaries. Titles include "Total Vibration", "Sun Of The East", "Brilliant Action", "Terrestrial Beings", "Bamboo Night", "The Mysticism Of My Sound", "Psycho Drama", "Smiling Faces Going Places", "Teo Teo Can", and "Dollar Brand/Spontaneous Composing/Exert Man On The Moon". Atomic/School DaysNuclear Assembly Hall ... CD
Okka Disk, 2004. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 19.99
A brilliant pairing of free jazz forces – the Chicago-based School Days group of Ken Vandermark, and the groundbreaking Atomic combo from the Nordic jazz underground! The players here are all very like-minded, and fold together beautifully – in an octet lineup that features reeds from Ken Vandermark and Frekerik Ljungkvist, trumpet from Magnus Broo, trombone from Jeb Bishop, piano from Havard Wiik, vibes from Kjell Nordeson, bass from Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, and drums from Paal-Nilssen Love! Both Flaten and Love would become frequent collaborators in Chicago over the years – but this set captures the meeting of the groups in a very fresh way – a double-length set that's all original material – with titles that include "W Meets A", "Transparent Taylor", "Ink Worm", "Kerosene", "Conjugations" and "Dog Days". A very trippy album from the enigmatic Brother Ahh – aka Robert Northern, former member of Sun Ra's Arkestra, and also a lecturer on the east coast! This album's his first, originally issued on the Strata East label – and a spacey mixture of other-worldly sounds. The first long track on the album is entitled "Beyond Yourself (The Midnight Confession)", and features a group with Ahh on flutes and "natural" sounds, plus cello by Pat Dixon, percussion by Barbara Burton, and soprano voice by Barbara Grant. The track's a "sound journey in 7 parts" – floating across space with a mystical feel that slowly unfurls. The other long track on the set is "Love Piece", a tune in which Ah plays flute along with percussion by Max Roach and the M'Boom percussion ensemble – plus a 90-voice chorus, and a short rap by Roach. Very spiritual stuff! CD

James BrownJames Brown – Live At Home With His Bad Self ... CD
Polydor, 1969. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A rare lost treasure from James Brown – the full, unedited version of a live concert that was cut up and butchered for the Sex Machine album – presented here for the first time ever, with a huge amount of never-issued tunes! Sex Machine was one of those "fake" concert albums from James – some original live recordings, other studio tracks tricked out – and put together in a way that never really made much sense. This set is something completely different altogether – a James Brown concert from start to finish, complete with some wickedly sharp patter from the stage – and long tunes that really show his group hitting on all burners! The lineup of musicians include three drummers at once – Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Stars, and Melvin Parker – alongside Fred Wesley on trombone, Maceo Parker on alto, Jimmy Nolen on guitar, and Charles Sherrell on bass. James himself plays a bit of organ at instrumental moments – and tracks include the never-released "Lowdown Popcorn", "World", "Spinning Wheel", "Try Me", "I Got The Feelin/Lickin Stick Lickin Stick", and "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose" – next to versions of "There Was A Time", "Say It Loud", "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing", "Mother Popcorn", and "I Can't Stand Myself". Dave BrubeckJazz Impressions Of New York ... LP
Columbia, 1964. Near Mint- ... $29.99
New York's a mighty big place, but it's got a nicely intimate feel in this 60s set from the Dave Brubeck Quartet – one of the combo's overlooked gems from their years on Columbia! The music is all from the TV show Mr Broadway, but there's hardly a showtune feel to the set – and instead, the groove is almost in a hip Henry Mancini sort of mode, but delivered with a smaller combo feel. Tracks are somewhat shorter than the usual Brubeck outing, and balanced nicely between upbeat tracks and more sensitive ones – the former with some well-cut lines by Paul Desmond on alto sax, the latter often with a bit more piano from Dave. The rest of the group includes Gene Wright on bass and Joe Morello on drums – and titles include "Mr Broadway", "Broadway Bossa Nova", "Sixth Sense", "Something To Sing About", "Spring In Central Park", "Lonely Mr Broadway", "Winter Ballad", "Upstage Rhumba", and "Summer On The Sound". The first-ever album as a leader from Argentine bassist Adalberto Cevasco, but a set that comes after a long legacy in jazz at an international level – including work with guitarist John Abercrombie and saxophonist Gato Barbieri! You can hear echoes of the styles of both of those bigger names here, but the set's definitely got a flavor that's Cevasco's own – served up with shifting instrumentation from track to track, including vibes, flutes, bandoneon, and keyboards – plus vocals on two tracks – with that sort of down to earth sophistication that we love from the Buenos Aires scene. Titles include "A Los Que Quedaron", "Dos Modos De Ser", "Reencuentros No 2", "Cancio Para Barbara", and "Comparsa Color De Leon". LP, Vinyl record album

David Clayton ThomasDavid Clayton Thomas/Tequila Sunrise/David Clayton Thomas (with bonus track) ... CD
BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
A trio of solo albums from David Clayton Thomas – packaged here with a bonus track too! First up is the self-titled Columbia set David Clayton Thomas – great early solo work the singer who'd rose to fame as part of Blood Sweat & Tears – stepping out here with a sound that's maybe even more soul-based than his music with that famous group! The set features production from Bobby Colomby, of BS&T – and the groove is somewhat similar, but with less horns, and a lot more riffing guitar, keyboards, and other elements used to bring out some of the funkier currents in David's vocals! A few tracks were recorded in Memphis, with guitar from Steve Cropper – and the record even features some arrangements from Claus Ogerman and Jimmy Giuffre. The set includes a remake of of "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" – with a break at the start that's as funky as the original – and other titles include "We're All Meat From The Same Bone", "Sing A Song", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", "Once Burned", "Stealin In The Name Of The Lord", and a surprisingly great take on the Gram Parsons tune "She". Next is Tequila Sunrise – a fantastic solo album from David Clayton Thomas – and a set that still retains the amazing vocals he brought to Blood Sweat & Tears, but which has a completely different focus overall! Clayton-Thomas wrote almost all the songs on the set – and he works here with a tight core group that features William Smitty Smith on keyboards and arrangements, and plenty of guitar from Danny Kortchmar – both musicians who give the whole record a very strong, tight vibe that makes the whole thing feel like it comes from some hip early 70s group. Titles include "Friday The 13th Child", "My Song", "Last Time That She Cried", "The Face Of Man", "Nobody Calls Me Prophet", and "Fallin By Degrees". Next up is another self-titled album – David Clayton Thomas, from 1973 – with David himself handling arrangements, and doing a mighty nice job – getting plenty of sweet keyboards from William D Smith, and strong lead guitar from Domenic Troiano – both of whom echo the funky rock currents in the music. There's a bit of a Memphis rock vibe to the record at times – and titles include "Small Family", "Professor Longhair", "Harbor Lady", "Harmony Junction", and "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby". CD also features the bonus track "Some Hearts Get All The Breaks". CD

Universal (France), 1965. Used ... $13.99
A very lively set from Louis Armstrong – recorded in Paris in the mid 60s, at a time when Satch was at the height of his global popularity! The crowd is clearly very enthusiastic, and Armstrong responds with some great patter in between the tunes – really keeping things going with that warmly personal style he brought to the stage in later years. The group's a sextet with Tyree Glenn doing some great work on trombone, Eddie Shu on clarinet, and Billy Kyle on piano. Jewell Brown sings on 2 tracks on the set – and titles include "Tiger Rag", "Back Home Again In Indiana", "Hello Dolly", "On The Alamo", and "Lover Come Back To Me". CD

✨✧ Albert AylerBerlin, Lorrach, Paris, & Stockholm Revisited (Berlin/Stockholm & Lorrach/Paris) ... CD
Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1966. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A double-length package – one that brings together two previous Hat Art releases of live material – Berlin/Stockholm and Lorrach/Paris! The 2CD set features crucial European performances by Albert Ayler in the mid 60s – one that were issued until many years after the recording, but which has become one of the sharpest pictures of his genius at the time! The vibe is different than the Ayler albums for ESP – still very much in the same territory, but with this approach that's really reaching out with a deeply spiritual consciousness – an energy to embrace the whole history of jazz, both very old and very new – and re-form its entire ideology into a richly personal expression. Ayler's tremendous on tenor, but Don Ayler is often equally great on trumpet – and the unusual group features Michel Samson on violin, William Fowell on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums. The set features versions of "Truth Is Marching In", "Omega (Is The Alpha)", "Our Prayer – Bells" and "Infinite Spirit – Japan" from Stockholm, juxtaposed with differing performances of those titles in Berlin, plus the riveting closer "Ghosts – Bells", also from Berlin. The Lorrach/Paris recordings include really unique readings of "Bells", "Prophet", "Our Prayer/Spirits Rejoice", "Ghosts", "Truth Is Marching In", and "Spiritual Rebirth/Light In Darkness/Infinite Spirit". Polydor, 1971. Used ... $6.99
A lost treasure from James Brown & The JBs – a vintage live performance from the early 70s, and one that captures the group at the height of their powers! The format here is very similar to the excellent Revolution Of The Mind set – a totally funky, totally righteous live performance that has James and the group even more energized than in the studio – working with the kind of razor-sharp intensity that made them a legendary funk act – leaping from tune to tune with nary a break at all! Bobby Byrd acts as the MC, and joins James for a bit of vocals – and the group at this point still includes Bootsy Collins on bass, plus loads of great guitar from Catfish Collins, and Fred Wesley on trombone and Jabo Starks on drums. Dave Matthews handled some of the arrangements – and titles include "Soul Power", "Sex Machine", "Bewildered", "It's A New Day", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Brother Rapp", "Super Bad", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag/I Got You/I Got The Feelin". Cannonball AdderleyGreat Love Themes – The Cannonball Adderley Quintet With Strings x ... CD
Capitol (Japan), Mid 60s. Used ... $28.99
A nice once – certainly not as funky as some of Cannon's other work for Capitol, but with a dark edge that really makes it great! The core Cannonball quintet of Nat Adderley, Joe Zawinul, et al, is set up in string arrangements by Ray Ellis – a bit flowery at times, but in a way that makes for an edgey juxtaposition against the undeniably soulful groove of the quintet, even when they're playing ballads and love songs. Adderley's horn breaks out in these free solos, a bit like some of the Charlie Parker/Ralph Burns work from the early 50s – which makes for a very nice sound to our ears! Titles include "Morning Of The Carnival", "Stella By Starlight", "So In Love", "The Song Is You", and "The End Of A Love Affair". CD

A classic from Cannoball and producer-partner David Axelrod – truly great stuff and maybe even better than the Zodiac set Cannonball did for Capitol! The formula is similar to that one – with David Axelrod producing, electric keyboards by Hal Galper and George Duke, spacey solos by Cannonball and Nat Adderley, and some very hip recitations by Rick Holmes on love, sex, and the zodiac! Holmes is best known as the chappie who cut "Remember To Remember" years later with Roy Ayers – but this album's got a similar "wisdom and knowledge" feel that's pretty wonderful. Titles include "Aquarius: Humanity Plus", "Cancer: All Sides", "Leo: Rosebud", "Aries: Damn Right", "Gemini: Ecstasy", and "Virgo: For Pam". CD

BYG/Fuel 2000, 1969. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
Seminal work from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – recorded during their most creative period ever! The album was recorded live in October of 1969 – at a time when the group had pulled up roots and moved to France for a few years, bursting on the European scene with unique creativity that was not getting the recognition it deserved in their hometown of Chicago. The studio sets from this time are already the stuff of legend, and have thankfully made it back on reissue heavily the past few years – and this brilliant live set stands perfectly next to them – matching any of the LPs in the Great Black Music series on BYG/Actuel for sheer creative brilliance and soulful energy! Fontella Bass joins the group for a bit of vocals, and the 2CD set features 2 long tracks – "Bon Voyage" and "Oh Strange". CD

Arthur Brown's Kingdom ComeEternal Messenger – An Anthology 1970 to 1973 (Galactic Zoo Dossier/Kingdom Come/Journey/Jam/BBC Sessions/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
Polydor/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $44.99 65.99
All the albums from this mindblowing group – plus lots of bonus material too! First up is the legendary Galactic Zoo Dossier album – the start of a fantastic chapter for the legendary Arthur Brown – the first album issued with his Kingdom Come group, a combo who were even more insane than his Crazy World project of the late 60s! Brown is the quintessential front man here – singing in this really dynamic, dramatic way that's years ahead of its time – much more upfront than so many of the singers of the psych generation, and even the new hard rock vocalists too – at a level that makes music like this a great inspiration for so man styles to come! The instrumentation is as dynamic as the vocals, too – not prog jamming, but instead this really focused, fused blend of heavy drums, searing guitar, and organ – all sending things way way over the top. Titles include "Internal Messenger", "Night Of The Pigs", "Trouble", "Sunrise", "Brains", the "Galactic Zoo/Space Plucks" medley, "Creep", and "Creation". Kingdom Come is an album that bears the title of the larger group as a whole, but it's clear that mainman Arthur Brown is still very much at the helm – propelling the fantastic energy of the group almost like some carnival ringmaster – as his lyrics burst out with a power to match all the intensity of the group's guitar, organ, heavy bass, and drum interplay! There's a few moments that are nicely more complicated than before – almost as if Brown is using the new advances of the 70s to bring even more mania to his music – but without losing the rocking power of the previous records, nor giving way to too-jamming prog modes either. Titles include "Water", "City Melody", "Traffic Light Song", "Love Is A Spirit That Will Never Die", "The Teacher", and "The Experiment". Journey is an overlooked gem from the great Arthur Brown – not a set with his late 60s Crazy World group, but instead some great material done with Kingdom Come – a group who seem to be morphing with Brown into a really great space rock sort of combo! The keyboards and electronics here are stronger than before – not Tangerine Dream spacey, but fused with more hard-rocking modes that really take off and fly to the skies – so much so that Brown's vocals are often less a part of the sound than the group's amazing instrumental interplay – which could previously be shadowed a bit by his lead! The whole thing's great – a cool, compressed take on modes that so many others were trying to handle at the time – but maybe never this well. Titles include "Superficial Roadblocks", "Time Captives", "Triangles", "Conception", "Spirit Of Joy", "Come Alive", "Lost Time", and "Corpora Supercelestia". All three albums are presented with bonus tracks – and CD4 features Jam (The First Sessions) – the long jamming that produced the Kingdom Come sound before the first album – and CD5 features BBC sessions from 1971 and 1972! CD
(Comes with a great booklet, and a bonus poster too!)

Artifact iTi (Bauer/Nilssen Love/Lehn/Vandermark)Artifact iTi – Live In St Johann ... CD
Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy ... $4.99 13.99
A really unusual assortment of players – coming together here in a way that makes for an equally unusual sort of sound! The meeting of Chicago saxophonist Ken Vandermark and European players is hardly anything new – and drummer Paal Nilssen Love here is a frequent musical partner – but there's some really special sounds coming from both the trombone of Johannes Bauer and the electronics of Thomas Lehn – the last of whom improvises freely, and makes this bristling sort of energy next to the acoustic instruments in the group! The sounds within move between music that has the feel of more familiar free improvisation, and tunes that almost have an electro-acoustic sort of heft – and the album features one long performance, divided up into three parts. Atlantic StarrAlways – The Warner/Reprise Recordings 1987 to 1991 (All In The Name Of Love/We're Movin Up/Love Crazy/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Three full albums from Atlantic Starr – with lots of bonus tracks too! All In The Name Of Love has Atlantic Star at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". We're Moving Up is one of the last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". Love Crazy is a set that's got a nice change in groove from Atlantic Starr – a sound that's still got a lot of their best elements intact, but which also seems to bring on some of the best elements that were being introduced by the British scene too! Rhythms at points are maybe more in the Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield modes – which makes for some great tunes that really reinvigorate the group and update them for a new jack generation, while still holding onto the charms of the past. A few moments get more in a mellow quiet storm sound – all with the balance that made earlier Atlantic Starr albums classics – on titles that include "Love Crazy", "Hold On", "Masterpiece", "Girl Your Love's So Fine", "I Can't Wait", "If You Knew What's Good For You", and "Come Lover". 3CD package features all albums in tiny LP-styled jackets – with bonus tracks that include "One Lover At A Time (ext)", "Always (edit)", "Let The Sun Shine IN (ext rmx)", "All In The Name Of Love (single)", "My First Love (ext)", "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth ext mix)", "My First Love (7" edit)", and "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth underground mix)". Claire's the wife of drummer Chuck Austin, and as far as we know, this classic set of west coast vocal jazz is the only album she ever cut. The set features spare backing by a quintet – with Barney Kessel, Stan Wrightsman, Shelly Manne, Morty Corb, and Bob Scobey – and the overall feeling is nice and moody. Light In The Attic, Late 60s. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
One of the greatest and most historically important compilations ever put together by our friends at Light In The Attic – the first ever (!!!) anthology devoted to Stax sax great Charles "Packy" Axton! Packy was a founding member of the Mar-Keys and a cat who played with the best of them – Steve Cropper, Booker T, Teenie Hodges, Donald "Duck" Dunn and many more – all of whom can be heard on this mindblowing set of benchmark vocal and instrumental singles from the mid 60s – truly the blueprint material for the great Stax and all around Memphis soul to come! It features singles cut for labels such as USA, Bar, Hollywood and Pure Soul – soul/R&B vocal numbers and proto-funky instrumentals. Amazing, amazing stuff recorded at Royal and Ardent Studios with some of the greatest soul music players to ever come together – so highly recommended! Includes "Holiday Cheer", "Bullseye", "Hung Over", "I'll Always Love" and "Late Late Party" by The Martinis, "No Ending" and "No Love Have I" by Stacy Lane, "House Full Of Rooms", "Out Of Control" and "I'm A Fool (In Love)" by LH & The Memphis Sounds, "Stone Fox", "Hip Pocket" and "Greasy Pumpkin" by The Pac-Keys, and "Hole In The Wall" by The Packers. 17 tracks in all – treated beautifully by team LITA – with a thick booklet of notes (by Andria Lisle) and full of vintage photos of the players, shots of the inner labels of the original singles, details for each track and more. Aziza (Dave Holland/Chris Potter/Lionel Loueke/Eric Harland)Aziza ... LP
Dare 2, 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 25.99
A really unusual group, with a sound that's certainly the sum of its wonderful parts – but also different in ways you might not expect! The lineup is excellent – the legendary Dave Holland on bass, Lionel Loueke on guitar, Chris Potter on tenor and soprano sax, and Eric Harland on drums – all working together in these very groovy styles that seem to have Holland pulling a lot more bold basslines than usual – almost as if he's using an electric version of the instrument, although it appears to just be an acoustic with a pickup! There's a soulful vibe to the record that you might not expect – shades of color and tone that are maybe closest to Loueke's music, but also very different than his own records – and Potter's really great in this setting, and blows with these open lines that are still as angular and sharp as usual, but maybe a bit warmer too. Titles include "Blue Sufi", "Aziza Dance", "Summer 15", "Walkin The Walk", and "Finding The Light". LP, Vinyl record album

Luis BacalovLa Strega In Amore ... CD
CAM/Sugar (Italy), 1966. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A wonderful early soundtrack from Luis Bacalov – much jazzier than some of his later work, with a vibe that's right up there with some of the more jazz-based work of the Italian scene in the earlier part of the 60s! There's a cool wordless vocal from Nora Orlandi on a few tracks, and nice use of flute, piano, and percussion throughout – varied nicely, but with a really strong song-based sort of approach – so that the album's not entirely jazz in structure, but not far off either! Bacalov's always been great at more dramatic moments, but it's great to hear him working in a style like this – and there's a nice sense of variety on the record, which really keeps things interesting – especially as a few more guitar-based numbers move in to the mix. The sound gets a bit more tense at the end, but is still nice and spare – and titles include "La Strega In Amore", "Aura", "Due Donna Un Enigma", "Seduzione Diabolica", "Danza Greca", "Bruciata Viva", and "Consuleo". Ace (UK), 1950s/1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Rare Bacharach galore – an assortment of under-reissued tracks all penned by the mighty Burt – most of which are from the heyday of 60s uptown soul! Despite the 1952 in the date range on the title, almost all the tunes here are from the mid 60s – that time when Bacharach was writing new tunes like a demon, and getting most of them recorded by a range of great talents on the New York scene. Singers are a good mix of soul, pop, rock, and vocal artists – and although the material was done for a variety of different labels, there's a relatively unified feel – thanks to that snapping syncopation that Burt always brought to work like this. CD features 26 titles in all – including "How About" by Della Reese, "Third Window From The Right" by Dean Barlow, "I Wake Up Crying" by Del Shannon, "I Looked For You" by Charlie Gracie, "That's Not The Answer" by Vi Velasco, "More Time To Be With You" by Brook Benton, "Three Friends" by The Turbans, "Move It On The Backbeat" by Burt & The Backbeats, "You're Telling Our Secrets" by Dee Clark, "Thirty Miles Of Railroad Track" by The Hammond Brothers, "The Story Of My Life" by Big Al Downing, "Made In Paris" by Trini Lopez, "Rain From The Skies" by Adam Wade, and "True Love Never Runs Smooth" by Don & Juan. A rare one from 60s Brazil – and a really great small combo bossa session with some very unusual instrumentation! At their core, the Balona group seem to be a bossa piano trio – but many tracks here have a little "something else" – vibes, electric guitar, or trumpet – often used sparingly but with enough punch to really help shade in the sound of the tunes, even with a few jagged notes. A few numbers have harmony vocals – ala Tamba Trio, but perhaps a bit less modern – and the overall sound is pretty darn great! Wonderful work from two players who've just gotten better and better over the decades – both musicians who've made a huge impression from the late 70s onward, but who also continue to grow and refine their ideas as the years go on! This set features beautiful duets recorded at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, in 2009 – with Bang on violin and thumb piano, and William Parker on bass, plus a bit of shakuhashi and dousn gouni as well. Both players handle strings at a level that's far different than most of their contemporaries or influences – and have this sublimely spiritual style that's often a bit exotic too – but never in the sort of easier ways of Bang's Vietnam-related projects. Instead there's a very freely creative spirit as both players come together – finding a unique voice that's extremely moving, and never too heavy-handed – a huge reminder of why we love them both so much. Titles include "Bronx Aborigines", "Eternal Planet", "Buddha's Joy", "Medicine Buddha", and "Sky Song". CD

Laurent Bardianne & Tigre D'Eau DouceLove Is Everywhere ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 36.99
A fresh set of contemporary soul jazz from French tenorist Laurent Bardianne – a jazz musician, but one with a tie to other stylistic communities – which you can hear in the record from the very first note! The quintet has a familiar lineup that includes Hammond B3, bass, drums, and percussion – the last from Roger Raspail – but the sound is often very different than the standard grooves you'd expect from such a setting, partly because the presence of Raspail does a nice job of complicating things in the rhythm department, as does the presence of a bassist next to any basslines that might be produced by the organ! Bardianne gets plenty of space to solo out front – often in a way that really matches the changed-up rhythms – and titles include "Kinshasa", "Cabane", "Song Dong Hee", "Apaches", "Insolente", "Everlasting Child", and "Love Is Everywhere" – plus the track "Star 5", which features a guest vocal appearance from Anthony Joseph. One of the few rare albums on the Maple label – a 70s imprint that's known for some incredible funk and soul! Despite the title, the set's a record that sounds a lot more down-home than uptown – thanks to hard-wailing vocals from Gloria Barnes herself, and a nicely rough-edged quality to the instrumentation overall – supposedly handled by Lee Moses and The Ohio Players – the latter of whom wrote a few of the songs too! The album's one of the few on Maple – and in a way, it's almost a female soul counterpart to the Lee Moses record on the same label – done in a similar mix of rootsy modes and east coast indie soul – occasionally sweet at points, but mostly deep soul overall. Sounds like the 60s – and like a fair bit of work on British labels from the 80s, like El Records or Compact. These guys lean on the cheesier elements of 60s pop – and although they're certainly missing a bit of the needed soul and emotion in their vocals (a bit too "ironic"), they more than make up for it with some nice backings, especially on the vibes and organ parts. John Barry/Elizabeth TaylorElizabeth Taylor In London ... LP
Colpix, 1963. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A weird little record from John Barry – the soundtrack to a 1963 television special recorded by Elizabeth Taylor at the height of her early popularity, and featuring Taylor reciting a variety of poems and speeches over music by Barry! There's a relatively high concept feel to the album – as Barry's backings are fairly string-laden and serious, penned to match the mood of Taylor's presentation of material written by William Wordsworth, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, William Pitt, Winston Churchill, and Queen Victoria. And although Taylor speaks on about half the record, the best tracks here are actually the instrumental ones – which have more of the depth of Barry's serious soundtrack work from the time, and manage to have their own sense of presence apart from the star quality of Liz on the set. Arrangements are by Johnnie Spence, and titles include "Elizabeth", "London Theme Jazz Waltz", "Queen Elizabeth At Tilbury", "Queen Victoria", "English Garden", "The Fire Of London", "Lovers & Browning", and "London At Dawn". Disco grooves, but with a definite difference – given that Jo Bisso had previously worked on the Parisian club scene, and brings a special flourish to this American album from the late 70s! Jo sings lead vocals on the side-long "Love Somebody" – a tune that builds strongly as Bisso gets answered by a trio of lovely ladies who really brighten up the sound – and who then seem to take over even more on the flipside working with singer Claudia Ferrari. This second side is even better than the first – as things get a bit more spare and stripped-down – snaking out on the smooth stepper "Your Love", getting some funky moogy touches on the P&P-like "Let's Keep It Together", and warming up on the mellow disco number "Thank You Baby". Special bonus – CD features a fifth track – not titled or credited at all! CD

Brian Blade's a drummer, but the set is definitely the work of a warm fellowship in jazz – a well-matched group of players that includes Myron Walden on alto, Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano, John Cowherd on acoustic piano and Wurlitzer, and Christopher Thomas on bass – all working through mostly original material by Blade that has this slow burn and soulful sparkle – often mellow, but without every being too laidback – and produced by Daniel Lanois with a really great overall sense of sound. A really fantastic album from the great Lo Borges – and proof of that long-running adage about Brazilian singers – they never falter as they age, and most seem to be able to hold onto all that made them great in the first place – at a level that's very different from artists on the Anglo side of the spectrum! Lo first rose to prominence as part of the "corner club" of Milton Nascimento – and his songwriting really helped propel Nascimento in the 70s, and was also the start of a great run of fantastic, but oft-overlooked (at least on our shores) records by Borges himself – a sublime legacy that's really continued here, in a set of well-penned songs that sparkle with all the many charms of Lo's key records in the 70s. ✨✧ Lo BorgesLo Borges (1972) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Polysom (Brazil), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 50.99
An incredible album from Lo Borges – one of the best singer/songwriters on the Brazilian scene of the 70s! Borges first burst into the spotlight for his work on the Club Da Esquina album by Milton Nascimento – and his work as part of Milton's "corner club" really helped shape the style of the more famous singer. Yet Borges is almost an equally great talent on his own – with a soaring, soulful approach that's every bit as great as the best Nascimento material from the period – and recorded in a wonderfully similar spirit! The sound here is completely sublime right from the start – music that moves us, even if we can't understand the language of the lyrics – like some of the best work by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. There's maybe a bit more guitar than on some of the Milton Nascimento work of the period – but used in a fuzzy way that slides in nicely with some of the jazzy phrasing of the instrumentation – which is delivered with help from key contemporaries who include Beto Guedes, Nelson Angelo, Toninho Horta, and Tenorio Jr. The songwriting is amazing – and titles include "Cancao Postal", "Voce Fica Melhor Assim", "Nao Foi Nada", "Calibre", "Faca Seu Jogo", "Toda Essa Agua", "Pensa Voce", "Como O Machando", and "Aos Baroes". The great Lo Borges first rose to fame as part of Milton Nascimento's corner club in the early 70s – and damn, if he doesn't still sound great after all of these years – maybe even more true to his roots than Milton in more recent recordings! Lo's got a hell of a way with a tune, and he works here with his brother Marcio, another member of the old corner club – on songs that are really well-penned, and have this captivating quality even if you can't understand the language – maybe at a level that wants you to learn Portuguese, just so you can unlock the magic of the way the words go together! As with much of Borges' recordings in recent decades, the approach is rock-based, but in an understated way – completely unique, and really transcendent – on titles that include "Terra Da Gado", "Muito Alem Do Fim", "Muito Querida", "Copo Cheio", "Vida Ribeirao", and "Rainha". Modern Harmonic, 1969. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Funky organ jazz from a very unlikely source – a Texas-made porno from 1969, and a movie that dared ask the question "Do prostitutes make good wives?" The music is unusual in that it's actually pretty darn good – nice small combo jazz, often with a good current of funk in the mix – surprisingly still around after all these years, on audio tapes that stand where no extant copy of the film remains! The sound is nice and raw – heavy drums, plenty of Hammond, and some trumpet solos too – all with a feel that's maybe more like a gem from the contemporary funk underground, although a lot grittier overall! Plus, most tracks are nice and long – clearly scored for extended sex scenes – which is a real rarity for music like this of the time, usually served up on the short side of a funky 45. The set begins with the trailer-like "Don't Miss The Party Girls" – then soars into the 15 minute "Nikki & The College Boys", and the 23 minute "Party Scene/Strip Poker" – plus a version of the James Brown tune "I Got The Feelin". The sound is even more groundbreaking than before – moving well beyond jazz, although there's plenty of that in the mix too – to reflect Branch's connection to so many different musical communities in the contemporary scene! Jaimie brings a lot of anger and frustration at the current political situation into the music – a great reminder that with the right focus, jazz can be used for so many different cultural aims – especially when handled this well, in a lineup that features Jaimie on trumpet, electronics, and a bit of voice – with Lester St Louis on cello and percussion, Jason Ajemian on bass and percussion, and Chad Taylor on drums, mbira, and xylophone. The record also features guest work from Ben Lamar Gay and Marvin Tate on voice, Matt Schneider on 12 string guitar, and Dan Bitney on percussion and synth – and titles include "Prayer For Amerikkka (parts 1 & 2)", "Lesterlude", "Love Song", "Simple Silver Surfer", "Bird Dogs Of Paradise", "Nuevo Roquero Estereo", and "Twentey Three N Me Jupiter Redux". International Anthem, 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 36.99 On October 8, 2021
Trumpeter Jaimie Branch has been giving us great music for a number of years – but honestly, she really knocks it out of the park on this live set – a record that's even more amazing than her previous two efforts with a similar title! The set's a double-length performance – and Branch's trumpet is really just a small part of the sound – as the quartet work together in these really amazing ways – with a well-blended sound that moves into all this sonic territory way more than familiar jazz – thanks to brilliant contributions from Chad Taylor on drums and mbira, Lester St Louis on cello and cymbal, and Jason Ajemian on bass – all players who really move around a lot, shift the sound of their instruments, and step into the brilliantly creative territory opened up by the leader! Titles include "Prayer For Amerikka (parts 1 & 2)", "Twenty Three N Me (Jupiter redux)", "Reflections On A Broken Sea", "Birds Of Paradise", "Leaves Of Glass", "The Storm", "Walzer", "Sun Tines", and "Theme 001". Willem Breuker KollektiefA Paris/Summer Music ... CD
Marge (France), 1978. Used ... $9.99
A great Parisian recording from the legendary Willem Breuker – pulled from the most inventive years of his legendary group of Dutch avant musicians! The set captures the maestro at his best – working with a classic lineup of the Kollektief that includes Leo Cuypers on piano and vocals, Maarten Van Norden on saxes, Boy Raayamkers on trumpet, and some great drum work from Rob Verdurmen – all holding together beautifully with the offbeat mix of modern and traditional elements that Breuker used in his music. The sound of the album is surprisingly strong at times – especially on the straighter tracks, which groove along in a rhythmic mode, then break out for some solos that really go to town – and the whole thing's also handled with a fair degree of wit, as you'd expect from Breuker. Titles include "Condizione Niente", "Summer Music", "Wake Up", and "Parabasis". CD

Trina BroussardInside My Love ... CD
Expansion (UK), Late 90s/2008. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
The long-overdue release of Inside My Love – a sublime little set recorded by Trina Broussard in the late 90s – originally planned for the So-So Def label, but never properly issued at the time! The album's years ahead of most soul of the time – a great precursor to the Neo Soul explosion that major labels would finally get behind in the 21st Century, but which still left them scratching their heads back in the 90s – and failing to get music this great out to the market. Thankfully, Expansion have helped fix a decade-old mistake – and they're letting Trina's warmly soulful sound sparkle beautifully with this well-done reissue. Broussard's got a wonderfully classy approach to her music – one that's been appreciated in subsequent releases, but which comes through even more clearly here – a great sense of poise that's almost classic in a Phyllis Hyman sort of way. Titles include "Losing My Mind", "Why Do I Feel So Sad", "All I Need Is You", "All Night Long", "Not Around", "Remember Me", "Sailing", "Say You Really Love", and "Inside My Love". CD also features the bonus track "It's Not Really Christmas". CD

Aaron Parnell BrownTin Man ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Aaron Parnell Brown's no tin man here – as the record has a rock-solid sound from the very first note, and a fresh approach that really sets Brown apart from so many male soul singers in the contemporary underground! Aaron's got this laidback vibe in his music – a deeply soulful approach that flows at its own pace, and doesn't need to step out sharply, and knock you over the head – instead kind of sliding into each track with gentle care, then letting things build up as the warm vocals glow nicely over the course of the record. That doesn't mean that things are sloppy or sleepy at all – just carefully confident to never burn the fire too brightly at one point – and instead go for this slow burn that really keeps the album strong throughout. Titles include "Bleed Me Dry", "Can't Stop", "Just Leave", "Somewhere Around", "Changes", "Everlasting Light", "I Believe In You", and "We All Fall In Love Sometimes". CD

Peabo Bryson & Roberta FlackBorn To Love ... LP
Capitol, 1983. Near Mint- ... $4.99
The beautiful full scale duets set from Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack – a record that's no doubt defined by it's biggest hit – but the rest is just as great! Born To Love kicks off with "Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You" – a song that's doubtlessly one of the most inescapable slow dance classics ever – and if its ubiquity overshadows the rest of the record, that's not because it's any less excellent! Peabo's affectionate style is in top form here, and Roberta is such a perfect duet partner – with plenty of lead moments of her own. It definitely feels like a perfectly balanced partnership. The record's got some lovely slow jams on par with the aforementioned pop soul standard, plus some great ones that up the tempo a little bit. Other titles include "Blame It On Me", "Born To Love", "Heaven Above Me", "Comin' Alive", "Can We Find Love Again", "You're Looking Like Love To Me" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

A laidback quintet date from Gary Burton – one that almost returns us to the warm hues of his best early work in the 60s! The record's awash in Burton's famous tone on the vibes – a very color-sensitive approach to the instrument that resonates nicely amidst a setting that includes piano from Fred Hersch, guitar from John Scofield, bass from John Patitucci, and drums from Peter Erskine. The tracks are all taken at a mellow or midtempo pace, and Burton's never too arch-modern in his approach – almost soulfully swinging at times, on tracks that include "Poinciana", "Depk", "Tenderly", "If I Were A Bell", "For All We Know", and "Japanese Waltz". Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good- ... $4.99
Ahhhh for the days when they made records like these – lush, rich instrumental sessions with an evocative "piano in the next apartment" feel! Joe Buskin's work on the keys is moody, mellow, and perfectly cast in some full string arrangements handled by Glenn Osser and himself – all to paint a rich tonal picture of ladies loved, ladies lost, and ladies imagined! The tunes are familiar, but transformed by the mellow workings of Bushkin on the keys – and shaded in wonderfully by the larger arrangements – full, but never in the ways of the keys, and with just the right amount of emotion to push the mood without pushing it over the top. Nice 1968 recordings of works by Cage and Lukas Foss. The Cage "Concerto For Prepared Piano" is performed by Yuji Takahashi on a prepared piano, as the main soloist with a larger ensemble. The sound is as you'd imagine from Cage's prepared piano stuff, with lots of cool off-kilter piano lines. Foss' "Baroque Variations" is performed by a cool little ensemble that includes both traditional instruments and modern ones like electric guitar, piano, and organ. They get a sound that's pretty cool, and the "variations" are interpretations of works by Handel, Scarlatti, and Bach. LP, Vinyl record album

Terry CallierWhat Color Is Love ... LP
Cadet/Verve, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Possibly the greatest album ever by the legendary Chicago soul singer Terry Callier! Terry's rich mellow voice is mixed with superb arrangements from the Cadet studio team, with Charles Stepney at the head, and the result is completely sublime. The songs are longer than on earlier albums – and spun out with a complex groove that mixes equal parts of jazz, folk, and soul with the soaring spiritual vibe that was running through the Chicago scene at the time. The first side alone is the stuff that legends are made of – with classic tracks like "Dancing Girl", "What Color is Love", and "You Goin' Miss Your Candyman" all in a row, sewn together in a wash of love, soul, and emotion that you'd be hard pressed to find on any other album from the time. Other tracks include "I'd Rather Be With You", "Just As Long As We're In Love", and "You Don't Care" – and the whole album's a masterpiece beyond compare! LP, Vinyl record album

Captain Sky followed very firmly in the P-Funk footsteps – using lots of bass and rocking rhythms to carve out a space-themed groove that had plenty of cool touches! And more than that, the Captain's style was equally well suited to the emerging 80s groove era – and worked well with a nice dose of slight electric touches – not totally wikki-wikki, but certainly setting the stage for that sound! John CarpenterHalloween (2018 soundtrack) ... CD
Sacred Bones, 2018. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
The legendary John Carpenter first made his mark with Halloween – both as a director, and as a composer – the second a role for which he's finally gotten the attention he deserved! The original Halloween soundtrack was a masterpiece in understatement – spare instrumentation, often electric and with keyboards – and a real contrast to both the fuller orchestrations and the smaller funk work that was being done earlier in the 70s. Carpenter's approach set the tone for generations to come – and here, he goes back to the source – working with two younger musicians on music for the 2018 version of the film, which still holds on to some of his earlier keyboard elements, but also opens up a wider sonic palette too. At some level, the shift is almost one that reflects the change in technology – you can now do an awful lot with just a little bit of equipment – yet even amidst that change, Carpenter still hews to his best sense of minimalism – creating these dark murky corners beyond the range of sonic comprehension at points – then going for more of the full-on numbers that have always been his stock in trade. Titles include "Michael Kills", "Halloween Theme", "Say Something", "Ray's Goodbye", "The Shape Hunts Allyson", "The Shape Burns", and "The Grind". CD

Jimmy Carroll/Red CampSpeed the Parting Guest/Hot-Tempered Clavichord ... CD
Cook, Mid 50s. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
Great work from the legendary Cook label – a full album that combines two earlier 10" albums of experimental sounds! First up is Speed The Parting Guest, a wonderful combination of music and sound effects – very similar to some of the bigger label work from artists like Jack Fascinato or Dean Elliott over at Capitol Records in the late 50s, but an even more sonically-sensitive session done for the smaller Cook imprint! Jimmy Carroll leads an assortment of vibes, bells, harps, toys, percussion, and other odd instruments – all in a weird and playful mix of melodies that almost come across like mini-cartoons in sound! There's not much in the way of larger or conventional instrumentation – which makes Jimmy's work even different than bigger label experiments like this – and the recording quality from Cook really makes all the odd sounds come through with great clarity! Titles include "Happy Little Woodpile", "Tinkle Tinkle Little Bell", "Speed The Parting Guest", and "Hong Kong Local". Next up is The Hot Tempered Clavichord – a session that features mostly clavichord musings from Red Camp – more of a rootsy pianist on other records, but working here on an electrified clavichord – which is a bit like an electric harpsichord in sound, only rougher! The tracks are these cool electric boogie-woogie numbers – and include "Ragout", "Blues In Minore", and "The One I Love". CD

One of those records that just makes us say "wow" right from the very first note – a perfect showcase for all musicians involved, and a really mighty meeting of the creative minds! We've really loved the strong return to form that Matthew Shipp has given us on piano in recent years – and of course, the basswork of William Parker is always tremendous – but they both somehow rise even more to the top alongside the drums of Gerald Cleaver and tenor, trumpet, and flute of Daniel Carter – in a session that's wonderfully spiritual, very rhythmic, and often quite straight at times! There's a balance between the avant impulses of the players and the collective action of the group – almost recalling the loft jazz years, but more contemporarily righteous too – on titles that include "Majestic Travel Agency", "Scintillate", and "Ear-Regularities". A fantastic set of exotica from the legendary percussionist Chaino – a set that was originally billed as a record to set free the passions of reluctant lovers in the postwar years – but which has a much deeper vibe than that! The percussion is great throughout – lots of congas and other percussion work, mostly used in a very spare setting – so that the drums are bringing forth both rhythmic and melodic elements, as they're topped with occasional vocal calls, whistles, and other spare elements – usually done in very stark ways amidst the echoey production setting of the album – leaving everything in strong contrast to the percussion as the set progresses, and the passions are unbridled! Edsel (UK), 1980s. New Copy 7CD ... $64.99 69.99
A huge batch of work from Change – all the group's classic albums from the 80s, plus some great work from later years too – all with bonus tracks added to most of the records! First up is Glow Of Love – the classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. Next is Miracles – a brilliant second set from Change – working here without Luther Vandross on lead vocals, but hardly missing a beat at all! As before, the basslines are at the core of the set – a sweet stripped-down approach that brings even more focus onto the bottom of the groove for early 80s dancefloors – with loads of numbers that step along in a really groovy mode – one quite far from the cliches of disco, and inflected by loads of jazzy elements that keep things fresh over the years! Vocals are by James Robinson – previously with Lonnie Liston Smith – Diva Gray, and Jocelyn Shaw. Sharing Your Love is sweet modern soul from this great group – one of the brightest points in major label soul during the early 80s! Change, ironically, is a group that went through a number of line-up changes, even in their prime – with the tight, clubby, yet genuinely soulful production a constant. This record is made all the better for the beautifully soulful dual lead vocals of James Robinson and Deborah Cooper. The tracks have deeply layered live instrumentation – keyboards, guitar, percussion, horns and strings – blended seamlessly with early 80s production touches. This Is Your Love is an overlooked set from Change – a record that possibly wasn't as hit-worthy as some of their previous efforts – yet one that still had the group very much at the top of their game! By this point, Change had really evolved past being just a studio project, into a rock-solid soul group with a definite ear for a groove – particularly the tight, lean sort of rhythms that percolated in the post-Chic era – making a perfect fit for the slightly jazzy production of the record. Bassbits and beats drive most of the rhythms, but there's still a nice degree of warmth – and vocals are handled by Deborah Cooper, James Robinson, Rick Brennan, and Timmy Allen – who each seem to get their moment in the spotlight, furthering the well-rounded sound of the record. Next is Change Of Heart – a game-changing album from Change – a real breakthrough for the early 80s international soul combo! Change Of Heart has some great production by Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis – and on top of that, it's perhaps the best set of songs the group had recorded to to date. Jam/Lewis wrote half the tunes and produced most of the album, which is front-loaded with some of the best of them. Turn On Your Radio is not nearly as well-known as their first few hits, but still in that all-solid approach to the groove that was the Change trademark during the early 80s! The sound is a bit more stripped down than before – tight beats and keyboards, mostly in a mellow to midtempo mode – all topped with vocals from male and female members of the group! Change still have a great way with a hook here – an approach to soul that's tight and professional, yet not nearly as cloying as some of the chart-climbing acts of their generation. And as before, the keyboards are almost as great as the vocals – with slight jazzy inflections that warm up the tunes nicely! Last up is Love 4 Love – a 2018 comeback for Change – still sounding great all these many years later, but in a slightly different way! The balance between all elements here is fantastic – as the music has all the best parts of the group's earlier music, but also updates the sound a bit – in the way that a combo like Incognito or Brand New Heavies were updating older soul music back in the 90s, by grabbing all the strongest parts of the past, and fusing them into a fresh lean groove. The songs are upbeat, positive, and full of the kind of catchy hooks that Change always did so well! Box set features 78 tracks in all – with bonus tracks added to most albums! CD

With a cover like that, it's easy to see where the fantasy in the title is going – certainly not into the musky world of swords and sorcery, and instead into the realm of slinky sounds that are right at home in the Italian sound library world of the 70s! The music here has all the warm erotic touches of some of the better-known soundtrack material from the time – put together by Gianfranco Reverberi, who you might know from some of his crossover prog classics – but delivered with a lean instrumental mode that often has a keyboard as the lead instrument, over slow-stepping basslines and some nice washes of strings used in just the right way. Some tunes have a gentle funk vibe, others are sweetly sexy – and the set also features versions of some bigger hits from the time, with titles that include "Daniel", "Sylvia's Mother", "Fire Shadows In The Sunset", "Vincent", "She Was Not An Angel", "E Poi", "Quel Che Non Saprei Dirti Mai A Parole", and "Closed In A Drugstore". Classic work from Stella Chiweshe – a set that gave mbira player Stella Chiweshe much wider exposure than some of her previous records, and a nicely bold sound to match! Stella sings lead vocals, and handles her instrument with amazing dexterity – and also uses a few other percussion instruments too – alongside addition mbira, two marimbas, bass, and drums – almost always moving at a nicely rhythmic clip that really pushes the music forward! The album's never too overproduced – still nicely shy of some of the crossover modes of the growing world music generation – but it does have a fuller quality than some of Chiweshe's earliest music, in part because she's an even more powerful vocalist. Natalie ColeInseparable ... LP
Capitol, 1975. Very Good ... $4.99
Natalie Cole's stunning debut for Capitol Records in the mid 70s – a real surprise, and a set that should have had the singer blossoming even more than she did at the time! As with some of the other Capitol soul sessions of the time, the album's done very firmly under the guidance of Charles Jackson and Marvin Yancey – a pair who give Natalie just the right sort of backing to launch her career – a sound that's full and rich, deeply sophisticated – but also still plenty soulful, almost in the mode of some of Minnie Riperton's work at the time. Given the pair's Chicago roots – and the arrangement help from Richard Evans – that comparison is no surprise, and Natalie rises to the occasion nicely. Titles are all originals too – and include "Needing You", "Joey", "I Can't Say No", "Something For Nothing", "I Love Him So Much", "You", "Your Face Stays On My Mind", and the huge hit "This Will Be". Bill ColemanJazz In Paris – From Boogie To Funk ... CD
Universal (France), 1960. Used ... $11.99
Trumpeter Bill Coleman was one of many American players that made their home in Paris during the postwar years – and like many of his contemporaries on the scene, he cut some of his finest work in the city's rich sympathetic scene. This album's probably Coleman's finest – and it has a moody laidback sound that reminds us of the best albums on the Prestige Swingville label from the early 60s. No surprise that Coleman's got some strong backing by some of the Prestige crowd – including US jazz talents like Budd Johnson on tenor, Patti Brown on piano, Les Spann on guitar, and Quentin Jackson on trombone. The style of the set is a mixture of swing and hardbop – but the open-endedness of some of the tracks goes way past any easy marks that you might put on the music, pushing it into the full range of styles promised by the title. Titles include "Bill, Budd, & Butter", "Afromotive In Blue", "From Boogie To Funk (parts 1 & 2)", and "Colemanology". CD

ColoursColours ... CD
Dot/World Psychedelia (Korea), 1968. New Copy ... $4.99
One of the best American psyche albums we've heard from the late 60s – a near-perfect record that's head and shoulders above the rough experimentation of most other groups from the period! Colours spell their name with a definite British twist, and there's clearly a Beatles influence going on here – a sound that's almost pre-Sgt Peppers, but which has wonderfully complicated time changes, vocal parts, and production techniques that must have cost a pretty penny to such a little-known group! Horns and strings are arranged by Dave Roberts, and handled with a sensitivity that almost matches The Zombies' best at times – and the tunes themselves are a fresh variety of odd themes, including one number about robbing a liquor store. Titles include "Brother Lou's Love Colony", "Bad Day At Black Rock Baby", "Love Heals", "Rather Be Me", "I'm Leaving", "Cataleptic", "Don't You Realize", and "Lovin". CD

✨✧ Alice ColtraneWorld Spirituality Classics Vol 1 – The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda (with bonus download) ... LP
Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John ColtraneJohn Coltrane Live In Paris – 17 Novembre 1962 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1962. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Wonderful live work from the John Coltrane Quartet – tracks recorded in Paris during a famous 1962 European tour – and material that we're not sure we've seen anywhere else! The group here is, of course, that masterful lineup of Coltrane on tenor and soprano saxophone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – really stretching out on long tracks that are full of modal energy, emphasized very strongly by Tyner and Garrison – and which have these beautiful solos from John that are very exploratory in both tone and phrasing, but which still hang more on the inside edge of the spectrum than his live work from a few years later. The set features a spoken introduction from Norman Granz – then moves into a 22 minute take on "Impressions", a 23 minute version of "My Favorite Things", and a 15 minut reading of "Mr PC" – plus a shorter, soulful ballad reading of "Everytime We Say Goodbye". John ColtraneLove Supreme ... CD
Impulse/GRP, 1964. Used ... $4.99
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for the album – which is a full-length suite of spiritual expression, one that gives even greater focus and message to Coltrane's long-spiralling style of soloing on the tenor sax! The group here is the classic quartet – McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – taking Trane up to the heavens on waves of modal energy, but also holding his spirit closer to the planet than on some of later, more outside performances. There's a slight bit of vocalization on the record – that chanted energy that imbues the set with so much love – and movements include "Acknowledgement", "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm". CD

Tino ContrerasLa Noche De Los Dias ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
A brilliant late statement from Tino Contreras – the legendary Mexican drummer who's been part of the jazz scene in Mexico City for decades – and who can still give the world wonderfully vibrant music like this! There's a deeply spiritual vibe to the record – a sound that's like some of Tino's most far-reaching work of the late 70s – and the group here features added percussion alongside piano, organ, saxes, and guitar – both acoustic and electric, which creates a great bridge in the sense of sound – as the music swirls together with a sense of majesty that almost recalls the best Latin America projects of Gato Barbieri on Impulse Records. All tunes are originals by Contreras, delivered with a fantastic spirit by the group – and titles include "Mascaras Blues", "Nina Yahel", "El Sacrificio", "Al Amanecer", and "Malinche". ControllersFor The Love Of My Woman ... CD
MCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1987. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
An overlooked gem from The Controllers – one issued a bit late to be part of the classic wave of group soul, but a set that's still overflowing with really old school harmonies! The Controllers really have a wonderful way of putting over a ballad – letting things build slow and mellow, trading lead parts and harmonies together in a way that really moves the message forward, while never overdoing things too much in search of a hook. And even when the instrumentation is contemporary, it never gets in the way of the vocals – and almost always lays back once the lyrics come in, even on the album's few groovers. Titles include "For The Love Of My Woman", "My Secret Fantasy", "Love Is On Our Side", "Play Time", "Sleeping Alone", "Knocking At Your Door", and "No One's Ever Loved Me More". CD

Theo CrokerEscape Velocity (180 gram blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Okeh/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 2016. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
Trumpeter Theo Croker definitely hits escape velocity here – using electric touches to push his music deep into the cosmos, but all while still holding onto the earthy soul at the core! Theo blows straight trumpet sometimes, and processes his horn at others – but never with any sense of gimmick or cheap trick, and always as part of an instrumental vision that has him perfectly fitting in alongside the album's great Fender Rhodes, moog, and other keyboards from Michael King – whose work really helps drive the record too! Yet the whole thing isn't familiar fusion, or a rehash of older modes from Miles, Jon Hassell, or others of older generations – and instead Croker really finds himself here – and draws on help from other strong players who include Irwin Hall on alto and flute, and Ben Eunson on electric guitar. Titles include "Transcend", "This Could Be", "In Orbit", "We Can't Breathe", "Love From The Sun", "Changes", "Rahspect", "The Right Time", and "No Escape From Bliss". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stanley CrouchKansas City Lightning – The Rise & Times Of Charlie Parker ... Book
Harper Perennial, 2013. New Copy ... $4.99 16.99
The story of Charlie Parker is often draped in hyperbole and exaggeration – which is why it's extra great that this biography is handled by Stanley Crouch – one of the few writers we could trust to get past the hype and really find a way to link Parker's life and music! As you might guess from the title, the book spends a lot of time looking at Bird's early years in Kansas City – and draws a great portrait of that vivid environment in the years between the wars, which is almost as enthralling as the information on Parker himself. Crouch writes with a great sense of story, as well – and he holds us rapt throughout, going way past any of the over-told tales from later years. 365 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. ✨✧ Xavier CugatBread, Love, & Cha Cha Cha/Cugat Cavalcade ... CD
Columbia/Collectables, 1957/1958. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Two of Cugie's more popular albums – and a record that has him re-recording older hits for the hi-fi generation. There's not that much hi and fi on the CD, as the groove's pretty much in the older Latin style – but the newer recordings were done in a stereo setting, which makes for a bit better sound than some of the originals. Titles include "Tico Tico", "Frenesi", "Suavecito", "Penthouse Mambo", "Nmi Musica Es Para Ti", "La Paloma", "Jalousie", "Dengoza", "Guitara Romana", "Miami Beach Rhumba", "Brazil", "Besame Mucho", and "Orchids In The Moonlight".
